X/Formerly known as twitter user states: Hi. It's day 42, and as a Palestinian and a journalist and a woman and a Muslim let me take this opportunity to remind you: Gaza is not your poverty porn. My extended family and my people are not a charity case. My roots and my culture are not tragic or unfortunate /1 I see the US and Canadian mainstream media have woken up to Gaza coverage but from a humanitarian perspective alone. Palestinians are being portrayed as dirt poor and unsanitary and so very desperate -thus leading this part of the world to see them -at best -as mere unlucky souls. 2/ And it's become normalized here to see these unlucky souls as sacrificial lambs in pursuit of some idealized greater good. Usually an illusion, and through a Western lens. 3/ Palestinians are threatened, harassed, detained, tortured, maimed, and killed by the Israeli occupation. This has been the case for decades while most of you looked away. You don't get to look back in now just to run a sad story that makes you feel good about yourself. 4/4

As press organizations continue to raise concerns about Israel’s deliberate targeting of journalists, the Biden administration has made over one hundred military sales to Israel since Oct. 7.

• Journalist Mohamad Salama killed by Israeli strike in Deir el-Balah; 133 journalists killed in Gaza since Oct 7
🇦🇺 Australian lawyers refer Australian PM to ICC for “accessory to genocide in Gaza”, citing the halt of UNRWA funds, military aid to Israel & deploying Australian troops

🇺🇳 UNRWA accuses Israel of detaining & torturing its staff to extract false confessions on ties to Hamas. The unpublished UNRWA report details multiple incidents of abuse incl. torture, sexual abuse & deprivation of basic needs
🇺🇸 Washington Post: US quietly approved 100+ foreign military sales to Israel since Oct 7, disclosed in a classified congress briefing. The sales bypassed public scrutiny as their value didn’t meet the threshold requiring congressional notification, yet in total they amount to a “massive transfer of firepower”
• 20 Palestinians killed by starvation from malnutrition & dehydration, while Israel continues to block aid + attacking aid seekers, injuring 8 in Gaza City
🇨🇦 Canada was meant to announce its reinstatement of funding to UNRWA on March 6, but last minute decided to cancel the press conference. Leaving this decision unconfirmed. Canada was originally planned to announce they would resume UNRWA funding with a scheduled payment of $25m for April. Canada was one of the first countries that followed the US in halting funding due to the unsupported allegations made by Israel in January.
March 7
🚨 SOUTH AFRICA URGENT ICJ REQUEST
South Africa has once again requested the ICJ for additional emergency measures against Israel, urging the Court “to do what is within its power to save Palestinians in Gaza from genocidal starvation.” Its previous request was denied by the Court.
This was prompted by the harrowing deterioration in Gaza since the original measures in January. Using powerful language, South Africa highlights to the Court that “Palestinian children are starving to death as a direct result of the deliberate acts and omissions of Israel.”
Underscoring that Israel is “massacring desperate, starving Palestinians seeking to obtain food for their slowly dying children,” referencing the ‘flour massacre’ that killed 118 Palestinians and injured 760.
South Africa concluded by saying it “fears this Application may be the last opportunity that this Court shall have to save the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

This has faced global condemnation incl. from close allies like the US & Germany + many Arab countries
• 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza suffer from dehydration, malnutrition & lack of healthcare; 5,000 women give birth every month in Gaza in extremely unsafe & unhealthy conditions

Israel has detained 80 Palestinian journalists since it launched its brutal war on Palestine’s Gaza last October 7, a local nongovernmental organisation reported on June 2.
Forty-nine journalists, including four women reporters, remain in Israeli custody, the Palestinian Prisoner Society said in a statement.
“The occupation authorities escalate [their] policy of arresting journalists, alongside threats, physical assaults, and ongoing legal proceedings,” it added.
The NGO warned that the detained journalists “are subjected to retaliatory and punitive measures, including torture, humiliation, starvation, and systematic medical negligence."
It urged all international human rights institutions “to fulfil their responsibilities regarding the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against prisoners and detainees."
According to Palestinian figures, at least 148 journalists and media professionals have been killed by Israeli army fire in the past eight months, with Israeli forces injuring hundreds more, targeting their families, and destroying their homes, offices and media headquarters.

Al Jazeera journalist freed after 12-hour arrest by Israeli forces in Gaza
Media watchdogs decry Ismail al-Ghoul’s arrest from al-Shifa Hospital, where thousands of civilians are trapped.
Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul has been released after being arrested for 12 hours and severely beaten by Israeli forces in Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital. Al-Ghoul was there early on Monday with his crew and other reporters to cover the Israeli army’s fourth raid into the hospital, where thousands of civilians are trapped, including medical staff, patients and displaced families. Witnesses said the Al Jazeera reporter was dragged away by Israeli forces, who also destroyed the broadcasting vehicles of news crews at the medical facility. He has since been freed after 12 hours in Israeli custody. Al-Ghoul told Al Jazeera after his release that Israeli forces destroyed media equipment and arrested journalists gathered in a room used by media teams. He said the journalists were stripped of their clothes and forced to lie on their stomachs as they were blindfolded and their hands tied. Israeli soldiers would open fire to scare them if there was any movement, al-Ghoul said. He added that he had heard that some of his colleagues were also released, but he did not have enough information about their whereabouts. Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip, has served as a base for journalists to report on Israel’s more than five-month war on the Palestinian enclave. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Rafah, said al-Ghoul was “tortured, beaten and detained by the Israeli military along with his crew member on the ground”. Mahmoud, quoting witnesses, said many Palestinians were beaten and verbally abused, some blindfolded and their hands tied behind their backs. They were then put inside an Israeli military truck and taken to an unknown location, he said. Gaza’s Ministry of Health said Israeli forces launched missiles and opened fire on one of the hospital’s buildings, killing and injuring Palestinians, and a section of the hospital’s courtyard was bulldozed. According to Mahmoud, Israeli forces had also arrested more than 80 other Palestinians, including “women medical staff and [other] journalists”. “The Israeli army made a list of allegations that they are looking for wanted people inside the complex but so far haven’t provided any substantial evidence … to justify what is happening inside al-Shifa,” Mahmoud said.

Common Dreams
April 5, 2024
"The Biden administration's ongoing support for Israel's genocidal policies implicates it directly in the relentless targeting and massacring of journalists in Gaza, including hundreds of our colleagues and their families."
Palestinian journalists this week issued an appeal to their U.S. counterparts urging them to boycott the April 27 White House Correspondents' Association dinner over the Biden administration's complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza.
"In the past six months alone, the Israeli military has executed over 125 Palestinian journalists in Gaza—10% of Gaza's community of journalists," notes the appeal, which is being organized with the help of Adalah Justice Project and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights. "The year 2023 marked the bloodiest year for journalists worldwide in over a decade, with over 75% of killed journalists targeted by Israel’s attacks on Gaza."
"As Palestinian journalists, we urgently appeal to you, our colleagues globally, with a demand for immediate and unwavering action against the Biden administration's ongoing complicity in the systematic slaughter and persecution of journalists in Gaza," the authors wrote.
"We bear the enormous burden of exposing the realities of Israel's genocidal campaign to the world while living through it in real-time. Israel has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians as we watch on," the journalists said. The death toll in Gaza now exceeds 33,000—mostly women and children—with at least 75,550 other Palestinians wounded since October 7.
Tumblr media
The appeal continues:
In Gaza, journalism is synonymous with putting our lives on the line as Israel methodically targets us in its desperate bid to silence our voices and obscure the grim reality of its genocidal actions and its project of ethnic cleansing in Palestine. For Palestinian journalists in Gaza, the blue press vest does not offer us protection, but rather functions as a red target. The Biden administration's ongoing support for Israel's genocidal policies implicates it directly in the relentless targeting and massacring of journalists in Gaza, including hundreds of our colleagues and their families.
"Western media has played an integral role in manufacturing consent for Israel's ongoing violence against the Palestinian people, while obfuscating U.S. complicity," the journalists continued. "Over the past six months, the mainstream press has become the mouthpiece of the homicidal Israeli regime, promoting dehumanizing anti-Palestinian propaganda and platforming genocide apologists and perpetrators, while simultaneously ignoring, downplaying, and underreporting Israel's war crimes against Palestinians."
Tumblr media
"The White House Correspondents' dinner is an embodiment of media manipulation, trading journalistic ethics for access," the appeal argues. "For journalists to fraternize at an event with President [Joe] Biden and Vice President [Kamala] Harris would be to normalize, sanitize, and whitewash the administration's role in genocide."
"As journalists reporting from the belly of the beast, you have a unique responsibility to speak truth to power and uphold journalistic integrity," the Palestinians implored U.S. journalists. "It is unacceptable to stay silent out of fear or professional concern while journalists in Gaza continue to be detained, tortured, and killed for doing our jobs."
The appeal's authors noted that American media professionals have demanded justice for journalists like Palestinian American Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh—who numerous probes found was intentionally killed by Israeli forces in 2022—and Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi Washington Post columnist gruesomely murdered in 2018 by Saudi Arabian operatives in Turkey.
"It is past time journalists take action for journalists in Gaza," the Palestinians asserted. "We call on all journalists of conscience to stand with us and uplift our call to boycott the White House Correspondents' dinner."

You know what? I don't condemn Hamas actually
If I lived in Gaza, I wouldn't vote for them for the same reasons I'm not voting for any traditionalists, but seeing as:
there don’t actually seem to have been any gratuitous ISIS-style atrocities such as rapes, indiscriminate massacres or beheadings, rather, ISRAELI GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRABLY BOMBED THEIR OWN PEOPLE with ppl admitting this in mainstream Israeli Newspapers. Israeli Newspapers! Not Hamas, not Al-Jhazeera.
they're not even that extreme in their present form compared to the 80s, & made repeated peace offers (Cooome on. I doubt we'd be seeing so many women Doctors, Poets and Journalists in Gaza if they were like ISIS or even the Taliban.)
that they made sure elderly hostages had their meds (its better to be a hamas hostage than an USA citizen, apparently....)
that there was a concrete military aim (release of unlawfully detained Palestinian Prisoners)
and that Israel has a track record of shooting at or locking up/torturing peaceful protesters even if they're children
I just learned Palestinians are HALF the population. Half the Population can't vote?! And when they got to have their own elections, Israel put Gaza on lockdown cause they didn't like the results.
I am confident calling the attack a legitimate armed resistance operation.
Human rights orgs gave been complaining for YEARS about those prisoners. There have been reports of beatings, rapes, torture, mentally ill teens thrown in solitary… but no one suceeded at getting them free. I wonder if some if the Hamas fighters wanted to save imprisoned family members.
I'm struck by the part of the article where one of the escaped hostages mentions a militant (whom she describes as being at most 20) being star struck with her fruit bowl and sheepishly asking if he could eat a banana. It had probably been a while since he saw one. I wonder what became of him.
Those who made peaceful resistance impossible make violent uprising INEVITABLE.
This is not even about morality, it's cause & effect. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks, or if they "should". You brutalize people, some fraction will always fight back. It's a fact.
EDIT: That said, to be clear: Collective punishment would still be wrong even if they were, in fact, the worst of barbarians. We don't kill all North Koreans for the actions of Kim. We don't pile up the corpses of Russian children because of Putin. They didn't leave German civilians without food or water because of Hitler.

Can you explain why Hamas is bad?
Easy, they
are a designated terrorist organization in multiple countries
use photographs from tragedies in other countries to demonize Israel and the Israeli people
wish for the extermination of the Jewish people
have begun using the hashtag #hitlerwasright in earnest, praising Hitler, and using nazi symbols
reportedly restrict speech and press in Gaza and detain and torture those they accuse of dissent
attack journalists who criticize their actions
instigated the current conflict
have kidnapped, held hostage, and killed Israeli citizens, some of them teens
are willing to kill their own citizens in order to meet their own ends including but not limited to utilizing suicide bombers and positioning their bases in civilian buildings knowing that they will be targeted through air strikes and do so in order to make martyrs of the people who live in or around those buildings to further demonize the Jewish people and Israel
strive to create an Islamic state with sharia law
have stated they will compromise under absolutely no circumstances and are dedicated to violent means in order to “obliterate” Israel
use foreign “charities” as a cover in order to raise money for their cause or funnel money into their cause (see: International Relief Fund for the Afflicted and Needy, the Holy Land Foundation, and the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund)
are previously affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood
Also have ties to ISIS and allegedly have received weapons from North Korea.

Israeli "Soldiers" RAPE, TORTURE and KILL Palestinian Hostages
Tumblr media
New incidents of abuse suffered by Gaza detainees at the hands of Israeli forces have come to light following a news conference held on Monday by the Commission of Detainees Affairs, a Palestinian prisoner's organisation.
Speakers at the press conference in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, provided updates on the conditions faced by Palestinians taken from Gaza and held in Israeli custody.
Khaled Mhajne, the commission’s lawyer, reported on his conversation with Mohammed Arab, Al Araby TV’s Gaza correspondent, who was detained by Israeli forces during their raid on Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital on 18 March.
“Mohammed Arab, the journalist with Al Araby TV, informed me of cases of rape of inmates as well as torture in front of everyone,” Mhajne said.
Mhajne spoke to Arab in Israel’s Ofer prison in the West Bank, where he was recently transferred along with some prisoners from the notorious Sde Teiman detention centre in Israel's Negev desert.
“Mohammed also spoke of cases of abuse, where detainees were tied up to walls, with dogs released to attack them,” Mhajne said. Detainees were also beaten with clubs for “hours on end” and “beaten with pistols into their butts”.
In an interview with Al Araby TV following the press conference, Mhajne recounted a case Arab informed him of involving a 27-year-old detainee who was raped, forced to sleep on his stomach, attacked by police dogs “and then raped with a fire extinguisher and had the tube inserted into his butt”.
The extinguisher was then activated to release its contents into the man’s body, Mhajne said. Mhajne stated that it was impossible to know how many Palestinians from Gaza had died in detention, as Israel is concealing this information.
The conditions described by Mhajne have echoed the testimonies of several Palestinian prisoners interviewed by Middle East Eye. Mohammed Arab shares a room with over 20 other Palestinians in Ofer prison, where they are forced to remain tied up even when sleeping, eating or using the bathroom.

Prisoners held by Israel are going through ‘tragic conditions’: al-Shifa Hospital director
youtube
The Israeli military has released a group of Palestinians from prison. They're having medical checks at Al-Aqsa and Nasser Hospitals. Among those released is the director of al-Shifa Hospital, Muhammad Abu Salmiya. He was detained in November, while taking part in a United Nations mission to evacuate patients, from the medical complex. Abu Salamiya says Israeli forces detained him on no legal grounds. Following his release from Israeli detention, the director of al-Shifa Hospital, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, has confirmed that Palestinian prisoners are going through “tragic conditions” due to the lack of food, drink and torture. He said hundreds of medical personnel have been detained by Israeli forces, and that a number of Palestinian detainees were killed while tortured. He stressed that Palestinians in Gaza would rebuild the Strip, including his hospital. Palestinian sources confirmed that Abu Salmiya was subjected to brutal torture during his detention in Israeli-run prisons. Mansour Shouman, a Palestinian journalist and humanitarian who witnessed Israel’s war in Rafah and Khan Younis, has told Al Jazeera that “there are thousands more like Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya who had been detained by Israel in the wrongful way over the past few months”.
