Pieces of 80s media that I think the Party would be obsessed with, since they’re nerds afterall:

Eleven: Star Trek the Next Generation- Data kinnie before that was a thing people invented. Gets into the novels with Hopper’s help, they have passionate debates on TOS v TNG

Mike: I just know he’s seen Dune a ton of times. He’s read the book, nobody else can get through it but he promises that “it’s genius”. Firmly believes that it’s because no one else gets it like he does. Will explain the political and cultural history to anyone who definitely didn’t ask. 

Max: Nightmare on Elm Street- in every single movie she is cheering Freddy on in the theatre without a care. Obsessed with Nancy, her and Glenn were a bi awakening of sorts

Lucas: Karate Kid- watched it with Max but became way more of a fan than her, dragged the party to Part II and Part III, will make Max watch Cobra Kai when they’re old and gray

Will: Danger Zone is on his Spotify playlist and now I can’t help but imagine Top Gun fan Will. Once he’s out, he passionately tries to convince the entire group that Iceman and Maverick are in love. 

Dustin: Doctor Who, based purely on vibes. He loves explaining the plots of entire episodes to Steve at work, and loves to answer Steve’s questions about it even more. Maintains that the fifth doctor is the best one to this day.

Erica: My Little Pony, obviously. Applejack is her favorite ofc. Has written some self insert fan fiction with her friends but they have absolutely no idea what that is.

Phantasm being surprisingly deep and touching

Talked about black phone getting me into 70s horror and this movie is another example. Or can be a bit of a drag at times and… definitely was made in the 70s .but once the full picture was together I could automatically forgive a lot of what I thought to be dragging or nonsensical parts of the movie.

It’s definitely more psychological as the gore and the real “scary” parts are few and far between (this is also coming from someone largely desensitized to horror and how Modern horror requires everything at once/constant spectacle and loses control of suspense.)

But holy shit.I’m not going to spoil anything directly but the twist- originally made me bad but is actually fucking great? The movie is a exploration of a child’s experience and mishandling of/with grief and - I love that honestly. It makes how attached and desperate for his brother now to leave him all the more bitter sweet. Really good sibling relationship. If a bit clingy (for obvious reasons at end). Recommend the film for at least a initial watch.

Only major issue being that they pull a nightmare on elm street with the twist and HAVE to get that final scare in and ruin what they established. Basically the whole film takes place in Micheals mind after the death of- well his family, especially his brother and the main villain is a death allegory/figure - and having that final scare at the end of “it’s all in his mind….or is it?!” So ruins that and it’s like- why.

Stranger Things x A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Parallels = Byler

This is going to be a long one, but I promise it’s worth it!

So if you’ve watched Nightmare on Elm, you’ll know that Vecna was heavily inspired by Freddy Krueger. Freddy attacking children through dreams and using their trauma against them vs Vecna entering their minds and using their trauma against them. Vecna’s long hand is very reminiscent of Krueger’s knife glove. There’s also the fact that 001’s father is played by the same actor who originally played Krueger, Robert Barton Englund. There’s also like a million other reasons why this is connected but that’s just some background to make a bigger connection.

What some people may not know is the the second elm street movie is basically known as the gayest horror movie of its time. The entire movie was queer coded, but just barely tbh. And it actually created a lot of problems for the main actor who was closeted at the time.

^ Jesse is the main character in the movie and he is coded as a bisexual, or gay person depending on your interpretation, struggling to come out. Freddy exploits these struggles throughout the movie.

So the movie opens up with The Walshes (…The Wheelers… lmao) living in the house of the previous main protagonist of the first Elm Street movie. Her name was Nancy (!!!)

Now Jesse has a love interest, Lisa (…El…) but every time he tries to pursue her, his nightmares keep getting in the way. (The equivalent being Mike trying to be with El, but him being unable to say he loves her, hindering their relationship. Also, there always being a convenient plot every season that keeps Mike/El apart).

During the movie, Freddy keeps possessing Jesse in very queer ways, sending him to a gay bar, materializing when Jesse is trying to physically engage with Lisa, and eventually Jesse shows up in the middle of the night in his male friend/crush’s bed and asks him to watch and see if he gets possessed. Basically the whole damn thing is one big metaphor about his running from his queerness.

At the end of the movie, Lisa begs Jesse to fight Freddy. And she gives him this big declaration of love that allows him to break free and become his hetero self again. (I mean…this is just the inverse of the piggyback scene.)

Basically there’s the scene that’s supposed to lend itself to Jesse being a bit eccentric, and queer, and he puts on the above ridiculous outfit to dance (…roller skate…). Cue everyone giving Mike a funny look and Argyle making note of his outfit.

Since we know the Duffers were referencing Elm Street this season, isn’t it strange that Mike is the one being paralleled and dressed like Jesse, not Will, the main character who’s arc this season is about being queer?

Definitely will not be surprised if Mike is Vecna’d next season and his queerness is subtextually or explicitly used while he is taunted by Vecna. But unlike in Elm Street 2 , I think this will lead to Mike coming to terms with himself once he is saved.
