"It may surprise you that the use of the term bisexual to refer to human sexuality is almost as old as the term heterosexual. In his book The Invention of Homosexuality, gay history pioneer and activist Jonathan Ned Katz argues that 'the idea of heterosexuality is a modern invention, dating to the late nineteenth century'. THe first recorded use of the term was in an anymous pamphlet in 1869, of which it was later established that Karl-Maria Kertbeny was the author. Kertbeny . . . wrote extensively about his view that sodomy laws violated human rights, and that such consensual acts in private should not be subject to criminal law. While writing, Kertbeny, who was probably gay himself, found the need to label and define the sexual norm so that he could explain how same-sex desires and sexual behaviors contrasted with it. This is why he came up with the terms 'heterosexual' and 'homosexual'. This means that a gay rights activist coined the word heterosexual as a by-product of creating the word homosexual.
. . .Not long after this, bi, or two, started to be used to refer to people who had both homosexual and heterosexual desires. A way that bisexual researchers often talk about this is that the bi in bisexual means two, but the two are not men and women, they are same and other."
-Bi: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality by Julia Shaw

ada, ensnare any of your beloved mutuals into your current WIP or even a posted fic? what is happening to them ;)
First, Lola you should know I adore this question and I spent more time mulling over this than I probably should have.
Alright how about a little bit of both.
I'm grabbing anyone who wants to come and we're diving into a day full of mid-afternoon karaoke, meals at Katz's Deli, Julie and Julia inspired cooking classes with Linda Cohen and combing through an unending collection of books at Strand's Book Store a la 29 Going on 30.
Actually @strandnreyes and @heartstringsduet you both have to come along, we're finally getting you that Strand Book Store merchandise ‼️
As for my WIPs, anyone who is ready to deal with the harsh summer of the Old West is more than welcome to come along and just gaze upon sexy men being sexy cowboys.
I'm also going to find a way to convince them to make Uber for wagons. I hate capitalism, but I love a good goof.

hello i have a genuine curious question!! ik you talk a lot about the gender binary & i wonder what are your thoughts on butler if you've ever read her? on another subject i'm also curious what your fav text might be if you're willing to share xx
hello! u have clocked me i do in fact love 2 talk abt gender etc so! happy 2 answer <3
i have read butler, though not extensively--i first read performative acts and gender constitution while i was an undergrad and that's really the only work of butler's that i would consider myself familiar with, though i've also read some different excerpts from gender trouble and bodies that matter in other college courses.
generally speaking, based on what i have read of butler's work, i'd say i consider myself a fan <3 butler's theory of gender performativity has been so influential and definitely altered my own way of thinking about gender. unfortunately i think butler's idea that gender is performatively constituted oftentimes gets misinterpreted/simplified down into gender = performance both by people who are trying to agree and by people who are trying to disagree which. is a little funny but also a little frustrating
as far as a favorite text!! i don't think i can choose just one lol. i've read a lot of texts about gender that have said a lot of different things and challenged me 2 think in a lot of different ways, all of which i've liked for different reasons. i will say that probably the three most influential texts i encountered in my time as an undergrad in terms of how they like...sparked a personal shift in my own worldview or thinking were probably:
butler's performative acts and gender constitution
lee edelman's no future: queer theory and the death drive (specifically ch 1, 'the future is kid stuff') (also here's a post where i talk thru my edelman crash course if u want the sparknotes lol)
andrea long chu's on liking women
however there are many more texts that i would recommend!! here's a post where i talk about a bunch, but i will quickly list some more recs:
the invention of heterosexuality, by jonathan ned katz
whipping girl, by julia serano
this bridge called my back, ed. by cherrie moraga + gloria anzaldua
sister outsider, by audre lorde
women, race & class, by angela y. davis
a cyborg manifesto, by donna j. haraway
females, by andrea long chu

Was sagst du?“
Alternatives Coffee-Shop-AU: Falke will Glühwein. Julia will einen Kaffee. Tine hilft bei einem Glühweinstand aus. Und hat keinen Kaffee.
🚪Türchen 14: Hand in Hand von @except4bunnies
„Möchtest du meinen Pinguin haben?“
Julia Grosz, Tine Geissler und ein typisches Hamburger Winterdate.
🚪Türchen 15: The Soundtrack Of Our Lives von @except4bunnies
„Moin, Verkehrskontrolle.
„Hab mir was eingefangen.“
„Hört sich nach Männergrippe an. Viel Lärm um nichts.“
Thorsten Falke ist krank. Also wirklich. Schade nur, dass ihm das keiner glaubt.
🚪Türchen 21: Last Christmas von @dragodina
Weihnachtsfeier bei den Hamburger Polizeidienststellen.
Es liegt etwas in der Luft.
Wenn da nicht Erinnerungen wären.
An letztes Weihnachten.
Und eins, das viele Jahre zurückliegt.
🚪Türchen 22: Irgendwas bleibt von @caromitpunkt
Tine und Julia verbringen ihren ersten Heiligabend zusammen.
🚪Türchen 23: Another Year Has Gone By von @dragodina
"Hallo? “Du hast mich halt vom ersten Augenblick an fasziniert. Also so richtig. So majestätisch, so edel, so anmutig.
🚪Türchen 24: If you wanna be my lover von @except4bunnies

what are your tony predictions??
Love this question! I’m not gonna give ALL my predictions just because there are so many categories, but here are some of my 2023 Tony Awards predictions/who I personally want to win:
Best Musical:
Who I want: Kimberly Akimbo
My prediction: Kimberly Akimbo
It’s amazing and tbh I feel like just about everyone who’s seen it absolutely loves it. Talented cast, funny and touching story, catchy songs. That show has it all.
Best Play:
Who I want: Leopoldstadt
My prediction: Ain’t No Mo’
Both plays are super important and super dark. But Ain’t No Mo’ also has the comedic element that’s more pleasing to audiences at the end of the day.
Best Musical Revival:
Who I want: Parade
My prediction: Into The Woods
I love both of these musicals so much. I’m a huge Sondheim fan too. As fantastic as Parade is, I just can’t see Into The Woods losing after all the hype.
Leading Actress in a Musical:
Who I want: Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo) or Lorna Courtney (&Juliet)
My prediction: Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo) or Micaela Diamond (Parade)
This category is stacked. I honestly don’t care who wins. They all deserve it.
Leading Actor in a Musical:
Who I want: Colton Ryan (New York, New York)
My prediction: Ben Platt (Parade)
Ben Platt will definitely win. I’m 98% sure.
Featured Actor in a Musical:
Who I want: Justin Cooley (Kimberly Akimbo)
My prediction: Kevin Cahoon (Shucked)
Justin is only like 19 or 20 years old so I think him winning a Tony would be awesome.
Featured Actress in a Musical:
Who I want: Bonnie Milligan (Kimberly Akimbo) or NaTasha Yvette Williams (Some Like It Hot)
My prediction: Julia Lester (Into The Woods)
I love Bonnie, and NaTasha is a legend. I just feel like Julia’s gonna get it.
Here are my other predictions without my opinion:
Best Revival of a Play: A Doll’s House Best Direction (Play): Jaime Lloyd (A Doll’s House) Best Direction (Musical): Michael Arden (Parade) Best Choreography: Susan Stroman (New York, New York) Best Book: Kimberly Akimbo Best Score: Kimberly Akimbo or Shucked
Honorable mentions: I will forever be rooting for Michael Arden to win Best Direction. He was robbed in 2016. I hope Natasha Katz (Some Like It Hot, Sweeney Todd) wins best Lighting Design because she did the Lighting Design for Sing Street and it was outstanding!!
Overall I don’t really think Kimberly Akimbo will sweep (as much as I love that musical lol) I don’t think any show will sweep this year. I have a feeling it’s gonna be evenly dispersed. Thanks for the ask!
