You know what, Nationality time :

1. Captain Barnacles 🇷🇺 -

I know that Barnacles, in the show at least, should live in the arctic circle around Canada.

And it’s true for this AU. Captain Barnacles and Bianca are half Natives and Russians. This inspiration came from “Dangerous Ways to School” where the setting was in a Russian village called Oymyakon and also a Native tribe that live near the arctic circle .

It would be interesting representation, since they live in the Arctic Circle and there are plenty of cultures there. But I also have a soft spot for Russians so… 🤫

I didn’t research a whole lot, but they could be either Inuit or Yupik (Eskimo?). There’s a difference between the two when it comes to their geography, but I’ll decide it later in the future when I have enough evidence for Barnacles’ and Bianca’s nationality.!

He knows Russian very well.

I also like to think they went to a missionary English school to learn the fundamentals. Which is where they got their British accents.

2. Kwazii 🇮🇹 -

I love myself a screaming pirate-enthusiast Italian!

Kwazii’s parents were all dead, but thankfully he already adapted to his Italian heritage.

His heritage comes from Italy and Italy is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, and ancient pirates lived along the Mediterranean Sea, FIGHT ME.

There aren’t much Italian pirates in “Ancient times”, but that didn’t mean that there weren’t none of them. They were overlooked but found in Spanish navies.

Too much information, not in the mood for researching, keep an eye out for future updates.

Kwazii knows a lot of Italian slang and phrases that it often slips.

octonauts ATLA au 🤲

Barnacles is an EXTREMELY powerful waterbender from the North Pole, with a strong love for icebending—he defaults to it most of the time. He can use all subforms of waterbending, but they're a bit harder.

Kwazii's the Avatar, but he's still a pirate AND he's a natural firebender, so he still has that "scary and dangerous" reputation. He's afraid of using his firebending, because he hates it. Barnacles is teaching him waterbending, and he's pretty good at it. So far he sucks at earthbending, and his airbending is okay, but if he gets worked up it can accidentally come out as fire... which, yeah.

Peso is an airbender, and the first one in his family. He's not very skilled at bending, and he can't fly very well, and sometimes wishes he was a waterbender, like Barnacles. That way he'd be "stronger", and could utilize its healing abilities. He has an epiphany later on in the middle of S3 that makes him realize how powerful he really is, and he learns to fly :)

Tweak is an earthbender, which she inherited from her dad (maybe*). Like Barnacles, she has a love and preference for a specific subtype—in her case it's metalbending. She's very good at it. It's how she builds GUPs so fast.

Shellington is a waterbender. He doesn't use it very much, mainly because he's Not Great at controlling it—so you'll either end up getting lightly spit on or completely drenched in a tsunami by accident.

Dashi is a non-bender (with water tribe ancestry), which puts her at a disadvantage during some missions. However! She has all of her skills from the Canon Universe, plus the extra adaptiveness seen in non-benders in ATLA (Sokka, Suki, etc).

Inkling is also a non-bender, but he has studied the elements and different bending techniques his whole life. He's Kwazii's Monk Gyatso but with less dying.

Calico Jack is Kwazii's Uncle Iroh. I needn't explain further. His main goal is to teach Kwazii to be less afraid of his firebending.

Natquik is a waterbender, who taught Barnacles everything he knows. He got his penchant for icebending from him. He pretty much invented it. He survived Antarctica by ✨ Becoming One With The Ice™ ✨. He doesn't just study icequakes, he can make them. He can probably spiritbend.

*I'm TORN between making Marsh be an earthbender or a waterbender. If he's an earthbender, then he can't metalbend like Tweak can, but he's still very strong. Like, scarily strong 👀. IF HE'S A WATERBENDER, then he's a swampbender, full stop.

Tracker is an airbender, mainly because of how he's clearly paralleling Peso's arc in AnB. He was the only airbender in his Polar Scouts troop, and he got picked on for it a bit—but Barnacles thought it was cool as heck, and that's how they became friends.

Do I need to explain Paani being a waterbender? No I do not. He's probably VERY powerful, but very chillax about it. He successfully freaks out everyone who witnesses him bend every time. He can part the seas like freaking Moses.

Pearl is a waterbender like Shellington; she's not super strong, but she has a LOT more control over it than he does. Peri will be a waterbender as well, but he hasn't unlocked it yet. He's trying very hard because he wants to be like his mum and uncle SO badly.

Min could easily be a bender of any kind and it would make sense, but I kinda wanna say she's a non-bender. Just cuz ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Earthbender Ryla. That's all. It makes it a lot easier to get out of caves when she's stuck. She's very casual about it. So casual, that most people either forget or don't even realize she's a bender until it comes up. Then they're like "oh yeah." as she literally moves mountains.

Airbender Pinto, who has no clue how to control it. Whenever he gets frustrated with himself, he accidentally creates small tornadoes. He can also fly! He likes to brag about it. a lot. mainly to Peso.

Waterbender Koshi, who hasn't discovered that about herself yet. She's in for a fun time when she figures it out. Remember how happy she was when she got her Octowatch? Yeah :) 10x that. I also imagine their family is full of late bloomers, but because of Dashi she has pretty low expectations for herself right now.

Context: It been about 15 or so years since Shellington last saw his mum. She cracked, even more than before. It didn’t help that it was the anniversary of his fathers death a mere week ago. She tracked down the group and is toying with him psychologically (the other octonauts don’t believe him, no matter what he says she combats it with her act) before attempting the final deed.

After I drew that art. I started thinking about their design. And the ones that suffered the most from the headcanon design were Dashi, Peso and Tweak.. ,nvm

(If there is no orientation flag in the pride headcanons, then they are hetero)

Their age is by human standards.

I also wanted to add flags of countries there, for headcanons of their nationalities. But I haven’t figured out where Kwazii comes from yet. Aeaeaah

And about vegimals. I don't know how many there are. But I'll figure it out later. :)

What a glorious peacock of a man! Perhaps not the greatest captain seafaring-wise; but Stede's a fabulous captain personnel-wise. A captain who makes sure is crew is fed, watered, has enough enrichment in arts & crafts, and does the voices during the bedtime story!

Barnacles has autism swag!!! also he's very cool and silly but also productive and i love him :)))))

he also plays the accordion (badly) if that matters

Isabela is the pirate scourge of two coastlines, four nations, and countless tavern floors. She's equally skilled with dagger and insult, and it's hard to know which cuts deeper. It's rare to see her in one place for long, but with her ship reduced to timbers, Isabela's had to content herself with whatever bounty Kirkwall has to offer. And that means no end of headaches for the rich and foolish, and no end of amusement for her. She's as desired as she is feared, which is to say, a lot and often. Fall on her blade, or at her feet—a win is a win, in her book. Shipwrecked, hounded, Isabela hasn't decided if she's cornered yet. She's having too much fun.

Working on a wee comic with the octonauts grampa squad bc animation burnout is hitting HARD

I realized I dont have established designs for Natquick or Ranger Marsh, so heres them in both their work outfits, plus casual clothes ^^

Right- So, some notes ab their work fits:

you may have noticed these guys are my only octonauts designs w/ proper shoes. There is a reason for that, and no its not just bc i figured out how anthro footwear works.

Ranger marsh gets thick soled boots because working in the everglades means venomous snakes and spiders such as coral snakes and black widows- which would not be fun to step on barefoot. Even for a rabbit with thick fur on their feet. Not to mention, said fur also traps mud very easily.

As for Natquick, He gets fluffy boots because his paw-pads on his feet are very sensitive. Arctic foxes have thick fur not just on their bodies, but on their paws as well to protect them from the cold. Natquick however is much less fluffy than animals of his species tend to be. This is because during his time in the Antarctic- there were struggle periods where it became hard to find food. He became malnourished and started shedding fur. As a result he spend more time in the research station, and the rough floors weren't exactly the most pleasant to walk on.

Other than that, its basically exactly the same as their cannon fits besides minor color changes.

Now for their Casual Fits:

Natquick's is a cozy sweater, + a Tshirt Tracker gifted him. :D it reminds him of summer, which is certainly comforting in the cold. The scar on his leg? a result of frost-bite. While he was doing feild research in the Antarctic- and avalanche caught him of guard. His leg got caught under some ice. He waited there for almost a day before a group of penguins found him and helped him out. (i dont have a story for the scar on his snout yet)

As for Ranger Marsh, his is the same shorts he always wears, + a tanktop. when he was much younger, he went on a family camping trip at a national park. As their family traveled a lot, it was a pine-forest, somewhere in North America rather than the swampy everglades he was used to. the trip was what made him wanna be a park ranger. The tank-top was something he had gotten from the parks gift shop. As for the wrappings on his shoulder- The green patches of his fur are much more sensitive to the harsh sun than the brown patches are. He does his best to shield himself from the sun- by using things like his hat and working in the shade. But Sunburns still happen, and they can be pretty nasty at times.

4. Dashi 🇦🇺 -

She’s Australian.

What else is there to say?

Growing up, she surfed the waves and even got to teach her little sister that.

She visited the outback at least 32 times throughout her lifetime.

I like to think she breaks out into her “Steve Irwin” (bless his soul) voice with her camera and goes, “This underwater sea creature is venomous! Deadly! But also— stinking cute!” And then cues into educational mode.

She got into surfing competitions and won a few of them, but doesn’t like to boast about it.

5. Tweak - 🇺🇸🇯🇵

I made this one really interesting.

She is Japerican. Half Japanese and half American.

Her father is a giant Flemish rabbit and her biological mom is a fairly tall, but way shorter than Ranger Marsh, lop bunny.

She was raised in America and came to Japan as a teenager. She couldn’t fit in because she barely knew any Japanese and got bullied for it.

So she became part of a gang with school girls who went against the status quo.

Mind you, this was all in the 60s-80s so they were actually sick looking.

Shortly after, Marsh moved back with Tweak in the US for Tweak’s internship and Marsh’s old position as a Ranger for the Everglades.

Tweak has a bit of Japanese in her, but Southern all around.

She got Shellington to love Asian culture more than over. (He’s absolutely obsessed with it)

OCTONAUTS HEADCANONS: WORLD EDITION

HEAVILY BASED ON THIS POST, FULL CREDITS !

— there are parallel cities and countries to our world, and the locations of their major cities and counties are all the same

— most animals live in places close to or in their natural habitat, but cities like London and New York have animals from all over the place mingling (but to a certain level of logic like you’re less likely to see a polar bear or a reindeer living in South America)

— many of the cities have slightly different designs to accommodate for the variety of species living in them

— the world population is split between anthro and non-anthro animals, because the Octonauts are clearly anthro but the animals they rescue aren’t

— there used to be a lot of conflict between the two, but now most places don’t care and are designed to accommodate both kinds of animals (like Tweak and Sandy are friends)

— whether or not predation of other animals (especially the non-anthro) is okay is a pretty heated debate in their society

— it’s possible for some non-anthro animals (most likely mammals) to learn to walk and to use their paws (hands?) like anthro’s but it’s very difficult (and vice versa if an anthro wants to learn to be more like a non-anthro)

— there’s also a United Nations equivalent who are tasked with keeping peace between species— they have a representative for each major species of each biome and with groups such as rainforest or polar regions working as groups, or having one collective vote on large scale issues (they’re also the ones who fund the Octonauts)

— their world is just as, if not more technologically advanced in some areas than ours (I mean hey, they manage to hide whole helmets in small collars!)

— humans never existed so many animals evolved in almost identical ways to fill that niche; some did, but some didn’t, which is why there are non-anthro animals as well

— most of, if not all, the world share a collective language that basically makes cross-species communication easier

— adding: each genus shares a language (with species having, like, slightly different versions, e.g.: wolves and dogs have slightly different pronunciations or slang, but sound very similar when compared to a fox) but all animals are taught the universal language

— like all things, the Octonauts probably have a few haters and enemies (because no world is perfect) and they sometimes have to watch their backs when at ports to resupply

— adding: they probably get into conflict with people who overfish, or people who pollute the ocean or oil rig people

— most animals have extended lifespans that are closer in length to humans

— some objects we use that usually have simple handles have grips, or whole shaped loops for paws to make holding them easier

— coat colour possibility and variations are far greater than in our world (I mean— Tweak’s GREEN and she also glows in the dark), and it either developed as a result of evolution, OR there was a nuclear war and some species’ genes were affected by nuclear radiation several generations ago; or both

— the Polar Scouts, in terms of world history, are a very recent invention—they were, most likely, introduced as a way to get young polar bear cubs to grow up in an environment that encourages equality and helping others (based on this post)

— the Polar Scouts programme was put in place by a Polar/Arctic sector of that United Nations style group, and whilst it HAS BEEN very successful (crime rates and the amount of violent polar bears has dropped A LOT), there are still quite a few bad eggs

— there are stereotypes about different animals; e.g. polar bears are expected to be violent and cruel, and enough live up to this stereotype that it persists

— adding: which is why Barnacles is really careful, patient, and understanding when helping other creatures

— although some countries are still using oils and plastics, society is gradually switching to sources more helpful to the environment

Propaganda: He's a nurse who's never done sport before but his little brother believes in him so hard that he has to try, he does a whole training montage. When he competes he gets mocked the whole time by the big arrogant fan favourite but when he has the chance to win the bully gets hurt and trapped underwater and his nurse instincts win out so Peso goes back to help him and they get joint first. Very sweet guy, very clumsy, very funny I love him

It occurred to me that not everyone is going to read Rise and Fall (Rude! Just kidding!🙃), so I figured maybe I should also introduce Angel here. So, that's what this is (may add to this as I go):

Physical Appearance: Longish dark brown curly hair; pale blue eyes with a streak of brown in her right eye; freckles; short; pudgy; wears a purple and white striped T-shirt and dark blue overalls (I wish I could add a picture, but I can't draw to save my life.)

Backstory:

When Angel was eight, she moved from England to Australia with her parents and her three siblings. In Australia, they lived on a boat.

However, while out on the boat when Angel was ten, a huge storm hit. A lightning strike set fire to the boat and killed her father. A gigantic wave hit, throwing Angel and her mother overboard, resulting in the death of the latter.

Angel held onto her backpack in the water and washed up on a deserted island. Six days later, Shellington found her, suffering from hypothermia and a broken leg. Luckily, the Octonauts came to her rescue, but Angel must adjust to life without her family and with an unusual new family, having learned that animals can talk. To make things worse, she's scared of Captain Barnacles.

Fortunately, she was able to get over her fear. Although, it did take her four months. She got stuck on the side of a cliff while rescuing a little penguin chick (one of Peso's cousins) and the Captain offered her his paw to pull her to safety.

The Octonauts were pretty shocked when Angel hugged the Captain after that. Until then, she would scream every time he came near her!
