I'm delighted to see a few new posts and excerpts from Rachel & Co.! I still hope you'll be able to finish the project someday.
I'm so glad you're enjoying them!
I have officially started proofreading my transcriptions of the letters (it's amazing how many [illegible]s you can fill in after you've read a few hundred thousand words of someone's handwriting) so hopefully there will be much more Rachel in the coming months.
#rachel & co#asks#the proofreading has been on hold for the last few years as I only had a netbook and not a laptop with a full word processor#and any attempt I made to open my master transcription document in google docs resulted in my browser crashing#google docs apparently not great at handling documents north of 1000 pages

About ch 25
Ladies and gentlemen, our delicious black-haired uke is here.

I can’t believe it, I’ve been waiting for this moment for years! He looks so handsome! He’s so handsome!! Every chapter that passes leaves me thinking that it was inevitable for Kagi to fall in love… He’s the whole package: handsome, kind, intelligent, dedicated and caring and even funny (in his own way).

I got a good laugh out of him dyeing his hair in the dorm bathroom, he takes zero care with his hair! I just hope that when he’s an adult, he’ll be more aware of and pay a stylist. But what I liked most about that scene is how everyday and natural it is for a teenager to dye his hair without much care with a home hair dye kit (I also used those in my student years), so how everyday life is portrayed I loved it.
Now, I LOVE Kagi’s shocked face seeing that his stunning and shiny Hirano has black hair! The shock on his face is undeniable, and Hirano's pissed off face is epic. Did he expect him to take it so easy if he's never seen him like this before? Although I think he likes him more with blonde hair (even though there are some sparkles around anyway) he's still our his handsome bad boy.
But he quickly shakes off the shock because Kagi is so hungry for Hirano!

He can't help but look at Hirano's neck and completely forget his initial stupefaction, and I think we'll have a lot more scenes like this from now on, because Kagi is reaching his limit. I think he doesn't just want to tell him (and shout from the rooftops) that he loves his roommate, but he wants to express it in the broadest sense of the word.

Kagi knowing what Hirano smells like... We had already seen that he likes the smell of his bed, but he shamelessly tells him that he doesn't have the same smell as usual, that boy is so in love! And the worst thing is that Hirano doesn't even move an eyebrow at his comments.
Because Hirano really doesn't get it.
And that hurts me (and Kagi as well)
Because Kagi is more and more in love, more and more immersed in that seemingly unrequited love, and every touch he gives to our favorite blond only drives him more desperate, since he simply can't touch him the way he wants because Hirano doesn't know what he himself wants.
And maybe Hirano can't respond to Kagi, not because he doesn't want to, but because he really can't, and that would be okay, since he must first understand what romance is for him, and also learn about his own sexuality in order to reciprocate Kagi's love. So there's a long way to go since he's just now seeing that "normal" isn't obvious to him.

Normal.
The fact that in this chapter we begin to think about what is normal makes me think that this story is definitely far from the naive story of ssmy (which dealt with it superficially). Among the negative approach that others characters have towards homosexuality (Hanzawa being the main detractor here) that is much more evident in HRKG and this somewhat aroace facet of Hirano, I think it is possible that we see a more complex development since there are two very important factors that make the consolidation of the relationship more difficult. Special mention that Hirano was looking for the definition of normal, and not that of romance or another that could guide him, without taking into account that he is with a kind of study computer (or something like that, it is too small to even be a netbook*) and he doesn't even Google it! That's why the answers are so brief and linked to the academic. Poor boy, there is a long way to go.

I had already thought about this, but I think he urgently needs to take one of those magazine tests where you mark the alternatives and have a result as “you are in love”! **. Well, I think Hirano urgently needs a guide or someone to consult with. And maybe now that he knows that Sasaki is not exactly in the same situation as him, and that he does want to kiss his crush, he can go ask him and clear up his, now, black-haired head.

And while again we don't see his reaction to Kagi almost kissing him (that panel is tattooed in my eyes), now I firmly believe that he didn't really realize that he was going to be kissed. Because if he's just now thinking about it, and only when he heard his classmates talking about it did he think about kissing Kagi, we have two important points:
1- Hirano hasn't really thought about romance or what a romantic relationship means to him.
2- If he hasn't thought about or understands that kind of interaction, then he must not have realized that he was almost kissed.
It's just that if Kagi doesn't tell him, he doesn't realize it. Just like when he touched his hair, if he doesn't tell him to his face, he doesn't understand the intentions and now it leaves me thinking: does he really understand what it means to do this lovers experiment?
Because only when talking to his classmates has he thought that he's going to have to flirt, that he's going to kiss, and then at some point he'll have to think about what else a love relationship entails (and God knows what else is Kagi waiting for to happen between them).
But he never made the connection of why Ogasawara was looking under his girlfriend's pillow even when his other classmates pointed out (indirectly) why he might have been under her sheets. So he's never really thought about the subject? So, it's not just that he has to figure out his feelings for his friend anymore, he also has to discover his own sexuality, and I think this is super complex since suddenly, he finds himself in the middle of a confession, an experiment he doesn't understand and a sexual awakening he never came close to in all his years. At most he saw the magazines and CDs passed around the classroom and the disciplinary committee, but then he never cared to look at them. He really is learning from scratch, and in a very short time.

A chapter that was very short for me and that I think sets the stage for Hirano's arc of self-knowledge, both about himself and about what he feels for Kagi, but not necessarily leading to an immediate confession (I just hope it's in Kagi's favor, and not leading to a no for an answer).
And I don't want sensei to give us a hasty confession because there is so much to tell that I would find it a waste if in two chapters Hirano understood everything and confessed (there is still room for more delicious angst).
But this ch left me with a bittersweet taste… I really thought there was progress (in romance), but I feel like it's a confirmation that Hirano doesn't really understand anything. Still, it makes me sad because it is difficult not to understand what is “normal”, to have those questions and not knowing how to deal with them, but this chapter gave me the feeling that there is still a long long way to go before we can see them together. This is something that I already feared after seeing some of the extras in ssmy and other illustrations, that they are not going to be together that fast, although I still have hope that they will be able to be a couple before Hirano leaves the dorm.
Just one more idea: Hirano thinking about kissing Kagi in his bed, this is straight out of a fanfic! (And we already know how it would end).
#Sorry his is really long (again) I had to shorten it to make it a somewhat easier to read#And I hope it's still intelligible#Because I got tired halfway through the translation#so I hope you can forgive the mistakes#*Netbook for the younger generation was a type of personal computer that was very small between 10 and 12 inches and without much capacity.#**It reminds me a bit of OHSHC where Haruhi is given a magazine with a test and only then can she realize that she is in love with Tamaki.#hiranoamaakagiura#hiranoloveskagiura#hirano and kagiura#hirano to kagiura#hirano y kagiura#hirano taiga#kagiura akira#hirakagi#kagihira#HRKG#KGHR

in the middle of the night, i hear my netbook's hard disk whirring away.
i put my ear up to its keyboard, listening.
what joys do you wish to share, little creature of plastic and silicon?
are your circuits filled with glee, whenever you run a program, build a driver, play a song, display a screensaver?
when i wave at your webcam, do you, in your semiconductive heart, wish to wave back?

i've been thinking a lot about ritsuka and soubi's relationship again and i don't think there's anything i can say that won't sound repetitive at this point. but it is really lovely how their relationship development is tracked through spell battles BUT THIS GOT KIND OF OUT OF CONTROL. anyway their first two battles with breathless is mostly just set-up and confusion, and then the battle with sleepless isn't necessarily less confusing but ritsuka i guess starts to get a bit of a handle on things with "choosing" on his "own" to provide strength for soubi through a bit of intimacy / licking soubi's bleeding name, and he clings to soubi during battle. he can feel reassured by soubi's strength and his ability to perform, at least/if only in battle
ritsuka is being strategic but is genuinely moved by soubi, but still ritsuka's feelings for soubi aren't influenced by soubi's status as ritsuka's fighter, but soubi's protection of ritsuka and the affection that might be required for soubi's strength for ritsuka. in the fighter/sacrifice mindset the protection/affection together as strength might be kind of a given to work well, but as we've seen with how many pairs operate (beloved seimei/soubi and seimei/nisei, ritsu/soubi, bloodless etc, and of course between loveless ritsuka/soubi!!!!!) "bonds" or the "affection" or feelings behind/driving a bond don't necessarily come from an objectively safe, or "loving" place, but you could argue the root is still "love" in some sense even if one-sided, but i guess more accurately the root is some kind of attachment or devotion, heavily reliant on how the fighter unit functions and feels for their sacrifice. i mean this is clear without me saying it but yeah. in this sense the sacrifice/fighter situation is kind of destined to be dysfunctional, with few exceptions that can barely count as exceptions. again with the Soulmates but Twisted thing....................................... and though ritsuka can strategize a little and rely on soubi's strength in battle, he's still quite separate from the fighter/sacrifice dynamic because this is not a mode he wants to operate in most of the time if ever. he wants a normal bf. </3
i know the way soubi functions as a fighter is seen to be a bit overkill or whatever by other pairs, but i think other characters' problems with soubi has always had more to do with 1. soubi being an exceptionally skilled fighter ("perfect," teacher's pet, comes from resentment/annoyance rather than a "wtf" place imo I COULD BE WRONG/FORGETFUL IDK) and 2. soubi changing sacrifices. I MEAN NO ONE HAS TO LIKE SOUBI BUT I do feel his intensity in his role as a fighter isn't what's considered to be strange about him by the other teams, and youji kinda says as much that soubi is considered a "perfect fighter" though this "perfect fighter" state is not to his or others' tastes necessarily. soubi is annoying and unlikable to other characters in the magic world but this has more to do with his relationship to ritsu, his blasphemies, and his personality than anything else. sort of like how seimei is seen as a criminal or enemy for his senseless murders and crimes against humanity or whatever but soubi isn't considered as on that same level of criminal even though he would've been the figure actually getting his hands dirty and carrying out the acts. soubi's the fighter/a tool, so his thoughts, feelings or intentions don't really matter. so clearly even in the most "sane" of fighter/sacrifice dynamics, or like just generally speaking in the magic world the idea of the fighter as a tool/property of the sacrifice is always reinforced and supported, somehow, even or specially when the sacrifice loves their fighter very much.............. but anyway ya ritsuka wants a normal bf. the devotion and attachment is still desired but if this bond is only possible through what is such a forced structure, then it's not real and whatever... is i guess ritsuka's feelings. it's not love if you were "ordered" and you can't love someone because you were "told to" and ritsuka will choose who he loves and his own fate outside of names and controlled bonds. but then ritsuka himself contradicts these ideas of freedom, notably in his relationship with his mother... like he will love his mother regardless idk it's complicated but his idea of a bond with her hinges on her being his Mother, his family, and ritsuka has to stay with and love her no matter what especially after seimei, even though his close proximity to her is a danger to his life. and then everything w/ ritsuka and seimei. UM *tucks hair behind ears* ANYWAY... their fight with yamato and kouya is significant too but heavier on yamato and kouya's ends. though yeah ritsuka strategizes and contributes to the fight some more and they have their bonds/seimei conversation after it's over
o_O
AND THEN I THINK THE FEARLESS FIGHT COMES NEXT which is my favorite fight in the whole series because soubi actually truly explains what's going on with ritsuka. this might not be the most significant of fights as pertaining to ritsuka/soubi reasons as for what goes on During the fight, but it is kind of significant to me because soubi is truly walking ritsuka through what's going on. continuing to kind of "train" ritsuka and gradually adjust him to the sacrifice/fighter way of being
before the fight, there's this moment between ritsuka/soubi touching on wat i just wrote about ritsuka and his mother
and then there's ritsuka/soubi's interaction which comes directly after the fight, after mimuro confirms seimei is alive
(right to left ofc...) LIKE UGH... this interaction is significant to them both but coming from different places i guess. they search for the same thing from each other and other people (belief, bonds, devotion, whatever "affection" might mean to them respectively) but to ritsuka, soubi comes from a more unstable, insensible place because the most important form of a bond or devotion to soubi is the fighter/sacrifice bond, and this is hard for ritsuka to stomach because this comes with orders (ordered to love/or being "meant to love" someone just because you are paired with them) and soubi/the fighter as property. there's a falseness to it but ritsuka is still attracted to the same dysfunction which make up those bonds because they promise attachment and unification. AND THEN OBIOUSLY TO SOUBI, THE IDEA OF BELIEVING IN/OR BEING ABLE TO BELIEVE IN RITSUKA IS *EVERYTHING* AND SOOO NECESSARY *BECAUSE* RITSUKA IS HIS SACRIFICE... UGH and then i believe their next fight after this is vs. nisei, which is originally what i wanted to write the most about and now i'm getting tired and lazy but. there is so much to be said about this fight so im just going to focus on my favorite part, ritsuka declaring soubi as his fighter, his one and only..................
ritsuka is strategizing but he feels for soubi and he does want to stay with and "commit to" soubi as his fighter. obviously this feels off and weird to ritsuka (questioning if this is the right thing to do, if he's manipulating soubi, assuming his feelings for soubi are "probably just pity") but he is beginning to truly understand this sort of declaration, and this dynamic, is important for soubi, it's how soubi sees the world and it's how soubi can understand his love for ritsuka. and ritsuka cares about and loves soubi too and he needs to be able to meet him kinda halfway (or like... compromise) on this, whether or not it's "right"... skipping ahead to volume 11
yea i don't know i'm leaving it at that
#Im sorry idk....... iwasted my entire day thinking about this#also my laptop died RIP so all i have is my tiny school netbook thing and ALL MY LOVELESS STUFF IS GONEEEEE i might have some stuff on a#hard drive but obviously as it stands. my netbook can't handle that..........im kinda so dumb and silly#text

Installed Slackware on my ASUS EeePC last night on a whim and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Especially considering that I had to install from an old IDE hard drive connected over USB because I forgot all my flash drives at school.

After seeing a post talking about setting a goal to write 200 words a day I've decided to give it a go. My aim is a book, but not a full novel -- if it's a chapbook or novella I'd be thrilled. I have vaguely pictured myself writing and illustrating a children's book at some point in time, but I've never seen myself pursuing capital w - Writing. And yet I am always thinking of stories and I'd like to push myself to flesh something out beyond a few paragraphs. No hard goals no stress no recriminations if I fail. Just going to see about setting a habit, and find out if it can lead to something beautiful and true.
#hard for me to set a habit to do anything every day#but typing 200 words is almost nothing!#just did my first session on the old netbook#last night after writing my apple story i was having dreams about it so i am taking that as a sign#writing#personal

I had to install python and run a script to mass download all my kindle books before the no more downloads deadline. i'm not meant to think about computers this hard. it's been like a decade since I had to think about computers this hard. i had to use a very kindly detailed tutorial with screenshots because i am out of practice of thinking about computers at all. the time to become a linux user is upon us, i fear.

Like the whole "DOOM runs on anything" meme is funny sure but technically you can run any program on any machine that has the processor, memory, and storage space for it. You may need to tweak some thing here and there to get it fully operational but really that's mostly what it hinges on.
I turned my windows netbook into a Debian server and then turned *that* into cloud-based storage I could dump and share and run any files I wanted to off my internet connection when I was in college by tying an external hard drive to it using an always-on connection. I still technically have the hard drive but I sold the netbook a long time ago. I also turned my MacBook from college into an always-on minecraft server for my college friends before Microsoft decided to give us actual multi-player support.
I also turned my MacBook into a windows OS emulator when I wanted to game because I got annoyed that Mac ports are usually poopoobad quality. So I would turn my MacBook on and then load up my windows os inside of the Mac os and then actually load the game.
Like yeah I went to school for programming but I actually learned how to do most of that as a kid because my dad had a computer that had no GUI, it was all command prompt and DOS. There are times when my current windows computers are annoying me because they won't do the thing I told them to do so I load up dos and then effectively go "I wasn't asking" at it.
#granted#I also taught myself html and css as a kid#and found javascript to be grating but otherwise understandable#sql and c++ was in high school when I went to tech school for programming#but anyway my point is that this stuff isn't super hard#the most annoying portion waa converting the netbook into a server#and only because its processor sucked so it really did not like the commands I was giving it#but it was also a 50 dollar laptop so like. deal. and do what I said.

Every time I open up my ancient iPad with its very second hand keyboard cover I am still struck with how absolutely incredible it is to have this kind of writing device readily available.
When I was a teenager laptops had like a 45 minute battery life and WiFi wasn’t a thing lmao how far we’ve come
#I was an early adopter of the netbook because the idea of a portable word processor that could actually be carried around was magic to me#technology has come so far so quickly#even looking back as I am a lot with the draggy age release to ten years ago#iPads didn’t really have this functionality yet so your only serious writing tool was a MacBook#it was the only thing with the proper software. do you know how expensive they were!!!
