I’m getting overwhelmed again

You mentioned that developers leave studio's for numerous reasons. How do some devs stay there for very long periods then (think 10+years)?

Most people choose to leave a job when their needs aren't being met for some reason. These reasons tend to fall into one of four broad categories:

Personal reasons, e.g. caring for sick family, having children, pursuing a lifelong dream, wants to move out of the city/state/country, etc.

Compensation/Career advancement reasons, e.g. being passed over or given no opportunities for promotion, pay does not rise with cost of living, pay/job title is not commensurate with the worker's responsibilities, etc.

Job satisfaction reasons, e.g. hostile work environment, burnout, boredom with the role/responsibilities/project, does not get along with other team members, friends on the team are also leaving, etc.

Job security reasons, e.g. the company/team/leadership/project is not doing well

We'll set aside personal reasons here because those aren't really something that the working environment can really affect too much. These other three categories - compensation, satisfaction, and security - are all things that the employer can affect. As long as a worker feels like their needs are being met - i.e. they have enough job satisfaction, compensation, and security to feel comfortable - they are quite likely to stay at their job. As long as that situation remains true for 10+ years, some employees will choose to stay there for 10+ years.

Amusingly enough, my current studio employer collaborates with other studios on a well-known AAA franchise. I actually used to work at one of these other studios 10+ years ago. I was reunited in cross-studio meetings with some of my former coworkers who are still at that same studio 10+ years later. It does happen!

So, what to do?

You see, it isn't easy to just step into a new job in Japan. Even when you are able to speak the language, if you don't have the test score to prove it, forget about it. I searched on Glassdoor for a few weeks as time ticked away on me. I tried one part time opportunity where we had to check the validity of map hits which was frustratingly difficult to satisfy them and they never coached what mistakes we were making. Gave up on that.

Finally it was suggested to me to take to Facebook to appeal. A remote job from Canada or something here that can work with my experience as a customer support agent. I had hoped that someone from my support days would remember I did a good job and have a lead, but nothing. One guy smartly suggested trying Trailhead to learn Salesforce for a future job potential, but I needed money soon. Finally the first person who ever gave me a job, all those years back in a kitchen, had an idea. Let's have a video meeting.

What is it? Does he have a connection here? A remote job for Canada that could be done from Japan? Well, we'll set up a meeting and find out I guess.

I hope it will be good.

Holy crap, I didn't think Biden would be able to get the Climate Corps established without Congress. This is SUCH fantastic news.

"After being thwarted by Congress, President Joe Biden will use his executive authority to create a New Deal-style American Climate Corps that will serve as a major green jobs training program.

In an announcement Wednesday, the White House said the program will employ more than 20,000 young adults who will build trails, plant trees, help install solar panels and do other work to boost conservation and help prevent catastrophic wildfires.

The climate corps had been proposed in early versions of the sweeping climate law approved last year but was jettisoned amid strong opposition from Republicans and concerns about cost.

Democrats and environmental advocacy groups never gave up on the plan and pushed Biden in recent weeks to issue an executive order authorizing what the White House now calls the American Climate Corps.

“After years of demonstrating and fighting for a Climate Corps, we turned a generational rallying cry into a real jobs program that will put a new generation to work stopping the climate crisis,” said Varshini Prakash, executive director of the Sunrise Movement, an environmental group that has led the push for a climate corps.

With the new corps “and the historic climate investments won by our broader movement, the path towards a Green New Deal is beginning to become visible,” Prakash said...

Lawmakers Weigh In

More than 50 Democratic lawmakers, including Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, had also encouraged Biden to create a climate corps, saying in a letter on Monday that “the climate crisis demands a whole-of-government response at an unprecedented scale.”

The lawmakers cited deadly heat waves in the Southwest and across the nation, as well as dangerous floods in New England and devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, among recent examples of climate-related disasters.

Democrats called creation of the climate corps “historic” and the first step toward fulfilling the vision of the Green New Deal.

“Today President Biden listened to the (environmental) movement, and he delivered with an American Climate Corps,” a beaming Markey said at a celebratory news conference outside the Capitol.

“We are starting to turn the green dream into a green reality,” added Ocasio-Cortez, who co-sponsored the Green New Deal legislation with Markey four years ago.

“You all are changing the world,” she told young activists.

Program Details and Grant Deadlines

The initiative will provide job training and service opportunities to work on a wide range of projects, including restoring coastal wetlands to protect communities from storm surges and flooding; clean energy projects such as wind and solar power; managing forests to prevent catastrophic wildfires; and energy efficient solutions to cut energy bills for consumers, the White House said.

Creation of the climate corps comes as the Environmental Protection Agency launches a $4.6 billion grant competition for states, municipalities and tribes to cut climate pollution and advance environmental justice. The Climate Pollution Reduction Grants are funded by the 2022 climate law and are intended to drive community-driven solutions to slow climate change.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the grants will help “communities so they can chart their own paths toward the clean energy future.”

The deadline for states and municipalities to apply is April 1, with grants expected in late 2024. Tribes and territories must apply by May 1, with grants expected by early 2025."

When you first walk into my apartment it smells like this tart like smell. Its weird cause, its the chemical reaction that this neutralizer had to the paint peeler i am using, I have burned some incense to rectify the problem..

So its 12:13am and I have just returned back from the movie, and other then the entire cast of The Best Man being in it, I enjoyed it. So now I am chilling eating a butterscotch krimpet cake by TastyKake, my fingers still a little sticky with pineapple juice from the fruit I stopped by and picked up after the movie.

On my list of todo's this evening other then doing this journal entry which I really hope is going to help me find my writing voice again. I have to finish my application to the white institute, which I think i have pretty complete. I think I am as about happy with it as I can get with it. I am happy this time I actually completed it. YEAH.

Anastasia is waiting patiently at my left looking for an opportunity to jump on my lap. And since I am going to be on the computer for a bit I am setting up some of my online friends, including johncamlive, christiangrantham.com, keithcam, and Pecsjockcam to whom even though I think he hates my guts I still watch religiously. I am an obsessive voyeur, but I guess its more interesting living other peoples lives then your own. (mental note: go back and make the links live of those site you mentioned)

Anyway, I am stuffing myself of this kake you would think I have never seen food before, and its not like my waist line need it. UGH. I have to send jeff an email about the gym and his being my personal trainer and all. I really need to do some exercise other then pointing and clicking the mouse and tickling the keyboard. Too bad you can't get exercise thru your fingers cause if you did I would be so in shape :)

I have so much going on I don't know what to write about and what not to, I guess i should just continue stream of conscious until i am pooped and will do something else. I wish I could say i was horny, but I am not I have really had NO sex drive lately I don't know what that is all about, maybe its a good thing. There is one guy i have sex drive for and thats Tony the guy I am dating.... He seems to be the only one who can get me horny or get me thinkin' about sex. Which is upsetting to me cause then it feels like I am committing more to him and I done sort of want too. (mental note, put picture of Tony in journal)(mental note: begin researching new web host)

Yeah but anyway I guess, part of it is I spend so much time alone, which in away I enjoy since I don't like too much drama, but in other ways gets a little tired, and I sometimes need outside stimulation other then the controlled environment of my DSL jacked in all the time internet connection.

I am chilly let me put a jacket on hold on.....

Anyway....So much is goin on with leaving kbp and all... its a little anti-climatic cause i won't let anyone do any big "to do" about me leaving, I am not trying to go out like that, I just want to be out, you know what I am saying I have been at the agency like goin on 4 years and its just time to get out in creation. But its not goin to be easy and I know that the same kind of dysfunction that i got away with at kbp I am not going to be able to get away with at SF, and I know it, and they are paying me nice cheddar so I can't be acting up.... well i can act up a little bit...

I have to speak briefly on my protege Rob McFarland who I am leaving to the sharks, its so funny how your life can have so many mirrors about it. Rob is like a mirror to Chaon my younger brother who I am now not speaking to after his threatening me and disrespecting me over the phone, a kind of behavior I will not tolerate.

Anyway, Mr McFarland (thats how I always refer to him) was telling me today he was so upset with me for leaving that he could punch me, which I just find so amusing. Rob like Chaon is younger then me, Rob not by much Chaon by 4 years, same general complexion as Chaon paper bag tan brown, and hot tempered. I do hope Rob will work on his temper and his anger, he has so much in him.... I am hardly one to talk, i am quite overdue for some therapy myself, but I just hope he will be able to work well with the next people he has too. It was a blessing to both of us to work together, his being straight and my being the queerest thing since polyester. It made for a good challenge.

I actually had doubts about whether I could work with him or not, cause he was so straight and obviously homophobic (just like Chaon) But his work was very tight, which allowed me to accept his learning curve.... :) I am very happy to have hired him and to allow him the voice to get a better initial offer then what I offered, the boy has got skills he just needs to focus and he will do just fine, I hope they will challenge him more then they did me. But time will tell. I think I should wrap up cause this is a long as entry and my fingers are getting tired and I do want to wrap up a few things, like checking the IMDB for the cast list of love and basketball and compare it to the one for The Best Man both of which Spike Lee was the producer for.......anyway till next time.
