The Banner of Ladonia (Micronation)

The flag of Ladonia is just, funny to me.

Behold, the Glorious Green.

Before we move on to the flag, let's discuss micronations. Micronations are not usually serious claims (looking at you, Sealand). As micronation suggests, the territory they 'claim' is tiny. They arise for various reasons, some because of border disputes, many as a joke.

However, Ladonia became a microstate as a statement for Free Speech and artistic liberty. The artist Lars Vilks created a sculpture (entitled Nimis) in a nature reserve in Skåne, Sweden in 1980. He was prosecuted by the government for placing the sculpture and he was convicted. The sculpture was vandalized and 2/3 of it were lost. Over the next decade, Vilks continued his sculpture work in the nature reserve, and was continually prosecuted.

in 1996, a higher court in Sweden declared that the Skåne court that had convicted Vilks and essentially over-rules their judgement. Though this didn't stop the Skåne authorities from reopening the case in 1998. The existence of Ladonia has been about preserving the art present in their claimed land and creating more art; not only in Ladonia proper but also around the world.

Their banner, nicknamed the Glorious Green, was designed in 1997 but standardized in 2008. The flag follows a 13:21 ratio and the entire flag is the same shade of green. The stitching process allows the cross to appear on embroidered flags. They actually had to specify how to display the Nordic cross on printed flags, and it was to print a small white outline for the Nordic cross.

The purpose of Ladonia is all about creative freedom and freedom of expression. The majority of citizens join (buy a citizenship) Ladonia to advocate for their ideals and preserve the legacy of Lars Vilks.

One of the bright sides of the storm delaying my travel plans and Christmas celebrations, is that I actually had time to finish these ornaments just in time!

The finished pieces are 20-count oatmeal colored aida fabric, with DMC 666 red thread, and mounted in medium tart tins by Yarn Tree.

Some sketches in my pattern book, including a design I scrapped. I made most of these designs by modifying common snowflake patterns I found online. Plus a few inspired by a Janlynn ornament cross stitch kit from the 1980's that I bought at a thrift shop.

And this post comes with a bonus blooper! This is what happens when I: (a) thought I knew the pattern well enough to stitch it without having my pattern book to look at, (b) was distracted while singing along to music, and (c) was stitching while tipsy! I had to unpick that part of the snowflake and try again. Oh well!

I enjoyed doing the colours and materials board. I was beginning to get the hang of photoshop and had more of an idea of what I was doing.

The colour palette is displayed by using a coloured cup with a same coloured object and embroidery thread alongside. Nordic Nest (2022).

The moiré wallpaper is made in a special way of superimposing two patterns and adds a unique and textured pattern. The word moire comes from the French word watered. The result is a swirling pattern and is ideal for part of the dining room decoration. TM Interiors (2022). The rug is made of jute and a sandy colour and looks natural. The way it is stitched together to form an oval shape gives it a raised ripple effect. Rugvista (2022). The chair looks comfortable with a soft padded base and stitched back. The blue and oak coloured legs go well with everything. Lewis, J (2022). The table is oak coloured and of a clean simple design. Lewis, J (2022). The side table has a white marbled base and an oak top. It looks cool and neat. This and the cutlery, glasses and 2 mugs all come from Nordic Nest. The blue tinted glasses look cool and refreshing and the wavy cutlery is something a bit different but is in keeping with the trend. Vogue Knitting Vintage Collection Which is Mostly 1960s

When I saw the title of this book printed in 2001, I got very excited by the subtitle: Classic Knits from the 1930s-1960s. Which is misleading as the overwhelming majority of the garment patterns are from the 1960s, are made of bulky yarns and are pretty simplistic. (there are also accessories and children’s wear and 5 men’s wear patterns). For the 1960s, see the multi-photo image with the blue Chunky Aran, the grey Chunky Turtleneck, and the Chunky Coat all from 1968 as well as the chunky Nordic-Style Ski Sweater from 1963. The lavender Mohair Turtleneck in 1964 is chunky in gauge but boasts a more interesting all-over cable pattern. Fashion in general tended to simplify in keeping with the Baby Boomer’s rejection of sophisticated styling in favor of simple, youthful styling. And younger people had fewer hand skills and no great intention of learning more. But if you want simple, shapeless patterns in bulky yarns, why bother going vintage when they abound in modern knitting patterns?

The older patterns tend to require finer yarns and more complex shaping and details. There is 1 sweater from the 1930s, the Tailored Seed-Stitch top you see in blue with white buttons in the multi-sweater photo, and 1 sweater from the 1940s which you see in taupe kitty corner from the blue, the Short-Sleeved Silk Top. The cover has a Cashmere Turtleneck from 1951. In total, there are 10 sweaters from 1950s patterns including the white boucle yarn Button-Front Jacket from 1954 that you see here, which has no shaping through the waist and the two Midriff Tops from 1952, ditto as they have no waists.

The lack of shaping even in some of the 1950s patterns gives you some idea of the amount of skill and effort that the editors imagined in their audience. They may well have been right. The only signs of wear in this book which I got from a public library, are the pages with the pink scarf which I end with here. It is a clever yet very simply made design that illustrates the basic principles of knitting laid out in that classic, Mary Thomas’s Knitting Book: horizontal welts of knitting naturally flare and vertical ones, aka ribbing, naturally shrink. So all you need to do is use the horizontal at the ends of this scarf and the vertical along its body. And yes, I do intend to whip one up myself.
