A Relief-Print Feathursday
A woodcut, wood engraving, and several linocuts by Spokane, Washington printer and printmaker W. Gale Mueller (1927-2018) from his Forty Years of Birds 'n Blocks, printed from the original blocks at his Millstone Press in 2009 in an edition of 53 copies. From 1969 to 2009, Mueller and his wife Bonnie sent holiday cards with Gale's original bird prints using several relief print processes. Today we show a few prints from the early years, along with the title page featuring a 2005 wood engraving, a technique Mueller came to prefer after 1986.
Our copy of this book is a gift from our friend Tony Drehfal.
Happy Feathursday!

One more piece of work! A linocut stamp, and embroidered blanket for @thedeafprophet of the Royal Beth logo that @the-insouciant-scientist and I designed together!!!
Some details about the logo: The 'T' is hidden in the middle. The 'R' is a reflection of the 'B'.
The edging is meant to symbolize a decorative mirror frame, showing the connections with the Beth and dreams. The wiggles are reminiscentof snakes. Additionally, the overall design resembles a keyhole!

Exist Without Approval. Linocut print.
A reminder. While the attempt to erase the recognition of trans people legislatively and linguistically is absolutely one of the steps to set the groundwork of genocide, and we must be vigilant to that fact, it's important to remember: no executive order or legislation can erase us. Trans people have existed for centuries, millennia, far longer than any of these small-minded men, longer than the country itself. We will not be erased. They can’t take our knowledge of ourselves from us. With or without their approval, we will grow and thrive, whether from gardens or sidewalk cracks. They can stop us just as well as they can capture every wisp of a dandelion seed from the sky, which is to say: they can’t.

Tichy Gyula (1879-1920), 'Diana es Akteon', 1912 "Acteon (Actaeon), the Theban prince, spies on Artemis bathing naked, so the angry goddess turns him into a deer out of revenge, and Acteon is finally torn apart by his hunting dogs because they do not recognize their owner." (Source)

Decorative Sunday
English designer Marthe Armitage (b. 1930) made a successful career of designing and manufacturing decorative wallpaper originally from handmade linocuts. Her designs have been featured in exhibitions, films, and documentaries. After studying at the Chelsea School of Art, Armitage began designing and hand printing linocut wallpaper designs in the 1950s. Her techniques moved to lithography, offset, and finally after 2018 to digital processes. The images shown her, including three original linocuts, are from her article "Patterns from Lino" in Matrix 11, Winter 1991, pp. 81-89, in which Armitage discusses her practice, evolutions in her methods, and her homage to William Morris. Today she is represented by the wallpaper design company Hamilton Weston. Armitage is a member and a former Master of the venerable Art Workers' Guild, which had its origins in the late 19th-century Arts and Crafts Movement.

These images of Marthe Armitage designs were snagged randomly from the Interwebs.
Matrix, printed at John and Rosalind Randle’s Whittington Press in Risbury, Herefordshire, England, is a donation from our late friend Jerry Buff.
