LUWAP2023, I got to do some art for JadeHawk0290′s fic; The Hour of Twilight

I loved legit everything abt the fic and I couldn’t narrow down exactly which one artwork I wanted to do.... so i did the entire first chapter loll

Okay, so I literally only go here every other day but I’m seeing something that’s really upsetting me about LU Wild and fanworks.

Let me tell you something, I’m not gonna be made to feel any type of way on how I personally portray Wild. Because even though LU Wild is wonderful and amazing and has a set personality in the comic, he is based on a Link that millions of people played in a different way. And how they played him is gonna reflect in their fanworks.

For instance, I played Wild as an extremely social and personable rouge with a wit that rivals Sarcastic Hawke from Dragon Age and a love for pampering and a hidden feral side. And I personally vibe more with that portrayal.

Someone else might have played him as untrusting, standoffish and rude. Some people played him as haunted by trauma. Some people played him as a pyromaniac lunatic with a love for streaking . And that’s how they portray him in their fanworks. Not my cup of tea but hey that’s why I create my own shit.

But for some reason a lot of people have an opinion on ‘the correct way’ Wild should be portrayed in fanfics and it’s irking me. Mind you, these are fanfics based off of a fancomic. A fancomic whose creator from what I understand has no issues with how people portray the characters.

I never thought I’d see gatekeeping in a fandom surrounding a fancomic but here we are I guess.

Maybe? idk I haven't actually been in the fanbase for that long (I think I found out about it just before the Shifting Shadows arc? so like early 2021 I think).

LU was one of the (if not the) first links meeting aus, the premise and plot are relatively simple and easy to put your own spin on. The character designs and concepts compared to canon aren't too outrageous or too simple and it's made extremely easy to apply your own ideas to an existing story.

Because everyone's ideas of the Links are so different, it's like there are many versions of the same character. (even more so I mean), and I personally don't think it's a bad thing.

Link as a character was always meant to be a blank slate for the player to project onto from his voice (or lack of) to his gender to his relationships. Everyone's interpretations of these characters are unique and that's what is so fun about it!

There are plenty of links meeting AUs out there with smaller fanbases if that's what you want lol, but LU is one of the longest-running and well-crafted ones so it's no wonder that people really imprinted on it.

I’m looking for a short LU fancomic I saw floating around a while ago and can’t find again. It was two or three pages, I think? It had Twilight and Time questioning why Wild wasn’t more careful with himself, and saying how it seemed he was trying to die, or something to that effect.

Then it showed Wild, slumped against the base of a tree, covered with blood and the flames from Mipha’s Grace still surrounding him, asking why he should be careful when he can’t die. And then Time and Twilight looked horrified.

list 3 positive things about your current fandom(s) Gonna do Linked Universe since it's the current fandom we share ^^ 1) I appreciate the amount of platonic friendship and familial bonding the fandom focuses on, I have nothing against shipping but it's a nice break 2) The theory crafting around commonalities and unique things for each of the boys is really fun to noodle with and read about 3) There are so many good fics and fancomics that are so creative and I love reading them, this goes for the Zelda fandom in general tbh

a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like! Hmm, that's difficult, I feel like a lot of the ones I don't like I've stayed against, maybe Ravioli as a ship? I never hated it, but didn't really get the vibe from the ALBW playthroughs I saw at first (I haven't played it due to lack of 3DS) only really came around to the ship due to how good the fan content is for it. 12.compliment someone else in your fandom Hmmm, gonna go with @sea-salt-lemon-sugar, Splatoon is my other video game faves atm and their crossover with LU is so so good, their art is so super cute even my partner who is not into LU has complimented it over my shoulder.

everybody and their dad has made a "what if all the zeldas and links were in one place" au. there is nothing wrong with yours and that anon is being really weird about it. i still am not sure why LU got so Popular compared to all the other ones but that doesn't give anybody a reason to go dunk on multilink aus that Aren't LU?? either way. hi i personally love your different zeldas so much and i hope you have a wonderful day.

awwww thank you so much, it makes me so happy to hear that you like my zeldas <3 and yeah idk why lu got so popular compared to other ones-- ive mentioned this before, but ive been in the fandom since i was like, 9. not just a fan but like actually in the fandom, cosplays (not halloween costumes, honest to go cosplay), fan art (posted to DA, of course, XD) fanfics (written in my fluffy early 2000s heart locket diary that i read out loud to the fellow campers at church camp) FAN SONGS AND AMVS the whole 9 yards. so i have seen thousands of links meet aus come and go, even before skyward sword came out. hell, i distinctly remember 'links meet spandex aus' (*shudders* if you dont know what the skyswd spandex au was, dont look it up, it's nasty) so i have no idea what makes lu so special. the art maybe? but jojo isnt the only links meet fan comic out there (like linked maze, linkverse, bonus links, all of which rock but i wont tag bc i doubt they want to be associated with fandom wank-- but you should def check them out!! especially linkverse, mina is a wonderful artist and so sweet) and certainly wasn't the first links meet fancomic. they were all the rage on DA once skyward sword established a lot of new lore, and you can still find them archived on there, and even before link meet fancomics became common, link meet aus were alllllll over fanfic.net. one common one that i have remember being insanely popular is the links watching each other play their games and remarking on them, a trope that was super common post skyswd release but has fallen out of fashion. jojo is a wonderful artist, with interesting and creative designs, but jojo isn't the end all be all, ya know?

idk, in the nicest way possible, lu is one version of a very common, very old trope that has been around since the fandom started, and it is no better (or worse!) than any other links meet, and its fandom has no reason to be as stuffy, overprotective, or self-absorbed as it unfortunately can be when at the end of the day, its comic is just one out of a million.

Basically in summary: some people had an issue with the vastly queer fanbase and queer content for LinkedUniverse (a Zelda fancomic, for my newer followers who might not know), and made a "Conservative and Christian LU server"

Needless to say, posting the link on Tumblr was maybe not the best decision for them.

Hi!! I saw ur fandom veteran post, and I was wondering if you think the fandom has expanded or shrunk since say, the bunny legend stuff for example? Like are there any notable changes you’ve witnessed over the years. No pressure to respond I was just curious since I’ve only been in it for a year or so haha

Well let’s see... my memory with dates and stuff isn’t the greatest but here’s what I do remember.

For a long while we were rather small. I pretty much knew who everyone was (this was before I had a tumblr of course, I just lurked and sent occasional anons) and there weren’t a ton of newcomers. There were about two incorrect quote blogs, and everybody pretty much knew everyone else. Chain meets wild fics were just starting to grow in popularity as I recall XD

Somewhere around divine dark reflections (and/or pandemic I think, somewhere in there) our number upticked pretty quick; we certainly didn’t get on trending or anything but there was a lot more fan content and blogs, and if you said ‘linkeduniverse’ to a zelda fan there was a fair chance they’d know what you were talking about.

So we were steadily growing, but not too ridiculously fast. Lu was still a small fandom, but considering it was for a fancomic we were pretty big.

But then I think right around last June when we had that month of weekly updates was when the fandom really exploded; suddenly we were on trending, we were number one on trending, everyone wanted to know what lu was (who the dog that died was hah) and we had tons of newcomers.

I’d say since then we just kept growing, going from small to at least medium sized, and we were no longer a teensy fancomic fandom, we’d gotten on trending. Compared to how the fandom used to be we were huge.

And of course, the bigger a fandom gets, the more problems it attracts.

There were a couple incidents, but the breaking point was the whole... everything, about you-know-what a month or two ago. It really shrunk us. A lot of people left, which is fine I totally get it, but we’re way smaller now.

I think we’re still bigger then we were back in the day. But we’re certainly much smaller then this time last year; I’d say maybe we’re about the same size of when bunny Legend was revealed or so (that’s a very vague estimate though)

And honestly I prefer it that way XD smaller fandoms tend to be nicer, more fun, and just better in general. Less mean anons anyway.

That being said of course, I do think we’re growing again. Not too fast. But we are. It’s just the nature of things, and linkeduniverse is just so good that some people are always going to be interested in it.
