Today is April 27th. On this day (2941, the Third Age of Middle-earth) the hobbit Bilbo Baggins left the Shire with the company of Thorin Oakenshield and the wizard Gandalf. The adventure begins!

Lots of people talk about hair braiding in their LOTR fics, especially among the elves and the Rohirrim. But I don’t think we talk about it enough among the horses. If Rohan is a place that puts so much effort and care into their horses and they frequently braid their own hair, then they’re definitely braiding some manes and tails, too, right? And if the elves are putting decorative bells on their horses, how are they not taking this other obvious chance to ramp up their aesthetic game as well? I think they must be, and we just aren’t hearing about it explicitly very often. We ALL braided horse hair at the stable when I was young, and I refuse to believe it’s just a preteen girl thing. More LOTR horse braids!

My first attempt (1) at the Zainthar Kai scheme was a little too blue-purple, and the red too bright, so I did a second attempt (2)
Still no closer to making a final decision :P

An important worldbuilding question I don't see answered in enough media: If you've got multiple humanoid races, how easy is it to figure out which race someone was by their skeleton? I mean, I guess telling an orc from a gnome would have some key indicators, like size and tusks, but how do you tell a gnome from a halfling? Do you need to send the bones to an alchemist to find out their chemical composition to tell an elf skeleton from a human skeleton, or do elves have larger eye sockets? If you filed down an orc skeleton's tusks, would a goliath be able to use the skeleton to fake their own death? Fantasy CSI agent picks up a femur and cracks it in their hands and says, "This was no dwarf. Dwarf bones would be far too tough to crack without a tool. Someone dressed a halfling in dwarven armour and put their body here to be found... but why?"
