I've finally caught up with Letters From Watson! Since the Mormon backstory part of the story is basically over, I just want to give some brief and random thoughts about it.
I honestly found myself enjoying it. Obviously I would have preferred more Holmes and Watson, but compared to the boredom I felt when I first read it I was much more interested this time. Ferrier and Lucy being forced to assimilate into Mormon culture or be left to die in the wilderness was bleak, and I enjoyed the symmetry of Ferrier ultimately dying in the wilderness regardless, with the Mormons being the decider of his fate once more. You could also say that was where Lucy symbolically died as well, since that's where her depression from the forced marriage started.
One of the moments I really liked though was at the start when Ferrier told child Lucy that her mother was dead. She goes from this reaction:
“Then mother's a deader too,” cried the little girl dropping her face in her pinafore and sobbing bitterly.
To this one after being told they're on the brink of death:
“Why didn't you say so before?” she said, laughing gleefully. “You gave me such a fright. Why, of course, now as long as we die we'll be with mother again.”
The idea of heaven basically stops Lucy from grieving her mother, and her own death isn't scary to her either cause it just means seeing her again. I'm not religious so I don't have much else to say about it, but it did jump out to me and I found it interesting.
As for later, I didn't find myself particularly invested in the romance between Jefferson Hope and Lucy. It was certainly better than the Mormons, but it just felt like another escape from a terrible situation. First it was the Mormons saving them from nature, now it's Jefferson Hope saving them from Mormons. I think that's where my emotional investment was at, not the romantic aspect but their efforts to escape. I did think it was neat that Lucy, despite growing up with the Mormons, never actually bought into their beliefs, presumably because Ferrier taught her otherwise.
As to the ninja Mormon stuff, I felt it was a bit too absurd. The idea of Mormons sneaking onto Ferrier's property in the middle of the night to burn a number somewhere every day for a month was too odd to be scary. I kept asking myself logistical questions. Like did they decide where to burn the number beforehand, or did they do it on the spot randomly? What did they wear? Did they have Mormon stealth clothing so they weren't caught? Was it the same person each night, or was it different every time? Or was it one person per week and they did it on rotation or something? "Hey Michael, it's your turn to tiptoe onto Ferrier's property this week. Oh, and make sure not to burn it on the dinner table, Jim did that two nights ago."
Let's see. Drebber and Stangerson were brief but terrible people and I'm glad Jefferson Hope got them in the end. I'm also glad there was no attempt at showing their desire to marry Lucy as anything but greed and selfishness. They wanted Lucy because Ferrier was rich, simple and terrible as that. Ironically, Ferrier and Lucy might have survived if he weren't so prosperous.
Jefferson Hope's vengeance was okay. Another post talked about how unrealistic it would be for him to be able to follow Drebber and Stangerson across Europe, but I bought into his desire for revenge enough that I didn't mind. Certainly there were a few moments of luck/coincidence, but whatever, he got lucky.
Overall, I had a good time. I would still gladly trade all of this out for more Holmes and Watson, or at least have a more thematic connection between the two segments. Nonetheless, it's fine. It's okay.

OCs
Dia - full name: Seprigrininat-un-Diadelixaphage. Greymoral homunculus with an empathy disorder, raised as an assassin by her father, whom she killed for abusing her sister. She and her siblings are in hiding from the crime empire who owns their father’s debts, and Dia is trying to find both her purpose and her brother, who was captured by said crime empire. She was a pirate for a year, wears a skull bandana and uses a scythe and weather magic.
(art by my friend’s friend Park who does not have tumblr)
Tumblr media
Farris - a gaunt woman who sold her soul to an undead fae in order to escape abuse, and is now hunting that fae to kill her so she can die freely on her own terms. Dia’s rival and eventual lover. She lashes out as a defense mechanism. Manipulates her own body into a weapon with the magic of the undead.
Tumblr media
Max Enoch - a teenage Jewish trans girl with a golem made of folded paper, a crush on her best friend Jenny, and severely repressed trauma. Tries really hard to be an aloof cool girl at the cost of her vulnerability.
(art by @lilyhoshikawa )
Tumblr media
Primrose - goes by Prim. The poltergeist of the girl haunting this narrative. She’s insanely powerful and insanely vindictive, an apparent human living in a mirror world of twisted deities, whom she both culls and protects. Daughter of the Dreamer - the invisible “Idmon.”
Tumblr media
Puck - a little boy with antlers, a scar over one eye and whimsical theater kid energy. He is just a little guy. Prim’s baby brother, son of the Dreamer - the invisible “Titania.”
(art by @cattownartist )
Tumblr media
Lucy “Twitch” Blum - newly out trans girl still dealing with a whole lot of trauma. Almost killed the party when her self-loathing took monstrous form, but she got better. Accompanied by her Persona, Venus. In a very lovey-dovey relationship with resident butch Lena.
Tumblr media
Arcade Cassidy - bartender and butch eyecandy by night, nerdy terminal insomniac by day. Horribly cursed, and dealing with it the best they can - by being buried in medical debt, mostly. Probably going to eat a g-d some day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mezzanine “Mezz” Penglihaten - mixed Indonesian and Japanese, she’s chronically ill chemistry major and part time magical girl, by the name “Transience.” The providor of her powers takes the specter form and name of “Izanami.” While Mezz is firm and softspoken, Transience is cocky and brash and loud. Full profile here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keth Sayar - up and coming punk rock star, shredding her way through the undercity of Zaun...or so she likes to say. Despite her insistence on her stage name - Caustic Shock - she’s as of yet an inexperienced band geek running around with a haunted electric guitar, getting into trouble. And she’s 15. But it’s not a phase, mom!

It's been two months and five days since I've started Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Today, I finished the very last episode. (I know I'm making this more dramatic than it is, but idc)
So, it's been a lot. So many good, great things, but also a lot of weird, disturbing things. Characters I loved all the way through (Hunter, Piper, Davis, Sousa, every Koenig (I think)); Characters I almost loved all the way through, except for a few episodes where they made some choices I didn't agree with or so (Fitz, Simmons, Bobbi, Coulson, Daisy, May, Deke, Enoch); Characters about whom I wouldn't say I loved them but I still liked them very much (Mack, YoYo, Trip, Mace, Flint); Characters who weren't exactly the good guys but still were somewhat likable to some extent (Ward, Radcliffe, Cal, Gordon, Jiaying, Sunil Bakshi, Robbie, Kora), and of course Characters who were written to be hated (The Malicks, Garrett, Whitehall, Lucy Bauer, Ellen Nadeer, Ivanov, Kassius, the Hales, Izel, Sybil) and everyone who I don't know in which category to put, or what to name their category.
I am so glad, that the phase in season five where I couldn't stand Daisy, was over as soon as season six started. I was surprised by how MUCH I loved her in season seven.
Season six was definitely my least favorite (and of what I've read I'm not the only one with that opinion). But I can't say it enough, how much I loved the parts in space of Piper, Davis, Daisy, and Jemma (and later only Daisy and Jemma) searching for Fitz and Enoch. I can't think of one single moment right now from that space part, that I didn't like. But I really hated Izel and this whole shrike thing, and Sarge and his team, so I was really glad when season seven started.
Because season seven started off just absolutely great! I already said that I loved their clothes. Sending Jemma in as Peggy Carter in the 50s was perfection. Daisy saying she already has a sister to save, her name is Jemma Simmons. May falling through the ceiling, punching Sybil and saying "The Cavalry". Fitzsimmons naming their daughter after a star. Piper's wish from Jemma being getting Davis back. The team meeting up (at least) once a year to catch up and not losing each other. All of that is perfection.
There is so much more I want to write about, but first, I can't put everything into words (right now), and second, this post would be way too long.
I am so glad that I started Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I'm even more glad that I continued watching even though the first five episodes or so didn't convince me at all, and at first I only stayed because of the characters.
I am thankful for everyone involved, but especially those who decided that these wonderful actors would get the role they got, because honestly? I couldn't have asked for a cast that was more fitting.
I will start re-watch soon (at least in parts), because friends of mine started watching, but I have yet to convince them that it gets better than it currently is (they are in episode four).

Renfield and Souls
There's an aspect of Renfield's death that has really not been addressed in the discussion, at least from what I’ve seen. A lot happened in early October so I know it’s a lot to take in, but Renfield is important to me okay. So, I think it's an important aspect to throw into the discussion! That being: Seward and Renfield’s final dialogue together on Oct. 1st about souls.
Long essay under the cut:
The discussion that Seward has with Renfield about souls is not just Seward being a malpractice jerk, bullying his patient and making him worry about things that he doesn't need to worry about- which I’ve seen other posts claim. From Seward’s point of view, this is Seward trying to figure Renfield out and understand what he's going through currently, considering the outburst Renfield had about being let out. He wants to know of Dracula’s involvement as well. But from Renfield’s point of view, this discussion turns his entire worldview upside down. In a stressful way, yes, but ultimately a good way- towards his redemption! Seward did say he was being ‘cruel to be kind’ by challenging Renfield’s beliefs about consuming lives- and this ultimately ends up true!
The element of souls is really important to Renfield's eventual character arc. With Lucy, Renfield had washed his hands of her fate in terms of his own personal responsibility. He was not very involved- besides the attempted murder attack on Seward (which I very much believe Dracula instructed of him, to get Seward out of the picture that night, as he definitely did not expect Helsing’s letter to not reach him in time lol).
Regardless, after he felt that he was not going to get what he wanted from Dracula, he washed his hands of the situation, and went back to his flies and his spiders. For a while, he acts like his old self again, as Seward notes during Lucy’s time as a vampire.
In this way, it is the same when he meets Mina. He initially starts to regret the way her fate shall go when he meets her. However, he is unable to be set free by Seward and the others, and so he is forced to let Dracula in against his will (His not being let free was also an act done out of fear of Dracula’s control over him, by the way, not out of ableism. Seward says in a ‘dreamy’ (evidently uneasy and emotionally impacted) way, that if Dracula had not been involved, he would have taken the risk of trusting Renfield). But after this event, he decides to wash his hands of it again, and even doubles down on his alliance with Dracula, saying that he will be like Enoch, as he would ‘walk with God (Dracula).’
After this, Seward has his discussion with Renfield about souls, which visibly leads to Renfield starting to think and worry. Renfield begins stressing over the souls of the animals he’s consumed- and the future weight of Mina's soul. He knows he is responsible for her being in danger of the Count, and now that souls are involved, he cannot just disassociate and wash his hands of it as he had wanted to.
Without Seward talking to him about souls, I do not believe Renfield would have changed his mind. Before, he was willing to accept his lack of agency, and live as best he could with what he had. But now, he is trying to save his eternal soul. What he wants is life, he may even want to live forever- but upon the realization that he could be cursed and doomed forever for having chosen the path that he has, and that he could be haunted by that sweet girl's soul forever, even if he does live- he instead chooses to save Mina.
He has only known Mina for a few days after all- it is not entirely her kindness that leads him to wanting to save her. It is not simply a situation of "the one person who has ever been nice to me is in danger!" Her kindness is an important element- he cares about her and thus he cares about her death (or damnation) being his responsibility. But there is also the self-serving element- that being the salvation of his own soul. It makes sense then- narratively- that with his death, this heroic act of trying to save Mina from his own wrongdoing, he is able to free himself from his previous "sins.” He is able to redeem himself and absolve himself of guilt.
Relatedly, I think it is quite interesting how a “maniac” was given this treatment in such an old book! For the time period, most of Seward's actions towards him are not uncommon or unexpected (besides his early experimental actions, like letting Renfield escape, letting him eat bugs and collect birds, etc). Despite being a “lunatic”, Renfield is an important sympathetic character, and I think that he has an important role not just in exploring Dracula’s influence over others, but also in a commentary about the value of every human life.
"The world is full of good men, even if there are monsters in it." A large theme within Dracula (in my opinion) is the focus on humanity vs the devil. Humanity is good, if selfish at times- it can be tempted, of course. But ultimately it is good, and loving, and you can trust and ultimately believe in it. People care, people love, people have value. People are virtuous. And while every single human being is also flawed- this should not mean that any of them should be cast aside.
I think the inclusion of a "lunatic” and his redemption adds to the thoroughness of this message! He is someone considered lesser- not just by Seward, but also by the audience of the time period. Stoker was writing during a time when people would share in a number of opinions with Seward about the mentally ill, and so did Stoker himself.
Everyone talks about the line, "You will, I trust, Dr. Seward, do me the justice to bear in mind, later on, that I did what I could to convince you to-night.” and that it ends up coming true. Seward did indeed make the wrong choice- and it was the correct answer to listen to Renfield and to value his input.
Despite the old-timey beliefs, I find that Dracula aims to show that even those who have 'fallen from grace,' or those who are 'lesser,' are still people. They are human. Seward thinks it strange to introduce Renfield to the others- yet he is introduced. Seward’s (and the assumed reader’s) views are being challenged here.
Renfield- and those who are “insane”- are not the devil. And so, while they can be flawed, they can make mistakes, they are human. And ultimately good. They have an immortal soul just like everyone else, and those souls deserve redemption, deserve to be viewed in full- as a whole life. Renfield's story is a tragic one, but also one where the audience is asked to care about him, pity him, sympathize with him- when after the entire book you were led to overlook him.
Despite his “madness”, he is still a man. And he was able to redeem his soul, even after making a deal with the ‘devil’ and falling under Dracula's spell. The mere fact that the book expects you to overlook Renfield or to see him as a villain for most of its runtime- but in the end he ends up being a tragic hero, I think is very compelling!
He was not a villain after all- he was merely a flawed man! The only villain here is Dracula... and even he should be pitied, because at one time, he too was a man.

Oh cool, asks are open :)
I sent ask from a while ago about greek mythology getting mixed up with with the biblical setting and I came up with a more structured theory but it requires adding John Milton's 'Paradise Lost' to the mix, or more precisely, adding his descriptions of multiple pre-christian deities as demons that followed Lucifer to hell which implies that they used to be angels as well. maybe they were supposed to act as guides for humanity but decided to be gods under the radar until the whole Lucifer thing made the Father more aware of the freewill and stuck them in hell too, explaining their absence (trapped with Luci).
This would also open the posibility that Minos and Sisphyus are actually Nephilim by their relation to Zeus and Prometheus respectively (maybe they too are also Nephilim since greek mythology has several generations of gods? make the Father Chaos?), flying under the radar since they never expressed any real divine power in life and mortals claim divine parentage all the time. Also Nephilim are described as giants and if the prime state is conected to it then that explains why its so rare for mortals. and connects to Fallen Gabe's power, his unshackled state is the 'proper' one and the prime souls are the watered down verson of it due to their human aspect but still terrifying to a standard angel.
I had fun coming up with this. ;)
we can ALWAYS shove paradise lost in since it's genuinely one of my favorite pieces of literature and i already include a lot of ideas from it into my own headcanons (i read it and the divine comedy back to back the first time and so. they're already linked in my head forever), though i do have issue with the biblical precedent of labeling other gods as "demons" in christianity (it's a work from the 1600s, i know!! but still a terrible thing to do regardless of time period). in this context i do think of it as god, once again, feeling frustrated and threatened by his creations not behaving exactly as he wanted - the watchers of enoch were helping humanity, teaching them different arts and works to help them advance. once again, like lucifer in some sense, they were reaching out to assist these new creations, wanting to share their knowledge with other beings who could understand. and god ruins them. he strikes them all down, dispatching michael to bind all the angels that had started a relationship with humanity and then sending the flood to wipe out all life on earth for the "transgression". and then, like lucifer once again, they are all labeled as demonic entities to be hated. also interesting to consider with the nephilim idea is that gabriel was the one sent to wipe them out while michael took care of their angel parents so. that's another dynamic between him and the prime souls lol
(and as an aside, i probably mentioned it BUT yes gabriel's strength as a fallen angel is influenced by the ideas in paradise lost! specifically actually the scene where satan is brought before gabriel where it is made clear angelic strength is controlled by god's influence. in my case, i took it as god restricting their limits and only allowing what he wanted while their true power is much more potent - as a fallen angel, these restrictions are lifted)

This is a Valentine's Day story, even though I never mention that it's VD, so you can completely think it's any other day of the year. I just wanted to post this today :)
Lucie craves ice cream in the middle of the night.
Rating: T Words: 1,700
Lucie opened her eyes to the dark room. She wasn’t sure of the time, but it must have been late, or at least later than the last time she had checked the grandfather clock on the mantel. She turned to the other side and sighed.
“Lucie,” said her husband.
“I’m sorry, did I wake you?” she wondered quietly.
“I wasn’t sleeping,” Jesse muttered. “You’ve been tossing and turning ever since we retired for the night. Is everything alright?”
“I can’t sleep, but this you already know,” she replied. “And I’m fine, don’t you worry,” she searched for his hand under the sheet, and squeezed it.
“Then what is it? Are you worried?”
Lucie grinned in the dark, even though he couldn’t see her. “I’m just famished.”
“Ah,” he replied in acknowledgement. It wasn’t the first time this happened, and it wouldn’t be the last for a while. “Do you crave something in particular?”
“Ice cream,” she confessed. “With chocolate and honey. And vanilla?”
“Yes?”
“No, wait. No vanilla. Chocolate and honey will do,” she decided, and without further ado, she got off the bed and put her slippers on.
Jesse turned on the lamp on his side, and she heard the shuffling of the quilt behind her. “Wouldn't it be better if I got it for you?” he tilted his head to the side, “in bed?”
“I need to stretch my legs. I haven’t moved much this week,” she glared at him as she put on her nightgown.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he protested. “It was Brother Enoch’s advice.”
“Advice means that it’s my choice whether to follow it or not,” she shrugged. “Ah, my back hurts from sitting too long. And my legs too.”
“I know, but it’s for your own good,” he put her arm under his and they exited their room. “You said that you were exhausted and a little out of breath. You need to take it easy.”
“It’s awful,” she sighed. “Thank the angel I can still write in this condition! Though I’m slower and likely behind on my deadline.”
“The deadline is not important right now,” Jesse said. “Your health is.”
“And ice cream with chocolate and honey,” she added. “If there’s any left from dinner.”
“Ice cream definitely helps,” he giggled. “I asked Bridget to ward off your father from eating a second cup. She assured me she would guard the refrigerator if need be.”
“You are an angel,” she squeezed his arm. “And quite thoughtful. Am I starting to get predictable? I only asked for ice cream once. What if I wanted something that it’s hard to find in the winter season like plums?”
“If it ever comes to that, I’ll see what I can do.”
And Lucie believed him.
Throughout the last eight months, she had the weirdest cravings. Some things she desired were easy to find in London. It was a big city, after all, with numerous markets. It was a crossroads for products from different parts of the globe. You could find just anything if you knew where to look – or that was what Jesse told her.
They sat down at the kitchen table and Lucie was eager to find that Bridget had kept her promise. Not only had she left ice cream, she had left enough for two.
“You should grab a spoon, Jesse,” she encouraged him. “Help yourself.”
“No, thanks,” he said. “You know that I can’t eat before bed because I get heartburn.”
“I thought the herbal tea you started drinking after dinner was helping, though,” she said. “At least that’s what you told me.”
“Did I? I must have forgotten,” he nodded and crossed his arms on his chest.
She raised an eyebrow and finished the last of her ice cream. “Ah! This was delicious,” she looked upwards in awe. “Too bad you didn’t want it. You don’t know what you’ve missed.”
“Feeling better?”
“I’m –” she closed her eyes briefly, and suppressed a shudder as she felt the pressure under her stomach. “By the angel, this was intense.”
Jesse had already scooted closer to her, his hand pressed gently behind her back. “A contraction?” he asked calmly, but she saw his eyes widen in alert.
“Alas. I’m fine,” she sighed, and touched her belly instinctively. “But now I need to run to the bathroom.”
Jesse couldn’t help but chuckle.
In the end, Jesse had to use the restroom as well, and Lucie told him she would try to sleep because exhaustion was finally getting to her. She assured him she didn’t need help walking back to their room, and he went about his business.
She yawned on her way back, the only thing she wanted to see was her bed. She knew that eating ice cream would probably help her sleep. But then, once she entered her room and her glance fell on the writing machine on the desk, she remembered something important.
Her back still hurt, and she needed to sit down. Instead of sitting down on the mattress, though, she sat on the chair behind her desk, and started to type.
“Lucie,” she heard a voice calling her, a light touch on her shoulders. “Lucie.”
She raised her head from the typewriter. “Uhm?”
“You fell asleep on the machine.”
“Did I?” wiping drool off her mouth. She had written a few sentences, the last one behind made only of g’s. “I hadn’t realized it.”
“Come on, let’s get you to bed,” he whispered, and Lucie let him help her this time.
Lucie sat at her desk the following morning, with two pillows propped behind her aching back. She felt energized and had a goal in mind. She wasn’t sure she would make it, but she could try.
Eating ice cream in the middle of the night had helped her get a good night’s sleep, at least. Once she settled into bed in a comforting position – lying on her side, a fluffy cushion under her arm – and her husband kissed her cheek, everything dulled out in a matter of minutes.
When she woke up, someone had already opened the curtains, and light shined through the high windows. She found the other side of the bed empty. Unlike her, who was forced to rest most of the days because her due date was approaching, Jesse had matters to attend to with her papa.
Soon, Jesse himself would become a dad, and she would become a mom. Sometimes she had to see her big belly to remind herself that there was a little life growing inside of her. Or glance at her hand to see the Blackthorn family ring that Jesse had given to her few years prior.
Her vision became blurry and she had to stop typing.
“Lucie,” a sweet voice interrupted her thoughts.
“I thought you were out,” she said, blinking her tears away.
“I was out,” he came closer and leaned on the side of the desk next to her. “Your father canceled this afternoon’s appointments, which means I don’t have any more work to do.”
“He probably just wanted to spend the day with mam,” she chuckled.
“Well, can you blame a man who wants to have lunch with his wife?”
“Not at all, no,” she grinned. “So, you want to have lunch with me, huh? I’m afraid I can’t go out, darling.”
“That’s why we are staying in. Would you do me the honor?”
“Yes, but first –” she paused, and gave him a couple of pages. “This is for you.”
Jesse frowned at the sheets of paper. “Something new you’ve written?”
She nodded eagerly. “It doesn’t have an ending, but it’s intentional.”
“How so?”
“Read it and you’ll find out.”
“Now?”
“Not now, silly,” she chuckled. “Your pregnant wife is famished and she’s waiting for you to take her to lunch or she’s going to be really annoying and emotional.”
He rolled his eyes at her with a smile. “Come on, love.”
They ate in the drawing room, which Jesse, with Tessa’s help, turned into a dining room for the occasion. Bridget usually followed a schedule when it came to lunch and dinner, but today she made an exception for them. She prepared one of Lucie’s favorites for dessert, bread and butter pudding. Jesse also gifted her a box of chocolate and it made her happy.
Afterward, they lounged on the couch by the fire. Lucie enjoyed the warmth of the room and Jesse’s company as he read the pages she gave him a few hours ago.
“Thank you for today,” Lucie said suddenly.
“Wait,” he demanded. “I still haven’t finished.”
Lucie put her hands on her stomach and waited, a small grin on her face. “Sure.”
“This story feels autobiographical,” he glanced at her. “Is it?”
She blushed. “It is. I just found myself thinking about the future, and it scared me. This new phase of my life makes me anxious. At the same time, I’m really excited about it.”
“It is normal, being scared,” he grinned. “We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, but that’s how life works. It makes sense that the ending of this story is open. It isn’t done, and we are going to write the rest together. And we’ll have to face new challenges we haven’t experienced before. We may trip and fall, but no one is born a master. Making mistakes will be part of the journey and it will strengthen us.”
“You totally get it,” she nodded, feeling the tears ready to fall again. “That’s what I was aiming for, trying to give myself strength and not letting my fears get a hold on me.”
“Oh, Lucie,” he cupped her face. “I’m also scared, but I know we will support each other and we will make it.”
“Hearing you say it makes me feel better,” she said. “There’s something I want to happen in the story right now. To continue the story with a playful memory.”
“Are you going to let me try one of the pralines I gave to you?”
“Later,” she said. “Can you kiss me? You know, in exchange for the chocolate.”
Jesse sighed. “I was going to kiss you anyway,” he muttered.
Lucie kissed him first.
