1. Captain Barnacles 🇷🇺 -

I know that Barnacles, in the show at least, should live in the arctic circle around Canada.

And it’s true for this AU. Captain Barnacles and Bianca are half Natives and Russians. This inspiration came from “Dangerous Ways to School” where the setting was in a Russian village called Oymyakon and also a Native tribe that live near the arctic circle .

It would be interesting representation, since they live in the Arctic Circle and there are plenty of cultures there. But I also have a soft spot for Russians so… 🤫

I didn’t research a whole lot, but they could be either Inuit or Yupik (Eskimo?). There’s a difference between the two when it comes to their geography, but I’ll decide it later in the future when I have enough evidence for Barnacles’ and Bianca’s nationality.!

The blue on his eyes is face paint.

He knows Russian very well.

I also like to think they went to a missionary English school to learn the fundamentals. Which is where they got their British accents.

2. Kwazii 🇮🇹 -

I love myself a screaming pirate-enthusiast Italian!

Kwazii’s parents were all dead, but thankfully he already adapted to his Italian heritage.

His heritage comes from Italy and Italy is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, and ancient pirates lived along the Mediterranean Sea, FIGHT ME.

There aren’t much Italian pirates in “Ancient times”, but that didn’t mean that there weren’t none of them. They were overlooked but found in Spanish navies.

Too much information, not in the mood for researching, keep an eye out for future updates.

Kwazii knows a lot of Italian slang and phrases that it often slips.

I made a cover art for Pirates on the Horizon AU. I got to experiment with different pens again and I really like how it worked out. Once again, I used the Johnston Tartan for Seamus’s kilt.

As you can see there has been a theme last month. But oh damn, I read more than I thought. Aside from participating in the Plus Size Readathon (which in total I believe I read 8 books) I also have been completing my obsession with pirates. It's summer, and it just felt right to be reading about pirates or sea life.

As well as reading more nonfiction this year. I has a goal of 5 and lost count how many I actually read. Overall, August has been a great reading month. With September being Latinx Heritage Month and going through October, I will have the opportunity to read more books that I have been wanting to read. xoxo

Hi there, I'm Min / Becki (any pronouns)! I like drawing both fan and original art! I'm primarily a cartoonist and illustrator, and I aim to craft narratives that are fun and entertaining but also speak to the human condition. Comics are my one true love; I adore reading and making them, but also nerding out about the technical stuff like paneling, lettering, thumbnailing... You know, the stuff no one cares about. I was thinking of making her “Co-Captain” instead of Head Captain. Anyways a lil bit about her : She had been registered into Foster Care at the age of 3 and met Rutabaga Koreaf, they hit it off instantly and refused to be separated whenever they had different Foster parents. They spent a couple of years back and forth at Ranger Marsh’s and eventually get adopted by him.

Krim’s nature is often portrayed as stoic and an optimistic leader. She has no trouble with being distracted and stays on task. She has a bit of military and navy expertise but actually likes the pirate aesthetic. Although, she’s not a “pirate” pirate, she can definitely be Captain. Her archeologist sister, Rutabaga, actually encouraged her style because it’s like seeing it in real life time. So that’s it.

Krim likes Italian and European dishes. Often than not, she actually enjoys talking about History too. She’s kind of a History nerd like her sister if you think about it. Krim can get her hands dirty without a problem. And mentoring others is another skill she unintentionally developed. She’s overly protective of her crew’s safety but it doesn’t mean that she’s motherly without punishments. Captain Barnacles was a great example to her when she job shadowed him, and she’s still learning new things from the job.

Eh, she’s a little boring. But after college is a different story to tell— eventually.

I'm curious how Zoros fight with King comes across in Japanese, especially his declaration of being king of hell

so what i find really exciting and interesting about this development is something i do think is somewhat obscured in translation, which is now it sets up zoro as a parallel and successor to rayleigh.

rayleigh's epithet in japanese is 冥王/meiou, which is generally translated into english as 'dark king,' since that's the literal translation of the kanji. however, 冥王/meiou/'dark king' is also the term used in japanese to refer to hades/pluto, the greek and roman god of the underworld. the king of hell, in other words.

as we know, zoro's newest sword, the one that was formerly oden's and which he struggles with throughout this fight, is named 閻魔/enma. this is also the name of a king of hell- enma is another name for yama, the buddhist wrathful deity of the underworld.

after answering king's challenge and saying that yes, he does have the will to become a king himself in order to fulfill his promises, zoro starts using the word 閻王/enou in his attack names, a word which the manga emphasizes to show its importance. this is another title of yama, and also mirrors rayleigh's epithet basically exactly, being a two-kanji name of a deity seen as the king of hell, where the second kanji is 王/ou ('king').

rayleigh is associated with hades, zoro is associated with yama. both are kings of hell- zoro is just somewhat more buddhist about it, which is fitting, given his wano heritage and his trend of invoking buddhist theology in his attack names. i would not at all be surprised if, if zoro ever does get a new epithet to replace his old kaizokugari/'pirate hunter' one, it's 閻王/enou.

My Little Pirates, part 2 // (( part 1 ))

Second Verse Same As The First. You will view my equines.

We started with the monster trio, so now introducing the navigator Citrine Compass, Tall Tale the sharpshooter, and the doctor Tony Tony Chopper Citrine Compass (aka Nami) is an incredible navigator, with a special talent in cartography. Her skills for predicting the weather are downright uncanny, a rarity even among pegasi. She's light on her hooves, quick as a flash, and is going to steal your wallet as we speak. Tall Tale (aka Usopp) the earth pony sharpshooter and master storyteller. His mark is meant to represent the more magical aspect of this skill, as his stories are so good, sometimes they just seem to come true! In reality, he does truly have a form of instinctual future sight, and one that manifests in this odd way. (think... pinkie sense.) His heritage lets him get in tune with nature much easier, and lets his skills as a sniper overlap perfectly with his skills as as a botanist. Chopper the reindeer is an odd case indeed. A young member of one of the rarer species found in the world, Chopper is an unfortunate case of a reindeer that never developed magic. Unable to levitate and fly like the rest of his herd, he was simply left behind-- but was fortunately rescued by a kindly doctor. His magic never developed, but he makes the most of it regardless. He's an incredible doctor, and his work in scientific fields across the board has been exceptional. He may paint on a cutiemark to feel more like his friends, but these days, Chopper is more than proud of who he is, and the reindeer he's become.

(Note: I had no idea reindeer existed in mlp! apparently there's a holiday special. The more you know.)

thinking about samus' radical design changes from the onset of fusion and how they relate to her self-image. the x parasite didnt just steal her armour, it stole her identity too, her chozo power armour was the one connection she had left to the people that made her who she is, and it was infected and cut out like a cyst and then it quite literally haunted her. her default appearence is then one that is stripped away, laid bare, and shes far more vulnerable.

the only thing that could save her was the most destructive legacy of the chozo, the metroids. then over the course of fusion, she learns that the federation has been cloning metroids for weaponisation themselves, the humanity shes so desperate to hold onto is acting no different to the space pirates, looking to control and conquer. everything she thought she was has either been torn from her or corrupted beyond recognition.

and then dread follows up on this so well by introducing raven beak and the mawkin tribe. we always saw the chozo from this idealised lens, a generous and benevolent civilisation that shared their bounties with the universe. but the truth is that was only their best and brightest, the real reason theres chozo ruins on nearly every planet in the galaxy is because they were conquerors. they were colonisers. and samus herself was yet another soldier being indoctrinated into war for the sake of raven beak's ego. just another weapon. just another metroid.

any vestiges of samus' heritage and the legacies she holds onto have had their facades stripped away for what they are, and its up to samus to define herself. she chooses to become a metroid, the ultimate warrior, because she can defy that legacy and scrounge some good from the dirty hands she was dealt. quiet robe inspires her to do this, by holding onto a fraction of his kindness even after assimilation by the x, because that altruism can shine through no matter how dark it gets.

metroid is about growing up in a fascist society and peeling away the layers of obfuscation and deciding what you want to fight for. also youre transgender

Toon Zelda redesigns! I've never been fond of the Toon Zelda design, and these girls deserve some individuality. Design notes and rambles below the cut :D

(time to turn the proper grammar off i aint capitalizing all this. warning: i am verbose)

first up, tmc zelda!

shes the one most like toon zelda, since i felt like the vibes fit the *most* (though not a lot). also, with her place on the timeline, i could justify a lot of bits, like the wings and the cape

the cape! obvs it comes from the toon zelda base design, but also it involves skyloftian fashion! i take the timeline as a challenge, and i once saw a take somewhere that the skyloftians all wear their family crests (most often birds lol) on their person. zelda here (and link too) do just that, wearing their family crests on little caplets. on the back is, of course the royal crest

i went very cutesy princess for her. tmc has such a *whimsical* vibe that i feel is very. muted? by the fact its stuck with the toon style. so i wanted to put in that vibe here. also her sprites make it look like her skirt is super poofy, so how could i not?

curly hair: i wanted something interesting, and most zeldas have straight hair. so! adds to the cuteness

i didnt draw it so well but she (and link) both have very sleepy expressions. zelda especially just has a sleepy expression in her sprite, its quite adorable.

shes not as decked out as other princesses, cuz i see tmc taking place before the royal family really starts to get *royal* as we see it. shes still of course got a tiara and some embroidery tho.

Tetra! her base design isnt all that changed from the original. her name is a fun hc of mine tho. i think "von Hyrule" sounds better as a surname than just "hyrule". shes not zelda, but shes still a descendant.

(WW) princess z (as i call her)

I went more oot zelda vibes for her, since she would be closer, temporally, to oot. i also went very warm, since ive never seen the flood as a *warm* endeavor.

shes got the shoulder danglies, as most zeldas have shoulder armor of some kind. the danglies instead of actual armor are supposed to kind of evoke a royal sea captain kind of vibe.

shes ghostly, with a fish-eyed stare. shes been dead and gone for a long time. shes also a bit taller and a few years older than tetra (as of ww). shes just some spectre the king saw in tetra, not at all a close match

tetra, being smaller than princess z, doesnt fit into the clothes. the dress is too big for her (as is in canon gd that skirt is WAY too long for her), the coat is baggy. the role of a princess *literally* does not fit her.

the ribbons! theyre my replacement for the wings, and they represent the wind in the game! since its represented by white lines, the ribbons are a perfect symbolic match. (also, a note, tetras hair is shorter and coarser than princess z's)

i mostly bullshitted the blue panel but the vague idea i gave it was 'a hope for the triforce to give good fortunes to the people' (pictured as dots, mostly behind her arms)

Pirate Queen Tetra

ph! about a year has passed, and tetra has really grown into her own! as well as literally grown!

shes still tetra, pirate and captain, but shes incorporated that royal heritage into her identity: quite literally! she made piecemeal of the original outfit (what was left of it anyway after the fight), and added bits and pieces to her new life.

she also takes full advantage of said heritage to call herself pirate queen. its great for branding. whos gonna say she CANT go by pirate queen?

the seagull feather is from Aryll. only crew member tetra wears a trinket from (who can say no to that ball of sunshine! certainly not tetra)

not many notes. yall can see whats there. (also she still wears her hair in a bun, its just in a low bun (you can almost see it) when she wears her hat)

st zelda!

first note is: shes not a princess! shes an heiress of the company tetra had made and left behind. hence her title of Lady zelda. ("new hyrule" rly just like-- the ending of ww was *literally* that hyrule is dead and thats okay. how did they miss that :sob emoji:) also calling her Lady Zelda fits with the train vibes

shes in a 1880s style bustle dress because 1) i am OBSESSED with bustle dresses. i love them. so much. 2) the more historical vibe works really well with trains! also a lot of the other outfits in the game have late victorian vibes, so shes certainly not out of place.

her hat (and gloves): any proper lady has a hat on when going about town, however, when she gets body snatched, she pulled out her hatpin to use (ineffectively) as a weapon (she IS tetras great-great-granddaughter), causing her to lose her hat *and* hairdo.

shes still got the hatpin in her ghost form, too. she uses it to threaten people for funsies

Ribbons! on the topic of hairdo, her ribbons! visually tying her to tetras design, the ribbons here instead take on the image of train tracks, with her pin (on the left side) evoking a train engine. the pin also makes her look rich and girly. when her hair comes undone, this makes the ribbons all loose, like how the train tracks disappear in game. (the hat also kinda connects her to tetra)
