This past weekend was so wonderful and the most fun~. One thing I love about gatherings is discovering and learning more about myself! I thought I was really awkward with physical touch and can’t do pick-up play; turns out touching isn’t so bad LOL, and I can pick-up play and still be quite ticklish~. 🤭 Everyone I interacted with was super respectful and knew how to healthily communicate, and were just cool in general! I definitely feel growth and recovery, and it’s all really thanks to those who attended! ❤️
Claimed 2 more Silly Little Tickle Boys™ for myself~. 🍽
I got mummified in saran wrap and tickled in it for the first time by my tickle crush whatever, it was THE MOST FUN! They got me so bad~. 🤤 I already miss it. I think what made me so much more ticklish was that I could squirm and struggle but still be helpless and restricted~. I also got to try doorway bondage (where the cuffs are at the top of a closed door, your arms are bound above you) horrible.. embarrassing honestly, ew, wore a blindfold because scary. Then I tried their under the bed restraints in spread eagle~. 🥰 I was also told I may have the most ticklish back…. hng… I’m gonna thank all my hard working out for that~. ᕙ(≧ω≦)ᕗ✧ And then I’m surprisingly very feather ticklish and I apparently like pipe cleaners between the toes now and that head massager thing..~ They think I’m more ticklish than I say I am um ya who cares lol I care and I’m so ticklish now!! Anyway that was the highlight of my weekend~!! 🥳
Got revenge the next day, claiming Tickle Boy #1~. So ticklish …. Oh my god… so fueling.. I’m excited for next time~. May have been told I’m pretty mean~ :)c
Clay and I finally got to live out the fantasy of ganging up on someone together~!! 🎉 Thank you to Cam @jerjero for being our first victim and my second Tickle Boy~. You were a ton of fun and had super cute reactions.. also I love cake~. 😋 And thanks for tag teaming Clay with me after~. Now someone else personally knows just how adorable and fun Clay is~.
I met fellow asexual Joe @brushtickler! Had a great one-on-one and we had a lovely trial session on the very last day at the end of the night.. and we had no idea who each other was on Tumblr until it was time to say goodbye on Monday!! :O It was so great meeting you and I’m honoured that I helped make your first gathering fun! I also enjoyed being the one you tested your new prizes on~. :)c You are the brush tickler.. I was definitely brush tickled.. 😵‍💫. Also your negotiating skills are amazing, I have questions to take from our negotiating and will be applying them in the future~. Thank you for attending and being part of my amazing weekend! 🥰
Not tickle related but I won a “Netflix and Chill” basket from a raffle, filled with a ton of snacks and candies~!! The biggest thing is called Toad-Ally Snax.. I’m pretty sure it was destined I would win~. 😋

Flower Fields: Chapter 2
Chapter 1
Notes: Again, all credit to @give-grian-rights (hope you don’t mind the tag!) for the concept! Thank you so much! Also almost forgot to post this on Tumblr rip.
No fighting wars, no ringing chimes
We're just feeling fine
Tubbo started out by building his starter base.
It was a concept he’d learned about while living with Xisuma, and it was quite a good one, too. After all, megabases worthy of Hermitcraft’s admittedly lofty standards often took months to build, and he’d need somewhere to live in the meantime. In Season 6, he’d neglected that fact, and had suffered his fair share of mob deaths before he put up four walls and a ceiling to protect himself, back when he’d left to live on his own. And that was with a small, quickly-thrown together base, not the project he was currently planning.
Still, even setting up the basics of his starter base took a few nearly sleepless days. Finally, the framework for the build, a treehouse spanning more than a few trees at the edge of the forest, was up, and Tubbo was finally able to place a bed down in safety and sleep for a solid fourteen hours straight.
Xisuma dropped by, quite literally, a day or so later.
Tubbo had been sitting in his quickly-expanding living room, sorting through the loot he’d gotten from yesterday’s day-long mining session when he swooped down through the half-finished roof. While he was still wearing his bee-themed armor, now there were two glider-like wings, shimmering purple, strapped to his back.
“Heya, X,” Tubbo greeted the admin with a wave, closing one of his chests. “You got elytra already?”
“Tango and I defeated the Ender Dragon yesterday,” Xisuma replied, touching down softly. Tubbo made an ‘ah’ sound, recalling the achievement he’d seen out of the corner of his eye the other day. Right; he’d forgotten about that. Trust X to be as efficient as possible and defeat one of the toughest monsters in the world just for the ease of travel.
“I’ll have to go endbusting soon, then,” he said, more to himself than X. Before the elder man could protest (ah, he was getting good at noticing when he was going to), he added: “Stress and xB have already asked me to go with them, so don’t worry , alright?”
“Good,” Xisuma sighed. “It’s never a good idea to go out on your own, especially since this’ll be your first time seriously exploring the End.”
Tubbo rolled his eyes good naturedly. To be fair, he hadn’t gone out to the End before it had been conquered before. He’d had a fair few trips last Season, mostly with X, but it was generally for the XP farm once it’d been set up. He’d never left the main island before. Now that he had considerably more freedom at the beginning of the Season, he was excited to go exploring.
“Anything bring you over?” He asked, changing the subject.
Xisuma nodded. “Yeah. A bunch of the others are getting together for some sort of wrestling tournament this weekend.”
“And I’ve been invited?!” He grinned, clapping his hands together.
“As the referee.”
“Ah,” he pouted. “Darn.”
“Don’t worry,” Xisuma chuckled, setting down a shulker box. “It can be a lot funner to watch sometimes; I’m just going to be part of the audience, too. I think Doc wanted you because he thinks he can bribe you.”
“He can not !”
Xisuma raised an eyebrow. “Area 77.”
“Oh, that’s not fair. I am completely unbiased!”
“And that was why you became their lawyer and not for all the cool experiments they had. I don’t think Cleo has forgiven you for defeating her in court.”
“No one can defeat Big Law,” Tubbo sniffed, faux-offended, and Xisuma laughed. “Well, I’ll show him!” He declared, crossing his arms. “I’ll just have to make sure he loses, then!” Xisuma blinked, and he laughed. “Kidding! Kidding!” Mostly .
“So you’re going?”
“Sure! It’s nice to see the Hermits all in one place, anyways. What’s in the shulker?”
Xisuma tilted his head teasingly. “What do you think? Someone had to get the supplies for our honey farm.”
Tubbo gaped. “You’re ready to build farms already?! Man, and I thought I was ahead of the game with just having my base halfway done.”
The armored man shrugged, looking about the partially completed build. “Well, you’ve certainly put more effort into this than me. Truly, your building skills are already improving. I love how you’re styling the roof with peaks like you are; it looks like it took a while.”
“My last house had a roof like that, too,” Tubbo reminded him, glancing up as well. It had become a tradition, of sorts, to build curved, peaked roofs onto his builds. Last season it had been one of the few things he’d built slowly to make look as good as possible. In all honesty, it was his own way of honoring the person who’d made it possible for him to come here, to have a life worth living once again. Rushing through the technique just felt disrespectful.
“Yes, but you’ve definitely gotten better.” Xisuma bent down over the shulker box, checking its contents. “Do you have any good ideas for where to make the bee farm? I’ll admit, I’ve been a bit too busy to scout out a good area.”
“Really? Then where’d you get these guys?”
“Tree farming in the desert.”
Tubbo snorted into his hand, and he could practically feel Xisuma’s embarrassment. “Well, you did say you hadn’t scouted out a good spot.”
“Indeed I did.”
“I can take a look around here and see what I can find. Meadows are supposed to be excellent places for farming bees, right?”
“Indeed it is,” Xisuma agreed. “Do you have plans for your megabase, yet?”
Tubbo nodded, grinning. “And trust me, it’s going to be awesome .”
............
Two days later, a chicken appeared in his base. Tubbo found it laying an egg in what was starting to become the base’s storage area, with one of his shirts nearly ripped to shreds in what appeared to be a makeshift nest.
There was a nametag wrapped around its leg. After some chicken wrangling and a few feathers to the face, he got a good look at it and realized there wasn’t a name written there, but a set of coordinates.
A set of coordinates rather far away, but who was he to turn down such an intriguing mystery?
With the chicken now renamed Wilbur and placed in a pen (he’d needed a chicken farm anyways), Tubbo set out that morning with a few supplies to find the spot he was looking for. After crossing a fair bit of forest and ocean, by the next day he’d found himself cutting his way through the underbrush of an overgrown jungle and wondering why in the world Stress had wanted to wait a week before going to get their elytra.
He pushed a few low-hanging vines out of the way, checking his communicator for the upteenth time. He was getting closer, now. This better be worth going out a few hundred chunks in the middle of nowhere—hey, wait a minute!
There was smoke in the distance. He could just make it out through the leaves, and now that he concentrated, he could smell it, too. Tubbo rushed forwards, pushing through the brush to see several man-made wooden pillars sticking out. As he pressed forwards, he made out a semi-stone floor, several chests, and a small fire in the middle, explaining the smoke.
“What is this?” He asked himself, looking around the place. The coordinates were right, and yet no one was here. Just this outpost in the middle of the jungle.
Tubbo walked around. There were some papers pinned to the wall, and a few dispensers lying around. Idly he pressed the buttons on them, already starting to form a plan to enact revenge on whoever made him travel over a day to get this place.
He pressed the button on the dispenser in the middle of the build and nearly got an arrow to the face.
Tubbo yelped, his reflexes, honed from a half year of training, the only thing saving him from a sudden death. A bell rang behind him, but it took him a few more moments to calm his racing heart.
“Not funny! You nearly took my head off!” He shouted to the jungle. Still, he didn’t leave, instead turning to the bell the arrow had his, examining it. Huh.
There were some cookies in one of the chests, probably left behind by whoever had actually built the place. He nibbled on it, only half hungry, as he tried to examine the place better.
“HERMIT CHALLENGES!”
Tubbo shrieked , dropping the remains of his cookie as the voice rang through the forest air. He looked around, trying to find the source, but found that he couldn’t.
“INITIATION!”
A diamond-clad figure dropped out of the vines above, landing with a firm thud on one of the ground dispensers. He nearly lost his balance before righting himself with a huff.
“Mumbo!” Tubbo exclaimed, a little annoyed but mostly impressed.
“INITIATION!” He shouted at the top of his lungs. “HERMIT CHALLENGES! YOU ARE BEING INDUCTED.”
“How long have you been up there?! It took me over a day to get here.”
“No matter, Mr. Tubbo! Congratulations! You’re in!”
“...Thanks?”
“Of course, my friend! You have been inducted into Hermit Challenges! Of course, you could have eaten the entire cookie—” he glanced down at the crumbs at Tubbo’s feet. “But besides that you have acted perfectly.”
“Wait, what is Hermit Challenges?” Tubbo asked, blinking. What? This version of Mumbo was almost nothing like the Mumbo he’d seen at Spawn a mere week and a half ago. Who used chickens to deliver messages? Or perch in a tree for supposed hours on end?
Okay, he had to admit, that last one was pretty funny.
“Oh, it’s a game I’ve made up,” Mumbo continued. “Iskall and I have already had a go at it, and I figured I’d invite you next.”
“...Alright, then. How do I play?”
“It’s simple! Write down three challenges and put them in the dispenser. Then we’ll pick one at random from each other.”
Mumbo reached into one of the chests on the ground, taking out a sheath of paper and passing three to him with a pen. Tubbo looked at him, and Mumbo grinned.
“Go on! I’m sure you’ll have something fun in that head of yours.”
Ah, he was right. Tubbo gave in with a smile, leaning back and thinking briefly about what he wanted to challenge Mumbo. A few ideas came to mind, and he quickly scribbled them down, pushing them into one of the two dispensers on the side of the small build, Mumbo doing the same.
“Alright, then!” Mumbo announced with a smile. “You go first.”
Tubbo stepped towards Mumbo’s dispenser and clicked the button, causing a slip of paper to slide out. He unrolled it, then read it out loud.
“‘Steal everyone’s front doors for the rest of the season.’ What? The whole season?!”
Mumbo laughed. “Oh, that one! Man, you got the hardest one from me!”
“Well, I’m sure it’s nothing compared to what you’ll get from me.”
“We’ll see,” Mumbo said with a chuckle.  He moved across the platform, and pressed the button the dispenser Tubbo had put his challenges in. The dispenser whirred, and then another slip of paper popped out. Mambo picked it up and read off of it, face contorting as he did so. “...‘Act like you don’t believe in the moon for the next two weeks, and claim the sky is a hologram put up by the SCA (Secret Chickens Agency) to keep us from seeing the real overlords- the sky chickens.’ What?”
Tubbo snickered at that, covering his mouth with one hand. Oh, he was proud of that one.
“No, seriously, this is awfully specific.”
“What? It’s funny!”
“Funny for you!” But Mumbo was smiling, and Tubbo grinned back at him.
“I’m going to be having a fun few weeks,” he giggled.
“So am I,” Mumbo agreed with a raised eyebrow, tucking the slip of paper away. He clapped Tubbo’s shoulder. “I suppose I’ll have to make up a good story to go with this prompt.”
“And I have some doors to steal!” Tubbo laughed.
“Whoever gets the first complaint in chat wins?”
“You’re on!”

Lockscreen Tells All
Tumblr media
Summary: Peter gets a glimpse of how you see him through the lens and it opens up how you both truly feel.
Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader
This is a part of @blissfulparker‘s writing challenge to celebrate 5k!
The bell rang and the class around you transformed from dutiful students to heathens fighting to get out the door first. Patiently, you and your best friend MJ waited for the rest of your classmates to leave before gathering your belongings.
“Are you still cool with sleeping over this weekend, Y/N?” MJ asked as you two walked up to your side-by-side lockers.
“Absolutely! I’ve been so busy lately. It’s like all of the school events happen in the last month of school. Principal Morita has had me booked solid taking pictures.” You were shoving books in your locker aimlessly as tiredness was settling in your bones.
MJ slammed her locker and looked at you with excitement. “Well we’re not going to worry about that this weekend. We’re going to stock up on junk food, the guys are going to come over, and forget all about anything school related!”
Your heart picked up slightly at the thought of seeing Peter tonight. You hadn’t seen him all day so it made you even more excited. But you kept your face devoid of emotion in order to keep your crush on Peter Parker to yourself. You hadn’t told MJ and you weren’t planning on letting it slip in the school hallway.
MJ didn’t seem to notice your change in demeanor, instead she snatched your hand and shook it, squealing with you for a minute. Then she stopped and looked around, making sure no one had seen her. You giggled energetically and tangled your arm with hers.
“Let’s go, you dork!”
~~~
The windows were wide open to let the breeze flow through the room and MJ had the music cranked to an ungodly level. The two of you had changed into your pajamas and were dancing around the room, a thin layer of sweat on your skin.
It felt amazing to escape the strain of your current lifestyle even for just a few hours. MJ had forced you to promise that you wouldn’t use your camera for anything professional for the whole weekend and it hadn’t taken much to accept that stipulation.
Knock knock. MJ was lost in the music so you swayed your way to the front door, half expecting the pizza delivery boy. You swung the door open and froze in your spot as you came face to face with chocolate brown eyes, messy curls, and perfectly pouty lips. He looked adorable in a Stark Industries t-shirt that fit him wonderfully.
Instinctively, you reached up to tame your hair that had tangled into a hornets nest during your dance session. It was evident that it was a lost cause so you diverted to straightening your tank top and shorts instead.
Peter watched you with fascination and your stomach was erupting with butterflies as his gaze traveled along your face. Ned kept looking back and forth between the two of you, unaware of what was going on.
“Hi, Y/N. What have you and MJ been up too?” Ned broke in at last.
You turned your focus to Ned, remembering that he was here too. “Hey, Ned. Um, just been listening to some music while we waited for the pizza.” You gave Peter a small smile. “I got extra pepperoni for you.”
“Ah, awesome! Thanks, Y/N/N, you’re the best.” Peter exclaimed and you beamed from being praised.
The boys crowded their way into the living room and plopped down onto the couch in their usual places. Trying to act as casual as possible, you sank into the place right next to Peter and tucked your feet under you. It was impossible to ignore that his hand was just inches from your knee. One little bump and his long fingers could be on your skin.
“What movie do you guys want to start with?” MJ asked from the floor, her body turned just enough to acknowledge the group.
Ned bounced slightly, “Let’s watch a scary movie!”
The rest of the group agreed easily but you groaned loudly. “Not another scary movie, you guys. I’ll be up all night.”
Peter leaned over, his shoulder bumping into yours. You were hyper-sensitive to the feeling of his shoulder against yours. “I promise I won’t let anything get you. You can hold my hand if you get scared.”
Goosebumps speckled your skin in an instant. He was watching you with that comforting gaze that always made you feel protected. You slowly nodded and his eyes glistened with delight. You bit your lip nervously, dying to press your mouth to his, instead you fell backwards against the fluffy pillow beside you.
Another knock at the door interrupted the chatter and MJ jumped up to answer it.
“Someone get the drinks, I’ll get the pizza.” She called as she ran out of the room. You moved to get up at the same time as Peter.
“I’ll help you get everything.” He offered when you gave him a weird look. A small flutter went through your body as he motioned for you to lead the way.
Your head was buried in the fridge when you recognized the faint tune of your cell alarm. You glanced around to see it lying on the kitchen counter.
“Can you get that, Pete? It’s probably just my alarm.” And you returned to pulling out different sodas from the rack.
“Sure, no problem...” His voice trailed off.
Silence hung over the room like a blanket and you looked up to find him staring at your phone screen. “Um, are you okay? Pete?”
“Am I your lockscreen?”
You swallowed thickly. It had completely slipped your mind that you had made him your lock screen a few weeks ago. You had been on your way to take pictures for the Robotics Competition when you had seen him in the hallway talking to a classmate. He just looked so happy and free that you couldn’t stop yourself from capturing the moment.
Now, he was standing in front of you, barely more than a step away, waiting for an answer. You wondered if he could hear the blood rushing in your ears or the thudding of your heart inside your chest.
“Um. Well, yes. I just love the picture and I like to have things I like for my wallpaper...” Your feet had suddenly become more interesting to you in the last 15 seconds.
“And you like me?” His voice was soft.
All you could do was nod like a child who was scared to be scolded.
You were surprised by a hand tilting your chin up, and you lifted your eyes to meet his. Shivers were running down your spine as Peter smiled sweetly down at you. He leaned forward, his nose brushing against yours, and your breath was caught in your throat. Was this really happening?
He hesitated in that spot, “I like you too.” Lips rubbing against each other as he said the words.
You lost all sensibility in that moment. You wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him the rest of the way. He made a little oof of surprise and placed his hands on your waist instantaneously.
You and Peter were pushing and pulling against each other like fuel to a fire. His hands were pressed to the low spot of your back and you were playing with the small curls at the base of his neck. His lips felt calming and electric as they moved against yours.
Peter had turned and pinned you against the counter, deepening the kiss, and the thumping of his heart was echoing in your chest. His body was flush against yours and the heat was rushing to your head. The primal instinct within you was dying to keep going, unrelenting to let Peter out of your grasp. But the practical side of you was telling you that this was only your first kiss. The first of many, you hoped.
The need for air overtook the need for passion and you broke away. Peter was panting heavily, his breath washing over you. Without thinking, you stood on your tiptoes and pulled his lower lip in between your teeth and then let it snap back. Peter groaned and rested his forehead against yours.
“You are so beautiful. God, I could kiss you all night.” The words were husky with adoration.
You giggled like a schoolgirl and rubbed your nose against his. “I think MJ and Ned might think something was up.”
Peter’s eyes flicked to the doorway and laughed an airy laugh. “I think they may already know.”
You turned your head quickly to see MJ and Ned standing in the doorway, knowing smirks on their face. A blush tipped your cheeks and you tucked in closer to Peter’s body, your cheek placed against his neck.
“You owe me five bucks, Ned.” MJ held her hand and Ned grumbled as he dug around in his pockets.
“Ah man, you two couldn’t have waited two more weeks. I needed that.” Ned hung his head and headed back into the living room. MJ shot you an annoyingly smug grin and disappeared to follow Ned.
Peter squeezed his arms around you and you melted into his touch. “Ya know, I really like that picture you took of me. You’re so freakin talented.”
You smiled against his neck. “Thanks, Pete. But it’s just a hobby, nothing special.”
“Trust me when I say, everything about you is special. And I hope I’m allowed to show you every day just how special you are to me.” He looked down at you, his chocolate brown were tinted with want. You could tell that he was nervous to be this open with someone.
You bent forward and kissed his lips sweetly. “Only if I get to do the same thing for you, Peter Parker.”
Peter embraced you tightly and lifted you off your feet and you could feel his face pressed into your hair. Your heart was soaring with excitement. The last thing you had expected from this weekend was catching the guy you’d been pining after for so long. It was an amazing feeling.
Finally, Peter reluctantly put you down but held your hand up against his heart. “I’ll be your lockscreen for as long as you’ll have me.”
“COME ON, YOU LOVEBIRDS.” You both burst out laughing as MJ screamed from the living room, snapping you out of your trance. You locked your hand with Peter and started gathering the sodas for your friends.
“You promised I could hold your hand if I got scared, right?” You quipped and Peter’s grin told you all you needed to know.
GOODBYE EDMONTON!
Did everyone have a fun weekend? I’m so glad the weather was good this time!
Hello to new followers: you may like to peek at my instagram, @imaginationillustration. (at the moment it has more food and cats on it than art, FYI) I also have a pillowfort with the same name but FYI I have not been very active there yet. You might also want to check out my patreon, where my followers get to peek at sketches, WIPs and upcoming projects, and lastly check out my redbubble as well, because I have goodies available there that I do not bring with me to cons!
So this was my last Edmonton show, at least for now, and that makes me sad, because I always had a good time in Edmonton. But I had a really awesome weekend (and of course I’ll still be doing Calgary).
First of all...... what’s with the taco in a bag thing everywhere??? I even drove past a Taco Time advertising a taco in a bag. This is not a thing that has caught on in Calgary yet!
I had a big budget for shopping this year and enjoyed being able to go all out. My favourite booth was @smoking.barrel.customs which was selling beautiful animal skulls. I had a *reasonable* budget, not an *unlimited* budget, so I only bought two small items that I thought would be fun to draw, and I am planning on saving up to buy a larger carnivore skull next year in Calgary.... maybe a coyote?
I’m excited to get some drawing done with those. Drawing from an object you can set up, turn all around, get right up close an inspect it, is just SO different from trying to draw from reference photos pulled from google.
I got to meet up with my regular expo buddies, and also got to say to an old classmate from college who I haven’t seen in literally ten years, got to get out of Calgary for the weekend, chat about nerdy stuff...
On Sunday I got Cary Elwes’ autograph for my oldest kiddo, and as we were chatting, when I mentioned that she is 18, he said oh, getting ready for college, leaving the nest, that’s a big change! I guess I looked pathetic because he offered to give me a hug! Afterwards he grabbed my hands and said if she is half as cute as me, she will do fine. That was, first of all, kind of a random little hilight to my weekend... I would never presume to ask any of the celebrities at conventions if I could have a hug. In addition I thought that was just a nice, kind thing. I’ve had a really rough year full of nothing but bad luck and that was just... it was a lovely little kind human gesture that really made me smile (and most likely blush as well) and had me laughing for an hour after I went back to my booth. Unexpected. Thank you for that, Mr. Elwes!
(a little girl in front of me also gave him a crayon drawing she had made which was fucking adorable)
Let’s see, what else. So much Good Omens cosplay!!! I wish I had my shit together enough to have made some beautiful fanart, because I am enjoying that show so much. I’m not sure if the same food trucks come back every year, but if it’s there again, I recommend you try food from Curry in a Hurry. I had mango chicken and chicken pakora and it was so tasty, the seasoning of the curry was amazing.
As always, I’m so happy to be able to present my original artwork and have people who like it... this year I was absolutely delighted because for the very first time, I sold prints of this piece here:
Tumblr media
I did this guy for Inktober last year, and I put a lot of effort into it. It’s inspired by a poem, and I included a line of it done in nice calligraphy in the horn. I looked at photo references for the drawing and the colouring. I spend a long time on it, and I’m so happy with it, the little details like the feathers I added in... and no one ever liked it but me, lmao. The ink drawing didn’t get reblogged, the coloured version didn’t get reblogged, it never sold on my redbubble, and it never sold when I brought it to Calgary.
This time, I sold a few prints of it, and that makes me *oh so happy*. I’ve always found you guys in Edmonton have a big appreciation for original art.
I hope everyone else had a good weekend.
Treacherous (Episode 10)
Tumblr media
Saturday Morning I woke up alone in a giant bed that smelt like strawberries and aftershave, I could stay wrapped up in the blankets but I know I have to eventually get up.  The alarm clock on the bedside table tells me it's 11;35am, I've been asleep for hours and I have no idea when Angus got up or if he is even home, the apartment is so quiet.  I throw the blankets off, get out of the bed and then make it, I'm a tidy house guest even if I did sleep in til well into the morning. I make my way to the bathroom, grabbing my hairbrush on the way, I can feel I have a bird's nest of bedhead hair without even viewing it, I brush my hair into a neat ponytail. In the bathroom I see our towels are still laying on the floor from our early hours shower, they too smell like strawberries. I gather them up and am now on the search for the laundry, I guess I didn't pay  enough attention when I was given the tour. I know that upstairs theres just Angus' bedroom, lounge room and kitchen so it must be downstairs, somewhere so I venture down there and find a small laundry hidden under the stairs, I put the towels in the washing machine, scoop in some powder and start the washing. Angus suddenly appears in the doorway of the laundry.
"I have a maid who I pay to do that" He tells me
"Oh, I didn't know that, I just know at home Don would go off if he saw we left dirty towels on the floor" I explain
"I'm betting you made my bed too didn't you?" He asks, smiling at me
"Ah yeah, I did, should I have left it unmade?" I'm so confused
"I'm going to pay Joanna $165 today and she's not going to do anything" He explains, laughing
"I'm sorry" I apologise
"Baby it's all good, you just don't have to be a domestic goddess here, relax" He assures me.
No more cleaning Zoey, no matter how frustrated I get with how untidy things are left.
"Do you want to have brunch out somewhere?" He asks
"That would be awesome considering I know you're not going to cook for me" I reply, laughing
"Fuck you're cheeky" He says, spanking me on my behind and kiss him on the cheek and he explains it won't be just us at brunch, "Caleb will be going us and when he found out I was bringing you he insisted on bringing Molly, his non girlfriend who desperately wants to be his girlfriend" He warns me
"That's ok, where are we going to?" I ask
"Funnily enough we are going to the bar on top of Skye Fitness, we've got an awesome chef and he will make you whatever you want" He informs me
"Do you and Caleb do brunch dates often?" I ask, curiously
"Zoey, I've been single for two years and Caleb is not likely to commit to any woman any time soon but we do like brunch and it's not exclusively a couples meal, two dudes can enjoy a manly brunch together" He says defensively  and I can't help but laugh at him. He picks me up and sits me on top of the washing machine which has just entered into its spin cycle, I wrap my legs around his waist and kiss him passionately as the vibration from the machine sends delicious  jolts through my whole body, I have no idea what is happening but it's exciting and feels amazing, like it's building inside me. Angus scoops me up with one hand and uses the other to remove my pyjama bottom, he pushes my now soaked underwear to one side and I feel his fingers slip inside me, massaging my sweet spot, I can't hold onto this mounting pressure any longer and I feel my whole body quiver, my breathing slowing down and returning to normal, I open my eyes and focus on Angus who is watching me intently. The washing machine had long finished it's cycle and I didn't even notice. I'm just sitting there shocked by what just happened, eventually I find my voice.
"What was that?" I ask Angus
"It was an orgasm, have you never had one?" He sounds surprised and I shake my head, "Did you like it?"  he asks and I hear the panic in his voice, he thinks he went too far.
"It felt amazing, I've never felt anything like it" I tell him and his face relaxes, "Do you want me to...umm...return the favour?" I enquire, not even sure if I'm ready to touch his penis but after that I'm willing to learn.
"No baby, I got myself there" he reassures me
"I love you Angus" The words roll out of my mouth without me even realising it but it makes him smile so wide.
"I love you too Zoey" he replies and kisses my lips softly.
We were running a little bit late for brunch but Angus assured me that Caleb is always late anyway so I shouldn't worry but when we arrive at the Skye Fitness bar the only other people there are pale skinned man with dark hair and a woman who looked only a few years older than me, skinny and pretty with blonde ringlets of hair sitting at shoulder length. The man stands up as we approach the table, he's so tall and so pale.
"I've been waiting here for 10 minutes, Molly ran out of small talk after 5 minutes" The man announces to us.
"Sorry Caleb, we lost track of time, had to put a load of washing on" Angus explains to him and the two men shake hands
"And who is this beautiful creature who you're obviously paying to hang out with you?" Caleb asks
"This is my girlfriend, Zoey. Zo, this is Caleb, he talks shit about me, don't believe him and this is his girlfriend, Molly" Angus introduces us, Caleb shoots him a look at the referral of Molly being his girlfriend but Molly just smiles like she's finally won a prize
"Hey Zoey, nice to meet you, finally another girl I can talk to, these two just talk about sports and whose car goes fast" Molly greets me warmly
"Caleb has accepted that my Aston Martin could beat his toy car any day, we raced and I won" Angus tells me
"Was I meant to be impressed by your car Angus?" I ask innocently
"Oh burn, she didn't even notice the car buddy, you clearly haven't shown her the backseat yet" Caleb jokes and I blush intensely
"Let's order" Angus attempts to save me while shooting Caleb a look.
Our meals arrive, I ordered protein pancakes which are super soft and fluffy, both Caleb and Molly have bacon and eggs and Angus also has the pancakes but with a small bowl of strawberries on the side.
"What is it with you and strawberries" I have to ask
"I love them, they're sweet and juicy and they smell amazing" He tells me, placing one in my mouth and it is the most amazing strawberry I've ever tasted. "see?" he asks
"Mmm that actually tasted how that body wash smells" I announce, amazed.
"Are you at University Zoey?" Molly asks
"Not yet, I'm in year 12, 5 months to go and then hopefully Uni" I reply
"You'll get in baby" Angus reassures me, "She's really smart, top of her school" He tells the others as he looks at me proudly
"What about yourself Molly? Are you at Uni?" I ask her
"Yeah, first year, it's so different high school, a lot more freedom but a much bigger cause load and the campus is massive" She tells me
"What are you studying?" I ask
"Psychology, human behaviours excite me, why people do what they do" She enthuses, "What about you Zoey, what do you want to study?"
"My parents want me to do medicine but I want to study veterinary" I explain
"Wow, both would be pretty intense" Molly exclaims, shocked
"You're telling me and my parents have just started coming down on my sister and I with their "No distraction" rules so I'm feeling the pressure at home and at school too, if my principal tells us one more time how "This is the year that determines the rest of your lives" one more time I think I'm going to scream" I tell her and we both laugh.
"You didn't tell me that Ruth and Don set new rules. Does it affect our time together?" Angus asks me, shocked
"Sorry, I was going to tell you, it doesn't really affect us too much, I can still do gym but Friday and Saturday nights are my only times I can socialise now, Tess too, that includes parties or going to boyfriend's places, they kinda flipped out when I told them I was staying at yours on Friday but it's all good now" I explain
"You should of told me Zoey, last thing I want is being a distraction to you right now" He says in a tone that I can't tell if he's angry or hurt, stupid Zoey, why did I bring the subject up.
We finish brunch, say our goodbyes to Caleb and Molly and make our way back to his apartment.
"I'll take you home Zo" He announces after we walk in silence
"I don't have to be home yet, I've completed all my weekend homework already so I can stay longer if you want me to" I plead with him, I don't want to go home yet, I don't want to leave things like this, I want him to know I have it all under control
"Don't ever hide things from me that concern us Zoey" He raises his voice and I feel so guilty inside, I caused this and I don't know how to fix it.
We get inside the apartment, he throws his keys on the bar and storms off out into the garden. I walk upstairs and start packing my things into my bag, I don't want to stay if he's just going to be in a bad mood all afternoon. With my bag packed I make my way back down stairs, I can see he's still outside, sitting in a lounger with his back to me. I open my school folder, pull out a piece of paper, find a pen on the bar and write him a note
'I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I didn't want to cause you to worry. Thank you for an amazing night, see you Monday.
Love Zoey'
I pin it to his noticeboard, take the elevator to the lobby and walk to the train station with tears streaming down my face. I ruined everything, I should of just been honest with him. I put my phone into aeroplane mode so I can listen to music without being distracted and find an empty seat next to a window, perfect, I can watch the scenery and no one will know I'm secretly having a break down. The train pulls into the station at Brindlton Bay, the doors open and I step onto the platform and there he is, looking casually cool, leaning against the wall, he steps forward when he sees me, walks towards me and I breakdown in his arms.
"Im so sorry" I sob, drenching his t-shirt in my salty tears, "I ruined everything". He holds on to me tightly and I'm sure the other passengers are enjoying the break down of Zoey Green's relationship.
"Lets go to the lighthouse, we can talk there" He says
"If you're going to end things with me just do it here" I tell him
"Baby I'm not ending anything, I just want to talk" He promises and I walk with him to his car, get in and he begins driving us up to where the light house is.
"I'm impressed by your car" I joke and he cracks up laughing at me.
We all up in the carpark for the light house, he turns the car off and sits there looking at me for what feels like forever then he speaks.
"You left and I had no idea where you were and I got worried that you had left for good" He says and I can see the sadness in his eyes
"I wrote you a note, I put it on your noticeboard" I explain
"I have a noticeboard?" He asks, laughing
"Yeah, it's just out the front of your front door, you've never noticed it?" I laugh
"I've never noticed a noticeboard at my front door" He tells me and we both laugh. Silence once again falls between us but this time it's me who breaks it.
"I didn't want to stay if you were going to be angry at me, I don't like confrontation" I explain
"I'm not angry at you Zoey, I know it came off like that but I'm not and I'm sorry you felt that you had to run away from me. I'm just worried about being a distraction to you, like you're parents and school have said, this is one of the most important years of your life and I don't want to be the reason that you don't get the marks you need to get into uni" He frets
"Angus I'm so far ahead of everyone else in my classes, I've been putting in all the effort for years and I know how important this year is, even without everyone reminding me but I also want to be a normal, teenage girl, one that gets to go on dates with her boyfriend" I tell him
"I want you to be honest with me though, if it does get too much and you have to step back from us I will understand, it will kill me but you are my priority. If you feel you need to concentrate on school over us please tell me. No more hiding anything either, promise" He's pleading with me and it would kill me too to walk away but I know he's doing it for me.
"I promise, I won't hide anything, I love you Angus" I vow to him
"I love you too baby, when do you have to be home?"
"No until noon tomorrow, why?"
"Stay with me again?" he asks
"Yes but I think we need to do some more laundry" I inform him, smiling
"We are going to make a special stop on the way home, buy some things for Zoey" He announces and it peaks my curiosity
"What things are we buying for Zoey?" I ask, feeling a little silly talking to him in third person
"Something better than the washing machine and you can leave it at my house or take it home with you but I always want you to bring it to my house, so I can use it on you" He's getting excited as he starts the car and we pull out of the parking lot.
"On me? Is it going to hurt?" I ask, somewhat terrified
"Zoey why would I want to do anything to you that hurts you" He ask, slightly insulted
"I thought maybe that's what you're in to. Tess said some boys like that kind of control over a girl" I explained, embarrassed
"Do me a favour Zoey, stop taking advice about men from your sister who has only been with Declan and now I'm thinking Declan is one of those boys" He laughs to himself
"Well what is it that we are getting then?" I ask, if it's not designed to hurt me then I'm fully on board
"Just a small vibrator baby and I'll be very gentle with it, I promise"
"Is it going to hurt when I do have sex?" I ask him, back to being fearful
"It most likely will, the first few times but I'll be there with you and if it gets too much we can stop or take a break, whatever you need" He says and I feel at ease
"Can we try tonight" I ask, voice trembling, he reaches out and grabs my hand.
"There's no rush baby, I'm not going anywhere, I know our fight scared you, it scared me too whenI saw you had gone but I don't want you to feel you have to do anything out of fear that you're going to lose me coz I'm not going anywhere" He says to me in a reassuring tone.
"I know that, I want to do this because I love you and I trust that you will make me feel safe and I want to share something special with you, just you" I know I want this, I just need him to know it too.
"If you're sure about this and as long as you know that we can stop at anytime. Then we will need to make a second stop then, to the mini mart" He tells me
"Why?" I ask
"Because I don't think Don and Ruth want their 18 year old daughter being distracted by pregnancy, pretty sure they'd murder me for that" He laughs and I look at him in fear.
"do you remember your first time?" I ask him to break the silence
"Yeah, I was guy who thought he knew everything and it was all over within about 15 seconds, poor Steph didn't know what to do but we kept practicing, every chance we got and I got better, lasted longer" He reminisces
"Did it hurt her? The first time?" I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I like to be prepared for every possibility.
"Yeah it did" He answers me with the truth.
We make our stops and head back to his apartment just as the cold night air is setting in. He lights a fire in the fire place and orders food, I offered to cook but he wouldn't allow it.
"Go grab a blanket and sit on the couch" He orders me. It's only then that I realise that my phone is still in aeroplane mode from when I was on the train, I turn off aeroplane mode and an influx of missed calls, voicemails and text come through, manly all from Tess. I call her back and she answers on the first ring.
"Zoey are you coming home tonight by any chance?" She asks and I get suspicious
"No, Im staying in the city tonight, why?" I ask her
"Mum and Don went away for the weekend so I'm going to invite Declan over tonight so we can be alone" She explains
"oh, ok, is that it?" I ask
"Did you do it?" She demands, wanting to know the status of my virginity
"Not yet...but I think I will tonight...I'll tell you about it when I get home tomorrow. I love you T"
"Love you too Z"
I hang up and relax on the lounge until our food arrives and when it does I see he ordered us Chinese and all my favourite dishes too.
"I had some help" He tells me
"From who?" I ask
"Who do you think? who knows you better than anyone?" He asks
"Tess? When did you get in contact with Tess?"
"When I couldn't reach you and I panicked and she said you'd be on the train and that if I had fucked up, her words, not mine, then I should get you Chinese food and passionfruit ice cream" He tells me.
"There's passionfruit ice cream in this apartment?" I ask shocked
"Yep, carbs don't count when I've upset you" He looks at me with sad eyes.
"I upset you too, I should have just told you about the rules, I just didn't want to worry you"I explain and he kisses me
November Forecast for Scorpio
It’s Scorpio season—and this year, it’s really your time to shine! For the first week of November, you’re rounding out an exciting year of growth and expansion that started back on October 10, 2017, when abundant Jupiter entered Scorpio for the first time since 2006. For the past 13 months, you’ve been evolving into a brand-new version of yourself, and this month, the world could see the unveiling of Scorpio 2.0.
On November 7, the only Scorpio new moon of 2018 acts like a cosmic new year for you, kicking off a six-month cycle for your goals and personal dreams. If there were ever a day to come into your own, it’s now. Hello, fresh starts! Since this is also the very last day that Jupiter will be in your sign until 2029, make a supersized birthday wish…and don’t hold back.
If you’re still figuring out what to do with all of your self-discovery, fear not! On November 8, Jupiter will march into Sagittarius until December 2, 2019, spending 13 months in your second house of work, money and security. You’ll shift into “builder” mode, where all of the exciting discoveries you made over the past year will start to take shape. Sure, plenty of them may wind up on the cutting-room floor, but one or two winners might be worth making into something tangible. They could even become profitable over the coming months—but you won’t know unless you try.
With gambler Jupiter in this stabilizing house, it’s all about taking measured risks. Put yourself out there and see: You could be tapped for a promotion or an exciting new gig that helps you build your nest egg. With vivacious Jupiter in your second house of self-worth, your confidence is on the rise, and others will be drawn to your centered and purposeful energy. In fact, this is a year that many people meet the person they marry, mainly because you’re attracted to prospects who have solid values and good character, instead of the flashy players. Jupiter was last here from November 24, 2006, until December 18, 2007, so look back to those dates for clues of what could resurface.
You’ll get more cosmic reinforcements to pick a solid bet because on November 6, unpredictable Uranus will take a four-month hiatus from your relationship house, where it’s been shaking things up (in Taurus) since mid-May. Uranus will back into Aries and your sixth house of health, wellness and organization for a final hurrah. Then on March 6, 2019, it will leave for good, not to return in this lifetime. Use this time to really get your wellbeing on track and to get stressful projects off your plate. The sixth house rules employees and service providers, and with tech-savvy Uranus here, you might get some extra help from a virtual assistant or by adding efficient new apps and gadgets to your world. The “internet of things” could become your new favorite buzzphrase.
Midmonth, the landscape shifts when Venus, the planet of love and harmony, FINALLY ends a six-week retrograde that lasted from October 5 to November 16. Complications with friendships, family members and romantic partners should start to clear up. You’ll be more relieved than most signs because you weathered Venus retrograde in Scorpio from October 5 to 31 and may have felt challenged at every turn. Not only is Venus straightening out, but on November 15, sizzling Mars will move into Pisces and your blazing-hot fifth house of lust and glamour for the rest of the year, bringing sexy back with a vengeance.
The only downside is that Mercury, the planet of communication, travel and technology, has scheduled its next retrograde to start that same day (November 16) and last through December 6. Mercury will back through Sagittarius and your money house until December 1, putting a damper on Jupiter’s enthusiasm for the first couple weeks. Then, from December 1 to 6, Mercury will slip into Scorpio, making you feel misunderstood all over again. The only silver lining is that this will last for five days instead of three-plus weeks—but during this time, you’ll want to fly under the radar and avoid anyone who pushes your buttons. Got something to launch? Wait until December 7, when the planets are behaving AND there’s a Sagittarius new moon powering up your money mojo.
On November 22, the Sun will move into Sagittarius for a month, balancing out the Mercury effect a bit—or at least turning your focus to practical, productive tasks. November 22 also happens to be Thanksgiving in the U.S., and you’ll have plenty to be grateful for a few days later. On November 26, the Sun will make its annual conjunction (meetup) with Jupiter—a day some astrologers consider the luckiest of the year since it gives you a revitalizing boost of confidence and charisma. With these luminaries linking up in your financial sector, you could have an awesome payout, perhaps from a Black Friday sale or an exciting work offer. Or you might have a major epiphany about a change you want to make professionally—and a surge of can-do energy to go along with it.
The next day, November 23, brings the year’s only Gemini full moon in your eighth house of intimacy, merging and joint ventures. This could mark a turning point in a key business or personal relationship—a time you decide to either go all the way in…or all the way out. The eighth house is the home turf of Scorpio, so you’ll be feeling very much yourself under these extreme skies. It could also be one of the sultriest days of the year since the emotional moon powers up your erotic eighth house, boosting a mind-body-soul connection.
The weekend advances further in this direction because on November 24, dreamy Neptune wakes up from a five-month retrograde in Pisces and your fifth house of romance. The holidays are starting to look promising on the love front! Before you become “all work and no play” with Jupiter fueling your ambition, save room for some hedonistic side splurges, too.
Love & Romance
So many feelings! Love is a super-emotional affair this month—yes, again. Romantic Venus, the planet of relationships and harmony, is retrograde from October 5 to November 16, and it’s dredging up some buried emotions. From October 5 to 31, Venus backtracked through Scorpio, which put you in the hot seat. An ex may have resurfaced, or you could have felt a bit confused about the direction. At times you may have felt like you couldn’t mask your insecurities, no matter what you did.
Venus will spend this whole month in Libra and your introspective twelfth house of forgiveness, healing and hidden agendas, and it will be retrograde until November 16. You may need to clear some old resentments or repair the trust in a bond. Some Scorpios will just need time alone—solitude and silence are golden.
With stressful Mars in Aquarius and your domestic fourth house until November 15, you might not get that serenity at Chateau Scorpio. Be vigilant about carving out a space for yourself under your roof…for everyone’s sake! Conversations about babies, exchanging keys or upgrading your shared living situations could be sources of both excitement AND stress for coupled Scorpios. Keep stress at bay so your moods don’t spiral out of control.
On November 9, Venus and Mars will unite in a cooperative trine (120-degree angle), an ideal day to talk about your feelings, especially ones you’ve been keeping under wraps. Summon the courage to be vulnerable and wear your heart on your sleeve. It’s not always easy to be straightforward about your needs (or to say “I’m sorry”), but passive-aggressive or indirect tactics will backfire. Let someone know how you feel and what you need, avoiding any hint of shame or blame.
The second half of the month takes a sexy turn. On November 15, Mars will blaze into Pisces and ignite your fifth house of lust, flirtation and passion for the rest of the year. The holiday season is about to get hot! With Venus correcting course the next day, the stars are practically following you around with a sprig of mistletoe—and a long list of admirers eager to get under that kissing branch with you. For coupled Scorpios, the rest of the year is perfect for dressing up and hitting some glamorous outings. Prioritize novel experiences and fun to get the adrenaline and mojo flowing.
Book some sultry private time on November 23, when the Gemini full moon heats up your erotic eighth house. A relationship could plunge into new levels of permanent bonding—or you could decide to cut things off for good.
Key Dates
November 19: Mars-Jupiter Square Your romantic vision may be 20-20, but a partner or colleague might be more myopic—or unable to see the brilliance of your ideas today. Don’t get hung up on it. It could prove to be just a one-day obstacle!
Money & Career
Bring on the bounty! Your luckiest financial year in more than a decade begins November 8, when generous Jupiter kicks off its 13-month foray into Sagittarius and your prosperous second house. After an adventurous year of trying new things, you’re now ready (or soon will be) to “pick a lane” and concentrate your efforts on a specific goal. That diligence and persistence could pay off between now and December 2, 2019, so narrow your focus, Scorpio.
While you’re at it, be sure to upgrade your systems. From November 6, 2018, until March 6, 2019, revolutionizer Uranus will make one final trek through Aries and your sixth house of efficiency and employees. From hiring remote service providers to upgrading Team Scorpio with savvy and skilled new people to “going digital” with a clunkily analog project, your world is due for a postmodern update. Do it now because Uranus won’t return to Aries again in your lifetime, meaning you have one final opportunity to apply everything you learned while Uranus was here from March 2011 to May 2018. After that, the planetary shock jock will settle into an eight-year trek through Taurus and your seventh house of partnerships. That’s all the more reason to get things running like a well-oiled machine since you could be offered an exciting deal or an opportunity to join forces.
Things are definitely looking up in the work department, but you’ll have one last hitch to contend with from November 16 to December 6, when Mercury turns retrograde, mucking up technology, travel and communication for three weeks. It won’t be enough to STOP you in your tracks—especially with the Sun soaring into Sag on November 22—but consider it a gentle-ish tap on the brakes before you go barreling into a new business venture.
Besides, you could be really glad you waited once the November 23 Gemini full moon illuminates your eighth house of joint ventures and big money. A bonus, commission, sale or windfall could be headed your way. If you’re thinking of buying or selling property, this full moon can push the deal through the finish line. Just scrutinize every single word before you ink any deals. With Mercury retrograde, you’re prone to missing important fine print, and you just can’t be too careful!
Key Dates
November 26: Sun-Jupiter Meetup This could be one of your luckiest days of the year in terms of work or money. When these bold and expansive planets align—something that only happens once a year—you could make a savvy career move or get in on the ground floor of a business that’s about to blow up.
Love Days: 20, 24 Money Days: 31, 13 Luck Days: 29, 11 Off Days: 23, 27, 8
This Isn’t 1985. (Frank Iero x Reader)
“Looks like Frank’s online,” you called out to your friend as you scrolled through your Twitter feed.
“Yeah?” her response sounded from the kitchen, where she was fixing a snack, “What’s he saying?”
“Uh… something about how his back hurts,” you answered, tapping on the reply button, “I’m gonna reply to it.”
Tumblr media
(Y/B/F)’s laugh echoed through the house as she swaggered into the living room holding a fruit platter. “Just be careful there, babe. That’s dangerous territory.”
Scoffing, you reached out to grab a pineapple cube and pop it into your mouth. “Don’t worry,” you muffled, “I’ll make sure not to set myself up for any roasting. All I’m gonna do is offer some advice.”
(Y/B/F) grimaced and shot you a nervous look, picking up an apple slice and nibbling on it. You shrugged lightly and began penning your response.
“There,” you announced with a smile, tapping your phone screen a few times and sending your tweet off into the internet, “It’s sent.”
You tucked the device away and turned to your friend, the two of you engaging in a conversation about your plans for the upcoming weekend as you munched on fruit.
Three minutes later, your cell dinged to indicate that you had a new notification. Practically bursting with excitement, you picked up your phone and opened up Twitter.
“Ah, he replied!” you squealed, prompting (Y/B/F) to perk up.
“What’d he say?”
You read the tweet and your face fell.
Noting the way your excitement deflated, (Y/B/F) cringed. “Uh oh.”
“I don’t get it,” you pouted slightly, “I wasn’t even mean. I was only trying to help.”
“Lemme see what you said,” (Y/B/F) requested, holding out her hand. You dropped the phone into her open palm.
Her eyes darted over your tweet and she frowned. “Yeah, you were totally chilled.”
Tumblr media
Then, she read his response. “Damn, Frank. What crawled up your ass and made a nest?” She handed your cell back with a shake of her head. “You’re right. He was totally unnecessary.”
Tumblr media
Despondency flooded over you as you slumped back into the couch. (Y/B/F) stayed silent for a minute before speaking again.
“Sooo… do you still wanna go and meet him outside the bar gig tomorrow?”
You snapped your head towards her so quickly your neck almost snapped. “What kind of question is that? Of course I do.”
~
The next night, you and (Y/B/F) were part of a small group of people standing on the sidewalk a few feet away from the entrance to the bar Frank was in, waiting patiently for him to come out.
Not a lot of people were aware of the fact that he would be there that night, hence the low numbers, and you were fortunate that one of (Y/B/F)’s friends passed on the memo.
Said friend was now approaching you two, moving to engulf (Y/B/F) in a hug and pinch your cheek in greeting. His gaze flickered to your t-shirt for a moment and he let out a short laugh.
“Nice one,” he waved a hand over your Goonies shirt, making you grin.
“I’m guessing you saw the tweet, then?” you laughed and shook your head and he nodded, giggling.
“Everyone saw it.”
His claim was backed up by the hollering from the rest of the group, and you groaned as you hid your face in your hands. Thankfully, Frank walked out a second later and all of the attention shifted from you over to him.
There were only about ten of you, and so you and (Y/B/F) waited until everyone else had taken their pictures and gotten their autographs and said their piece before stepping up.
Frank gave a sweet smile when he looked at you. “Hi.”
“Hi,” you smiled back; you started to get lost in his beautiful eyes but stopped yourself by shaking your head lightly, “Thank you so much for stopping to do this; it means a shit ton.”
He brushed you off with a wave of his hand and a soft ‘pfft’. “No worries. You took the time to come down here and wait outside. It’s the least I can do to sign a couple things and take a picture,” he flashed his gorgeous smile again, making your cheeks heat up.
You handed over the CD you were holding for him to sign. “We haven’t been waiting that long, really. I only got off work about a half hour ago.”
“Oh, what do you do?” he asked with a furrow of his brow as he scribbled his signature, genuinely interested.
“I’m a reporter for Metro News One.”
“Oh,” he nodded in response.
“Well, kind of a reporter,” you elaborated, making a vague hand gesture. “I do those dumb little fluff pieces at the end of the news. You know, like, um, monkey that can play the ukulele. I’m hoping to get some bigger stories soon.”
“Bigger like, uh, gorilla with an up-right bass?” he chuckled nervously and you laughed a little.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled with a small smile, looking down shyly before locking gazes with you again and scrunching up his face a little, “You’re really pretty.”
You were the most caught off guard that you’d ever been, widening your eyes and opening your mouth in shock before laughing timidly and tucking your hair behind your ear. “Th-thanks.”
“You’re welcome,” he said softly, smiling again before pointing a finger at your shirt as he handed your CD back, “Cool shirt, by the way.”
You scoffed in disbelief. “Really?” you cocked an eyebrow and smirked, looking next to you at (Y/B/F), who was giggling her ass off. “You’re kidding, right?”
He frowned back at you, confused, which made you scoff again. “You literally roasted me for having The Goonies as my Twitter icon, yesterday.”
Frank stayed looking confused for a moment until the memory of what he’d written to you dawned on him, after which regret immediately graced his features.
“That was you? Oh, man. I’m so sorry,” he rambled, eyes broadening, “I was just… I don’t know, being extra salty yesterday.”
“You don’t say,” you mused, biting back another laugh.
He cast his gaze down in shame and scratched the back of his neck. “I admit it was unnecessary; you were only trying to help. Can I, uh, make it up to you? …maybe?”
“How?” you quizzed, interested to hear what he had in mind.
He shrugged and chuckled nervously. “You could come with me now for a cup of coffee? I found this really sick place over on Sixth Street. They make these really good bear claws, too. It’s amazing.”
Oh, wow. That was definitely not what you thought he had in mind.
“You mean like a…” you whispered.
“Date?” he offered, arching his brows before grinning, “Yeah. Assuming that’s cool with you.”
“It’s definitely cool with me,” you chimed, absentmindedly chewing on your bottom lip.
“Awesome,” he beamed before extending a hand to gesture down the road, “Shall we?”
“We shall,” you giggled, shrugging gleefully and strutting away in the direction he pointed out.
Frank turned to look at (Y/B/F), winking as he whispered. “Don’t wait up for her.”
The Exam
Best Music Moment of 2018:
Nasty: Hearing Red Eyes live. I've already said it on TBH, but seeing your favorite band in their relative prime is such a cool thing.
BC: Since partying all night with my favorite band fell within the short window between Bestuv '17 ending and Bestuv '18 beginning, I'd have to say:
Tumblr media
1. Kacey Musgrave's performance of "Slow Burn" on SNL
youtube
2. Radiohead perfectly executing "There There" which transported me back to Lollapalooza in '08 3. Despite the annoyance of sitting in lots of Indy500 traffic due to a new parking situation, I quite enjoyed working through half of the Stones' catalogue with Bronco riding shotgun and Codemin listening in from the flatbed of Dillon's pickup
Codem: Spending what was New Year's Eve for the central timezone in the USA at a Fijian medical bath facility listening to music, playing cards, downing tequeel and getting ringworm with my blushing bride. -hearing peter hook play the bass line from shadowplay live and in person. -Arden, JD and JJ encouraging me to go talk to Kyle from Swearin'. -Silver Jews and Westing (By Musket and Sextant) came to Spotify. -Watching "Random Rules" video for the first time
youtube
Larse: Sitting behind this massive (I mean orca fat) guy at the CHVRCHES show, feeling really bad for him before the show started because he was all alone and kept looking around and worrying about letting people in his row and things. As soon as CHVRCHES came on though, this guy was exactly where he was supposed to be that night. Sang the words and danced to every song and just made my day with how happy he was to be there. Jotted down every song of the setlist into his smartphone and just had an all around great time. And some of you motherfuckers won't even go to a movie by yourself!
JD: May: A moody Chinatown stroll with the new Grouper album in the rain. July: Soaking up some good tunes at the housewarming party to ring in our new pad. July: Some hilariously rambunctious youths having at it when “House of Jealous Lovers” came on during a full play of Compilation 1 at the DFA summer party. One of them (who must have been ~8 in the bygone days of 02) screamed out “this is the song that started it all!” to a crowd of stationary gawkers and I felt a brief moment of hope for the youngs. August: Shaking a leg at Pete’s wedding (also featuring a delightful hojl spin). September: A rowdy spin of “Sentient Oona” on the Levee juke with an impromptu digital jukebox dance party at the Turkey’s Nest with jj’s cousin and his lovely girlfriend. October: The best music cue I’ve ever seen at the end of Beau Travail.
Bronco: Taking John to his first concert, and that first concert was Mastodon. That was pretty awesome to be able to share that experience with him. He was super into it, and so were the metalheads at the show. "Dad of the Year" was definitely shouted more than a few times, and I thought to myself, "fuckin-A right."
Chap: My kids saying "Papa" when "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals comes on.
Confession of 2018:
JD: I have a real TBH confession that I held until now. I was thoroughly enjoying the Flasher album on a recent evening after a few too many drinks when a burning urge to see them washed over me. They had a show coming up at a bar just a few blocks from my apartment, so I enthusiastically snapped up tickets for me and jj. Thinking this might be a good opportunity for a TBH outing, I emailed Chap trying to peer pressure him into attending the Flasher show and gauging his interest in a Parquet Courts concert that would be happening the following evening. No response.
We later received an invitation to a holiday cocktail party at a friend’s apartment on the same night as the Flasher show, and I hatched a cockamamie scheme to go from our home in Greenpoint to the party in Soho, leave after an hour to catch the concert back in Greenpoint, head back to the party in Soho, and finally retire back to Greenpoint. JJ wisely passed on such a scheme and I left the party to trek off to the concert solo with an extra ticket in tow.
Awash in good cheer and excitement while Flasher set up, I thought what the hell, might as well take a flier on reminding Chap of the show. Maybe the twins are asleep, he’s just sitting around, can jump into a cab, claim the extra ticket, watch the show, and cruise on back. Mid-text I paused, wondering just why he never responded to the initial email weeks ago. A quick gmail search, and there sat my drunkenly composed beseechment to join, rotting in the drafts folder unsent.
A couple of the dudes from Parquet Courts were bouncing around the bar, and I decided it would make more sense to hit up Chap about attending their show the next day than explain the whole snafu and extend a ludicrous invitation that required dropping everything and leaving immediately for a show he didn’t even know was happening. I ate the extra ticket, had a blast watching Flasher, zipped back to the party, drank myself into oblivion, and was way too hung over to even consider the Parquet Courts show the next day. NICK SORRY NICK! (editor’s note: too long)
Larson: I saw Timberlake at Fiserv Forum
BC: My neighbor invited me to see Imagine Dragons. I lied and said I had to travel for work. "On a Saturdee?" he inquired. "Yeah. Totally sucks," I awkwardly replied. I hid inside my house all weekend.
Bronco: I'd rather see shows by myself than with my buddy. He likes going to shows, and I keep inviting him, and we have a fine time, but he doesn't live in town anymore, so I gotta worry about him drinking too much and driving an hour home. And his wife is a psychopath and that complicates shit. Too much. And it's just so much more freeing being able to not give a fuck about anyone else during that time, to just soak it all in, it feels good and right.
Codem: -despite all of the bad things that kanye said, i still liked listening to his catalogue throughout the year. i even liked his EP that came out in 2018.   -i really liked the beach house album!   -i liked the snail mail album, skipped two opportunities to see her and then by --the end of the year, i thought the album was sort of boring.   -Arden and i went to see pictureplane open for alice glass and thought that the show sucked and pictureplane played such stupid songs. three months later, he put out my favorite album of the year and i can't stop thinking that i hated all of the same songs the first time i heard them. -i read an article on a bright fall saturday morning that exhaustively detailed the Cardi B and Nicki Minaj feud and i watched all of the instagram story clips that showed Cardi B scrolling through her phone with those outlandish nails of hers. it took me two cups of coffee to get through it all, but get through it i did. [i couldn't think of nicki minaj's name just now so i stared at the ceiling and kept running through names in my mind's eye: missy, kim, cardi, kelis, kim??, eve, trina. i couldn't remember. so i finally googled "kanye monster" and found her name. easy.]
Nasty: I'm done with new music. It’s over. I didn't listen to a single new album - I don't even know if I could name a new album. Realistically, I did like Daytona.
Biggest Disappointment of 2018:
Tumblr media
Nasty: MAGA Kanye
Larse: Timberlake at Fiserv Forum
Bronco: Black Tusk, Alice in Chains
BC: Getting into The Orwells literally two days before #MeToo chewed 'em up and spit 'em out
Chap: Car Seat Headrest. Can't believe he's gay! jk the album was the disappointment.
Code: -somebody hacked my spotify account and wiped all of my music and replaced it with raggaeton and halsey. i was able to get my music back, but i lost all of my meticulously cared for folder structure. -i wanted the simple minds album to be cool; it was not.   -i wanted the swearin' album to be really great; it was okay. -pictureplane and ovlov did not tour their albums.   -i had to eat two tickets to my bloody valentine after buying four. the original show sold out and i thought i was going to be able to sell my extras for a profit -- they ended up announcing a second show and there was no secondary market for the original show.   -no CCFX followup ):
JD: Got to Hammerstein Ballroom for MBV and there was a line longer than an entire avenue. They were already on by the time we made it into the heinously oversold venue and we were stuck by the bar in the lobby surrounded by people constantly shouting in an effort to compete with the apocalyptic noise.
C: Terrible sound at Tame Impala show
Most Overrated of 2018:
Code: -probably that kacey musgraves album; i got absolutely nothing out of it. also, i liked the robyn album, but i wanted to love it after many years between releases. i think i'm just being greedy.   -i'm going to get killed for this, but the throwing the baby out with the bathwater approach to artists' criminal behavior or inflammatory tweets is pretty overrated right now.
Bronco: Ghost - I like their schtick, with rotating members and the whole inverted church thing. It's campy but they're sticking to it, and that's fine, but their music isn't metal. It's poppy glam shit about the devil, and that's also fine, but I don't get why it's on anyone's list. Production value maybe? But the music itself isn't anything to write home about. I just don't get it.
JD: n/a. The thick layer of nonsensical, Pynchonian obfuscation the platform economy dollops over everything has made it impossible to understand how anything is rated. Almost feel bad for the click driven publications that have to just throw out a guess.
C: Mitski
Chap: Snail Mail
BC: Kanye. His new music is no longer good enough to put up with his bufoonery.
Laser: Timberlake at Fiserv Forum
Make It Stop 2018:
Nasty: DJT, anytime now.
Bronco: Party politics. No more labels allowed. You can have a list of stuff you support and a list of stuff you are against, but that's fucking it. No more this side vs that side for reasons as caddy as an R vs. a D. Also religion having any influence whatsoever in the way our country is run. Believe whatever you want to believe, but don't force your bullshit on anyone else. You want to torment yourself with a lifelong christian guilt trip, that's your boat to float, but don't go poking holes in my boat just because you're a miserable fuck. Just stop. Also, Jack White.
Larse: Timberlake at Fiserv Forum
Chap: Baby Shark
BC: My shrinking attention span
JD: The cultural currency of clapbacks, shade, and tea.
Code: trap music playing from a phone's external speaker while i'm trapped on public transportation.  i'm going to go broke buying enough earbuds to distribute to these offenders.
Biggest TBH Regret of 2018:
Tumblr media
Larse: Timberlake at Fiserv Forum
C: Not seeing Low at a church on University of Chicago's Campus
JD: -Hearing about a Grouper show at a church around the corner from my pad after it sold out. -Not necessarily a regret because I didn’t know it was happening, but oh how I wish I had seen Jon Glaser and Jon Benjamin as Dave Farina and Dave Franz, Dennis and Dennis’ sons, at a Bowery Ballroom Yo La Tengo show.
BC: -I wish I would've cooked up a way to see Shame play a midnight show in Bloomington.  I just want that kid to scream "Concrete" in my face. -I probably should've seen Smashing Pumpkins when they rolled through town too.
Code: my flight got delayed and i missed the swearin' show at that place in brooklyn that "smelled like hot fish"
Bronco: Not a regret so much as I was super-bummed when High on Fire dropped out of the tour I saw in November. The venue we were at put my buddy and I right next to the stage. It would've been crazy awesome to see HOF there, but they've rescheduled at least, and I'll see them in January.
Bin: I haven't listened to any Kanye this year. I thought it would feel gratifying by year end - it doesn't. I'll probably still avoid this most recent album, but I'm going back to the well. I'll continue to talk shit about him though. Take that Ye!
Chap: No regrets
Detective Murtaugh of 2018:
Tumblr media
Larse: Getting too old to keep up with all of this new music and put a worthwhile list together at the end of the year…
Nasty:
youtube
Code: i added book of love show to my top ten concert list because Arden and i were able to take a seat on the ground in the balcony section. we had to continually move our spot on the floor to be able to peer through the railing and a mass of bodies in order to catch a glimpse of the stage.
JD: -Two of my favorite music related experiences of the year were seeing Hamilton Leithauser in the cafe of the Carlyle Hotel and the extended Niles family in The Nutcracker at the NYC Ballet. -When I googled “Detective Murtaugh” just now it was mostly pictures of Damon Wayans (Jr. no less!) playing the role on the Lethal Weapon CBS series.
Bronco: Putting up with shit instead of speaking up about it. There's room on the train but I'm squished by the door because some self-absorbed dinks won't move in? "Could you please move in?" It sounds so simple, but breaking that silence barrier was a scary thing. Now I don't give a shit. I'm on train for two stops, and I'm not going to see you again, so fuck you, move in or I'm going to move myself in and it aint gonna be pleasant for you.
Chap: A hipster female barber said I was a silver fox. AYFKM?
BC: What the hell is Fortnite?
Resolution for 2018 Update:
Larse: get my list in on time! How it went: probably horseshit! (editor’s note: it was early yet!)
NACK: While I didn’t have the occasion to catch shows this year, I anticipate doing so in '18 due to some changes afoot. How it went: Joe Dons has yet to let me know of a concert going on and I have no other friends here, so I blame him for my failure
Bin: I’m just going to keep saying “get to NY for a show with JD” until I make it happen. How it went: Didn't get to NY for a show with JD.
JD: See you gents more often with or without a show attached.  How it went: Fairly decent, but is it really ever enough?
Bronco: Get in shape. I want to stick to a schedule of running all year round. I ran a 10K back in June, then needed to recover for a bit, been recovering ever since…Fat Dad needs to keep running all year round without excuse, especially given that we go skiing between Xmas and New Year’s and I’m gonna be a floppy legged mess. During those runs, I’ll try to listen to new material each time. How it went: I ran a 5-miler in May. Haven't run since. Though I have been reasonably consistent with my prison workout (situps and pushups before bed time), so now there's a hint of muscle under my fat dad layer. Just gotta combine the two now somehow.
Code: make more playlists for my wife How it went: i said that i was going to make more mixes for my wife. i made one year-end mix for her and i'm sure she's loving it :*
BC: No more resolutions How it went: 2018 Resolution was "No More Resolutions," so pretty darn good!
Resolution for 2019:
Laser: ---
BC: Listen to one new album a week; reboot the Classic Album Review Club
JD: Greater consciousness of how I’m using my attention - an ineffectual and meaningless protest of the ways the world is burning down in pursuit of it.
Bronco: Read more 'classic' books. I didn't read many of them, even in school (especially in school? Never could read a book I was told to read). But I'm leaning in the sci-fi direction of 'classics'. I just read Dune this summer, and wrapped up Fahrenheit 451 the other day. I'm feeling an unexplained need to beef up my nerd credentials and this seems the way to accomplish it.
Chap: Learn Piano; Guilt Joe Dons into finally inviting me to a concert
Nasty: I'm sticking with it - get to NY for a show with JD.
Code: catch ovlov, pictureplane, washer, chromatics, EMA and colleen green live this year.
Most Anticipated of 2019:
Tumblr media
Bronco: Tool. Fifth year's the charm. I'm actually hopeful this time around. In fact, I half expect them to drop it on New Year's Eve or something, just so it's post Listicle season, but not quite 2019 so it can't end up on those lists either. They're such dicks like that.
BC: Still waitin' on dat Vampire Weekend yet
Chap: Vampire Weekend, Chromatics
C: Lin Manuel in Mary Poppins... I kid, My Bloody Valentine
JD: Going to put Frank Ocean out into the universe, MBV take 2, Grimes, Panda Bear, Kanye’s escape from the Black Lodge
Codem: chromatics - tommy, MBV, washer, colleen green, EMA(?), DoM
Laser: no idea what's even on the docket
Nesting (7/?): Hey Sister
Summary:  Destiel's having a baby! (No mpreg, promise) Ben wants to be happy. He really, really does.
Read it on AO3
           When Dad called him in to the library, Ben was sure he was in trouble.
           It wouldn’t be because of his not-so-great math test—Dad understood about that. But if Balthazar had told him about the books he was reading, and the nightmares he was having because of them…
           But Dad was smiling and holding hands with Cas, so it couldn’t be that bad.
           “Hey buddy.” Dad gestured for Ben to come over, and he sat next to Dad. “We’ve got some exciting news.”
           “What’s up?” Ben asked.
           Dad squeezed Cas’ hand. “We’re having a baby.”
           Ben stared at them. “Can angels—”
           “No!” Cas said quickly. “At least, not in male bodies. Neither of us our pregnant, Ben.”
           “Oh, you’re adopting?”
           “Not exactly,” Dad explained. “Your Uncle Gabriel’s been very kind and agreed to help create a child for us, one that has parts of Cas and parts of me. It’s a soul that…”
           “One that suffered in life,” Cas supplied. “They requested a second chance.”
           “Do you know who it was?” Ben asked, intrigued.
           “No, and we won’t. My Father has made sure of that.”
           “Okay. That’s…that’s cool, I guess.”
           “Cool? That’s all you got to say about a new brother or sister?” Dad demanded.
           Ben brightened. “They’ll be my brother or sister?”
           “Of course, you’re my kid, aren’t you?”
           “Yeah, but we don’t have the same mom. I guess they’re half, but—”
           “Ben,” Cas interrupted him. “Do you consider your Uncle Adam only your half-uncle? Or any of my siblings less your family?”
           “No.” Ben fidgeted. “I just meant you could call the baby yours, but it doesn’t have to be mine.”
           Dad seemed to understand what he was trying to say, and he tugged him under his arm. “You’ll be a big brother in nine months if you want,” he told Ben gently. “You’ll be this baby’s family. Okay?”
           “Okay.” Ben swallowed hard. “That is awesome. Will you teach me, Dad?”
           Dad pressed a kiss to his head. “I’ll teach you everything I know.”
           The next few months went smoothly. Dad and Cas started planning out how to take care of a baby and help run the Men of Letters at the same time. It was Uncle Sam that told them not to be idiots and take time off so that they could both be there for the baby.
           (When Ben was born, his mom had to put him in daycare after he was three months old. That was as long as she could ask her parents to watch him.)
           Everyone in the Bunker helped make the baby’s room. Cas painted some Enochian symbols over the crib. When Ben asked him what they meant, he explained that it was a lullaby. “Our child is not a Nephilim precisely,” Cas told him, “but this is an important song. I want my child to remember that they come from Heaven.”
           (When Ben was five, he was given a worksheet with ‘Draw Your Family’ on it. He drew a man in a car far away from him and mom. He didn’t even know if his father drove a car. Maybe he drove a motorcycle.)
           Ben started asking Mom if he could stay home on his weekends with Dad. “I have too much homework,” in September. “My friend’s having a birthday party,” in October.
           He never said “I feel like I’m just in the way.” Never mentioned out loud that he felt like everyone was excited about this baby except for him.
           When he did go to the Bunker (and he still wanted to go, because he loved Dad and Cas and the rest of their family), he kept reading the same books he’d started. They were terrifying, and if Aunt Charlie or Uncle Sam or Grampy had noticed what he was reading they would have probably burned the books for being inaccurate and overly horrific. But Ben was in the library by himself a lot of the time, and no one noticed.
           The breaking point came about four months in. Dad and Cas were talking about names for the baby.
           “Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?” Meg asked.
           “Does that matter?”
           “There are names that are considered more ‘boy’ names than ‘girl’ names,” Hannah said wisely.
           Cas hid a smile. “We know, Hani. And of course our child could be born transgender, which we won’t know yet.”
           Gabriel nodded. “I offered to tell them the sex for a starting point, but they said no.”
           “We want it to be a surprise.” Dad looked at a list in front of him. “Why don’t we start with the boy names? I think that might take longer.”
           “Well, your son’s already got my name,” Uncle Adam joked. Ben looked up, his head feeling heavy. “What?” he asked.
           “My middle name’s Benjamin,” Uncle Adam explained.
           “Now you know it was for me, idiot,” Uncle Benny argued. “Makes way more sense that way.”
           Dad groaned. “This joke has never been funny. Literally ever.”
           No, it really wasn’t. Because Dad hadn’t had anything to do with Ben’s name. He didn’t even know it when Ben was born.
           Ben waited for the conversation to shift back to other names and slipped quietly out of the room. He laid down on his bed, trying to calm down.
           Don’t be jealous, he told himself firmly. They’re not doing it to insult you, or forget you. Don’t be dumb…
           He still didn’t feel like going out and joining the rest, even though it was Linda’s turn to do the cooking.
           Ben rolled over on his side. Maybe he’d read more of the scary books…but reaching for them was too tiring, and before he realized it he was asleep.
           He woke with a scream to someone shaking him.
           “Ben! C’mon kiddo, wake up!”
           Ben’s eyes flew open and he looked into his dad’s worried face. The monsters had felt so real…
           “Ben? Buddy, you okay?”
           “Yeah,” Ben said hoarsely, but it wasn’t true, and Dad knew it. He pulled Ben close and for a second Ben let himself lean against him, let Dad rub his back.
           “What’s going on, buddy?” Dad whispered.
           Ben tried to pull away, and Dad let him go after a second. “It’s nothing. I just had a nightmare.”
           “Do you want to talk about it?”
           Normally Ben would want that. He could talk to Dad, and Dad could tell him what parts were possible and which parts weren’t, and promise that he would never let any of it become real anyways because he loved Ben and he was here and would take care of him.
           Ben shook his head. “I’m okay. You need to rest.”
           Dad raised his eyebrows. “It’s ten o’clock, Ben. What do I need to rest for?”
           “The baby.”
           “Ben, the baby’s not coming for months.”
           “Yeah, but you need to start getting used to sleeping when you can,” Ben explained. “You’ll need to sleep well, and focus on you and Cas so your relationship doesn’t fall apart, and I’m fine and I’m old enough to deal with things by myself—”
           “Ben, stop!” Dad took him by his shoulders. “Son, what are you talking about?”
           Ben tried to talk, but he was shaking too badly. Dad hugged him tight again, and this time Ben couldn’t stop himself from crying.
           “Oh Ben,” Dad whispered. He started to rock back and forth. “It’s okay, it’s okay…”
           “It’s not okay,” Ben tried to say, but it came out in a garbled sob.
           Dad kissed the top of his head. “Ben, sweetheart, I didn’t realize you were having so much trouble with this. I’m sorry.”
           “Don’t w-worry about me.”
           “Of course I’m going to worry about you. It’s my job; I’m your Dad.”
           “You weren’t always.”
           Dad didn’t let go, but he stopped rocking.
           “And I know Mom didn’t tell you,” Ben said quickly. “But with this baby—it feels like you want to be a real dad, and have a real family. And I’m just a reminder that you weren’t. I don’t want to make you feel bad, and I don’t want to be in the way.”
           Dad didn’t say a word at first. He just hugged Ben so tight he could hardly breathe.
           “You are my son,” he promised finally. “My real son, and I love you so much it scares me some times. I never thought I could love someone so completely. I loved you before Cas, you know that? I met you first. And even then, when I didn’t know you were mine, I loved you. I was so proud of you.”
           Ben pressed his face into Dad’s shoulder.
           “I do wish I’d known about you,” Dad continued. “I wish I’d been in a place where your Mom would have trusted me. Where I would have been able to be in your life, and had the emotional maturity to do that. But that didn’t happen, and I’m just grateful that I have gotten to be in your life since. That you love me. That means everything to me, Ben.”
           “And yes, I’m having a baby with Cas. But I’m not doing it because I feel guilty about you. Cas wanted to have a child together because he loves you too, and wanted to have another child. You’re not in the way at all, buddy. And I wish that I could have given you what I will give this baby. But after the kind of life I’ve had…I want to be a good father for all my children. I have different chances with you and the baby, but I will take advantage of every last one, and if that means I go between playing video games with you and bottle feeding Little Bit, I will. Okay?”
           Ben cuddled closer, and Dad pulled him onto his lap. “I love you, Ben,” he repeated. “And I will always love you.”
           “Love you too,” Ben whispered.
           They sat there for a while.
           “Ben, what was your nightmare about?”
           Ben blushed, grateful that there wasn’t much light coming from the hall. “I…it was just a bad dream.”
           “Ben…”
           “I might have been reading some books before bed.”
           Without letting go of Ben, Dad leaned over and switched the light on. The book was sitting on Ben’s night table; he’d forgotten to hide it.
           “Ben!” Dean picked the book up. “Ben, this is one of the Renwick books!”
           “Yeah. I’m sorry!”
           “Ben, these aren’t accurate at all. I thought Sam got rid of them!”
           Ben brightened. “So…so witches can’t put marks on you for werewolves to find you?”
           “No!” Dad shook his head. “Ben, how many have you read?”
           “Maybe…maybe eight or ten?”
           Dad groaned.
           “Am I grounded?”
           “I think you’ve been punished enough,” Dad said, glaring darkly at the book. He switched the light back off, and Ben’s grip tightened around him.
           Dad rubbed his back. “Do you want to come lie down with me and Cas?”
           “I’m twelve, Dad.”
           “I know that.”
           “Um…yes please?”
           Dad picked him up and Ben clung to him. Cas was reading when they came in, a worried look in his eyes. Once Dad laid Ben down next to him, he passed Ben a plate with a sandwich and two cookies.
          “Do you want milk or water?”
          “Milk please,” Ben said, feeling unaccountably shy.
          Cas snapped and passed Ben the conjured glass. Ben ate quietly as Dad lay back, humming softly. When he finished, Cas took the plate from him.
          “Thanks Cas,” he said. Then—“you know you’re my dad too, right?”
          Cas smiled gently, and hugged Ben. “I do,” he promised, “and you are the son of my heart. That will never change.” He switched off the light and lay down.
          Ben lay between his dads. The room was dark, and for a second he felt a stab of fear. What if the books were real…
          Dad put an arm around him. “We’re right here, buddy. Nothing’s gonna hurt you.”
           Ben smiled. “Dad? Cas?”
           “Yes, Ben?”
           “I’m excited for the baby again.”
           “I am delighted,” Cas said. “Perhaps you would do us a favour and choose the name? We can’t settle on one.”
           “Sure!”
           And five months later, when the little baby girl was born, Ben was the third person to hold her, and he named her Mary Jo (he’d thought about Xena, but Cas said no).
           “Hi MJ,” he whispered (apparently nicknames were an important part of being a big brother). “I’m Ben, your big brother. I know you’re awesome already, and I love you. I won’t always be around, but I promise I’ll be there whenever you need me. And I’ll let you watch Predator. But you’re not reading the bad books.”
goodbye to safe and sound
@natsumeweek 2017 Day 4; Flowers/Nature
pairing: nishinatsu
title borrowed from youth by troye sivan
x
Somewhere in the latter half of their third and final year of high school, Natsume comes to a decision.
It's lunch period, and Satoru is digging through his bag for some change for food from the newly installed vending machine on the first floor when Adachi calls across the room, “Nishimura! Someone's here to see you!”
The whole class “ooooh”s, and Satoru looks up from his bag to find Natsume lingering in the doorway. He gives up on finding any change and heads for the hall, giving the snickering Adachi a dirty look as he passes him.
“You can just come in next time, you know,” Satoru points out, stretching his arms above his head. “No one cares. Half of those guys were in our class last year.”
“That's okay,” Natsume says. “I wanted to talk to you alone, anyway.”
Ignoring the automatic way his heart picks up at the implications, Satoru gestures towards the stairs with a flourish. Natsume smiles at him, quietly radiant, and leads the way up to the roof.
“Well, you've got me where you want me,” Satoru says, stepping out into the gray afternoon. It isn't wet yet, but the sky has been threatening rain all day. “What's up?”
Natsume shuffles for a moment, then visibly squares his shoulders. Brushing some of that long fringe out of his eyes, he meets Satoru's eyes bravely and says, “I'm going to college.”
It takes a minute for that to sink in. They haven't talked about their future plans in—months. It always made Natsume act cagey. Satoru had all but given up on having another conversation about this anytime soon.
“You—what? Seriously?” he says dumbly. Natsume's eyes are bright as he nods.
“I told my parents last night.” His smile becomes a touch wider, more pleased, bringing a flush to his cheeks. “They're—really proud. But Touko-san made me promise to visit every weekend, and Shigeru-san wants me to be very careful about the schools I apply to. And they're not letting me move out until I find a decent apartment, since a dorm probably, uh. Wouldn't work. And—apparently there's going to be an “empty nest” thing I have to look out for with Touko-san? But I'm not sure—”
Satoru all but lunges at him, snatching up his hands. “Natsume! Are you serious? You're really going to college?”
He nods calmly, beaming in that blink-and-you'll-miss-it blinding way of his. Satoru, previously reluctantly resigned to parting with this boy when he parted with this town, could just about burst.
“Natsume! That's awesome! We should—hey, let's try to get into the same one!” He tugs on their joined hands, almost vibrating with excitement. “We could study for our entrance exams together! We could even be roommates! Who'd want a dorm when I could share an apartment with you?”
Something affectionate joins the quiet joy in Natsume's expression and he warms with it. The wind picks up, and blows a small leaf into his hair. Satoru doesn't say anything. He hopes it stays there.
“I'd like that,” Natsume says, pretty even with the piece of green in his hair.
“So, the thing is,” Satoru explains, pacing slowly from one end of the room to the other, “I have this friend. And he—they—they're like, probably the best ever. The best ever. You know?”
The voice on the other end of the phone sighs patiently. “Okay.”
“Okay. So, it's possible that, I kind of—you know—I'm kind of—like, ridiculously in love with them.”
Saying the words out loud makes his whole face burn and Satoru buries it in his free hand, even though he's alone in his bedroom with the door firmly shut and the blinds drawn. There are no outside witnesses around for this confession; only an older brother, sworn to secrecy and silence.
“Go on,” Kiyoshi nudges, not unkindly.
“But the thing is—the thing is, I don't think I'm ever gonna tell them that,” Satoru says slowly. His face is still cradled against his palm, the grip on his cellphone turning white-knuckled. “And that kind of sucks.”
Kiyoshi is quiet for what feels like a long time. If not for the soft, tinny music Satoru can hear behind him, he would feel a little abandoned in the silence. His heart is a lump in the bottom of his throat.
“Do you want my advice?” his brother asks in a soft tone.
“No,” Satoru replies quickly. “No advice. Just—”
“Yeah,” Kiyoshi says, “okay.” His voice is more gentle and more fond, now, the way it always was when Satoru was much, much younger. For all that Kiyoshi is a hundred miles away at university, this is the closest Satoru has felt to him in a long time. “That really sucks, little brother.”
It surprises Satoru into grinning, albeit a little wetly. He rubs his eyes, then finally drops his hand, and flops backwards onto his bed.
“Thanks, bro.”
“But you know,” Kiyoshi adds carefully, “he wouldn't hate you if you told him. You know that, right?”
“I know,” Satoru says. And he does. He could upset this friendship they've built and shove a bunch of selfish feelings at him and Natsume would still be as kind, as accepting of Satoru as he's always been.
But he doesn't deserve that.
They're about to take a big step, moving away into the wider world—and it's big for both of them, but its huge for Natsume. This is the first time he's ever left on his own terms, the first time he's had a home to leave behind that he'll miss, and he's already looking over his shoulder before he's even gone. Already missing it before he's had a chance to try anything new.
Now, of all times, Natsume needs something tried and true, something to fall back on when he starts to falter. He deserves to be happy, and safe in his happiness, with people he can count on to not go springing heavy confessions on him at the worst possible opportunities.
So.
At the end of the day, this is fine. This is good. Satoru really just wants to be what Natsume needs, whatever he needs. His dumb crush can sit on the back of the shelf and collect dust for the rest of his life for all he cares. But—
“I just,” he says lamely, “wanted to say it.”
“I understand,” Kiyoshi replies. And it sounds like he does.
He's late, and his sneakers slap across the wet sidewalk as he runs. It's finally raining, just as the heavy gray clouds looming across the sky all day promised, and Satoru was supposed to meet Natsume at the bus depot ten minutes ago.
They're going to the city, to stay with his friend Shibata. There's a mock exam tomorrow for the university they've decided on, and Kiyoshi insisted they should go try their luck and see where they need to improve.
The rain is coming down in sheets, but Satoru can see his friend clearly as he rounds the corner. The street is otherwise deserted, and Natsume's fair hair and white umbrella stand out like a tiny beacon, and Satoru smiles across the street at him, opening his mouth around Natsume's name.
He stops.
His mouth clips shut.
Natsume is laughing, his open umbrella on the ground by his feet. He lifts his hands, fingers spreading open, arms stretching up and out on either side of him, and the rain falls around him in a wide dome. The ground at his feet is dry, the weeds tucked between cracks in the pavement waving briskly in the wind.
His ugly cat sees Satoru first. It blinks, unhurried, and considers him for a long moment with that expression of smiling disdain ingrained in all cats everywhere. Then its smile becomes more of a sneer, and—and impossibly, it speaks.
“Good luck explaining this away, Natsume.”
Natsume looks down at the cat with a frown, and then looks up, directly at Satoru. Their eyes meet, and in an instant Natsume's laughter disappears. The bubble of dry air around him seems to pop, and rain pours down on him as immediately as a faucet turned on above his head.
At some point, Satoru dropped his own umbrella. The cold feeling of water soaking through his hair and dripping down his face is secondary and far away.
Natsume moves a step forward with jerky, anxious motions. His face is white with fear. “I—I can—Nishimura, listen. What you saw—I can explain it. Please.”
Satoru stares at this boy he knows so well, at the cat he's carried around in his arms when it refused to walk in the heat, at the rain around them that's beginning to balloon up and away again—as though something big and invisible is standing above and over Natsume, giving him shelter.
Satoru stares, and slowly shakes his head. His breath trembles. Natsume's expression is impossible to look at, so he closes his eyes. And he hides there, in the darkness behind his eyelids, as he says, very quietly, “No.”
Kindred hunters
Summary: Jody, Donna and Female Reader go on a hunt together.
Word Count: 3022 Warnings: Vampires, light cussing, very fluffy, lesbian relationship
Tumblr media
It was about 8 am on a Friday, you were waiting to meet up with Jody Mills and her other hunter friend, Donna. You had gotten in the night before and stayed across the street at some little hotel. The Sioux Falls diner you were at was busy with folks coming in and out. You were early for the meet, hell, you were always early. It gave you the necessary time to relax your mind before hitting the road. Your thoughts wandered to the first time you met Jody at a Hunter’s gathering, Asa, introduced you. May he rest in peace. You knew you were kindred in an instant, you were both law enforcement, hunters and supernatural shit had touched your lives. The two of you had been on a number of hunts together in the past year. You had heard of Donna from Jody and her girls but never met her. You were pretty sure that she was going to be awesome too, but you were almost jealous of her, she had known Jody longer and maybe had formed a better bond. You tried to clear your mind, that’s just stupid high school girl shit, you needed to shut that out of your head.
You heard the waitress say, “Good morning Sheriff!” Your attention was immediately turned to the door, when you saw Jody and a beautiful, fair skinned blonde walking towards you. You stood up, and gave Jody a hug, “Long time, stranger!” You joked. Before Jody could introduce you, the blonde was embracing you, “This is my friend, Donna, Donna Hanscum, that I have told you about.“ Jody told you as you got one of the most akward but best hugs ever. Donna smelled clean and a hint of vanilla lingered, her long blonde hair grazed over your face as the two of you hugged just a little too long for a first meeting. The patrons starting to notice you all, so you pulled out of the tight hold you had on each other, “Oh (Y/N), I have heard so much about you, I just know we’re going to be sisters too!” Donna sweetly said in a Minnesotan accent. “I couldn’t agree more.” You replied. Like that all the jealousy went away. The three of you sat down at the booth you were at. You made small talk, Jody filled you in on how the girls were doing. Everyone ordered some breakfast and just enjoyed discussing police work with other women. The waitress, knew Jody well, and asked who we were and what we were doing with her. “Well these are my good friends, they are also officers,” both Donna and you pulled out your badges, it was habit, “and we are going to have a girls weekend.” Jody explained. “Kathy!“ You said reading the waitress’ name tag, “I am so excited, just to get away. It has been far too long. We are probably just going to drink too much wine and go out dancing, you know.” You elaborated on Jody’s story to make it more believable so that the waitress would leave you alone. Jody shot you a ‘way to go’ look.
You left your car at the hotel, you had already gotten permission from the manager. The three of you, hopped into Jody’s sedan. You sat in the middle of the back seat, optimal for conversing, Donna rode shotgun. You all immediately started talking about this case once all the doors were shut. “So the Winchesters called you?” You asked Jody. “Yeah, they are working with these British Men of Letters.” Jody explained. “I heard they were a bunch of douches.” You responded. “Language!” Donna blurted out. Oh shit, you thought! You are going to have to watch that. You’re like a drunken sailor. “Oh they are! But they have this plan to get rid of all the Vampires from North America.” Jody continued. “And the boys are ok with this? I mean Benny was one of Dean’s best friends and he even saved Sam. Not all vamps are bad.” you inquired. “Well I guess they’re ok with it. All of them may not be bad but most are and that’s probably good enough to them. I for one don’t mind killing me some vamps after what they did to my Alex.” Jody reminded you. “So the intel says that there are about fifteen vamps in the nest.” “You sure we can’t call the Winchester’s?” Donna asked. “They’re working another nest somewhere else. We are on our own.” Jody told us. “Ladies, we got this!” You encouraged. “If we ambush them, we should be in and out in less than an hour.” You all drove away from the diner at about 9:30 am, it was a long drive but Donna was chatty. You didn’t mind, most of the hunters you knew were guys, who didn’t talk unless they were trying to get into your pants. “So how did you know Asa? God rest ‘em.“ Donna asked. “My brother, umm… he was killed by a wendigo a number of years ago.” You told your story. “I am sorry.” Donna gave you her condolences. “Thanks, D! I wasn’t supposed to work Marshall’s case ‘cause he is family. But my unit is small and they needed me. So,… Asa came into my town and tried to BS me with a fake badge. I saw right through him. I flat out asked what was going on. He gave me the whole ‘monsters are real’ talk and we hunted it down and killed the wendigo together. And… that is how I became a hunter.” You told them. The conversation continued until you felt it was ok to ask even more personal questions. “So are you married, Donna?” You asked. “I was, but he left me, because he thought I was loved chocolate cake more than him. He said I was fat.“ “What!?” You interrupted. “You are gorgeous! And no where near fat! What an amazing ass? Sorry I cussed, D” Jody piped up, “That is what I said too.. He was a ‘grade A’ ass!” “You are so much better off without him.” You supportively said. “Well…what about you?” Donna inquired. “You got a man at home?” “Since my brother died, I haven’t had a real serious relationship. Sure, I take a guy home every now and then, they’re easy to catch. But since she-she left.” something caught in your throat, you almost started to cry right there. Shit, don’t do this. Why are opening up so much? You never talk about her. The pain is years old but it is so fresh in your mind. “My-My girlfriend left me when I became a hunter.” Your lip quivered as you spoke, “She didn’t like me being a police officer anyways and this was even more dangerous.” You realized at that moment you had never admitted that you were into women to Jody before. She probably just assumed you were straight since she always saw you with were men. “I wish I could just hug you now.” Donna said warmly. You smiled and knew she was just the nicest person. “So you like guys and girls?” She asked you. “Yeah, yeah, I am-am bi.” You cautiously said, “I have dated both, and I have definitely slept with more men in my time but my best relationships have always been with women.“ You paused feeling a sort of a little tension. “I am very sorry if that will make us working together weird.” “I don’t think it will be a problem at all.” Donna told you and Jody agreed. They didn’t care as long as you could kick ass. “Ok, so prying eyes want to know. Since you are the youngest and cutest of us, have you ever hooked up with one or both of the Winchester’s?” Jody asked you. You felt like you had just entered in a game of Truth or Dare that no one told you about. “Well I am not the only cute one in this car.“ As you looked at Donna, “The short answer is ‘No!’ but the last hunt we were on, Dean and I were at a bar and he was laying it on thick. I was probably only a shot or two from sayin’ ‘yes’. And don’t get me started on Sam’s cute butt either. But honestly, those two always use me as bait. So, no, no I wouldn’t. It is like I am their personal honey pot.” “That you are!” Donna blurted out. She looked horrified that she said that but you thought it was kinda cute. Both you and Jodes raised eyebrows at each other through the rearview mirror. “Sam has always been a perfect gentleman but I can only imagine that both of them are well equipped, if you know what I mean.” The whole car busted out in laughter.
After a few pit stops, the three of you arrived at an old house. The sun was about to set, you hated daylight savings, you all staked out the place from a safe distance about a mile or two away. “What do you say, we come back tomorrow?” Donna asked while passing the binoculars to you.
You all agreed, the vamps were going to wake up soon. It was best to do it sometime tomorrow morning and get a good night sleep.
You found a cheap motel and got one room. That night you all had a girl’s night, Jody bought a couple of bottles of wine and you all watched a few rom coms. You even did each other’s make up but and hair. You enjoyed spending time with the finest woman out there. Jody suggested that you guys play rock, paper, scissors. for the pull out couch. Poor Donna lost.
“You can sleep next to me, D. I wont bite… HARD!” You knew it was just the wine talking. She of course just simply smiled, blushing a little and went to the pull out. Jody just shook her head at you acting like a fool.
The next day, the hunt was almost text book. The three of you, covered the exits and crept into the house. You cut heads off of eight vamps before anyone woke up. You had a small tussle with one before Jody sliced her head off. The three of you had each other’s backs. You were in and out within thirty minutes. All vamps were killed, not one got away.
Tumblr media
You all went back to the car, Jody called Sam to let him know the three of you were done. You and Donna went to the truck of the car. You wanted to grab a rag from your bag to wipe the vampire blood off your blade. Donna needed a new shirt, hers got covered. One the vamps she killed was a real squirter. She turned her back to you and removed her blue and white plaid flannel over shirt, when she stripped, she had on a white tank top, and you could her black bra showing right through it. Her long blonde hair cascaded down her back, it was curling at the ends. There was no other word but beautiful. Her curves were so soft, she was a ‘Marilyn.’ You started to think how wonderful it would be to grow old with Donna, she probably would understood you more than anyone else ever would.
Then your eyes locked on to hers, you were so embarrassed, “Oh! I didn’t mean to stare.” You looked away, pushing a piece of hair behind your ear as you smiled. Donna was still a little flushed from the fight but then her whole face went entirely pink, she was blushing, and she was blushing at you. You looked up, wow, was she smiling at you? She was, she was smiling at you. You two were having a moment. Shit, you should kiss those amazing plump lips. She will never make the first move, you will have to man up. Don’t think about it, just do it, Nike! You stepped closer, she didn’t move.
You heard Jody’s voice above your own ramblings in your head. “Ya’ll up to hit another nest today?” She yelled, breaking your moment with Donna.
Donna’s gaze was broken as she exclaimed, “H-E-double hockey sticks yeah!” Damn, She was so fucking adorable. You really needed to teach her how to cuss. Of course you agreed to go on another hunt.
“So get this, about three towns west of here, there are two separate nests. The Winchesters want us to hit one nest, while they hit the other one.” Jody explained.
“How many we lookin’ at?” You asked.
Jody continued, “It should only be about ten this time.”
“Lets do it to it! We are burnin’ day light!” Donna let out.
The drive was only about an hour away, soon the three of you were outside an old abandoned warehouse. Jody called Sam back. The plan was to get a lay of the land and attack in a half an hour. You decided to all enter from the same door, form a circle in case one woke up. The first four were easy slice and dices. Then one went after Donna, your heart raced as you ran to help her. You killed that son of a bitch with one flick of your wrist because no one is hurting your friends. You formed back to your circle and as they attacked the three of you, you all sliced through the rest of them. Overall, everyone walked away safe and the vamps were dead. It was a successful hunt. There were only a couple of bumps and scrapes between all three of you.
Jodes called Sam again, they were also done. He said to meet them at a local bar for celebratory drinks.
The hugs from the guys were always the best. Sam and Dean introduced you to their Mom. It was weird meeting her. You had heard all about her, drank a lot of beer with Dean over those you lost but now she was back. You wondered how it would be if your brother was back from the dead.
Sam, Jody and Mary were at the the end of the bar. Dean stole you away to somewhere more personal. He was all over you, asking to get you drinks and touching your face and waist. He had always been into you and you had always liked him in return but your thoughts kept returning to that moment with Donna.
She was over by the jukebox flipping through the songs. You couldn’t help but look at how plump her ass looked in those tight jeans as she bent over. Dean was leaning in and you were focused on her. You excused yourself from Dean and walked over to Donna.
Your hand snaked around her waist. “so, you wanna dance?” You asked, she just smiled and looked down. You pulled a quarter out of your pocket, “pick something good.”
She took a moment and turned on something slow. You grabbed her by a hand and you pulled her close to you. Your hands trailed over her body to her waist. She in kind, gently placed her hands on your waist. She just looked at the ground and smiled a huge toothy grin. She didn’t know how wonderful she was to you.
Out of the corner of your eye you saw Sam walk over to Dean, you could tell they were talking about how you had turned Dean down to be with the lovely Donna. Your foreheads pressed together, you couldn’t stop smiling either. The last two days were some the best you had have since you become a hunter. The two of you danced like you were meant to be together. You heard a cat call from some red neck by the pool table for you two to kiss. You didn’t pay him any mind, you pulled Donna’s waist closer to yours, your belt buckles touched. She was so comfortable in your arms. You were afraid she would run from her feelings. It had happened before with other women. When the song was over, you whispered, “you are more beautiful than anything I have ever seen.” She blushed again. You could tell that she didn’t know what to do. You took her hand and kissed it gently and the both of you joined the rest of the group at the bar.
Later in the evening, you walked her outside, Donna confessed, “I have never had feelings for a girl before.” You smiled and kissed her gently, she didn’t pull away, she didn’t run, she kissed you back. The kiss was warm, caring, loving everything that she was.
The rest of the hunters came out of the bar to witness your make out session with Donna against the Impala. Dean swaggered over, “If that isn’t the hottest thing I have ever seen. Damn, I have to admit you two look good together!”
Sam made a ‘woot’ noise from a distance.
You and Donna just smiled, your face hurt so much from all the smiling. The last time you were this happy your brother was alive.
Jody told you that she was going to sleep in the boys room and give you some time alone.
You were so nervous, your hands shook when put the keys in the door. She was nervous too, it was her first time with a woman. The door opened, you both just looked in for a few minutes. You held her hand and looked into her soft blue eyes, “I don’t want you feel uncomfortable, if you don’t want to. I understand. I am not rushing you. We could just talk and hold each other if you want. I am…” you didn’t finish the last part. She knew what you were going to say.
“I want to know what this is.” Donna took the first step in. You closed the door, and that night you made sure that every inch of her body was worshipped. You made sure she knew how much you were falling in love with her. You made all those feelings of inadequacy fade away.
I love all the likes and reblogs but I really do want your feedback. Please leave me a comment; let me know what worked or what didn’t. If you hated it let me know what I could do different. It may determine how I write my next fic.
“Give it to me! You know you want to!” Writer winks at reader.
The sound of your fingers tapping on the letters of your keyboard blended with the somewhat quiet ambience of your job’s office. There were a few murmurs from gossiping colleagues and the occasional ring of a phone, but you felt nothing but content in your small cubicle.
It had been a month since you left your native country to pursue your dream career. Once you finished grad school, you decided you wanted a change of environment, so you searched for a city that could provide you with multiple opportunities.
That city turned out to be London.
Quite naturally, your parents were a bit nervous knowing fully well that their beloved daughter would be finally leaving their nest. Nonetheless, they supported your decision with the comfort of knowing that you would be fine on your own.
A small smile decorated your face as you complimented yourself mentally for making such a big move towards a brighter future. You just knew your life would be amazing.
As you finished typing up a report for your latest project, you felt a tap on your shoulder. You stopped momentarily and turned around to see your good friend Gina grinning at you.
“Hey, Gina. I see you’re in a great mood today,” you mentioned, returning a grin of your own.
“Absolutely, because I’m dragging you out this weekend!” Gina exclaimed somewhat loudly, clearly excited about something.
Gina was often known to be very moody and rather strange. She didn’t like to socialize with her co-workers unless she was forced to interact with them regarding work matters, but something about the manner in which she carried herself was quite alluring. She attracted attention wherever she went, even though she clearly did not want it. Men seem to stumble over their tongues when speaking to her and women blushed coyly in her presence.
Plus, she was freaking rich.
Like, “I could buy Queen Elizabeth and her family freaking rich,” as stated by Gina herself. You weren’t actually sure that was possible, but then again, Gina usually told the truth.
And yet, she chose to work here and associate herself with you. You have no idea why she liked you, but you weren’t complaining. It was nice having a friend here in London.
“What did you have mind?” you asked.
“Remember how you told me a while ago that you always wanted to attend a masquerade party?” Gina asked as she watched your eyes grow wide.
“Oh my God! Are we going to one?” you squealed happily as your friend giggled at your behavior.
“Yes, I was recently invited by a good friend of mine. He’s the one who’s throwing the party,” Gina replied.
“I didn’t know you had other friends besides me,” you joked causing Gina to poke you in the shoulder.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me,” Gina responded somewhat seriously, “but I like you, so you’ll definitely learn more things.”
You smiled at your friend’s small confession. You felt a little warmth in your heart, happy that you were making a decent impression on Gina. This was definitely going to be a great weekend.
But before your friend could leave your cubicle, there was a question lingering on your mind.
“Gina, I was wondering about something. Why do we always go out at night? I literally never see you during the day.”
A neatly-shaped eyebrow lifted on Gina’s face.
“What are you talking about, silly? Yes, you do. Aren’t I here at work right now?”
“Yeah,” you sighed exasperatedly, “but I mean like outside, walking-down-the-street-when-the-sun-is-out. I mean, you literally get picked up in the basement and you only go out when it’s cloudy or pitch dark.
You felt a manicured finger on your lip and blushed. Even Gina had you flustered with her actions sometimes.
“Shush and just accept it, woman,” Gina smirked mischievously. “The sun isn’t kind to everyone.”
You pouted at your friend and watched as she winked and walked away. Yeah, you’re going to drag her ass outside one of these “sunny” days.
Friday had finally arrived and as soon as the clock hit 4:00pm, Gina snatched you up from your cubicle and led you straight to the basement of your job’s building. There, her driver waited patiently and opened the door to the back of the limo once you were close enough.
As soon as the limo had pulled off, you had learned that the masquerade party that you both were invited to was a word-of-mouth thing. Only the wealthy, powerful, and most attractive people were invited by the host. The only way you had a chance to be included was if one of these people brought you along as a “plus one.”
Luckily for you, you were just that.
After a while, the both of you were dropped off at a high-end fashion boutique. Once you walked into the store, you were absolutely blown away by the beautiful formal wear (and prices) being displayed. One dress in particular caught your eye.
It was a lacy dress that was short and playful in the front and long and luxurious in the back, almost like a modern-day ballroom dress. The top of the dress was heart-shaped and it hugged the waist of the mannequin as the bottom portion billowed down towards the floor. The back of the dress had a rather dramatic plunge line, which displayed the milky back of the mannequin.
It was perfect, but with the salary you had, it was impossible to buy it.
“That’s a beautiful dress. Do you like it?” Gina asked as she examined the material.
“I do, but I’m going to have to find something more within my price range,” you sighed as you stared longingly at the dress.
“Excuse me,” Gina called out to one of the saleswomen. “Can my friend fit on this dress?”
You lifted an eyebrow at Gina’s question.
“What’s the point of me trying on a dress I can’t even buy?” you grumbled slightly. Gina simply giggled at your behavior.
“Did you think I was just shopping for me? I can’t be the only one just stunting on all these people.”
“Holy shit, are you serious?” you looked at her in shocked. “Plus, I didn’t even know they used the word stunting here…”
“Of course, I’m serious,” Gina said as she flipped her hair smoothly, causing the nearby saleswomen to sigh dreamily. “Like I said before, you’re my friend and I take care of people I like.”
You brought Gina into a bear hug, causing her to hug you back even tighter.
“You’re freaking awesome, you know that?” you complimented as you pretended to cry dramatically.
“Hell yes, I am.”
~~~~~~
The next day was spent prepping for the party. You went to a relaxing spa with your wealthy friend where you both got your nails, hair, and makeup done. It felt so nice to be pampered for a change.
Eventually, the sun said its farewell for the day and moon and stars came to greet all those whom they shined upon. The limo that both you and Gina were currently in pulled up unexpectedly to rather large castle. You were rather surprised, previously assuming that the party would be held at a public building or at a fancy estate, but never a goddamn castle.
Magic was truly in the air tonight.
“Nervous?” Gina smirked as she watched your face with amusement.
“Honestly, a little. I didn’t know it was going to be in a castle...” you trailed off, admiring the beauty of the ancient building.
“Oh, that…the host lives there.”
“WHAT?!” came your surprised response.
Once the driver had opened the door to the limo, both you and Gina put on your elaborate masquerade masks and stepped out of the vehicle. The two of you walked over to the entrance where bodyguards were checking guests off their list. Gina briefly mentioned both of your names and guards granted you both access inside the lavish castle.
As you followed Gina towards the area where the party was being held, you marveled at the sheer size of the castle’s interior. The hallways were wide and spacious, but the guests who chattered and laughed among themselves filled the potential emptiness. The walls and ceilings were as pristine as marble and the intricate gold patterns that resided on the hard surface showered the building in richness. Old portraits of people long gone hung with pride along the walls as lit candles bathed the building in warm light. Smooth red carpet ran along shiny floors, leading you both to the area of the main event.
You couldn’t believe the room that you had stepped into. Your friend’s claims about a masquerade party was actually a masquerade ball along the lines of a circus. Scattered across the room were acrobatic performers who put on wondrous acts on their circular podiums. Some were fire breathing and swallowing swords while others contorted their bodies in odd and sometimes erotic poses. As you walked among the guests who seemed to float about the room in their colorful carnival masks and outfits, you almost missed the aerial silk performers that hung from the ceilings.
Everything was absolutely pleasing and marvelous to your eyes. Never have you thought something as amazing as this place had existed. Even the food on the banquet tables and the wine that swirled haphazardly in glasses of guests were enticing.
“So what do you think, Y/N?” Gina asked as she pulled you out of your daze. “Is it what you expected?”
“Is it what I expected?!” you choked, your excitement getting to you. “This place is freaking amazing.”
“Well, expect more parties like this. My friend is always hosting these,” Gina winked.
Before you could ask who exactly her friend was, a dark-haired man with a black and white mask approached her.
“Ah, Gina. Looking beautiful as always,” the man complimented with a smooth accent.
“Hey, Renaldo,” Regina replied as they both greeted one another with a kiss on the cheek. “How was the Maldives?”
“Fantastic. Just what I needed to get away from this place,” Renaldo explained as he gave a dazzling smile. “It’s been hectic since my partner and I decided to merge our company.”
“I hope the weather treated you well,” Gina grinned as the man chuckled. “I heard the sun is quite harsh over there.”
“It is, but I was well accommodated, so I had very little to worry about,” the man winked before setting his sights on you. “So, I see you brought a friend along.”
“Yes, indeed I have. Renaldo, this is my good friend Y/N. We work at the same company together.”
The man nodded at you and you smiled back somewhat shyly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” you said politely.
“Likewise, Ms. Y/N,” Renaldo smirked. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to have a dance with your companion. I missed her dearly.”
“Oh, Renaldo. Always the dramatic,” Gina laughed. “Make sure to have fun while I’m away, Y/N!”
Before you could say anything more, you watched Gina being whisked away into the boisterous crowd with her friend. The multitudes of colors and dancing guests prevented you from seeing where they had both gone.
And just like that, you began to feel small.
The people around you were unnaturally attractive. You weren’t sure whether it was from possible plastic surgery or being fed the healthiest of food, but it was strange how there were a lack of people who looked…well normal. Power and wealth radiated off them, as if they were all above the common masses. Yet the way they presented themselves made you briefly wonder what it would be like in their shoes.
Nonetheless, you felt like you did not belong there, regardless of being invited by one of the elite themselves. You really liked Gina, but you weren’t like her and the people who danced around you. You were so caught up in your small moment of distress, you almost didn’t feel the gentle tap on your shoulder. Spinning around, your breath became trapped in your chest once your eyes landed on the stranger before you.
Never in your life had your eyes beheld a man so beautiful. His all black suit contrasted sharply against the pale color of his skin as shaggy brown hair sat atop his head. A single earring hung from one of his ears as rings graced his slender fingers. The crowning piece of his formal outfit was the metal mask that covered the top portion of his eyes. The mask had several sharp, jagged edges as opposed to the gentle curling lines that ran along the surface of the mask. It was made quite beautifully, as if a master blacksmith had created it himself, but what really sold you was the man’s eyes.
Scarlet red eyes, framed by black eyeliner stared deep into your soul, causing you to grow bashful from their intensity. A boyish grin grew on his lips, seemingly pleased with the effect he had on you.
“I’m sorry, miss. I saw you standing alone and couldn’t help but think that a gorgeous woman such as yourself should be having fun,” he complimented, causing you to grow warm.
“Gorgeous?” you questioned, not expecting that sort of comment from a man that would slay you in a beauty contest.
“Absolutely. What? You don’t think you are?” the man teased, causing you to blush.
“It’s not that…it was just a bit unexpected,” you admitted as you watched him carefully.
“If that’s the case, could I continue to lavish you with compliments for the rest of the night?” he asked confidently, moving closer to stand in front of you.
At this point, you weren’t even sure you were going to survive the night. This man didn’t even give you a damn minute to get acclimated with the place.
“But I don’t even know you,” you said somewhat hesitantly, even though you already knew you wanted to spend all night partying with the guy.
You felt his hand slide into one of your own as he brought it up to his face. Your eyes widened at his subtle movements.
“My name is Lu Han,” he replied as he brought soft lips to the back of your hand. “If want to know me, say the words and I promise you won’t regret it.”
You felt eyes from some of the guests watching the interaction between you and Lu Han. What was so interesting about watching a guy romancing the dress off some random woman? You decided to say the magic words, regardless of the looks and whispers that swirled around the two of you.
“Can I get to know you, Lu Han?” you asked, entranced by the ethereal being that stood before you.
“You will,” Lu Han smiled as he pulled you slowly through the crowd of partygoers, “but first, let’s dance for a bit.”
The two of you arrived at the center of the room where a flurry of people spun to a classical song. Lu Han carefully guided you to an empty spot before placing a hand on your hip while holding your hand with the other. You were grateful that Gina had prepared you for this sort of dance although it had been difficult getting the footwork down.
The two of you blended among the swirling guests as the music took control of your bodies. The tension between you and Lu Han gradually faded as a much lighter tone filled you both with delight. You weren’t expecting to have this much fun with a man you just met, but you couldn’t help joining in with his contagious laughter. It was as if the two of you were drunk on pure bliss.
Song after song, you twirled around the room with Lu Han, forgetting that you were among other guests. The glee that graced his angelic face as the two of you danced made your heart skip harder than any man had done.
After a while your aching feet brought your dancing marathon to a stop, but you still had all the intention of getting to know Lu Han. The two of you found yourselves at a relatively quiet part of the room where some guests lingered away from the ruckus of the party. Seeing an empty loveseat, both you and Lu Han walked over and sat down. A contented sigh left your lips as a small chuckle came from Lu Han. You looked over at him curiously, wondering why he had laughed.
“What’s so funny?” you asked as his eyes met yours.
Shifting in his seat to face you, you watched as a smile danced on his face.
“You’re all tuckered out although the night is still young,” Lu Han snickered as he watched you pout.
“Of course I am. We’ve been dancing back to back without a break,” you responded. “I mean, why aren’t you out of breath?”
“Simple. I don’t get as tired as you do,” Lu Han replied smartly, holding back another laugh when he seen you frown.
“Oh, so you’re one of those smart alecks, always cracking wise-ass remarks,” you said.
Quickly clamping a hand over your mouth, you felt embarrassed, thinking you had insulted the mysterious man. You were having so much fun, you completely forgot you were in a room of people that could actually make your life a living hell if you rubbed them the wrong way.
Lu Han smirked at your reaction and slowly pulled your hand away from your mouth. You watched him quietly as he held your hand in his for the third time that night.
“I see you’re both beautiful and bold,” Lu Han smirked as his thumb rubbed the back of your hand soothingly. “A lovely combination, I must add.”
“Lu Han…” you began, unsure of what to say next to the attractive male.
“Would you like to start getting to know me?” Lu Han asked with a subtle tone of eagerness, almost as if he wanted to please you.
Smiling at him, you nodded.
“I think that’s a great idea. Should we take off our masks?” you questioned, anxious to see his entire face.
Lu Han answered your question by removing his mask, causing you to follow suit. Once the masks had been removed, the two of you looked up and locked eyes. The tension between the two of you slowly returned as the both of you stared at one another.
Seeing him without the mask, in your opinion, was a blessing. You knew he was attractive to begin with, but this was definitely unfair. His features were soft and delicate like that of a prince and you wanted nothing more than to run your fingers along the smooth surface of his cheek. You were left breathless, not understanding how this masterpiece was sitting in front of you.
“Wow…” was all you could say. It was impossible for you to form words at the moment.
“I thought I was the one giving compliments tonight…” Lu Han whispered, seemingly caught in a daze as well. You noticed his cheeks becoming slightly pink, causing you to wonder if you had done that to him.
“Um, so it seems we accomplished step one,” you mentioned, trying to recover from your daze. Lu Han laughed at your comment.
“It seems we have, but before we continue, I would love to get your name.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry!” you exclaimed, realizing that you hadn’t shared that important information with him. “It’s Y/N.”
“Y/N…” Lu Han spoke quietly, relishing how it sounded on his tongue. “What would you like to know about me?”
“Hmm, what do you do for a living?”
“I travel the world and host elaborate parties for the wealthy,” Lu Han replied, watching as your eyes widened in surprise.
“That sounds pretty cool,” you gasped excitedly. “Did you just happen to throw this party too? ‘Cause I mean, it’s pretty elaborate.”
“I did,” Lu Han answered proudly. “Do you like it?”
“I love it,” you nodded. “I bet the guy you threw this for is certainly pleased.”
“Oh, I am. I got to meet you because of it.”
You froze suddenly, the statement throwing you off guard. Lu Han smiled mischievously, loving all the reactions that you had been giving him throughout the night. He found you entertaining.
“You mean to tell me that you’re the owner of this castle?” you asked carefully, not prepared for the answer you knew you’d receive.
“Yes and you are welcome to visit anytime as well as attend any party I throw,” Lu Han replied genuinely.
“Holy shit.”
As the night went on, you continued your conversation with Lu Han. The party raged on without any signs of stopping, but it had been long forgotten by the two of you. The eagerness of wanting to know each other was on a much deeper level then spinning around the room and being in a drunken stupor.
You learned that Lu Han had moved to London from Beijing years ago. His services were often in demand in Europe, so he decided that it was wise to move to London. He mentioned that it had taken him a while to adjust to ways of his new environment, but he eventually grew to love it. Still, Beijing was his ancestral home, so he bought a flat in the bustling city just in case he had grown homesick.
He had continued to mention that he had come from a long line of merchants. His family’s wealth had been established due to their success in the wine industry. As for Lu Han, he was more interested in attending and hosting lavish parties that brought together people from far and wide. Using his family’s wealth, he created a professional hosting business that attracted all types of people who simply wanted to have a good time.
The secret to his success was the “word-of-mouth” aspect of his business. The public wasn’t aware of it due to the fact that it was secretly spread among the elite as well as anybody else that had connections. It was a rather risky move, considering that most businesses relied on the public, but Lu Han didn’t appear to have a problem being successful. People were naturally curious and usually liked the idea of being involved in something that the public had no inkling of.
After a long night of deep conversation and excitable dancing, the masquerade party came to a gradual end. You watched from the crowd as Lu Han thanked his guests for such a marvelous time. You didn’t miss how his red eyes landed on you as the guests erupted into a loud cheer for their charming host. As the guests began to file out of the room, you heard your name being called.
“I see you met my friend Lu Han,” Gina teased as she walked over to you. “The two of you seemed quite cozy over there on that loveseat.”
“We were just talking,” you said bashfully. “He’s a really cool guy.”
“He can be quite the flirt, so watch yourself,” Gina warned jokingly. “A lot of women are interested in him. They wouldn’t hesitate to throw themselves at his feet.”
You pouted slightly at her comment. Of course women would be attracted to Lu Han. He was handsome and rich; someone you knew you didn’t stand a chance with. Maybe you were a little in over your head thinking he would be interested in you.
As you and Gina prepared to leave, you felt someone tap your shoulder. You turned around and found Lu Han smiling at you. His mannerism now slightly different from when you had met him earlier.
“I hope you had a wonderful evening,” Lu Han said as he watched your face light up.
“I did! Thank you so much for having me and keeping me company for the night, unlike someone,” you teased, causing Gina to roll her eyes playfully.
“I see you’re friends with Gina,” Lu Han mentioned. “Make sure she doesn’t get you into trouble.”
“I should be telling her that,” Gina laughed. “You’re the one who’s a handful. I’ll have to keep you from corrupting her.”
The three of you chuckled. You felt that all of you were bonding nicely. Maybe, you could all hang out sometime in the future.
“Well, I guess we should be heading out,” you began, although you wanted to continue talking to Lu Han.
“Can I see you again?” Lu Han inquired as he stepped closer to you.
Gina snickered as she watched you grow shy under Lu Han’s piercing stare.
“Yeah, I’d like that,” you answered truthfully.
Maybe you did have a chance with him.
“Then I’ll see you at the next party,” Lu Han grinned.
~~~~~~
From that very night, you had received several personal invites from Lu Han to attend his wild and fantastical parties. You found yourself getting dolled up almost every weekend with Gina until it had become routine.
The parties that Lu Han had were never boring. It was like every party that he threw had a different theme: Roaring Twenties, Arabian Nights, All-White Affairs, etc. You couldn’t understand how someone could come up with so many ideas. Even the forms of entertainment that he provided amazed you because you hadn’t even heard of some of them. No wonder so many people hired him to host their parties.
Although the parties were always a blast, you had the most fun partying with Lu Han. It astonished you as to how he was able to find you each time in a large crowd of party-goers. Your outfits and hairstyles were different each time, making it difficult for any average person to recognize you. But then again, Lu Han was anything but average.
You and Lu Han had become inseparable. Gina purposely began to leave you as she ran off with Renaldo for the night. She had slyly mentioned more than once that you and Lu Han would be cute together, causing your face to heat up each time. From that point and on, she made it her mission to leave you alone with Lu Han. Regardless, it didn’t bother you. You never had an uncomfortable moment with him.
As you spent more time with Lu Han, you realized that he was much more than just a confident flirt. He always took the time to chat with you after dancing and never left you out of any conversations with his flamboyant friends. He was a good listener, always paying attention to the small details of your life and never finding anything that you said boring.
His affections also didn’t go unnoticed. Back hugs became his way of greeting you whenever you came to his parties. At first, it had scared you, causing you to almost scream bloody murder in the middle of his ballroom. As time went by, it was expected and you were more than happy to have his slender arms wrapped around your body.
Another night had come and you found yourself back at Lu Han’s castle for another event. Once you had reached the ballroom with Gina, she ran off with Renaldo. You were pretty sure they were dating at this point, although Gina had repeatedly denied this. As you looked around the room for Lu Han, a man with red hair approached you.
“Hello, madam. Would you care to have this dance with me?” the man asked sweetly.
You were a little disappointed that it wasn’t Lu Han, but you obliged anyway. One dance with a stranger couldn’t hurt and plus, he seemed pretty nice.
You danced to a couple of songs with the red-headed man, idly chatting with him as you both spun around the room. You were somewhat distracted, looking around as you tried to get a glimpse of your favorite party host. Once the current song came to an end, you excused yourself, mentioning that you needed to use the restroom.
You left the noisy ballroom and headed down a dimly lit hallway. You had never needed to use the bathroom at Lu Han’s home, considering that you were invited to other parties at different locations. You knew it was stupid not asking for directions to the bathroom, but you were slightly curious about the castle in which Lu Han lived in.
As you wandered along the spacious corridors, you noticed this part of the castle was much older compared to where the party was being held. It also felt much chiller in the area, causing goosebumps to appear on your exposed arms. Moving further into the castle, you noticed that the end of the corridor was much darker and you could barely make out anything. The only thing that caught your eye was the sliver of light that shone through the crack of a slightly ajar door. Hearing a bit of commotion coming from that direction, you cheered quietly knowing that you had been successful in finding a bathroom in such a large building.
Walking closer to the door, your steps began to falter from the strange string of sounds emanating from the room. It wasn’t the familiar sounds of bathroom gossip, flushing toilets, and running water. These sounds were more provocative and sinful, causing your face to grow warm.
Maybe you were just hearing things? Or maybe someone was here in the castle watching television? Still, it didn’t explain why they weren’t at the party. From what you knew, no one but Lu Han lived here.
Curiosity gripped your being and you forced yourself to move in order to investigate the odd noises. After what felt like a century, you found yourself at the door. Your heart began to race as anxiety replaced your curiosity. Quietly, you peered through the small crack of the door and almost bit down on your lip to silence yourself from what your eyes beheld.
You saw several people within the room as loud moans came from those who were tangled up in rather compromising positions. Desire permeated the room as women and men kissed, touched, and fucked one another in a lust-drunken orgy. Although the amount of sex that took place was filthier than anything you had witnessed, it was the amount of blood that covered the participants that left you coated in cold sweat.
The smell was repugnant, fresh and drying blood coated the walls, the bed, the floors, and the people who seemed unbothered as they vocalized their pleasure. Had they just killed someone and decided to fuck each other silly in the copious amount of blood from their victim? There had to be a dead body in that room. That was the only explanation for this horror show, but the small puncture wounds on the necks of some of the lusty participants had you questioning your sanity.
Trails of scarlet trickled down from the small wounds as people in the room abandoned all inhibition with their lovers. You couldn’t control the rapid flicker of your eyes as it darted from one shocking thing to the next in that disgusting room. Your eyes only stilled when it landed on someone familiar.
Long hair bounced against a woman’s back as she rode a man beneath her vigorously on the bed. Others laid sprawled out around her, seemingly tired from blood loss or possibly from having their turn with the energetic woman. Broken moans fell past her lips as the man below gripped her waist tightly and thrusted into her sharply. Finally reaching her peak, she tilted her head back as an inhuman growl echoed from her throat. Baring a pair of razor sharp canines, she lowered her head and plunged her fangs into her lover’s neck. A deep groan left the man’s mouth as he slapped her ass sharply.
“God Gina, you really know how to fuck someone,” praised the man who turned out to be Renaldo.
“And I’ll continue doing so until I break you,” Gina purred as she licked the blood that began to dripped down the side of her lip.
Having seen enough of the nauseating event that took place, you were about to leave until you heard a familiar voice.
“Off dancing with other people? I’m hurt,” came Lu Han’s joking tone, unaware of what you saw.
You screamed loudly, frightened by how close Lu Han was to you as well as by what you had witnessed. It grew even louder when you also noticed the unnatural glow of his eyes in the dark hallway.
Alarmed by your behavior, Lu Han took a step back so as not to make you uncomfortable. Concern settled on his face as his eyes roamed over you to make sure you were alright. Wanting to comfort you, he reached out to you, but you stepped further away from him.
“Y/N, what wrong?” Lu Han asked as he tried to remain calm.
“Stay the hell away from me!” you yelled, your fear appearing as utter rage.
Before Lu Han could say anything, the door to the room opened and several people looked out to see the commotion that had ruined their private orgy. Pushing some people aside, Gina came out angrily in a bloody robe as Renaldo followed close behind. Apparently, he couldn’t be bothered to cover himself up.
Gina’s glowing eyes widened when she realized that you were the one who had screamed. An unsettling feeling cramped her belly, fearing that you had possibly seen the raunchy activities that she had often indulged in.
“Y/N?” Gina called out gently, not wanting to upset you further.
“Don’t…” you began as you looked at her sharply. “I don’t know what you people are, but don’t talk to me again. The both of you.”
“But…” Lu Han started, wanting to clear up the situation, although he knew that the damage had been done.
You didn’t even let him speak as you ran past him. Lu Han and Gina called out to you in a desperate attempt to stop you, but you ignored them. You ran as fast as you could in your heels and exited the castle, despite getting odd looks from some of the party-goers. As soon as you felt that you were at a safe distance from the castle, you pulled out your phone from your clutch purse and called a cab. Growing nervous, you prayed that one would arrive before Lu Han and Gina came looking for you.
You were done with everything. You were done with the partying and with both Lu Han and Gina. All you wanted to do was just make friends and have fun. You didn’t leave your home just to come here and have everything go to shit because your “friend” liked to take part in bloody orgies or maybe even murders. Even worse, the host allowed that to go on in his own home.
Back at the mansion, Lu Han and Gina tried to figure out how to clean up the mess that they had made of their friendship with you.
“You shouldn’t have let her go, Lu Han,” Gina said angrily, not at the fact that he had let you leave, but because she might have destroyed a bond with someone that she had cared about.
“And what? Hold her hostage?” Lu Han bit back, failing miserably at keeping his demeanor calm. “You shouldn’t have used that room for your activities. That’s what the upper floors are used for.”
“She might go to the police and tell them what she saw,” Gina countered. “She probably thinks we killed someone, especially with the way that room looked.”
“She won’t,” Lu Han replied, mostly trying to convince himself that you wouldn’t do such a thing. “And if she did, do you think anyone would believe her? They’d probably think she had a little too much to drink tonight.”
“Still, as much as we care for her, we can’t have her roaming around with a secret like this,” Gina spat out nervously. “Hell, only a small amount of people in this castle know what we are.”
“Fine. I’ll talk to her,” Lu Han convinced, not liking where the conversation was going. “But killing her or turning her is out of the question.”
“Jesus, Lu Han. Kill her?” Gina asked incredulously. “The most I would do, is probably turn her, but I’m not a freaking monster nor I would insinuate anything regarding killing her. I would never hurt her.”
“Good, because we can’t have shit going down like we did in the past,” came Lu Han’s cryptic tone as he recalled many memories of violence.  “And she doesn’t deserve to suffer like that.”
“You really like her, don’t you?” Gina asked quietly, watching as Lu Han balled his fists in frustration.
Lu Han sighed heartbrokenly and nodded, causing a small smile to appear on Gina’s lips. He did have feelings for you and because of that, he was determined to make things right with you.
~~~~~~
You sat alone at a table in the small café near your apartment as you waited for your order. It had been three weeks since you had last been at the castle. You had trouble sleeping, the images of what took place had invaded your dreams and turned them into complete nightmares. You were no longer dreaming about dancing with Lu Han, but instead of monsters that torn you to shreds with their teeth and splattered your blood on the walls of your bedroom. It didn’t help that Lu Han was still sending invitations which seemed more like handwritten apologies as he begged to speak with you.
Work was also terrible. You could no longer enjoy your dream job since you still had to work in the same office with Gina. Although Gina had respected your wishes to keep her distance, you still tried to avoid her as best as you could. You didn’t dare look in her direction, afraid of seeing those glowing red eyes that haunted you every day. You never saw the expression of loneliness that was written on her face, but you always caught the bouts of anger she displayed towards the other workers in the office.
The waitress brought over your coffee and you mumbled your thanks. As you drank the hot liquid, you ignored the bell that rang as the door opened. Too agitated to worry about other people, you barely registered the person who had entered the shop and was making their way over to you.
“Is this seat taken?”
Your blood ran cold at the sound of the gentle, but familiar voice. You swallowed hard before looking up to see blood red eyes staring back at you, carefully gauging your reaction. Without a word, you stood up quickly, grabbed your bag, and walked past Lu Han without giving him so much as a glance. You ignored the cashier at the register who tried to tell you that you hadn’t paid for your coffee.
Exiting the shop, you began to make your way down the sidewalk hurriedly. Before you could get any farther, you felt a warm hand grab your arm. You began panicking when you turned around and saw Lu Han holding you. You wanted to scream, but you didn’t want to cause a scene in the middle of the busy sidewalk although people were glancing at the two of you. They probably thought the two of you were having a lovers’ quarrel.
“Please don’t go, Y/N,” Lu Han pleaded with you. “I’ve been looking all over for you. Let me just explain myself.”
“Are you stalking me now? There’s nothing you can say that will make this better,” you argued, not wanting to hear him out. “Let me go.”
“No, I won’t,” Lu Han responded firmly. “Not until you let me explain what happened. If you decide you don’t want to be around the two of us, then we won’t bother you anymore.”
You studied his face for a moment with a bit of uncertainty. You weren’t convinced he’d stop bothering you, considering the fact the he ignored your request to leave you alone. Plus, the two of you were in public, so he wouldn’t dare try anything.
“Fine,” you answered begrudgingly as you snatched your arm out of his grip, “but if you try anything, I swear I will contact the police.”
Lu Han let out a shaky breath, grateful that you were finally giving him the opportunity to speak. The two of you headed back to the somewhat empty café and entered the building. Before going to your original spot, you went to apologize to the cashier for running out. When you were about to pay for your unfinished coffee, Lu Han took out a few bills and paid for you. You wanted to yell at him, but you kept your mouth shut.
Finally, the two of you sat down at the table and there was a couple of seconds of silence between you both. Getting tired of waiting for him to explain himself, you were the first to talk.
“Is that something you and Gina normally engage in?” you asked, somewhat disgusted.
Lu Han’s eyes widened, not expecting you to ask him that. He was expecting a question along the lines of “What are you?”
“That’s more of Gina’s kind of fun. I’m pretty monogamous,” Lu Han explained.
“And the blood? How exactly do you explain that?”
“Um, about that. There’s really no good explanation for that,” Lu Han admittedly sheepishly, “but I promise you we didn’t kill anyone. A lot of it was actually animal blood.”
“That’s really weird, you know that right?” you asked him, thinking he was a complete psychopath at this point. “Why even do that?”
“Let me put it this way. As vampires, we like to indulge ourselves in pleasurable things. One of those things is blood, for obvious reasons.”
“Are you serious?” you asked a little too loudly causing Lu Han to shush you. You rolled your eyes, but lowered your voice. “Vampires? I don’t believe you.”
“Well how else do you explain the puncture marks in those people’s necks? Or even our eyes?” Lu Han replied defensively.
“Make up and contacts, genius,” you responded, causing Lu Han to huff loudly.
“You’re so unbelievable, Y/N. I’m trying to explain this to you and all you do is just brush me off.”
“You’re calling me unbelievable? You’re the one calling yourself a vampire and having bloody orgies in your damn home.”
The both of you looked at each other heatedly, not knowing what to say next. The whole situation was ridiculous and hard to believe, but you knew deep down that Lu Han was telling you the truth. It bothered you to no end.
“Why do you allow that to go on in your home?” you asked much quieter, hating how loud your voice sounded in such silence.
“I’m a person that aims to please himself and others. If my guests and customers want to indulge in something pleasurable such as orgies, I will allow it. If they want a night of drunken revelry, I will provide them with wine. If they want to get away from their troubles, I’ll create a place in which they can forget them. Everyone has something that makes them happy.”
“So what do you want Lu Han?” you asked the vampire before you. “What makes you happy?”
“You,” Lu Han answered confidently as he took in your surprised expression.
The feelings of butterfly wings tickled the inside of your stomach as his confession repeated over and over in your head. You had missed the sensation of warmth that his words always seemed to give you. Why the hell are you acting like a little girl? You supposed to be pissed at him.
“Yeah right,” you replied, causing Lu Han to shake his head.
He could read you clear as day. He knew that you liked him just as much as he liked you. He wasn’t about to give up just because you were being stubborn.
“Fine. Let me prove it.”
“How exactly?”
“Let me date you.”
“Wait, what?” you sputtered, causing Lu Han to smirk.
“Are you afraid to date a vampire?” Lu Han teased, causing you to frown.
“No! That’s not it!” you countered although your flushed appearance gave you away.
“So it is true,” Lu Han chuckled. “My Belle is afraid to date the big bad Beast.”
“Oh my God, just shut up!” you whined as covered your face to hide your embarrassment.
“Alright, I’ll stop teasing,” Lu Han said as he stood up, causing you to look at him in confusion.
“Where are you going?” you asked.
“Home, but don’t worry,” Lu Han grinned mischievously. “I’ll be picking you up this Friday at 7.”
Later that week, you found yourself waiting for Lu Han to pick you up for your first date. You had no idea where he was planning to take you. You were a bit nervous, wondering both if you dressed up for the right occasion or if you would wind up dead in some random ditch. I mean, you were going out with a “so-called vampire.” Either way, you knew you couldn’t back out of this date.
Since you were forced to give Lu Han another chance, you’d figured out that maybe you should try to patch up things with Gina. Oddly, despite everything that had happened, you missed her a bit. Still, you weren’t sure how you were going to get over the fact that bloody orgies were one of her guilty pleasures.
How did your life come to this point?
The doorbell rang, signaling that someone was at your apartment door. Taking in a deep breath, you prepared yourself for the night ahead. After you grabbed your purse, you made your way towards the door and opened it.
Lu Han stood there with a small grin on his face until his eyes landed on you. His eyes raked appreciatively over the dress that hugged your body, causing you to grow warm.
“Eyes up here, Lu Han,” you scolded lightly, although you were happy that you had made such an impression.
“Ah, so sorry,” Lu Han apologized with a blush on his face. “You’re just so pretty.”
“Um, thanks,” you responded as a small smile formed on your face. “So, are we ready to go?”
“Yes, but before we do that, I brought these for you.”
Pulling his hands from behind his back, Lu Han presented you with a bouquet of Peruvian lilies.
“I hope you don’t think it’s too cheesy…” Lu Han trailed off, feeling somewhat shy.
“No, I really like them!” you reassured him. “Thank you, Lu Han. Let me just put them a vase of water and then we can head out.”
A few minutes later, both you and Lu Han were in his car as he took you to an unknown destination. You wanted to ask where the two of you were going, but you figured that he wanted to surprise you. Several minutes later, the car pulled up in front of a small estate. You furrowed your eyebrows, wondering where had brought you.
“Where are we?”
“We’re at a small estate that I own,” Lu Han replied.
“Damn, how many homes do you own?” you gasped. Lu Han chuckled at your question.
“A couple.”
Stepping out of the vehicle, Lu Han came around to your side to open the car door for you. After taking the hand that he offered, you stepped out of the car and let him lead you inside of the estate.
The place was cozy, nice for a weekend getaway with friends. As you walked through the estate with Lu Han, you noticed that he never let your hand go. You looked to where your hand was being held and couldn’t help how your heart seemed to flutter. His hand was so soft and wrapped perfectly around yours.
You felt the cool night air against your skin and you shuddered slightly. When you looked up to see where he had taken you, you gasped unexpectedly.
The two of you stood in a spacious backyard. Large floral bushes enclosed the backyard, shielding you both from the world outside. There was small fire pit with a circular couch surrounding it. Colorful pillows and blankets decorated the couch as a bottle of expensive wine, a wine glass, candies, and popcorn sat on top of the fire pit. In front was a large television screen that placed on top of a stone foundation. To top it all off, white lantern lights hung above your heads, casting a dim glow throughout the yard.
“Wow. Did you really plan all of this?” you asked Lu Han as you took in the scenery.
“I did,” Lu Han chuckled as he brought you over to the couch. “Is this okay with you? I don’t want you to be uncomfortable.”
“No, this is fine,” you reassured him as you gave him a bright smile. “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me. I just want you to enjoy yourself.”
The two of you settled in as Lu Han poured out some wine for you to enjoy during the movie. After deciding on a movie to watch, you both grabbed a blanket and watched as the movie began to play. It was a silly little movie, leaving you both giggling at some parts. As the both of you became more engrossed in the movie, you barely realized that the two of you had moved closer to one another.
As time went by, you grew a little thirsty. You absentmindedly reached towards the fire pit to pick up your glass of wine, not noticing how close you had placed it towards the edge. You realized too late when you heard the shattering of glass against the paved concrete.
“Oh my God! I’m so sorry!” you panicked slightly, feeling terrible for destroying his things. Bending over, you quickly began to pick up the shards before Lu Han could say anything.
“It’s okay, just leave it-” Lu Han began before he was interrupted by a small yelp.
Looking down at your index finger, you saw that it had a small gash that began to bleed. You were about to get up so that you could find a bathroom to rinse your finger off, but you were stopped by Lu Han grabbing your wrist. Without any warning, he placed the bleeding finger into his mouth.
You stopped breathing as soon as you felt his warm tongue sliding against your injured digit. A low groan rumbled in his chest as he closed his eyes, savoring the taste of your blood. Your eyes stayed on his mouth, briefly wondering what it would feel like on other parts of your body.
Lu Han’s eyelids fluttered open as he stared at you with hazy scarlet eyes. You heart began thumping rapidly in your chest as you burned from his heated gaze. Never had a man looked at you in that manner. Slowly, Lu Han slid your finger out of his mouth, licking his lips as you caught sight of sharp fangs.
There was a moment of silence between the two of you, the buzzing of the movie the only sound in the yard. It was as if you were both daring each other to make the next move. Although you believed Lu Han’s actions were purely out of bloodlust, he had ignited something deep between you both. A craving that you wanted satisfied since you first met.
And tonight, it would be fulfilled.
Before you could react, Lu Han swiftly pulled you towards him, crashing his delectable lips against your own. You let out a pleasantly surprised moan as you wrapped your arms around his neck. Greedy hands grabbed your waist, giving you an appreciative squeeze for how responsive you were. Wanting to feel more of you, Lu Han hoisted you effortlessly above his lap, making you straddle him on the soft couch.
Your hands ran down Lu Han’s chest, feeling the body that laid beneath his thin sweater. Gripping your hips tightly, Lu Han grinded his erection against your clothed center, causing you to gasp loudly and break the ardent kiss.
“Mmm…make that sound for me again,” Lu Han purred, repeating the erotic motion. You cried out louder, gyrating your hips in sync with his.
“Don’t tease me, Lu Han,” you whined.
Peppering your neck with feathered kisses, Lu Han moved his hands down to your thighs. Playing with the edges of your hitched dress, he chuckled when you wiggled on top of him.
“Tell me what you want, sweetheart,” Lu Han mumbled as he began to leave dark marks on your sensitive skin.
“I want you…” you blushed, not wanting to give an explanation of the sinful things you wanted him to do to you. Lu Han wasn’t having any of that.
Giving a sharp slap to your ass, you yelped causing Lu Han to smirk devilishly at you. You bit your bottom lip, annoyed that he wouldn’t get straight to the deed.
“You can do better than, Y/N,” Lu Han peered at you as he rubbed your sore cheek.
“Lu Han, you better fuck me especially after all the shit you put me-” you began before Lu Han cut you off.
“Stand.”
You looked at him questionably, worried that you had upset him. Not wanting to cause a problem, you got off Lu Han’s lap and stood between his spread legs. The next thing your heard was the sound of your panties being torn to shreds by Lu Han’s hands. You were stunned by his actions, but it didn’t stop you from getting wetter.
“Much better,” Lu Han responded before pulling you back on his lap, “but we’re not quite finished.”
He continued his small rampage on your clothing, ripping your dress’s straps and tearing your flimsy bra into pieces with such swiftness. He admired how vulnerable you looked, loving the way your breasts moved from your heavy breathing and how your nipples hardened against the cool night air. Cupping your left breast gently before giving a small squeeze, he dug his fangs into his bottom lip at the way your heart raced for him. Your blood just had to be delicious with all that adrenaline coursing through your veins.
Placing his other hand between your legs, you moaned when he dragged his digits along your soaking slit. His red eyes stayed focused on your face, enjoying as pleasure washed over your entire being. You dug your nails into his shoulders, gasping as he slid two of his fingers into your heat.
“Remember how you asked me what makes me happy?” Lu Han asked as his fingers pumped into you languidly. “As well as what I wanted?”
“Y-yes,” you stuttered. Your mind was in no shape to answer any questions.
“Add pleasuring you to the list of things that makes me happy,” Lu Han replied, rubbing your clit rapidly with his thumb, “because I want to do this to you every night.”
You felt your walls spasm uncontrollably around his fingers as you reached closer to your peak. You bucked messily against his hand, no longer moving in tandem with his pumps. Just a little bit more and he would have you screaming his name for dear life into the night air.
Pulling his fingers from your wetness, you wanted to cry in utter frustration at his merciless teasing. You narrowed your eyes at him as he dragged his tongue along his glistening fingers. He watched you wickedly, reveling from both your anger and sweet taste.
“Everything about you is delicious,” Lu Han mentioned as he cleaned up his fingers with his pink tongue. “Just like I thought the first time I saw you.”
“Lu Han…” you whined, on the verge of tears. “I really need you.”
“Don’t worry, Y/N,” Lu Han cooed as he gave you a gentle kiss. “You’ll have me now.”
Moving slightly to give Lu Han some room, he began to unbutton his pants before pulling down the zipper. He wore nothing beneath, easily pulling out his hardened length from its uncomfortable confines. Adjusting yourself on his lap, you braced yourself as you felt him line himself under your aching heat.
Carefully, he pushed himself in, groaning as your walls welcomed him in a tight embrace. He captured your lips once more as he gave you a moment to adjust to the new sensation. Craving more, you bucked your hips into his before gyrating slowing against him.
Lu Han wrapped his arms around your moving body as you rocked languidly against him. He couldn’t believe you still wanted him, considering all that you had witnessed and had now known. He loved how your head fell back from the pleasure you were experiencing. He was amazed by the way your skin heated up from his touches and by how your body took him so well. Even more pleasing, he enjoyed watching the way your body moved as you got off to riding his cock, using him to achieve your release. Moving his hands to grab your ass firmly, he wanted to take control.
Nibbling on your lips and sliding his tongue into your mouth, Lu Han began pounding into your soaking heat. You held onto his shoulders, moaning loudly against his mouth as his thrusts became merciless. You felt him smirking against your lips, clearly pleased with the noises that escaped your lips.
Speeding up, Lu Han started thrusting into you at an inhuman speed, causing you to briefly wonder if he would break you in half. You had no choice but to hold on tightly to him as he fucked you senseless. Animalistic growls poured from his mouth as he pulled away from your lips to stare at you. You couldn’t break the gaze that he held you in, the small amount of fear that gripped your heart increased the euphoria that you felt from him stroking your walls harshly.
The agonizing sensation of Lu Han’s fangs piercing your neck and the mind-numbing orgasm that ripped through your body was indescribable. You didn’t realize you had screamed your ending to the stars as tears leaked from the corners of your eyes. Your sore walls massaged his cock roughly, causing him to coat your insides with his desire as he snarled against your broken skin.
You slumped over Lu Han’s shoulders, trying to remember how to breathe again. You felt exhausted and light-headed. You weren’t even sure if any of your limbs worked anymore or if you still knew how to form words. The only thing you seemed to register was Lu Han’s tongue gently caressing the bleeding wounds on your neck.
“I’m sorry I hurt you,” Lu Han said as soon as the bleeding had slowed. “I got carried away.”
Forcing yourself to sit up, you pecked his lips softly, causing him to stroke your cheek.
“It’s alright. It was a rather interesting feeling. You know…combined with my…well you know what I mean,” you admitted sheepishly.
Lu Han gave you a fanged smile, satisfied with how his relationship had progressed with you. You made him happier than any party he had thrown.
“Thank you for giving me another chance,” Lu Han spoke, “and not just seeing me as a monster.”
“I should be thanking you, Lu Han,” you replied as you held both of his hands in your own. “You didn’t give up on me even when I rejected you that night at the castle. I was just so scared.”
“I want to make this thing work between us,” Lu Han said with a small blush on his face. “I really care about you and I want us to continue building this relationship.”
“I feel the same way, Lu Han,” you smiled as you planted a kiss on both of his hands. “Let’s start over.”
When you had looked towards the future, you only saw yourself living in London, doing what you loved the most. Going out and having fun with friends was also an expected part of your future, but it was the unforeseeable parts that had truly flipped your life upside. Meeting Lu Han and Gina was a pleasant surprise, filling your life with such fun that you had never known existed. Although it had frightened you to learn that the two of them were vampires, Lu Han convinced you to live your life more freely without judging others. Therefore, you accepted that it was good to embrace others, despite what secrets they might have.

‘One minute to go’ the starter announces. Breathe. Just breathe. ‘Thirty seconds’. I stare down the churning river. Focus. ’10 seconds’. Our paddles raise and poise. They must not touch the water until…’Go!’ Adrenaline surges, hearts pump, muscles strain. Six people, one raft – we swore we came here just for fun but now the competition is on!
How did I end up raft racing in Romania?
If you’d told me a year ago this is where I would be I would have laughed. Since starting work at British Canoeing in 2015 I had done a fair bit of paddling but white water always seemed well beyond my reach. There was always a desire though. I had asked a colleague previously ‘how would I get on the white water course?’ ‘We could find you a way if you like’ he replied.
In the end I found my own way there. With the help of some pretty awesome people. ‘You should try rafting’, another colleague told me. ‘There are starter sessions on a Wednesday night. It’s great fun.’ And so, the next Wednesday I found myself getting slammed in the face with freezing water for the first time…and really quite liking it. Fast forward six months and I’m on the start line of my first race in Romania. A new sport and a new country all in one!
What is white water raft racing?
Lots of us have had a fun time with our mates on the commercial rafting experiences you can purchase in the UK and abroad. I had a great afternoon a few years ago with my best friend and have a lot of pictures to prove it! But raft racing is a little different. Racing in teams of four or six, everyone in the boat has a role to play in ensuring that obstacles are avoided, slalom gates are negotiated, speed and timing is maintained and that sticky situations are got out of without anyone taking a swim!
Over the course of a weekend teams take part in four races; sprint, slalom, head to head and downriver. Each race holds a certain number of points, which add up to your overall score:
Sprint – exactly what it says; get down a section of river as fast as you can.
Slalom – just as in canoeing; negotiate a number of sets of upward and downward slalom poles.
Head to head – (the really exciting one!) set off at the same time as another team and it’s the first to the finish…but…there are obstacles to negotiate along the way.
Downriver – endurance. A longer course which tests you when you’re tired.
That’s the boring explanation stuff out of the way…
I’ve never raced like this before. I’m used to start line nerves at the beginning of a running race, but this is different. There’s an audience, a crowd. Not only the other teams but locals from the town have turned out in force too. Clutching cardboard cut out paddles they ask us to pose for photos and sign autographs. The music is pumping and the atmosphere fantastic.
My teammates; Beth, Steph*, Kellie, Debs and SJ have a mix of experience. We are positioned in the boat depending on our strengths. My strength is power: vocal and body – I am middle right. Kellie, positioned in front of me, looks sick with nerves. We get into a routine before each race – she punches me in my buoyancy aid, I punch her in hers. We have to do it…for luck.
We’ve had some practice runs on the river the day before racing. Learning where the bigger rocks are. Where there are hidden obstacles. The best line to take. What we will do if it all goes wrong. We are ready.
*This is the same crazy Steph I attempted to run across Iceland with.
We race!
The sprint race is up first. And it goes well. That’s all I can tell you – I don’t remember much more. It felt smooth, we were happy and my legs were shaking at the end! We wait, watching for movement from the officials tent. Someone emerges and pins paper to board; we rush to look. We won sprint! Wow, just wow. I am amazed. But was this just a fluke? Did we get lucky.
We still have a long day ahead. Head to Head is up next and then slalom. Downriver is tomorrow. The day is roasting hot and there is little relief form the sun. As we watch others race we struggle to find shade. Our kit is hot and heavy and I drink constantly to stay hydrated.
The head to head is truly exhilarating. ‘Don’t worry about where the other boat is’ I scream, ‘let’s just focus on what we’re doing.’ I don’t really need to tell my teammates this. They’re so cool and awesome. We win our first race and just…just…just win our second too. I am pumped!
Here is a video of that second race…
Could we win this?
Coming to Romania we had declared that we were here for the raft racing experience. Winning wasn’t discussed. But now…now we’re sitting in first place. However, slalom and downriver hold more points. It could all change so quickly.
And it does. We do well at slalom. Our first run is the fast but another team are faster on their second run. This puts us second in slalom and therefore drops us into silver medal position overnight.
For now though, it’s time to for the race party. I briefly question the wisdom of multiple carafes of very reasonably priced wine the night before our final race. But my doubts are quickly forgotten as we head to the dance floor.
lost to partying. Strong coffee is chucked down throats as we head to the river for our deciding race.

Downriver
Boats are set off in groups for this race. We’re in a group with the Bulgarian ladies, who are in pole position and a few of the men’s teams. We have seven kilometers of rocky, white water river to negotiate, culminating in a final drop named ‘the washing machine’. If you go into that bit wrong – well the name says it all!
We start strongly but yesterday has fatigued us. The Bulgarian ladies are stronger
and beat us to the finish line. Most importantly for us though – we take the right line on the washing machine and all finish in the boat!
Are we silver raft racing medalists?
Transported back to our hotel, we now have to wait for the other teams to race. We can’t win gold now but will we hold on to silver? The wait seems to go on forever but finally race times are posted. Some swift mental maths, we check and recheck…but it finally sinks in…we’ve done it! My first raft racing competition and we are coming away with silver medals. I am elated!
To add to the joy our men’s team have scooped bronze in their category, against some tough competition.
I decide the best way to celebrate is to drag Steph up a big nearby hill. It had been starting at me for three days and just wanted to be climbed before we left. There was swearing from Steph.

A little extra drama
We were now parting from SJ and the men’s team, while five of us went on to do a few days of touristing in Brasov and Bucharest. We grab a life to Brasov, along winding mountain roads. The scenery is stunning; snow capped mountains, rural villages and storks nesting on every other telegraph post. Spirits are high adn we can’t wait to celebrate in Brasov.
We’re staying in the Evil Clown Hostel; yep, it was as odd as it sounds but perfectly nice. I’m feeling sick. Really sick. Steph helpfully suggests I go for a ‘tactical chunder’ in the hope I will then feel better. Fair enough. I head to the toilets. Throw up. Pass out. Wake up wedged down the side of the toilet with, what appears to be a broken nose. Whoops.
Kellie’s face as I stagger back into the room says it all. Beth makes swift phone calls. One of the Romanian raft racing team is quickly on his way to transport me to hospital. Steph is coming with me too but first takes some pics to send to the rest of the group. Who doesn’t love a good injury picture?
The hospital and beyond
It’s March 31st 2019. We were due to leave the EU two days ago but we didn’t. I’ll never know if this would have made a difference to my treatment but on production of my EHIC card and holiday insurance I was treated promptly and for free.
I was super impressed with the Romanian hospital. In around 2.5 hours I was given an ECG, CAT scan, two bags of IV fluids, some anti sickness medication and discharged. I also slept…a lot…even in the CAT scanner. It seems I was dehydrated and had heat stroke. There was no evidence that the party had anything to do with my condition; so I’m sticking with heat stroke!
The Dr. kindly told me I had raised enzyme levels which indicated I had worked physically hard; something I proudly told my teammates. She also mentioned I was bradycardic and I quote ‘something often seen in athletes’. Boom!!!
I was soon back at the hostel, clutching a CD of my CAT scan and feeling extremely grateful to the wonderful Mihai for being my Romanian savior.
My nose had miraculously popped back into place and was only making the gentlest of crunching sounds. My nausea had also receded. So, it was time to get on with the touristing!
Fancy a go at raft racing?
I would never have dreamed I’d be raft racing down a river in Romania. If I can do it you can too! It’s a fantastic and fun team sport and a good work out. I paddle with Notts Raft Racing and if you’re in the Midlands you can too! Check out their Facebook page for how to get started.
If you’re in a different part of the country get in touch with British Rafting on their Facebook page to discover where you can get started. Or, if you’d like to find out more about competition and where you can watch it pop to the International Rafting Federation website here.
I can’t wait to see you on the water!

How to Start a Business While You’re Still a Student
As a student you might have an idea for a great business. But what, if anything, should you do about it?
Certainly, there are many amazing types of businesses to start. What’s more, working for yourself has heaps of awesome advantages. One of these is flexibility and being your own boss. No longer will you have to report to someone who doesn’t have the same vision you have.
Starting a new business can be a bit scary for student entrepreneurs, though. That’s because in the real world, we’ve all heard about those businesses that were started with much enthusiasm but failed in their first year.
How Will You Earn Money While You Build Your Business Up?
Also, while your business is building up, you have to think about how you’ll be earning money for your living expenses. That’s because while you’re building up your client base, you might not be making much money.
Therefore, write up your business plans. Doing so will get you to think about your vision for the company you want to start. In other words, what do you want to achieve with your business?
RELATED ARTICLE: ONLINE DEGREES THAT WILL ENHANCE YOUR SKILLS AS A BUDDING ENTREPRENEUR
Your written business plan doesn’t have to be complicated. However, it will need to answer a few questions. For example:
Who will your customers be?
What problems do your potential customers have that your products or services will solve?
How much money are you likely to make each month and in the next year, or in the next five years?
Market Research Is Imperative
Decide whether you’ll have a land-based business or an online business. Further, decide whether you intend to work from home or if you’ll rent office or warehouse space elsewhere. Compare costs for your possible options.
New business owners sometimes price their products lower than they should. This can lead to a host of problems. You can avoid this entire quandary by doing some market research before you begin. Doing this research will help you to work out your pricing. Additionally, it will help you to assess whether, in fact, your business idea will make money in the long term.
Moreover, look to the future and do a cost analysis that includes the possibility that eventually you’ll be spending some of your business earnings on salaries. This will force you to ask such questions as, “Are five people really necessary when two people can do the job?”
Know the Difference Between Variable and Fixed Costs
Eventually you’ll need to break down your costs into variable and fixed costs. For example, expenses such as rent, electricity, business insurance, and salaries are fixed costs. These are costs you have to pay every month. On the other hand, fuel and stationery are costs that you might have some flexibility with.
All of this analysis will give you a good idea of how much capital you’re going to need to launch your business. This can help you to understand whether you’ll need to apply for bank loans or other kinds of funding.
Keep Your Day Job for Now
One tip that can stand a student in good stead is to start up your business on the side while continuing in your current job. You’ll only need to do this while you get things up and running and establish some clients.
By holding onto your job awhile longer, you will spare yourself some serious stress. You’ll also give yourself the opportunity to start putting some of your business ideas into action. And even with all the teething problems that come with starting a new business, you’ll still be able to cover your monthly bills.

Save a Bit Before You Take the Leap
As a student, perhaps you have a side job such as being a waiter, working in a grocery store on the weekends, or looking after people’s pets when they’re away. Therefore, before you take the final leap into your new business, be sure to save some money. Your nest egg can help you to ride out those lean months that every new business experiences.
Starting a new business and being an entrepreneur is not for sissies. It’s a risk you’re taking, albeit an exciting one. It’s true that mixing student responsibilities with a new business is daunting. Moreover, completing all your assignments on time will be time-consuming. However, you needn’t despair.
Instead, take a look at RapidEssay. This is a writing service that will ensure you get all the help you need with composing and reviewing your assignments. This can free up your time so that you can concentrate on getting your business dream up and running.
Start Your Business Now While You’re Still a Student
So don’t succumb to the belief that because you’re a student you don’t have time to make your dreams come true. After all, you’re young enough and adventurous enough to turn your ideas into a full-time reality.

Lots of new Paleo Paint products in the lineup for Wild Ozark 2019! Look for new handmade watercolors, new packaging (less plastic!) and more paintings.
Since I started making the paint in June of last year, I’ve experimented a lot. And I’ve learned a lot. The same goes for the paintings using handmade watercolors.
As I’ve never painted with anything except these paints I make, I have little to draw on from experience compared with store-bought versions.
However, in my work-play, I’ve come up with a few more techniques for using and making the paint. And I’ve found some better ways to package the paints and make them easier or more fun to use.
Plastic Reduction
The usual thing nowadays used to hold paint are little plastic pans. I’ve gone through literally hundreds of pans since I started making paint. When it’s paint for myself, I wash and reuse them. As I’m developing new products for the upcoming year, I’d prefer to use less plastic.
Originally, artists used whatever was handy to their region. Those who lived near bodies of water typically used seashells. If they purchased paint, it came in seashells, I’d assume. However most of the artists of old made their own paint.
While I don’t have seashells handy, I do have acorns with convenient little caps. And we have a lot of wood scraps when Rob is in the workshop making his art. Nature abounds with all sorts of ‘holders’, so I’ll keep my eyes open for other natural items that will work.
Paint delivery with no or little plastics.
For the acorn cup holders, I still need to use the hot glue to attach them to the base. So not completely plastic-free, but much closer.
New Products in 2019
More Colors
While my main focus for new products will remain on local colors, the Soul of the Ozark series, I would like to start experimenting with minerals from other places. Whenever I travel, I’ll collect the soil, rocks, or clay of that place and make collections called “Soul of That Place”.
I’ve learned to make an incredible blue out of lapis lazuli, but that rock is expensive and in short supply here in my possession, so it most likely won’t ever be one of my new products to sell. However, there are other rocks native to the United States that will make blue. Same goes for green. So these won’t be included in a Soul collection unless it is native to the region I’ve collected, but I’d like to have those colors on hand.
Another thing I learned to do, and now consider standard practice when I have a large enough source, is to refine the colors. The whole rock gives a certain shade. But if you separate the fractions of the rock using water, other shades are possible. Some of the shades can be quite vivid, like this Russet from the fines of the rock I used originally to make my Nirvana color.
More Art
I’ve entered the only two originals I have left into a show for the Artists of Northwest Arkansas. Which means in order to enter any other shows, I’ll need more originals. Right now I’m working on a goshawk and hopefully it will turn out well enough to compete. Before I can finish the painting, though, I have to make the colors I need.
The next exhibit I’d like to apply to is at the Springfield Museum of Art. I need to have this goshawk done by February for that.
My little twisted tree swatches have been popular items at the market, so I will make more of those and add them to the new product line as they become available. They’re small and affordable for people who want to own original art rather than prints. And they look just as nice framed as any larger sized painting would.
Paleo Duos
Whimsical, yet practical. At the moment, I only have enough of the large acorn cups to make 4 sets. If these prove to be a popular way to deliver my handmade watercolors, I’ll find more of them!
Each acorn cup holds more paint than a standard full pan. If all I can find are smaller acorns, then I’ll add more cups and call them Trios or Quads.
The bones of what will become Paleo Duo sets.
The first product to hit the market for 2019 are my new Paleo Duos. Quarter included for scale.
Comes in a box with large acorns nested in preserved moss.
These are large acorn caps. Burr oak and other oak acorns.
Wooden Palettes
These wooden blocks are awesome, and contain no plastics at all. When I finish the paints in one of mine, I’ll try washing and re-using it, too. My son Garrison has been working with me on this design. He’s doing all the work of making them and I’m filling them with paint and offering feedback. The one below is a working prototype.
Not one of the new products, but a new way to package the products. No plastic!
Paleo Go
This is a portable set based on the concept of ‘whiskey paintings’. It features small acorn cups with magnets so they can be swapped out for different colors. Will come with the first set of colors, a miniature paint brush, shot glass for water, and the wooden plaque. I have been using this prototype as often as I can so I can make modifications as needed. Once I have all the bugs worked out and beautify the presentation of it more, it’ll be one of the new products at the market too. Look for this mid- to late 2019. Maybe earlier if I’m lucky with the first round of modifications.

Where to Find Wild Ozark?
Look for me on Saturdays at the Fayetteville (indoor) Farmers Market until March. I won’t be there the first weekend in January, though. You can find out when and where I’ll be by checking my calendar here.
I’ll be at the Community Craft Show in Bentonville on February 9.
My Etsy shop is at Etsy.com/shop/wildozark and it’s open all the time!
Got Acorns?
If you have any burr oak acorn caps, I would be happy to buy some from you! Ditto the other large caps. I have lots of medium and small acorns, just need more of the large ones. Email me if you’d like to donate or sell to the cause: [email protected]
Have a wonderful, prosperous, and exciting 2019!
