The Philosophy of Natural Language
The philosophy of natural language is a branch of philosophy that explores the nature, origins, and use of language as it is naturally spoken and understood by human beings. It involves the study of how language functions in communication, the relationship between language and thought, the structure and meaning of linguistic expressions, and the role of context in understanding meaning. This field intersects with linguistics, cognitive science, logic, and semiotics, aiming to understand both the abstract properties of language and its practical use in everyday life.
Key Concepts in the Philosophy of Natural Language:
Meaning and Reference:
Semantics: One of the central concerns of the philosophy of natural language is the study of meaning, known as semantics. Philosophers explore how words and sentences convey meaning, how meaning is structured, and how language relates to the world.
Reference: Reference is the relationship between linguistic expressions and the objects or entities they refer to in the world. Philosophers like Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam have contributed to understanding how names, descriptions, and other expressions refer to things in the world.
Pragmatics:
Context and Meaning: Pragmatics deals with how context influences the interpretation of language. It examines how speakers use language in different contexts and how listeners infer meaning based on context, intentions, and social norms.
Speech Acts: Philosophers such as J.L. Austin and John Searle have explored how utterances can do more than convey information—they can perform actions, such as making promises, giving orders, or asking questions.
Syntax and Grammar:
Structure of Language: Syntax is the study of the rules and principles that govern the structure of sentences in natural languages. Philosophers and linguists investigate how words are combined to form meaningful sentences and how these structures relate to meaning.
Universal Grammar: The concept of universal grammar, proposed by Noam Chomsky, suggests that the ability to acquire language is innate to humans and that there are underlying grammatical principles common to all languages.
Language and Thought:
Linguistic Relativity: The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis suggests that the structure of a language influences how its speakers perceive and think about the world. Philosophers debate the extent to which language shapes thought and whether different languages lead to different cognitive processes.
Conceptual Frameworks: Language is often seen as providing the conceptual framework through which we interpret the world. Philosophers examine how language structures our understanding of reality and whether it limits or expands our cognitive abilities.
Philosophy of Meaning:
Theories of Meaning: Various theories of meaning have been proposed in the philosophy of language, including:
Descriptivist Theories: These suggest that the meaning of a word or phrase is equivalent to a description associated with it.
Causal Theories: These argue that meaning is determined by a causal relationship between words and the things they refer to.
Use Theories: Inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein, these theories claim that the meaning of a word is determined by its use in the language.
Language and Reality:
Metaphysical Implications: Philosophers explore how language relates to reality, including how linguistic structures might reflect or distort our understanding of the world. This involves questions about whether language mirrors reality or if it plays a role in constructing our experience of reality.
Ontology of Language: This concerns the nature of the entities that linguistic expressions refer to, such as whether abstract objects (like numbers or properties) exist independently of language.
Communication and Interpretation:
Hermeneutics: Hermeneutics is the study of interpretation, particularly of texts. Philosophers in this tradition, such as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, explore how understanding is achieved in communication and how meaning is negotiated between speakers and listeners.
Ambiguity and Vagueness: Natural language often contains ambiguity and vagueness, where words or sentences can have multiple interpretations. Philosophers study how these features affect communication and understanding.
Language and Social Interaction:
Language as a Social Phenomenon: Language is inherently social, and its use is governed by social norms and conventions. Philosophers study how language functions in social contexts, how power dynamics influence language, and how language can both reflect and shape social structures.
Language Games: Wittgenstein introduced the concept of "language games" to describe how the meaning of words is tied to their use in specific forms of life or social practices. This concept emphasizes the diversity of language use and the idea that meaning is context-dependent.
Evolution of Language:
Origins of Language: Philosophers and cognitive scientists explore how language evolved in humans, the relationship between language and other forms of communication in animals, and the cognitive capacities required for language.
Language Change: Natural languages are dynamic and constantly evolving. Philosophers study how languages change over time and what this reveals about the nature of meaning and communication.
Critique of Language:
Deconstruction: Philosophers like Jacques Derrida have critiqued traditional notions of language and meaning, arguing that language is inherently unstable and that meaning is always deferred, never fully present or fixed.
Critical Theory: In the tradition of critical theory, philosophers analyze how language can perpetuate power structures, ideologies, and social inequalities, and how it can be used to resist and challenge these forces.
The philosophy of natural language offers a rich and complex exploration of how language functions, how it relates to thought and reality, and how it shapes human interaction and understanding. By examining the nature of meaning, reference, context, and the social dimensions of language, philosophers aim to uncover the fundamental principles that govern linguistic communication and the role of language in human life.

Linguistic Relativity: Does Language Shape Our Reality?
The Hypothesis The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity, presents a captivating proposition: the structure and vocabulary of a language influence the way its speakers perceive and interact with the world. As we embark on an exploration of this intriguing concept, we delve into the depths of linguistic relativity, questioning the extent to which language serves as a…

I think what gets under my skin about people acting like Dan and Phil are intentionally trying to exclude people from the tour or merch drops, is that it shows they don’t know anything about how international markets work or how DnP are at the whims of them.
The thing that’s so brain rotted about the so called “leftist” internet is the CONSTANT use of individualistic thinking to bully people. When a big part of being a leftist is trying to breakdown that kind of thinking. There could be a million reasons why they can’t ship things truly globally. We live in a world that disproportionately excludes the global south. DnP live inside the same system that we do. They only have so much motion as Internet celebrities.
From my understanding it’s that the shipment company they’re using doesn’t do wider international shipping, or it would be too expensive, and they could be caught up in a contract that lasts for X amount of years or for X amount of money. Or it could just be the same thing with the tour “you don’t have enough fans in this region. We won’t ship there.” Business can be a real crapshoot guys.
Is it okay to be upset that you can’t get their merch? Yes. Is it understandable to want DnP to be more transparent about the how and why they can’t do certain things? Yes.
Is it reasonable to tweet hateful things at them or snakily implying they hate their international fans? Absolutely not.
Dan and Phil are just two guys at the end of the day. Two guys who’ve been open about doing a lot of things in house. There are going to be blind spots and errors and I just wish when things like this happens we can act like adults and not cannibalize each other or DnP.
#dan and phil#fandom wank#I’m going to put on my tin foil hat for a second and say that most of the people foaming at the mouth about this probably aren’t-#from the regions that can’t get the merch#I don’t live in those areas so I wouldn’t know#BUT I do know white buffoonery when I see it#language policing and using genuine issue as a cudgel to be a dick online and start drama#isn’t used by anyone interested in a serious conversation#it’s always okay to want more from dan and phil but please do it inside reality

this is a shifting exercise created by @zaddizu thank you so much for making this!

࿔ WHAT IS YOUR NAME? :my name is Love Ma Cherie Sinclair, which translates to Love My Sweetheart Sinclair in English. When I was born my parents hadn't come up with a name yet, when I was born my dad held me into his arms telling me how much he loved me! There the name was born; my middle name came from my dad! (he comes from French origins) while I was still in his arms he continuously repeated those words over and over! There my middle name was born.
࿔ FAVORITE FOOD? :I love birria tacos, I'm talking I get it everytime I see it! I cannot get enough.
࿔ WHAT IS A SONG YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE FOR IN YOUR HEART? : easy honeymoon avenue by Ariana grande! I mean its the inspiration behind my username. When I was a little girl I heard that song for the first time and it was so good I became a stan for life! Till this day it makes me cry just out of pure nostalgia.
࿔ FAVORITE COLOR, GO! :pink yesterday, pink today, pink tomorrow, and pink FOREVER!
࿔ NAME THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO YOU :cliche answer but it's cliche for a reason, obviously my family (more specifically my sister) she is my other half, she completes me, I do not want I would do without her in my life, she made me the person I am and I would not trade her for anything else in this world. There would not even be a better cr if I didn't have my sister because she puts the "better" in better cr.
࿔ IN A CROWDED ROOM, WHO WOULD YOU LOOK FOR FIRST? :easy my sister! but after that it would be my best friend, they are the two most important women in my life (not including my mom and grandmom of course)
࿔ BEST MUSIC GENRE? : r&b! I mean I'm black it's in my roots, ain't nothing like a nice slow r&b song to end your day with. I'm talking Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, etc. I can always find myself going back to an r&b ballad.
࿔ A TOPIC YOU DEFEND WITH YOUR LIFE :billionaires should not exist and capitalism is slowing (I don't know so much about slowly anymore) killing us. I do not care what reality I'm in billionaires do not exist, I do not understand why someone should have a billionaire dollars. Even in my Dr where homelessness is not a thing a human does NOT need that much money. And as far as capitalism...if I get into that this would no longer be an intro to my better cr. Oh my gosh and don't get me started on AI.
࿔ GUN TO YOUR HEAD...ARE YOU FUNNY? :is the sky blue, is grass green, does Elon musk looked like an alien with botched filler?
࿔ FRUIT OR CANDY PLATTER? :imagine a big bowl full of mangoes, pineapple, grapes, watermelon, strawberries, kiwi, and peaches. You are sitting there with a big spoon in your hand to assist you, now imagine a bowl of gummy worms and m&ms....man give me the fruit.
࿔ SUGAR, SOUR, OR SPICE? :sour is an easy no, sugar or spice? mhm...spicy food would be more savory and I like savory foods more than sweets so I'ma go with spicy!
࿔ AMBIVERT, INTROVERT, OR EXTROVERT? :ambivert/extrovert. This is my reality, I'm the star, I need all eyes on me.
࿔ WHO WAS YOUR FIRST LOVE? DO YOU REGRET IT? :Ivy. My best friend in fact she is my first and only love. I'm not going to expound too much on our relationship because it's very personal, but let's just say I don't regret it not one bit.

close your eyes and lean against their shoulder. take a deep breath and know you're home. hear their laugh as you sigh against their skin. let their fingers thread through your hair to massage your head, helping with the stress and pressure. rub your thumb against the skin of their arm, focusing on it, taking in how real it is. sigh and pull away, rearranging yourselves so now you've got their arm wrapped around you, head on their shoulder, and they're gently squeezing your shoulders.

Language, Thought, and Reality: The Interplay of Human Understanding
Language is more than a mere tool for communication; it's a fundamental element of human cognition that significantly shapes our perception of reality. The intricate relationship between language, thought, and reality has intrigued philosophers, linguists, and cognitive scientists for centuries. This intricate interplay not only influences how we express our ideas but also defines the very nature of our thoughts and, by extension, the way we perceive the world.
Language as a Lens to Reality
One of the most influential ideas in this realm is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which posits that the structure and vocabulary of a language can mold and constrain the way its speakers think about the world. This concept comes in two flavors: linguistic determinism and linguistic relativism. Linguistic determinism suggests that language entirely determines the way we think, limiting our thoughts to what is expressible in our language. Linguistic relativism, on the other hand, holds that language influences thought but doesn't strictly determine it.
Consider, for instance, the linguistic distinction between colors. Languages vary in how they categorize and label colors. Some have more words for different shades of blue, while others may combine colors that speakers of different languages consider distinct. This variation can affect how people perceive and categorize colors. If a language doesn't have a distinct word for a certain shade, its speakers may be less likely to perceive it as a separate entity. In this way, language can serve as a lens through which we view and define our reality.
The Mind's Toolkit: Language and Concepts
Language, in its complexity, provides us with a toolkit for understanding and categorizing the world. Words are not just labels but also containers of meaning and concepts. They define boundaries, allowing us to separate, categorize, and convey information. The very presence of specific words in a language implies the importance of these distinctions to its speakers.
Furthermore, the structural components of a language, such as syntax and grammar, govern how ideas are connected and expressed. They provide a blueprint for how concepts are related within the realm of thought. Thus, language helps us not only to classify the world but also to construct our understanding of it.
The Cultural Dimension
It's important to recognize that language isn't just an individual phenomenon. It is deeply entwined with culture. The language a person speaks is often a reflection of their cultural background and can encompass shared beliefs, values, and worldviews. Cultural linguistics explores how a language's unique features emerge from and influence the culture it is embedded in.
Beyond Language
While the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and the study of linguistic relativity highlight the significance of language in shaping thought and reality, they are not without controversy. Critics argue that thought and perception are not solely dictated by language. Concepts like non-verbal communication, universal human experiences, and innate cognitive structures challenge the idea of linguistic determinism.
In the grand scheme of philosophy, the relationship between language, thought, and reality remains an open question. Language undoubtedly plays a vital role in shaping our perception of the world, but its extent and limits continue to be topics of philosophical inquiry.
As we ponder the intricate connection between language, thought, and reality, we gain insight into the profound ways in which human beings engage with and understand the world. This philosophical exploration enriches our understanding of the human experience and broadens the horizons of cognitive science, linguistics, and cultural studies.

I also would like people to give more appreciation to the great thematic unity in all of The Lord of the Rings. The idea is “do what good you can with what you are given.” Usually your abilities and your chances seem horribly small, even though your responsibility is so enormous. The minutes, the little decisions, the days, the small towns, the small characters, matter the most. The fate of the whole big world of good and evil and languages and races and heroes and villains all hangs on what’s done by a little scholar and his gardener.
#It’s every bit as complicated and uncomplicated as that#Tolkien might be obsessed with little details like history and languages for every region of his made-up world#but that’s because he knew that little details matter in life and in literature because they make up reality.#the lord of the rings#lotr#lord of the rings#the shire#Mordor#Aragorn#Frodo#middle-earth#Sam gamgee#Sméagol#one ring#Sauron#Gandalf

ig another annoying thing about the 'this transcends language 😲😱' comments about the most obvious of cognates and literal english loanwords, is that it's another example of how native english speakers (and, by virtue of their population size, mostly USamericans) are the arbiters of what gets seen as 'universal' vs what's weird and foreign on the anglophone internet. cause to me as a dutch speaker, a lot of german compound words would '''transcend language''' - but the tweets that go viral about those kinds of words are about how they're silly little nonsense words to laugh at, can't be a real language, can you believe anyone speaks that!
#can you belíeve those germanic languages call a glove a hand-shoe! can you believe all those languages that call a potato an earth-apple! XD#they're not -real- languages!#joos yaps#and thats how you get native dutch speakers apologizing for how dumb and silly their actual language is. not like -english- oooh#and i know it's not actually a huge deal. on the scene of 'people who have their languages made fun of'#western europeans are certainly some of the more deserving#but when it comes from monolingual usamericans who are the type to unironically say shit like cognates transcending language#its just dissapointingly shallow and often only based on their own mispronounciations and unexamined biases#delete later#this has a small subcategory that swings the other way instead#where people are aware of a few unique qualities of english that they took for granted#and then posit english as a uniquely weird language#im not a linguist so idk how weird english is on the whole#but i do know that ive seen examples like 'ough english is SO quirky. when we say 'yeah no' we mean no and 'no yeah' is yes!#how's anyone supposed to learn this XD!'#and it's like ok but that's actually quite common across many cultures as far as im aware#(assuming they HAVE 'yes' and 'no')#open your mind to the reality that basically every language is as deep as english is. not always in the same areas obviously#but every language has quirks and fun words and interesting grammar and their own metaphors and ways to signify respect and history etc etc#... yeah this should be deleted later#i talk way too much for someone who has no idea what she's talking about

One of my favorite little moments in Slay the Princess is when you choose to examine her chains, because the Narrator blatantly, brazenly, successfully manipulates your reality, and if you aren't already in the know, you'd never notice.

Oh, really? I can't even imagine breaking these chains? Well, there's no reason for me not to believe that, so it must be true. You are a voice of authority, The Narrator, after all. How about a key?

Well, if it's that illogical for a key to be somewhere around here, I guess there's no point in even looking.
I haven't played the Pristine Cut routes, so I may be wrong, but I can't think of a single path where you ever question these assumptions. You can't break the chain, and there is no key, because somebody matter-of-factly put those ideas into your head the moment he could.
#the narrator is constantly doing this stuff#disagreeing with you to try to get your reality to match the one he wants#but this one is just so#simultaneously sneaky and obvious#the language that he uses to make you believe these things because he needs you to#man I actually sympathise with the narrator so much#like obviously he's WRONG but he really is trying to do good and he's playing such a delicate and dangerous game#slay the princess#my rambles
