#Maslow's Hierarchy
When my class was going over questions we had about part one of 1984, someone asked why there was a shortage of razor blades; my teacher mentioned that shortages of essential items such as razor blades are probably orchestrated by The Party in order to keep its members in poverty. At first one might wonder why the heck they would want their members to have such poor living conditions, but then it occurred to me: it has to do with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. According to Maslow, a person’s basic needs for survival (such as food, water, shelter, and, by extension, a feeling of safety) must be met before they can worry about higher needs such as love, self-esteem, and self-actualization (including creative and intellectual pursuits). Obviously Party members wouldn’t feel safe knowing that Big Brother is constantly watching them through the telescreens and a network of spies, and if they are also kept in a state of fluctuating half-poverty due to the occasional scarcity of a basic need such as food or, in this instance, razor blades, they will be more likely to worry about if they’re going to have enough food or how long their clothes will last and less likely to start committing thoughtcrimes. From Big Brother’s standpoint, it’s genius: keeping your citizens preoccupied with the physical conditions in which they live ensures that they will not have the time or energy to conspire or rise up against you.

Thinking about governments through the lens of Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs.
Early governments formed basically to enable a small group of elites to reach the top of that Hierarchy, which was a cool new thing for humans to be able to experience
Modern governments mostly formed around the idea of protecting everyone's right to try and get there, to prevent government itself keeping some people at the bottom to help others to reach the top
Today, I think we think a lot about whether the right role of government might be to focus more on ensuring everyone can access the bottom, possibly even by making it infinitesimally harder for elites to reach the top.
And the elites on top are using everything they can to stop that.

The local police, building inspector, and fire marshal are all contesting my 'safety' assertion, or would be if they could reach me past all the traps.
Maslow's Pyramid [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Cueball leading White Hat and Megan to a giant pyramid modelled after Maslow's hierarchy of needs, with each tier labelled after its need on the pyramid, and a comment next to it in the comic.]
Self actualization: [X] Honestly questioning my life choices here
Esteem: [X] People seem less impressed by it than I hoped
Belonging and Love: [X] Friends are worried about me
Safety: [Checkmark] Highly defensible
Physiological needs: [X] Provides basic shelter but no food, water, heat, et cetera.
Caption: I built Maslow's pyramid thing, but it's a total ripoff - it's only providing 20% of my needs.

Maslow before Bloom
In my work as a personal leadership coach, this mantra. People must have their fundamental human needs addressed before we can get into professional development. So my coaching conversations always begin with a real, conscious check-in of how they are doing, as people.

Adapted from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
What is a need? (Adapted from this article)
It’s important to be connected to our needs because true needs are always in our best long term interest. Our needs for air, food, water, shelter, community, companionship, autonomy, respect, etc. are all in our best long term interest to fulfill.
Wants, on the other hand, don’t necessarily correlate with long term well-being. In fact, many wants, when fulfilled, actually contribute to our long term detriment.
Put another way: needs refer to the conditions that must be met in order for us to live a balanced life; whereas wants are strategies we use to fulfill our needs. This is why needs inherently map to long term well-being, while wants don’t have such a correlation. Wants can either contribute to our long-term wellbeing, or they contribute to our long-term detriment. In order for our wants to be good for us in the long-term, we must understand which needs they map back to.
Ideally, we should be connected to our needs first, and our wants second. When we become disconnected from our needs due to past trauma, we rely too heavily on our wants to guide our decision making. The disconnection from our needs increases the likelihood that we will attach to wants that lead to our long-term detriment.

all things considered i don’t actually think tamsyn is setting up augustine or silas to act as virgil to harrow’s dante in hell unless alecto the ninth plays with time dilation, which would be really interesting! but as it stands neither of these characters have been in hell particularly long. ulysses on the other hand has presumably been in hell for thousands of years and he’s still a bit of an unanswered question given the revelations about him in nona the ninth. like… whose soul does he have? john acquired him as a corpse!! john named him after a dog!!! john’s dead kid that founded the dead kid house… ulysses the first i would love to know you……
