There’s a scientific journal called “Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List”.
In 2005, computer scientists David Mazières and Eddie Kohler created this highly profane ten-page paper as a joke, to send in replying to unwanted conference invitations. It literally just contains that seven-word phrase over and over, along with a nice flow chart and scatter-plot graph.
An Australian computer scientist named Peter Vamplew sent it to the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology in response to spam from the journal. Apparently, he thought the editors might simply open and read it.
Instead, they automatically accepted the paper — with an anonymous reviewer rating it as “excellent” — and requested a fee of $150. While this incident is pretty hilarious, it’s a sign of a bigger problem in science publishing. This journal is one of many online-only, for-profit operations that take advantage of inexperienced researchers under pressure to publish their work in any outlet that seems superficially legitimate.

it's a shame that we don't really get to see stan showing off his knowledge/experience with handling the town's anomalies (despite his attempts to ignore/avoid them as much as possible)

Time travel fail in which Stan goes back to not break Ford's project, but gets bored waiting for the science fair and decides he might as well give the footbot another try.
He's no McGucket but he knows enough technical mumbo jumbo to make it move at least. If it goes well maybe they let him graduate high school this time around!
Enter the West Coast Tech judges
Genius kid doing genius kid things?
BORING
Worst student the school has ever seen building a fully functional talking robot? The stereotypical dumb boxer kid always overshadowed by his nerdy brother being a secret neglected undiscovered genius?
THEY CAN SELL THIS! THEIR PR DEPARTMENT WILL LOVE THIS! A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY!
Before Stan has time to process anything he’s already being shipped off California with a full scholarship to be West Coast Tech's new poster child.
Filbrick: I don’t care how you convinced them you’re worth anything. Don’t fuck this up and earn us millions or you’re not welcome in this house anymore!
Ford is convinced Stan cheated his way into West Coast Tech so they won't get seperated. Ford doesn’t apply to West Coast Tech out of spite. And he's definitely not believing Stan's ridiculous time travel explanation for a second.
Ford becomes obsessed with proving that Stan’s a fraud instead.
At least they’re still talking. Even if talking means listening to Ford finding flaws in the newest paper Stan was forced to write.
Poor Stan just wants to go home to Gravity Falls and reopen the Mystery Shack

Seriously excellent and even uplifting talk by Ed Yong. HIGHLY worth your time!
Yong is a Pulitzer-winning science journalist who's written (among other great things) some of the best, well-informed and empathetic coverage of COVID and Long COVID since 2020.
—
I can't highlight any one part; the whole thing is great. But one thought I had was that he shares this important anger that's often present in empathetic, deeply caring people — Terry Pratchett comes to mind, for example. Sagan, Miyazaki and others, in other ways. It's an anger that's difficult to carry and should not be romanticized. But I feel grateful to people like this, who are able to funnel into work that helps others and enriches all of our lives.

Why look at dead animals? Just to be edgy?
There are many reasons to find, photograph, and study animal carcasses. One of them is for conservation, to help live animals.
The reason I love dead animals is because I love live animals! But the dead ones are much easier to catch, and they’re not bothered by it.
What are some other things you’ve learned from carcasses you’ve found?
Check out the @migrationinitiative and the @thewyldlifefund for more on reducing animals getting caught on fences!

To whom it may concern,
Just a suggestion, or gentle recommendation, but if you're writing code for a scientific study of any kind, maybe consider, possibly, limiting the number of swear words in said code because now many journals now require you to have your code publicly available in order to publish and if that's the case, then you'll have to spend many hours editing out all the swear words you put into your code or risk getting rejected by the journal that you already payed way too much money to in order to submit your paper.
Sincerely,
The scientist currently cursing her past code-writing self.

sry but i'm thinking hard about phd candidate AU solas who lives in a shitty little apartment above a bar on his stipend and studies oneirology and keeps to himself most of the time. and like, it's obvious that he's smart and he knows what he's talking about but he's also a little weird and has wild ideas and talks about dream science constantly. he's high strung, too, but some nights his friends can cajole him down to the bar on the weekends and get him to smoke out with them, and when he's a little tipsy he gets really fired up about corporate science and how it kills people and stagnates progress in the name of power and money and greed. and it's strange, they think, that he knows so much about how these very secretive companies work, but it's kind of fun to see him so riled over something he believes in. and sometimes- only sometimes, when he thinks no one's around- they see him making out with one of the TAs from another program, but she makes him happy and loosens him up, so they don't tease him about it. too much.
