Rachel Zegler's casting as Maria in West Side Story, Disney's Snow White, and now Shakespeare's Juliet onstage is very interesting, because of the way all three characters are connected.

Maria, of course, is directly based on Juliet, since West Side Story is a Romeo and Juliet retelling.

But Disney's Snow White (the animated version) has a fair amount of Juliet-inspired imagery about her too. I've posted about this before. Like Juliet, Snow White is 14 years old, which I've always suspected is no coincidence. The imagery in "One Song," with Snow White standing on a balcony as the Prince woos her from below, is obviously Romeo and Juliet-like. Later, from the poisoned apple, Snow White falls into a state that looks like death, but isn't really death; unlike in the Grimm's tale, where she really dies but removing the piece of apple from her mouth brings her back to life, in the Disney film the victim of "sleeping death" is explicitly still alive all along. ("Buried alive!" as the Queen gloats) In short, the apple is like Juliet's potion, except it doesn't wear off. And when the Prince approaches Snow White's coffin and kisses her lips, he looks like the classic image of Romeo approaching Juliet's bier and kissing her lips before his suicide. When Snow White was in production, the 1936 film version of Romeo and Juliet starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer had just been released, and Walt Disney had his animators watch the balcony and tomb scenes as a reference for Snow White and the Prince's two love scenes. Even Snow White's hairstyle looks like a slightly shorter version of Norma Shearer's hairstyle as Juliet. And in 1939, on the heels of Snow White's great success, her voice actress Adriana Caselotti spoke the line "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" during the Tin Man's song in The Wizard of Oz.

How strangely fitting that the current decade should see Juliet, Maria, and Snow White all played by the same actress!

(For that matter, Rachel Zegler isn't the only West Side Story Maria with a Disney Princess connection. Natalie Wood, who played Maria in the original 1961 film, was one of the actresses used by Disney animators as a model for Belle in Beauty and the Beast – allegedly they had photos of her in the studio to literally draw inspiration from – and the 1961 film's camera angles as Tony dies in her arms are recreated fairly closely for the Beast's "death" in Belle's arms. But that's another story.)

Is Warner Bros. Studio Doomed?

Leslie Grace's Batgirl film was axed, and it was the ultimate gut-punch for DC fans. However, that wasn't the only major disaster that hit the studio this year. When AT&T purchased WBD Many believed that Kevin Tsujihara would be the man to lead it into the streaming age. However, he's been through one of the worst years at the studio. Doom Movie Loses Its Home A film based off the Doom video game franchise has been in development, and it looks like that a sequel is on the way. The initial film was so bad that it cost the studio the prestigious Doom Tour, one of the most popular of their attractions. The Doom film is a paint-by-numbers action flick that features some of the bloodiest violence you'll ever see on the screen. The film tries to replicate the blood and violence of the games, however it does not have the depth that was what made these elements so memorable. Karl Urban starred in the Doom film as John Grimm. He was the leader of an elite special forces unit sent to Prague to look into a mysterious structure. It featured Lorenzo di Bonaventura and John Wells producing, with music video director Enda McCallion as the director. The film was scheduled to be shot in the winter of 2004 and 2005, before it was released on August 5, 2005. The film was subsequently panned by critics, and it failed at the box office. James Gunn and Dana Safran take over as DC's new Head Hosts There's a lot Gunn and Safran have to accomplish, from rearranging several DC projects into coherent films to developing a comprehensive plan to ensure that the studio is able to be able to compete consistently with Marvel. Gunn and Safran will need to do their best to create a separation between the DC universes that frequently clash. They'll also need ensure that they deliver top films to their audiences. Gunn has been the director of a number of DC films, including the recent Suicide Squad reboot and HBO Max's Peacemaker, while Safran has produced those in addition to the Joker movie. The Safran Company also shares an initial look deal with Safran, which is the reason they were considered serious contenders for Zaslav's replacement for Hamada. The two will be working on a plan that's more similar to Pixar, with filmmakers also serving as directors. This isn't an entirely new idea in the TV world, but it's never used before in the live action film industry. Rooster Teeth Disputes After two decades of success and controversy Rooster Teeth appears to be going under. The Austin, Texas based gaming and animation studio renowned for its games, such as Achievement Hunter, as well as animated series like Red vs Blue and RWBY Recently, it was accused of creating a hostile workplace environment that is exploitation of employees. Former employee Kdin Jenzen, who used the pronouns they/they wrote in a blog that they had been subjected to homophobia and sexism as as other forms of abuse when working for the company. Jenzen's treatment was said to have been worse when she was outed in 2016 as trans. Jenzen says they were subjected to a culture that was based on underpaying and lack of respect since their pay was significantly lower than the industry norm. Rooster Teeth has since released an apology for the "disgusting unacceptable, inhumane, and inhumane treatment" Jenzen claims to have received. The company also pledged to resolve its problems by forming business resource groups to target marginalized communities and enhancing management training. The Messiest Year is 2022.

A new YouGov survey has found that a lot of Americans think 2022 has been an awful or horrible year. And that's probably because of all the blunders at Warner Bros. DC the division of the company, known as the DC division, seems to be in constant turmoil. Studio was once a leader in the genre of superheroes, but it is now a string of misfires. The company's decision to rescind Leslie Grace’s Batgirl film was the most recent setback. The film was said to be ready for production and had even had test screenings. But the film was canceled without explanation for the fans who had been waiting forever. Another major mess involved Rocksteady the gaming studio behind the Batman: Arkham series. According to reports, the studio compelled engineers to create multiplayer games in order to meet a deadline. This led to morale issues within the company. According to reports that the team is planning to switch to single-player games. This might aid in their recovery. This won't be an easy journey. Video embeds anchors:

I do not really pay attention to the rumour mill at Watford. I have enough stuff to deal with, namely my parents’ inevitable divorce. I am so glad to be at Watford and away from home. I realised something was off during the summer.

Another issue that I have is that I have to admit that Arnold was right about one thing: I like looking at Agatha Wellbelove.

Quite funny. The first situation makes me lose all doubt in romance, but the second one turns me into a hopeless romantic. I got paired up with Agatha during an experiment for Elocution and it went terrible, since I couldn’t speak around her.

So yeah, I have a lot on my mind.

This is why it completely escaped me that our Chosen One, Simon Snow, is out here telling people that his nemesis Tyrannus is a vampire.

“It’s not as if anyone believes him,” John says.

“Believes who?” I ask.

“That Baz Pitch is a vampire!” Leslie exclaims, “Oh come on, Matty Chris D., you must’ve heard. Simon Snow practically shouted it.”

“Who is Baz Pitch?”

“Tyrannus,” John says as an explanation. Huh. So his name isn’t Tyrannus?

“Have you been living under a rock, Matt?” Ryan says with disbelief, “Everyone knows of the heir of the Pitches Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch, or Baz for short.”

“Of course I know of him!” I say, “Wasn’t his mother the Headmistress before the Mage? The one who died in the vampire attack? I just didn’t know people call him Baz. I don’t really care about him, to be honest.”

“Fair, me neither,” Sam says, “But even I know him, and even I know about the rumour.”

“The stupid rumour,” John says. It’s as if he is making sure no one believes it. “Simon Snow probably knows about the Watford Tragedy too and now he thinks he’s connected the dots. I won’t be surprised if those Gates are impacting his thoughts.”

“Gates?” Scott raises an eyebrow.

John nods.

“Yeah, that’s why he’s been missing classes. He’s looking for some sort of Gates. And those Gates are dangerous!”

“Honestly, it must be nice to have a reason to skip class,” Luis jokes and others laugh along, but I don’t. John doesn’t either. We lock eyes and I know we’re both thinking about that moment of last year.

Simon Snow does miss class. I don’t care.

But then he misses again.

And again.

And again.

Not only that, but his friend Penelope Bunce isn’t attending classes either, and that’s extremely weird. Weirdly enough, she’s not the reason something feels off. Sure, she usually is very present in class, constantly asking questions and adding her own commentary, but it’s Simon’s absence that is weirding me out.

I usually do not care about his presence in class, since he doesn’t participate as much as Penelope Bunce or Tyrannus- oh, I mean, Baz Pitch, but his absence is noticeable because there is a lack of magic surrounding us. I didn’t know I had gotten so used to the great Chosen One leaking magic until now.

Not only that, but we’re safe. There hasn’t been an attack on Watford since he went missing. I’ve only been personally involved with an attack once, when some worsegoers disrupted a meeting of the Watford Chess Club. Humdrum attacks are terrible, because the empty, sucking feeling of a dead spot always comes with it.

(Call me an arsehole, but I prefer climate change over this magic sucking thing.)

Of course Simon Snow saved the day and we were able to continue playing chess.

So yes, I am aware of the smaller attacks that happen on a regular basis, even when I am not personally affected by them. Everyone is, because everyone seems to have a Simon Snow story.

And now there’s nothing. We’re safe, hooray, but this doesn’t feel right either.

It’s… unsettling in its own way.

Simon Snow and Penelope Bunce are officially missing.

Mitali Bunce, Penelope’s mother, is also a woman to watch out for, because she had no issues blowing up in the Mage’s face in front of the entire student body. The moment it became clear her daughter had gone missing, she’s been in a state of determined disarray. I didn’t know that was a state anyone could be in.

Simon Snow is famously an orphan. That’s why he’s the Mage’s Heir, after all, but if what Mitali Bunce is saying is right, then the Mage is doing a shit job being Simon’s guardian.

“Do you believe it?” Scott asks later that day at chess club practise.

“What?” John asks.

“That the Mage is responsible for the disappearance?” Luis adds.

I don’t know and to be honest, I don’t care, but I also cannot deny that today is a weird day. And, well, Luis has a point. It seems like Simon Snow has been investigating some Gates, because the Mage ordered him to. And Penelope Bunce is the perfect best friend-slash-sidekick, so of course she accompanied him, whether the Mage wanted to or not.

Apparently, these Gates turn people a bit mad, which is why Simon Snow was yapping all about Baz (still weird) Pitch being a vampire. (Really, why give your child a name like Tyrannus, only to not use it?)

“Isn’t it a bit weird?” Arnold pops in.

“How so?”

“Well, these Gates have negative consequences,” he says.

“Like the whole vampire disillusion,” John adds.

Arnold nods.

“So, why does the Mage keep sending him and Penny back to them?”

I suppose this is all part of a grand plan to defeat evil, but Merlin, I have no clue how any of this works. My friends keep gossiping about today’s occurrences and I move a chess piece that greatly limits John’s next move.

At moments like this I am glad I am just some guy, because I much rather would play chess with my friends than investigate creepy gates with my friends.

Months pass and the disappearance of Simon Snow and Penelope Bunce almost becomes old news. The Coven and the Mage are still searching, but it becomes a thing that lingers in the background. It’s kind of sad how people, like me, move on. Clearly, some people who were closer to them are more upset. I hear Rhys and Gareth talk about being worried during Magickal History.

Agatha Wellbelove also seems very upset by all of this. Since I am kind of obsessed with her, I did know that she’s friends with the both of them.

Interestingly enough, Baz Pitch is the other person who seems to be in a bad mood, or in an even worse mood than usual.

My suspicion is confirmed when Rhys arrives late to Greek one day.

“They’re back!” he yells as he barges through the door. He’s so erratic that he hits the wall with his wheelchair. “Simon and Penny… they’re back!”

Rhys babbles incoherently about how Simon Snow and Penelope Bunce just seemed to pop back into existence, both of them confused and disoriented, but seemingly unharmed. Class erupts into chaos since everyone needs to know the latest gossip.

Agatha retreats. She doesn’t ask permission to leave, but the Minotaur doesn’t stop her. He’s too busy trying to calm everyone down to even notice one student quietly slipping away. The only person who’s not in a state of chaos is Baz. He’s looks shocked, more like it. Even his minions are yapping excitedly, but he doesn’t seem to notice.

“I wonder what’s on his mind,” I say to John.

“Ah… well…” John doesn’t say more than that. Sometimes, John is as much as a mystery as Simon or Baz.

The class ends abruptly because the Minotaur cannot keep order. I sigh. I am not a big fan of Ancient Greek, but I was really hoping to pick something up, since we have a vocab test next week. I am definitely going to fail now.

I gather my books and follow the stream of students outside and I know I should be glad that Simon Snow and Penelope Bunce are safe and sound, but did they have to return during Greek of all classes? Why not next period during Elocution?

Goddamnit, Simon Snow.

I go to the leaving ceremony with John and Ryan. We don’t have to, since it’s a formality for last year students, but we all have time to kill.

Afterwards, my dad picks me up by himself. I don’t ask him where my mum is.

We drive home in silence and I send John a message, saying I miss him. This will be a long summer.

Some details explanations from Thomas’ replies on twitter:

- the sticky note on Roman’s room that says “WWLOJD” stands for “What Would Leslie Odom Jr. Do?”

- on Logan’s bedside table there’s a figure of the 10th doctor, a Gravity Falls Journal, a TARDIS that was “obscured by the plushies” and a blue smart lamp.

SANDERS SIDES SPOILERS AHEAD, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Hey yeah I'm overanalyzing their rooms now that we cANONICALLY KNOW WHAT EACH OF THEIR ROOMS LOOKS LIKE????? (if i miss anything while combing through these picture lmk!)

First up, Patton's room!

Lots of plushies! Lovely touch, not that surprised cuz it's, you know, Patton.

Cat statue! (lamp? I can't tell jdjsjsj)

And a cat poster right above his head!

I can't tell what picture that is on his desk :(

But I can tell that his glasses are on there, as well as a plate of two cookies (love that callback) and... A bible. Specifically the Bible Patton swore his oath on in SvS. Interesting touch...

And lastly, the card Virgil gave him during 12DOC (which I find interesting because, to me at least, this symbolizes that Patton still views Virgil as or believes Virgil to still be his best friend which is, uh... Not quite the case right now).

Also notably, Patton doesn't wear his onesie to sleep here?

Alright, next up is Roman!

Right off the bat, THAT IS A FACE MASK PEOPLE, ROMAN CANONICALLY HAS A SKINCARE ROUTINE ‼️

Next, his katana right next to his bed which I imagine he uses fairly often because if you'll look in the bottom left hand corner, you can see Remus stealing one of Roman's crocheted (knitted?) stars off of his desk

After that is his poster, which says Adventure Is Out There (maybe an Up poster? I can't find the exact one but knowing Roman it's probably that)

And speaking of Disney, I just noticed that he's sleeping in his Beauty and the Beast onesie oh my gosh

I love the amount of Roman toys he has in his room idjshshs

I can't tell what that bottle is right behind the Roman Youtooz, if anyone can, can you let me know?

Alright, Virgil's room now!!

It is. So dark. I had to turn my phone's brightness up to max to even be able to see half of it ksjsjsjsj

First off, Virgil wears a Green Day shirt and Thomas's black jacket to sleep! (If you don't remember, this is the same jacket Thomas wore during parts 1 and 2 of Accepting Anxiety and in Working Through Intrusive Thoughts!)

If you'll look right behind Virgil, there's a laptop open to... A YouTube lyric video. Dude listens to emo music without headphones to go to sleep, oh my God /pos

Now to the darker parts of the room:

He has a whiteboard that says "[Number (it's actually a pound sign but i don't want this to end up as a hashtag jdjsjsj)] of days since last total disaster", with 5 being the number of days. Does this mean that this video takes place five days after WTIT, or is it just an insignificant number?

I literally can't tell what all is on Virgil's desk so if anyone does please let me know, but what I can tell is that he's got an expo marker (for the whiteboard) and (presumably) melatonin, which (alongside the tossing and turning) I imagine confirms that Virgil has trouble sleeping

[EDIT FOR ABOVE: He also has a spider plush, a book of Grimm's Fairytale, fake candles(?) and Patton's card pinned underneath it! That's fascinating to me and I've taken it to mean that Virgil doesn't want to complete throw away his friendship with Patton but he's nowhere near "buddy buddy" with him anymore]
