HOT 100 HCs: Emily Prentiss

Friends. Colleagues. I am starting a new thing (but not ending any old things, don't worry babes). I'm calling it HOT 100 Headcanons. Basically, I've created playlists for characters that include all the songs that they love and/or have shaped them in some way. I take cues from the canon characters (for example, canon Emily was a rocker in high school, so her playlist includes quite a bit of rock).

I don't know if anyone else will enjoy this or care about it and, frankly, I don't care. I really enjoyed making it, and I really do believe it's doing deep dives like this that help you really get to know a character (or your HC of them, anyway). Enjoy, if you're into that kind of thing!

HOT 100 HCs: Emily Prentiss

Note(s): When I think of the Criminal Minds characters, I always think of them as being Elite Team-age in the present. If Paget Brewster’s age roughly equals Emily’s, then Emily joined the BAU when she was 36/37. If we move the Elite Team timeline up so it starts in 2024, she’d have been born in 1987. That’s the date I work from when calculating these Hot 100 Lists.

Emily’s grandfather didn’t have tapes or CDs at his chalet in the French Alps, but he did have a turntable, and Nat King Cole was one of his favorites to spin. Now it always reminds Emily of him. She still likes to spin Nat King Cole and dance with you in the living room.

2. Édith Piaf, “Milord” (May 8, 1949) (N/A)

Another record straight from her grandfather’s house. They listened to a lot of Édith Piaf, but this was her favorite as a little girl. She thought it was funny, and it helped her learn how to do uvular trills, since French wasn’t her first language.

Little Emily didn’t get to go to Paris much, mostly just as a stopover on the way to her grandfather’s. But whenever her grandfather brought her back to her mom, he’d take her around Paris for a day, and she always thought it was the most magical place in the world.

4. Georges Brassens, “Je Me Suis Fait Tout Petit” (February 2, 1956) (N/A)

Her grandfather played classical-style guitar and loved the work of Georges Brassens. He often played it and sang for Emily. Georges Brassens was a significantly better singer than her grandfather was, but sometimes Emily wishes she had a recording of her grandfather instead of Brassens. Nevertheless, listening to it still reminds her of sitting with him on the hillsides while he played.

Another favorite of Emily’s grandfather. He was a star of French chanson, a folk music tradition driven heavily by lyrics, almost like poetry put to music. Her grandfather would sometimes read her the poems first and then play her the songs afterward.

One of Emily’s first favorite rock songs. She heard this version long before she even knew who Mick Jagger was and, to this day, she could defend in a dissertation-length essay why Marie Laforêt’s lyrics are better than the original.

A dancing-in-the-living-room standby for Emily at her grandfather’s.

Emily didn’t discover this one until she lived in Italy, but it’s a perfect sad song, great for dramatically belting in your room or in the car. Which is exactly what she did for months after the asshole of a boy who knocked her up dropped her and she had to go through the abortion process almost alone.

One of the “newest” records her grandfather owned. He only conceded to buying it because Maxime Le Forestier covered so much of Georges Brassens’ work. He ended up loving it. Emily’s first instinct is still to pronounce “San Francisco” like Le Forestier does in this song.

Inexplicably, Meat Loaf is one of the only English-speaking artists that Emily’s grandfather liked.

Her grandfather hated this song so much, but she loved it, so he bought it for her anyway. Teeny baby Emily could not get enough of the word “banana,” in any language.

Tiny little Emily heard this in a café in Paris with her mom and begged her mom to buy it on vinyl so she could bring it to her grandfather’s. Her mom obliged, mostly to shut her up, and Emily spent all summer listening to it. It was the first song that ever gave her chills. She still knows every word, still loves to belt it in the car, and still swears up and down that Lara Fabian’s version is better than Celine Dion’s.

Tu la reconnaîtras parce qu’elle a toujours un livre à lire dans son sac. Elle regarde avec admiration les livres rangés sur les étagères des librairies, s’émeut discrètement quand elle a trouvé le livre qu’elle cherchait.

Tu vois cette fille bizarre qui respire les pages des vieux livres dans les librairies d’occasion ? C’est elle, la lectrice.

Elle parlera comme si les personnages du livre existaient vraiment, parce qu’ils existent toujours, l’espace d’un instant. Tu la demanderas en mariage dans une montgolfière. Ou à un concert de rock. Ou l’air de rien, la prochaine fois qu’elle sera malade. Par Skype. Tu souriras tellement que tu te demanderas pourquoi ton cœur n’a pas encore éclaté dans ta poitrine. Tu écriras l’histoire de vos vies, vous aurez des enfants avec des noms étranges et des goûts encore plus étranges. Elle fera découvrir le Chat Potté et Aslan à vos enfants, peut-être même les deux dans la même journée. Vous passerez l’hiver de votre vie en vous promenant ensemble, et elle récitera doucement Keats pendant que tu feras tomber la neige de tes bottes. Fréquente une fille qui lit, parce que tu le mérites.

Je ne sais pas pourquoi mes fics Star Wars s'écrivent autant avec des flashbacks, ce n'est pas un truc dont j'ai l'habitude, mais avec ce fandom ça vient naturellement.

Le début du projet Springbreak, aka la romance-qui-aurait-dû-être-épistolaire, aka la fic où Anakin vit une chanson de Fall Out Boy écrite en 2008 et Obi-Wan une ballade d'été mélancolique :

Deux ans après la fin de la guerre, le Haut Conseil perdit la tête et décréta que tous les chevaliers Jedi ayant été adoubés après le début du conflit devraient effectuer l'année de missions en toute indépendance dont ils avaient été privés. Les talents acquis durant la guerre avaient été, eh bien, guerriers, et il était temps de se remémorer l'origine de leur Mission, qui était pacifiste, et de nombreuses planètes avaient besoin de l'intervention d'ambassadeurs neutres.

Anakin trouva cette décision raisonnable, jusqu'à ce qu'il réalise qu'il était également concerné.

-- C'est une blague ? demanda-t-il à Obi-Wan lorsqu'il reçut son premier ordre, une mission pour bébé Jedi dont le nez produirait encore du lait si on appuyait dessus. Je pourrais effectuer cette mission les mains attachées dans le dos et un bâillon sur la bouche.

— Parfait, répondit Obi-Wan avec un sourcil haussé. Elle n'en sera réglée que plus vite. Anakin, dit-il plus fort lorsque ce dernier allait insister. Toi plus que n'importe quel autre chevalier mérite cette année de liberté. Tu es l'un des très, très rares à avoir passé la guerre au côté de ton maître plutôt que d'avoir été déployé ailleurs.

Il lui sourit avec une excuse dans le regard.

— Ça te fera beaucoup de bien de pouvoir agir sans que je sois toujours sur ton dos.

Oh non, songea Anakin en réalisant soudain ce que cette histoire ridicule signifiait vraiment.

On voulait le séparer d’Obi-Wan.

Anakin savait, objectivement, que le Conseil n'aurait pas créé un décret influençant plus de mille cinq cents Jedi juste pour le séparer d'Obi-Wan. Il n'était pas égocentrique à ce point. Et ayant comparé sa mission à celle de plusieurs de ses compagnons de galère, il savait qu'il n'était pas le seul à être traité comme s'il sortait tout juste de la Crèche.

Mais. Il était Anakin Skywalker. Le Héros Sans Peur. Le pourfendeur de Dark Tyranus et Dark Sidious.

C'était complètement ridicule !

Aussi, après quelque jours à râler sombrement avec d'autres vétérans infantilisés, il demanda à voir le Conseil qui le reçut avec une rapidité louche. Clairement, ils s'étaient attendu à ce qu'il proteste.

Mais ils ne s'étaient certainement pas attendus à ce qu'il allait leur sortir.

Tout le monde, tout le monde oubliait qu'il avait été formé par Obi-Wan. Même Obi-Wan.

— Dans sa grande sagesse...

Même pas une pointe de sarcasme dans sa voix, il espérait vraiment qu'Obi-Wan était fier.

-- ...Le Conseil a décidé que les Jedi ayant été privés d'une année de missions en toute indépendance devraient l'effectuer, à dater du premier du mois prochain. Toutefois...

S'ils croyaient qu'il ne voyait pas leur sourire en coin...

— Ils ne sont pas les seuls à avoir été privé de cette expérience nécessaire à tout Jedi. Le chevalier Koestar, la chevalière An'ki, Maître Ost...

Il continua la liste des quatorze noms qu'il avait dénichés dans la base de données de l'Ordre après trois nuits blanches et une quantité de caf à en empoisonner un wookie. Et enfin...

— La chevalière Aïmetyo et... Maître Kenobi.

Et il le savait mieux que personne, il en était la raison. Obi-Wan l'avait pris comme padawan immédiatement et n'était jamais passé par cette étape initiatique.

-- Anakin, soupira l’interpellé en se pinçant le nez.

Le reste du Conseil le regardait avec une stupéfaction non dissimulée. Il les avait coincés, et ils le savaient. S'il y avait non pas un, mais plusieurs précédents, il n'y avait pas de raison qu'il ne puisse y avoir d'autres exceptions. Et Anakin avait toutes ses chances d'en être une.

— Une excellente remarque, déclara Maître Yoda à la surprise générale, y compris celle d'Anakin.

Il ne s'était pas attendu à ce que le Grand Maître soit le premier à céder, et si vite.

— En délibérer, le Conseil doit. À Maître Windu, la liste, remets.

Dérouté, Anakin s'exécuta, soutenant le regard exaspéré du Maître de l'Ordre.

Il sortit de la salle du Conseil avec un léger sentiment de malaise, le mit sur le compte de l'irritation d'Obi-Wan et se promit de l'inviter à dîner pour se faire pardonner, même s’il n'aurait pas dû en avoir besoin.

Il avait fait ça pour leur bien.

— Ce n'était pas du tout ce que je voulais, dit-il, horrifié, quelques heures plus tard.

Obi-Wan, avec un stoïcisme né de ses nombreuses années d'expérience, venait de lui montrer un ordre de mission qui faisait passer celle d'Anakin pour une tâche ardue.

Servir de témoin à l'inauguration du nouveau parc naturel maritime dédié à la paix de Champala ? On le prenait pour un padawan ?

— Ils ont complètement perdu la tête, ils ne peuvent pas se passer de toi en tant que conseiller, c'est n'importe...

— Oh, je ne quitte pas pour autant mon poste, répondit calmement Obi-Wan. Au contraire, je sers d'exemple aux autres Jedi, afin de prouver que le Conseil est juste. Merci, Anakin. Sincèrement.

— Obi-Wan...

— Sur ce, je vais te laisser.

— Où est ce que tu vas ?

— Quinlan et Luminara ont une bouteille de Danse-de-Feu antakarien qui porte mon nom. À demain.

Anakin faillit le rappeler, mais choisit sagement de le laisser partir.

Last movie: Pitch Perfect 2 - I was on a small summer vacation with friends and as we were listening to the soundtrack we decided not to play our Pen & Paper games, but watch the Pitch Perfect Franchise instead in the evenings. Well, we ditched the last one, because it is not good, but it was fun watching the first two with friends.

Il y a souvent des petits machins dans les chansons que je ne comprends pas mais que j'ignore parce que je sais globalement ce que l'auteur voulait dire.

Tout de même, je me disais que je devrais élargir mes connaissances et arrêter d'éviter ces angles morts. Sans doute, je vais apprendre moult expressions très utiles.

Une liste non exhaustive :

Change de pote - Casseurs Flowters "...le gars c'est qu'une longueur" Qu'est-ce que ça veut dire une longueur, là ? Le site Genius montre la photo de Pinocchio, alors on entend par ça qu'il a le nez long, qu'il ment ?

Rêves bizarres - Orelsan, Damso "...oublie l'eau" Là encore, Genius suggère une explication mais j'avoue que je ne la comprends pas trop. Si quelqu'un voulait bien me le reexpliquer...

expect the unexpected; sometimes, it's going to be just what you needed.

this weekend I said welcome home to this little ragamuffin; a surprise [& early anniversary gift] from my partner. he's been keeping me on my toes, but life's been a little less lonely these days. my 3 month review at this new company went over well, & also came with a crazy promotion. hard work really does pay off, & it's nice to be working somewhere where my work does not go unnoticed.

the reason why I say this promotion is crazy, is because it's completely unrelated to my degree. I had been given various projects over the last few months – predominantly to do with bookkeeping & finances – that have resulted in me being selected to be the new company accountant. this work is not unfamiliar with me since it's something I do for my own small business, but to be doing this on a corporate level is humbling. it reminds me of a conversation I once had with my department head right before graduation. they were the person who I went to with many of my tearful vents and frustrations, & during this particular conversation they told me "do what you need to, but do more of what you're good at. that's how you bring the right things to your table." I held on to that for years. right now, I wish I could tell them thank you.

ce week-end, j'ai souhaité la bienvenue à ce petit ragoût, une surprise [et un cadeau d'anniversaire anticipé] de mon partenaire. il me tient en haleine, mais la vie est un peu moins solitaire ces jours-ci. mon évaluation de trois mois dans cette nouvelle entreprise s'est bien passée et s'est accompagnée d'une promotion folle. le travail acharné paie vraiment, et c'est agréable de travailler dans un endroit où mon travail ne passe pas inaperçu.

La raison pour laquelle je dis que cette promotion est folle, c'est qu'elle n'a aucun rapport avec mon diplôme. Au cours des derniers mois, on m'a confié divers projets - principalement liés à la comptabilité et aux finances - qui m'ont valu d'être choisie pour être la nouvelle comptable de l'entreprise. Ce travail ne m'est pas inconnu, puisque je le fais pour ma propre petite entreprise, mais le faire au niveau de l'entreprise me rend humble. Cela me rappelle une conversation que j'ai eue un jour avec mon chef de service juste avant d'obtenir mon diplôme. c'est à lui que je m'adressais pour lui faire part de mes larmes et de mes frustrations, et au cours de cette conversation, il m'a dit : « Fais ce que tu dois faire, mais fais davantage ce pour quoi tu es douée. c'est ainsi que tu apporteras les bonnes choses à ta table ». J'ai gardé cela pendant des années. En ce moment, j'aimerais pouvoir leur dire merci.

where did the idea for utdm and the names for the clubs(maison de la lune and the duchess) come from? (just genuinely curious bout the former, and im askin bout the latter cuz i’ve coincidentally got a lackadaisy au(well, sorta, as it just takes place in the same universe considering it’s in another state, and the main story begins a year before canon lackadaisy does) where the resturant/speakeasy the mcs work in is called la chanson de la lune(“the song of the moon”, iirc). i didn’t even remember that you had something with a similar name already, so i found it kinda funny once i looked back at utdm lmao)

If you mean in-universe, it's because Flynn wants to be fancy and bougie, set himself apart from the more lowclass scrabbled together clubs. The Duchess is very high class and exclusive; the La Lune is more gaudy, Moulin Rouge-esque and doesn't have such a closed clientele list. "The Ladies of the La Lune" and the "Ladies of the Duchess/The Duchesses" is ⭐classy⭐, they arent common working girls. Flynn thinks about image and puts on airs, always. Dude probably cant even pronounce L'Maison or La Chanson

out of universe/meta wise I def wanted something relating to moons for the club the MC is staying in, and French names were very in vogue in the era, especially to evoke something more upper class, chic and feminine.

Je suis chez ma mère, on est passées dans mon lycée (elle y travaille) et ça m’a fait un choc, pourtant j’y suis allée plusieurs fois depuis mais là c’était particulier. Parce que c’est ptet la dernière fois, parce que j’ai perdu récemment des ami.es très proches que j’ai rencontrés à ce moment là. Toute une vague de souvenirs d’une ancienne vie, à laquelle je pense très peu, c’était il y a seulement 10 ans pourtant (1 seconde, ou 1 million d’années?). Je suis retombée sur un de mes premiers journaux intimes, c’est douloureux à lire tellement c’est dramatique et ridicule mais c’est aussi émouvant. J’adore la dernière page car tout le carnet est rempli de pensées tristes, colériques ou sombres, et ce jour là j’ai écrit que ça suffisait et j’ai fait une liste de belles choses qui m’attendaient dans la vie. Trop cool. Même si j’ai été déprimée mille fois après, c’est cette page qui a raison. Ce que j’aime encore plus c’est que je crois me souvenir très bien du moment précis où j’ai écrit ces lignes, de la chanson que j’écoutais et des quelques jours qui ont suivi ce moment.
