Dr. Shen's Log, Pt. 4

Dr. Shen Jiu, Head of Research at Cang Qiong Facilities. Date, 3, 5, 2024. Mission 2 report.

Progress on Project Pisces is going smoothly, despite some… interpersonal complications.

Dr. Shang has insisted on making several modifications to Alpherg’s design that were previously rejected due to budgetary constraints. However our success during the first mission has allowed for more funding to be secured for the project, and the adjustments have been made.

While Alpherg is still only capable of very rudimentary signals, it’s vocabulary has increased and Dr. Shang has installed a pair of mechanical arms to the sides and affixed lights to them, which allows for questions to be conveyed.

Apparently questions and confusion are communicated through markings located on the shoulders.

Shortly afterwards we launched again, and were able to locate and open a second dialogue with ‘Yue Qingyuan’. Dr. Shang was able to introduce himself using a rough approximation of his own name, in addition to my own. I did not approve this course of action, as my involvement in the project is currently strictly observational, and will remain so until the subject can be directly observed near the surface. I therefor do not see why my introduction to the subject was necessary.

In addition to this irritation, Dr. Shang used the pod’s newfound ability to ask questions to request permission to swim alongside the mer for an extended period of time, and spent that period of time attempting absolutely no form of communication. He has gone on record stating it would be ‘rude to jump right into it. We should at least take him out before we start poking and prodding at him.’

I am once again being reminded of why I was originally hesitant to bring him onto this project.

No-one understands the complexity of mer culture and language, nor the delicate techniques required to establish any form of proper communication and comradery with them! It’s like people think I just fell in a tank and all the secrets to Leviathan class mers and the ability to instantly become best friends with one of them was just fucked up into me through the ass. Well I hate to break it to you, but it did in fact take a lot of time and research and effort to be able to understand them on this level, and the only reason I was a Snack~ and not a snack was the result of a lot of effort put in BEFORE I fell in the tank!!!

EXEC_ZENVA=RYUSSE >> FLEUR_CITY, Part 4: Tour de Fleur City

Pt. 1 Pt. 2 Pt. 3

The group assigned to follow Trein traversed through parts of the city to a unique area: The Waterways. According to history books, these waterways were used as ways for people to escape the persecution and chaos of those times. Even though they now seem as simple hidden passageways around the city, they still are a marvel to witness, historical reasons or otherwise.

Knowing that such a beautiful hideaway was used as a means of escape struck a nerve in the Reyvateil. Lucky for her, she kept it hidden from her classmates who were more amazed by their former functionality and the close up beauty of the water.

“Boooriiing~,” Grim whined. “They just look like plain waterways to me!”

Well, almost everyone.

“Grim! These waterways have a basis of functionality for all of Fleur City!”

“Not sorry, Riddle. My point still stands!”

“Did you take your wife down this Waterway on your honeymoon sensei?” Jamil asked, changing the subject.

“I have, yes.”

“I can imagine the splendor of memories you and the misses must’ve had, professor! Truly such details would benefit Waka-sama when he takes up a Queen!”

“Sebek, we pretty much know who it is.”

“OTHER THAN THAT SO-” Grim jumped on his face before he could finish the sentence.

“Not so loud! Doc and Headmage said “ecknay!”, remember?!”

‘GET OFF OF ME!’ was muffled as Sebek tried to pry the feline off him. Meanwhile, the rest of their group just looked on and laughed at the display.

“Whatever the Doctor saw in him to be an honorary in their classes I’ll never know.”

Malleus caught on that one of their plus ones wasn’t speaking as much. He turned to see Meryu staring at the water with a forlorn expression. He brushed his hand over her cheek by her beauty mark, making her face him. “Inferiare, are you ok? You've been quiet during the tour.”

“I'm fine, Midori-kun,” She waved her hand at his concern.

They noted that Sebek had finally taken Grim off his face, and Trein ushering them out of the area so their echoes didn't disturb some of the nearby citizens. The prince offered his arm for her to take, which she did. “You sure?”

She nodded. “I'm just thinking.”

“About?”

“...Stuff.”

“Is it about the History of the Waterways?”

“...Well, more than just them,” She worried her lip between her teeth. “I was wondering if the Righteous Judge would pardon IPDs.”

“I'm sure he would have. He was said to give proper jurisdiction and that helped end the madness in Fleur City.”

“I know that much, but…”

“But?”

“…I’m nervous to admit this, but I’m also a bit bothered by what Mr. Anthony and Mr. Lothaire told us back at the tower.”

His eyes widened at that. “You mean the Maiden of the Wind?”

“Yes.” She said, “It’s not the first I’ve heard of Reyvateil offering their lives to save others. And in those cases, becoming the very thing they pray to. What do you make of it?”

“I think,” He placed his hand over one of hers. “Whatever her reason for ending her life and becoming the Bell of Salvation, I know that she is looking down upon the people she saved with happiness.”

“Even if…she had to leave her most precious person behind?” Sadness filled her voice.

He tightened his hand for a moment, his tone firm and resolve strong. “...Yes.” He masked his feelings with a comforting smile. “Come, let us not worry of such thoughts any longer.” Guiding her alone, Malleus and his Siren continued behind their group, arms still interlocked.

The next part of the tour had them traverse through vendors lined down the road. Many of them were selling all types of treats, toys and souvenirs. There were so many choices it was hard for them to decide.

While they were distracted by the countless items shown their way, each person picking up something for their friends back at school, someone felt a tug on their side. “Huh? Hey, you let go of my minion’s bag!” Meryu turned to look down at who Grim was yelling at, and jumped a bit in surprise by what was tugging at his cape.

It was a billie goat. And he seemed a bit hungry.

“Aww, hello there.”

“Mee-eh-eh!” The little goat cried. It tried to bite at her bag again, but this time she pulled it away, inspecting to make sure it didn't cause a tear in it.

“Nuh uh. No biting,” She chided. “I'd give you food if I could…Grim for you see-”

“Food!” He pouted his paw at a fruit stall.

“Perfect!” She leaned over to the little mammal, making sure he didn’t try to get a bite of her hair, too. “You want some food, little one?” her answer was him rubbing at her dress skirt. “Ok, ok!” She ran over to the fruit vendor and purchased three apples and carefully placed two of them in her bag.

Seeing that the little goat followed her to the stall, she decided to surprise him. “How about~ An apple!” Meryu flashed it in her palms. He bellowed again, opened his jaw wide, and stuffed the whole apple inside his mouth and slowly chewed on it in content. She petted him with a smile, praising him for being a good goat.

The others were watching the whole interaction from the side. “Strange for that goat to be milling about without an owner or keeper. I wonder why?”

“Good question, Rosehearts.” Trein told him. “Goats are the City’s symbolic animal.”

“Really?” Jamil was surprised by this.

“Indeed. Goats represent modesty, abundance, success in solitude, and resilience. They usually tend to wander the streets, but are also tended to by the caretakers here. It’s quite common for tourists to stumble across one or more in their travels. And as we’ve witnessed, they tend to have a knack for biting and eating anything they see.” He chuckled.

“At least that one seems well mannered compared to…” Sebek sneers at a billie goat circling Malleus. “That one staring at Waka-sama.”

“Animals are more fond of people with good intentions. Perhaps he sees Draconia as one such person.” Riddle reasoned.

“That or a distant relative,” Jamil joked.

Sebek was not having it with Viper’s ‘insult’ of his prince, and took it seriously. “How dare that creature believe such a thing! I will demand that Goat apologize for his actions.”

“Sebek, I don’t think that’s,” As soon as he approached the goat by his Housewarden-

*CRUNCH* “YEOWCH!!!”

-the first year’s hand was bitten by it, resulting in him yelping. “A wise decision.

~A few moments Later, Fleur City: Food Vendor Street~

“You shouldn’t have made his mama angry, Mr. Sebek.”

A grumble was Meryu’s answer as she used her healing spell to patch up his bite. ‘Don’t want to catch anything dangerous,’ She told him.

With one small cuddle from the Avatar, his hand was healed. “I will…be mindful when engaging with Goats.”

“And~”

“...And not call his mother a wall trophy.”

“Good Zigvolt! Now, let’s go meet up with everyone!” She patted him on his hat and rose from the nearby benches they used. Zigvolt followed her to where the others were waiting, noticing that they seemed to be a person down. “Uh, guys. Where’s Midori-kun?”

“Huh?”

“Malleus-sama is gone?!”

“Oh no,” This was not a good sign. Losing the Prince of Briar Valley on a school trip is the last thing anyone wanted.

Where did he disappear to?!

~With Malleus, Fleur City: Back Street~

Malleus had enjoyed seeing the sights and sounds of Fleur City. He does not live here, and yet its history pulled him to discover some of the hidden wonders people tend to avoid. He marveled at the cracks and abandoned paved ways, mesmerized by the endless tales they speak of those who wish to hear their tale.

It could be from either his love for things people tend to leave behind combined with his beloved’s songs, but he feels as if he is connected to the World this way.

His endless drifting brought him to where Team Star was: at the Topsy Turvy Square. And lo behold, the Student Council President was with them as well. Since he was far from his group, the prince may as well stay with until the others arrive. Strolling past more vendors, his eyes caught sight of something from his peripheral. Two hand sewn birds: one imitating that of a silver color and one imitating that of gold. Each bird had a metal hair clip on the bottom of them, and their necks were donned with a scarf in different colors: one of Mauve and one of Emerald.

“Ah, I see these have piqued your curiosity, have they?” The vendor who was selling said.

“Yes, they are beautifully crafted,” The prince confesses. “Is there significance to their scarves?”

“Of course, good sir!” The old man laughed. “The colors here represent the Maiden of the Wind and the Kindly Bellringer.”

“Oh?”

“Mmm-hmm. You see, the Maiden of the Wind showed endless love and compassion to the people of Fleur City. Her words almost sounded like music whenever she helped her people, or even strangers. And one day, when she saw how poorly the Bellringer was treated by some, she took it upon herself to help heal the wounds on both his body and heart. Legend has it that before she disappeared into the Bell, two birds were seen flying away together, and each one was said to be her and the Kindly Bellringer’s spirits passing on. Together even in death as they say.”

“I see…” Such a morbid tale, but it does match the one they were told back at Noble Bell. Looking back to the Bird barrettes on the table, Malleus had pondered for a moment, and decided his next choice. “May I purchase these?”

“Of course! And it’s good that you bought them together! Have someone in mind you wish to give one of them to?”

A smile graced his lips. “I do.”

They called her the Briar Maiden for obvious reasons: the enormous swathe of briar rose bushes that surrounded her real body. Growing from the moment she entered her eternal slumber, it protected that physical anchor even as it warped and metamorphosed into a decidedly non-human form from years of degeneration and regeneration. An "abnormal" end for any Reyvateil, even for a "false" γ-Sublimate like her; usually she'd either be a puddle of biofluid or a corpse in a glass coffin, the latter of which was her colleague Sakia's end alongside her beloved Aoto.

She hoped they were having fun singing Songs together in heaven.

Agh, tangents. The other thing that started cropping up the longer she slept were the visions. Tales of other realities, not necessarily her but others who tread a certain thread of [possibilities]. A fairy tale, told countless times over, of a Twisted Wonderland. She was especially interested in the version that starred herself in that mysterious college. But right now, she had another goal...

Ah, there they were. Milgram and Yuuki. It would be rude to keep guests waiting, especially after going all the way to prepare the table beforehand. She let her consciousness drift for a split second, and no longer was she in her true body but a new doll-like one, closer to what she looked like in her youth. The dress she wore was a staple one, used among the many forms she used to communicate with visitors and covered with beautiful roses.

She sat herself down at the end of the table, but her guests did not. They instead took in their surroundings, and... hm. Yuuki was the first to bring up the discrepancies.

"Should we paint the white roses red?"

How astute. Well, there goes that doubt! She chuckled, "Don't worry. I just wanted to make sure I got the right people."

A wave of a finger, and she painted the roses herself. It was no proper Heartslaybul tea party, but it was enough for her. Satisfied, the two boys took their seats.

Milgram, the Genom-Sharl dragon, voiced his concerns. "Why did you call us here, miss Briar Maiden-"

"Oh please, just call me Meryu! We're all friends of Night Raven College here, are we not?"

"I-I suppose so."

Yuuki, sharp-eyed and eared as ever, caught on once again. "And you include yourself because...?"

"It's related to what I wished to speak to you boys about."

She took a sip of her tea before continuing.

"You are well aware of how the Briar Maiden's dreams can see into the vastness of time?"

Milgram nodded. "The past, the future, even alternate timelines... it's like a sporadic version of the holy Oversight."

Yuuki's eyes widened. "Oh! That must include Twisted Wonderland too. So you must've been in our places or something in one of those worlds."

"Exactly! And so far it's been a juicy tale! But now I am curious, because of the stories I've dreamed about, yours was especially fragmented. So... erm... I wanted to know more..."

She kicked her legs in embarrassment as the two boys laughed at their own worries.

Yuuki sipped his own tea. "Haah, and here I thought we were in trouble!"

Milgram shook his head, but partook of the tea as well. "I'm sure we'll still be embarrassed nonetheless, don't get your hopes up harton fayra..."

Satisfied, she produced a picture of two individuals: a tall professor with a prosthetic arm, and his shorter assistant with pink animal traits. Her excited grin couldn't be any wider!

"So, my first burning question: who was Professor Betel and his assistant Draco?"

...she was not expecting a synchronized groan of pain...?

Ok, my dear fellow scarahidas, I'm curious: what did you guys rename your Wanderer? Tag/comment/reply/whatever with the answer!

Did anyone else give him a ship name? I named him Melvaz-Ameryu; Melvaz meaning "bride" and Ameryu meaning "dreams/memories" (so Wanderer is the bride of the god of dreams, who also held his memories lol) because I was already head-over-heels for scarahida before I even got to the naming screen. ♡

Dr. Shen's Log, Pt. 3

Dr. Shen Jiu, Head of Research at Cang Qiong Facilities. Date; 25, 4, 2024. Project Pisces, Mission 1 report.

We were able to successfully modify an unmanned pod to include a light display across the front that roughly mimics the patterns of the Leviathan class mer ‘Mobei Jun’. Dr. Shang insisted on this display as it allows for the signals he’s most familiar with, and moreover we did not possess adequate footage to mimic the patterns of the Leviathan class we are attempting to establish contact with.

A soon as the mer was located, the unmanned pod, nicknamed ‘Alpherg’, was deployed. It was steered by two of our pilots while Dr. Shang operated the light display. Said light display is, unfortunately, not as complex as the patterns of a live mer, nor can it include the patterns covering the rest of their bodies, which results in only very rudimentary messages being possible.

As with the previous encounter, the Leviathan class mer approached the pod without displaying obvious hunting behaviors. As it approached, Dr. Shang impute a light display that roughly translates to:

Hello. Voice pain.

The mer paused, and responded with a series of flashing patterns and displays across his face, chest and shoulders. Dr. Shang was able to view these displays through the video feed, and has stated that while the mer’s patterns are different in shape and color from Mobei Jun’s, the formation of ‘words’ is done in a very similar fashion across them. He was able to understand the majority of the mer’s communication attempts, and strike up a dialogue.

The following is a rough translation of the conversation held between Dr. Shang and the Leviathan class mer, now recognized as ‘Yue Qingyuan.’

Yue Qingyuan: Hello (?)*1 What hurts?

Dr. Shang: You voice. Hurt me. Quiet. Please.

Yue Qingyuan: My voice is painful? I apologize! What are you doing here?

Dr. Shang: Learn.

Yue Qingyuan: (?)*1 Learn what?

Dr. Shang: Learn you. (!)*2 You name

Yue Qingyuan: What is my name? My name is Yue Qingyuan. What is your name?

Dr. Shang: Can’t voice here. Go up, voice good. You go up.

Yue Qingyuan: The surface? You want me to come to the surface?

Dr. Shang: (!)*2 Yes! Good! Now (*3). Voice you

Yue Qingyuan: I’m not sure I understand.

Dr. Shang: Apologize. Me return soon. Learn you. Surface, voice.

Yue Qingyuan: You… cannot speak to me here, but may on the surface?

Dr. Shang: (!)*

Yue Qingyuan: What exactly are you?

Dr. Shang: Human.

Yue Qingyuan: (?)* You don’t look human.

Dr. Shang: Me human voice.

Yue Qingyuan: A human voice? How strange…

It was noted at this point by Dr. Shang that the mer displayed absolutely no aggressive or hunting behaviors and he believed it would be safe to proceed with closer communication.

Dr. Shang: Me see you. Soon. Call. Me go now.

Yue Qingyuan: Oh! I’m still not sure I understand. Goodbye!

The encounter ended shortly afterwards. Dr. Shang expressed extreme frustration over Alpherg’s inability to express questions, but seemed overall pleased with the results.

Had a realization that makes Meryu and Malleus's dynamic sweeter.

Malleus, during his first conversation with her in Level 1, was all like "Your singing is beautiful". And as a Reyvateil, aka a species whose songs are literal representations of their emotions, that's probably one of the highest compliments one could give her. Dude really did say the number one thing to at least get a Reyvateil to like you by complete accidental.

He did. Sure he didn't know that at the time, but he did move her heart by saying that!

And when you factor in that he also said that he wanted to get to know her, he indirectly linked himself to her. Which, for any Reyvateil, is something they crave with their partner/ Vanguard. Of course results may vary.

considering how meryu and yuuki are likely some of the few reyvateil yuus out there, i'm now curious as to how they would interact

the wonderland crew would be terrified by the prospect of two highly explosive mages in the same room infodumping about their own time periods and showing off their songs

though it could also lead to heartwarming moments because here are two people in an unfamiliar world, finding familiarity in each other, sharing [songs/feelings] with each other in an act of solidarity
