#July Drabble Challenge

“Robin stooped down and began to plant more seeds. She still longed desperately for a tall glass of cold water, but something inside of her had been quenched and comforted all the same.”

This is an assortment of ficlets inspired by some of the July Drabble prompts – posted with apologies that it’s now August, that these aren’t drabbles and that I’m going for four chapters with five ficlets each (i.e. only twenty prompts out of the thirty-one). Some of these are set at Chapman Farm and feature supporting characters from ‘The Running Grave,’ whilst others are set at various points in the lives of Strike and Robin.

Chapter One prompts: Thirsty, Moving, Mothers, Pottery, Sweater. Chapter Two prompts: Son, Girls’ Night, Eight, Doctor’s Orders, Competitive. Chapter Three prompts: Respite, Mint, Hermit, Old Fashioned, Saxophone. Chapter Four prompts: Thirteen, Magazine, Hair Cutting, Flustered, Losing a Bet.

A number of the ficlets in Chapters Two, Three and Four are specifically inspired by/ indebted to conversations between Pools, Lindsay and Kenz on the always-glorious podcast @thesefilespod which is why I’ve gifted this to @pools-of-venetianblue. Don’t Like the Cold

A/N: Very, very novice writer. Figured I’d use the @the-slumberparty​ as an excuse to get myself some practice. Using the trope of “Caught in a Storm” with allusions to “Power’s Out” and “Cuddling for Warmth”. Reader has no physical descriptors. 549 words.

“Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer a week in Jamaica? Hell, I’d even settle for Kentucky, just...Anywhere south of here for Christmas.”

Your boyfriend, Curtis, hasn’t stopped complaining about your choice of holiday plans. You shouldn’t be all that surprised, he has told you many, many times about how much he hates the cold. It was something you tried to understand but kept falling short on. You had asked him to try one Christmas in Michigan with you and, if he still didn’t see the appeal, you’d let him pick the next three vacations.

“A deal is a deal, Honey,” you replied. “Just like when I promised to go with you to Baton Rouge in the middle of August to try to “enjoy” heat and humidity.”

“You did have fun, though,” he smiled. “Just had to buy a lot more deodorant than you’d planned.”

“And now you’re stuck with me in the Upper Peninsula because, dammit, it’s beautiful, secluded, and we can just be together.”

“Yeah, because we’re frozen to each other!”

You scoff at his whining but give him a big hug, “we can always keep each other warm.”

“Curtis, please calm down. It’s just a snowstorm that’ll die down tomorrow.”

“And if the power goes out in the meantime?”

“One, that’s what we have the generator for. Two, we have enough food for three or more days that doesn’t require power to cook. Three, we have a fireplace already lit with enough wood that we don’t have to go out for more for at least a day.”

Curtis kept up his pacing, occasionally looking outside at the nearly solid wall of white. You’d never seen him like this before. “Curtis, seriously, what’s wrong?”

He stops, looks at you and says, “when I was younger, Dad would throw us outside to the elements to teach us to be “tough” or “self reliant” or whatever other bullshit he could think of. Day, night, summer, winter, didn’t matter. We were thrown outside without any kind of resources for at least a full day.”

“Summer time wasn’t so bad. No shoes, no jacket, no problem. Could always find some form of food and water to tide you over. Could cool down in the creek if need be. But winter was brutal. Had to learn how to start a fire with sticks and nearly frozen hands. We had no way of knowing if or when he’d...” He shakes his head.

“Oh, Honey” you exclaim as you hug him close. “Why didn’t you ever tell me this? I’d have happily changed our plans!”

“You just love the winter snows so much,” he whispered as he hugged you back. “I wanted to at least try. For you.”

“Curtis, Honey, I don’t know what to say.” You start to pull away from him but he traps you in his arms. Then an idea comes to you.

“How about we make up some hot cocoa then cuddle up under all of the blankets?”

Curtis smiles fondly as he looks into your eyes. “That sounds like a plan.”

Hi @maesonc-artistic-adventures! Your artwork is so beautifully textured and adorable and has inspired me to continue creating for this fandom. I admire you a lot, so I wrote this short piece for you as part of the Fan Joy July challenge based on your artwork. I hope that’s okay!

“It’s definitely north,” said Wind. Warriors loomed over his shoulder and he snatched the map out of sight, scowling. Rain was drumming against the shield Warriors held over their heads, pt-pt-pt-pt-pt off the grooved metal and all around them in thick droplets. Not that it was doing them much good. A stiff breeze was flinging the water under their makeshift shelter and into their faces. The back of Wind’s tunic was all damp. “Hey! Pirate eyes only.” “What, you’re worried I’m going to see the X where you buried all your treasure?” Warriors laughed. “You didn’t even make this map. And anyway, you’re holding it upside down.” “No, I’m not.” “Yes, you are.” Warriors tugged it out of the kid’s hands and rotated it, then handed it back. Wind’s eyes went round. He squinted through the rain. “Oh,” he said. The shield thrummed. Pt-pt-pt-pt-pt. Warriors laughed at him. Wind elbowed him in the ribs as hard as he could manage.  “Well, how was I supposed to know that?” he demanded. “In my era we draw our compasses in this corner, not that one.” He shoved the map under the captain’s nose, pointing. Warriors shook his head.  “It’s labelled?”  “Well, I don’t read this hylian, do I?” Wind said incredulously. “I can’t deal with you imbeciles.” “Ah, come on now,” Warriors said. “Don’t start quoting the old man at me, that’s not fair.” He blinked rain out of his eyelashes, blond hair soaked flat against his forehead, and grinned winningly until Wind elbowed him again. “We need to go east,” the kid decided, holding the map out. An icy wave of rain came upon them from behind. A furious shiver wracked him. “Nah,” Warriors admitted. “It’s north. You were holding it the right way before.” Wind whipped his head around and glared. “You rat bastard.” Warriors grinned. “Just a bit of fun. C’mon, squirt. Lead the way.” “See if I ever let you give me map advice ever again,” Wind said with his nose in the air. He gestured in the right direction. Warriors set off, brisk pace slightly more sluggish than usual, matching Wind’s walking speed. If the sailor had asked, he would’ve cited the weather—but he kept his shield level above Wind’s head the entire journey, as they both stumbled on down the road to Kakariko through the cold grey rain.

Fluffcember in July 2025

Alright, the poll was faily clear: A lot of people want to do a summer Fluffcember. Which obviously is also fun! Remember, this idea came about due to people from the Southern Hemisphere noting, that all "december" challenges tend to focus on winter-related topics, while in the Southern Hemisphere it was summer.

So, to be fair, now another somewhat wintery challenge in July, when the Southern Hemisphere people have their own winter.

From December onwards, I will make sure the challenges will be two-sided. Summer-side and Winter-side!

Bonus challenge: Put your characters in the Southern Hemisphere for once. (Okay, this one is probably easier for the Dragon Age fandom xD)

Rules and Lists are underneath the cut!

Rules:

You can participate with fanfics, original writing, poetry, graphics, or art of any sort.

You do not need to write/create for every day. If you do only want to do every second day that is fine.

Please post your entries on the days or later though - not before.

If you participate with fics: please note that this account will only repost stuff that is written out. No "this is an idea of a fic one could write to this prompt". For prose writing the min length is 100 words (so the lenght of a drabble).

Please make sure your post also note the fandom that your entry is for!

The fic should be somewhat soft or fluffy. It can however absolutely be fluff in a NSFW way. There is no issue with that.

The one thing I cannot allow because it is a bit iffy in regards to my homecountry's laws: RPS. Anything with real people who were alive in the last 100 years I cannot admit. If they are dead for longe than that it is fine.

This is a fanworks challenge/event that is all about Corroded Coffin. It will take place from July 1st thru July 31st.

Thanks so much for showing interest in this event during this post! If you have friends that you think would like to participate, please considering reblogging this announcement!

Since there are so many events going on (and we love to see it!) we've decided to set a word count range for this event, so the love can be spread around to more events.

GUIDELINES:

Ideas for works include: fic, art, gifsets, fanvids, moodboards, edits, playlists, or anything else you can think of to celebrate Corroded Coffin!

For fics, there is a word count minimum/maximum of between 300-1000 words per drabble. We'll use wordcounter.net to check the word counts before reblogging, so make sure you stick to that range!

Do one prompt, do them all. Hell, do them all twice! It's totally up to you. You can pick and choose what you're interested in. And we're not going to police how you interpret the prompt. Just use them as a jumping off point to be inspired by the boys of Corroded Coffin, and then share that inspiration with us! (Not everything has to be band related, we encourage you to explore other parts of their lives, too!)

Submissions can absolutely be connected to other prompts from the event, or even past works, but should still be able to stand alone each day.

Every morning a new prompt card will go up, reminding everyone of what that day's prompt will be.

Death bargains, daemati communication, co-dependency, jealousy, possession...Feyre and Rhys have torn down any boundaries between them in service of their love, no matter how dangerous. Finally, quick update on the GatheringFiKi Community (I asked about it last year): I have tried to create such a community twice so far. Each time I'm getting 'awaiting approval' stage and then it gets no further. If I do manage to create it at some point, you can all expect invites into the Community and you're more than welcome to request one too. No idea how we'd use it yet.

Why just two weeks? I understand not everyone has the time/stamina to do a huge challenge, so I thought two weeks was a good compromise!

Miss a day? Don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world, you can always catch up in future. This challenge is not limited to these two weeks, if you’re finding this two months after its over, then you’re more than welcome to take part!

How much do you need to write/do for each day? As much or as little as you’d like. If a drabble turns into a full fic, brilliant! If you only have the time for a sketch that's fine too!
