Advanced Smart Money Trading: Mastering S&P and Nasdaq Futures for Maximum Profit
Tumblr media
In the world of futures trading, understanding Smart Money Trading is crucial. This approach helps traders identify the moves of institutional players, allowing them to make more informed decisions. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures are two of the most popular markets among traders, offering high liquidity and numerous opportunities. This guide will cover everything from the basics to advanced strategies, ensuring you have the tools needed to excel in these markets.
Understanding Smart Money Trading
Smart Money Trading is a concept that revolves around following the actions of institutional investors, often referred to as "smart money." These players include hedge funds, investment banks, and large asset managers who have the resources and information to influence market movements. By identifying and following the smart money trends, retail traders can position themselves on the winning side of the trade.
Key concepts in Smart Money Trading include:
Order Flow Analysis: Understanding the flow of orders in the market to identify buying and selling pressure.
Volume Spread Analysis (VSA): Analyzing price action and volume to determine the strength of a market move.
Market Structure: Recognizing key levels of support, resistance, and price patterns that indicate potential reversals or continuations.
By mastering these techniques, traders can gain a significant edge in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures markets.
The Importance of S&P and Nasdaq Futures
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 are two of the most widely traded futures contracts. They represent a broad spectrum of the U.S. economy, with the S&P 500 encompassing 500 of the largest companies and the Nasdaq 100 focusing on 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
Top reasons to trade S&P and Nasdaq Futures include:
Liquidity: These markets are highly liquid, meaning you can enter and exit positions with minimal slippage.
Leverage: Futures contracts allow traders to control large positions with relatively small amounts of capital.
Market Hours: These futures trade nearly 24 hours a day, providing ample opportunities for trading.
Volatility: Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 are known for their volatility, which can lead to significant profit opportunities for informed traders.
Advanced Strategies for S&P and Nasdaq Futures
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s delve into some advanced strategies for mastering S&P and Nasdaq Futures.
1. Order Flow and Volume Profile
Understanding order flow is crucial for identifying the actions of smart money. By analyzing the volume traded at each price level, traders can identify areas of significant buying or selling interest. Volume Profile tools help traders visualize this data, providing insights into where institutional players are likely to enter or exit positions.
Key elements of Order Flow and Volume Profile:
Point of Control (POC): The price level with the highest traded volume, often acting as a magnet for price.
Value Area: The price range where a significant portion of trading activity occurs.
Order Imbalance: A situation where there is a significant difference between buy and sell orders, indicating potential market direction.
2. Market Profile and Auction Market Theory
Market Profile is a tool that organizes price, volume, and time into a graphical representation, providing a clear picture of market structure. This concept is closely related to Auction Market Theory, which suggests that markets operate as an auction process, constantly seeking to establish fair value.
Using Market Profile in trading S&P and Nasdaq Futures:
Identifying Trends: Recognize when the market is trending versus when it’s in a range-bound state.
Profile Shapes: Understand different profile shapes (e.g., P-shape, b-shape) and what they indicate about market sentiment.
Initial Balance (IB): The price range established in the first hour of trading, often setting the tone for the rest of the day.
3. Trading the Opening Range
The opening range refers to the price range established during the first 30 minutes to an hour of trading. Many professional traders focus on the opening range as it often dictates the market's direction for the rest of the day.
Strategies for trading the Opening Range:
Breakout Strategy: Entering a trade when price breaks above or below the opening range, with a stop loss placed just inside the range.
Fade Strategy: Taking the opposite side of a breakout if the price fails to sustain momentum beyond the opening range.
4. Swing Trading with Smart Money Concepts
Swing trading involves holding positions for several days to capture medium-term price movements. When applied to Smart Money Trading concepts, swing trading can be particularly effective in S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures.
Key concepts in Swing Trading:
Institutional Levels: Identifying key levels where institutions are likely to have placed significant orders.
Market Cycles: Understanding the different phases of the market (accumulation, markup, distribution, markdown) to time entries and exits.
Divergence Analysis: Using indicators like RSI or MACD to identify potential reversals in the market.
Risk Management in Futures Trading
No matter how advanced your trading strategies are, risk management remains a critical component of success. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures are leveraged instruments, meaning small price movements can result in significant gains or losses.
Key Risk Management Techniques:
Position Sizing: Never risk more than a small percentage of your capital on a single trade.
Stop Losses: Always use stop losses to limit potential losses.
Risk-to-Reward Ratio: Aim for trades with a favorable risk-to-reward ratio (e.g., 1:2 or higher).
Emotional Discipline: Stick to your trading plan and avoid making impulsive decisions based on emotions.
Tools and Resources for Advanced Futures Trading
To successfully implement Smart Money Trading techniques, it’s essential to have the right tools and resources at your disposal.
Top tools for S&P and Nasdaq Futures trading:
Order Flow Software: Platforms like Sierra Chart or Bookmap provide detailed order flow data.
Volume Profile Tools: TradingView and Thinkorswim offer Volume Profile indicators.
Market Profile Platforms: Use platforms like MarketDelta or NinjaTrader for Market Profile analysis.
Economic Calendars: Keep track of economic events that can impact market volatility with tools like Forex Factory or Econoday.
Conclusion
Mastering Advanced Smart Money Trading in S&P and Nasdaq Futures requires a deep understanding of market dynamics and the ability to apply sophisticated strategies. By following the concepts outlined in this guide, you can position yourself to trade alongside the smart money and achieve consistent profits.
Remember, success in futures trading doesn’t come overnight. It requires continuous learning, practice, and discipline. If you’re serious about taking your trading skills to the next level, consider enrolling in specialized courses like those offered on Udemy, where you can learn from industry experts and gain the knowledge needed to excel.
At Korshub, we are committed to helping you find the best courses to enhance your trading journey. By mastering these advanced strategies, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a proficient and profitable trader in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures markets.

Soundmate earbuds

Soundmate earbuds drivers#
Soundmate earbuds upgrade#
The bass response is heavy-handed, with a rather large dose of bass boost applied across the low-end, making the bass boomy and overwhelming. The tonality is focused heavily on the low-end, which is typical for budget audio products. The Skullcandy Jib True are mediocre-sounding earbuds. The earbuds connect in a master-slave configuration, where one (master) connects to the source and the other (slave) to the master. They support SBC and AAC over Bluetooth 5.0 connection.
Soundmate earbuds drivers#
The Jib True have 6mm dynamic drivers in each earbud with a 20-20,000kHz frequency response, 98-103dB SPL, and
Soundmate earbuds upgrade#
There doesn't seem to be any way to upgrade the firmware. You just pair them directly and then use your device or music player's EQ if you need to make any audio adjustments. The Jib True don't require or support any companion apps. The earbuds are easy to put on and remove and can be worn for hours at length without any discomfort. The Jib True include soft silicone ear tips. On the back is an outdated microUSB port for charging. The case has a single white LED on the outside, which blinks at various points but it's hard to figure out what exactly it is conveying. The case lid doesn't open particularly wide but it's still easy to pull the earbuds due to their chunky shape. The charging case has a very slim profile and fits inside tight jeans pockets easily. The earbuds have an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, which is great to see in this price range. This isn't particularly convenient and it's easier to just control playback from your phone. It's difficult to press these buttons without pushing the earbuds uncomfortably deep in your ears so you have to grab the top edge of the earbud and try to pinch the button. Each earbud has a physical button on the outside for controlling volume and playback. The earbuds are slightly on the chunkier side but don't stick out too much from your ears. You can also buy these in more plain Black or Gray colors. Our review unit came in the trendy Blue colorway, which has bright yellow and red highlights. Designĭespite the relatively low price, the Jib True don't feel cheap or poorly made. Priced at 30 USD/2999 INR, these earbuds are an easy entry point for those purchasing their first pair. The Jib True are meant to be a basic pair of truly wireless earbuds for undemanding buyers on a shoestring budget. The Skullcandy Jib True are the company's most inexpensive pair of wireless earbuds.

Career 102: Getting a job you have no experience in
Combined with the following asks:
Hey Mr ENTJ. Do you have advice on how to move from academia into industry for someone who has only research experience? Only a CV and not a resume? Thank you!
How do you spin skills from one industry to be applicable to another? I'm a theater and English major (yes, I know) and it's been difficult finding work lately, because I am stuck living in a state where there are little jobs for that. I've worked on films, weddings, as a curator guide at a museum, and have my AA. I've had good interview after good interview, and have been outright told at three different places that I was a perfect fit. And then they went with someone else. Any advice?
Hi Mr. ENTJ I love your blog, is a great source of information for me so thanks for that! I have a question if you don’t mind. What kind of advice would you give to a graduate student who has not worked on their field during college and now is looking for a job? I’m a Business major but I’m currently working as a language teacher at a private institute (it started as a part-time job) My salary’s really good, however I’d like to start working in business but I have no experience on that :( thnks!
Hi there! I've read some of your advice to other askers and find what you say very perceptive and realistic. I'd like to ask your opinion. I have Bachelors and Masters degrees in the life sciences. I worked in academia for 2 years but my field lacked funding so I left. I have no commercial experience.I have problems getting a job because of this and most companies' resistance to hiring nonpractical grads. I want to go into consulting which is more flexible with degrees. What would you advise?
Hi mr entj! This may be a bit of a stupid question but what should I do if I can't find the job in a field(actually sub-field of a field) that I'm aiming for? I'm looking to be a concept artist but I can't seem to find any such jobs that don't require atleast a year of experience and since I'm a fresher I don't have that. In my country, there is also not a tradition of getting small student jobs so I don't have that experience either. Help me with some tips please.

To break into a field that you have no experience in, translate the experiences in your current career into the “language” of your target career. The ultimate goal is this: make it as easy as possible for the hiring manager (and recruiter) to understand your background. People are lazy, they aren’t going to waste their time performing mental gymnastics to figure out how your obscure experience applies to their available job-- if they can’t figure it out-- your resume goes into the rejection pile. Make it easy for them.
To do that, see below.
Step 1: Collect multiple job descriptions of similar roles
The goal is to source as many overlapping skills as possible for the same role so that you can update your resume to reflect them. To illustrate this, let’s say you’re currently a school teacher but your goal is to become a Communications Manager for a tech company. What kind of skills are tech companies looking for in Communications Managers? A simple search on LinkedIn for “communications manager” yields 42,000 results:
Tumblr media
You don’t need to read all 42,000 job descriptions, but pick 4-5 that interest you from top companies (i.e. Lyft, Twitter, Facebook, Google) of similar nature. Top companies are leaders of the pack; their job descriptions are reliably the ones that other lower tier companies will copy.
Step 2: Identify key themes
All job descriptions that aren’t scams will have sections called “roles/responsibilities” and “minimum qualifications” with detailed bullet points describing what they’re looking for in the ideal candidate. As an example, I’ll use the Lyft “Internal Communications Manager” job description above and a “Communications Manager” job from Twitter to identify the key themes.
Lyft - Internal Communications Manager
Responsibilities
Work closely with and influence key company leadership to develop and disseminate their important messages to team members, including aligning the team on our strategy, goals, and priorities (Key theme: Communication)
Own strategy and results for keeping all relevant team members informed on important org news and updates in a timely and engaging manner.  (Key theme: Stakeholder management)
Provide strategic, direct hands-on support to key senior leaders  (Key theme: Project management)
Proactively identify new opportunities and develop new programs to continually up level our internal communications program  (Key theme: Analysis)
Successfully collaborate with cross-functional partners to execute on a comprehensive plan for seamless communications.  (Key theme: Collaboration)
Maintain the Lyft voice across all communications, written and verbal, and across company leadership (Key theme: Branding)
Keep Lyft fun!  (Key theme: Culture fit)
Twitter - Communications Manager
Roles And Responsibilities
Coordinate with various Twitter teams on product launches, announcements, issues and other news  (Key theme: Project management)
Craft communications materials with a high degree of consistency, conviction, and strong tone of voice (e.g. messaging docs, communications plans, blog posts, statements, Tweets)  (Key theme: Communication)
Drive proactive, creative storytelling around our products and the people who build them across a range of media, both traditional and non-traditional (press, podcasts, speaking engagements, video, etc.)  (Key theme: Communication)
Help the team establish and maintain relationships with reporters nationally and globally.  (Key theme: Stakeholder management)
Manage a high-volume of incoming queries from media covering product matters, and be able to consult and drive towards decision-making on press response during high-pressure scenarios  (Key theme: Project management)
Serve as a company spokesperson in the U.S. and in other markets.  (Key theme: Branding)
Draft, manage through reviews, and upload blog posts and Tweets for announcements and updates  (Key theme: Communication)
Track press coverage for key announcements; identify and correct inaccuracies in stories  (Key theme: Analysis)
Support team to drive proactive stories in global, local and industry-focused publications  (Key theme: Project management)
You’ll notice that the same key themes will emerge for similar roles. Extract these key themes and copy and paste them into your resume. Move to step 3.
Step 3: Translate your experience and achievements to map to these key themes
From the Lyft and Twitter Communications Manager job descriptions above, we have the following 7 key themes:
Communication: Writing, editing, speaking, etc.
Stakeholder management: How to be organized and manage large groups of people of different levels and backgrounds
Project management: How to be organized and adaptable to support senior leaders with whatever they need done
Analysis: How to be a critical thinker who can spot better ways to do things (AKA performance/process improvement)
Collaboration: How to achieve success with people from different backgrounds
Branding: How to write in the company’s voice or a voice not your own
Culture fit: You need to jive with the company’s organizational culture
As a school teacher, you may not have the exact experience required but you’ve definitely done work that maps to these key themes. Use the verbiage from the job descriptions to write new bullet points for your resume:
(Key theme: Communication): Crafted and distributed weekly internal communications to 500+ students on academic updates, key event announcements, and other news in collaboration with administrative staff
(Key theme: Communication): Managed a high volume of inquiries from parents and administrative staff on the academic performance of 30+ students, provided updates and resolved concerns resulting in strong performance ratings
(Key themes: Stakeholder management + project management): Collaborated closely with senior leadership and a team of parents, educators, and volunteers to fund, launch, and manage the school’s $400,000 music program resulting in new extracurricular opportunities for 40+ students
(Key theme: Analysis): Led strategic initiative to improve academic curriculum and identified new teaching methodologies for 20 ESL (English Second Language) students resulting in an 15% increase in annual graduation rates
It won’t be a perfect fit, you will still get a lot of rejections, but your profile and background are much easier to understand to someone hiring for a communication manager role than it was before. Use your new resume as a script for the job interview to explain your experience as it relates to the role they’re hiring for.
Key Takeaways
Brand yourself for the role you want, not the role you have. Your resume and LinkedIn should contain a description of the role you’re aiming for and what skills/experience you bring to the table. If you’re currently a school teacher who wants to become a Communications Manager, then brand yourself as a “Communications leader with expertise in education, project management, and collaboration with people of various backgrounds.” This also makes it easier for recruiters to find you online because if they’re hiring for a Communications Manager, they will not be searching for a school teacher, they’ll be searching for key words related to that specific role.
Apply everywhere. You’re going to get rejected, a lot, it’s part of the process and you’re an underdog so don’t take it personally. Job hunting is a numbers game, always cast a wide net.
Progress is better than perfection. If your goal is to become a Communications Manager for the United States White House but you’re currently a school teacher, then the odds are you won’t immediately get hired by the White House. The goal here is to first break into the industry and work your way up. Accept the role that you want in a company that may not be your first choice because progress is better than perfection. Once you accumulate achievements in this role, other more reputable companies will be willing to take a chance on you.
Networking is everything. This is why human connections are the most powerful-- resumes can score interviews, but relationships build careers because hiring is about trust. If people don’t know you and your experience doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence or trust, they won’t extend an offer and commit to a legally binding employment agreement. To build that trust, use university career offices, professional networking events, internet job sites, forums, and other venues to engage and meet people. Socialization leads to trust which leads to opportunities.

23rd King of Portugal (3rd of Bragança Dynasty):King Pedro II of Portugal, “The Pacific”
Tumblr media
Reign: 12 September 1683 – 9 December 1706 Inauguration: 27 January 1668 Predecessor: Afonso VI
Pedro II (26 April 1648 inn Lisbon – 9 December 1706 in Alcântara), nicknamed "the Pacific", was the King of Portugal from 1683 until his death, previously serving as regent for his brother Afonso VI from 1668 until his own accession. He was the fifth and last child of João IV and Luisa de Guzmán.
Tumblr media
Third son of King João IV and Queen Luisa, he was created Duke of Beja and Lord of the House of Infantado.
Following his father's death, his mother became regent for the new king Afonso VI, Pedro's elder, partially paralyzed, and mentally unstable brother. In 1662 Afonso put away his mother and assumed control of the state. In January 1668, shortly before Spanish recognition of Portugal's restoration of independence, Pedro acquired political ascendancy over his brother and was appointed regent, banishing Afonso to the Azores and, later, Sintra where he died in 1683. Pedro thereupon inherited the throne.
Pedro not only inherited his brother's throne but also wed his former spouse, Queen Marie-Françoise of Savoy (1646–1683). They had one daughter, Isabel Luísa, Princess of Beira (1669–90), who was heir presumptive.
Rule (1668–1706)
Tumblr media
Pedro consolidated Portugal's independence with the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, putting the Portuguese Restoration War, that began in 1640, to an end. He formed an alliance with England and had its decisive support based on marriage clauses that united Charles II of England with his sister Catherine of Bragança in 1661. Portugal ceded Tangier and Bombay as a dowry, and compromised to transfer to the English the majority of the places recovered from the Dutch, to share in half the commerce of cinnamon, to install English families with the same privileges of the Portuguese families in Goa, Cochin, Diu, Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. In exchange, England would give Lisbon military support, protecting Portuguese shipments in the Mediterranean and the coasts of Lisbon and Porto.
The English alliance was decisive in the consolidation of Pedro's leadership. He centralized the monarchy's power and dissolved the excessive strength the nobility had gained after the death of João IV in 1656.
His long tenure was one of important accomplishments. In 1671 he conceded freedom of commerce to the English residing in Portugal and began the establishment of textile manufactures. Isabel Luísa was proclaimed heir presumptive to the throne at the Portuguese Cortes of 1674, Pedro promulgating a letter «on the regencies and tutorships of Kings» to better found the rights of his daughter.
In 1674 his main concern was to improve the defenses of the realm, asking for contributions from the Junta dos Três Estados to the keeping of border garrisons, its paraphernalia and indispensable works in castles and forts. The Cortes didn't attend to totality of his request, but the great apprehension was in the coastal defense. «The shipments from India and Brazil were the main object of greed», says Veríssimo Serrão, «History of Portugal», Volume V, page 213, so that «the Crown was obliged to arm a fleet of 11 boats. (...) The squadron left the Tejo on 21 July 1675, under the command of Pedro Jacques de Magalhães. (...) But the results of such a costly undertaking were none.»
There was a legal impediment to the marriage of his daughter with her cousin, the Duke of Savoy. The so-called «Law of the Cortes of Lamego» prevented the marriage of an heiress with a foreign prince. This alleged document became fundamental law of the Realm in 1640. The Cortes, called on 1 November 1679, proceeded with the derogation. By then the ambassador of Savoy, the Marquis of Ornano, had come to Lisbon to celebrate the marriage by proxy. But it would all turn ineffective to the extent that the embassy of the Duke of Cadaval, sent to Turin in May 1682, did not reach or did not finish the project, by pressures, perhaps, of Louis XIV on the dynasty of Savoy.
In 1683 King Afonso VI and Queen Maria Francisca died. In the court there was a strong «French party», headed by the Duke of Cadaval, the then Count of Vila Maior and by the Viscount of Ponte de Lima, but others favored a closer alliance with Spain. By marrying again, Pedro II chose the sister of the Queen of Spain, daughter of Philipp Wilhelm, Elector Palatine.
Tumblr media
The new queen, Maria Sophia of Neuburg, never influenced political life, maintaining a low profile. The couple had eight children, including the younger João who succeeded his father in 1706 as King João V of Portugal.
Pedro initially supported France and Spain in the War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714), but on 16 May 1703, Portugal and England signed the Methuen Treaty. This trade accord granted mutual commercial privileges for Portuguese wine and English textile traders and would later give England significant influence in the Portuguese economy. This was followed in December 1703 by a military alliance between Portugal, Austria and England for an invasion of Spain. Portuguese and Allied forces, under the command of the Marquis of Minas, captured Madrid in 1706, during the campaign which ended in the Allied defeat at Almansa.
Tumblr media
Pedro obtained papal approval for the elevation of the Bahia bishopric to the category of archbishopric, and the creation of the bishoprics of Olinda and Rio de Janeiro in 1676. In 1677 was created the bishopric of Maranhão, directly subordinated to the archbishopric of Lisbon. In 1686, via decree from the Missionary Regiment, the privileges of the Jesuits in the interior of the Northern region were restricted. There was, however, resistance to the reordering process of the colonial administration, such as the Beckman revolt of 1684 that sublevated the Maranhão colonists against the monopoly of the General Company of Commerce of Grão-Pará and Maranhão and the rise of the Tapuias in the 1680s in various regions of the Northeast.
The discovery of gold in the interior of Caetés, Minas Gerais, in the end of the 17th century, began an age of economic prosperity and administrative changes, with the creation in 1693 of the Captaincy of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and the Intendancy of Minas Gerais in 1702. It also dates from the period the destruction of the Quilombo dos Palmares, Alagoas, in 1695.
The King fixated the basis of his Brazilian policy in two main points: the research of precious metals and stones and the expansion of the borders of the colony to the banks of the Río de la Plata. He sent the Viscount of Barbacena to Brazil with instructions to encourage the mining explorations. The reputation of the Paulistas was such that, urged by Barbacena, Pedro wrote to twelve frontiersmen Piratinganos, and provided them with the "incomparable honor" of a direct interpellation, summoning them to place their employment at the royal service.
Under his reign was created the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, inaugurated on 8 March 1694. The King ceded his seigniorage rights, tribute owed to him, in favor of the better functioning of this institution, that coined the first Brazilian coins for usage within the colony. These coins of 2,000 and 4,000 réis in gold, and 640, 320, 160, 80, 40 and 20 réis in silver amplified and diversified the circulating midst in Brazil.
By the end of Pedro's reign, there were two big problems in Brazil: the dispute over the Colónia do Sacramento that, even though since 1680 recognized as Portuguese territory, was occupied by the Spanish in 1705, and the first conflicts between Paulistas and Emboabas, competing outsiders, including metropolitan people, who arrived in the region of the mines in search of gold.
Tumblr media
Since 1703 the King went through times of deep drowsiness that doctors attributed to a «downflow of "estilicido"», i.e., severe infection of the larynx. On 5 December 1706 he was stricken with a «legitimate pleurisy», that derived a seizure, with which he lost consciousness. The bloodletting from his feet didn't yield results, and on 9 December, the attack became fatal. It is believed nowadays that the King suffered from a liver disease, because the autopsy found «a part of his liver twisted where 25 stones in the gall would be found.»
Tumblr media
He was the last surviving child of João IV of Portugal, and is buried in Lisbon, in the Pantheon of the Braganças.
Tumblr media
Historian Veríssimo Serrão says of The King in his «History of Portugal», Volume IV, page 233:
«A coeval historian extolled his physical qualities, skilled both in arms as in horseback bullfighting, having an agility and strength that predisposed him to the exercise of violence. It was during his time that the Palace of Salvaterra de Magos became again the favorite place of court, Pedro II settling there in the months of January and February, to devote himself to the sport of riding. (...) Master of a great memory, the monarch never refused an audience to whoever asked it, was it day or night, delighted to listen to others and to discuss the issues in the smallest details. This quality was (...) one of his biggest flaws, because he always wanted to hear the opinion of advisers, fact that led to him dilating the problems. His reign had as a great aim to rebuild the country, shaken by the wars of Restoration. Since 1693 he could dispose of the gold from Brazil that gave to this work the decisive push that Portugal needed. But the participation in the Wars of the Spanish Succession went against the national interests. (...)».
He was tall, well proportioned, with dark eyes and dark hair.
He earned the nickname “the Pacific”, because peace was made with Spain during his regency, in 1668.

Present situation and Prospect of dry screw vacuum pump
At present, the development of various vacuum pumps is more and more affected by vacuum applications. The general vacuum system can not meet the requirements of clean and oil-free corrosion resistance. Therefore, in recent years, the market demand of dry vacuum pumps is very large, and the vacuum products have been updated. A large number of oil-free vacuum systems have been replaced by oil-free and clean vacuum systems. Almost every large vacuum company abroad produces various types of dry vacuum pumps. Screw vacuum pump is a non-contact dry pump. It is an ideal pump in the early 1990s. It occupies the market with its advantages of wide pumping speed range, simple and compact structure, no friction of air extraction chamber components, long service life, low energy consumption and no oil pollution. However, most of its manufacturing technology is mastered by foreign countries. China is still in its infancy, and the market has great demand for dry pumps At present, the development of various vacuum pumps is more and more affected by vacuum applications. It occupies the market with its advantages of wide pumping speed range, simple and compact structure, no friction of air extraction chamber components, long service life, low energy consumption and no oil pollution. However, most of its manufacturing technology is mastered by foreign countries. China is still in its infancy, and the market has great demand for dry pumps Present situation of dry vacuum pump Due to its superior performance, dry screw vacuum pump has become the preferred vacuum equipment in microelectronics, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, precision processing and other industries in Europe, America and Japan. On the basis of screw compressor, Japan has long developed the multi head rotor profile of vacuum pump and put it into the market. Several German vacuum equipment companies have also gradually developed equal pitch and variable pitch rotor profiles, and have done a lot of research on rotor and body cooling. Key technical problems of screw pump: Structure of dry screw pump: The structure of screw vacuum pump is mainly composed of screw rotor, shell, cooling circulation and sealing materials. The transmission shaft is connected with the driving rotor and drives the driven rotor to rotate through the synchronous gear. A cooling water channel is opened on the shell to cool the temperature of the rotor and exhaust port. The synchronous gear and bearing are lubricated with oil. The interior of the bearing and housing is sealed by seals to achieve the effect of oil-free. The structure of dry screw vacuum pump is similar to that of oil-free screw compressor in sealing and lubrication. Generally, mechanical seals are used at the exhaust end of vacuum pumps, and double lip seals are commonly used at the inlet side. In terms of transmission mode, at present, the common is direct connected motor, which is connected with rotor by coupling, and very few are driven by belt or chain. Due to no internal compression process, the exhaust temperature of equal pitch screw pump is very high (about 110 ℃). If the cooling effect is not good, it will cause deformation of rotor and casing and affect the sobbing effect. Therefore, cooling the casing is an essential link, and water cooling is a common method. Cooling water is supplied to the outer side of the bearing in the casing body to cool the casing and then the rotor. Laibao company applies water cooling inside the rotor to increase the service life of the rotor and achieve good cooling effect. However, this kind of structural design (two-stage type) requires certain technical and processing level support. Sometimes the cooling effect cannot be achieved by water cooling, so the cooling gas (mostly nitrogen) is usually passed near the rotor at the exhaust end. Now the mainstream screw vacuum pump abroad adopts this method. This method has several advantages: it can cool the casing of the rotor and reduce the exhaust temperature; Second, when the gas contains particles, it can prevent particle deposition or chemical reaction from causing explosion. Overview of dry vacuum pumps produced by domestic and foreign companies (1) KDP and SDV series screw vacuum pumps of Taher company. Taher acquired Kenny vacuum. Kenny is a professional manufacturer of vacuum equipment in the United States with a long history. It is also in a world position in the manufacturing of screw vacuum pump. KDP series is a vacuum pump with equal pitch rotor, and SDV is a variable pitch screw pump. Both are water-cooling systems, and air cooling systems can be selected. SDV is an improvement based on KDP. The variable pitch screw pump can realize the internal compression of gas, reduce the exhaust temperature, and save 30% energy compared with the same pitch. Niflon coating is adopted on the rotor, i.e. the layer is Ni and the second layer is PFA. Even if the PFA is worn, the Ni layer can achieve corrosion protection, and kalrez perfluorinated rubber sealing ring is adopted. SDV series is the screw vacuum pump mainly promoted by Kenny company. (2) The srewtine series screw oil-free compression vacuum pump officially launched by LeiBao company in Germany at the end of 2002 is a dry pump specially designed for industrial applications (non semiconductor applications). It is a new design and is specially used to solve the difficult vacuum problems in industrial applications. Such as dust, tar, etc. The pump also adopts variable pitch rotor with internal compression process. There is no internal valve in the pump cavity, so it has strong resistance to dust and tar. The screw of the pump adopts internal hollow cooling, which can reduce the rotor temperature and thermal deformation, so the service life of the screw is prolonged. (3) Cobran series screw pump of Germany puxu company is a vacuum pump for manufacturing process, which is especially suitable for various process flows in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Puxu is one of the suppliers of vacuum pumps, blowers and compressors in the world. The quality of vacuum pumps is high. Compared with other manufacturers, puxu has a high market share in Europe and the price is expensive. (4) VSA / VSB series of Richler, Germany. VSA is an equal pitch rotor with good market evaluation and stable performance. VSB Series event pitch rotor design (non-linear tooth shape design), like other companies, changes the power consumption and exhaust temperature of the pump through internal compression. Without two-stage compression and intermediate cooling, a single stage can achieve very high vacuum. The sealing element is improved. The static sealing element is preferably PTFE or the sealing element added with PTFE. The dynamic sealing element uses double sealing lips on the suction side of the vacuum pump, and a simple sealing ring with gas overflow prevention is used on the exhaust side of the vacuum pump to prevent solid substances from entering the pump. (5) Japanese manufacturers. Screw vacuum pumps are widely used in Japan, and are widely used in semiconductor and LCD industries. Yoshimura soldiers of Dahuang Co., Ltd. applied for patents on single head first-class screw rotors for a long time and made in-depth research on rotors. Hitachi also made research on screw pump in the early stage. 3. Research prospect: The domestic research of dry screw vacuum pump is still in the initial stage, and many technical problems have not been solved. For example, the rotor coating anti-corrosion technology, reducing the temperature of the exhaust port and increasing the utilization rate of the rotor area are still very difficult. When extracting some active gas, due to the high exhaust temperature, it also needs to be considered in the design. When used in the occasion where the volume needs to be controlled, how to reduce noise should also become the research direction, However, its superior performance determines that it will dominate the vacuum equipment industry, just like the dominant position of screw compressor in the industry.

Boult Audio ProBass Curve Review
Tumblr media
Boult Audio is a little-known company offering its audio products in the Indian market, including a wide range of wired and wireless earphones, headphones and even soundbars. The Twin Pods, which we tested a while back, turned out to be a pretty decent budget alternative to Apple’s AirPods, especially for the market price. Today, we’ll be testing the Boult Audio ProBass Curve, which is a pair of wireless neckband earphones that packs in a lot of features at a pocket-friendly online price of just Rs. 1,499.
This is a follow-up model to the original Curve, which has now been discontinued according to the company. The new model, which has ‘ProBass’ added to its name, looks physically identical to the older one. It gets an upgrade with Bluetooth 5 (versus 4.2) but doesn’t have a vibration motor in the neckband, which is probably for the best – more on that later. Should this be your next budget pick? Let’s find out.
Boult Audio ProBass Curve design and specifications
The packaging for the Boult Audio ProBass Curve isn’t great, but once you get to the actual earphones, the finish is better. Build quality is still strictly average, with plastics that feel a bit cheap. It’s available in different colours, such as a Red/Black, Red/Blue or even an all-black trim. The neckband is very flexible and snaps back into shape even when twisted and turned to extreme angles. The earbuds are attached to wires that run along the length of the neckband, and you can adjust the amount of slack.
The ends of the neckband terminate in two plastic modules, which hold the battery and the playback controls. The left module has a flap-covered Micro-USB port, the microphone, battery LED, and three buttons for power and volume control. As we stated earlier, the newer model doesn’t have a vibration motor for alerts, which the older Curve model did.
Tumblr media
The Boult Audio Pro Bass Curve looks good and doesn’t weigh much
The earbuds themselves are pretty light thanks to their plastic housings, and they have a low profile so they don’t stick out of your ears. The silicone ear tips are comfortable and offer good isolation from ambient noise. You get two extra pairs of ear tips in different sizes, in addition to the pair that’s pre-attached. There’s also a Micro-USB charging cable in the box.
The outer sides of the earbuds are magnetic, so you can snap them together when wearing the band around your neck. These magnets are only to keep the earbuds in place, and there’s no extra functionality such as pausing your music.
The drivers in the ProBass Curve feature neodymium magnets. This headset is powered by Qualcomm’s CSR8635 Bluetooth chip which uses Bluetooth 5 for connecting to your source devices. It supports Qualcomm’s cVc noise cancellation technology for voice calls, but only the common SBC Bluetooth profile for streaming audio.
The chip supports multipoint connection, and so the ProBass Curve can be paired with two devices at once. However, there were times when the earphones would refuse to connect to the second device. The company hasn’t detailed the frequency range that the drivers can handle. The device itself is IPX5 rated for moisture and sweat resistance, which is handy.
Boult Audio ProBass Curve performance and battery life
The ProBass Curve has a very snug fit, which is something we immediately liked. We barely felt the earbuds in our ears, and the neckband is extremely light too, making this headset comfortable to wear even for long listening stretches. The vibration motor on the previous model was very harsh and rattled the band uncomfortably every time we switched it on or when we got calls and messages, so it’s a good thing it’s been dropped from the ProBass model. You’ll hear voice prompts through the headset when a device connects to it and when you switch it on or off.
Tumblr media
The controls on the Boult Audio ProBass Curve are easy to reach and use
The Boult ProBass Curve is tuned to deliver punchy bass, and this is one area in which it delivers very well. Tracks such as Lock Doh by Giggs feature tight and controlled bass, with a satisfying kick. There’s no distortion even at full volume. Vocals are rich and always sound like they’re coming from front and centre. The mid range in general is decent, but complex tracks such as Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be too much for the Curve to handle, as the highs and the low end overpower the many background instruments. Highs also sounded a bit screechy at full volume in this track, although this isn’t a consistent issue with others.
The older Curve model, which we have some experience using, lost connectivity intermittently, which caused audio to cut out every few minutes. It’s hard to tell what caused this, but we observed it when using the device paired with multiple different devices including a OnePlus 7 Pro (Review) and an iPhone XR (Review), and even a MacBook Air. Thankfully, we didn’t face this issue with the new ProBass Curve model. We also found it to have good range, and we didn’t face any connection issues even with small obstacles between the headset and our source device.
One thing we noticed was that in order to get good bass response, we needed to fiddle around a bit with the earbuds till we got a good seal. Simply popping them in our ears didn’t guarantee a good fit. The controls are easy to find and master. A long-press on the volume up button skips the track while the same gesture on the volume down button takes you to the previous track. However, since the power button doubles up as the play/pause button, there’s no way to activate your phone’s voice assistant.
Tumblr media
The earbuds on the Boult Audio ProBass Curve offer good passive noise isolation
The ProBass Curve automatically connects to the last paired device it detects. For a new connection, you’ll need to hold the power button for more than five seconds, till the light alternates between blue and red.
Call quality is pretty good too. We didn’t have any audio issues and neither did the person on the other end, even when we were in noisy environments such as a train station. The passive noise isolation from the ear tips is very good, but audio does leak a bit if you push the volume beyond 80 percent.
Boult Audio promises battery life of 8-10 hours on a single charge for the ProBass Curve, and in our usage, we easily managed to get around 8 to 8.5 hours on average. Charging the battery using a laptop’s USB port took a little over two hours. The power LED is the only indication of the amount of charge left. It blinks blue when the level is above 20 percent, and red when it dips below that.
Verdict
The Boult Audio ProBass Curve replaces the outgoing model at the same online price of about Rs. 1,499, though we’ve seen it sell for a little less at times. For that price, this device has a lot going for it. It’s sweatproof, light and comfortable, and has good battery life. The mids are a little weak, but it produces clean and punchy bass. It’s certainly not the most premium-looking device and it doesn’t feel like one either. Finally, the eartips need a bit of fiddling before you can get a good seal.
Overall, if you’re looking for a light, inexpensive pair of Bluetooth earphones with good bass and moisture resistance, then the Boult Audio ProBass Curve is a decent pick.

Snowbarry AU Part 2
Title: A Ballad for Ms Snow | Read Part 1 | Read on FF.net
Description:  Snowbarry Club AU. Caitlin is the sad DJ who's saving up money for her Master education. Barry is a fresh graduate who celebrates the night with his friends. What happens when he takes a bet to seduce her? Multi-chapter. Without superpowers.
Chapter 2 - Secrets Revealed
Barry's head swam as he downed the third drink. The music had eased to a lazy tune. The few dancers that pirouetted on the floor didn't even follow the rhythm. The club's energy had shifted to the tables, to casual chatting and flirting and kissing.
Caitlin sat with her legs tucked underneath her—her heels lay on the floor somewhere—while he had stretched his over the sound system. She held her glass with precision and cringed each time the alcohol touched her lips.
She wasn't much of a drinker, Barry deduced.
The colored lights illuminated her eyes and her teeth—whenever she shared a smile.
At first, they chatted about his graduation and his passion for forensics science. As with all things he loved, he spoke in a frenzy. It was crazy, he thought. He'd only met her minutes ago and it was like he was trying to compress the story of his life into a short summary—scary details excluded. (Though a voice deep inside told him she wouldn't mind the scary details. She would understand.)
The truth was, he liked her reactions.
She didn't just nod and smile. No. Her eyes and mouth widened with proper shock and surprise as he told her about his hearing accident.
"No!" she said, leaning forward.
"Exactly!" Barry returned the emotion. "I mean, out of all the places I could have been when the speaker system went off, I happened to be right in front of it. I couldn't hear anything for an entire day! At least, Iris enjoyed teasing me."
She laughed and shook her head. Then, when her eyes sobered, she said: "You had reversible hearing loss."
Barry stopped over his drink. "I had what?" he asked.
"Reversible hearing loss," she repeated, blushing. When she saw his blank expression she scurried to explain: "It's a mechanism your ears use to adapt to the loud noise and protect you from real damage."
He stared at her in awe. "Wow that's so... educated of you," he remarked.
She shrugged, turning her attention to her drink. "I read," she said.
Barry nodded, though he didn't quite buy her excuse. He realized she'd never told him about her major. She had skipped the question when he asked her by turning the focus to him.
In fact, each time he tried to center the conversation on her, she shrank inwards and guarded her expression. She cut her answers short. So far, he'd only managed to learn about her friendship with Cisco—he was the one who had recommended her for the job and had also tutored her on the art of mixing music. She hadn't always been as proficient as she was now—Barry imagined her struggling with the buttons, showing extreme caution. A smile tugged on his lips.
He stared at her profile-the way her intelligent eyes caught the light, the way her hair brushed her skin and her lips balanced each other.
"You never told me what you specialize at," he commented.
She turned her face and raised her eyebrows, as if she hadn't heard him. It was kind of cute, Barry thought. She actually believed she could fool him. The innocent looks were basically his expertise. He smiled, deciding to humor her anyway.
"Your major. You never told me what you're studying," he repeated.
This time, her hesitation was visible.
"I promise I won't feel intimidated," Barry said, raising his palm.
Her eyes squeezed into a smile. Barry's gaze caught on her dimples for a moment.
"I'm a biomedical engineer and geneticist," she said. Barry shaped a silent wow with his lips, his eyes widening.
"You said you wouldn't feel intimidated," Caitlin reminded him, pointing with her finger.
Barry closed his mouth. "I'm not—I mean I'm not going to pretend I understand what that is about, but you... you are a scientist-aside from a DJ, which I-I think is-is an interesting combination," he struggled to find the right words, to not sound like an idiot and at the same time compliment her mind.
A smile pressed into her left cheek. "You are not so bad yourself, Mr. Allen. A pizza delivery guy who's secretly a CSI detective."
He accepted her praise with a nod. "Yeah, people tend to think I'm fast at delivery."
Caitlin tilted her head.
"And that sounded not how I intended it to," he scurried to add.
Caitlin laughed.
Quiet settled as if carried by a breeze. Caitlin focused on her drink and switched the song.
5,4,3,2,1… the lyrics started. The voice was sweet melancholy and inner complaint.
5,4,3,2,1...
He holds the guuun... against my heart.
I close my eyes... and I'm... I'm dead.
He saw her close her eyes and bite her lip.
His eyebrows pulled together in a furrow as he watched the pain battle with her expression. It didn't take a genius to fill in the pieces. The song hymned romantic love and how it could murder you.
"What happened?" he asked quietly.
She opened her eyes and stared. Her gaze turned cold and distant.
"I... lost my fiancé," she answered, her voice firm. "We both studied at the same college until... there was an explosion nine months ago. Basically, I lost a year of my studies and the man I loved... died." Her voice dried at the last word.
Barry sat up straight and looked at her, shaking his head. "I'm so sorry," he muttered.
"Yeah, me too," she said. "So, since you asked why I don't smile too much, this blank expression feels kind of the way to go."
Barry nodded. Her words connected strangely with him. He'd made a similar pact with himself. Only different. He couldn't vindicate his father. But still, hoping felt like the only way to go. The muscles around her mouth twitched, as if she was restisting emotion.
"Hey," Barry said. Before he realized it, he was reaching out and placing his hand on her shoulder. Caitlin jumped slightly. He pulled away, curling his fingers into his palm, but still held her gaze.
"Everything is going to be okay. You will be fine," he told her. He didn't know how he'd ended up offering support to this girl—this girl he barely knew—but it was almost an automatic reaction. Somehow he knew that she could survive this and he needed to tell her.
He almost expected her to protest, to shake him off, but Caitlin's eyes stretched wide as a tiny speck of hope glimmered in the depths of her irises. She was stunning. She nodded.
Barry tried to clear his head and smiled. He decided he wouldn't leave this place if he didn't see her smile again.
"I have an idea," he started.
Caitlin squinted and leaned a little back. "What?" "Let's play a drinking game," he suggested. "We'll both describe our worst experiences of a certain type and if yours are worse than mine, you'll take a shot, or the opposite." He grinned with pride.
Caitlin's expression shrank in hesitation. "I'm not sure…"
"Oh come on. You deserve to have some fun," Barry pressed.
Caitlin's eyes opened in protest as she resisted a smile. "I have never done a drinking game!" she confessed. "I'm not even sure I will be any fun!"
#
One hour later…
"Worst birthday party ever!" Caitlin shouted as soon as she slammed her glass down. Cisco gave her a look, then leaned toward Barry and covered his mouth with his palm. "Who is she and what have you done with Caitlin?" he demanded.
Barry laughed and lifted his shoulders, shaking his head. "Okay, me first!" Caitlin said. "It was the year my father died. He was the only one that remembered my birthday, so that year nobody was home to celebrate. I made a cake on my own, which turned out to be salty. Much like me." She snorted and snickered.
"That sucks, but not as much as my worst birthday," Barry pointed out. "I was eleven years old and I visited my father in prison for the first time, but they wouldn't let me see him, because they considered him a a threat to me, after he was accused with murdering my mother."
He frowned as soon as he uttered the words. He was sure this was something he wasn't supposed to say.
Caitlin pouted. "Fine, you win!"
Barry cheered and downed another shot.
"How about this?" he pointed a finger. "Worst pick-up line you've ever received," he suggested.
Caitlin wrinkled her nose and twisted her lips. "Hey Snow, I bet I can make you fall for me," she said, imitating a male voice.
Barry folded in half laughing.
"What did you tell them?" he wondered.
"Something about how I could freeze them to death instead. Which was pretty mean, but he deserved it." She almost looked like she was muttering to herself, which gave Barry another round of laughs.
As he straightened up, he saw Julian approach. His smile faded. Julian stopped next to him and studied Caitlin. Barry tensed.
"You were supposed to buy her one drink, Allen. Not get her wasted," Julian remarked.
It took a moment for his words to set in and create their disaster. Caitlin was too drunk to react to them. But the same didn't apply to the barman.
Barry met Cisco's grim eyes. His hands had frozen over the cocktail he was brewing. Barry opened his mouth and raised his palm in panic.
"Hey let me explain-"
"I thought I had made it clear to you that Caitlin wasn't in a place to date, much less be played with," Cisco said through tight lips.
"I didn't intend to-" Barry tried to explain.
"I think you need to leave now," Cisco cut him off. His voice stayed within civilized volumes, but somehow it sounded more threatening than direct yelling.
Barry got the message. He nodded and turned to leave.
"Thanks, Julian," he muttered as he swiped past him toward the exit. The other man had opened up his eyes, as if he'd just realized his mistake.
Too late, Barry thought, more to himself than to his colleague. He felt like the worst jerk in the world.
And he deserved it.
#
The next day he returned around the afternoon. The sky had opened up and was pouring on the earth, so he'd brought an umbrella with him.
He walked several times around the block, ignoring the chill of the rain, until he built up the courage to go inside.
The club worked as a pub during day time. Quiet background tones had replaced the echoing music. The air smelled of spicy perfumes and smoke. But mostly, it was dry, which was a nice change from the wet weather.
Barry shuffled toward the bar, closing his umbrella and slicking back his hair.
"Oh, you again," Cisco muttered nonchalantly once he noticed him. He was tasting a lollipop.
"Hi," Barry said breathily, pretending not to notice his attitude. "Is Caitlin here?"
Cisco pulled the lollipop out of his mouth. "She is Dr. Snow to you," he corrected him, his gaze a sharp knife.
Barry winced and waved his head. "Fine. Is Dr. Snow here?"
Just as he asked, he saw her coming from the bathroom. His heart hammered and his breath caught. Her gaze met his, cold and impassive, but she didn't stop in her tracks. His eyes travelled up and down her body on their own initiative. She wore a black tank top and grey trousers, while a stylish silver clip held her hair on one side.
"Hi," Barry said in a clipped voice, as soon as she came within earshot.
Caitlin turned her side to him and pressed her body against the counter, completely ignoring him.
"Give me a jean tonic, Cisco. With extra ice."
"Right away, m'am," he replied and instantly pulled a bottle.
Barry had never wanted the earth to swallow him as much as he wanted it at that moment. Her direct indifference was like an icicle cutting through his chest. He leaned on the bar, scraffing the surface with his finger. He struggled to find a creative way to start speaking. The seconds passed, and the silence took giant dimensions, and Cisco slipped the drink toward Caitlin.
"Hey, listen," Barry started, pivoting. Caitlin picked up the glass and took a sip. "Yesterday night-"
She whirled. Barry only caught a glimpse of her staggering glare before she tossed her drink right into his face.
He closed his eyes and pressed his lips. When he looked again, she was gone. Cisco stared at him with shock written all over his face, before he raised his eyebrows and returned to his work.
Barry wiped the water off his face with the back of his sleeve and turned around. The door of the club closed after a half hint of Caitlin. He ran after her.
The rain soaked him to the bone. It was the kind of rain that fell down in cascades, creating rivers down the road. Barry searched in the blurred view until he noticed a grey-coated figure heading to the parking lot, holding a black umbrella.
"Caitlin!" he shouted.
She didn't slow her pace.
He started running. He thought he would probably catch a cold later, but he ran regardless. He only wished he could run faster.
He stopped her just as she was about to enter her car, gently pulling her shoulder. Caitlin shook his hand off and pierced him with her eyes.
Water spilled down his face and lips. Her umbrella looked particularly appealing to him as cold had started to set in his bones, but something told him she wouldn't exactly welcome him under it.
"Caitlin, listen please," he begged her. "Yesterday-"
"Yesterday what, Barry?" she cut him off. "You took advantage of my emotional state to have a laugh with your friends? You used me to boost your stupid ego? You insisted on getting me drunk so you could then exploit me further?"
"No-NO! Please, I swear I only insisted on getting drunk, because we both needed it. I never intended to take it any further than that," he promised.
She frowned. "You don't have the slightest clue about what I need," she said through gritted teeth. "What I need is for you to get out of my sight. I have enough troubles in my life as it is. I don't need you to make fun of it," she spat, pain and anger painted all over her eyes. Barry's heart sank as she opened the door of her car.
He stood alone in the shower as her headlights shone in the dusk. He watched them fade away.
Lightning split the sky. Suddenly he wished it would strike him.

Gravity SNH48
lyrics
gravity
Obviously approaching soon
But I feel there is a long distance
Invisible tacit understanding but still breathing freely
We leaned on the bus seat and felt the resonance of gravity
Suddenly, the atmosphere has become speechless
No matter how many times I fall in love
Are still not used to this way
Our pace will become
More consistent
Gravity holds me and you
The acceleration is only for meeting here
Even if you ca n’t see it
Feel us connected
I resonate with you in gravity
Even if this story has not ended
One day they will meet each other.
More tacit
The dark clouds outside the window are very dense
I can't see myself in the dark
Use your ears to listen to your gentle voice
Suddenly accelerated figure
But fled in panic
My heart has long caused ripples

Quitting Quayside: what’s next for Sidewalk Labs and investment in smart cities of the future?
[Editor’s note: Originally published on AEC Labs]
After wending its master site development plan through three years of revisions spurred by public opposition and data privacy concerns, project approvals for Sidewalk Labs’ Quayside “smart city” project in Toronto were set for a June 25 vote. But recently, in an open post on Medium, CEO Dan Doctoroff announced that Sidewalk is dropping the project. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the news came as a surprise, given the deep pockets and recent momentum behind the project.
Quayside was meant to be a 12-acre development that would be the gateway to a much larger 800-acre project on Toronto’s industrial lakefront. Featuring cross-laminated timber (CLB) buildings, subterranean e-commerce delivery access points, and, ultimately, a “data trust” to help planners and technocrats improve the Quayside experience for residents and businesses alike, Sidewalk’s mission for the development was to “integrate physical, digital, and policy innovations to produce dramatic improvements in quality of life and generate significant economic opportunity” for Torontonians.
In data we (don’t) trust?
But three years ago Sidewalk’s initial plans for Quayside were met with immediate criticism from local community groups and data privacy activists. They voiced concerned with, among other things, the public subsidies Toronto was dangling for the development arm of one of the biggest and most powerful companies in history, as well as many perceived “surveillance capitalism” technologies in Sidewalk’s plans.
The backlash to Amazon’s HQ2 initiative in Long Island City, which led the retailer to pull out of the project early last year, led to further speculation that something similar could happen to Quayside. And despite scaling back its plans and performing heavy engagement with the public a “Block Sidewalk” citizens group sprung up to fight the development. Yet after Sidewalk seemed to successfully navigate the post-Amazon HQ2 landscape, it appeared Quayside was back on track, albeit with a smaller footprint and a commitment to data privacy and transparency.
But, as Doctoroff wrote, “unprecedented economic uncertainty has set in around the world and in the Toronto real estate market, [and] it has become too difficult to make the 12-acre project financially viable without sacrificing core parts of the plan we had developed together with Waterfront Toronto to build a truly inclusive, sustainable community.” Whether that’s entirely the case or if activists should claim victory over Sidewalk’s vision at this point isn’t quite clear.
Shifting focus to infrastructure
This is because Sidewalk isn’t giving up altogether on its mission to improve the urban experience. Its infrastructure investment arm, Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP), raised $400M from equity investors last fall (including Alphabet). It placed some of the proceeds into its first (and to date only) investment: an AI-powered robotics startup called AMP which automates the processing and sorting of recyclable material in municipal, construction, and demolition waste, increasing the volume of valuable recovered wastes from conveyor belts in its customers’ facilities.
SIP is structured not as a fund but as a “technology-enabled infrastructure” investment company. It’s targeting investment opportunities primarily in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico that seek a minimum of $100M in equity, specifically identifying autonomous vehicles, distributed renewable energy systems, real-time controls, robotics, and machine learning as the types of technologies it will underwrite across a range of infrastructure market sectors.
In describing SIP’s value proposition, Sidewalk Labs’ master development plan for Quayside (MDIP) noted that “[b]ecause the risk-return profile of advanced infrastructure systems differs from traditional infrastructure investments, traditional infrastructure investors may shy away from the investment. . . . Historically, infrastructure as an asset class has been resistant to innovation, resulting in many traditional infrastructure investors mispricing the risks of technology disruption and failing to capitalize on new infrastructure opportunities enabled by technology.”
By eventually deploying its portfolio within larger “smart city” projects from Sidewalk Labs, SIP could close the funding gap for these systems by “reduc[ing] certain risks associated with the new systems, such as absorption risk (i.e. the risk that buyers or renters might be more hesitant to move to a unit with an advanced system). This could attract investors who might not otherwise participate,” the MDIP concluded.
From there, “SIP could then structure a transaction that bundles debt financing negotiated with lenders with equity financing offered by SIP for multiple advanced systems.” This should lower overall project costs and increase the depth and breadth of RFP respondents (by eliminating the requirement that those respondents provide their own capital). If the last year in the infrastructure industry is any indication, with large global players declining to invest additional equity, and many worthy projects hurting for qualified bidders, this is a good idea.
So (un)sexy it hurts
Its investment thesis might not sound as sexy as a smart city of the future (waste management systems, anyone?). But SIP could indeed be well-positioned if future COVID-related stimulus includes funds for infrastructure. And its focus on technologies and companies more resilient in the age of COVID than, say, toll roads or airports, could prove to be shrewd.
For example, SIP will also seek to partner with governments in evaluating opportunities for public-private partnerships (P3s). These will likely increase dramatically as state and local budgets continue to creak because of COVID. And, if the Trump administration ultimately passes infrastructure stimulus, it will likely seek to leverage a relatively small direct federal investment with private funds.
As for Sidewalk Labs, the company plans to use the lessons it learned on Quayside to continue to launch and invest in other forward-thinking, technology-driven, urban-focused companies like Replica (an urban planning tool that uses de-identified location data, launched in Chicago and Kansas City) and Cityblock (a community-based healthcare network). And it will continue to develop the “generative” urban planning and “electrified neighborhood” software tools that it previously launched to support Quayside.
The search for deeper meaning
It’s been a rough few years for mega-projects in the P3 space. But there is still a lot of opportunity out there to help governments bridge the infrastructure funding gap (which stands at $1.5T just to maintain what we’ve got by 2030). And the new technologies that Sidewalk worked on in connection with Toronto could unleash spate of innovation in sectors that are mostly unremarked upon. It’s disappointing that Quayside won’t happen. But its failure to launch could end up being a good thing for the infrastructure market generally if SIP is able to push some of its ideas ahead. That wouldn’t be a bad surprise at all.
