Material Matters: Choosing Mediums for Impact

When deciding how to bring my ideas to life, I always ask: What medium will best serve the message? Hand painting allows me to connect physically with the work, every stroke an extension of emotion. Procreate lets me refine details and push surreal elements, blending fantasy with reality. Vector rendering, on the other hand, gives me precision—sharp, intentional forms that contrast organic textures.

For my senior thesis, I’m experimenting with all of these. The choice of medium isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about how the message is felt.

I'm building a Video Feedback Table with lights and a glass tabletop. Here are some process pictures. I'm building this in a small place. Bless the mess. Hell yeah let's go

So I didn't record the actual painting process BUT my steps are

1. Draw the piece digitally to figure out line work and plan color placement. Obviously the final piece will look quite a bit different since it's handmade and all that, but this really helps figuring out a base to improve from

2. Trace just the lineart onto tracing paper (or print it out to save yourself from drawing it a million times). Then you'll lay that pattern on top of some graphite paper and then on top of the fabric, which I don't have a picture of but oh well

3. Now you get to paint it!!! This is the fun part, and also the part where your hard work can betray you. I used acrylic gouache for this piece - it's like a happy medium where it's nice and opaque without bleeding like watercolor does, and without getting cakey like acrylic

And then you get to stitch!! I also painted the infernal with acrylic so it would be just a little distinct from the background without being as prominent as his features.
