Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (2022, dir. Alejadro González Iñárritu) - review by Rookie-Critic

I am a huge fan of Alejandro González Iñárritu. I've liked every film I've seen of his. Babel was great, Biutiful was, well, beautiful, and Birdman was absolutely breathtaking. So I went into Bardo with fairly high expectations. I had heard that it was incredibly surreal, but so was Birdman, so I wasn't really surprised. However, to call Bardo just "surreal" is almost underselling the nature of it. If you're a viewer who really enjoys when movies are clear, concise, and lay their stories out plainly and linearly, then Bardo is most likely not for you. It is a tough watch, both because of how bizarre it is and because of its length. Generally I wouldn't necessarily refer to a two and a half hour film as overlong (in the post Avengers: Endgame world, how could you?), but I definitely think Bardo is, and it's indicative of probably the film's biggest fault: it's exceedingly boring. It really pains me to say that, because there are a lot of beautiful, amazing things about this film that I'll talk about a little later on, and I don't want to diminish those things by boiling them down with one of the most basic complaints imaginable, but it is. It's boring. Almost every single scene in the entire 159 minute span of this film overstays its welcome, even the ones that are amazing are lessened with just too much. I don't even know that I really want any particular sequence to be removed, because they're all so crucial to the film's message, but they can all be re-edited, touched up in some way that removes a lot of the fluff (and there's a lot of fluff).

Iñárritu hits an absolute home run with every sequence; he hits the ball out of the park, runs the bases, then runs them again, and then runs them again, and eventually your eyes glaze over as you just watch this happen scene after scene after scene, so much so that when you eventually clock back in and start paying attention again, you're bewildered by the fact that, sometimes, he's still running the bases on a home run he hit well over 10 minutes ago. I had to consistently run the film back more times than I even cared to count because I just kept tuning out. A shot would linger for, I'm not joking, minutes longer than it needed to, and I would miss the first few sentences or the next important moment because my brain had just flown away with my attention in tow. It is so frustrating because, again, when the movie does hit those home runs, it is a remarkable film.

Bardo has so many themes and topics that it seeks to tackle (as Iñárritu's films often do), but I think the one that I kept coming back to, and what I personally believe is the focal point of the film's efforts, is the double-edged nature of being Mexican in the modern world. How does one take pride in their Mexican heritage and culture, one that is unarguably brimming with life and food and dance and an overwhelming brightness and love for all things, while also acknowledging the crumbling nature of the country itself? How do you reconcile that disconnect between so badly wanting to live in this country that, in your heart, is your home, is your heartland, and understanding that things will be better for you, for your family, for your children, to leave it because of its increasing failure to represent the nature of it's culture and be a beacon for its people? On the flip side of that, how do you then reconcile your love for this new land, this new country, that has provided you opportunity and relative safety and this better life, when this country is also, in its own way, crumbling, and crumbling in a way that doesn't accept you or your culture? At that point, where does your culture even belong? Where is its home? These central questions drive Bardo in such a forceful, unabashed way that I absolutely fell in love with. It's tragic, it's sorrowfully funny, it's not easy, and the answers aren't there in a complete way, but Iñárritu seeks to challenge the notion that these things can't live with each other, and I think he nails it, absolutely crushes it, but then he oversells his point. It makes the atmosphere around the viewing experience of Bardo one of patience, of constantly hitting the "up" button on your remote to bring up the timeline so you can check how much longer the film has left to go, and that breaks my heart, because in the forest that is Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, is another Iñárritu masterpiece, it's just locked tightly in a shell of a film that is lesser than the sum of its individual parts.

Week 5: Cultural Immersion

My family came to visit this week! Started off strong with an organized lunch with our professors where we the students cooked lunch. I got the chance to show off my chops by searing some steaks and topping them with a red wine sauce I made from scratch. After that I met with my family for dinner. I got the chance to show them around and experience some of the nicer restaurants that I can’t afford on my own. It was really nice to see my family again as it feels like every year I see them less and less. With college and internships I spend a lot less time at home so it’s always refreshing to see them again.

Wednesday after work I took them to one of my favorite restaurants/tavern called Juantxos. We had bocadillos de tortilla and I taught my mom what a kalimotxo is. Typical drink here that’s half wine and half coke, delicious.

Little bro got a new haircut. They gave him the classic spanish cut.

Thursday was much the same with us exploring the city. We did some shopping and I packed a bag to stay with my family for the weekend. I had Friday off as part of our program.

Friday we decided to drive to the French side of the Basque Country. We explored Saint Jean De Luz and Saint Jean Pied de Port. The Pyrenese are gorgeous. Incredible green landscapes full of cattle. Saint Jean de Luz is a gorgeous city as well. Similar to San Sebastian in that it is a coastal city. It was incredible to see the similarities and differences between the Spanish and French Basque Country. Saint Jean Pied de Port was my favorite place we went to this weekend. Quintessential French Basque town where every house is white with orange roof tiles and built around a stone palace atop a hill. It is the start of the Road to Santiago, a pilgrimage many christians do to Santiago de Compostela. We had delicious food and delicious cider in a cider house. 

Saturday we explored Biarritz. My dad has an old friend he met there when he worked at Epcot in college. It was awesome to be shown around by a local and we capped the day off with one of the best meals I’ve ever had at Cafe de Paris.

Sunday we head towards Lourdes. The spot of the appearance of the Virgin at the Grotto of Massabielle. It is a cute town home to a breathtaking church and pilgrimage site. Being raised catholic it was an incredible experience to share with my family. We ended the day back in San Sebastian for the Noche de San Juan celebration. A tradition here for the summer solstice characterized by traditional basque dancing as well as the burning of a tree.

Overall, I had an incredible week. I saw my family, explored new cities, and connected with new cultures. Always a city boy I still think I love the idea of living in a tiny town more than a big city. Hopefully sometime in the future I’ll be able to return to these little towns and stay for longer.

El desafío de la estrella - Prediquemos Podcast

"El desafío de la estrella" enfoca en la historia bíblica de los Magos y su viaje para encontrar a Jesús, interpretada desde una perspectiva científica y espiritual. Su idea central es que Jesús es el Mesías, y su propósito es ilustrar este relato bíblico de una manera narrativa y en primera persona, coincidiendo con la celebración del Día de Reyes o el Día de la Epifanía.

El narrador se describe como un hombre de ciencias criado en Persia, influenciado por la doctrina de Zaratustra (Zoroastro), que enseña sobre la lucha entre el bien y el mal, representada por Ahura Mazda y Angra Mainyu (Ahrimán), respectivamente. Esta visión del mundo le lleva a estudiar las estrellas, donde descubre un astro peculiar que lo lleva a investigar más.

A través del estudio de la estrella y las escrituras hebreas, el narrador experimenta una crisis de fe, ya que su devoción a Ahura Mazda se ve desafiada por las enseñanzas del Dios de Israel. Esta búsqueda lo lleva a un entendimiento más profundo de Dios, viéndolo como la única divinidad verdadera y la luz del mundo, según las escrituras hebreas.

Junto con otros sabios, sigue la estrella hasta Judea, buscando al nuevo rey prometido. Al llegar a Jerusalén, se encuentran con el rey Herodes, quien se muestra perturbado por su búsqueda y les pide que le informen sobre el paradero del niño. Sospechando las intenciones de Herodes, los Magos siguen la estrella hasta Belén, donde encuentran a Jesús con María y José. Los Magos experimentan una revelación espiritual al ver al niño, reconociéndolo como el Mesías, y le presentan regalos simbólicos.

 El relato concluye con los Magos evitando a Herodes y regresando a sus hogares por otro camino, convencidos de la divinidad de Jesús y transformados por su encuentro. El narrador afirma su fe en Jesús como el salvador de la humanidad, destacando cómo este encuentro cambió su vida y puede cambiar la de toda persona que le busque con fe.

Notas rápidas

Madrid sin si no es tan Madrid, que diría aquel, o Niña Polaca. También escuché la de los Karavana en el momento que irrumpí a voces en un Rodilla preguntando si por la puerta pasaba el Circular que me llevase sano y en hora a Atocha. Todo lo demás fue un balance positivo que realicé, despeinado y con legañas, en lo que dura el trayecto desde Ibiza hasta Mariano de Cavia. Un cartel del concierto de fin de año de los Lori Meyers en un bar de Malasaña -dónde casi se solapan REM y los Cure- y que quizá sea una señal, diez mahous, una inauguración con amigos y cuatro cuadros de Monet. Unas risas en Chamberí y una tanda ajustadísima de naturales de Borja Jimenez -el William Dafoe del toreo- desde el alto del Siete. Diez mahous más. El Toldo del Guarro, sus corrillos en la entrada y un hogar que me he echado por la cara en Diego de León. Sonrisa férrea, y parada a tiempo en Atocha.

Ya había arramblado -y deslumbrado- Alida Valli el salón de casa cuando dejó vencido y hecho pedazos sobre su escritorio a un Gregory Peck atormentado. Un poco más tarde, tras los títulos de crédito, en un podcast viejo y lejano, la voz de Carlos Pumares comenzaba su programa con el Killing Me Softly With His Song de Roberta Flack. No podía sonar más actual -en pleno directo- aquella dedicatoria de inicio lanzada al aire una noche de principios de los noventa, y que acabaría recogiendo ese pequeño ejercito -en el que ahora estamos tu y yo- que han formado aquellos que apagan la luz, se quitan los problemas de encima y se acuestan con una radio bajo la almohada. Con el poso de los planos de la actriz italiana -fría e irresistible-  y los comentarios del locutor despachando oyentes con gracia y agilidad se fue cerrando una noche más, o una noche menos, agradeciendo todas las cosas buenas que descubrimos, que nos quedan por descubrir y que tanto calor nos dan. Polvo de estrellas, ni más ni menos.

Tenemos a Alexa con españolerías y música instrumental; Alexa nos hace la tarde porque estamos solos, aunque toda la semana fue de puro "Vino, Mujeres y Canto", en compañía de la distinguida señora Manchega y familia, debido a graduaciones y cumpleaños. Estamos que reventamos, pero no nos rajamos.

Javier y Plácido nos deleitan los tímpanos con sus magistrales voces y de allí tomamos el título de esta colaboración, porque nos referiremos a la hermosa ciudad de Valencia, que se apresta a celebrar su serial taurino del 20 al 23 de julio, según las noticias andaluzas.

Serán 3 corridas 3 y una novillada, por lo pronto están acartelaos "El Juli", Manzanares (?) (al parecer está en recuperación), Morante de la Puebla, Talavante, Rocarrey y Calletano. Para estas corridas las reses serán de Juan Pedro Domecq, Hnos. García Jimenez, Miura y Cuadri, en tanto que para la novillada, los utreros llegarán de La Cercada.

Ganas nos sobran para estar en Valencia, tanto que nos hizo recordar algunos versos o mejor dicho, copiar de nuestros apuntes, algunos versos de poetas españoles que sus nombres se nos escapan:
