A Speculative Analysis About Irkens No One Asked For: Part I
Tumblr media
Dem green fellas. Them lil guys, they’re an interesting pack of critters, aren’t they?
I used to really fixate on them back in middle and high school, stronger than everyone else seemed to be on the spazz in the dog costume. Jhonen Vasquez’s worldbuilding has always towed a very fine line between nonsensically ridiculous and surprisingly logistical, and this balance is typified in everything we know, and can infer, about these bug-eyed imperialists at the center of everything Invader Zim. So, let’s infer, and take a crack at it since no one’s stopping us anyway- More specifically, some thoughts and ponderings I had about how they “tick” as a fully realized society, not just a sci-fi monster..
A Homeworld Obscured
Now, to really understand the history and “deal” of any civilization, or any animal, usually you would turn to their environment first to give you some handy clues and context.
Small problem, though: We actually don’t get much in the way of direct, explicit showing or explanations about Irk itself when it comes to the show. This makes some sense, given that the whole of what they do worth showing (and the most notable members of their kind) exists almost entirely off-world. So instead, we mostly find out more about Irk from what Invader Zim does tell us about its natives. As far as confirmed canon goes, we know that Irk’s atmosphere appears red, its surface is entirely and densely urbanized, and it’s long been depicted in starmaps with a set of Saturn-like rings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This last fact is probably the most interesting, because planetary rings are usually something we, in our own little solar system, would only associate with massive, gaseous worlds, not terrestrial ones.  What These rings are made of is really anyone’s guess- could be ancient debris from natural satellites, Water-ice particles, maybe even some form of artificial defense network put into orbit by the Irkens themselves. If they aren’t artificially created, this would suggest that Irk has quite a strong gravitational field- greater than that of any of our neighborhood’s rocky planets. This is the common theory I personally like to subscribe to, because it would also go hand and hand with explaining why the average height of the irken race is so much shorter compared to that of an adult human. It fits neatly into the “why” question for the sort of athletic skill and agility we’ve seen invaders able to demonstrate on Earth, too, for otherwise being of meek physical prowess. It even adds some credible context for why the very achievement of growing to a more substaintial height is both uncommon and associated with extreme survival fitness to them.
A Fun fact that’s about to be relevant: “Rayleigh scattering” is the term given to when light wavelengths become shifted and scattered through an atmosphere medium. Long story short, it’s the reason our sky has color to it during the day. Stay with me on this.
I’ve also seen some people take a go at the red-looking surface, guessing a different gas makeup than the elements on earth responsible for our blue skies. I’m gonna go against the grain here, and actually contest that. I think that Irk’s atmosphere is coincidentally extremely similar to Earth’s. We know well enough that they both have a similar composition of gases breathable to both societies, given that Zim, Skoodge, and Tak all seemed pretty comfortable without some form of assistance on the same dirtball as humanity. Instead, I propose that Irk’s magenta skies are actually the symptom of heavy pollution. Sunsets and sunrises in the real world are known to make the sky appear more reddish-orange, even pink, as is. Usually, Rayleigh scattering has the light From the sun appear bluish in full midday, but during low sun, the rays are coming at an angle making them have to travel farther before reaching us, so you have already stretched light waves getting the same treatment from the air and, well, a higher frequency blue turns down to the lower end of the spectrum, red and yellows.
And wouldn’t you know, air pollution can actually do the same thing. THIS is why there's a scary ass orange haze known to accompany the presence of massive forest fires and volcanic eruptions. Earth’s most polluted cities even experience longer and redder sunsets for the same reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Image of a lilac sky over a Chinese city experiencing heavy smog levels Right: Intense red haze spotted over towns in Indonesia in the wake of rampant rainforest fires
On Earth, Zim stared directly into the midday sun without hesitation, nor concern that it would literally blind him. I think the planet hue and this is plenty enough to guess the likely case that Irk’s surface probably doesn’t get a lot of direct sun on an average day as is, and the sheer amount of unbroken cityscape that covers the homeworld would be the more obvious suspect than just having a more distant star from them. If they overcrowded to the point of their expansion, why build their civilization deeper into the ground, instead of up? Maybe there's actually a good reason or two they don’t raise their young topside.
A Psychology Molded for Domination
As well, I want to chirp about real world space again for a second. So, anyone up to the buzz in geek circles and aware of the math on the matter probably got the memo: humanity is almost matter-of-fact certainly not alone in this sandbox of a universe (or at the very least, we won’t always be alone). Like, about as certainly as we were about Black holes’ existence before we up and observed the real thing. And while it’s probably not going to happen in any of our lifetimes, sci-fi and media generally have been trying to take a crack for years at what the theoretical first contact with an alien civilization is going to look like.
Tumblr media
And I’m gonna go ahead and say it,
As “cliche” and Hollywood as the conquering little green/grey dudes trope might have become… it’s actually not a wild take after all. The little and green thing, that’s creative liberty, but the part about them being hostile and something we may not actually even WANT to be aware of our existence? That’s an idea that even the smarty pants experts have been fearing the realistic odds of, even including the late Stephen Hawking .
The Evolution of intelligent life is a hard thing to really pin down and predict, given that we literally only have the one example to study. Under the right conditions, what reason would another advanced species NOT have to be equally as expanding, as exploitative of its resources, self-destructively short-sighted, and as supremacist as humans have already demonstrated themselves to be capable of? There is a lot of very interesting literature that suggests BOTH empathy/altruism and or aggression/tribalism to be (at least in the short term) very rewarding characteristics for an intelligent social species to develop.
And that’s the thing about the behavior of the Irken Armada I think has always been fascinating. Their drive to be the biggest definitionally invasive species across the cosmos is framed exactly as irrational, bumbling, and pointless as it deserves to be; however, is it not just the extended conclusion of every empire that has existed here on Earth, if only it had survived long enough to achieve the technology of Irk? And yet, it’s reminiscent, like the rest of their design, to the far from sapient, yet very real world creatures they appear to be most inspired by: hive and colony building arthropods. Whether the next point I'm about to touch on should be seen as a rejection of that resemblance, or further elaboration of it is anyone's to answer.
Transhumanism, or.. Transirkenism, in this case?
Like the specifics of what Irk really looks like and how it realistically works, a bunch about the aliens’ physical biology is left to scattered tidbits to ponder and piece together into a bigger picture. A few of those tidbits are as follows, drip-fed to us over the course of aired and scripted but never released episodes:
+ From the mouth of Vasquez himself, it has been confirmed that Irkens lack any form of reproductive organs. Instead, they rely on industrialized facilities to grow and produce them in a factory sense.
+ Yet curiously, they still demonstrate something akin to sexual dimorphism, or at least the cultural existence of masculine/feminine genders, where females are aesthetically set apart by the presence of curled antennae, eyelashes, and higher voices.
+ Irken lifespans are able to stretch far past that of an average human’s (Zim himself is cited to be around 2 centuries old in earth years).
+ Invader class soldiers have been implanted with surgical upgrades to their eyes.
+ Every Irken is fitted with a PAK that serves a wide array of utility and life-sustaining functions for its owner. These units are physically and neurologically connected into an Irken’s spine from “birth” and contain a cybernetic backup of an individual’s personality, assigned occupational programming, and memories.
That’s not close to a complete list by any means, but it’s got the gist of what I want to dwell on most, starting with the last bit; because the PAK isn’t done true justice in one statement. It is not an extra addition the way a prosthetic enhancement is, and it is not a tool the way armor and weapons are. It is literally analogous to a vital organ to these aliens, and they are shown to die within 10 minutes of being forcefully detached from their own.
The degree to which Irken bodies and minds rely on this technology, and how seamlessly they are integrated into it, ALONG with their completely artificial life cycle all directly points to the fact that their civilization has advanced into a cyborg-like stage of evolution. It may even be on track to reach a post-organical peak in due time, phasing out more and more of their “vestigial” and feeble meatsuits until they’ve become a true drone army. And that actually begs some huge questions now that we realize we will never know how much of the Irken anatomy was ever originally a natural feature. An Irken’s own brain practically comes secondary to the superior efficiency of the supercomputer on their back, capable of literally holding their own essence and being in the form of code. A code that can preserve the “self” even in the event of meatbody failure, being uploaded post-mortem into the Control Brains’ collective data and repurposed for a future generation of workers. It absolutely would stand to reason that the species has continued this biological self-tampering to other heights- extending their lifespans, incorporating untold amount of mechanical upgrades into their bodies, and maybe even genetically engineering their smeets to be so compatible with this technology.  The control brains themselves are a mesmerizing reflection of this change over time- the result of an evident shift long ago from technology serving them, to them serving the directives of computers. When you really pay attention to the control brains’ role in the series, it comes clear to you who (or what) is really in charge of their society. The Tallest still maintain their symbolic/cultural importance to the Irkens, but outside of their part in spearheading the active intergalactic invasion, they ultimately are figureheads when it comes to actually running the homeworld and ruling the lives of Irk’s inhabitants. If I had to bet money, I would say the Brains may even have the ability to choose and predetermine the next Tallest when a replacement is needed. But what does that make the Tallest? A meaningless title and transformation, chosen arbitrarily by the AI overlords? Well, I don’t think so, actually… but maybe that, and more on the “meaty” morphology of their race is all a tangent fit for another day and post ;)

Alaska (No. 2)
Indigenous people have lived in Alaska for thousands of years, and it is widely believed that the region served as the entry point for the initial settlement of North America by way of the Bering land bridge. The Russian Empire was the first to actively colonize the area beginning in the 18th century, eventually establishing Russian America, which spanned most of the current state and promoted and maintained a native Alaskan Creole population. The expense and logistical difficulty of maintaining this distant possession prompted its sale to the U.S. in 1867 for US$7.2 million (equivalent to $157 million in 2023). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Abundant natural resources have enabled Alaska—with one of the smallest state economies—to have one of the highest per capita incomes, with commercial fishing, and the extraction of natural gas and oil, dominating Alaska's economy. U.S. Armed Forces bases and tourism also contribute to the economy; more than half of the state is federally-owned land containing national forests, national parks, and wildlife refuges. It is among the most irreligious states, one of the first to legalize recreational marijuana, and is known for its libertarian-leaning political culture, generally supporting the Republican Party in national elections. The Indigenous population of Alaska is proportionally the second highest of any U.S. state, at over 15 percent, after only Hawaii.

Speaking of asks though I’d love to request a Johnny fic where the reader is completely aware that she’s being manipulated, and that nothing but bad will come of associating with Johnny. Except her saviour complex gets the better of her, and not wanting to waste the amount of effort she’s already put into the relationship, she pushes on with the mindset that she can be the one to change something inside him, only to be completely wrong and at his mercy, regretting the fact she ever thought of this man as fixable.
Johnny is of course making fun of her the entire time, finding her perception of him completely out of touch and naive, shaming and humiliating her. You can definitely make it smutty too should you want. 😳

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry for taking so long on this one, I had an idea for it forever ago but I had to wait for them to release Johnny's Shack so I didn't get to it until now, I hope it was worth the wait 😈
••••
“Always knew you were a lil ditzy. Didn't think you were full-on stupid, though,” Johnny teased, grinning down at you. Your wrists were in one of his hands as he pressed you against the beverage fridge in the ‘Last Chance’ gas station. Drayton Sawyer cleaned the countertop, trying his best not to look curious.
“I just wanted to see where you worked!” You protested, trying to keep your voice low to keep from drawing attention. You had secretly followed Johnny here after he'd spent the night at your place.
But the moment you walked into the gas station, Johnny cornered you, as if he’d known you were following him all along.
“Told ya not to worry about my job, sugar,” he leaned in, his lips inches from yours. “Now you're really in for it.”
“Johnny,” you breathed in his exhale, cigarettes and iron. “Is something wrong? Let me help you.”
You knew there were plenty of things wrong with Johnny; how manipulative he was, his secretive nature, and that he was struggling to commit. But something told you not to give up. Someday, there would be a breakthrough.
You could still save him.
Johnny had left your house this morning with his mind elsewhere. He barely kissed you before he left to who knows where. You'd had enough with the secrets.
“Dumb little bunny. You can't do shit to help me. Best you manage is addin’ to my problems,” he said, sneering.
Your brow furrowed, the urge to protest growing stronger. “You've barely tried to trust me! Six months and I've never even seen where you live!”
A trucker stared at you two from across the gas station, quickly averting his eyes when Johnny glared over his shoulder.
Johnny turned back to you, drawing even closer, his grip on your wrists tightening. “You wanna see where I live, hm? Well, I guess I don't got a choice but to show you now, do I?”
Your next batch of complaints died in your throat. “W-wait, you mean it? I can see your home?”
“Now that Uncle Drayton has seen you, he'd think it were improper if I didn't.” He tilted his head, his smirk growing.
You wondered why Drayton would want you to go home with Johnny, but you were too elated to worry about logistics.
Johnny released your sore wrists and took you by the waist, leading you back to his truck.
Finally! Was this the breakthrough you'd been waiting for? Was Johnny finally opening up? You didn't want to get too ahead of yourself, but you felt proud as you hopped in his truck, and he took off down the dirt road.
It only took fifteen minutes before you pulled up the long gated driveway lined with sunflowers toward a beautiful home.
“Wow, Johnny! Your home is beautiful,” you said cheerily, holding his hand over the console.
He mumbled a response and continued down the drive, stopping outside of a brown shed with bull horns hung over the doorway.
Johnny turned the truck, which rumbled to a standstill, and then opened your passenger door, helping you down to the gravel.
Much to your surprise, he headed for the shed and opened the door, waiting for you.
“Oh,” you tried to hide your flustered expression, feeling stupid. Johnny laughed and smacked your ass as you entered his shed.
“Thought my ma's place was mine? Ya really are a dumb little bunny, ain't you?” He chided.
“Sorry, I just-” you trailed off, your eyes flitting around the shed. A ratty couch covered in beer bottles and empty cigarette boxes, a kitchen piled high with unwashed dishes, and far too many freezers greeted you.
Johnny's fingers caught your chin, pulling your attention to him.
“You’ll have plenty of time to look around later.” His hand trailed down your chin to your neck with a loose grip. He kept drinking you in, an inkling of regret in his eyes.
“You just had to stick your nose where it don't belong,” he said under his breath, his dark gaze intense.
“I just wanna help you, Johnny. If you'd let me see your place earlier, I coulda kept it clean for you.”
“You will, Bunny. You'll keep it nice and clean for me. And you'll make my dinner. And clean my clothes,” he said, smiling. But his smile was… off.
“Do you want me to move in?” You asked.
“In a sense,” he said.
“Why are you lookin’ at me like that, Johnny?” You asked nervously.
“Cause I'm tryin’ to figure how you stay alive with so little brain function.”
You flushed with embarrassment. “You don't need to be so rude,” you said, averting your eyes.
“Will it make things more clear if I do this?” Johnny let go of your chin and walked over to the front door. He proceeded to lock three locks, and then padlock the final one, draping the key around his neck by a silver chain.
“Is there something dangerous outside?” You asked, your eyes growing large.
Johnny barked a laugh. “Sort of. You see, my uncle Drayton don't take well to me keeping girls around. My ma neither.”
He saunters back over to you. “I was doing well keepin’ you a secret, but well, now that Drayton has seen me with you, he'll be wanting meat.”
“What?” You asked, your throat running dry.
“My uncle Drayton is famous for his BBQ. And for good reason. After all, he uses the freshest meat,” he said, coming to a stop in front of you. You were still standing by the wall beside the front door, which he pressed you against.
“What does that have to do with me?” You asked anxiously.
“Young, supple little bunnies got the most tender, sweet meat,” Johnny purred. “Just can't get enough of it. I keep hunting down naïve little rabbits, and he cooks ‘em up and sells ‘em at the station.”
“Rabbits? You're talking about rabbits, right?” You asked.
“Ditzy little bunny. I could scoop out half your brain and you might be better off.” He gripped your ass, pulling you against him. “You're the meat. Or you should be. I tried to keep you out of it honey, but you just had to get curious.”
“Drayton eats people?” You squeaked, horrified. “Wait, he feeds people to people?!”
“Mmhm. I catch ‘em, we butcher ‘em, Drayton cooks ‘em. Nice lil system we got goin’. And you should be next on the table.”
You gasped, all the blood draining from your face.
“But don't worry, sugar. Johnny won't let that happen. The moment you walked into the gas station, I hid your face from Drayton. All’s I gotta do is find another girl who looks like you to take your place.”
“This can't be happening,” you groaned, feeling sick to your stomach.
“Hey, hey now,” Johnny soothed, caressing your clammy cheek. “I got you, bunny. As long as you stay nice n’ quiet and don't leave home, I can keep you alive.”
“I c-can't leave?” You asked, your lip trembling.
“If my ma sees you, she'll kill ya herself. Na, it's better ‘f you stay right here.”
“I'm gonna be sick,” you said, pushing him aside and running to the sink. Your vomit coated the old pots and dishes, adding to the already rancid smell.
“Now, bunny,” Johnny said as he placed his hands on your hips, “remember this is all because you didn't listen to Johnny. Because you thought your dumb little fantasy of saving the bad boy was gonna come true.”
You whimpered, your entire body trembling as you dry heaved again.
“Now, I'm gonna be the one saving you, baby girl. All you gotta do is behave, and be a good girl for me. Can you do that?”
You stared at the vomit-coated sink and wondered if the rancid meat in the pan swarmed with maggots was human.
Johnny spun you around, pressing you against the disgusting sink.
“I said, can you be good for me?”
You shook in place, terrified and frozen.
Johnny slapped the dumb expression off your face, replacing it with one of anguish as you fell to the floor, hitting your head on one of the cabinet knobs beneath the sink.
“Answer me, dumb little bunny,” he snarled, kneeling down and forcing your gaze up to his by gripping your hair.
“Yes! I c-c-can! Please stop!” You sobbed, cradling your cheek.
A malicious smile unfurled on Johnny's face.
“I Caught and killed plenty of pets before, but never kept one,” he said. “I promise I'll try my best to take care of you, baby. Keep you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” he said happily.
You couldn't hear him, your ears were ringing so loudly. And still somewhere in your dumb little bunny brain, a little voice shouted- “I can still fix him!”

Saw your post about advertising revenue going down. Subscriptions to AMC for Q1 went up while TOWL was airing. What are your hopes for TBOC drawing in new audiences for AMC? Do you think Caryl is a big enough draw and if not in its current state what needs to change?
Subscriptions going up while TOWL aired was good (for AMC). The question is if it's fans of that particular show dipping in and then dropping off? AMC can't appeal to the larger TWD fanbase for all the spinoffs. They've slimmed down, so they need to find ways to grow those individual audiences and they need to retain them for the longhaul.
The appeal of TBOC is in the lead characters and sadly, not the story. Zabel hasn't done his homework (which an incoming showrunner should do): he has either only watched the montage and final scene of the flagship show, or he's relying on what other EPs have told him about the characters and their arcs. That's why he thought Ezekiel was Daryl's friend, since he was there to see Daryl off in the series finale.
Contrary to what you'd believe from looking at the fandom and the loudest screaming individuals, Carol resonates with the general audience, so seeing her again will probably draw curious viewers, but will they stick around? It depends largely on how her character arc is handled and also, her relationship with Daryl. They have natural chemistry, which the show should capitalize on as it comes with a built-in audience.
Will it, though?
From what I know about TBOC, Carol and Daryl's individual arcs merge at the end of block 2/beginning of block 3, so 204-205-ish. That means half the season has them separated. That's not ideal for a show where the main appeal lies in the relationship between the leads (whether romantic or platonic). Their emotional drives appear uneven, from my limited view of the beats, which might also be a viewer deterrent.
I think AMC needs to go all-in on canon once the storylines intersect—especially as it looks like we're in for some heavy nunbaiting—to at least get some good word of mouth and maybe draw back parts of the audience who've given up on the show. There were people who stopped watching TWD in S7-8 who came back after the original Caryl spinoff was announced. Having a loyal core audience is vital, so the studio needs to insure that those viewers are invested and engaged.
The show also needs a story engine. The escort mission in S1 had little urgency, beyond Daryl looking for a radio, and the actual meat and potatoes of the external plot was nondescript. Laurent was said (prophesied, really, by a Buddhist monk) to be the new Messiah who will "save humanity." It's very fuzzy on the details and not in a way that implies mystery. It screams of hand waving. The show has to draw in horror fans with a season arc that services the genre.
Caryl fans would watch for a good emotional arc and the GA should be treated to a well-conceived external plot. If you can cater to both of those demographics, you can grow the audience (because people tell others when they like a show) but it hinges on tight storytelling. You have to have an actual detailed plan and not a vague idea of where you're going—pantsing might work for a novelist, but never for a screenwriter. There's an A story, a B story and you may have a couple of runners, for the season as well as individual episodes, so a TV show requires organization. (And I'm getting off-topic here, so I'll leave the logistics at that.)
I'm not confident in TBOC based on what I know of Zabel's writing in general, his management of S1, his statements to the media and what I know about TBOC. I think the show needs a redirect into a different subgenre and some fresh ideas that showcase McReedus playing off each other and Caryl being thrust into the unfamiliar (both to the characters and the audience)—we need to see something new while the characters stay in-character to tether them to the character development already done on the flagship show. (And now I've written 'character' so many times that the word has lost all meaning 🙈)
Zabel played loose and fast with Daryl's backstory in S1. Fans are invested in those details and if it's made it to screen, the showrunner can't ignore them to shoehorn the already well-established protagonist into a plot involving new characters. He shouldn't love his own original creations more than the actual main character. All of these things give me pause as to Zabel's suitability as a showrunner for a show that already has a preexisting ecosystem.
That said, it looks like the show is getting delayed to a fall premiere, promo seems to be on a hold and the season finale may still be in post, which could be signs of AMC fixing problems and/or changing direction.
Sorry the answer was neither short nor succinct, but I hope it gave some clarity regarding my thought process. Obviously, like everybody else, I have ideas of what I'd do to increase ratings, but I'm not the person in the hot seat 🙃 I'm waiting for the panel at Tribeca to see what I can decipher from the inevitable sell speak.
It may be a long summer for us.

While Ukraine’s surprise combined-arms incursion into the Russian oblast of Kursk gets all the headlines, Kyiv continues to carry out a parallel, deep-strike operation to target Russian vulnerabilities, with continued attacks on oil refineries and fuel depots behind the front lines.
A massive tank farm in Proletarsk, a city in Russia’s Rostov region, has been burning uncontrollably for four days after Ukrainian drones slammed into 70-odd tanks full of diesel and gasoline; by some estimates, the fire could be incinerating as much as $200 million worth of Russian fuel. Overnight on Tuesday, Ukraine launched one of its biggest attacks yet on Moscow, and although most of those drones and missiles were shot down, Ukraine did seem to start another conflagration at an oft-hit refinery in Novoshakhtinsk, also in Rostov.
So far this year, Ukraine says that it has successfully attacked more than 30 Russian oil installations, some deep inside Russia. The latest estimates are that about 17 percent of Russia’s (admittedly ample) oil-refining capacity has been damaged to some extent by the strikes. But more broadly, Russia continues to export huge volumes of oil and even a fair bit of natural gas, ensuring that oil revenues continue to fuel its war machine despite the odd million spent here and there to repair damaged crackers and condensers.
Ukraine’s pinprick assaults on Russia’s oil infrastructure, often answered with counter-battery Russian missiles aimed at vulnerable Ukrainian power plants, are part of the latest tit-for-tat energy battle in the longer-term, less violent energy war that the two countries have waged for years, especially over natural gas supplies and prices.
In some ways, the energy fight is an adjunct to the fight on the battlefield. Ukraine’s ability to damage (even for short periods of time) Russian refineries and fuel depots is meant, in part, to undermine logistics for the Russian army, which continues to occupy large swaths of southern and eastern Ukraine. Blowing up expensive installations deep inside Russia is also a psychological boon for Ukraine, which has been largely on the back foot since early 2022. Russia’s systematic destruction of the Ukrainian electric power grid, meanwhile, is meant to undermine civilian morale and resilience ahead of winter.
The White House had initially warned Kyiv not to strike Russian oil installations, fearing Russian reprisals as well as an inconvenient spike in oil and gasoline prices ahead of the U.S. election, but Ukraine has plowed ahead regardless (just as it did with the Kursk incursion).
The big question is: Do all the eye-grabbing explosions at refineries and fuel depots make much of a difference to Russia’s surprisingly resilient oil-based economy?
“The drones can cause economic damage an order of magnitude or higher than the cost of the drones themselves, and so yes, there is some economic damage and net benefit, cost-wise. But the damage done is brief and relatively easy to repair,” said Sergey Vakulenko, an energy expert at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. “Will it make drastic impacts on Russian oil revenues? Probably not. The drones cannot do what the sanctions were unable to achieve.”
In some cases, Vakulenko said, the oil installations that Ukraine is targeting, chosen because they are within easy range of drones, may not be the critical marks that Kyiv imagines. Many of the older refineries in western Russia were built to take advantage of export customs loopholes that made it more beneficial to export barely refined oil products, even very low-quality ones, than to export regular crude. These aren’t the crown jewels, but the cracked zircons.
“The benefits of hitting those refineries may not be what the Ukrainians thought,” said Vakulenko, who was previously an oil executive at Russian and international companies.
Like the Kursk operation, high-profile blows by Ukraine threaten to distort the view of what otherwise remains an unequal battle. If the war has come to the energy patch, it is because Russia—from nearly the beginning of the conflict—has targeted Ukrainian power installations as a deliberate part of its campaign to destroy civilian infrastructure. During the first year of the full-scale invasion, Russia targeted easy-to-hit structures, such as power transformers, that could disrupt electricity across Ukraine, especially in big cities. But that damage was relatively easy to repair, and Ukraine made it through the first winter in fairly good shape.
At the beginning of this year, once Ukraine had homemade drones and missiles that could strike deep into Russia, thus neatly skirting both U.S. targeting prohibitions and leaky Russian air defenses, Kyiv began systematically hitting oil installations.
In response, Moscow intensified its campaign against Ukraine’s power grid, this time using heavy missiles to go after harder-to-destroy and much-harder-to-repair power plants themselves. More than half of Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity has been blown up or seriously damaged, a huge problem heading into winter given the reliance of Ukraine’s urban heating system (and water supplies) on the power plants.
But that campaign peaked just before summer; since then, there has been a respite in the Russian vendetta against power plants. The aftershocks are still felt, though. This week, in addition to a small-scale Russian attack on power facilities just across the border in Sumy, Ukraine announced a return to rolling blackouts for many parts of the country—mostly due to increased peak power demand during the hot summer months, but clearly exacerbated by the loss of so much generation capacity, which is still a huge concern for Ukrainian officials and Western experts.
“We have not seen wide-scale attacks for six weeks or so. Russia may just be collecting missiles to attack later in the year, in October or so. As of now, there is no sign that weaponization of energy is weakening,” said Andrian Prokip, an energy expert at the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute in Kyiv.
Yet the fight over refineries and power plants is just part of an even broader energy war that has aspects both of the absurd and of the absurdly normal.
Last week, after months of feverish speculation, conspiracy theories, and finger-pointing, reporting (and a German arrest warrant) emerged that seemed to put blame for the high-profile 2023 destruction of Russia’s no-longer-operational Nord Stream gas pipeline on a band of Ukrainian freelancers.
Meanwhile, Russian natural gas continues to transit in pipes through war-torn Ukraine, headed for customers farther west in Austria, Slovakia, and Italy. Not even Ukraine’s cross-border grab of Sudzha, the pumping station for the last trans-Ukraine pipeline, has interrupted the (limited) flows of gas moving from one belligerent state through another.
And then there are the nuclear power plants. Since early in the war, Russia has occupied the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, in the south-central part of Ukraine. Since then, the International Atomic Energy Agency has periodically warned of concerns over the safety and security of the plant, which is now in shutdown but still potentially dangerous. Two weeks ago, a mysterious fire broke out at one of the cooling towers; a few days later, a drone explosion threatened the power supply to the facility. For years now, Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of nuclear blackmail and brinkmanship over the plant.
Once Ukraine leapt across the Russian border, Russian media immediately warned that Ukrainian forces were seeking to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant for an apparent atomic hostage swap; most recently, Russian defenders began digging trenches around the reactors.
“The Russians have used and will continue to use the precarious state of nuclear safety at Zaporizhzhia for their own rhetorical and blackmail purposes. I suspect they may try to do the same in relation to the Kursk NPP,” said Darya Dolzikova, a research fellow of the Royal United Services Institute.
“I see no indication that Ukraine is looking to attack the nuclear plant and the Ukrainian government has refuted any suggestions to that end,” she added. “So any Russian statements or actions to the contrary I take to be fear-mongering by Moscow.”

Steam Heating in the Concrete Jungle: A Comprehensive Analysis of New York City's Historic and Sustainable Heating Infrastructure
Introduction
1.1 Historical Overview of Steam Heating
Steam heating has a storied history in New York City, dating back to the mid-1800s. Before steam heating, buildings relied on individual coal-burning stoves or fireplaces for warmth, resulting in uneven heating and numerous health hazards. The advent of steam heating, pioneered by engineer Stephen Gold in the 1850s, marked a significant advancement in heating technology. It offered a centralized heating solution, where steam generated in large plants could be distributed efficiently through a network of underground pipes to individual buildings, providing consistent and reliable heat throughout the city.
1.2 Advantages and Disadvantages of Steam Heating
The adoption of steam heating brought several advantages to New York City. It allowed for the elimination of individual heating units in each building, reducing maintenance costs and fire risks. Steam heating systems operate quietly, without the noise associated with forced-air systems, contributing to a more peaceful urban environment. Additionally, steam heating radiators became architectural features, adding a distinctive charm to buildings' interiors.
However, steam heating also presented challenges. One of the primary concerns was heat loss during steam transportation through the extensive underground pipe network. Proper insulation became crucial to mitigate energy waste and ensure efficient heat distribution. Additionally, as the steam system aged, it became susceptible to leaks, and repairing the aging infrastructure posed logistical and financial hurdles.
1.3 Comparison with Other Heating Systems
Compared to forced air and electric heating systems, steam heating offered unique benefits. Forced air systems, prevalent in modern construction, tend to create drafts and circulate dust, potentially exacerbating respiratory issues. Steam heating's ability to deliver consistent warmth without air movement was preferred in many buildings. Electric heating, while convenient and clean, often proved less efficient and costlier, especially for larger buildings served by the steam system.
How Steam Heating Works in New York
2.1 Steam Generation in Centralized Plants
The heart of the New York City steam heating system lies in its centralized plants. These large facilities, situated strategically throughout the city, house powerful boilers that generate steam from various energy sources, including natural gas, oil, and coal. In recent years, efforts have been made to transition towards cleaner fuels and renewable energy options, aligning with the city's sustainability goals.
2.2 Distribution of Steam in Underground Pipes
Once steam is produced, it is conveyed through an extensive network of underground pipes, known as steam mains. These mains crisscross the city, providing steam to thousands of buildings. The pipes are insulated to minimize heat loss, maximizing the efficiency of the distribution process.
2.3 Steam Radiators and Heat Exchange
Upon reaching individual buildings, the steam is directed to steam radiators or heat exchangers, depending on the building's size and heating requirements. Steam radiators are common in residential buildings, where the steam enters the unit and releases its latent heat as it condenses back into water, effectively warming the surrounding air. Heat exchangers are prevalent in commercial and industrial settings, where the steam's heat is transferred to the building's air or water distribution systems.
2.4 Steam Traps and Venting
Steam traps are essential components of the steam heating system. They are designed to remove condensate, the water formed when steam cools down, from the system. Proper venting is equally crucial, as it releases air and non-condensable gases from the pipes, preventing air locks and ensuring efficient steam flow. Specialized venting devices, such as air vents and steam traps, are installed throughout the system to maintain its optimal performance.
New York City Steam Heating System
3.1 Overview of NYC Steam System

Throughout your time dating Frankie most of your information came from his actions. He wasn’t particularly quiet about his love but his actions were always louder. When he could make it in time he would pick up flowers for you on his way home from work. If you two were texting during the day and mentioned feeling down, he would have food ordered by the time you got home. He even made sure to take care of all the logistics with your car, you can’t remember the last time you touched a gas pump.
The only slight inconsistency was in your sex life, it wasn’t bad, in fact it was the opposite. Never in your entire relationship were you left unsatisfied, but Frankie always seemed to hold back on being rough with you. At first you thought it was because he preferred gentle sex, however on the night of your first anniversary he let loose. There were bruises all over your body from his man-handling and your ass cheeks stung from him spanking you. Yet you never heard him moan as loud as that night.
In the morning, Frankie was distraught with his work until he realized it didn’t upset you. After that you kept asking him questions about his fantasies, assuring him it was a safe space. He admitted to fantasizing about bending you over and taking you roughly. Unwillingly.
You couldn’t lie and say it didn’t have some appeal despite its taboo nature. The both of you started talking about limits and your safe word, Frankie was worried you were only doing this to appease his sick desires. Though you probably wouldn’t have thought of it you couldn’t lie and say it didn’t turn you on. But even with him opening up it didn’t seem like he was particularly excited to flesh out his fantasy.
With Frankie’s birthday only being a matter of months away, you book a cabin for the weekend. You spent those months preparing and reading up on how other couples incorporated it into their sex lives. One particular woman said her husband was in the army and they decided to add predator versus prey to their CNC scenario. He gave her a head start before he “captured” her.
Just reading about it got you worked up so you decided to show Frankie after he got off work.
“It may have been your fantasy initially but I want to do this with you.” You stand behind him as he reads through the page you printed out. “We’ve already talked about everything and don’t you want your 46th birthday to be special?”
“You’ve had this cooked up since you booked that cabin huh?” Frankie sighs, he can’t deny how attractive it is that you want this just as much as he does. “As long as you’re sure.”
“How many times do I have to say yes?” Frankie laughs at your exasperation, “We’re taking your military stuff so you should go dig that out of the attic.” Before he can comment you sauntered off towards your shared bedroom.
…….
The area you picked is secluded with your closest neighbors being 3 miles in every direction. You didn’t need anyone getting the wrong idea of what would be happening. The heavy leaves on the trees were a deep green that served to keep out the sunlight and make the cabin look more eerie.
Frankie slowed the truck to a stop and let the engine cut out before turning to you. He made it clear he wanted you to make the first moves until it was time, unwilling to make you feel uncomfortable. You review the text on how to retrieve the keys and lean over to kiss Frankie.
You weren’t aiming for a peck but you were shocked at how quick Frankie was to suck on your bottom lip. Your hands found their way to his greying curls before tugging, and his hands reached out to grip your waist. As much as you were enjoying him you pressed your hands to his shoulders before breaking away first.
“Come on, I have to get ready.” Excitement fills you while you open the back door to get your bags.
“I got it, you go scope out the house.” Frankie doesn't have to tell you twice before you head up the porch steps. The lockbox thankfully opens at the code the owner gave you. Although this cabin is clearly on the older side, the inside has modern renovations but the charm isn’t lost. They kept all of the wood fixtures and the original fireplace but the furniture is definitely of this century.
Dark brown wood encases the hallway leading to the bedroom, even the lock on the door used a skeleton key. Frankie’s arms circle around your waist and his nose finds its spot in the curve of your neck. You feel him breathing in your scent and it only furthers your arousal from earlier.
“What’s the safe word?” His question catches you slightly off-guard.
“Peaches.” It takes a couple of seconds but you answer with ease.
“And if I ask you what your color is?” You wish you could say his insistence on your comfort was annoying.
“Red for stop, yellow is slow down, and green is good.” His arms tighten around you before he releases you altogether. When you turn around you see he’s brought only your bags into the room.
“I figured I’d get ready out there and you take your time in here.” Frankie’s hands were planted in his pockets to keep from fidgeting them. A simple nod and a smile were what Frankie saw before making his way out of the room.
Francisco hadn’t been able to try this with anyone else. He’d never been comfortable enough to admit he enjoyed something so depraved. But you were just as debased as he was and he could admit that’s what he loved so much about you.
With great precision Frankie began to put on his costume, at least that’s what it always felt like to him. Whenever it was on he had a role to play and it would be nothing like the attentive and caring man you’ve come to know. While lacing up his boots he made sure his pants were tucked into them like he was always taught. His vest was taut over his stomach and he had it on the loosest setting. The standard oil hat was discarded next to his folded clothes on the couch.
The only weapons he was arming himself with were his hunting knife and a pistol that wasn’t loaded. On his way out to the porch, he made sure they were strapped in tightly. Waiting for you to come out didn’t take long and Frankie had never been so pleased by the sight of you. A white satin nightgown fell just above your knees with a see-through but thin outer coat. His dark eyes travel to where your breasts are barely contained in the dress.
Silence from Frankie both unnerves and excites you and you realize he must be in character. His face is as stoic as you’d ever seen it but you know he likes what he sees. While taking in his uniform you mentally thank that lady for sharing her sex life with the internet. Without thought you reach out to touch the pistol strapped to his thigh. Your wrist is caught in the tight hold of his hand as he stares down at you with void eyes.
“3 minutes.” He releases your wrist and takes a step back.
A quick second is spent turning your head frantically to find which way would be best, but all paths look the same. You take off down the porch steps and to the left. The thundering of your heart transfers throughout your body while you move faster. Right before you disappear into the tree line, you chance a look at Frankie only to find him gripping the ledge of the porch like a caged animal.
Regret fills you with house slippers as your choice of running shoes. Cold air reminds you of how impractical your nightgown is as well. The sound of a branch snapping sends chills down your spine, there is no way it’s time for him to come after you.
Frankie has a way of making his presence known no matter where he is. Usually, it’s like a comforting hug but right now it feels like a shadow dreadfully looming over you. As much as you want to stop and survey your surroundings you know that’s exactly when he’ll get you.
A routine of breathing in through your nose and out your mouth helps keep your equilibrium under control. That calmness is abruptly disturbed when a stray branch catches your overcoat, instead of wasting your time pulling you hurriedly pull the garment off your shoulders. Dread consumes you when you hear heavy footfalls heading straight to you. With less than a second to think you creep over to the biggest tree you can find and hide behind it.
Your hand covers your mouth in case the puffs of breath leaving your mouth are too loud. His steps slow down and you can assume he’s seen your missing clothing on the branch. With widened eyes, you watch from your peripheral if he makes any move toward your hiding place. Luckily you hear him begin to take off in the direction he believes you went in.
Quickly and quietly you bound in the other direction letting the adrenaline and fear fuel your steps. Intrunsically you know that distraction won’t keep Frankie long and this little game of yours is coming to an end.
The familiar tree line lets you see the house-baked in a burnt orange from the falling sun. The beautiful view is obstructed when you run into Frankie’s chest out of seemingly nowhere. You look up at him only to see those dead eyes staring back at you. Though it may be moot you try and slip away from him, only to feel the cold sharp blade of his hunting knife. The back of your neck is held still by his hand.
“You think you’re so clever huh?” His hot breath fans over your face while you’re frozen in place. “All that and I’m still gonna have my way with you.” Your thighs rub together at his debased words.
Frankie uses the hand on your neck to force you to the ground and the dirt digs into your knees. While on all fours you look up at him with tears rimming your eyes.
“Please don’t do this.” Your small voice is easily heard in the quiet forest.
“Color?” Frankie pauses the scene worrying he may have gone too far.
“Green.” You are quick to quell any doubt he has.
“What are you gonna do to stop me?” Frankie’s hands move to his belt as he begins to loosen his pants. “Get on your knees.”
Knowing what predicament you’re in you listen and face him on your knees. The dirt and rock dig into your skin in a way that will soon be uncomfortable. Frankie manages to pull out his half-hard cock and begins stroking it in front of your face.
“Open your mouth.” He drags his cock along your lips while he waits for you to obey his orders.
As soon as you oblige he slides halfway into your mouth, the feel of your throat gagging has his hand sliding to the back of your head. Slowly but surely he slips further into your mouth reveling in the tears streaming down your face. Groans fill the air at how tight and wet your mouth is. He feels the spit dribbling down his balls while you swallow him whole.
Frankie slightly bends down to slide your strap down so he can grope your tit. The groan that vibrated in your mouth sent Frankie’s hips stuttering deeper into your mouth. His rough handling of you has the wet spot in your panties growing. He pulls himself fully out of your mouth with a pop and watches your swollen lips glisten. His thumb juts out to circle your lips while he appreciates the wrecked sight of you.
“Turn around and spread your legs.” His blown pupils make your body move in a hypnotic-like state to obey him.
When you turn around you make sure to hike up the satin material before spreading yourself before him. The pretty white dress is now stained with dirt and saliva, the thought has Frankie throbbing. He loves the fantasy of ruining you.
“Pull your panties down.” His voice was low yet commanding and you wasted no time hooking your thumbs into your panties.
You pull down your soaked panties that are sticking to your core. Frankie’s tongue darts out when he finally sees your cunt. He settles himself behind you and uses his hands to spread you further before spitting on your pussy. A surprised gasp from you turns into a moan when he begins pulling the tip in and out.
Rough and unforgiving hands find themselves gripping your waist and brace yourself with elbows and hands in the dirt. Your breath grows heavier the further Frankie sinks into you. The slow drag of his cock steadily gets faster and your walls clench around him. Despite your ass clapping against his lower stomach with every thrust, he decides he needs to feel more of you.
Once you feel like you’ve finally caught your breath Frankie’s hand slides its way over your throat. His mouth is next to your ear and you can hear the slight whimper in his pants. The way he grinds himself into you helps to rub against that spongey spot for you.
“This pussy was made for me.” He can't hold back his moans when you feel so good. “Can’t let you go after this.” His hand on the ground grips the dirt to ground himself.
All you can do is pant and moan like a bitch in heat. You feel almost delirious the way Frankie knows all of your spots. His balls start to clench up and he can feel his hips start to lose their rhythm. He hunches himself into you one last time before he empties himself into you. His breathing in your ear becomes slower and longer while he tries to calm himself down.
“Thank you.” His soft voice once again back as he slowly slides out and kisses your shoulder. Frankie hauls the both of you upright before fixing himself back in his pants.
“Happy Birthday Fransico.” Your tired smile makes his heart thunder in his chest.
On the short walk back to the cabin he holds you in his arms so you don’t tire yourself out more. He immediately takes you to the bathroom where he fills the tub for you to bathe. He helps you undress and holds his hand out for you to safely step in.
You lean against the tub with your eyes closed as he washes your body. The hot water almost puts you to sleep until you feel Frankie’s thick fingers at your entrance. He doesn’t need to warm you up before he’s pumping them in and out of you while you grip his bicep. His mouth is next to your ear, forming words to tell you how much he loves you.
@emilianamason , @harriedandharassed , sorry for the late tag.

We all know that Billy moved from Cali to Hawkins. But I don't feel like it gets fully fleshed out enough just how much whiplash that was. Especially if (as a lot of the common place acceptance is) that Billy moved from San Diego.
As of the 1980 US national census, the total population in San Diego was over 1.7 million people. The estimated 80s population for Hawkins is 10 to 15,000 people. And just for perspective, the 1980 US census size for Indianapolis, Indiana was just over 700,000.
This would be the most epic downsize. To say the least for Billy. A city with a concentrated downtown and outer metropolitan and surrounding suburbs. To go from a city that feels like it's endless, with mountain and ocean views. Vistas and foothills. Multicultural districts and pockets all over with all sorts of different spoken languages and the people and their cultures that settled with them. A multitude of food choices. A temperate climate with predictable weather patterns year round. Mass transit. Multiple interstate and state route connectors. Also not being that far from the international border to Mexico.
Then to move to Hawkins...
A city thats most notable area is the downtown. The town square. The courthouse, the police station, firehouse, town hall. A compact area so small and lacking in development that if you pull onto Main St and drive straight you can be in and out of the entire town in under twenty minutes. A town with maybe three good restaurants that the locals just have on an endless rotation and that's good enough for them. A town with more gas stations than big box stores. A town with no concept of foreign food outside of Italian and "Mexican" (but it's just run by some white guy who lived south of the border for a while in a past life). A town. With no mass transit, where every child has a bicycle or a good pair of walking shoes. Where the weather can shift over the course of an afternoon, but the tornadoes can creep up in the dead of night. Where sirens blare and people have to take to basements. Where ice storms can knock out power for days. Where houses run on propane and kerosene rather than natural gas. One decent grocery store. One post office. No certainty that specific liked food or product brands will exist. A much higher likelihood that produce is sold and has to be eaten in season.
Suffice to say that there'd be so many logistical adjustments from Billy literally being a "city kid" to being in the middle of fucking nowhere.
He probably walked right into a field and screamed his first night and I don't blame him.

At the Argus conference in Istanbul, someone asked me if I had ever thought about hedging the fertiliser business through agricultural commodities trading. I tried to recall which major agricultural trading houses had ever ventured into the fertiliser market.
It’s intriguing that giants like Dreyfus, ADM, Toepfer, or Bunge haven’t found the same success in fertiliser trading despite their dominance in agricultural commodities. One might think their deep market knowledge and extensive networks in grain trading would position them for success in fertilisers, but the reality is more complex.
Fertilisers are closely tied to energy markets, especially natural gas, and mined resources like potash and phosphates. While these companies handle agricultural commodities, where pricing is more transparent, fertilisers operate in opaque markets driven by local factors, regulations, and geopolitical issues. This makes fertiliser hedging through agricultural commodities less effective.
Logistics further complicate things. Fertilisers are bulky, need to be transported across vast distances, and must arrive within specific planting windows. The precision needed in fertiliser distribution is far more challenging than that of grains, where storage and delivery are more flexible.
Moreover, the fertiliser market is dominated by a few large players, making it difficult for newcomers like ADM or Dreyfus to gain ground. Unlike grain trading, fertilisers involve dealing with strong regional players, less transparent pricing systems, and complex regulations.
Then there’s the issue of risk management. Hedging fertiliser positions with agricultural commodities seems logical, but the two markets aren’t perfectly correlated. Fertiliser prices depend on energy costs and mining outputs, which make hedging across commodities complicated and often unreliable.
Despite their vast resources and networks, these companies faced challenges they weren’t fully equipped to overcome in fertilisers. Their experience highlights the complexity of the fertiliser market, where success requires mastering logistics, risk management, and navigating a unique set of market dynamics.
And yes, I do remember Ameropa.

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PREPARE YOUR INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY FOR WINTER
It's getting cold outside, and winter is coming sooner than we'd like to acknowledge. When you own a piece of heavy machinery, you understand how important it is to keep it well-maintained to ensure that it lasts as long as possible and always functions at peak efficiency. This is extremely vital as winter is approaches and the equipment may stay dormant for a longer time than usual. Here are few tips from Go Gauge Logistics.
Pre Winter Preparation
Make sure your machinery has been serviced as per manufacturer guidelines by scheduling an inspection and maintenance before winter sets in. Maintenance tasks like checking and topping off fluids, adjusting tyre pressure, adding an engine block heater, and inspecting hydraulic hoses and other vital components are all part of this.
Prepare your Storage area
If you are storing your machinery inside, prepare a space that is clean and dry. You may want to invest in some protective floor coverings, depending on the type of floor you have in your storage building. If storing outside, investing in a quality tarp is a smart idea. This will help to prevent rusting caused by freezing and thawing water on the surface of your machinery.  For an easier start and less time brushing off snow, keep your machine indoors while not in use. To protect hinges and joints, detach and store attachments when your machine is off in winter.
Keep batteries charged and warm
If the temperature in the storage area freezes, remove the battery and store it at normal temperature to prevent excessive draining. A warm battery performs far better than a cold battery. If the equipment is stored in a temperature-controlled garage, its relocation poses less of a risk. During the winter, batteries should be linked to smart chargers or slow chargers if possible. At this time, battery connections should also be inspected and cleaned. Corroded terminals might cause complications with starting and charging. Operators should remove any dirt or debris from the top of the battery, as it might create a conductive route and deplete energy slowly. The primary consideration here is ensuring that the terminal posts and cables have clean and secure contact, so providing the best and most consistent current flow from the batteries to the machine.
Maintain a full fuel tank
Fill the tank when storing equipment in winter to avoid condensation from polluting fuel lines. After each use, refill the fuel tank and empty and clean the water separator to prevent freezing and algae growth and to remove water, debris and sediments. With a clean fuel system, the machine can handle even the coldest winters. Even if the machinery was reasonably new before storage, filters may need to be changed. Make sure to provide room for expansion while loading fluids, especially diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Machine reservoirs are designed to handle freezing DEF, but store bulk DEF in heated storage during winter. Your local dealer can help you store and handle DEF, which is sensitive to temperature.
Conduct a Visual Inspection
Before putting a machine into storage or using it in the winter, it is best practise to inspect it visually and do any necessary maintenance or repairs. Hydraulic hoses and connections require extra care. As a result, they are more likely to break under stress in the cold. Before starting off, it's a good idea to inspect the condition of the electrical wiring, attachments, and hoses, as well as the rest of the equipment. Check the condition of the hydraulic hoses, belts, and tyres for any signs of damage. Clean the tyres and undercarriage of any snow, dirt, and debris.
Take care of Tires
To avoid the tyres freezing to the ground, remove any snow or ice from them and park the machinery on boards. Tire pressure should be checked often. Dry nitrogen should be used to replenish the tyres if the pressure lowers, which can happen in colder temperatures. Tire air valves are protected from ice formation by using dry nitrogen. Not all heavy machinery will have tyres, but if yours does, make sure to check the pressure before putting it away. Tire pressure should be set according to the owner's handbook. However, if you plan to store your machinery on a cement floor, it may be a good idea to slightly over-inflate the tyres to avoid flat areas. We all know that in cooler temperatures, they can lose air pressure more rapidly. .

"A great deal of the offshored industrial production at the other end of the extended supply chains celebrated in People’s Republic of Walmart is actually carried out in comparatively small job shops that would be more efficiently collocated with local market areas. The technology at the actual point of production, in such cases, is modest in scale and best suited for local or regional production. But it’s enclosed within a corporate institutional framework of extended logistic chains through the framework of copyright, patent, and trademark law which gives corporations a legal monopoly on disposal of an outsourced product. The only reason the facilities in China aren’t all producing identical goods directly for the local market, and selling at a price without the trademark and patent markups, is the enclosure of decentralized production technology within a centralized corporate legal framework. And the only reason the production facilities making goods for people in Iowa are sited in China instead of in Iowa is that the labor there is cheaper.
(...)
Lean production guru James Womack observed that “oceans and lean production are not compatible.” Simply shifting inventories from giant warehouses of finished product or intermediate goods to warehouses disguised as trucks and container ships isn’t really reducing overall inventory stocks at all. It’s just sweeping the batch and-queue bloat of Sloanism under the rug. The outsourced component manufacturers “are located on the wrong side of the world from both their engineering operations and their customers… [in order] to reduce the cost per hour of labor.” To properly apply lean principles it is necessary “to locate both design and physical production in the appropriate place to serve the customer.”49
In his Foreword to Waddell’s and Bodek’s The Rebirth of American Industry (something of a bible for American devotees of the Toyota Production System), H. Thomas Johnson (an expert in lean accounting) writes:
Some people see lean as a pathway to restoring the large manufacturing giants the United States economy has been famous for in the past half century…. The cheap fossil fuel sources that have always supported such production operations cannot be taken for granted any longer. One proposal that has great merit is that of rebuilding our economy around smaller scale, locally-focused organizations that provide just as high a standard living [sic] as people now enjoy, but with far less energy and resource consumption. Helping to create the sustainable local living economy may be the most exciting frontier yet for architects of lean operations.
So except in a few cases like geographically situated mineral resources, microprocessor production, and the like that require long-distance shipping for genuine technical reasons, most of what goes on in the logistic chains Phillips loves so much is just waste production. And that’s a lot of waste production. To put it simply, Walmart’s and Amazon’s increasingly automated inventory systems and just-in-time global logistic chains achieve “efficiency” only in a relative sense. To borrow a phrase from Peter Drucker, they’re the most efficient way of doing a very inefficient thing that ought not to be done at all.
(...)
Capitalism is not in crisis because, as per the orthodox Marxist model, its productivity so great that it undermines capitalist relations of production. It is in crisis because it has chosen models of technological development and organizing production that are unproductive in terms of how efficiently they use inputs. Capitalism is a system founded on extensive growth — that is, on the addition of ever larger quantities of resource inputs, inputs which are artificially cheap and abundant because of the enclosure of land and natural resources. Now that we are in the age of Peak Oil, and approaching the age of Peak Coal, Peak Gas, and analogous limits to a wide range of other material inputs, capitalism is experiencing a crisis of extensive development.
Post-capitalist transition is not simply a matter of celebrating mass production factories and global logistic chains as the “colossal forces of production” Marx wrote of, and saying “Thank you, capitalists, but we’ll take over from here.” Those mass production factories and global logistic chains are the prime examples of the kinds of inefficiency created by a system that treated material inputs as artificially cheap and abundant and pursued growth by throwing more of them on the pile instead of using existing inputs more efficiently."
-Kevin Carson, “We Are All Degrowthers. We Are All Ecomodernists. Analysis of a Debate” (2019)
