wrong time, right person - carlos sainz (1/4)

୨ৎ : pairing : carlos sainz x fem!reader ୨ৎ : synopsis : years after a bitter breakup, you and carlos sainz reunite unexpectedly. old wounds resurface, but so does undeniable love. will history repeat itself?
୨ৎ : genre : romance, angst, humor, drama ୨ৎ : tws : mild language, arguing, friendships ending, bantering, suggestive humor, mentions of alcohol consumption. ୨ৎ : wc : 952
part one | part two | part three | part four

Spain was never supposed to feel like home.
You were just an exchange student, a stranger in a country where the language tripped you up, where conversations flowed around you like a current you couldn’t quite swim in. The other students were nice, polite even, but distant. They smiled, but no one really saw you.
Except for him.
Carlos Sainz wasn’t just friendly; he was relentless. He talked to you like it was the most natural thing in the world, like he had made it his personal mission to make you feel at home. The first time he sat next to you at lunch, he didn’t ask the usual "Where are you from?" or "How do you like Spain?" Instead, he stole a fry from your plate and smirked.
“You always eat this little?”
It took you a second to process what he said, your brain scrambling for the right words. When you did, you narrowed your eyes and stole a fry right back.
“Mind your business.”
He laughed, loud, unapologetic. And just like that, best friends.
He made Spain feel like home. He dragged you to local karting tracks, shoved a helmet on your head, and laughed until he was breathless as you struggled to drive at half his speed. You sat on the asphalt after his races, drinking cheap sodas and listening to him talk about his dreams; Formula 1, podiums, championships. You still remember the way his eyes lit up when he talked about his father, the legendary Carlos Sainz Sr., how he wanted to make him proud.
“You think I can do it?” he asked once, voice quieter than usual.
You scoffed, nudging his shoulder. “I think you’re already doing it.”
And you were right.
He climbed the ranks, and you were right there beside him, just like he was there for you. Modeling started small, with local gigs, small shoots. but soon after, your face was showing up in magazines, whispered about in the industry. The first time you booked an international job, Carlos picked you up and spun you around like it was his victory too.
“You’re gonna be famous,” he said, grinning. “I’m gonna see your face on billboards, aren’t I?”
It was fun, easy, and natural, until it wasn’t.
The higher he climbed, the further away he felt. The more you succeeded, the less you seemed to talk. At first, it didn’t feel like a big deal. You still sent texts, still FaceTimed when you could. But slowly, the missed calls turned into silence, and suddenly, you were watching each other’s successes through headlines instead of in person.
Then, he made it to Formula 1.
And you? You were stepping into high-fashion modeling.
The night it all fell apart wasn’t supposed to be anything special. Just another call that went unanswered. Just another missed "good luck" before a race. But this time, Carlos called back, and he called back angry.
“You don’t even care anymore.” His voice was sharp, cutting straight through your exhaustion.
You blinked, phone pressed to your ear, the weight of his words settling deep into your chest. “What?”
“You heard me,” he snapped. “You missed my race. Again.”
Your stomach twisted. “Carlos, I had a show. You knew that.”
“Right, right,” he said bitterly. “Another shoot, another runway, another excuse. Siempre tienes una razón, ¿verdad?” (You always have a reason, right?)
Heat flared in your cheeks. “Excuse me? Don’t you dare act like you’re the only one with a career! I support you, Carlos, but I have my own dreams too.”
He laughed, but it wasn’t the kind that made your heart feel light, it was sharp, hollow, cold. “Support? ¿Eso es lo que llamas esto?” (Is that what you call this?) “Because it feels a lot like you just don’t give a damn anymore.”
Anger burned hot in your chest. “That’s not fair.”
“No?” His voice dropped, quieter, but somehow even more dangerous. “Entonces dime, when was the last time you actually showed up for me? When was the last time you watched me race, not through a screen, but actually there?”
You opened your mouth, then closed it. Because the answer was obvious. And it wasn’t one you wanted to say out loud.
Carlos exhaled sharply, like he had been hoping, hell, borderline begging, for you to fight him on it. But you couldn’t.
He scoffed. “Eso pensé.” (That’s what I thought.)
Tears burned behind your eyes. “This isn’t fair, Carlos. You’re always traveling, I’m always traveling! What the hell do you expect me to do?”
“I expected you to care.” His voice cracked. Just slightly. But it was enough to break you.
Your breath hitched. “You think I don’t?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted, and that hurt worse than anything else.
Because Carlos always knew. He always understood you, always read between the lines, always saw you even when you felt invisible to everyone else. But now? Now he wasn’t even sure.
The silence stretched between you like an open wound.
And then he said it.
“Quizás sea más fácil así.” (Maybe it’s just easier this way.)
It felt like the wind had been knocked out of you. “What?”
His voice was flat, emotionless. Like he had already given up. “Maybe we’ve just been holding on to something that doesn’t exist anymore.”
You felt something inside you shatter.
Carlos had been your best friend. Your person. Your safe place. But now he was just...just nothing.
“I don’t have time for this.” Your voice was quiet, raw, aching. “I have an early flight.”
He let out a bitter laugh. “Por supuesto que sí.” (Of course you do.)
Neither of you apologized.
Neither of you fought for it.
Neither of you said goodbye.
Carlos left for another race. You left for another shoot.
Neither of you looked back.
Until you were given no choice...

The trilobite crest of the Heterodynes really raises questions about the history of palaeontology in the setting.
Like, honestly, considering this is a world where autism gives you deeply unpleasant cognitive superpowers that are nevertheless constrained (to some extent) by your background knowledge, it would kind of make sense if a lot of the 'making lists' sorts of natural science were millennia ahead of our timeline. Because that's a science you can do without an industrial revolution behind you, right?
According to wikipedia the trilobite (wildly common as fossils go) first appears in the scientific literature in 1698 when
Rev. Edward Lhwyd published in 1698 in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the oldest scientific journal in the English language, part of his letter "Concerning Several Regularly Figured Stones Lately Found by Him", that was accompanied by a page of etchings of fossils.[118] One of his etchings depicted a trilobite he found near Llandeilo, probably on the grounds of Lord Dynefor's castle, he described as "the skeleton of some flat Fish".
A family with the antiquity and inflexibility of the Heterodynes is not going to have adopted their characteristic logo within the past 200 years. 200 years ago is like. Euphrosinia's day. They were already infamous on a massive scale. There is no way.
So does this suggest a classical discipline of palaeontology? Like. To do really useful paleontology you need a fairly systematic process, and I feel like if the scientific method had recognizably developed by the classical period this would have ended the 'wizard spark' era sooner than the Renaissance.
Or did the trilobite just not perish in the Permian mass extinction event and they still exist???
Also oh hey check it out, trilobites are apparently technically a Welsh discovery huh.
#hoc est meum#it's also a setting with time travel#but not like on an ~everyday basis#so i don't know if i want to blame the trilobite on that#tho ig it would be funny if lucrecia somehow caused the heterodyne trilobite by messing with the timeline#the queens do thoroughly upend most assumptions about history too ig#but i still want to poke at it#girl genius#trilobite

The excitement buzzed in the air as Y/N YL/N, the talented bassist of the rising rock band "Eclipsed," prepared for a much-anticipated interview. The band had been making waves in the music scene, and the media was eager to learn more about the individuals behind the electrifying sound. Y/N, known for their skillful bass playing and enigmatic stage presence, was ready to share their journey.
The interview took place in a trendy studio, with the band seated on a chic, modern couch. Y/N's fingers idly traced the frets on their bass, a well-worn instrument that had seen countless gigs and late-night jam sessions. The interviewer, a music journalist with an infectious passion for the industry, dove straight into the questions.
"So, Y/N, let's start with your musical journey. How did you find your way to the bass guitar?" the interviewer inquired, leaning forward.
Y/N grinned, the memory of their musical awakening evident in their eyes. "I actually started with the guitar, but one day, I heard this deep, resonant bass line that just spoke to me. It was like the heartbeat of the song, and from that moment, I was hooked. I switched to the bass, and it felt like coming home."
The rest of the band nodded in agreement, acknowledging the pivotal role Y/N played in shaping the band's distinctive sound. The lead singer, Maya, chimed in, "Y/N brings a unique energy to our music. The bass lines add a whole new layer, creating this dynamic and powerful sonic landscape."
As the conversation flowed, the interviewer shifted gears, asking about the band's creative process. Drummer Alex spoke about the collaborative nature of their songwriting, while the guitarist, Jake, discussed the influences that shaped their sound. Y/N interjected with tales of late-night jam sessions and the organic evolution of their music.
"We all bring something different to the table," Y/N explained. "It's like a musical potluck. Each of us has our own tastes and influences, and when we come together, it creates this fusion of sound that defines Eclipsed."
The conversation turned to the band's recent successes, including a sold-out show and a growing fan base. Y/N's eyes sparkled with gratitude as they reflected on the journey.
"It's been incredible," Y/N shared. "Our fans are amazing. They connect with the raw emotion in our music, and that's the most rewarding part. Music is a language that transcends words, and seeing people resonate with what we create is truly humbling."
As the interview with Eclipsed continued, the interviewer shifted gears, a mischievous glint in their eyes.
"Now, Y/N, the music world is full of incredible artists, and one rising star who seems to have captured a lot of attention is Renee Rapp. Have you had the chance to meet her, and what are your thoughts on her music?" the interviewer inquired, a sly smile playing on their lips.
Y/N's expression lit up at the mention of Renee Rapp. "Oh, Renee is fantastic! I haven't had the pleasure of meeting her in person yet, but I'm a big fan of her work. Her music has this raw authenticity that really resonates with me. It's always refreshing to see artists who pour their heart and soul into their craft."
The rest of the band nodded in agreement, expressing their admiration for Renee Rapp's talent. Maya, the lead singer, chimed in, "I love how she fearlessly embraces her uniqueness. It's inspiring to see artists who aren't afraid to be true to themselves, both in their music and their persona."
The interviewer pressed a bit further, asking if there were any specific songs or aspects of Renee Rapp's music that Y/N found particularly inspiring. Y/N thought for a moment before responding, "I really connect with the way she uses her voice to convey emotion. It's powerful and evocative. As musicians, we're always drawn to those artists who can create a genuine connection with their audience, and Renee does that exceptionally well."
The conversation then meandered into a discussion about musical influences, with each band member sharing their favorite artists and the impact those musicians had on their own sound. It was clear that Eclipsed Echoes drew inspiration from a diverse range of genres and artists, contributing to the richness of their music.
"And, Y/N, given that you've expressed admiration for Renee Rapp's talent, do you have any comments for her?" the interviewer asked, a faint hint of curiosity in their tone.
Y/N, ever composed, smiled with her teeth. "I do,-" She paused, looking at the camera directly. "Keep your head up, bitch. you're effortlessly you and that shit is wicked. You gotta remember the comments of your loved ones are the only ones that matter."
The rest of the band nodded in agreement, sensing the delicate nature of the question. Maya, the lead singer, added, "Absolutely. It's crucial to separate someone's art from their personal lives. We're all here because of our love for music, and that's what we should celebrate."
The interviewer, quickly shifted gears steering the conversation back toward the band's music and upcoming projects. Y/N, always poised and focused on the music, gracefully navigated through the interview, steering it away from personal matters and back into the realm of creativity and passion.
As the interview concluded, it was evident that the members of Eclipsed were not only talented musicians but also individuals who valued respect and professionalism in their interactions. The episode served as a reminder that, while curiosity about an artist's personal life may arise, the primary focus should always remain on the artistry and creativity that unite the diverse and dynamic world of music.
A few days after the interview, Y/N found a pleasant surprise in their Instagram inbox. It was a message from none other than Renee Rapp herself. Excitement bubbled within Y/N as they read the message.
"Hey Y/N! 🌟 I caught your interview, and it was awesome hearing your thoughts on my music. Your band's sound is killer! Would love to chat more and maybe hang out sometime. What do you say?"
Y/N quickly replied, expressing their gratitude and enthusiasm for the unexpected message. The conversation flowed effortlessly as they exchanged thoughts about music, shared favorite artists, and found common ground in their passion for creating authentic, powerful art.
Renee suggested meeting up for a casual hangout, perhaps grabbing coffee or exploring a local record store. Y/N eagerly agreed, and plans were set in motion for a meeting between two talented musicians who had connected through their shared love for the art form.
As the day of the meetup arrived, Y/N couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. They met Renee at a cozy cafe, and from the moment they greeted each other, it was clear that the connection extended beyond the digital realm. The conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with laughter, shared stories of musical journeys, and a mutual appreciation for the creative process.
Y/N and Renee's casual hangout unfolded into an afternoon of shared laughter, animated discussions about music, and an undeniable chemistry that lingered in the air. The cozy cafe provided the perfect backdrop for their burgeoning connection, with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enhancing the warmth of the atmosphere.
As they chatted about their favorite bands and musical influences, Y/N couldn't help but be captivated by Renee's infectious enthusiasm. The conversation flowed seamlessly between topics, from the intricacies of songwriting to the exhilarating rush of performing on stage. Each shared anecdote deepened the connection, forging a bond between two artists who understood the unique challenges and joys of their chosen path.
The flirtatious banter began subtly, with playful glances and gentle teasing. Renee's laughter resonated like a melody, and Y/N found themselves drawn to her magnetic energy. As they strolled through a nearby record store, fingers lightly brushing against vinyl covers and sharing recommendations, the air seemed charged with an unspoken tension.
At a moment of quiet contemplation in the record store, Renee's gaze met Y/N's, and a playful smirk played on her lips. "You know," she said with a twinkle in her eye, "your interview made me curious. You mentioned appreciating someone's art without focusing on appearance. Do you always manage to separate the two?"
Y/N felt a flush of warmth creeping up their cheeks, realizing the subtle shift in the conversation. With a coy smile, they responded, "Well, I believe in appreciating the beauty in everything, whether it's in the artistry of music or… other things."
The air between them crackled with a newfound tension, and as they continued to explore the record store, the playful exchanges deepened into a more overt flirtation. A gentle touch on the arm here, a lingering gaze there—each gesture spoke volumes, creating an atmosphere charged with unspoken desire.
As they wrapped up their hangout, Y/N and Renee exchanged contact information, promising to meet again soon. The connection they forged went beyond the shared love for music, evolving into a magnetic attraction that lingered in the air, leaving both of them eager to explore the potential of this unexpected and thrilling connection.
In the days that followed their initial hangout, Y/N and Renee's connection deepened through playful messages and shared playlists. Their conversations became increasingly laced with flirtatious undertones, a dance of words that hinted at a mutual attraction.
One evening, Y/N received a message from Renee suggesting a joint songwriting session. The prospect of collaborating ignited a spark of excitement in Y/N, and they eagerly agreed. As they settled into the cozy ambiance of Y/N's home studio, surrounded by musical instruments and the gentle hum of creativity, the air seemed charged with both anticipation and a growing sense of intimacy.
As they worked on a new song, Y/N couldn't help but notice the subtle shifts in Renee's body language—the way she would lean in slightly, the lingering touches on shared instruments, and the occasional laughter that held a hint of something more. The energy between them was palpable, a magnetic force drawing them closer with each passing moment.
Renee, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, suggested taking a break and grabbing a snack from the kitchen.
As Y/N and Renee took a break in the cozy kitchen, the atmosphere crackled with a potent blend of creative energy and unspoken desire. The shared laughter and flirtatious banter lingered in the air, creating a magnetic pull that neither could ignore. Renee, feeling the palpable tension, decided to take a bold step.
As they stood near the kitchen island, discussing the finer details of their latest composition, Renee's gaze lingered on Y/N's lips. With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she leaned in, closing the distance between them and placing her hands on Y/N's waist. Time seemed to slow as Y/N felt the soft warmth of Renee's lips pressing against their own, and their back hitting the counter.
The kiss was electric, a spontaneous spark that ignited a fire between them. Y/N, momentarily stunned, soon reciprocated, their hands instinctively finding each other in a gentle embrace. The kitchen became a canvas for this unexpected moment, a dance of passion and shared connection against the backdrop of a creative haven.
Breaking the kiss, Renee grinned, her eyes filled with a mixture of playfulness and genuine affection. "Well, that was unexpected," she teased, her fingers gently tracing patterns on Y/N's arm.
Y/N, catching their breath, couldn't help but smile in response. "Glad you did it, Renee."
The shared laughter that followed sealed the moment, turning the kitchen into a haven where the boundaries between music and personal connection blurred. As they chatted over a plate of shared snacks, their knees brushed against each other under the table, creating a subtle yet electrifying connection. As they returned to their songwriting session, the newfound intimacy lingered, infusing their creative collaboration with an electrifying energy that promised more harmonies to come. The kitchen island, witness to the impromptu kiss, became a symbol of the uncharted territory their connection was now exploring.

Only You
:(( will miss wonwoo so much ♡
London had always been home to you.
The quiet hum of the city, the way the streets came alive in the evening glow, the blend of cultures, languages, and histories—it had all become second nature. You had built your life here, tucked away in a cozy corner of the bustling metropolis, where your dreams had taken shape in the form of a café.
And tonight, that dream had become real.
Your café’s soft opening had been a whirlwind. The day had been filled with excitement, nerves, and a steady stream of customers—some strangers drawn in by the warm glow of the space, others familiar faces who had supported you from the start. By the time the last guest had left, exhaustion clung to your bones, but so did a quiet sense of accomplishment.
You had done it.
With a deep breath, you wiped down the counter, already thinking about how nice it would be to finally rest. You reached for the last glassware left behind by your final customer, fingers curling around its cool surface—when suddenly, the bell above the door chimed.
Your brows furrowed. You were sure you had flipped the sign to Closed.
“We’re closed for the night,” you called out, barely looking up.
“I know.”
Your breath caught mid-motion.
That voice.
Slowly, you lifted your gaze—and there he was, standing in the doorway like something out of a dream.
Jeon Wonwoo.
Dressed in a sleek white coat, dark-rimmed glasses resting on his nose, and his usual unbothered expression softened by the glow of the café lights. His hair was slightly tousled from the London breeze, and in his eyes was something unreadable, something familiar yet distant.
You blinked, certain that your exhaustion was playing tricks on you.
“Wonwoo?” your voice came out softer than intended.
His lips quirked into a small, knowing smile. “Surprise.”
Your heart stuttered.
“What—how—?” You shook your head, trying to piece it together. “What are you doing here?”
“I had some time after Fashion Week,” he said simply, stepping closer. “Thought I’d drop by.”
Of course. Wonwoo had flown in for London Fashion Week, attending events, sitting front row at exclusive shows, his name appearing in articles alongside high-profile designers. You had seen the photos, the headlines—Jeon Wonwoo, the quiet but striking presence in the fashion world.
And yet, instead of being at some after-party, instead of indulging in the luxuries of the industry, he was here.
In your café.
“You should’ve told me,” you said, shaking your head, still processing his presence.
“That would’ve ruined the surprise.”
You exhaled, a laugh escaping your lips. “You and your surprises.”
Wonwoo just shrugged, his gaze never leaving yours.
Before you could say anything else, a familiar buzzing sound came from his phone. He glanced at the screen and sighed.
“It’s the guys,” he murmured before looking back at you. “Mind if I take this while you finish up?”
You smirked. “Go ahead. I’ll pretend I’m not eavesdropping.”
Leaning against the counter, he answered the call, and immediately, Seungkwan’s voice filled the quiet café.
“YAH! JEON WONWOO, YOU FINALLY PICKED UP!”
Wonwoo winced, pulling the phone slightly away from his ear. “Did you have to yell?”
“YES. BECAUSE YOU’VE BEEN IGNORING US.” Seungkwan narrowed his eyes before noticing the background. “Wait… where are you?”
Vernon appeared beside him, head tilting slightly. “Is that—” He turned to Seungkwan. “That’s her café, right?”
Seungkwan gasped dramatically. “OH MY GOD, YOU REALLY WENT STRAIGHT TO HER?”
Wonwoo sighed, unbothered. “Why do you sound so surprised?”
Vernon chuckled. “You skipped the after-party for this, didn’t you?”
Seungkwan smirked. “See? I told you he—”
Wonwoo ended the call.
You raised an eyebrow. “Wow. You really just hung up on them?”
“They’ll live.”
Shaking your head, you gestured toward a nearby seat. “Since you’re here, let’s catch up. But let me finish closing up first.”
⋆.˚ ☾⭒.˚
With the lights dimmed, the space felt warmer, cozier. You sat across from Wonwoo, both nursing cups of coffee—his black, yours slightly sweetened.
“It suits you,” he said suddenly, his voice cutting through the quiet.
You blinked. “What does?”
“This place.” His eyes roamed the café, taking in the warm-toned walls, the wooden bookshelves filled with novels for customers to read, the handwritten menu that still had tiny smudges from your last-minute edits. “You should be proud.”
A soft warmth bloomed in your chest.
“You think so?”
Wonwoo nodded, his gaze settling on you. “I know so.”
Something about the way he said it made your throat tighten.
You had always known Wonwoo to be reserved, careful with his words. He wasn’t one to offer empty praise or say things just for the sake of saying them. So when he did speak, when he said things like I know so, it meant he truly believed it.
A comfortable silence stretched between you. The playlist shifted, and the familiar melody of Only by Lee Hi began to play.
Wonwoo’s fingers tapped lightly against his cup before he looked at you, a small, almost mischievous smile forming.
“You know… we’ve never danced before.”
You raised an eyebrow. “And?”
“And I think we should change that.” He stood up, extending a hand. “Just one dance.”
“You’re serious?”
He nodded. “Completely.”
For a moment, you hesitated. But then, rolling your eyes, you sighed dramatically before slipping your hand into his.
“Fine. Just one.”
He pulled you close, his grip gentle yet firm. The song wrapped around you both, slow and yearning.
The café, once filled with movement and noise, had become something else entirely—just you and Wonwoo, moving in slow circles under the dim glow of the lights.
“This is nice” he murmured.
You hummed in agreement, your head resting lightly against his shoulder. “Yeah, it is.”
He closed his eyes for a moment, memorizing everything. The way your fingers curled slightly against his, the way your scent—familiar, comforting—lingered in the air.
So close, yet always just out of reach.
“You really missed this, huh?” you teased lightly.
His lips quirked up, but there was something softer in his gaze when he answered.
“Yeah,” he admitted. “I really did.”
And as the song played on, as you swayed together in the dimly lit café, Wonwoo wondered if you could hear what he had been trying to say all along.
That it had never been just the café.
Never just the city.
Never just the moment.
It had always been you.

any thoughts on the obsession with "hyperprocessed foods"? is there even such a thing and if so how much of the stuff around it is fake?
such a flawed useless categorisation lmao; this phrase comes from the nova scale, according to which an "ultra-processed food" is identified by a lack of sufficient "intact" food and the presence of "sources of energy and nutrients not normally used in culinary preparations" and additives specifically "used to initate or enhance the sensory qualities of food or to disguise unplatable aspects of the final product" (other additives, such as preservatives, antioxidants, and stabilisers, only qualify a food as group 3, "processed"). ultra-processing is defined as "a multitude of sequences of processing [...] includ[ing] several with no domestic equivalents," and ultra-processed foods are "usually packaged attractively and marketed intensely."
......so ok, first of all, this is very obviously reliant on a lot of assumptions about what 'normal' cooking and cooking equipment means, lmao. i do all kinds of shit in the kitchen that would have been inaccessible to someone in the mid nineteenth century; has the food become 'less processed' because i can make it at home now? if i obtained the equipment to hydrogenate oils myself would they magically not be ultra-processed simply because they came from my kitchen and not from an industrial setting?
this is just quasi-scientific language to express a fundamental distrust of food produced in ways that currently can't be replicated in [researchers' definitions of] a [normal] home kitchen. it's barely more sophisticated than platitudes like michael pollan's command to "eat only foods your grandmother would recognise". using the nova classifications to make assumptions about the healthfulness or danger of a food is just silly; the presumption is that the dietary and medical effects are not due to the food itself but to how it's produced, an idea that has led researchers to conclude that "the NOVA system suffers from a lack of biological plausibility so the assertion that ultra-processed foods are intrinsically unhealthful is largely unproven."
fundamentally the only evidence that nutritional scientists have been able to produce is observational studies showing a correlation between certain ill health outcomes and consumption of 'ultra-processed food'.
But the observational studies also have limitations, said Lauren O’Connor, a nutrition scientist and epidemiologist who formerly worked at the Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health. It’s true that there is a correlation between these foods and chronic diseases, she said, but that doesn’t mean that UPFs directly cause poor health.
Dr. O’Connor questioned whether it’s helpful to group such “starkly different” foods — like Twinkies and breakfast cereals — into one category.
[...]
Clinical trials are needed to test if UPFs directly cause health problems, Dr. O’Connor said. Only one such study, which was small and had some limitations, has been done, she said.
ie, when evaluating the healthfulness of foods you have to actually look at what they are and what the human body does with them, and not just make a bunch of wild assumptions based on fears about their lack of proximity to 'naturalness' or propensity to be advertised (unlike, i guess, other more intact foods, which are not commodities. who knew!)
and there are like a million trillion other reasons why this correlation might hold: off the top of my head, for instance, people who rely more on the convenience of ready-made foods likely to be categorised as 'ultra-processed' are likely to be people who can't cook because they don't have time because they're working. so as usual nutrition and health science does a dogshit job distinguishing between the health effects of socioeconomic status and those of whatever some dickwad wants to publish a splashy study about.
there are certainly 'ultra-processed' foods that we can be extremely confident are harmful to human health---for example, trans fats. but the categorisation as a whole is so conceptually flawed as to be useless for any purpose besides as a term that 'scientises' culturally held beliefs about the wholesomeness and healthfulness of home food preparation, and the corresponding danger and artificiality of industrial production and methods.

Hi! I really like your other takes on Underdark races, and wanted to ask if you had any thoughts on improving grimlocks? Beyond the permanent blindness they have and the whole being humans who adapted to the underdark, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot else done with them.

Monsters Reimagined: Grimlocks
Would it surprise anyone to learn that a d-list d&d monster has It's roots in 1800s ideas about eugenics and bad adaptations of genre fiction? No? Then you've been paying attention, top marks.
Asker is absolutely right in their assessment that there's not really much to grimlocks. They're one of many "hostile tribal primitives" that have filled out the monster roster ever since the original developers lifted them en mass from the pulp adventure stories they grew up reading.
A common theme among these pulp works and the early scifi that inspired it was devolution, the idea that a people could degrade from greatness back into an animistic nature. The most well known pop culture example would be HP lovecraft's deep ones, where the author's fears of race mixing manifest as monsters that literally push humanity back down the evolutionary ladder to the stage of fish.
There's plenty of different ways to explain the origin of this writing trend, but I like to chalk it up to an anxiety resulting from the widespread acceptance of Darwin's theory of evolution by a society that believed wholeheartedly in scientific racism. If intelligence (read: whiteness) wasn't just a god given right but was infact inheritable, then it could also be disinherited, bred out of a population whether by on purpose or by accident. This made it so important to practice good breeding (read: eugenics), to preserve the pure stock from falling to degeneracy (read: miscegenation) and introducing undesirable traits into the genepool.
We can see fear this with grimlocks, humanoids who were inherently lessened by their "adaptation" to life underground, losing their intelligence and eyesight and descending into a state of barbarism. Given that this is one of the few d&d monsters that mention evolution at all, we can trace this feature to their likely inspiration: The morlocks in H.G. Wells' Time machine, published a scant 36 years after Darwin published The Origin of Species.
I'm not well read enough to know whether Wells pioneered the idea of subhuman descendants, but I can say that most of his imitators missed the point of his writing: Wells saw in his day an increasingly indolent upper class inflicting brutal and dehumanizing labour conditions on the poor to support their own carefree lifestyle. He satirized this in his book by showing that while the descendants of the rich had devolved into beautiful, useless, idiots, the descendants of the workers devolved into subterranean ape-things who maintained the machinery that allowed the eden like existence of the rich while farming them for meat. Say what you will about Wells' race politics (Neither degenerate fop or inbred ape can withstand the smarts and strength of the enlightened colonial Englishman) but his writing was specifically class continuous, and the brutality of the morlocks was a direct result of the exploitation of working people in his own day and age.
When the morlocks were adapted into the grimlocks , the d&d writers kept their canibalistic streak but specifically removed their class based origins as well as their mechanical knowhow. This is a near identical process to what happened with a creature the worlocks helped inspire: Tolkien's orcs, which were likewise turned from a commentary on the brutality of the industrial age into warlike primitives. It's a bit of a trend.
If you wanted to "fix" the grimlocks I'd go one of two ways:
If you want to engage with themes of primality, make them legit underdark dwelling primates/australopithecus type of creatures, just figuring out tool use and language. Make the rumours of them being descended from cave-exploring humanoids a common myth made up by surface dwellers.
If you want to get spicy about it though, give them back their mechanical aptitude and maybe mix in a few more dashes of pulp "lost civilization" ancient aliens nonsense. Have them dwell in great mechanical complexes beneath the earth, worker drones who've long outlived the creatures that enslaved them and scribed mechanical knowledge into their very being. Originally denied understanding of the machines they toiled to build, work, and maintain, the grimlocks jealously guard the science they've spent generations reverse engineering, giving them the reputation of being violently territorial for those underdark travelers who venture too close to the megastructures they inhabit.
