Artist Research - Johan Lithvall

Johan Lithvall is a hair specialist currently working as a hair consultant for Epic Games MetaHuman initiative. With a significant experience in the industry, through out others, Johan has worked on games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and The Walking Dead.

Among clothes, hair is another element that defines a character. A realistic hair groom and simulation can bring realism of the character to a new level.

As one of the best hair specialists in the industry, Johan has been invited to many podcasts and webinars in which he explains his workflow and process to achieve realistic hair for games. He also debates the hair cards and xGen workflow for current games.

Moreover, he is one of the mentors from the Vertex School with a long waitlist. His mentorship consists in eight weeks in which you learn about the philosophy behind hair cards, how to use them and get in depth knowledge about the pipeline to Unreal Engine.

Besides his mentorship at Vertex, he also has his own course on CGMA in which he discusses how to master the art of AAA hair. Because of it's advanced level, the course is quite expensive. However, there are 80.lv articles such as the one from Jeff Hansen, in which they explain what they have learned from the course and their experience.

I will use these types of articles, together with the interviews and podcasts with Johan Lithvall, in order to have a better understanding of the hair grooming pipeline for games. Even if the characters from my project have a minimal amount of hair, I have always wanted to start exploring this area and it as one of my skills.
