wada sez: The strip after this one, easily the most notable Mosaic strip published, was explicitly released to celebrate the third anniversary of the Mosaic project—so I reckon it was intentional that this one was timed to coincide. Recognise the name Eric Holmes? That’s the writer of Megatron Origin! There’s no connection beyond that, however, with this being a straightforward standalone little character vignette inspired by Red Alert’s original Budiansky profile.

I can never truly claim that Sherlock Holmes is a small fandom despite nobody my age in my city even really knowing abt it because it USED to be so popular and adapted every five seconds but it ISNT anymore and everyone only knows bbc sherlock which is FINE but I'm DISAPPOINTED and-

what do you think of the BBC Sherlock?

I'm so glad you asked, Nonny! (Though you might not be. We'll see!) And I'm curious what made you do so, but here goes.

My feelings are complicated. I love Sherlock Holmes. I've loved Sherlock Holmes in some form since I was 9 years old (that's like, 1988 for those of you keeping score at home). My undergrad thesis was about how we've used this character in various forms throughout the decades to tell different stories about ourselves. So I'm really into reframing and rehashing these stories.

So when it started, I loved BBC Sherlock. I thought Cumberbatch was electric, and even more I loved how Freeman actually gave me a new lease on Watson that I hadn't really felt before. I really enjoyed the first series and some of the second. I felt that it was a really interesting update, that it did a great job of integrating case elements into a new idiom, it was stylish and fun. But I soon became disenchanted with elements I later realized I saw in a lot of Moffat's work: his idolization of assholery, his insistence all women be Moms or Dommes, his thing where all gay couples have weird power imbalances built in, and generally I felt as it went on it got further from what I had enjoyed about it to begin with.

But I do want to stress that BBC Sherlock is hugely important not simply because of what it is in itself, but what it's brought me and the fandom. New blood is essential, and a lot of people kept loving Sherlock but also entered the larger Holmesian world. It brought me my lovely ex-roommate, @strangelock. It led me to a local Sherlock Holmes society I attend every month, with new friends and community. It probably got society more into Holmes such that unrelated to BBC, Holmes plays got put on I got to be in, actually playing Sherlock Holmes himself; a dream I never knew I was allowed to have. It reignited my love of Holmes such that I have parlayed it into a film class and new writing.

I am going to stop there, because I could go on forever, but if you would like elaboration on any of that I'm clearly happy to expound.

Character Lineup for My Deltarune Chapter 3 Take

NEW LIGHTNERS: Toriel: In the dark world, she is a powerful pyromancer! This is a first in a long time since she’s done anything engaging with Kris. She’s had her concerns about Kris for a while now, but this also feels like a great opportunity for her to understand her child. Will she take it?

Undyne: In the dark word, she’s now an ace detective! Just had her whole worldview flipped on her head and is loving it. But she’s still on her own investigation into who slashed the tires and caused this anomaly. Anyone who gets in her way will be beaten with a huge magnifying glass.

Napstablook: The Dr. Watson to Undyne’s Sherlock Holmes. Somehow, they got roped into helping Undyne investigate Toriel’s slashed tires. Now they’re just here for emotional support. Wait, is that mustache real?

NEW DARKNERS: Chairiel: She runs a cozy little shop in the sprawling desert of Dreamy Drylands. Anyone who enters her shop is greeted with a great big hug. She’s also got plenty of stories to tell!

Tenna: The shady director of Cathode Entertainment and the mayor of Back Stage City. He wasn’t always super mean and bossy, but nobody can figure out why he changed his ways.

C. Rook: The new producer and the head honcho of all the Shadowmen. He may or may not be the actual one responsible for why Cathode Entertainment has been turned upside down.

Lil’ Cutie Pie Once a beloved kids show star, she was forced to change jobs by Tenna to become a full-time chef. Her mood flips between cheerful to hateful constantly, and its got others wondering if her cutesy demeanor is all a facade.

Weather Duo: Always Sunny and Partly Cloudy have always been passionate about reporting the news and for each other. Ever since the recent changes, they’re no longer allowed to show their love when they work together. Maybe with some Lightner intervention, they can be a true couple again!

Mike: The loudmouthed ex-producer of Cathode Entertainment who’s currently on the run. He was once best friends with Tenna, but now is currently investigating into his sudden change in demeanor.

The Scareiff: He was once the star of his own show until someone, thought to have been a fan of his, got too close to him. When him and his show started going downhill, he was swiftly booted from the crew and his show was cancelled. Nobody knows where he is now, but it must be somewhere out in that desert.

...So there's a slightly different take on the current new-cover-for-old-book project (backstory here): changed font, changed clothes.

The font is Crenzo, which I'd never noticed before I was looking around yesterday to see what more SF-ish fonts might be available at the DIY cover-making site. I kind of like the slightly Babylon 5-y look of the font with that texture applied. ...The clothes are this set from Daz. The coat's got a good number of controls that allow for faking the blowing-in-the-wind look without having to mess with simulated draping routines.

A couple of things to handle later in the day:

(a) I forget what color Lee's hair is, but it is not white. (We have enough white-haired or going-white characters running around in my universes as it is. I'm beginning to think my birth mother was frightened by Morgaine kri Chya while carrying me.) 😅 ...Have to have a word with the specific hair appliance and change it to something darker so it'll render properly with the current lighting.

(b) If I'm going to stay with the silver-white look of the main lettering, probably I need to dial back either the brightness or the saturation of the alpenglow effect in the background.

(pushing all this to one side) And now it's time to get on with more serious business (which is due to be turned in next week). Apparently foreign royalty has turned up at an AU version of 221B to ask for Sherlock Holmes's help, because there's about to be a murder...

So I did what I always did in motels: grabbed the top blanket, the little knitted one, and crawled under the bed. Everything was soft and dim, if a little smelly. Kris and Maggie’s voices were distant and unclear. I dozed off quickly, and my dreams were full of soft snowy forests, and always running away. Back to normal.
