Other causes of tics that do not come from Tourettes or a tic disorder:
-Head trauma/TBI -Parkinsonism -PANS/PANDAS/BGE -Medication reactions (Tardive Dyskinesia) -Temporal epilepsies -Degenerative brain diseases -Function Neurological Disorder
Things that DO NOT cause tics:
-Anxiety disorders -OCD -Autism -ADHD -PTSD -Any mental illness because tics are NEUROLOGICAL and come from dysfunction in the Basal Ganglia.
**DO NOT ask me for sources proving anxiety tics don't exist because you can do that YOURSELF (or look through my blog because I already have PLENTY). In fact- try and find studies to show they DO exist because you WON'T**
**DO NOT rb with with "tw tics" or you will be blocked**

reminder again that anxiety, ocd, autism, adhd, trauma, fnd, pandas/pans, etc., do NOT cause tics
if you have tics you have a tic disorder
if you have at least two motor tics and one vocal tic you have tourette syndrome
also remember that there's a lot of different types of involuntary movements

I’m trying to immerse myself a little more in the ticcing disorder/Tourette’s community on here to become more knowledgeable, but one thing I’m seeing a lot of people saying is “oh my god you can’t catch tics from TikTok”, however wouldn’t that go against the theory of things like echopraxia, echolalia (sorry if these are the wrong terms/different terms, etc.). Is that something that’s a debate within the community, kind of like “syscourse” in plural communities? Another thing I’ve seen is people vehemently denying that you can have “anxiety”/“stress” tics, but I’ve also seen other people say they’ve been yelled at for faking Tourette’s because they have these kinds of anxiety/stress tics. Is that something that’s also debated, or do you have any better sources for that?
I definitely understand the confusion here.
In short, no, you cannot "catch" tics from anywhere. Meaning that if you don't already have a tic disorder, you can't develop one from watching tiktoks. However, if you already have a tic disorder (or are already developing one), you can gain tics that you see other people do. For example, I've had tics since I was little but during the pandemic, I did pick up a few tics that were common amongst Tourette's influencers.
In response to your second point about anxiety tics, anxiety alone does not cause cause tics, but it can exacerbate tics that are already there. Like, when someone is stressed they will probably tic more. People without tic disorders who have anxiety can definitely have stims, that may present like tics, but anxiety alone doesn't cause actual tics the same way a tic disorder does.
I hope this helps! And honestly, these are great questions!

anxiety cannot cause tics
this idea is based in medical sexism

So tired of having to debate over whether anxiety can cause tics. People should simply stop being misinformed

i think i forget sometimes that not everyone tics. not everyone even knows what tics are or that you can’t always suppress/mask them.
i’ve been having a huge spike of them recently (probably due to graduation being around the corner) and i’m constantly making grunts and noises. they are annoying, they do hurt my throat, i do get stuck doing them until they ‘feel right’ and finally i’m set free of a loop.
but the child i’m babysitting and my brother asked why i keep making noises. i hadn’t realized i must’ve been making them. but i got flustered; how do i describe to these kids the concept of nearly not being able to control your own body sometimes? being stuck repeating the same tic until your brain thinks it’s okay to stop?
* i’d qualify for provisional tic disorder, but i’ve never been diagnosed bc it wasn’t ‘impeding my life.’ my pediatrician actually told us that if they get worse to tell her/get help on it. i was meant to get diagnosed for it bc it was bothering me but yk lol

I cant find an answer online so i'm here now
so what's the difference between anxiety twitches and tics? I know they are both different things and are caused by different parts of the brain, but what the actual fuck do anxiety twitches look like?? no matter where i search there is no in depth explanation or example, so what does it look like? Plus, are anxiety twitches triggered by seeing someone tic? are tics even triggered by seeing someone tics?? because i see or even hear someone talk about tics and suddenly my head starts jerking uncontrollably. i dont really make noises but sometimes when i twitch real bad i start squeaking. Also i get anxiety tics when i'm not even anxious??? i mean, my leg tends to twitch and bounce uncontrollably when i'm having an anxiety attack, but my head kinda just jerks whenever. are tics painful? Because my twitches are. Idk, are twitches consistant? Do they repeat over and over again in a row? i'm so confused rn someone please explain this me
i'm pretty certain its just anxiety twitches but i just want to make sure because they're kinda weird.

While I always encourage people with tics to see a neurologist, I want to be very clear that unfortunately, most are still INCREDIBLY misinformed on tic disorders and Tourettes syndrome and if you're AFAB with tics, getting a proper diagnoses is even harder.
"Anxiety tics" is a term used to refer to a group of anxious behaviours such as nail biting, toe tapping, hair twirling, neck rubbing and the like; whereas tics are brief, purposeless sounds or movements that can be worsened by anxiety but NEVER caused by it.
Anxiety tics are not a diagnosis, does not exist in the DSM or IDC, nor is there any clinical validity to its causation or how its mechanisms would even work.
Remember your rights as a patient and never be afraid to ask for a second opinion.

genuinely what are people teaching kids about mental illness/health, especially on tiktok. i was told i can’t use the term “tics” for my INVOLUNTARY ANXIOUS TICS because it’s only for people with Tourette’s.
i was not told this on tiktok, but in the real world by someone who did not know any better. i had to explain to him that that is not a thing and whoever told him that lied.

I used to get anxiety based tics and when I got an updated dose of medication because my body has grown and needs more the tics stopped almost completely and I remember being so scared that I had been subconsciously faking tics which looking back was stupid because they sucked like really bad and I hated them and I’m literally just realizing now at 12:11 am sat jul 15 that I have anxiety tics and I wasn’t somehow faking without me knowing

Vent! (Do I say “tic culture is…”?)
So basically I have had a single and nearly invisible but highly painful tic since I was a toddler. And a year and a half ago I developed a few new one, but less painful but much more obvious. And this past week I have gotten HUGE vocal tics. Yelling included. I even hit myself now. Anyways, I am on a wait list for getting tested for ADHD, will they include Tourette’s in the eval? How do I come at this socially, especially since there is a girl who WILL make fun of me. How do I make this be less stressful on my family? What about my cat??? (She hates me right now since I am jerking a lot and startle her.)
Thanks, that’s all, byee!!!
#tics #tourettes #help me please I might cry
