My tumblr friend cupcakes-and-lithium (no longer on this site, sadly) gave me this poison ring and other goodies as part of a trade several years ago. I love playing with it; it has a nice click-feeling when it closes. I usually wear it towards the inside of my palm, for easier clicking.

Shit thing about collecting rings is that many end up being size 8 and fitting my ring-fingers nicely. But my index and middle fingers are larger, so it limits what I can wear. And boy howdy, I used to love wearing multiple rings, back in my hey-day.

The devastation of nuclear colonialism, which permanently destroys Indigenous communities throughout the world, is outright ignored by some of the most devout climate justice advocates. They claim nuclear energy production is also a green solution to the climate crisis. More than 15,000 abandoned uranium mines are located within the so-called US, mostly in and around Indigenous communities, permanently poisoning sacred lands and waters with little to no action being taken to clean up their deadly toxic legacy. There are currently ninety-three operating nuclear reactors in the so-called US that supply 20% of the country’s electricity. There are 60,000 tons of highly radioactive spent nuclear waste stored in concrete dams at nuclear power plants throughout the country with the waste increasing at a rate of 2,000 tons per year. In 1987 the “US” Congress initiated a controversial project to transport and store almost all of the US’s toxic waste at Yucca Mountain located about 100 miles northwest of so-called Las Vegas, Nevada. Yucca Mountain has been held holy to the Paiute and Western Shoshone Nations since time immemorial. In January 2010 the Obama administration approved a $54 billion taxpayer loan in a guarantee program for new nuclear reactor construction, three times what Bush previously promised in 2005. In April 2022, the Biden administration announced a $6 billion government bailout to “rescue” nuclear power plants at risk of closing. A colonial government representative stated, “US nuclear power plants contribute more than half of our carbon-free electricity, and President Biden is committed to keeping these plants active to reach our clean energy goals.” They, along with Climate Justice activists cite nuclear energy as necessary to combat global warming, all while ignoring the devastating permanent impacts Indigenous Peoples have faced. There is nothing clean about energy produced from nuclear colonialism. From its weapons (including depleted uranium) to its mining and its waste; Indigenous bodies, lands, and waters continue to be sacrificed to heat water with radioactive materials which creates steam that moves generators to charge batteries made from lithium extracted from other Indigenous sacred lands so Teslas can move you forward into a “just” climate future. A green economy sustains and advances colonial progress, which means mitigated selective and ongoing destruction of Mother Earth.

I might be wrong, but I think this person might be gesturing at the problems with critical mineral supply chains. Batteries require cobalt and lithium, and various other rare earth minerals, and currently the mining of these minerals is an ongoing ethical horror.

These two things seem totally unrelated to me. Like, an equivalent question would be "is there any way to stop climate change without feeding babies into the Giant Baby Smashing Machine?" and I would say, yes? There absolutely is? Are we feeding babies into the giant baby smashing machine? If so we should stop that.

AIUI China has been making phenomenal strides building nuclear power and rolling out EVs, and the US has experienced a massive expansion of renewables thanks in large part to the Biden administration working to reduce capital costs. It's sort of both the best of times and the worst of times in the fight against climate change--but then, that is almost true by definition, since rising CO2 levels will mean rising global temperatures until the fight is actually won. IIRC China's emissions are expected to basically plateau in the near future and then begin declining after that? So that's a huge win right there.

The great thing about renewable tech is that once you develop efficient solar/wind and efficient battery storage (and we've made huge progress on the batteries thing in the last several years, apparently; grid-scale battery storage is quickly becoming a reality), you can export the tech to other countries. So if developed countries can decarbonize, I don't know why developing countries couldn't.

Oh no, synthetimancy is actually a disease. Its technically a form of cancer. The idea being that you infect part of your body with it, and you lose unconscious control of that body part, but gain conscious control of that body part.

When student moves her infested hand, she isn't doing it through muscle memory. She is consciously puppetting every single muscle fiber, consciously pumping blood into the hand, and consciously forcing cellular apoptosis.

Because she has conscious control over that portion of her infested cell structure, she can do things like consciously rearrange the sweat glands on her palm to produce milk, or kerosene, or lithium biphosphate.

If you wanted to become a synthetimancer, you just need someone with the disease to intentionally share it with you. But if you aren't trained for it, you rapidly just get leukemia and die. For most people, the risks outweigh the rewards, but Students culture has a long history of synthetimancy. Their hyperactive endocrine systems mean they are effectively impossible to poison, but their skin occasionally fits off in patches. Synthetimancy is extremely good for producing sterile skin grafts, so their culture has a long hisory with the art.

There are actually multiple different terms for different types of bodily modifications. Student is just a synthetimancer. If you were genetically modified, you're referred to as "tailored" if you were mechanically or synthetically modified, you're referred to as "augmented."

sorry if this question has been asked before, but do you know if potionology in twst is essentially just how we do chemistry but with more local / native magical materials added into the mix? ignoring how they use cauldrons

I'd say the two are similar, barring some exceptions (such as slightly different equipment, ingredients, preparation methods which involve magic, and the fact that high school students aren't allowed to make actual medicine, ie potions in Twst, irl).

Crewel is noted as overseeing the Science department and classes, which is where chemistry would fall in real life. A lot of the items you'd wear are basically personal protective equipment for the lab. And, in Vil's Labwear vignettes, Science Club's advisor (not explicitly stated to be Crewel) allows Rook to use the lab but "[required] a list of chemicals and formulas [they'd] be using, a detailed schedule, a fire prevention plan, and so on", all safety precautions a lab runner would have prepared in advance before loaning out space to students.

I don't know if I'd say that potionology is a true equivalent or a substitute for chemistry though...? It should be noted that chemistry exists in Twisted Wonderland as its own subject and is something that seems to be considered when potion brewing. It feels more like a component or basic knowledge you would need in order to make potions rather than potionology being "just chemistry, but magic".

Trey says in his Silk Adorned vignettes that, "They add certain metals to the fireworks mixture that burn in different colors. Barium makes yellow-green, lithium gets you red, and sodium produces yellow. Not many humans can use magic, so we turn to chemistry for stuff like this [...] I'm pretty sure you would've gone over flame tests in class... Anyway, the fireworks in the show will change colors based on the same principle as well." Note the elements from the periodic table and the mention of a lesson about flames in their science classes!l Chemistry must exist as its own subject for non-mages, and chemistry also exists as a basis of knowledge for mages to build upon for potionology, alchemy, etc.

In NRC’s Science Club, they indulge in non-magical sciences, not just magical ones, despite the extracurricular being for an arcane academy. For example, Trey states he researches cakes and baking/cooking processes while Rook has been shown to create explosives and write wildlife research papers in extended Twst content.

Just as frustrating is the number of posts from people whose backwater fucking shrinks refuse to prescribe them anything other than heavy duty antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, whose side effect burdens are notoriously high and often as miserable as the condition itself. The amount of misinformation surrounding lithium is criminal. Yes it's a drug that carries risks and requires close and attentive monitoring relative to the alternatives, but it's otherwise thoroughly studied, dirt cheap, and demonstrably safe when taken as directed. It doesn't promote insulin resistance, doesn't cause sedation or affective blunting, no akathisia or agitation, really the worst you're looking at is tremors (not universal) and increased thirst/urination. It's also the gold standard for the effective management of mood episodes! Beneficial even at sub-therapeutic doses! I'm convinced a lot of pdocs out there are terrified of liability and not up to date on the latest research. But I see so much hand-wringing over it and ooohhh my doctor told me it would give me kidney damage. Bro who is your doctor and why does he want to poison you???

i feel like 400% better than I did a few days ago and I'm not sure why. i think it's huge doses of magnesium, vitamin c, normal doses of lysine, single dose of 10mg lithium orotate, coffee which I rarely bother with otherwise, large doses of vitamin d, and doubling up prenatal multivitamins. i think it's possible I have long term, slowly-worsening malnutrition and hitting it with a bunch of crap all at once has managed to shotgun whatever was missing. not a sustainable treatment plan because eventually you will poison yourself, but as a quick fix it seems to have been effective

Just some personal updates

This year has been Something™ and mainly the reason why I haven't been doing art at all.

From a long-term relationship breakup to my old family dog's sudden passing, from a decades-long friendship ending to going through lithium poisoning, it felt like everything was happening constantly throughout the year from the word go, and I just lost the heart to draw.

But now I'm in a much better place now (feels like the best place actually!). Thanks to the breakup which kickstarted this year's events, I was able to do the things I never got to do before: I got to play D&D for real for the first time. I got back into ballet (even though my last ballet class was when I was 7 and I'm currently over 30 lol). I splurged money on two new tattoos, just 'cause!

And now, I want to draw again! From commissions to personal art to the comic submissions I asked for (I haven't forgotten), I just wanna get back into it again!!
