I learned something new today about Search Enging Optomisation (SEO)
Today someone introduced me to the ultra-long-tail keyword and I could not understand or picture what it was about. It shows that verbal communication and teaching is accepted, whereas it is quite a struggle to convey that these types of phrases don’t compute for someone who processes visually. No amount of explanation will beat either giving me an example to recognise or an infographic. A long…

I saw something about generative AI on JSTOR. Can you confirm whether you really are implementing it and explain why? I’m pretty sure most of your userbase hates AI.
A generative AI/machine learning research tool on JSTOR is currently in beta, meaning that it's not fully integrated into the platform. This is an opportunity to determine how this technology may be helpful in parsing through dense academic texts to make them more accessible and gauge their relevancy.
To JSTOR, this is primarily a learning experience. We're looking at how beta users are engaging with the tool and the results that the tool is producing to get a sense of its place in academia.
In order to understand what we're doing a bit more, it may help to take a look at what the tool actually does. From a recent blog post:
Content evaluation
Problem: Traditionally, researchers rely on metadata, abstracts, and the first few pages of an article to evaluate its relevance to their work. In humanities and social sciences scholarship, which makes up the majority of JSTOR’s content, many items lack abstracts, meaning scholars in these areas (who in turn are our core cohort of users) have one less option for efficient evaluation.
When using a traditional keyword search in a scholarly database, a query might return thousands of articles that a user needs significant time and considerable skill to wade through, simply to ascertain which might in fact be relevant to what they’re looking for, before beginning their search in earnest.
Solution: We’ve introduced two capabilities to help make evaluation more efficient, with the aim of opening the researcher’s time for deeper reading and analysis:
Summarize, which appears in the tool interface as “What is this text about,” provides users with concise descriptions of key document points. On the back-end, we’ve optimized the Large Language Model (LLM) prompt for a concise but thorough response, taking on the task of prompt engineering for the user by providing advanced direction to:
Extract the background, purpose, and motivations of the text provided.
Capture the intent of the author without drawing conclusions.
Limit the response to a short paragraph to provide the most important ideas presented in the text.
Tumblr media
Search term context is automatically generated as soon as a user opens a text from search results, and provides information on how that text relates to the search terms the user has used. Whereas the summary allows the user to quickly assess what the item is about, this feature takes evaluation to the next level by automatically telling the user how the item is related to their search query, streamlining the evaluation process.
Tumblr media
Discovering new paths for exploration
Problem: Once a researcher has discovered content of value to their work, it’s not always easy to know where to go from there. While JSTOR provides some resources, including a “Cited by” list as well as related texts and images, these pathways are limited in scope and not available for all texts. Especially for novice researchers, or those just getting started on a new project or exploring a novel area of literature, it can be needlessly difficult and frustrating to gain traction.
Solution: Two capabilities make further exploration less cumbersome, paving a smoother path for researchers to follow a line of inquiry:
Recommended topics are designed to assist users, particularly those who may be less familiar with certain concepts, by helping them identify additional search terms or refine and narrow their existing searches. This feature generates a list of up to 10 potential related search queries based on the document’s content. Researchers can simply click to run these searches.
Tumblr media
Related content empowers users in two significant ways. First, it aids in quickly assessing the relevance of the current item by presenting a list of up to 10 conceptually similar items on JSTOR. This allows users to gauge the document’s helpfulness based on its relation to other relevant content. Second, this feature provides a pathway to more content, especially materials that may not have surfaced in the initial search. By generating a list of related items, complete with metadata and direct links, users can extend their research journey, uncovering additional sources that align with their interests and questions.
Tumblr media
Supporting comprehension
Problem: You think you have found something that could be helpful for your work. It’s time to settle in and read the full document… working through the details, making sure they make sense, figuring out how they fit into your thesis, etc. This all takes time and can be tedious, especially when working through many items.
Solution: To help ensure that users find high quality items, the tool incorporates a conversational element that allows users to query specific points of interest. This functionality, reminiscent of CTRL+F but for concepts, offers a quicker alternative to reading through lengthy documents.
By asking questions that can be answered by the text, users receive responses only if the information is present. The conversational interface adds an accessibility layer as well, making the tool more user-friendly and tailored to the diverse needs of the JSTOR user community.
Credibility and source transparency
We knew that, for an AI-powered tool to truly address user problems, it would need to be held to extremely high standards of credibility and transparency. On the credibility side, JSTOR’s AI tool uses only the content of the item being viewed to generate answers to questions, effectively reducing hallucinations and misinformation.
On the transparency front, responses include inline references that highlight the specific snippet of text used, along with a link to the source page. This makes it clear to the user where the response came from (and that it is a credible source) and also helps them find the most relevant parts of the text.

Rant about generative AI in education and in general under the cut because I'm worried and frustrated and I needed to write it out in a small essay:
So, context: I am a teacher in Belgium, Flanders. I am now teaching English (as a second language), but have also taught history and Dutch (as a native language). All in secondary education, ages 12-16.
More and more I see educational experts endorse ai being used in education and of course the most used tools are the free, generative ones. Today, one of the colleagues responsible for the IT of my school went to an educational lecture where they once again vouched for the use of ai.
Now their keyword is that it should always be used in a responsible manner, but the issue is... can it be?
1. Environmentally speaking, ai has been a nightmare. Not only does it have an alarming impact on emission levels, but also on the toxic waste that's left behind. Not to mention the scarcity of GPUs caused by the surge of ai in the past few years. Even sources that would vouch for ai have raised concerns about the impact it has on our collective health. sources: here, here and here
2. Then there's the issue with what the tools are trained on and this in multiple ways:
Many of the free tools that the public uses is trained on content available across the internet. However, it is at this point common knowledge (I'd hope) that most creators of the original content (writers, artists, other creative content creators, researchers, etc.) were never asked for permission and so it has all been stolen. Many social media platforms will often allow ai training on them without explicitly telling the user-base or will push it as the default setting and make it difficult for their user-base to opt out. Deviantart, for example, lost much of its reputation when it implemented such a policy. It had to backtrack in 2022 afterwards because of the overwhelming backlash. The problem is then that since the content has been ripped from their context and no longer made by a human, many governments therefore can no longer see it as copyrighted. Which, yes, luckily also means that ai users are legally often not allowed to pass off ai as 'their own creation'. Sources: here, here
Then there's the working of generative ai in general. As said before, it simply rips words or image parts from their original, nuanced context and then mesh it together without the user being able to accurately trace back where the info is coming from. A tool like ChatGPT is not a search engine, yet many people use it that way without realising it is not the same thing at all. More on the working of generative ai in detail. Because of how it works, it means there is always a chance for things to be biased and/or inaccurate. If a tool has been trained on social media sources (which ChatGPT for example is) then its responses can easily be skewed to the demographic it's been observing. Bias is an issue is most sources when doing research, but if you have the original source you also have the context of the source. Ai makes it that the original context is no longer clear to the user and so bias can be overlooked and go unnoticed much easier. Source: here
3. Something my colleague mentioned they said in the lecture is that ai tools can be used to help the learning of the students.
Let me start off by saying that I can understand why there is an appeal to ai when you do not know much about the issues I have already mentioned. I am very aware it is probably too late to fully stop the wave of ai tools being published.
There are certain uses to types of ai that can indeed help with accessibility. Such as text-to-voice or the other way around for people with disabilities (let's hope the voice was ethically begotten).
But many of the other uses mentioned in the lecture I have concerns with. They are to do with recognising learning, studying and wellbeing patterns of students. Not only do I not think it is really possible to data-fy the complexity of each and every single student you would have as they are still actively developing as a young person, this also poses privacy risks in case the data is ever compromised. Not to mention that ai is often still faulty and, as it is not a person, will often still make mistakes when faced with how unpredictable a human brain can be. We do not all follow predictable patterns.
The lecture stated that ai tools could help with neurodivergency 'issues'. Obviously I do not speak for others and this next part is purely personal opinion, but I do think it important to nuance this: as someone with auDHD, no ai-tool has been able to help me with my executive dysfunction in the long-term. At first, there is the novelty of the app or tool and I am very motivated. They are often in the form of over-elaborate to-do lists with scheduled alarms. And then the issue arises: the ai tries to train itself on my presented routine... except I don't have one. There is no routine to train itself on, because that is my very problem I am struggling with. Very quickly it always becomes clear that the ai doesn't understand this the way a human mind would. A professionally trained in psychology/therapy human mind. And all I was ever left with was the feeling of even more frustration.
In my opinion, what would help way more than any ai tool would be the funding of mental health care and making it that going to a therapist or psychiatrist or coach is covered by health care the way I only have to pay 5 euros to my doctor while my health care provider pays the rest. (In Belgium) This would make mental health care much more accessible and would have a greater impact than faulty ai tools.
4. It was also said that ai could help students with creative assignments and preparing for spoken interactions both in their native language as well as in the learning of a new one.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Creativity in its essence is about the person creating something from their own mind and putting the effort in to translate those ideas into their medium of choice. Stick figures on lined course paper are more creative than letting a tool like Midjourney generate an image based on stolen content. How are we teaching students to be creative when we allow them to not put a thought in what they want to say and let an ai do it for them?
And since many of these tools are also faulty and biased in their content, how could they accurately replace conversations with real people? Ai cannot fully understand the complexities of language and all the nuances of the contexts around it. Body language, word choice, tone, volume, regional differences, etc.
And as a language teacher, I can truly say there is nothing more frustrating than wanting to assess the writing level of my students, giving them a writing assignment where they need to express their opinion and write it in two tiny paragraphs... and getting an ai response back. Before anyone comes to me saying that my students may simply be very good at English. Indeed, but my current students are not. They are precious, but their English skills are very flawed. It is very easy to see when they wrote it or ChatGPT. It is not only frustrating to not being able to trust part of your students' honesty and knowing they learned nothing from the assignment cause you can't give any feedback; it is almost offensive that they think I wouldn't notice it.
5. Apparently, it was mentioned in the lecture that in schools where ai is banned currently, students are fearful that their jobs would be taken away by ai and that in schools where ai was allowed that students had much more positive interactions with technology.
First off, I was not able to see the source and data that this statement was based on. However, I personally cannot shake the feeling there's a data bias in there. Of course students will feel more positively towards ai if they're not told about all the concerns around it.
Secondly, the fact that in the lecture it was (reportedly) framed that being scared your job would disappear because of ai, was untrue is... infuriating. Because it already is becoming a reality. Let's not forget what partially caused the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023. Corporations see an easy (read: cheap) way to get marketable content by using ai at the cost of the creative professionals. Unregulated ai use by businesses causing the loss of jobs for real-life humans, is very much a threat. Dismissing this is basically lying to young students.
6. My conclusion:
I am frustrated. It's clamoured that we, as teachers, should educate more about ai and it's responsible use. However, at the same time the many concerns and issues around most of the accessible ai tools are swept under the rug and not actively talked about.
I find the constant surging rise of generative ai everywhere very concerning and I can only hope that more people will start seeing it too.
Thank you for reading.

Local_Storage_Only: Objectives
{content warning: SSC-typical creepy eugenics-ish shit, dehumanization, some level of internalized and medical/instututional ableism. Dead dove, don't read unless you're prepared.}
Caoise Natter thinks her callsign is pretty darn clever.
Blue-Lack. The opposite of the sky. It makes sense for a combat operation that tends to go underground, right? But there’s more than just the one meaning, she has fucking layers. Symbology and shit.
Layer two: Unseen. Lack of sky means lack of light. If Cowie doesn’t want you to know where she is, you don’t get to know. The feeling of holding stealth as she closes the distance to a target, of sensor sweeps passing over her like the oblivious eyes of a horror movie redshirt— waiting for the ‘who’s there?’ before the big scare. It’s something she’s endlessly proud of. Even as a kid she would balance on high slopes around her house, perch and wait for Marten to wander by, searching; and she would plunge and they’d go howling down and pull and scratch at one another. Now imagine that in full chassis, not seven meters from someone actively looking to kill you? That’s skill, and Cowie has it in spades.
Then there’s the third layer.
Caoise’s finger drags through a wall of text displayed on her slate. The screen bathes her in the dimmest grayish-green light, set to a perpetual dark mode— carvings on smooth antigorite. It’s easier on the eyes. The SSC files are… so, so endlessly dense, and if this was any less personal she’d probably ask Lou or Aggie to give her the summary. The endless codes and official names make her vision dance, but slowly, slowly, she pieces together what she can through what she knows.
‘SGO OBJECTIVES:’ okay, sure sure, maybe that’s like a mission statement or something? ‘Subject’— yeah, so Subject Genetic something— ‘Subject markers consistent with Bonhyangi haplogroup FND. Variance WRT mitochondrial Eve horizon: >50’— No clue, but it says smaller-than, so maybe she’s like. Really really genetically Bohnyangi? Yeah, yeah! Okay, the little mad scientists kept writing: ‘Subject initially presents high potential for extrapolatory measures given continued reticence of POI to supply haplic materiel.’
Wait, oops, did she give away super special genes or something? She squints, brow furrowing. Maybe she should've asked for a sweeter deal. Still, maybe there’s some juicy stuff further down. She scrolls along, trying to glaze past the most opaque bits without missing anything. Test results fly by, keywords she recognizes as belonging to the chassis retrofit, some dates she remembers checking in with Concierge. There's field performance logs, vitals tracking-- despite the borderline creepy level of detail within, she finds herself smiling here and there. ‘Early results of field testing MPI "AFFINITY" promising. Ancillary nervous system interaction shows inductive endlag comparable to standard neural mesh; proposition for sidegrade research for implementation in primary BLOODLINE systems.’ Aha!! She's been pushing the field! Who needs cortex plugs or a single, glowing weakpoint on their design, when your whole body acts as the controls, right? Good job, Cowie.
Granted, the text goes on past here, so back to scrollin-- But the text stops speeding upwards and off the slate with just a single swipe. Beneath a flurry of test-log references, Caoise finds her eyes landing on a small paragraph of text:
‘...While SGO Objectives initially appeared promising, it is the opinion of AFFINITY medical attending that too many drawbacks exist to continue to focus research initiatives. Close-group embryonic testing of Subject genetic material with viable modulation and a brevity period of >2 generations shows very high/intransigent propensity of progressive hypersthesia; photophobia; Dravet syndrome; neruoinduction agonistic. SGO Objectives are concluded to be therefore unreasonable and further efforts to acquire fit Bohnyangi haplic materiel are encouraged.’
‘Further efforts to refine AFFINITY systems are to thus be discontinued and rolled into extant BLOODLINE research; standalone, the system is not projected to be scalable without some form of neuroinduction. In accordance with USB Medical Assurance Measure 1263.09.B, continued maintenance of Subject systems, wellbeing, etc, to be continued in perpetuity by qualified general personnel.’
Caoise doesn't move, eyes locked on the dark screen. Her mind works through the words, and something in her quietly steps back.
The third layer is humor; it's funny, isn't it? Because wasps are supposed to be able to fly, and her wings are clipped.

hey, i don't want to put you out or anything, i was just wondering if like off the top of your head if you knew any disability studies articles/books/whatever that center (or even just feature) tic/involuntary movement disorders?
so the answer to this was pretty much no but i spent a bit of time poking around and turned up this 2023 undergraduate honors thesis (link) by a student with tourette’s which seems like a solid starting point for going down the citation rabbit hole!
that piece is “The Embodied Performance of Tics and Tourette Syndrome in the Academic Environment” by Benjamin Allen; i’m only ~1/4th through rn but they argue for a continuum of ticcing + criticize the diagnostic system so i’m comfortable reccing it on that front! the (non-medical) tic-related works cited there are:
i also searched a handful of disability studies journals for a variety of keywords (movement disorder, tic, tourette’s, involuntary movement, chorea, huntington’s) but didn’t turn up much unfortunately, so all but the first of this next list include someone with tics and/or involuntary movements rather than being about moving involuntarily.
haven’t read these so i can’t speak to the politics / quality (although i’ll make a post if i’m able to read more) but here’s what seemed potentially relevant! also if anything is paywalled please don’t give T&F your money lol, try SciHub or if you can’t find something i can ask around for somebody with institutional access!
Cultural Differences in Reactions to Tics and Tic Severity (2021)
Using virtual reality to implement disability studies’ advocacy principles: uncovering the perspectives of people with disability (2023)
I had every right to be there: discriminatory acts towards young people with disabilities on public transport (2020)
From comedy targets to comedy-makers: disability and comedy in live performance (2015)
From the Case Files: Reconstructing a history of involuntary sterilisation (2010)
i also want to mention “Movements of the Uncontrollable Body Part Two” by Bronwyn Valentine (2019), a creative writing piece about her experiences of embodiment + ableism with spina bifida that i first read pretty soon after it was published & went looking for after developing my movement disorder a year ago because it was so impactful. @fndportal also has some incredibly vital work.
also if you haven’t already read Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s Staring: Why We Look, it’s not specifically about involuntary movements but definitely a core text for theorizing any visibilized disability.
i hope some of that is helpful!! if anybody checks any of these out i’d love to hear your thoughts/critiques! all the best to you & i hope these offer some resonance with + understanding of your experiences 💓💓

Dental SEO Marketing Agency
In today's competitive healthcare landscape, having a well-designed website is no longer enough to attract new patients. With most individuals turning to online search engines to find dental services, securing a strong position in local search rankings is essential for growth.
A dental SEO agency specializes in optimizing a practice's digital presence to ensure it appears prominently in search engine results, making it easier for potential patients to discover and choose their services. Through strategic SEO services for dentists, practices can improve online visibility, increase website traffic, and convert visitors into long-term patients.
Understanding the Importance of Local SEO for Dentists
Local SEO improves a website's ranking for searches conducted in a specific geographic area. For dental practices, ranking well in local search results can significantly impact patient acquisition and retention.
An SEO agency employs targeted strategies to help practices secure top positions in search results, including:
Optimizing Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) for enhanced local visibility
Utilizing location-based keywords to attract relevant searches
Managing online citations and directories to ensure consistent business information
Encouraging patient reviews and reputation management to establish trust
Enhancing website performance and mobile responsiveness for improved user experience
By implementing these key tactics, SEO services for dentists improve a practice's digital reach and ensure it remains competitive in the local market.
Tumblr media
How a Dental SEO Agency Improves Local Search Rankings
1. Optimizing Google Business Profile for Increased Visibility
A fully optimized Google Business Profile is essential for appearing in Google's “Local Pack"; the top three business listings displayed for local searches. A dental SEO agency ensures this profile is accurate and includes relevant keywords, updated business hours, high-quality images, and engaging patient reviews.
2. Implementing Targeted Keyword Strategies
Effective SEO relies on identifying and incorporating the right keywords. A top-ranked SEO agency conducts thorough keyword research to determine patients' search terms when looking for dental services.
These keywords are strategically placed in website content, meta descriptions, blog posts, and service pages to improve rankings. Examples of high-intent keywords include:
“Family dentist in [city]”
“Emergency dental care near me”
“Teeth whitening services in [location]”
By leveraging SEO services for dentists, practices can attract more qualified leads actively searching for dental care.
3. Building a Strong Backlink Profile
In backlinks, links from reputable websites to a dental practice's site are crucial ranking factors. An SEO agency works to acquire high-quality backlinks from authoritative sources such as industry blogs, dental directories, and local business associations. These backlinks enhance a website's credibility and improve its position in search rankings.
4. Enhancing Website Performance and User Experience
Website speed and mobile responsiveness are key factors in search engine rankings. Slow-loading websites or those that are not mobile-friendly can lead to higher bounce rates, negatively impacting SEO performance.
Through professional SEO services, websites are optimized for:
Faster loading times
Mobile compatibility across all devices
Intuitive navigation and user-friendly layouts
Clear call-to-action (CTA) buttons for appointment scheduling
These enhancements improve search rankings and create a seamless user experience, encouraging potential patients to engage with the practice.
5. Managing Online Reviews and Reputation
Online reviews are critical in patient decision-making and search engine rankings. Google prioritizes businesses with frequent, high-quality reviews, as they signal credibility and trustworthiness.
A dental SEO agency helps practices implement effective reputation management strategies, including:
Encouraging satisfied patients to leave positive reviews
Responding professionally to patient feedback
Addressing concerns promptly to maintain a positive online reputation
These efforts contribute to higher local rankings and increased patient trust in the practice.
The Long-Term Benefits of SEO for Dental Practices
SEO is not a one-time solution but an ongoing process that yields long-term results. Unlike paid advertisements that stop generating traffic once the budget is exhausted, SEO continues to drive organic traffic and patient inquiries over time.
Investing in SEO services ensures:
Higher website traffic and improved patient conversion rates
A competitive edge over other dental practices in the area
Sustainable online growth with minimal reliance on paid advertising
Increased brand authority and credibility in the dental industry
By partnering with a top-ranked SEO agency, practices can maintain strong search rankings, adapt to evolving SEO trends, and consistently attract new patients.
Conclusion: Strengthening Digital Presence with Professional SEO
For dental practices seeking to expand their patient base and improve online visibility, a strategic approach to SEO is essential. With expert guidance from a dental SEO agency, practices can enhance their local search rankings, increase website engagement, and build a strong digital presence.
Through tailored SEO services for dentists, practices can optimize their websites, attract targeted traffic, and convert online searches into real-world appointments. By investing in long-term SEO strategies, dental professionals can ensure continued growth and success in an increasingly digital landscape.

Are We Creating Ourselves, or Just Performing for the Algorithm?
Keywords: body image, aesthetic labor, social media culture, digital self
Social media platforms are saturated with flawless selfies, edited bodies, and carefully curated aesthetics that adhere to narrow and repetitive beauty ideals. These ideals often follow what are known as aesthetic templates - standardized styles, poses, and modifications that define what is considered “beautiful” in digital spaces. These templates are not merely about self-expression but function as codes to gain social validation through likes, followers, and visibility.
Maintaining an online presence that aligns with these trends requires what scholars define as aesthetic labor - the continuous effort people invest in altering their appearance, both physically and digitally, to fit within accepted norms (Dean, 2005). This kind of labor is especially prevalent in microcelebrity, where individuals brand themselves for online consumption, blurring the boundaries between personal identity and commercial persona (Senft, 2012). However, even beyond influencers, these pressures extend to ordinary users who need to conform to the same polished standards to feel seen.
Recent cases highlight the urgency of this issue. In early 2024, TikTok implemented restrictions on the use of beauty filters for teenagers after public concern that these filters were contributing to appearance-based anxiety and lowering self-esteem. The platform acknowledged that repeated exposure to altered faces could lead to mental health issues, especially among adolescents navigating their formative years online (Booth 2024). This follows earlier findings from Instagram’s internal research, which revealed that one in three teenage girls felt worse about their bodies after using the app, primarily due to comparison with filtered and idealized images (Gayle 2021).
Beyond mental health, the impact of aesthetic standards has manifested in real-world consequences. Hunt (2019) reported a rise in “Snapchat dysmorphia,” a term used to describe individuals seeking cosmetic procedures to resemble their filtered selfies. Surgeons have noted an increase in young patients requesting enhancements to achieve digital-like features - such as smooth skin, larger lips, or contoured faces - demonstrating how online beauty templates can shape offline body modification practices.
Tumblr media
Filters are more widespread than ever before, prompting some individuals to pursue cosmetic enhancements like fillers, Botox, and other aesthetic treatments.
Social media’s preference for sexualized content further compounds this issue. The concept of pornification - the encouragement of users to present themselves in a sexualized manner to gain attention - is driven by algorithmic logic that rewards visibility and engagement with such imagery (Tyler & Quek, 2016). This results in users modifying not only their appearance but their behavior to match what platforms deem profitable or popular.
The emotional consequences of this environment are stark. The 2022 BBC documentary Disordered Eating by Zara McDermott explores the connection between social media and the rising rates of eating disorders among young people. It presents personal narratives and expert commentary to highlight how constant exposure to slim, idealized bodies fosters disordered eating habits and body dissatisfaction (BBC 2022). These stories reflect the psychological toll of aesthetic labor, where worth is measured against an unattainable ideal curated for digital approval.
Tumblr media
Zara explores the rise in eating disorders and asks if social media is the problem.
The cycle of comparison, modification, and validation driven by social media algorithms transforms personal identity into a performance and bodies into commodities. The pressure to adhere to digital beauty norms erodes self-esteem and encourages both mental and physical alterations, raising critical questions about agency, authenticity, and well-being in the age of algorithmic aesthetics.
