The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee Kickstarts Deluxe Blu-ray Edition

The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee mixes traditional documentary with a dash of fantasy. It is narrated by Christopher Lee himself... in the form of an elaborate marionette, voiced by Peter Serafinowicz. The marionette was custom designed and built by Arch Model Studios, who made all of the puppets for Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs and Asteroid City and Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. 

The film combines new, exclusive interviews with filmmakers, including Peter Jackson, John Landis and Joe Dante, friends and family members with animated flights of fantasy from a wide variety of artists including 2000AD's Simon Coleby, award winning stop-motion animator Astrid Goldsmith and the legendary illustrator Dave McKean who directed, scored and animated a whole chapter of the film himself. 

Spanning eight decades and almost three hundred films, Christopher Lee became famous for his iconic performance as Dracula. But he was so much more than just the Hammer Horror roles he is so fondly remembered for. His career took him from uncredited parts in 1950s swashbucklers with Errol Flynn, through famous performances in 007 and Star Wars films, cult hits like The Wicker Man and The Return of Captain Invincible, right up to a lead role in cinema's biggest event - The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Along the way, he worked with everyone from Orson Welles to Mario Bava, Jess Franco, Tim Burton, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. 

Yet his story is so much richer than just his career. Lee was born into Italian aristocracy, with a military career shrouded in secrecy and kept his private life closely guarded. Some of his ventures and adventures seem highly improbable yet, as the film reveals, he often found himself in unexpected situations - he witnessed the last ever death by guillotine, was cousins with 007 creator Ian Fleming, he met Tolkien, performed with the classic Saturday Night Live line-up, was a friend and neighbour of Boris Karloff, he was the oldest person to ever get on the Billboard music charts (with his own Heavy Metal album), was an expert knife thrower, professional opera singer and a Nazi hunter. And somehow, he also managed to appear in almost 300 films of both the highest and lowest quality imaginable. 

The film is finished and producers Jon Spira and Hank Starrs want to share it with you by producing a top quality Blu-Ray with great extra features and a really amazing LIMITED/NUMBERED EDITION COFFIN-SHAPED BOX SET, full of goodies, which will look killer on the shelf of any discerning cineaste. The jewel in the crown of this box-set will be a 3D 'death mask' of Christopher Lee designed and produced by Arch Model Studio exclusively for this set. They also want to host some screenings - both online and in real cinemas - so we can all experience it together and you can get to meet some of the people behind it.

Making this film has been a fascinating journey - producers excavated the British Film Institute archives where they hold Lee's personal collection of scrapbooks detailing his career in his own hand, been given access to personal photos from the family archive, they met and interviewed his closest friends and family from all over the world and we've worked with some incredible artists, puppeteers, animators, musicians and filmmakers to bring his story to the screen in the most cinematic way. Whether you're a fan of Horror, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or just cinema history in general, we think you'll be delighted by this revealing and eclectic documentary.

Risks and challenges

The film is fully edited and ready to go. This Kickstarter is to fund the final bits of post-production and the production of a fantastic Blu-ray and deluxe collectors edition box set as we're all still committed to physical media. WoD5: The Nanny edition?

This is brief, but I wanted to rant about this. Why the heck is WoD5 so obsessed with limiting who the players can play? I mean, ironically I get CoF not being playable because the devs are using them as neo-nazi. But the Second Inquisition and the Sabbat? The players in V5 are already playing horrid bloodsucking creatures that manipulate people. That they are trying to be more human doesn't hide that they are very much not. The Sabbat might not try to be human, but they are not worse than Anarch or Camarilla, just more open with their actions. And the Second Inquisition? They are trying to get rid of the bloodsucking monsters. In Hunter 5, any sort of highly organized hunter group is also deemed unplayable. For as flimsy of a reason. They are The Man, they don't care about the hunt, they try to make money from the monsters, etc. Yet the PCs aren't limited to being just morally pure angels. In W5, a group of werewolves taking the fight to the Wyrm full-time is basically painted as neo-nazi. Even though the allowed tribes include cannibalism, chemical warfare, dictatorship and city council members. It feels like WoD5 is trying to decide morality for the players and not allowing any shades of gray at all.

One thing I actually really liked about The Crystal Skull, despite all its issues, was Indy’s complete disillusionment with the US Government, and how it is implied it’s not only due to the rising anti-communist bullshit, but all the stuff he saw about what the US would actually do with anything it got its grubby huge imperialist mitts on during WWII. The atom bomb being the biggest and most utterly horrifying, ofc, but it is implied there were plenty of others.

What I’m saying is that we deserve a series about Indy et al working undercover during WWII to deal with, steal and destroy the various occult horrors the Nazis stole and are attempting to use as the war goes against them, and how he realises the Allied governments, esp the US, are not actually safe hands to put them in either.

Maybe a lot of that is in flashback while in 1960s or 1970s he helps someone like Simon Weithenstal hunt down a Nazi in South America who is on the trail of some occult artefact he thinks could be used to restore the Reich? And running into CIA-led US imperialism while he’s there?

It would need to be incredibly well-written, and probably actively anti-Zionist too, but I think it could be absolutely incredible.

Though honestly about the only person I’d trust to write it would be Ruthanna Emrys, given their *superb*, *note-perfect* take on the Cthulhu Mythos in The Innsmouth Legacy books.

Republican lawmakers in Texas want to create a state security force to patrol the US-Mexico border that critics have characterised as a "vigilante death squad policy."

Dade Phelan, the Republican speaker of Texas' House of Representatives, told a meeting of the Texas Public Policy Foundation that he plans to introduce a bill that he says will "make national headlines and change the conversation on border security," according to The Intercept.

The bill — House Bill 20 — would allow Texas' Department of Public Safety to hunt, arrest, and deport undocumented migrants.

The group would be comprised of law enforcement officers and civilians under the direction of a governor-selected chief. The members of the group would also be extended immunity from criminal prosecution relating to their actions on the border. They will be directed to "arrest, detain, and deter individuals crossing the border illegally including with the use of non-deadly force."

The group will also apparently be authorised to "use force to repel, arrest, and detain known transnational cartel operatives in the border region."

A piece of companion legislation would make undocumented entry into Texas a state crime, with first-time offenders subject to a year in prison, two years in prison for second-time offenders, and life in prison for individuals with prior felony convictions.

Democrats in Texas are opposed to the bill, likening the legislation to a "vigilante death squads policy."

“This dangerous, radical, and unconstitutional proposal which empowers border vigilantes to hunt migrants and racially profile Latinos is going to result in the death of innocent people,” Victoria Neave Criado, the Democratic chair of Mexican American Legislative Caucus, said in a statement last week. “MALC is going to do everything in our power to kill this legislation just as Latino State Representatives for the past 5 decades have fought against Klan-like proposals.”

Mr. Phelan anticipated the opposition, and claimed he was prepared to take the matter to the conservative-majority Supreme Court if Democrats challenge the law.

This isn't the first time the state has tried to create a border protection force beyond the federal US Customs and Border Protection agency. In 2021 Republican Governor Greg Abbott initiated "Operation Lone Star" that placed National Guard troops at the border. However, the $4bn endeavor was met with numerous controversies, including the deaths of several National Guard members, some to suicide, and allegations of human rights violations that resulted in a Justice Department investigation.

The operation has shown no notable difference in the rate of undocumented border crossings or transnational drug trafficking.

If the case is challenged and successfully survives a Supreme Court ruling, it would change the way all border states could police the southern border.

And I would confidently say that Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal falls into this category, a legend whom the world lost 17 years ago, today.

As soon as Wisenthal’s health was sufficiently restored after the Holocaust, he began gathering and preparing evidence on Nazi atrocities for the War Crimes Section of the United States Army. He continued his salaried relief and welfare work, including the running of an occupational training school for Hungarian and other Iron Curtain refugees. However, his involvement in locating and capturing Adolf Eichmann, a high-ranking SS officer and one of the Holocaust’s chief organizers is highly notable.

Encouraged by the capture of Eichmann, Wiesenthal reopened the Jewish Documentation Center, this time in Vienna, and concentrated exclusively on the hunting of war criminals - bringing them to justice and honouring the millions of victims’ lives lost because of them. As we approach Rosh HaShana and begin thinking of the year ahead, we should draw inspiration from those whose legacies outlived them and how we can build and create our own legacies.
