Eurovision Fact #207:

2013 was a landmark event as it showcased Eurovision's first lesbian kiss. Finland's singer Krista Siegfrids kissed one of her backup singers at the end of her performance of 'Marry Me.'

The whole song and kiss were protests against the fact that gay marriage was illegal in Finland at the time. However, the song was not pulled for being a political statement as it wasn't (seemingly) directly about gay marriage and equality. Moreover, Siegfrids said that she would only do the "stunt" live so "...nobody [could] stop [her]."

The event caused quite a stir with eastern European countries and especially Türkiye and Greece.

After Krista Siegfrids' lesbian kiss on stage during the 2013 contest, hosts of the 2014 contest took note and supported her message. Officials in Denmark worked in tandem with the schedule of the contest and invited all same sex (and opposite sex) couples coming to the country to watch Eurovision the chance to get married.

During the dates of the contest, couples were invited to specific open air locations so they could get married (a common event in Denmark).
