Anaesthesia | Neil Melendez | The Good Doctor
Tumblr media
Doctors, especially surgeons, know the side effects of surgeries like the back of their hands; they have too. The effects of anaesthesia are also commonly known, however they are not usually witnessed or enjoyed by the operating surgeon or anyone on their surgical staff. They tended to check in with the patient thoroughly after the majority of the medication had worn off and had been replaced with morphine.
It had been a while since Neil had experienced it first hand, it was something he swore to himself that he would change. In the beginning he had been worried when (y/n) had to go in for emergency surgery, their appendix had burst. Now, he couldn't help himself from giggling at them whilst encouraging their drug induced antics.
"You're really pretty, you know that right?" They slurred, trying to maintain eye contact with him.
Neil smiled. "Thank you, Dr. (l/n)."
"It is very, very, very, important to me that you know that." They watched as he just laughed alongside them as they continued their rambling. "I don't feel normal."
His smiled dropped.
"`What doesn't feel normal; what's wrong?"
(y/n) pondered his question for a moment, letting the silence thickly drag in the air. They didn't understand the gravity of their declaration and the million thoughts that were rushing through Neil's head. What if the surgery had gone wrong? What if they were experiencing complications and they had to go back under? What if they-?
"I know what it is."
Melendez looked up expectantly.
"I'm cold, I need cuddles."
"Cuddles?" he ask incredulously. (y/n) just nodded their head as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. At this, his worried seem to vanish in a flash and he moved so he could position himself at (y/n)'s side. "Well, who am I do deny a patient."

Melendez x reader - a chance
Tumblr media
Could I get a Dr. Melendez x reader? The reader is shy, quiet, short, and chubby and she is shocked when he asks her out. She is his age and is a nurse. - Anon💜
Standing next to the desk, you crouched down, smiling at the little girl who has run over to you.
“My mommy wants ice chips, can I have ice chips?” She asked.
“Absolutely, you can both have some.”
The girl grinned from ear to ear and followed you to get the two cups, and you walked her back to her moms room, smiling at the woman.
“I’m sorry, I told her not to ask.”
“You don’t have to worry, it’s what it’s there for, and we’ve got more than enough to share. Do you need anything else?”
The woman shook her head and you smiled as you left her room, heading back to the nurses station.
Humming to yourself, you began to wonder in and out of every room to make sure that everybody was doing okay before writing it all in their files.
“Alright, I’m done, I’m going home.”
“See you later (Y/N).” The other nurse smiled.
Smiling back, you headed to grab you things before making your way towards the stairs.
You looked at the time and sighed to yourself, you were hungry, but you were also tired and didn’t know what you wanted to do first.
If you napped, you could eat later, but you thought maybe eating first would be the best idea.
While you were walking down the stairs, you heard someone fall in line with you and you snapped out of your head, looking towards the side.
“Oh Doctor Melendez, is everything alright? Do you need something?” You asked.
“I just saw you leaving and thought I’d walk out with you if that’s alright?” He asked.
You nodded your head and turned away from him.
“Thank you for doing the rounds on my patients before going, I’d still be here if it weren’t for that.” He chuckled a little.
“You were supposed to go home hours ago, I thought it would help speed up the process after your meeting.”
“Well, it’s much appreciated. Thank you.”
You smiled at him.
Generally doctors didn’t do much with nurses, or interact with them.
In a way Melendez was the same, but you were usually in all of his surgeries, and generally on the same shifts as him so he soon became a familiar face.
Though it wasn’t often that the pair of you talked, not unless it was about work.
Stepping outside, you looked at your phone before walking over stepping to the side of the door, trying to stay out of the rain.
“You aren’t heading home?” Melendez asked.
“Waiting for the bus.”
He looked around before looking at you.
“I can give you a lift if you want, it’s no trouble.”
“I’ll be alright, thanks though.”
He nodded his head and began to leave, offering you once again a lift which you declined.
You did notice a few over the following few weeks how he would talk to you more often, walk you out of the building and sometimes wait for your bus with you.
You didn’t think much about it, you put it down to him needed to get to know his surgical team more, or maybe he was trying to interact with people more.
You weren’t sure.
But you didn’t mind chatting with him, sometimes you would even see him at the bar after work, or the pair of you would walk there together.
So, when you were having lunch you didn’t think twice about him coming over to sit with you.
Smiling you moved your things aside so he could sit in front of you.
“Doctor Melendez.” You greeted.
“You can call me Neil, or just Melendez.” He laughed.
“I know.”
He smiled at you, taking a sip from his coffee.
You went back to eating, the pair of you holding a small conversation as you did.
“Can I ask you something?” He asked.
“You just did.”
You smiled at him as he chuckled.
“Of course you can. What’s up?”
“Would you be open to possibly going on a date with me?”
You nearly dropped your cup, and you quickly set it down as you stared at him in shock.
“I’m sorry?”
“Would you go on a date with me? Maybe dinner? It a few drinks? A movie?”
You took a small breath to compose yourself.
“I… you.. you’re asking me on a date..?”
Melendez smiled softly at you.
“I am.”
“Why?”
He laughed gently.
“Because I think you’re interesting, and beautiful, and smart, and I want to get to know you better.”
You slowly nodded your head, and you stood up from the table.
“I have to go..”
With that you rushed away.
You knew he wouldn’t bring it up while you were both on shift, but during any breaks or when you weren’t all that busy you did everything you could to avoid him.
So when it came for you last break of the day, you decided to head up to the roof to watch the nightlife of the city.
It was peaceful, and gave you time to think.
You heard steps coming closer and you turned around, sighing heavily as you watched the man walk over to you.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have sprung that on you. I shouldn’t have said anything at all, I understand.”
“No.. you don’t have to be sorry..”
You sighed, resting your arms on the rail.
“It’s not.. I mean I’m flattered you asked, I really am..”
“If you’re not interested that’s alright, you don’t have to explain yourself to me. I just hope we can stay friends.”
You looked at him.
“I.. I am interested, believe me I am.”
Melendez furrowed his brows a little bit, and he turned to fully face you.
“You are?”
“Yes. I just.. it’s.. I don’t think it’s a good idea…”
“Can I ask why?”
“You’re you.. and I.. I’m me..”
He rose a brow and you looked away from him, burying your nose into your jacket.
“You’re athletic, and incredibly good looking and successful. I’m me, anything but that, and I can’t even afford a car.”
“I don’t care you can’t afford a car, or that I’m a doctor and you’re a nurse. I think you’re beautiful the way you are, and I would love for the chance to show you that.”
You didn’t reply and he sighed a little, coming over he stood next to you, looking at you.
“You’re the most kind and understanding person k have ever met. I watched you listen to a patient just out of surgery explain to you hundreds of times how they broke their arm and you listened just as enthusiastically as the last time.”
You smiled at the memory.
“He was so high.” You laughed.
“He was.” Melendez chuckled.
You turned to look at him, and he smiled softly, placing his hand on the side of your face.
“I just want the chance to show you how incredible you are, and I’d you don’t want that, it’s alright.”
You sighed a little, and you looked at him.
You had always debated asking him out, but you were always so scared too.
But you looked as the city lights reflected in eyes, and how he smiled so softly at you, and it made your heart skip a beat, made you feel butterflies in your stomach.
“How about dinner?” You asked.
Melendez smiled even more.
“It’s a date, we’ll go after this shift.”
He leant down and kissed your head before he rushed away before anyone started to look for him.
Smiling to yourself, you turned back to watching the city

Warnings: period talk
Summary: You're on your period and Neil offers you a little comfort when he sees you're having a bad day.
Words: 2.2k
Pairing: Neil Melendez x Doctor!reader
A/N: It's ridiculous how much time I wasted searching for a gif and still ending up unsatisfied. But for some reason when I search for gifs on tumblr for my writing I just get reaction memes these days. It's so annoying! Anyway, this was requested. I hope you like it and it's the way you imagined :) I really want to write more again, because it felt so good to just sit down and start typing, but life is so busy at the moment and both my physical and mental health aren't so great too! Hopefully it will all get better soon :)
Tumblr media
You should have known it would be ‘one of those days’ when you walked into work with a belly ache, but you didn’t think much of it, hoping if you just ignored it the pain would eventually go away.
Only it didn’t. Instead it got worse, spreading into your lower back and making it hard to keep standing. All you wanted to do was sit or lie down and not move anymore, perhaps even curl over until the pain faded.
But you were on shift, the ER was buzzing and the hospital was understaffed. Sighing you grabbed the next patient’s file, scanning it quickly as you made your way over to where he was seated. Too late you realized someone was crossing your way and you bumped right into them, startling at the unexpected contact.
“Sorry!” You took a step back and glanced up at the man dressed in the blue scrubs, relieved but also a little nervous to find it was Neil Melendez. The two of you got along well, so well that it made you hope he would eventually ask you out.
But he hadn’t yet and you didn’t have the heart to do it yourself, fearing the humiliation of a rejection since you would have to keep working together.
Neil teased you and he flirted with you, but that didn’t have to mean anything. He was naturally charming. Still you hoped for the moment to come, your heart always losing its steady rhythm for a second when you laid eyes on him.
“It’s nothing.” He smiled at you and you tried to reciprocate it, but a sharp pain in your belly made your face twist in pain instead. “Well, I should get going”, you said once the pain had ebbed a little, but you didn’t make it far as Neil held you back by your elbow.
“You okay?” His brows were knitted and he watched you with a frown, his eyes darting over your face before he locked eyes with you again. You drew in a breath, tensing a little at the proximity and trying to ignore your galloping heart.
“Yeah, I’m fine”, you brushed it off, this time managing a smile. You saw Neil slightly narrow his eyes at you, but before he could say anything else you offered him a nod and hurried away.
-
You had never looked so much forward to your break, the imagination of finally sitting down and eating a meal keeping you going for the rest of the morning. But just as you handed over your last patient’s file, planning to head to the cafeteria, a voice called you back.
It was Dr. Lim. She was marching over to you and you could tell from her face she wanted something from you.
Not now.
“What is it?”, you asked, once she came to stand beside you, not hiding your frustration. The other doctor looked at you surprised, before holding an iPad out to you. “The imaging and report from Mr. Wellington’s CT just came in.”
You let your eyes flicker over it, not finding anything worth this fuss. “And?”, you asked, sounding as impatient as you felt to get held back. “That’s what I thought too”, Audrey continued unbothered, “but then I found this.” She used her fingers to zoom in on it.
“See this shadow?”
You squinted your eyes. “Could be anything.” “Right, but it looks like a small tumour. I already ran a biopsy. The results should be in soon.”
You glanced up at her, waiting for her to come to the point. When she didn’t say more you sighed. “So? Why are you showing me this?”
“Okay-“, Audrey snapped the iPad’ case shut, handing it over to the nurse’s desk, “Someone’s in a mood today!”
You winced under her glare, regretting how harsh you had sounded. It wasn’t her fault you were having a bad day and she didn’t deserve your attitude. “Sorry.”
You closed your eyes and took a deep inhale, trying to push away your annoyance. You really didn’t want to argue with Audrey today. Especially not over something stupid like this.
“It’s just-” You opened your eyes again, gesturing at the busy ER. “-My back is killing me and I have the worst cramps and I just want to lay down and suffer in silence.”
You let out a chuckle at your dramatic words and the way they came out as if they had been at the tip of your tongue only waiting to slip out, which probably wasn’t far from the truth, and Audrey offered you a sympathetic smile. “That time of the month?”
You nodded, surprised that you didn’t feel embarrassed to talk about it with her. Audrey always seemed so strong and unbothered and you couldn’t imagine her whining over a stupid period. But she seemed to know exactly what you were talking about.
“The mood swings are the worst for me. You might know I’m not the most patient person out there-”, you grinned, thinking of the many incidents she had proven what a short temper she coud have, “but during that time? You really don’t want to pick a fight with me then!”
You laughed. It was just too easy to imagine. “I bet Melendez and Andrews have made that mistake.” Audrey’s face lit up. “Oh, trust me they have!” She shook her head, smiling. “And they learn from it.”
“As they should”, you nodded, “at least they don’t have to attempt 12-hour shifts while it feels like their insides get twisted inside-out.”
Audrey laid her hand on your lower arm, squeezing lightly. “Ibuprofen’s your best friend. And if you ever need to take a break and lay down just tell me.”
You felt a lump forming in your throat and you had to will back your tears. Damn hormones! “Thank you.” You hoped she could hear how sincere you were, the thought of having an escape providing you with relief strong enough to give you a little energy back.
“We women have to stick together.” Audrey squeezed your arm again, before retreating and you looked after her for a moment, grateful to have a friend in her.
-
When you had finally made it to the cafeteria, your pager had gone off right as it had been your turn to order. “You can’t be serious”, you muttered as you pulled it out and read it. “Hey, are you going to order or what?”, you heard someone ask behind you, but without another word you took off, praying you would make it to your patient in time.
Luckily you had. But afterwards you had been pulled right into another case and before you knew it, it had grown dark outside and your stomach was growling at you.
The cafeteria was long closed and so you got a chocolate bar from the vending machine, promising yourself to get real food once you were off the clock.
The ER had quietened down as it often did at the end of your shift and since you had never taken your break you allowed yourself a moment to take a breath in the resident’s lounge.
Although you weren’t a resident anymore you still liked to come here. Perhaps it was the closeness to Neil’s office or the quiet it provided at the end of the day when the residents had all gone home. There was no one who could tell you off as you curled up on the sofa.
The chocolate tasted heavily in your mouth and you devoured it until the last crumb. “You look like you just fell in love.”
“Huh?” You glanced up, to find Neil at the door, casually entering the room and coming to stand in front of you.
He gestured towards the wrapper you had placed on the table. “The chocolate.”
Oh. You let out a chuckle as you realized you had stared at it longingly while you had contemplated whether it was reasonable to get up and get another one or if it wasn’t worth the effort it would take to search for a vending machine.
“That was probably the best chocolate I’ve ever had”, you declared and Neil chuckled. “Your standards are very low then.” You tried to look offended but failed. “Don’t speak ill of the vending machines. They are real life savers. And it’s been a tough day.”
You said it lightly, but you saw Neil’s jaw twitch at the last part. “What happened?”
He walked over to where you were sitting and you shuffled to the side to make space for him. He leaned against the armrest, his body angled towards yours. “Nothing I-”
But suddenly tears were clouding your eyes as all the emotions you had bottled up threatened to spill over. “Damn it!” You wiped at your eyes before the tears could spill, feeling your cheeks heat up in embarrassment.
You didn’t need to look at Neil’s face to see the worry on it.
“Sorry”, you let out an embarrassed chuckle and Neil smiled at you softly. “I’m usually not this emotional. It’s been a long day that’s all.”
“You have had longer ones and didn’t bat an eye.” It wasn’t an accusation, only genuine confusion on Neil’s part and your heart swelled at the hidden compliment and how much he cared to understand you.
“Yeah”, you muttered, closing your eyes as another cramp hit you. When you opened them again you hoped your face hadn’t betrayed you and given away your discomfort, but the disadvantage at working so closely together was that Neil could read you by now.
Before he could make any wild guesses, you decided to just tell him the truth.
You didn’t have to be embarrassed about it, shouldn’t feel that way, yet it was easier said than done. You didn’t want him to think you couldn’t take the hardships of the job, that you were weak or dramatic. But even as you thought it you knew Neil would never think that of you.
Or anyone.
He wasn’t like that, wasn’t intimidated by strong willed women or the reality of what it was like to be one.
Taking a long inhale and an even longer exhale you looked up at him. “I got my period this morning and I’ve been in pain all day.” Now that you had gotten the words out you suddenly had the urge to let it all out.
“And my back is like- so bad. But the cramps are the worst. And I snapped at Audrey. And then again at Glassman. And I almost bawled my eyes out when my patient made it out of surgery and his wife came to see him. And this-”, you gestured at yourself, “is the first break I have gotten all day and I don’t think I’m ever gonna stand up again.”
You stared at Neil in shock for a moment as you realized what had just happened, but then you let out a laugh. “Wow and that just came out like one long sentence!”
Neil chuckled in amusement. “That seems like a really crappy day”, he agreed and you nodded in relief that he seemed to take it serious. “Right? I mean, there are worse things, obviously, but still-” You clutched your belly again, letting out a hiss of pain.
When you looked back up Neil had shifted closer to you, his frown back in place. “Why didn’t you call in sick?”
“Really?” You shook your head, amused and a little frustrated. “I can’t just call in sick every month.”
“It’s this bad every month?”
You nodded. “Most of the time, yeah. Sometimes it’s better, other’s it’s worse. But that’s just how it is.”
Neil face twisted, clearly displeased with what you had said or the situation, perhaps both. “It shouldn’t be like that”, he said then and you looked at him for a moment, taking in his sincerity. “I mean, yeah”, you agreed after a moment. “What, you want to change the whole system now?”
Neil’s mouth curled up in the hint of a smile. “Not tonight, no. I have better plans.”
Your face fell a little as you felt a hint of disappointment at his words. Maybe he was just hanging out with friends or visiting his sister you tried to reason. But the thought of him having plans with another woman gnawed at you.
“Really? What could be better than that?”, you asked teasingly and he tipped his head towards you. “Someone needs to show you what real chocolate tastes like.”
Oh. Your hope arose so strongly you almost forgot to breathe for a moment. “And my sofa is even more comfortable than this one.” He patted the couch you were seated on, not breaking eye contact once.
You still looked at him in shock, unable to form words as you processed his. “You’re baiting me with chocolate?”, you asked once the shock had faded a little, cautious not to put too much weight into his words and Neil grinned. “I do give great massages too. I cook. And I have a big movie collection to distract you from, you know, the pain and all that.”
You smiled widely at him. “Now that wins me over”, you stated, although the thought of spending time alone with Neil was already enough. But it didn’t make his promises less appealing. And it made you feel warm inside to know how much he cared and that he had put so much thought into what he could do to make you feel better.
“Great.” He stood up. “So it’s a date?” For the first time he sounded nervous and it made your heart flutter to know it was because of you. That this, whatever it was between you, mattered to him too.
“It’s a date.”

Please this is my first ever imagine, be kind. Also my English it’s not perfect, my second language, but I’m trying. Thank you!
Finding love when you’re not expecting
You worked in the management department of the hospital, you never talk with a lot of people, especially men. You got two girls in you office to be friends with and it was enough, you search for a job a long time and it’s good to finally be at peace with one.
The thing is, nothing can be good for to long and you got a crush on someone you couldn’t even get to talk to, that would be dr. Neil Melendez. He was so charismatic, handsome, nice and fun, but not for you. You were not a doctor, not even a nurse so you could not be around him as much as you would like to. But still you would look at him, without anyone noticing, at lunch were he would stay with his residents and laugh, you loved his laugh, it was so contagious.
Today was a good day, you felt good about you, you’re outfit and you’re hair, something very rare for you, but maybe the people you surround with are doing good. When you walk in the hospital you saw him, just getting in, handsome as always and he was actually keeping the elevator door for you, that’s really lucky, especially when it’s your good day.
- “Hi, I’m Neil.” His eyes were so beautiful and his smile, you could have fainted right away.
- “Hello, dr. Melendez, I’m Y/N.” If it wouldn’t be that wall of the elevator, you would be down. You try to keep your cool, it’s just a man and it’s nothing to be worried about. You’re amazing and also waiting for this chance since your got hired 5 month ago.
-“ How is this fair? You know me but I don’t know you? We should change that.” He was laughing, around you and it was nice, you felt nice to be around him, something you didn’t feel around a man in a long time.
- “Well, you’re a doctor, I should know you if I need one around, right?” You were joking, who were you? And how you got this nerve to flirt back with the man you’ve been dreaming about.
-“That’s sound fair, I think we should meet at lunch, 12 o’clock, at your usual table.” And he just left, the doors opened and he left just like that. You were in shock and also didn’t get the part about the table, how does he knows about your usual table? Would it be that he looked at you too? But you didn’t want to get your expectations high or your heart broken.
You got to your office and just stayed for a few minutes enjoying this beautiful event, for you it was amazing to communicate and find the courage to have a conversation with Neil, you don’t know him that well, but from the moment you saw him you had this feeling in your chest that wouldn’t go and when his not around you have the same feeling. You tried to ignore it but what if it’s true? What if he likes you too?
You didn’t have so much work to do until lunch break but still the clock won’t move, it was so annoying and also you were a little scared that he wouldn’t show up, maybe a patient or maybe he will forget. Quickly you wave those thoughts and let the happiness come again, you’re beautiful, smart and amazing, if he doesn’t show up it’s his loss, not yours. He wanted to have lunch with you not the other way around.
After so many hours, only 4 but it’s felt like 24, you were in the cafeteria, at your usual table, with just a coffee and a slice of banana bread because that’s the only thing that you can eat before you would know what he has to say or if he ever shows up.
He did showed up. You see him coming in your direction and it’s feeling so good to finally got to meet the man you were staring at.
“- Hi, again. I’m so happy you got the time to come meet me up” please don’t smile at me like that, that’s you re only thought when you’re looking at him. Who could resist this man? Not you, for sure.
“- Thank you for the invite, I didn’t think you would be interested in spending time with me.” And you didn’t it, you were to honest to soon and you think this will freak him out and live.
“- Why not? You might be the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. And I know you’re interested too.” That was a shock, him saying those words you only heard never in your life from a man, but from him? Was this a dream? Or a joke? But wait, why would he think you’re interested? Yea you are, but why would he think you are? Let’s try to play the game.
“- Why would I be interested?” And he smiled at you, but the most charming smile he has and you didn’t think he would do that, but he pulled your chair like it was nothing, his shirt almost torn from his flexed muscles and he was so close to you.
“- This game would be fun to play but I assure you, I can feel the way you look at me, the way you want me to be with you doing everything you dream of.” He was cocky and you liked it, he was an attractive man and he knows it and nothings it’s more sexier that this but also you looked around, you didn’t want people to think bad of you and also you know he’s got an interest in you and why not to play a little game with him.
You touched his face with your finger and got from the cheek to the lips, and you stopped right there on his lips and looked into his eyes, the handsome doctor is at your mercy. “- I think you got it wrong dr Melendez, I could assure you, nothing it’s true and I can’t believe you would say all this out loud, now if you excuse me, I need to get back to work” but your tone was so playful and innocent that he was in shock, he could believe that you were actually so bold and not as shy as he thought.
And the game started.

Flirt With The Boss
Tumblr media
Neil Melendez x Reader imagine.
Word count: 700
Imagine that Shaun asking you what it is to flirt while you are in the hospital cafeteria and from there the story gets more and more complicated until the romantic end.
To the Masterlist.
"What's it to flirt, (Y/N)?" Shaun asked while you were eating your lunch at the cafeteria and sat down next to you.
You didn't like most of the surgeons at the hospital, they were unbearably arrogant! But Shaun was different... Shaun was excellent at his job but not arrogant, he was honest (sometimes rude). And most of all SHAUN WAS A GOOD AND LOYAL FRIEND.
"What...? Why are you asking?" You answered confused and wiped your mouth.
"I heard Claire say that to Jared in the morning, and I didn't understand why." Shaun answered and waited for my answer.
"Flirting is a gentle courtship whose purpose is usually romantic or just to annoy." You answered briefly, You were very embarrassed to have this conversation in the cafeteria.
"How do you know when people are flirting, (Y/N)?" Shaun asked. You didn't want to answer, but you saw that Shaun was so curious to know that you couldn't say "no".
"If they maintain an intimate distance when they talk, touch each other unnecessarily, teasing and provoking each other." You stopped for a second and Shaun signaled you to continue, "Look for Three key things: The pretentious giggle, the squirm and hair sweep."
After a few quiet minutes, Shaun came to a surprising conclusion for you.
"Like you and Dr. Melendez." Shaun said decisively.
"WHAT?!" You screamed... shocked.
"You two are flirting all the time." Shaun answered, very confident in what he said.
"NO! WE NOT!" You said quietly, you were afraid that someone would hear the conversation more than ever.
"Yes you are," Shsun insisted, "You even flirted yesterday."
"Me and Melendez?" You asked, "I don't think so."
"Yes you do." Shsun said, "Yesterday, in Melendez's office He told you 'you did well today, Dr Andrews won't hear about the disaster that could have happened from me' and then you squirm and Dr. Melendes giggle."
Remembering the hard day you had yesterday... That was true and you didn't really notice you were flirting with the arrogant Dr. Melendez. But you know you have to deny.
Before you could respond, a voice behind you said, "I believe the talk can wait. Your break is over."
It was Dr. Melendez... SHIT! How much of it did he hear? You couldn't say because after Melendez said those words, he went and waited for us to follow him to his office.
...........................................................................
All the day you tried to avoid Dr. Melendez. And you've managed to avoid him so far...
Dr. Melendez summoned you to his office.
You take a deep breath and go into the Melendez office.
Dr. Melendez looked at you with a look you couldn't read.
"You summoned me?" you asked if you stood in the room and Melendez got up from his chair and headed towards you.
"Yes," Melendez said, "I heard Shsun say we were flirting yesterday."
You didn't know what to say, in the end, you gained strength and you said: "Yes, but..."
"(Y/N), that's true, and it happens quite a few times... I hadn't noticed that we were until now."
You've got a red light on, Melendez always calls you by the last name, never by first name.
"yes... I didn't notice that we were flirting before Shsun told me that" you said and looked at the floor.
"Look at me, (Y/N)" Melendez asked, he was very close to you now.
You looked up, and a second later you felt the lips of Melendez kissing you a gentle and long kiss.
"It's madness..." You whispered. You smiled like a girl in love, when you looked at him, you noticed the broad smile that smiled.
"Yes it is," he agreed, "And very surprising, but it feels so right..."
"Yes it is." You agreed and smiled to the ground, you didn't know what to think.
"We can try and see what happens between us... If you want." Melendez said.
"I think it's an interesting idea..." you smiled.
"So it's okay with you that I ask you out?" Melendez asked.
"Here we are flirting again." you thought to yourself, you couldn't stop smiling happy. You didn't believe you'd feel anything for your arrogant boss.
"Not at all." you sweeped your hair, flirting again.

In which the reader is a sarcastic little shit aka one of the residents at St. Bonaventure and has recently started a relationship with Melendez.
Warnings ⚠️: cursing
Tumblr media
Claire was by your side as soon as you walked into the hospital lobby. You merely glanced at her and resumed the familiar path to the locker rooms, knowing your best friend wouldn’t be bothered by the lack of greetings.
“So?” Claire prompted, eyes wide as she watched you put down your bag and enter the code to your personal locker. “How did it go?”
You started humming, intent on ignoring her. Your voice was the only sound in the otherwise silent room. As expected, Claire’s impatient foot tapping quickly stated its presence.
“Okaaaay, let’s start over.” She moved closer to you and put both of her hands on your shoulders, forcing you to turn around and face her. “How are we feeling today?
“Today I’m feeling cloudy with a chance of sarcastic.” You didn’t miss a beat, blinking innocently.
Claire gave you an unimpressed look and smacked her lips together, expressing her silent disapproval. However, you weren’t affected in the slightest and turned back to your locker.
‘So damn predictable’, you thought to yourself, barely refraining yourself from shaking your head as Claire left but was back in a few seconds, Carly trailing behind her.
“Tell us!” Carly snapped once she reached your side. You chuckled, a Cheshire grin fixed on your lips.
“Ugh, you’re impossible Y/N.” Claire growled under her breath. “We know about you.”
You dropped the grin, sighing exasperatedly at your friend. “Who’s your source?”
“You.” Carly deadpanned, shoving her phone into your hands, screen unlocked. “And your Instagram account. Drunk you should really stop posting half naked pictures of your boss.”
Claire’s annoyed façade crumbled as she let out a giggle, unable to contain herself as she saw you facepalming.
“You and Dr. Melendez, huh?” Claire smirked, her voice rising in a suggestive manner as she exchanged a look with Carly.
“Don’t look at me in that tone of voice, Claire Antonia Browne,” you rolled your eyes. You really should get her a boyfriend so she would stop being so interested in your love life.
“C’mon Y/N. Give us some juice.” Carly whined, her eyes lightning up with a familiar glint. “First there was Dr. Hsiao, then Dr. Solomon and now Dr. Melendez. Is that your type? Doctors? Arrogant doctors? Tattooed doctors? Are those your turn ons? The tattoos?” The receptionist leaned forward, face just a few inches away from your own, mischief sparkling in her dark orbs.
You took a step back, folding your arms across your chest.
“My turn ons? Well I don’t know, maybe some fucking common sense. Go back to work Carly, your shift started half an hour ago.” You snapped at her. Seriously, what was up with all these nosy females who claimed to be her best friends?
“No need to be so defensive sweetheart.” Carly raised her hands in a gest of surrender, smirking at you.
“Better leave her alone.” Claire shared a satisfied smile with their curly haired friend. “We already got all the answers we needed.”
“Which were none!” You yelled at their backs, watching them skipping happily out of the locker room.
As you turned around, you were faced with a smirking Dr. Lim and Dr. Andrews. Choosing to ignore the knowing looks the two women sported, you quickly made your way down to the ER.
***
Later, you were cuddling with Neil on his couch, rewatching Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
“Ready to talk now?” Neil rubbed your back as the credits rolled on the TV screen.
“You know, having feelings is ruining my reputation of being a heartless bitch.” You told him, staring pensively into the now black screen.
“Your reputation? What about mine? I’m supposed to be the dickhead who’s not even a proper human being,” he shook his head, a smile dancing on his lips as you shifted your gaze to him.
“Yeah, I don’t really care about yours,” you shrugged, shooting him a pointed look, “just feeling sad for myself, now I have to start caring for people.”
Neil sat up straighter on the couch, letting you slide off him, “If you ever feel stupid, or weak, or powerless, just remember that I, am not,” he gave you a cheeky wink.
“Jeez, thanks, bae,” you tilted your head and grinned at him, feeling as if you could burst with joy at the familiar banter.
“You’re welcome,” Neil bopped your nose and pecked you on the lips.
“Are we just a couple of jerks who are attracted to each other?” You asked him, snuggling closer to his larger frame as Neil draped an extra blanket around you.
“I believe you mean we are a couple of attractives who are jerked to each other.” Neil laughed, nuzzling your neck.
“You’re such an idiot.” You giggled, tracing patterns on his bare chest with your fingertips.
“At least I’m your idiot.” Neil kissed the crown of your head. “Go to sleep now, beautiful.” He mumbled, closing his eyes.
“My idiot.” You whispered in the dark, feeling comforted and safe in his arms.

Stay with me.
Decided to write this because I was rewatching the latest episode and I felt sad because Neil and Jessica broke up. I am still trying to get a feel of how to write Neil (as well as the rest of the characters) so do be patient with me!
Tumblr media
word count: 1407 words.
“Y/N!”
You look up towards the door after hearing your name and you visibly relax when you notice that it was Claire… instead of Neil. You give her a small smile and watches as she approaches you with a concerned expression on her face.
“I got your message; are you alright?” She reaches over to grab your hand.
You know if you try to play it off as being not much, Claire could probably see right through you. Despite only knowing Claire for a few months now, she has become one of your closest friends in the hospital and being residents who works at one of the most prestigious hospital often means that you barely have time for social life, specifically time for you to be making friends.
“He asked me,” You trail off, not sure how to go about the topic. “We had a row last night.” You start and Claire nods her head, leaning closer. “I was talking about how we managed to save that kid’s life and suddenly the conversation spiralled and we went from talking about a patient to talking about having our own kids and he must have seen right through me because we fought after that?” You tremble slightly as you recall the hurt that was evident in his eyes after the fight you had. “We rarely fight but I am so worried - what if he breaks up with me over this?”
Claire pats your hand before putting her arm around your shoulders. “Have you tried talking to him?” She rubs your shoulders soothingly. Claire doesn’t really know the full details of your problem but she likes to think that she knows enough. She knows that you have been together with your boyfriend close to a year and a half now and she knows just how much you love him, even if you have never told her his name.
You shake your head as you bring your hands up to your face, covering your eyes. The headache you have had from all the crying you have done came back full force. “I just don’t know how to, Claire. I am good at talking to people - listening to their problems and finding solutions to their problems. I can do that but when it comes to my own?” You shake your head once more, the headache starting to distract you a lot. Your head grew dizzy and you would have fallen to the ground if Claire had not been holding on to your shoulders and the last thing you hear is Claire calling for the nurses and darkness consumes you.
You open your eyes to the steady beep of a machine, very little light and feeling a little bit confused. But what you do notice is how heavy and warm your hand feels. You tilt your head to your left and to your surprise, Neil is sleeping there and that warm and heavy feeling was him holding on to your hand. This brings tears to your eyes because you definitely did not expect Neil to show up - not after the fight the two of you had last night.
You sniffle quietly, not wanting to disturb Neil’s sleep but he must have been on alert because he bolted awake the moment you try to lightly tug your hand from Neil’s hand. “Y/N!” He says as he sits up straight.
“Hey,” You reply quietly and Neil squeezes your hand briefly before he stands up, quickly looking over your stats. Your eyes follow his every movement and as much as you really wanted to break the tension in the room, you could not bring yourself to do it. You slowly sit up and lean against the headboard.
Neil, on the other hand, busied himself as he tries to compartmentalise his own thoughts. He wants to scold you for not taking good care of yourself but on the other hand, he feels like pulling you closer to him so he can hug you. He settles on his chair instead as he stares at you.
“You had me worried there, Y/N.” Neil starts and you look away from his intense gaze. “You were dehydrated and exhausted.” He points out when he catches sight of you staring at your file and you turn to look at him. Neil lets out a sigh before he grabs on to your hand again, holding it loosely in his. “Y/N, talk to me.”
You couldn’t help it. The moment he said those words and how worried he sounded, the tears fell down your cheeks and Neil holds onto your face, wiping your tears away with his thumbs. “I’m sorry, Neil.” You murmur and Neil continues to stare at you.
“What are you so afraid of, Y/N?” Neil’s question causes the tears to stop and you stare at him, hoping that whatever he is searching in your face, he will find it worthwhile. “Is it because of your parents’ separation?”
You shake your head. “What if I can’t be a good mum? What if I can’t make any of you happy? What if -“
Neil stops you from talking by kissing you and whatever you wanted to say to him died on your lips as you close your eyes to enjoy his kiss. He pulls back a few seconds after that, cupping your cheeks gently. “Y/N, those are a lot of terrible what ifs.” He murmurs and shakes his head when you open your mouth to refute him. “You don’t think I have the same worries? Every night, I lie awake and think about the same things you do - I am as scared as you are, Y/N but I know I can be a good dad and I think you will make a fantastic mum.” Neil expresses and drops his hands from your face. The look you are giving him is tender and full of love and that is a look he knows all too well.
When he heard earlier from Claire that you had fainted, Neil had been worried out of his mind, almost affecting his work but it took everything in him to stay professional until the very end and once his shift ended, he managed to convince Claire to leave you with him - not before throwing him an accusatory look.
The two of you are quiet but the silence isn’t uncomfortable, in fact, you really appreciated the silence because it gave you time to sort out through your fears and your doubts. You reach for Neil’s hand and he immediately laces his fingers with yours. “Okay.”
Neil furrows his eyebrows and looks at you. “Okay?”
You nod your head. “Okay.” You repeat. “We can try.” You murmur softly and when Neil is still looking at you with a puzzled expression, you tighten your hold on his hand. “Maybe we can spend some time at the community centre this week and play with the kids?” You ask him, giving him a hopeful look.
Neil relaxes, chuckling as he presses his lips on your forehead, happiness washing over him. “Of course - baby steps, Y/N. Baby steps.” He tells you and brings your hand up to his mouth to place a kiss to it. “Now, get some rest okay? You can leave tomorrow morning - take the day off tomorrow.” Neil informs you and you nod your head and you watch him as he tucks you into the bed.
“What about you?” You ask him and Neil shrugs his shoulders.
“I think I will stay here.” Neil points at the chair. “It’s not the comfiest but I think I will be fine there.”
You almost want to roll your eyes at his answer but nod your head regardless. “The bed is big enough for the both of us, Neil.”
Neil chuckles. “True but Claire was already giving me looks earlier when I convinced her to leave you alone. She is probably going to be all up on our cases.” He points out as he made himself comfortable on the chair as much as he possibly can. “Just rest, please?”
You slowly nod your head and pull the covers up to your chest. “Are you sure you don’t want to get into bed with me?” Neil shakes his head, chuckling as he stretches his legs. “Love you, Neil.” You murmur as you start to doze off and the last thing you heard before you fell asleep is Neil’s chuckles.

Melendez x reader - need you
Tumblr media
Dating people you worked with was never a good idea, and now you understood why.
Because you had decided to go to the ER to get away from Melendez after an explosive argument the night before, and now you were stuck in quarantine.
“If we take this whole ER in half, we can tackle this easier.”
Lim nodded her head.
“Right, we’ll swap between patient care and tending to the rest.”
“I’ll take first patient care.”
You headed over to where the main quarantine was and suited up to head inside.
You couldn’t think of anything else, you had a job to do and you needed to be in top mind in order to do it.
You couldn’t be distracted right now, so you pushed everything else to the back of your mind, throwing your all into your work.
What you weren’t expecting was for you to be the next person to get infected, and you backed yourself into the room.
“Listen Morgan, I can keep an eye on Lim while I’m in here, just focus on everyone else.”
“I need to keep an eye on you both.”
“It’ll do no good, just focus on them, I have this, okay? Shaun needs support.”
She reluctantly nodded, and you walked over to your friend, placing a hand on her arm.
“You’ll get through this.”
You paced back and forth, checked on Lim, gave help to Shaun and Morgan when you could, but there wasn’t much you can do.
You could feel yourself getting weak and you knew it was getting worse, you tried heard your phone ringing somewhere but didn’t bother to find it.
Sitting on the chair, you lowered your head, taking deep and shallow breaths.
“It’s Andrews, he’s looking for you.”
You looked up at Alex and laughed weakly.
“You.. you shouldn’t be here…”
“Neither should you. I’m coming in.”
You coughed, shaking your head as you held up your hand.
“No…”
“You need the help.”
“I.. I’m fine…”
Andrews looked at the screen to see you sitting in the chair talking to Alex, and Melendez burst into the room once more.
He looked at the screens briefly, but didn’t seem to notice you as he began to talk.
Nobody had told him where you were.
Nobody had told your boyfriend you were in that room on the verge of death.
He was worried enough for Lim, and was stressed as it was, they couldn’t bring themselves to tell him that you were in there.
And Andrews had to decide on what to do.
Did he tell Melendez and stress him even more?
Or did he keep it to himself and you possibly die in there without your own boyfriend knowing?
If this were a normal patient their family would’ve been notified by now.
“Andrews I need a decision now.”
Andrews snapped out of his head.
“Right.”
Melendez looked up, and he furrowed his brows a little bit.
Andrews quickly began to help him come up with a game plan for his patient.
You on the other hand we’re getting worse, your temperature had gone up, and you were getting worse and worse.
“You’ll be okay.”
You smiled weakly.
“I.. tell.. tell him I didn’t mean it…”
“Who? Doctor Melendez?”
You weakly nodded.
Morgan smiled at you, taking your hand with her gloved one.
“You’ll be able to tell him yourself…”
Even she wasn’t convinced by her own words, but she had to flick between caring for you and Lim who you were now in the same state as.
And even when Morgan’s treatment plan seemed to work for Lim, and she was awake and talking, you still had made no improvement.
“You need to tell him…” Lim whispered.
“Andrews already has.” Morgan replied.
You were rushed away from them the moment it was safe.
Melendez was stood frozen in his office as he stared at his boss.
“You.. you knew?!” He hissed.
“I decided it was best not to tell you, you already had enough going on.”
“You knew that (Y/N) was in there and didn’t think to tell me?!”
“I made a choice and I stand by that choice, but as of now (Y/N) is being rushed to intensive care.”
So that’s where he ran off to, grabbing the nearest to help him find your room and he walked in.
You were pale, and the machines were beeping, and he slowly walked over, sitting on the edge of your bed.
Melendez reached out, gently touching your face.
“You need to wake up..” he whispered.
He moved to a chair, leaning over the bed, resting his head on your stomach as he looked up at you.
He was mindful not to lay on your chest, or any wires, but he laid there just staring at you. Waiting.
He fell asleep like that, and he woke up like that.
Except you still weren’t awake, and you made no progress or decline.
You just stayed steady.
It was like you were awake but you weren’t.
And for the next few hours he just laid there watching you.
“Please wake up…”
He sat up, resting his forehead on your hand as he clutched it in his.
And he felt it.
The small twitch, and heard the small grumble you made as you moved.
Snapping his head up he looked at you as you opened your eyes.
“Hey…”
You moved your eyes towards him and smiled tiredly.
“You look like crap…”
He laughed, pressing a kiss to your knuckles as he looked at you.
“So do you.”
You smiled a bit, resting your head back as you took a deep breath.
“I love you.” he said.
You smiled at him, squeezing his hand.
“I’m so sorry…”
He shook his head, standing up so he could lay on the bed next to you, letting you rest your head on his shoulder.
“Don’t be, I started that argument. It’s my fault.”
He sighed.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you…”
You closed your eyes, holding his hand tightly.
“I love you too Neil…”
Even though he could’ve been anywhere, done anything else, he stayed there with you, holding you and reassuring you he loved you

Melendez x reader - our stories
Tumblr media
Grumbling under your breath, you stormed over and slammed the file on the table.
“Your results.”
“Is that the way you treat the people you work with?” Melendez asked.
“Only arrogant assholes who think they’re better than everybody else.”
“Keep it up and you’ll be written up.”
You said nothing and he picked up the file to read through it.
“Run them again.”
“I’ve just run them, it’s a waste of time, clearly we need to start antibiotics.”
“And I’m telling you to run these tests again, so go.”
“It’s scut work!”
“And that’s what you’re on until you start treating people with respect.”
You scoffed.
“I’ll respect you when you start respecting me and Shaun.”
With that, you walked off and turned to Shaun who was waiting outside.
“Did you get in trouble?”
“No Shaun, I didn’t. And you’re not either, come on.”
He quickly followed you.
“I could hear you shouting.”
“It’s nothing Shaun, let’s just go rerun those tests.”
“Okay.”
You were still stuck on scut work like you always were, and you were debating moving to a different hospital.
You had plenty of offers from other places, you were a highly sought out candidate for a residency.
So after a few more weeks of clashing heads with with Melendez, you began looking at a few vacancies, weighing up your options.
When your phone began to ring, you looked at it and chose to ignore it, since you didn’t want to speak to your boss.
When it kept ringing you simply just sent a message saying you were sick and turned your phone off.
But then your house phone began to ring, and with a heavy sigh you walked over and answered it.
“What?”
You listened to the voice of the nurse on the other end, and you were already rushing around trying to gather everything.
“I’m on my way.”
Hanging up, you tossed it aside, changed, grabbed your mobile phone and rushed out of your apartment.
You drove as fast as you could to the hospital, running straight into the ER.
“You’re late and ignoring a call in.”
“Shut up.” You snapped.
“I have put up with you long enough, I will be writing you up and we will be having a meeting about your behaviour so let’s go.”
“No.”
You began rummaging through all the files, looking for a specific one.
“That is enough!”
Melendez took the files away from you, and you slapped his hand away making a few people stop before they carried on.
“This kind of behaviour I would expect from Shaun, but from you? You are out of control and out of line.”
You barged past him, and you began to look at all of the rooms.
“Is this you trying to prove a point? You’re being childish!” Melendez snapped.
You carried on ignoring him and he grabbed your arm.
“Stop!”
You spun around, shoving him backwards.
“Don’t you dare touch me.”
With that, you carried on and you disappeared from his sight.
He didn’t have time to chance you, he had things to be doing so that’s what he went to do, deciding he would deal with you afterwards.
So he went to his next patient with Claire, Jared and Shaun.
“My sister…”
“One of the nurses reached out to your family Joshua, she’s coming.” Melendez smiled.
Joshua took a weak breath, nodding his head as he let the doctors check on him.
“You need new lungs.” Shaun said.
“Murphy.” Melendez snapped.
The door was slammed open, and you rushed over to Joshua, taking his hand in yours.
“You came…” he whispered.
You placed your hand on his head.
“Of course I came.”
You looked to Melendez before turning to the others.
“Help him.” You said quietly.
“We’ll do everything we can.” Jared said.
You nodded and pulled a chair over to sit next to your brother, only half listening to everything that was being said.
Not long later Melendez came back in.
“I need to ask a few follow up questions.”
“Let him sleep.”
“Alright. Then I’ll ask you. Can we talk over here?”
You nodded, getting up to follow him but you wouldn’t leave the room, so he closed the door, letting you stay inside.
You kept your eyes closely on your brother.
“When he came in we did some tests, and an MRI on his lungs revealed masses we can’t make sense off.”
“So what do you want?” You asked.
“I want to know why, or I want permission to run some more tests. Until we figure out what’s causing his issues we can’t help Joshua.”
“What’s your initial prognosis?”
“(Y/N).”
“What is your thoughts?” You asked sternly.
He sighed heavily.
“Right now, a transplant is his best option, but if we know what the cause is we can possibly find the real answer. Either way we will get it.”
“Then run your tests.”
“(Y/N), I want to help your brother.”
“Run the tests.”
With that, you walked away.
Melendez wasn’t sure what he expected from you, but it wasn’t that.
He knew you wanted to help your brother, but he wasn’t expecting you to be so recluse about your life what you would prefer them to run tests over answering a few questions.
But he ran the tests just like you had told him to do.
He came back with everybody with the results, and he looked at the rest of the team.
“Go, get some rest. We’ll handle the next step in the morning.”
He walked into the room and closed the door.
Your brother looked up from his phone, and he set it aside.
“We found some abnormalities on your tests, and we ran a few more with your sisters consent. You have extreme scarring to your lungs.”
Joshua sighed, coughing a little bit.
“I know.”
“You know? Does (Y/N) know?”
“Of course.”
Melendez sighed heavily as he walked over.
“There’s a few possible options, but the only long term solution is a transplant, how did you get scars this bad?”
Joshua smiled a little.
“Smoke burns after a while.” He said.
Melendez gave a look of confusion.
“When I was a kid.. I was trapped in a fire, but the hospital didn’t look that hard at me.”
“You have no other scars indicating damage from a fire.”
“Because I didn’t get burned.”
Joshua looked towards you, and so did Melendez.
“I won’t say anything else.. just do what you have to.”
Melendez nodded his head, and they did what they could to give your brother some more time while he wanted for a more permanent solution.
But the doctor found his attention kept going towards you, and even after your brother was cleared to go home with frequent check ups, and you returned back to work, he had questions.
So finally he decided to act.
“Can we talk?”
You sighed, doing the buttons up on your jacket.
“Make it quick.”
You followed him over to an empty on call room, and he closed the door.
“Joshua explained how he scarred his lungs. It explained he was left in a fire, he explained he never got burned, which for that kind of damage is a miracle.”
“These things happen.”
Melendez sighed.
“I want to run some tests on you to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to you.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“If you were in the fire for even half as long I doubt it.”
“Listen to my breathing if you want, you won’t find anything.”
He walked over, and he listened to your breath, and it was perfect, not a hint of an issue with your lungs.
“I never breathed in smoke, because I stole an oxygen tank from the firefighters when they weren’t looking, I stole two, one for me one for Joshua.”
You sighed, sitting in the bench.
“My brother didn’t get burned because I did, I covered him so he wouldn’t get hurt.”
You rolled up your sleeve to show him your burned arm, and rolled it back down.
“Our parents were shit, they never loved us, and left us to burn in that fire. And I would’ve stood and watched that house burn down if my brother weren’t in there Melendez.”
You stood up, picking your bag up.
“So before you start thinking everybody is the same pretentious ass that you are, maybe you should take the stick out every once in a while and see we’re all human. We’re all healing over something, and it’s no excuse for you to take out pain out on us.”
“I know, I know and I’m sorry. Okay? I am. I was wrong and I should never have treated you with such disrespect.”
You walked turned to the door.
“Maybe we can start again, as friends?” He asked.
“Not a chance.”
Melendez watched you leave and he ran a hand over his hair.
He had messed up big time, and it was possibly going to cost the hospital and him one of the best surgeons that they had ever seen.
He felt bad.
And he wanted to make it right with you, not only that, but he genuinely did want to know more about you, and get your scars looked at properly.
But he knew it wasn’t going to easy.
Everybody had a story, and he had a feeling that was only a fraction of yours

Melendez x reader - different kind
Tumblr media
Sitting in the hospital bed, you stared out the window, listening to the sound of the other person in the room pacing up and down.
“What is taking them so long?” He growled.
“Watch your temper.” The guard snapped.
“Or what?!”
You turned to the man who now had four guns pointed at him.
“Keep your anger, it does no good here.” You said.
The man sighed, sitting down in the chair and you turned to the guards who narrowed their eyes and lowered their weapons.
“Remember your place animal.” One huffed.
You turned back to the window, ignoring the door as it was opened and closed.
“(Y/N) (L/N), 29, here for a valve replacement.” A woman spoke.
“Why all the guards?” A man asked.
You glanced at the four who had entered your room, eyes focused on them and they stepped back a little seeing the glow to them.
Another man entered.
“Because we aren’t dealing with a normal patient today. I’m Doctor Andrews, chief of surgery.”
The others introduced themselves to you.
You said nothing and Andrews gestured towards you.
“Can we?”
You gave a small nod of your head.
Jared walked over, listening to the sound of your heart and lungs, and they spoke while doing so but you weren’t that focused.
“So we have you scheduled for a replacement in a few days, your heart is managing fine on its own but we need to keep you under observation since we aren’t allowed to run our normal tests.”
You turned to Liam.
“How do you intend to do the surgery?” He asked.
“The same way we would on anybody else.” Melendez replied.
Liam scoffed.
“That won’t work, you’ll be wasting your time.”
“Well we aren’t sure what we’re dealing with, this is a first for us all, so care to explain?” Claire said.
Liam looked at you and you shook your head.
“No, we don’t.”
With that, Liam left, taking three of the guards with him while one stayed with you.
“Are they here for our safety?” Shaun asked.
“Yes doctor Murphy, they are.”
You looked at Andrews, then to Shaun who shuffled about a little bit.
Sighing you held out your arm to him.
He walked over, taking it, pressing two fingers against the pulse point as he looked at the heart monitor.
“Your stats are higher than other people’s.” He noted.
“Is that the case for everybody like (Y/N)?”
“Yes, werewolves tend to have a higher heart rate and temperature so they can thrive in the wild.” The guard replied.
“We’ll come through soon, explain the risks and complications with the surgery, and what other options we can find for you.”
You said nothing and they left.
This wasn’t a normal procedure, and they didn’t know if a few days was going to be long enough to figure it all out.
So for the following few hours they poured everything they had into doing research, reading papers and studies on werewolves to find anything to help.
Later that evening, it was Melendez who came back in holding a few papers.
“We found a few things, but I’m not sure if they’re true, do you mind if we chat about them?”
He waited for your response and glanced to the guard.
“They won’t speak, aside from their pack and us, she doesn’t communicate with anybody else.”
The doctor nodded his head and walked in, sitting on a chair on the other side of the room.
He was hoping maybe asking questions would get a response out of you but it didn’t.
“We’re only trying to help you, I need you to tell me if any of these ideas will work.” He sighed.
You glanced over, yellow eyes beaming at him, and he looked away.
“Will they work?”
He glanced back over just in time to see you shake your head.
“Right, so clearly the surgery is the best option.”
Again you shook your head and he furrowed his brows a little bit.
You held your hand out, and he walked over, handing the papers to you, and you flicked through them before pointed at something.
“Werewolves have a faster healing rate, with most wounds healing seconds after infliction…”
He ran a hand down his face.
“So even if I attempt to preform surgery, your wound will attempt to close while I’m still in there?” He asked.
Again you nodded your head.
“Then we’ll need to keep you in until we can find something else.”
And that’s what they did.
It took a lot of paperwork and meetings, but they were allowed to keep you in the hospital so they could figure out what to do.
With your heart failing, but your heightened healing trying to fix it, they weren’t sure how much time they had.
But they eventually got used to the notion of their being a dangerous being inside of the hospital.
But you still refused to help them in any way, letting them trying to figure it out in their own.
Melendez walked in, giving you a smile as he walked over to the monitor.
“Are you doing alright today?” He asked.
He glanced at you to see you staring out the window.
“We’re finalising all the paperwork for your surgery now, after today you’ll have a heart that is hopefully as good as new.”
You looked up.
“There are so risks involved, being that you may not be able to do everything you used to be able to.”
He handed you some paper work and you looked at it.
“I just need your consent and when we get the approval, we can go ahead.”
You read over the papers briefly, then you handed them back to him, laying on your side away from him.
“(Y/N) you need this surgery. You will die without it.”
You clenched your jaw.
“There’s nothing to be scared off, we’ve talked to your healer, he said the measurements are safe, that they won’t harm you in the long run.”
He took the papers, trying to figure out what you had seen to cause this reaction.
“You can still be a werewolf you know, you just will need to be careful. These are just possible risks.”
You still didn’t move and he sighed.
“Is transforming, or strength, or speed more important to you than your own life?” He asked.
You closed your eyes.
“You’re scared, and unsure. I understand, I can bring down somebody who can ease your concerns.”
He left and you waited.
You didn’t want to go under the knife, you didn’t want the surgery, but you couldn’t say there because eventually somebody would overrule you.
So when you knew the coast was clear you left, slipping past people and outside where a Liam was waiting.
“Are you sure about this?”
“Take me home.”
He nodded and helped you in the car, driving you back out of the city.
You got home, immediately making your way inside and to the back to sit down on a chair, looking at all the face that were looking back at you.
“I’ll be fine, go.”
They seemed unconvinced and instead stayed close to you.
A pack took care of one of their own when they were sick, and when that person was the daughter of their leader, they took extra care.
It had been a few days and you couldn’t travel far, you mainly stayed at your home.
“You should have stayed there.”
You looked up to your dad.
“It is no place for the likes of us.”
“Maybe not, but they could’ve helped you.”
“If this is the Will of fate then so be it.”
He sighed, placing a hand on your head.
“Hear the doctor out at least.”
With that, he left and a few minutes later somebody else sat next to you.
“Running away from a hospital isn’t the best way to refuse medical care you know.”
You said nothing.
“Would you really rather die than have a surgery that can save your life? For what? Just because you may not be able to transform again? Have all the things you do now?”
You clenched your jaw, looking at your hands.
“Right now as it stands if you transform again your heart won’t be able to handle the stress, you will die. There’s only a small chance you’ll lose the ability to do this.”
You turned your attention to the sky.
“It isn’t about losing that ability…”
Melendez looked at you in shock.
“If I lose that, I lose everything that makes me who I am… everything that my ancestors raised us to be, my whole bloodline will be gone…”
“But you will be alive.”
You turned to him.
“What’s the most painful thing you’ve ever experienced?”
Melendez thought for a moment, but he couldn’t come up with an answer.
“Exactly, you can’t answer. For humans they have no answer. For us it’s different..”
You looked away.
“If we lose that part of us we lose who we are, it breaks us, drives us insane.”
“It’s only a small risk.”
“But still a risk, a werewolf without a wolf is nothing..”
Melendez sighed a little.
“But after the surgery there’s a better chance that you can do all of that again and more.”
“You know nothing about us…”
“Maybe not, but I know a lot about surgery.”
You glanced at him and he smiled a little bit.
“How about this, I’ll tell you everything about the surgery, and you can tell me how to better the procedure. After the surgery you tell me about werewolves.”
You agreed to this and he began to run you through everything.
After hearing it all, you understood it better but you still had your doubts.
“You will be doing it?”
“I will.”
You nodded.
“So do I have your permission?”
You sighed, looking at the pack who came crowding around, awaiting your answer.
“Okay.”
Melendez smiled.
He had never done surgery on a werewolf, but he wanted to help you, and he needed to make sure that you made it through this

Neil Melendez x reader - in the snow
Tumblr media
Hello, I saw you were doing The Good Doctor fics and I just wanted to request one if you are ok with that It could be anything really, like idk, going to the park or taking a walk or litterally anything, this fandom is so small and hungry Thanks friend - Anon💜
Sitting on the bench, you rubbed your hands together and brought them up to your mouth, blowing on them and rubbing them together to try and warm them up.
The sky was a dark grey, clouds threatening to spill whatever they were holding all over the city.
“Where’s your gloves?”
Looking up in surprise, you blinked and the shock melted away into happiness as you looked up at the man in front of you.
He was still wearing his scrubs, meaning he’d come here straight from the hospital.
“I couldn’t find them. Why’re you here?”
Neil smiled at sat next to you, pulling his gloves off as he took your hands in his, pulling them on to your hands.
“Claire mentioned she saw you walking around while she was on her run. I had a feeling you’d still be here.” He hummed softly.
You nodded your head and rested it on his shoulder, sighing in content as you felt the warmth radiating from him.
Neil smiled, resting his head on yours as he held you, closing his eyes for a few moments.
“Come on.” He said softly.
Neil stood out and held his arm out for you, and with a smile you took it, looping your arm with his as the pair of you slowly started to wonder.
You guys talked about everything that came to your minds, from work, to the weather, random things you just thought off.
The air was getting colder, you could see your breath and you were starting to shiver.
“How about some coffee?” Neil asked.
“Hot chocolate?” You asked back.
He laughed.
“Of course.”
Kissing the top of your head, he started to lead you towards the exit of the park.
That’s when it happened.
You noticed it first, the small white flake that fell from the sky and landed on your arm.
You stopped.
Neil stopped as well and turned to face you.
The heavens opened up, dumping snow on the whole city.
Neil looked at you, snow covering your hair and jacket, a huge smile on your face as you looked up at the sky in amazement.
You watched as the white flakes came rushing down in all directions, no goal in mind.
“Wow….” You breathed.
You turned to face him.
Snow covered his hair, his eyes were fixated on you, a soft smile was on his face as he reached out, fingers gently brushing your cheeks.
Leaning into his touch, you closed your eyes and smiled to yourself.
He gently cupped your face and you opened your eyes to see him right in front of you, eyes half lidded as he hesitated.
“Neil…” you whispered.
“Tell me I can…” he breathed out.
You closed your eyes and gently brushed your lips against his before you pulled away.
“Yes…” you whispered.
He quickly stepped forward and kissed you, holding your closely as he did so.
You smiled, wrapping your arms around his neck.
Neil was the first to pull away, his nose brushing against yours as he looked at you softly.
You opened your eyes and smiled back, bringing your arms from around his neck to his chest.
“I love you.” He said.
“I love you too.”
Burying your face into his chest, you sighed happily as he held you tightly.
Neil was glad he decided to come to the park today, sure you’d been dating for a while, but he never had to guts to tell you he loved you.
He wasn’t sure what made him want to say it, but looking at you, he realised how much he wanted you, how much he needed you.
He wanted to spend his whole life with you.
And little did he know, you felt the exact same

Neil Melendez x reader - image of you
Tumblr media
Hey, could I get a Neil Melendez x reader? With a prompt you like :3 have a good day :) - Anon💜
Staring at the doctor across the hallway, you leant back against the nurses station and took a sip from the cup in your hand.
“Staring at him won’t do much.”
You looked to your side and gave a small little shrug as you went back to watching him.
“I know, but at least I can burn the image of him into my brain so I don’t forget what he looks like.” You replied softly.
Claire sighed to herself and placed her hand over yours, taking the cup as she set it on the desk before turning you away.
“You won’t forget him.” She said softly.
“Claire, I’ve got an incurable disease that’s rapidly destroying my eyesight, in less than a year I won’t be able to see anything at all.”
“But you spent years with him, you already know what he looks like without having to look at him.”
You leant across the desk and rested your head in your arms.
“That’s why he’s pissed…” you whispered.
“Wait, what?” She asked.
You stood up, grabbing your cup as you gestured for her to follow you.
She did and you led her over to the waiting area, both of you taking a seat away from all the other people patiently waiting to be seen or to be told how their loved one was doing.
You set your cup on the floor next to you, and you clasped your hands together as tears started to burn your eyes.
“He’s pissed at me because I never told him about it… he only found out when I was here last week for a check up and he had to cover my usual doctor…”
“So that’s why he’s been ignoring you?” She asked softly.
You nodded your head.
“He’s pissed… and he has a right to be… I’ve known about this since I was a teenager… I’ve been dating Neil for nearly two years and I never told him…”
“Talk to him.” She gently urged.
You slowly stood up and grabbed your cup, watching as he walked away for his break with Doctor Lim instead.
“There’s no point, I’ve tried… look.. don’t tell him I was here, okay?”
With that you left and you went back home.
The Labrador you were training as a guide dog immediately latched to your side as you walked through the door and you just broke down.
Slumping down, back against the front door, tears streaming down your face as you heavily sobbed.
Marco sat next to you, resting his head on your arms as you gently held him.
Days turned into weeks, and you still hadn’t seen or heard from Neil, no matter how much you texted or called him, and finally you sent the message you had been dreading.
You’d woken up that morning, and the darkness in your vision was much worse than it was the day before, you struggled to see your phone, and it took ages for you to find anything.
You sighed to yourself, heavy heart but this was the right choice.
It was simple.
Six words.
You: I think we should break up
Setting your phone beside you, you wanted to cry, but you just didn’t have it in your anymore.
You wanted to, but you’d been crying for ages, and you physically couldn’t do it anymore.
You were trying to process so much that you just felt numb. You should’ve been upset about everything going on, but you just couldn’t feel it anymore.
Marco sat with you, letting out a small whine and you placed your hand on his head, letting him know you were okay.
Throughout the door, your sight got better but after taking a nap you wake up and you couldn’t see anything.
You started to hyperventilate, panicking and you tried to search for your phone.
You had no idea where you put it.
“Neil…!” You yelled softly.
You prayed maybe he just happened to come home, but of course there was no response.
Marco barked and jumped on the bed.
“Marco.. Marco phone…” you sobbed.
The dog rushed away and a few seconds later dropped something in your lap.
You picked it up and tried to figure out what to do.
“Siri.. call Claire…”
“Calling Claire…” the AI responded.
It rang a few times before she picked up.
“(Y/N)?”
“Claire I.. I can’t.. I can’t…” you sobbed.
“I’m coming.”
She hung up and you curled up into a ball, covering yourself up the with quilt
Marco whined and he laid next to you.
It felt like ages passed, and when the door opened he barked a few times but he never left your side.
“(Y/N)!”
Claire rushed into the bedroom and got the quilt off you.
“Come on.”
She stuffed some of your clothes into a bag, put your guide dogs harness on and pulled you up, passing you the handle before she took your other arm in hers.
“It’s going to be okay, you’re going to be okay.”
“I can’t see…”
“We’ll figure it out, okay?”
You sniffled a little and sat down, letting her out your seatbelt on you before closing your door.
The whole way she reassured you and let you know she was with you.
The moment you got into hospital you were rushed into a room and doctors started to preform tests on you.
You sat in the room, Marco laid at the side of your bed while you simply just laid on your back.
The door opened and you slowly sat yourself up.
“Claire?” You asked.
The door closed and you tried to figure out who entered the room.
“No.”
You froze for a second, and you turned your head down.
“Neil…” you whispered.
He walked over, and the side of the hospital bed dipped.
“What happened?” He asked softly.
“You’re a doctor… just read the chart…” you mumbled.
Neil sighed and he took your hand in his, giving it a light squeeze.
“Look, I was upset, okay? And I was going to come talk to you, but I’ve been working doubles for the past two weeks I haven’t had the chance. I was never angry at you sweetheart, I was just upset you never told me. Not until it was getting worse.”
You lifted your head, and he could see how red your eyes were from crying, how tired you were, but there was something else.
A glassy sheen over them, almost cloudy looking.
Reaching up with his other hand, Neil placed his hand on your cheek, and you leant into his touch.
“You’re still just as beautiful…”
You looked down.
“I.. I can’t see you…”
“You can, just not how you used to.”
Neil took your hands and placed them on his face, and your fingers started to trail along the skin.
You mapped out his face, imprinting the feel and image of him into your head.
You could tell his was smiling, the could feel the little crinkles at the corner of his eyes, the little dimples next to his lips.
After a few minutes you stopped and just held his face in your hands.
“How did you know I was here?” You asked softly.
“Claire rang me when she checked you in. She told me you couldn’t see anymore, and you were upset.”
You slowly nodded your head.
He placed his hands over yours and lowered them into your lap, then he slowly cradled your face and leant in.
You could feel his nose against yours, his breath on your lips.
“We’re going to get through this okay? I’m going to be with you every step of the way.” He whispered.
You nodded your head and he leant in, lightly kissing you for a second before he pulled away.
You immediately leant back in, kissing him again and he took this as a sign and leant into the kiss, smiling softly into it.
You smiled back and after what felt like forever you pulled away.
“Get some rest…” he whispered.
You nodded and laid down, you heard some shuffling, and Neil climbed over you and laid on the other side of you.
Picking your head up he rested your head on his shoulder and wrapped an arm around you while you shuffled into his side.
He smiled watching as you were in his arms.
“I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you too…” you replied.
He kissed your head and closed his eyes, letting out a small sigh.
All that mattered to him right now was making sure you adjusted well, and letting you know he wasn’t going anywhere
