"...AND BY SLOW ARTS OF CRUELTY WERE CORRUPTED AND ENSLAVED; AND THUS DID MELKOR BREED THE HIDEOUS RACE OF THE ORCS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the many different types of orcs and orc makeup effects by Weta Workshop, all orc makeup iterations featured here can be found in Peter Jackson's first installment of the "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001). New Line Cinema.
"But of those unhappy ones who were ensnared by Melkor little is known of a certainty... Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressëa, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in eny and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar... And deep in their dark hearts the Orcs loathed the Master whom they served in fear, the maker only of their misery..."
-- "The Silmarillion," "Quenta Silmarillion, III -- Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor," written by J.R.R. Tolkien

Tales Starter Project: An Overview (Part 2)
So to start with: This is pretty cool. I’m pretty dreadful when it comes to self promo, and realistically my target audience of people nostalgic for decades old introductory products are most likely to stumble upon a post of mine from a random google search or something. But even though I’m not using reddit all that much any more I happened across a number of posts in the last couple of days…

Something that always gets to me watching the fellowship of the ring is that when they first enter Moria and find the bodies and the goblin arrows, legolas, aragorn, and boromir all draw their weapons, but none of them attempt to get gimli to do the same. They all allow him that moment of mourning, not expecting him to simply carry on. And taking into consideration, these people haven't been together that long, who all have differences and issues with each, that moment is incredibly touching.

I whine about this periodically but I might as well make a post with my citations, for the benefit of future reference: the line in the film version of The Two Towers, where one of the orcs yells "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!" after killing another orc or goblin is directly and dramatically opposite to what happens in more or less the same scene in the book, and in my opinion flattens an interesting aspect of the orcs and goblins in Lord of the Rings.
In chapter three of The Two Towers, "The Uruk-Hai," the force that attacked the Fellowship and kidnapped Merry and Pippin are made up of several different groups that don't entirely get along. One group is the Uruk-Hai from Isengard, led by Ugluk. Another is a group of goblins from Moria, who have come seeking revenge against the Fellowship and then intend to return. There's also Grishnakh, who seems to be a direct representative from Sauron's forces in Mordor. The groups quarrel over what to do next - Grishnakh wants the hobbits brought directly to Mordor, Ugluk (in nominal command) insists on bringing them to Isengard, the Moria group kind of just wants to go home. But in inciting others against Ugluk, Grishnakh says this:
Swine is it? How do you folk like being called swine by the muck-rakers of a dirty little wizard? It's orc-flesh they eat, I'll warrant.
This immediately starts a fight, weapons drawn, Ugluk's group kills several goblins before he regains control. But I have always found it significant that the accusation of cannibalism is part of the words that start that fight. Earlier in the conversation Ugluk brags that Saruman gives them "man's-flesh" to eat, so they clearly have no qualms about eating humans. But eating other orcs? Clearly enough of a taboo that it's (part of) a fight-starting insult, and I've always found that an interesting enough piece of worldbuilding that its total reversal in the films irritates me to no end.

Ringlord High King of Everything Elrond, inspired here
(@the-writing-goblin)
I imagine in this situation elrond would have been partially tempted by boromir's declaration, but instead of trying to fight sauron with it (because even in the weirdest crack au i can think of elrond is still too genre-aware to try that) he tried to use it to supercharge his use of vilya and protect everyone.
basically Ringlord!Elrond turned the entirety of Eriador into a mega-gondolin situation: massive walls (courtesy of numenorean/eregion tech) around the regions bordering the north or Mordor, fortresses along the mountain range and several layers of gates along every road in or out. Everybody goes in; nobody goes out; everyone is safe.
and he ended up claiming the kingship to give him more authority in the process - he's High King of the Noldor and Sindar and King of the Edain (given that there are like three half-vanyar in middle-earth, he's more or less king of all children of iluvatar) and so he can have command over the entirety of the West.
and with the help of the Ring, this actually works! but the corruption starts to show eventually
he uses his kinship to Gondor to forcefully drag them into his neo-gondolin-empire-creation so he can ensure none of his great-nephews will ever have to face sauron. he extends the walls to encompass Mirkwood, because he's the high king of the sindar and has a duty to protect thranduil's realm, and unleashes the full might of his melian-lite powers to purge Sauron's Shadow and the spawn of Ungoliant from the now-Greenwood.
Galadriel and Glorfindel very much see where this is going and are very very worried. galadriel won't let him build walls around lothlorien (because she lives next door to a balrog and knows exactly what happened to gondolin) but celeborn thinks it's a good idea, since after all Doriath wouldn't have fallen if Melian's girdle had still been up. glorfindel tries to talk him out of it but the ring has taken hold
the Ring's power also enhances all his natural weirdness and powers - he has his wings and maia markings permanently activated now, with or without finwean anger. he can fully shapeshift, and he goes from raising waves in the bruinen to raising tsunamis in the great sea.
except the finwean anger seems to be permanently activated now, too, and anyone who harms someone he's deemed under his protection finds themselves the target of a rather ironic vengeance quest. the shapeshifting is looking weird now - his teeth are always sharp now, and his eyes have gone fully inhuman. sometimes he has claws and his wings look more like bats than eagles. and his water powers are more like osse's- he can't calm the waters now (goldberry is the first to notice something's up) and can only stir them into massive ship-sinking storms and tsunamis.
this progresses until he's basically Evil Luthien ruling over a continent-wide Mega-Gondolin, slaughtering orc-hordes before they even reach the white walls and sinking any naval fleet Sauron tries to send around the coast. Everybody is brought in; nobody leaves; everyone is safe...?
he figures out that the dwarven legend of "Durin's Bane" has to be one of the few first age balrogs thats still unaccounted for. and well, it's living right on his border, and he can't risk another fall of gondolin, right? so he leads a small force in there to clear moria, and they shove the balrog off the edge, but it takes one of his captains (except glorfindel) with it (maybe erestor?) and he uses the ring and saves erestor, (and maybe floods the balrog for good measure), and glorfindel is sure he saw elrond's eyes go yellow for a moment.
and even fully corrupted, he knows he can't take the ring directly into mordor. but he can wipe out sauron's armies outside the walls, to protect his kingdom - because turgon's mistake was thinking he was safe even when there were balrogs and dragons and orcs outside, right?
somewhere along the way, arwen realizes what's happening and goes to live with galadriel. one of the twins goes with her; the other stays out of loyalty but eventually follows.
elrond's kingdom has become a cross between doriath and gondolin now, with all the surrounding lands warped by ring-magic to hide it, and layers of stone walls and iron gates preventing anyone from leaving. because everyone is here; nobody leaves; everyone is... safe?

'So help me if we live to see another day I'm going to kill Mithrandir.' I thought to myself. Why? You may ask, well I, along with the Fellowship, were currently in Moria in a bit of a conundrum. You see my friends and I were having to run for our lives away from thousands upon thousands of goblins. Not to mention the fact we had to escape from a Balrog as well. Gimli had thought it would have been a wonderful idea to traverse through the abandoned mines. A few loud noises later; curtsy of Pippin, the group and I were dashing through the old halls to the nearest exit as quick as possible. And at the current moment, I was holding up the rear of the group to make sure none of the hobbits were left behind and to let some steam off while shooting goblins in the head with my arrows. And I'm not guilty to say I imagined their heads to be Gandalf's. Then running across a narrow bridge with Gandalf staying behind to make sure everyone makes it safely across, the Balrog made his appearance. For the first time in my immortal life I saw Mithrandir afraid for his life and ours. He started to make his way over to the center of the bridge. Raising his sword and staff saying " You shall not pass!" Then slamming the butt of his staff to the ground braking the bridge beneath the beast. We let out a sigh of relief too soon, because a fiery whip rapped itself around Gandalf's leg and pulled him until only his head and arms were visible over the edge of the broken bridge. Looking to us with sadness and slight fear, "Fly you fools," was his last words before releasing his grip and falling to the chasm below. I screamed in heartbreak along with Frodo, standing there in disbelief of losing a close friend and a father figure to Frodo. Boromir grabbed Frodo and slowly walked backwards with a sword in hand to protect him and himself. Looking in my direction Boromir yelled. " (Y/N)! We need to go!" I broke out of my stupor and made my way to the exit, but before I could make it fully through I felt a sharp pain in my right side from the back. I looked down to see a poorly made arrow stuck in my flesh. Standing behind the wall separating the orcs from their target to pull the arrow out. I looked at the tip of the arrowhead to see a dark substance. 'Poison.' I thought to myself then throwing the object to the side. I tore a piece of my tunic underneath my cloak and rapped it over my wound. Making sure that it was out of sight I ran out of the Mines to finally feel the sun on my (S/C) skin and feel a light breeze ruffle my (H/L), (H/C)hair. For a moment I felt better until reality set in. 'Mithrandir is gone.' I told myself. I look at the others and realized they knew this too. I felt a signal tear run down my face and drop to the ground below.
We had been traveling for about half a day and I could feel myself losing strength quickly. Everything was fuzzy around the edges of my vision, I could feel vertigo starting to set in. I could hear Gimli talking to the hobbits ahead of me but it was muffled by the sound of blood pumping in my sensitive ears. Suddenly the Fellowship had stopped. I looked up and tried to focus my sight. That's when I saw him. He looked like he was one of the Valar descending from the halls of Mandos. He was beautiful in my eyes. Perfect blonde hair in warrior braids running down to his shoulders. I thought I was dreaming, but to soon was I pulled from my revery. I felt a sharp pain over the flesh that was pierced by that foul arrow. Everyone looked to me in confusion and worry once I opened my cloak to look at my wound only to see that blood coated most of my right side. Dark spots started to set in when the blonde elf walked over to me with concern in his baby blue eyes. I realized he was speaking to me, but I could not hear him. Then I felt myself lose balance and start to fall, but before I could hit the hard ground beneath me the elf caught me and was yelling to his men and to the Fellowship asking what happened. They didn't know because I didn't tell them. I wouldn't want them to worry. Soon an elf brought a horse over to us, the beautiful blue eyed elf lifted me up bridal style, put me on the horse, and hopped on behind me. He pulled me in to his chest so I didn't put strain on my wound or fall. While one hand carefully slid around my waist and the other grabbed the rains of the horse. Then every thing fell into darkness with my head leaned into the chest of my savior. I hoped I would live long enough to know his name.

Perfect timing is when the first thing I see after I make my silly fan fic moment where I make Gromph duel wield frying pans like he’s Drizzt is this image on social media
Edit the frying pan segment:
Ducking below the whipping barbed leash, Gromph prepared a spell, spinning his delicate fingers in a gliding motion, but he was interrupted when the emboldened goblin warriors stabbed their spears at his unprotected hands in the attempt to slice his exposed casting fingers. He was an archmage, he could conjure up devastating storms that would fell a goblin army, but the room was too small, Catti-Brie too close, and too many goblin spears in his face to properly cast his deadly spells fast enough. He reached back instead and grabbed the items hanging loose from Regis' pack and swung it full force into the face of the nearest goblin.
Regis felt his heavy pack get lighter and heard several loud clangs behind him, he turned from his own fight to see a furious archmage beat back vicious goblins with a pair of cast iron frying pans. The goblins looked terrified and Regis wondered why in all his years he had never done the same. Regis edged away from the rampaging archmage in case his own head was next to be squashed by a wild swing and he focused his attention to the goblins ahead of him. He puffed out his chest thinking of Donnola, the Bleeding Vines, the Grinning Ponies and all that is good in the world, like a full belly and a quiet fishing hole. With a dance of his short rapier two goblins fell dead as he struck them from over their shields. Regis yelled a cheer, until two more goblins took their place.
Jarlaxle glanced over to spy Drizzt somersault over a group of goblins, but he corrected himself when he saw it was his own brother Gromph dual wielding cooking equipment. He made the mental note to laugh about it later as more goblins streamed into his side of the room.

Another breakfast table discussion:
What social media platforms can be represented by which place in Tolkien's universe?
-Husband was adamant that Reddit was Gondor (the last bastion of decency)
-We agreed that Facebook was Murkwood
-Tiktok is the Goblin realm
-Husband claimed instagram was Rohan (albeit ruled by Wormtongue - I didn't quite agree, Rohan is too good for them)
-9gag is Mordor
-4chan is Moria
-Twitter/X is Isengard
And I want to claim that:
-Tumblr is the Shire (petty people showing off their shiny marbles.)
Please discuss this further.

Tales Starter Project: two more decks in paper!
In particular 60 card kitchen table decks for Blue/Green Elves (and the Scry mechanic) and a mostly Red deck focusing on Moria’s goblins. Though obviously I had to have Durin’s Bane in there, and consequently a few swamps. And a Sméagol in the shadows.
So just a quick update on what I’ve been up to with these. If this is the first one of my posts that you’ve come across about this subject (welcome!) then in short I’ve modified the two Lord of the Rings Starter Kit decks to make them more flavourful, and have designed a few others for other factions hoping for a similar vibe. So this week a care package from someone I regularly trade with showed…
