No Such Thing As Filler

Okay, so yes, this is another post based on something I saw that irritated me, but it seems like this idea keeps coming up, so I need y'all to internalize this. There is no such thing as filler in good writing. None. Do not approach your work thinking you have to fill space in a story, I will beat you with this wiffle bat. Don't ask me where I got the wiffle bat. Don't even worry about it.

The idea of filler comes from a very particular place - when an anime or TV show has to fit in a certain number of episodes, but doesn't have enough content (hasn't caught up with the manga, the source material isn't long enough, etc) to cover those episodes. An episode has to be written, but the characters can't really progress, and so are given something else to do. Many a trope has come from these episodes, and they're sometimes necessary. Filler in this context is something that makes sense.

The dark side of filler is the idea that you need some space between Big Event 1 and Big Event 2 in your story, therefore you need throw anything in there to take up space and make your word count. This is a mistake I've made and I've seen plenty of other writers do it too, but it's a huge waste of your time. You do need something between those big action scenes, but you should always be writing to accomplish something.

Instead of thinking of that writing as filler, try to approach it with three things in mind:

Move Forward With Character Development and Backstory - Your characters barely survived a huge gunfight, and they won't encounter the big bad again for another few chapters. How do your characters decompress from that gunfight, and what does that say about them? Did a cocky character go in guns blazing, only to be deeply shaken by how a real fight works? Did that fight spark a moment of deep trauma for the main character that they have to reflect on afterwards?

Filling this space with meaningless scenes is a huge waste of opportunity. Think about how to dive deeper into your characters.

Move Forward With Plot and Subplot Development - The bad guy beat the heroes to the stolen gem, but they left behind a clue to why they want it. However that clue could reveal some painful truths about the protagonist's beloved great aunt... Carmen Sandiego???

A major goal following a big action scene is having the characters figure out what to do with what they've learned and what to do next. It's where romance subplots or secret relative subplots make progress, when truths are revealed and next steps are taken. You can absolutely do this in any setting - a flirty conversation while at the battling cages, a tense moment of feelings while hunting down a wayward chicken - but your main goal is making progress for both the characters and plot.

Move Forward With Worldbuilding - Worldbuilding has it challenges, believe me. You don't want to write a chapter on how an airship works only to have to cut it later. But you should still try to flesh out your world, and you should do so with the perspective of how to use that worldbuilding to your benefit. Maybe a critical scene hinges on the main characters knowing how that airship works, or that lake your main character often stares at is the setting of the big Act 3 Boat Battle. The weather can play into both perspective and emotions. Knowing what the main character's house and car looks like can reflect a lot on their personal character or backstory.

When you're struggling with a scene or a chapter, rather than writing filler, take a few steps back and think. What can you establish with your worldbuilding? What can you reveal about your characters through their dialogue and actions? What subplot could you explore or add in these between moments?

Filler from a fandom perspective - Now let me make this clear - if you're writing a fanfic just to have a cute moment between the characters you like, or you really want to force everyone to do that weird Twilight baseball scene, that's fine. You don't need a grand goal to achieve for every story, there's no need to justify your fanwork in any way other than you wanted to do it.

But I'd also argue fanwork doesn't fall under the filler label either - something you create, be it a character snapshot or a 'what if the gang meets Slenderman' parody, isn't taking up meaningless space. It's something fun you did that you and others enjoy, and there's nothing wasteful or pointless about that.

"It's exciting for tennis." Yeah it is. But now you're just trying to distract from how completely smitten you came across here.

You don't have to watch sci-fi shows to learn to like their actors. William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, Diana Muldaur, Robert Picardo, George Takei, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Brent Spiner, etc. I have never watched star trek or stargate or any of those other shows, but i've heard all of these actors in other projects. I can appreciate all of them. And shockingly, a large number of them have done comic book acting. Brent Spiner alone has been Joker and Riddler. Robert Picardo was Two Face and Amazo. William Shatner was also Two Face. Patrick Stewart was Professor X. Lot of comics or cartoons or video games in these people's careers.

I've kind of wanted to make this post for a while, since i heard nichelle nichols in one episode of batman the animated series. That was when I began finding all these coincidences, and I found it really funny. The amount of sci-fi actors doing cartoons and animation or comic movies or whatever seems shockingly common. It's kind of interesting, in a light way.

end of the semester absolutely fucking shot my brain cells so uhhh have the opening bit for a pvparkciv crossover thingy i made for my au! this was 100% inspired by this post. i also used @/ashmellow78's version of parkour language (which you can translate using this).

just like the other thing i wrote for this concept, this is second person but it's not a reader insert! pov character is parkciv!evbo. short and easy explanation of the au is pkbo rose quartz-ed himself to make pevbo. this au of the au is just a what-if of pevbo being sent into the past.

Usually when Crown calls for you, he doesn’t say your name. He doesn’t speak in general. You’ve been married so long words aren’t needed. He can just think or feel and you’ll come running.

So when he says “Evbo” in a voice that brook no argument, you immediately arrive at his side.

And you immediately see the problem.

There’s another you sitting on the block in front of you. He’s looking up at you both with wide eyes, curious and wary. There’s a sword strapped to his hip that’s hanging on the edge.

“Uh… hi?”

“Evbo,” Crown says again. You both look at him, but he only has eyes for you. Which would make you happy on a normal day. Clearly, today is not normal.

“Did you have an immaculate conception?”

“What? No! I think I would remember if I was pregnant.”

Crown looks at you funny, but ultimately drops the matter. Still, the thought’s been planted. The seed is sprouting.

Could you have made another you without knowing? It’s possible. Even after all these years, sometimes you do things without realizing it. The Bee Incident still gives several parkour citizens nightmares.

So you reach out. The other you feels familiar, overwhelming familiar. Like meeting someone you forgot existed. There’s a weird layer to his soul, shimmering like water reflecting the sun.

And right beneath it is

In any case, that’s something to dwell on later. As it stands, there’s a stranger on the outskirts of your civilization that needs addressing. So you look at him, and you make sure to put on the air of comfort and safety.

“Are you okay?”

Your (copy’s? imposter’s?) soul reacts immediately. It reaches out, clamoring for… what, exactly? It’s so loud you can hardly make heads or tails of it.

The other you doesn’t seem aware of this, instead perking up at being addressed. “I’m okay,” he answers, and wow. He doesn’t look that much younger than you were when you first started on your parkour journey. Did you really sound that young?

Oh, you’re getting old.

“Some passersby told me they found you passed out,” Crown explains, once again addressing you. “When I got here he was awake. He didn’t recognize me, so I called you.”

“Aw, you were worried about little old me?”

“It’d be incredibly concerning if my god was dead, yes.”

Other you (damn this kid needs a name) gasps at that. “Wait, you’re a god?!” There are stars in his eyes. It’s weird seeing that expression on a face so similar.

“That’s so cool! What are you the god of? Wait, wait.” He cuts you off before you can even think to answer. Other you shakes his hands, looking around.

“Gotta focus on the important stuff, Evbo,” he mutters to himself. “So, um, where am I? And who are you?”

“You’re in Parkour Civilization,” you answer. You see something click in his brain, but it’s not because he recognizes the name. “You might’ve guessed it already, but I’m Evbo. Also the Parkour God.”

You place a hand on Crown’s shoulder, pulling him as close as you can be while standing on different blocks. “And this is my husband Crown.”

“You guys don’t have swords?”

Crown answers this time. “We have them, but they’re purely ornamental. Why?”

“Because they’re your life?” He almost pulls out his sword, hand stopping midway. “That’s how it works in PVP Civilization. Are your lives not tied to parkour?”

You share a look with Crown. Totally not a concerning line of questioning.

“Kind of, but that was a long time ago.” You reach out, offering other you a hand. He takes it, almost stumbling off the block as he stands.

It’s going to suck so bad if he can’t do one-block jumps. No maybe secret asexually produced child of yours is going to suck at parkour. You can almost hear Seawatt laughing at you from beyond the server.

“That’s weird. But I guess it makes sense. Not every place can be PVP Civilization. Pretty sure that’s the only place I’ve been, though, so who knows.”

“Evbo,” Crown starts. “Your name is Evbo, right?”

“Yep!”

“We should get you to a doctor. Regardless of why, you were passed out for who knows how long.”

Other you shrugs. “Like, an hour maybe? I’ve gotten good at counting time while I’m sleeping.” There’s a pause. “Besides, I can’t go to a doctor! I have to get back!”

“Hey, buddy.” Attention successfully redirected. “I’m you, right? Take it from me: you’re gonna feel a lot better if you go. And then we promise to help you find your way back.”

He thinks about it for a good seven seconds before brightening up. “Alright! Lead the way!”

It... was a mistake. On my part. Didn't count things right but went with it anyway because I hate having to add or modify things to an already too complicated and well built story, lmao. So I built around it.

For Abby and Hoagie... it was not planned, a bit of a shock because they thought they were safe... Hoagie did his best and took care of the baby to allow Abby to finish her studies. They got married a year before the Nightmare War.

In Wally and Kuki's case, it was the first lucky shot, it just... happened. And they went with it despite disapproval from families. They had a whole plan ready to go: jobs, house, a possible marriage in the future... and decommission.

Then Wally disappeared.

They have a strong grip and are capable of physical attacks, but that is not their intended use.

「INFINITESIMAL」 has a signature ability referred to as "transference". Should its talons pierce both the user and another individual, the user can transfer "something of theirs" to the individual. The exact parameters of what constitutes as such are unclear, but some examples of what can be transferred include: physical sensations, emotions, and souls. It is possible for the user to "retrieve" things that have been transferred if a subject is pierced again.
