How about this. Buy your own property. Live on the streets. Or rent one. You can't build anything on any property that isn't yours. That would be illegal. Be thankful that people rent out their property to share so you don't have to deal with the property tax.
Or people could not buy houses they don't need? Owning a house you rent out is a way of generating profit from people who have less money than you, like a reverse robin hood
Plus it reduces supply of houses, which means house prices are inflated and even more people are forced to rent because they can't afford to buy. Deposits for a mortgage are generally more than a year's wages. So if you want to buy, you gotta scrimp and save for years whilst paying someone else's mortgage
Hell, even better them not buying houses you don't need, we could actually recognise housing as a human right and make sure people have what they need to survive
And finally, lol, I rent in the uk, I pay the property taxes

All landlords, cops and billionaires must perpetuate evil in order to maintain their status as such in society, if they didn't help uphold the evils of this system, they won't remain any of these 3 for long

I’m gonna make this its own post bs it’s not nice to keep rambling a tangent on someone else’s post but like. It’s just fully blowing my mind that my shitty $480/month apt in Indianapolis in 2006 is going for like $1500 now.
I always trot that very low rent figure out as a “back in my day” anecdote (where I live now in Austin) bc a similar place would probably go for $2000 here in 2024. And it’s so cuckoo today to hear someone say “my half of the rent in my first apartment was $240.” Like is she 60? Nope she’s not even 40 yet! It’s gotten that bad that fast!!! Haha!
But I didn’t even know the half of it. I’d never done the work to know 1) what those very shitty apts rent for now (and they still exist?!) and 2) what the rent would have been in 2024 if it just kept pace with NORMAL INFLATION ($734) which is already bad in its self.
I mean come on! $1500 is what we’ve got vs $734 which is what one would expect if you could control for the ever escalating greed or corporate profits and the ultra wealthy making a literal killing off of the basic human right of shelter.
To say it’s enraging to think about is my understatement of the week.

Landlord bootlickers think landlords are important to the rental market because when they leave, the properties go off the rental market, as if the properties cease to exist, rather than being shifted to the sellers market and sold. This logic exists in a vacuum. The vacuum of pro landlord brain rot. In reality, landlords have taken property from the private sellers market, which otherwise would have been bought by people to live in, such as couples or familes etc, but instead have become part of an investment portfolio. This is where the propaganda begins. Landlord stans will claim that the landlord putting the property up for rent to be rented by, the family or couple or person who got outbidded on the private market by the landlord, is a good thing because it is providing a market. They will never acknowledge that the property has been horded, stolen right out from under the people who want to buy it to live in. Instead you get this cognitive dissoance about how the landlords are providing a service and we should all be grateful, and to never call out landlords on being scum of the earth when they pull shit such as putting a bed up on the market for rent, in a shared room, in a shared house.
They will never admit that by forcing a landlord to sell up, that it will be a net benefit to the rental market by reducing demand. That's one less family/couple/person looking for a place to rent and will be able to buy. That's a good thing, especially during this housing crises. There are too many people on the private rental market because they have no choice. They need a place to live, and the private rental market really isn't sutiable and the options are slim already. So this pro landlord propaganda rubs me the wrong way. Why should we bend over backwards to cater to them? Their apologists act like when a landlord enters the rental market that the property they are offering just spontaneously pop into existence! And extend that thinking to when landlords sell up, that the property ceases to exist. It's magical thinking, but I don't put that past much people in this country to be perfectly honest.

Also, if you are a landbastard and refuse to rent to a university student because you're "afraid they don't make due with rent" and "cover the bills", perhaps you should find an actual job, because being a leech is clearly not something you excel at.
If I'm a student and this 1 bedroom studio isn't meant for me, who is it for? A family of 3 with stable income? An elderly person living in a space so cramped they can't move?
For the love of the Universe I can't even.
Squat the fucking world.
