I was looking forward to visiting the B&O Railroad Museum in Oakland, MD yesterday, but unfortunately it was closed.  Note to me: plan ahead.  Like so many of Central Appalachia’s lovely little mountain towns, Oakland’s history and culture are inextricably bound to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad line that hauled coal and timber out of the mountains starting in mid to late 1800′s. Railroad buffs will love this museum, and the town offers various offbeat shops, an awesome farmers market, and other local institutions, including Englanders’ throwback soda shop and lunch counter cum collectables shop. The blueberry pancakes are bomb.
