Performing an objective exam when clearing the spine with Dr. Nick Rainey
Clearing a spine, especially in the context of first aid or emergency response, refers to the process of assessing and stabilizing a person's spinal column to minimize the risk of further injury to the spine or spinal cord. This is typically done when there is a suspicion of a spinal injury due to trauma, such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury

Gideon has a whole protocol for when it gets too cold for Kremy. It's just how his brain works. He solved the issue like it was some machine acting up rather than his friend having a natural reaction to the cold.
First and foremost; GET WARM FAST. Whatever the quickest way to get Kremy warm is, that is the first step. Usually this involves wrapping a blanket around both of them so that Gideon can use his own heat to help him.
Secondly; consider how close the next town is. Is it less than an hour and there's no active snow storm? Great, hot foot it to the inn. Are they actively being snowed on and the next town is half a days walk? Find best cover and set up tents, his own fire could only do so much, and it's not worth the risk at that point just to get inside a building.
Thirdly; once in a relatively dry and protected space, remove any wet clothing and replace with comfy, dry jammies. If no wet clothing, removal beyond jacket and hat is unnecessary. Simply place sleepwear near the bed if Kremy wants to change later.
Fourth; alligators are evidently still able to drink during brumation. Grab waterskin and warm it a little. This will help with internal temperatures. AVOID ALCOHOL.
If all is well, simply prepare for bed. Grab a snack to assure internal fire keeps going all night. Ideal sleeping situation has Kremy on top of Gideon to avoid cold floors if they are in a tent, otherwise just having his arms around him in any other position.
There's only been one time when any other steps were needed. Thankfully they had the rest of the Krew by that point, so Gricko was able to assist, but Gideon really hopes he'll never have to do CPR again.
#mostly similar steps to hypothermia but you know#kremy's reptile brain 'mmm warmmm spot. sleepytime' vs kremy's conman brain 'if i don't do 300 tasks today I'll die idc if im cold'#i imagine lizardfolk have an altered version of brumation that is more watered down since they are humanoid#they dont need to sleep thru winter but they are generally tired all day and eat less meals#now REALLY cold temps cause them to actually get lethargic and even lose motor functions really quick#so its still not a good idea to be running around but like. they can. a little.#once upon a witchlight#legends of avantris#ouaw#text#this is a true fact#kremy lecroux#gideon coal#my own hc#...#coalecroux#sorry about the last line btw

not to continue making The Guilt my brand™ but the thought for today is: what it'll look like if john does get his own body.
and not about like, the overwhelm of suddenly having all these sensations and physical needs and feeling every emotion not just as a concept but as a swarm of signals hitting flesh-and-blood nerves. or about the strangeness of the new distance between him and arthur. there's all of that, obviously, but beyond that. after that.
specifically, like.
if it's a brand-new body. or even if it isn't, tbh, to some extent. i'm just thinking about what that looks like. it arrives healthy, right? so it, what. it works fine. it works well. does everything he asks of it, more or less. stand and walk and carry things and, and, and. and he wakes up rested and full of energy, and nothing hurts. it's so...
...so unlike what he's become accustomed to.
because we've generally accepted that arthur is gonna have to Experience Consequences for all of the (gestures at everything), right. so he turns and looks back at what he's leaving behind, and... maybe he realizes it right away, maybe the point of comparison makes it so much more obvious. or maybe he's too caught up in everything else that's going on, and it doesn't even cross his mind. maybe they're walking away from the ritual site or wherever, and arthur keeps falling behind, keeps having to ask him to slow down. or maybe it's the next morning and he's up and out of bed, and wow, why does arthur always make this look so difficult–?
maybe it's a gradual realization. that things are just easier, now.
for him.
and he has nightmares, and baseless anxieties, yes, but that's still not the same. one or two nights of missed sleep don't completely take him out, when he's kept awake for hours on end it's because his mind is racing and not because his body's picked that evening to remind him that he should be dead so many times over. it's not right. it's not fair.
he was there every step of the way. they went through that hell together, them against the world, hand in fucking hand. he was the witness to every horror, every act of violence or cruelty. and he fought, he dragged them both out alive.
so why does he get to escape unscathed?
#the nemesis speaks#swift writes#mv liveblog#malevanalysis#and doubly so if arthur stays blind#and TRIPLY so if he has any sort of lingering loss of motor function/feeling in the hand and foot.#fucking parasite that you are. invade him and steal from him and wear him like armor to keep you safe#and then walk unharmed out of the ruins.#idk i just. i got all the aftermath on the brain today...

i should know that i’m going to get a migraine in the next 24 hours if i randomly drop or fling like 4 objects in 1 morning. but i don’t. i’m just like [x files voice] it’s happening again, isn’t it
#i can understand ‘migraine’ but ‘migraine prodrome’ is too hazy a temporal concept#for me to map it to disability things that are functionally true of me half the time#it just folds in to ‘bad motor skills’

I see people comparing tourette's and functional (FND) tics and I gotta tell y'all, I very much don't have tourette's, but I experience tics. I would assume tourette's is way more consistent and constant, but I only ever have it to severe stress and overwhelm, especially during heavy switches.
And yeah, thinking about it or being reminded of it, does bring it back up, but I don't feel the same sense of intensity or consistency as those with tourette's. It doesn't impair my life usually. It's only when I'm on a verge of a breakdown or during a shutdown or whatever. I obviously have other disabilities that impair me. But don't assume they're the same. Maybe some people with FND actually have tourette's, but I'm definitely not one of them. They don't happen enough for me to identify it as separate.
And I have other FND symptoms, such as catatonia. And I also have Essential Tremors, so I don't know if FND can make it worse or not. Maybe it can, and due to ET being way more consistent and constant, it's a separate thing.
I understand if there's similar symptoms, but I think it matters how much it happens. Like with dissociation, if you have chronic and daily dissociation, maybe consider a more intense dissociative disorder, versus when it's just DPDR when you're stressed. And my tics only grow with intensity and happen more with stress.
So yeah, I'm sorry if I upset anyone with this, but I sincerely think people should be aware that these are different things and different experiences. I would not want to say I'm something more serious if I'm not absolutely sure, and if your symptoms *are* more constant, maybe look further. It goes both ways.
#post.txt#fnd#tics#functional neurological disorder#motor tics#hey please don't erase FND from existing... i know its a pretty controversial diagnosis#but like... that doesn't mean it doesn't happen this way

While there is clinical evidence to disprove anxiety tics; the same evidence doesn't exist quite as well for tics in FND (functional neurological disorder) but from my personal opinion as a university researcher in the topic;
I didn't think tics exist in FND, assuming FND is even a thing and not just a passive diagnosis of mainly AFAB people who are too "clinically difficult".
A lot of tics that happened during childhood are ignored until they're exacerbated during puberty and finally making them noticable or there is something like PANS/PANDAS/BGE going which is brain inflammation.
I've been academically studying tics for YEARS and the only validated evidence for tics comes from Tic Disorders, Tourettes Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, neurological degenerative brain diseases, temporal lobe epilepsy, side-effects from antipsychotic medications, or toxins in the environment like lead exposure.
There is just... Such a lack of support that literally ANYTHING other than these disorders can CAUSE tics. And yet, so many people are ignorantly diagnosed and they deserve so much better and there are actual answers out there if they can get the access.
