Postcards from Snagglepuss

As if Free Ice Water wasn't impetus enough to stop, to begin with

WALL DRUG STORE, WALL, SD: Our motley motorhome crew, stopping at such a legendary roadside venue built on the offer of Free Ice Water for the sake of parched and thirsty motorists heading towards Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone even--obviously not to be confused with Jellystone there--and offering plenty more, to begin with. Just killing a few hours in what was hoped to be relative obscurity until, as we headed to the Back Yard of Wall Drug, just as an audioanimatronic T. Rex was going into his routine--

"So, uh, how exactly did you find us?" asked Huckleberry Hound.

We had just stumbled upon Peter Potamus, starched safari jacket, pith helmet, the whole ball of wax even. "If I may just explain ..."

Never mind that the weather for the Badlands region of South Dakota, where Wall is situate, was pretty warm at the time, our company was warming up to what Peter Potamus was about to say.

"I just thought it would be a surprise to mention to you all," Peter explaineth, "that we of the Magic Divers have a little underwater ceremony forthcoming." Which certainly brought surprise unto Hokey Wolf, Ding-a-Ling, Wally Gator and Squiddly Diddly, themselves part of the dive troupe. "To which Huckleberry Hound and Snagglepuss are the honorees."

Which had Huckleberry asking Peter what we were being honoured for, to begin with.

"If I could just let Hokey explain," Peter remarked. Then to Hokey:

"You see, boys, the Peter Potamus Magic Divers have chosen to initiate you into Honourary Membership of our diving circle, a part of our madcap little dive experience! Which will no doubt allow you, if you so desire, access to our diving adventures, as if Snagglepuss wasn't something of a diving addict in his own way!"

Which had yours truly noting that winter at the La Jolla diving compound for the group, as well as a few days with Peter at a remote Polynesian atoll via the Magic Balloon and return--"Oh yeah, Snagglepuss; now that you mention it," Peter responded, "wasn't that atoll especially fascinating from a diving standpoint?"

"Heavens to Cousteau!" saith I. "And what about our times in the Florida Keys over the last couple of winters, including that excursion to Theater of the Sea to illustrate why places of that ilk aren't exactly the best for swimming among dolphins?!"

"Thank you for reminding me!" Peter remarked. Continuing:

"Now, as for the locale: There happens to be a rather charming lake up by Stillwater, Minnesota called Square Lake, which happens to be popular among Midwestern divers for its sheer clarity. Its depth averages about 30-40 feet, with its deepest spot 68 feet below the surface. And such is where I plan to hold our underwater initiation and welcome ceremony with our diving troupe!"

"It's certainly glad," Wally Gator observed, "to get back underwater in the dive getup, don't you know--even if such is in such an esoteric place such as Minnesota. But believe you me, such is bound to beat that kiddy pool I was given at the City Zoo under Mr. Twiddles, until he lost his memory and the zoo started falling apart!"

"Oh, and let's not forget," Hokey Wolf added, "when we were diving Lake Minnetonka for our TV series!" To which Peter thanked Hokey for that little aide-memoire there.

Over some buffalo burgers in the Western Art Gallery Cafe did the conversation and the planning continue--and for some reason, Augie Doggie found the buffalo burger rather intriguing, if the taste was a little different than hamburger. As did your correspondent.

At any rate, we were somewhat stunned to find Peter Potamus' Magic Balloon in one of Wall's several backstreet parking lots for the benefit of Wall Drug visitors, to which Wally, Squiddly, Hokey and Ding repaired to with Peter as a sort of "advance party" for the Square Lake ceremony. Peter mentioned that he'd be calling the other members of the troupe to have them be ready to assemble at Square Lake Park in a couple days' time, he'd supply the gear and all that....

"Golly, Snag," Chuckleberry remarked. "Now that's going to be an experience, even if it means travelling for a couple of days out via I-90 for the most part!" Enough to inspire us to get our trusty Thermos bottles and fill up with Wall Drug's legendary 5-cent coffee. Which, even for a Thermos bottle, was quite the bargain.

And just hope for the best all the way for the next 550 miles or so.

Earlier this year, I underwent another biopsy for my recurrent lymphoma. This involved chest surgery removing part of one rib to access the enlarged lymph node. After surgery and a suitable recovery period, we headed away to what we now know as the recovery ward aka Ramp Road, freedom camping. Sadly during winter, I developed a terrible cough and managed to cause a lung hernia underneath the scar on my chest. Nothing too painful as long as I don’t cough, sneeze or worst of all laugh.

A few weeks ago our motorhome mates John and Gaylene messaged us that they were organising a trip to the far North. With the first stop back at the recovery ward. I told them we would love to come, I just had to get an appointment with the Cardiothoracic surgeon out of the way first, and then we would be up there.

Hoping for some miracle band-aid treatment, I was disappointed to hear that there really wasn’t a surgical cure and that a fix would likely make the pain worse. So this leaves me with what my own doctor called a really neat party trick. A small balloon of lung that blows out of my chest every time I cough, sneeze or laugh.

Doctors appointment out of the way, we made our way north to the recovery ward or as its more commonly known Ramp Road. I’ve done a few blogs about this place and in each one I have mentioned the road into the camping area. If you are precious about your motorhome, you won’t be coming here. If however, you can handle a bit of the rough stuff then the short journey to the beach is well and truly worthwhile.

Usually, when we have come here, we have found our mates parked along the beachfront. This time we saw them set back from the beach on what is one of the few semi-flat spots here.

It seemed like we had only just parked the motorhome before it was time to get out fishing. Tokerau Beach is a haven for people with Kontiki’s be they motorised or sent out on a kite. Adrian and Sally have a Predator, motorised torpedo, that had been playing up before we arrived. After some fiddling with the start switch, Adrian had been able to get it going. With both of us looking forward to a decent feed of snapper.

We always have a guessing game as the line starts to come in about the numbers of fish that will be landed. On this occasion, I guessed 4 with 5 actually hooked although we returned 2 to live another day. Like me, Adrian believes if you have to measure them, they are too small.

The following morning was the battle of Mrs Wishy Washy mark 1 and mark 2. Not really a battle more like two ladies with the same idea. Tips and, ideas were swapped and I think both benefited from a chat about the machines. If you are looking for a machine they no longer sell these new but are available on Trade Me from time to time usually between $50 and $100. They only weigh 14kgs so a lightweight and easy to manouvere.

Later in the morning with the washing sorted. We went for a stroll through the sand dunes that run alongside the beach. The abundance of flowers everywhere was really a sight to behold. Also, present in colossal number where snails which seemed to be all over the place. Maybe the full moon had dictated that it was time to mate or migrate, whatever the reason they were everywhere.

Walking back along the beach, we came across some locals in the process of retrieving their Kontiki, from the surf. It had broken loose the previous day and was sitting 60 or 70 metres from shore. They had scoured the length of the beach in the hope of finding it spotting it quite close to where it had been lost. One of them had gone out on a kayak through the surf to get it back.

Talking about getting lost. Later that day, another couple, John and Margaret, struck trouble trying to retrieve their Kontiki.  Having had their line out for a while, they started bringing it in only to have the line snag on something. Despite moving position on the beach and trying from different angles, they were unable to get it to budge. Various people from the camp came to try and help with nothing working.

I don’t know whose idea it was, but someone decided to ask one of the freedom campers, who also happened to be a surfer to help. He paddled out a couple of hundred metres, to try and retrieve the stuck Kontiki. At $3-5000, it’s not something you really want to lose. After a bit of a struggle, the Kontiki was returned to a very grateful owner.

With the Kontiki freed from the line, John was able to retrieve his long line and with it came two other lines in the tangle. One of these lines (not John’s) contained several fish including the 15lb snapper you can see in the above photo. I assume that this was the line that was lost the previous day as the fish were still fresh. Although the large one was dead, it tasted great smoked the next day.

Recently, for my birthday, two of my son’s had given me this Man Cave sign. Which I thought would be fabulous on the motorhome. My question here is inside or outside the door?

With another day of adventure (or misadventure) packed away. There was one final thing to do, try and get that perfect shot of the sun going down behind the flax.

Or try and capture the light reflecting off the motorhomes next to the beach. Whichever way you looked it was the perfect end to another fabulous day motorhoming.

No doubt this won’t be the last time I post about this place. There always seems to be another story to write and another adventure to be had. If you haven’t made the trip North, then I sincerely recommend that you come and spend a few days here at my recovery ward.

Road Trip around Kent

Hi, I am Marie and my husband is Drew. We hope you like our blog based on our recent visit to Kent. Welcome to Jenkins Journeys, cycling, and adventuring through life. 

I had received a number of recommendations to visit Kent and as I had never been before, we decided to do it as a road trip to get the most out of the visit. We decided to hire a Motor Home and was delighted to pick up a spotless 6 berth Ford Chausson MotorHome from Motor Home Hire UK. It was a comfortable and easy drive especially as this was my first time hiring a motorhome. The vehicle came with all the extra’s you need, such as electric hook up, gas cylinder and kitchenware.

Day 1

We decided to head towards Epping Forest for our first night, as we are keen cyclists we thought it would be great to explore the area and find a campsite that was close to the Forest. Once in the area, we came across Debden House Campsite. It is a conference centre and had 6 large fields for the use of campers and large groups. It cost us £32 for the night which is more than what we would usually pay for a pitch, but as it was on the edge of the Forest we decided to stay for the one night. After a cozy sleep in the double bed above the driver's cabin, we set off for Whitstable, which we decided would be our next overnight stop. 

Day 2

We traveled across the Dartford Crossing along to Rochester,( it is important to note that you must log on to the website and pay your crossing charge before midnight on the day you travel), this was for a quick comfort break and I am glad we did as this was our first sightseeing stop, as there was lots of history in the area and an impressive Castle sitting proudly in the centre of the town. I especially liked the wonky buildings.

We arrived in Whitstable mid-afternoon and after a drive along the seafront out of town we came across Sea View Holiday Park. It has lots of static caravans, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that they had a touring site and offered pods right next to the entertainment area and washing facilities. 

As we wanted to explore the immediate area we decided to stop for the next 3 nights. The touring site was literally a stone’s throw (or pebble throw) on to the pebbly beach, with a long promenade. Once we had set up the motorhome, filling up the water tank and getting our set up right we headed out on our bikes back up the prom to Whitstable. It was a fantastic ride along a wide concrete prom passing lots of beach huts and bars and restaurants. As the area is famous for its Oyster Farm it was no surprise to learn that many of the restaurants offer wonderful seafood menu’s. As it was Sunday late afternoon most of the shops on the high street were shut, but it had lots of small independent shops and had a quaint feel to it.

Day 3

We were up early because we wanted to get out on our bikes and cycle along to Margate. As it turned out we traveled a lot further and made it to Ramsgate, this was partly due to the fantastic prom that made cycling along the coastline so much easier. The trail along the prom is called the Oyster trail and it leads on to the Viking trail, it is well signposted but given that your following on one path it is easy to navigate anyway.

After leaving our campsite the first area we came in to was Herne Bay, we stuck to the trail but it seemed like a beautiful area. Just after the bay, the trail heads away from the beach, however, we decided to push our bikes along the pebbly beach to do some beachcombing. Once around the Bay, we rejoined the trail and came to Reculver Castle Towers, an interesting stop for a quick refreshment break. 

We continued on to Margate and popped into the town for a quick look around and then continued on the trail along the way we passed some stunning coastline, namely Botany Bay, Viking Bay, and Broadstairs. Due to the time of year, there was a number of tourists but we were able to cycle along at an easy pace without having to dismount.

We reached Ramsgate and this was a pleasant surprise, it had a lovely old fashion seaside feel to the town and we visited a wonderful Fish and Chip Shop that was a well-deserved treat after the 25 plus miles ride. After sitting on the beach to enjoy our fish supper and ushering the seagulls, we took the cycle back. Lucky for us the wind was behind us and we arrived back at the campsite early evening, after a full day cycling and sightseeing.

Day 4

The next day we headed inland and took the Crab and Winkle trail on our bikes to Canterbury. The ride from our site was approx 8-9 miles along a disused railway line through gorgeous countryside and woodland. We visited Canterbury Cathedral which we believe is a must to visit when you're in town. It is steeped in history and was undergoing major renovation work, and has masses to see and learn. The town itself had lots of mini shop fronts and they also have punt trips along the Great Stour from West Gate. Here the wonky shops continued.

After speaking with a lady on the gates of the Cathedral that lives in Whitstable we decided to stop off for a seafood lunch in Whitstable, at Wheelers Restaurant. It was a quaint restaurant, with a large selection on the menu. We chose a fishcake starter and a seafood Mezze. We were instructed that the restaurant only takes cash payments and if you want a glass of wine with your meal there is an Offy across the road with a large selection of local beers and ales. So plenty to try while enjoying your meal.

On our way back to the campsite we picked up some fresh Oysters from the Whitstable Oyster Company, we paid £10 for 6 super fresh Oysters. We took them away and had them for our evening meal. It was great to hear about the history of the Oysters in the area and it was interesting to learn that this farm has over 10 million Oysters just off the shoreline.

Day 5

After packing up and moving on, we had decided to head towards Hastings and we came across a sign for Bodiam Castle as a member of the National Trust and after seeing it in our book we decided to do a slight detour and visit the Medieval castle ruins, its a wonderful sight to see, surrounded by a motto. It is one of the most impressive picturesque castles to go and see.

Due to our impromptu visit, we decided to find a campsite in the Royal Tunbridge Wells area, this was partly due to the fact that there is a number of National Trust sites to visit in the area that we wanted to visit. We had a quick google and found what we thought was a campsite called Sunninglye Farm. On arrival down a small lane, we were met by a lovely lady called Jill, she explained that they are a working farm but also have 7 stunning camping lodges or safari tents as we would call them. Although they are not set up as a campsite, she was kind enough to offer us the opportunity to park up our motorhome on their bottom sheep field close by to the communal shower block. We excepted graciously because it seemed like such a lovely location and we were not disappointed. We had two fabulous nights here and will definitely return in the future to stay in their lodges, it's a wonderful site and has lots to offer for families or groups. On this afternoon we cycled just a few miles into Royal Tunbridge Wells, the town had a number of architecturally interesting buildings but you could also see that the town is having a huge amount of upgrading and investment.

We had the privilege of cooking some of Jill’s home-reared pork in their pizza oven and it was great to make new friends of the farm animals. The chickens are free-range and would often wander around by where you sit. Take a look at their fantastic lodges. I particularly liked that the lighting was by gas lamps and you use a log burner as a stove. They had 3 bedrooms, 2 double and one was bunk beds. I think 2 of the lodges had ensuite showers but all lodges had their own toilet. Each lodge had stunning views of the countryside.

Day 6

This was a final day so we headed out on our bikes to visit Scotney Castle which was approx 8 miles from our site, this stretch was a little hilly for novice cyclists but the effort is well worth it when you reach this National Trust site with a detour to the small village of Lamberhurst. This is by far my favorite NT site, there is so much to see here. The house which was lived in by Betty Hussey, right up to recent times 2006. Its a beautiful time capsule of how she used to live, but then you have the stunning old castle and folly which you can view from the library window and explore. It’s important to add that the cafe and walled garden are worth a visit too. We did want to visit Chatwell House the home of Winston Churchill while we were in the area but we just ran out of time. So great reason to return to the area. 

Day 7

Today we were heading home but on route, we decided to visit Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury, which is a French-style Chateau, previously owned by the Rothchild Family. The restaurant was superior for this type of national trust site, but we chose a traditional English Cream Tea, which was a welcome snack before we explored the impressive interior rooms of this impressive building. Again this was a wonderful property with lots of magnificent artworks and sculptures. You could spend a full day at this site but we were heading home, so we could clean the van in readiness to return it in the morning.

This is our first time in the Kent area and we were blown away by the number of things to see and do and we know we only scratched the surface. The motorhome experience was one we would also do again without hesitation. We have had a fantastic holiday and we crammed lots in and we would say if you're considering a holiday to somewhere new this is an area of the UK that is definitely worth your consideration. The people we have met have been friendly and extremely helpful and the changing landscapes from Coastlines to woodlands have been a joy.  Right I'm off to plan our next journey, wild camping the southwest coast path in Cornwall in a few weeks.

“I think it was a bird,” said Dave. We wandered through the trees for several hours, allowing our eyes to develop night vision as owls heralded their presence with hoots, but to no avail. The dormouse had eluded me.

Next day I made my way south. The sun’s heat had warmed up the limestone rocks found in the town of Ventnor and before I had even greeted Dave in the car park of the Botanic Gardens, my fourth contender put in an appearance: the wall lizard. A non-endemic species, these small (around 8in) reptiles sport a yellow-green saddle on their backs, foiled beautifully by their otherwise mottled brown skin, and have been adopted by Isle of Wight residents as a prized species.

“Scientists believe they came from Italy – released illegally in the 1920s,” explained Dave as we watched a particularly fluorescent specimen pose next to a purple flower. “But some claim they are descendants from survivors of a shipwreck in the late 1800s.” We counted at least 15 that afternoon. 

That evening I headed to the beach at Thorness Bay, just before sunset. Sadly, despite lingering in the shallows for two hours I saw no stingrays: just seaweed, blenny fish and the odd shore crab. 

Just as I was about to call time on my search, I saw a fisherman casting his line into the water. “You’d need to come back in June or July,” he said when I told him of my quest. “After a warm day, keep an eye on the shingle bank and you can see them whip their tails in the water.”

I thanked him for his advice before ­stopping to ask for his name. “Ray,” he said, inevitably. Does that count, I wondered? I decided it probably did.

Heading away on these shorter trips over winter/early spring we always try and look at the long range forecast to see what the weather is going to do. This time it was showing a fairly large low appearing to be parked over Northland that helped us make the decision to head south on this trip. Each time we have stopped in Taupo we have tried to stay in a different place to experience more and also to have something new to share on the blog.

I had read really good reports on various Facebook posts about the National Equestrian Centre located to the north east of Taupo and convinced Sarah this would be a good place to stay. At $5 per person per night plus $5 per vehicle if you want power it’s reasonably priced for a facility like this. It also has a dump station, water, toilets, free shower, kitchen and washing machines, although finding them is another story.

  The NZMCA directory and App mentions to come in through gate 1 although that was shut so we came through gate 2. The registration booth is located next to the toilets and easy to spot. The fun part was with the wind constantly blowing the door shut and with no interior light it made it a job for two people to register. One to hold the door open and the other to complete the paperwork.

The map in the registration booth shows a large parking area on the grassed area overlooking one of the arenas. The power boxes are scattered along here so if the place was full there might not be power for everyone, or you may not be able to get close enough to point for your plug to reach. The ablutions block is clean and tidy, well set up but for some reason there is no shower in the mens, so it’s either use the disabled shower  (unisex) or the one in your own van.

  We found ourselves a nice spot a bit further forward than what you can see in the photos but a rather large tree prevented the aerial from tuning in, nessistating moving the van back so that the evening news could be watched.

  With the van parked up it was off for our usual explore of the area. This complex is absolutely huge and although we didn’t need the dump station we wanted to find where it was as well as the location of the laundry facilities as there is nothing in the sign in booth to tell you where they are.

  To the left of the campsite looking from the road is gate 3 which leads to the above information board which sadly still doesn’t tell you where the dump station is located. Interestingly the last hazard written on the board dates from 2016 so you have nothing to fear entering this site!

  Mission accomplished! In the far left corner of the grounds are a set of portacoms, which are available as accomodation for the night if needed. It’s here that the kitchen and laundry are located although I only found this out later so never got any photos. Then behind the portacoms is the dump station. A little signage or an instructional map somewhere would be of great benefit to newbies such as us visiting this place.

  As you would expect the National Equestrian Centre is all about the horses and although there was a marked absence of them on the day of our visit I am assured that they are usually there in great numbers, especially over the weekends. Given the volume of stables and the size of the arena’s including this huge indoor one it’s obviously built with this in mind.

  From the equestrian centre it’s just a short walk or drive down the road to the point where it splits into two one way to the Rapid’s Jet, boat ride which we chose not to do on this occasion but maybe on another visit.  Rates currently are at $129 for a 35 minute ride although we found a special on http://www.grabone.co.nz for only $69 so make sure you check for specials before parting with any money. Speaking with the staff here they told us about the dam release at various times and to make sure we went to look.

  The other fork in the road takes you on about a 20 minute walk towards a bridge over the river and a power station. As we wandered along the road we noticed an overpowering smell from the side of the road, going to investigate we discovered the remains of a number of sheep as well as a goat. So we wondered if some rustling and dumping had been going on.

Arriving at the bridge over the river here we could see the remnants of the release flowing over the rapids just up the river. It was also interesting to see what looks like a really good spot for some freedom camping with a large area just before the dam but a check of Campermate doesn’t show any camping here so not sure if it is allowed.

  We decided that we would spend another night in Taupo and move onto another destination making a stop first to see the opening of the dam gates at 12 noon which despite looking upside down here will play the right way. (I really do have to work out this issue). More about this in the next post.

So would we stay again at the National Equestrian Centre, the answer to this is yes in fact we have already (The blog is a few days behind real life). Away from the hustle and bustle of busier places like 5 Mile Bay but still close enough to all the major attractions.
