Regarding the DeepSeek AI Hysteria:

Text of posting:
To people who see the performance of DeepSeek and think: "'China is surpassing the US in AI." You are reading this wrong. The correct reading is: "Open source models are surpassing proprietary ones." DeepSeek has profited from open research and open source (e.g. PyTorch and Llama from Meta). They came up with new ideas and built them on top of other people's work. Because their work is published and open source, everyone can profit from it. That is the power of open research and open source.

What are the features of an open source platform?
Open Source Development
An open-source platform is a type of software that makes its source code available to everyone. Anyone can view, use, change, and share the code freely. With the rise of Open Source Development, more businesses and developers choose open-source platforms because of their flexibility, transparency, and community support. Let’s look at the key features that make open-source platforms so popular.
Free and Open Access -
One of the most best and dominant features of an open-source platform is that it’s freely available. While the users can download, install, and use their software and portals without paying for a license or any additional resources. This is considered as a significant benefit for the startups and developers with limited budgets and lower cash surplus.
Customizable and Flexible -
Open Source Development allows and grants the users to modify and develop their code to fit their specific needs. Whether it’s changing the interface, adding new features, or fixing bugs, open-source platforms give complete control to the user.
Community-Driven Support -
Open-source platforms usually have large communities of developers and users. These communities and joint groups share knowledge, fix issues, and improve overall responses for the software over time. Forums, documentation, and online discussions make it an easy process to get help and stay updated as the users or partners dive in for assistance.
Frequent Updates and Improvements -
With open-source projects, improvements come fast. Developers from around the world contribute updates, security patches, and new features regularly. This keeps the software current and efficient, driven by the power of Open Source Development.
Transparency and Security -
Because the code is open, anyone can inspect it for flaws or vulnerabilities. This level of transparency helps identify and fix security issues faster than with closed-source software. Users also know exactly what the software is doing behind the scenes.
No Vendor Lock-In -
Open-source development platforms allow the users to host, change, or move their software as needed. You’re not tied to one company or limited by their policies—giving you more flexibility and independence.
Open-source platforms offer powerful features like cost-effectiveness, customization, and strong community support. Thanks to Open Source Development, they continue to grow and evolve, helping users build better, more innovative solutions. Open Source Development encourages innovation, customization, and collaboration, while closed-source development offers more control and official support as this results in a better approach towards open source platforms.
Businesses can rely on open-source system partners and developers with companies and experts like Suma Soft, IBM, and Cyntexa for a hassle-free operational journey. These industry and professional experts ensure a smooth transition with custom solutions and advanced security measures with ongoing support, allowing the companies to maximize the benefits of modern digital infrastructure with the help of Open Source Platform.

Or, to look at the situation from another angle:

Text of posting:
To people who see the performance of DeepSeek and think:
"'China is surpassing the US in AI."
You are reading this wrong. The correct reading is:
"Open source models are surpassing proprietary ones."
DeepSeek has profited from open research and open source (e.g. PyTorch and Llama from Meta). They came up with new ideas and built them on top of other people's work.
Because their work is published and open source, everyone can profit from it. That is the power of open research and open source.
I am very wary of people going "China does it better than America" because most of it is just reactionary rejection of your overlord in favor of his rival, but this story is 1. absolutely legit and 2. way too funny.
US wants to build an AI advantage over China, uses their part in the chip supply chain to cut off China from the high-end chip market.
China's chip manufacturing is famously a decade behind, so they can't advance, right?
They did see it as a problem, but what they then did is get a bunch of Computer Scientists and Junior Programmers fresh out of college and funded their research in DeepSeek. Instead of trying to improve output by buying thousands of Nvidia graphics cards, they tried to build a different kind of model, that allowed them to do what OpenAI does at a tenth of the cost.
Them being young and at a Hedgefund AI research branch and not at established Chinese techgiants seems to be important because chinese corporate culture is apparently full of internal sabotage, so newbies fresh from college being told they have to solve the hardest problems in computing was way more efficient than what usually is done. The result:
American AIs are shook. Nvidia, the only company who actually is making profit cause they are supplying hardware, took a hit. This is just the market being stupid, Nvidia also sells to China. And the worst part for OpenAI. DeepSeek is Open Source.
Anybody can implement deepseek's model, provided they have the hardware. They are totally independent from DeepSeek, as you can run it from your own network. I think you will soon have many more AI companies sprouting out of the ground using this as its base.

What does this mean? AI still costs too much energy to be worth using. The head of the project says so much himself: "there is no commercial use, this is research."
What this does mean is that OpenAI's position is severely challenged: there will soon be a lot more competitors using the DeepSeek model, more people can improve the code, OpenAI will have to ask for much lower prices if it eventually does want to make a profit because a 10 times more efficient opensource rival of equal capability is there.
And with OpenAI or anybody else having lost the ability to get the monopoly on the "market" (if you didn't know, no AI company has ever made a single cent in profit, they all are begging for investment), they probably won't be so attractive for investors anymore. There is a cheaper and equally good alternative now.
AI is still bad for the environment. Dumb companies will still want to push AI on everything. Lazy hacks trying to push AI art and writing to replace real artists will still be around and AI slop will not go away. But one of the main drivers of the AI boom is going to be severely compromised because there is a competitor who isn't in it for immediate commercialization. Instead you will have a more decentralized open source AI field.
Or in short:

I continue to be incredibly fucking baffled by the number of youtubers and fan artists going, "The problem with AI is that it monetizes somebody else's IP without them getting any of the revenue stream! Anyway if you want to commission me to draw a Disney character the info is in my bio."
I seriously don't see how they cannot grasp the connection, it seems impossibly obvious to me.
It is weird to literally make your living (Or your side hustle) monetizing somebody else's artwork and then make PSAs about how bad it is to do that.
It's like if back in the day it had been a bunch of Napster users sharing the "You wouldn't download a car" ads.
#they also seem intent on destroying open source AI projects#while leaving the big IP monopolies free to develop licensing agreements with AI companies#Which feels short-sighted#To say the least

"He is back and he is seeking revenge!!" That’s what one of my teammates said after we wrapped up a big performance upgrade on a server that was… let’s say, not performing its best. Highs and lows, right? Complex, data-heavy, fast, reliable, and done for the best 'top dogs' in the game (me included).
And then another kind of thing... I was talking with a friend who’s been struggling to find a job in his field (he's studying management, which is a solid and common path). So, why not help a little bit? (That is what is in the image, do not call me a click baiter*)
I strongly believe that if you're struggling to get into any area, a nice way to present yourself is by having a page—it can be pure HTML/CSS or a cloned repo with some kind of "personal website template" using all the NodeJS you want.
Then, turn it into a DNS like "yourname-myprofession.com" so you can show a clean, well-designed QR Code with your avatar during interviews. It’s a cleanest way possible to present your résumé and experience. Tech skills are like magic, especially for those who haven't seen it before.

i need more mutuals who are into coding and engineering!! more info under the cut!!
I planned to become an electrical engineer like my stepdad but then I decided to change my path to programming. I'm currently studying at technikum (<- wikipedia link so I don't have to explain the whole polish learning system), programmer major.
this year I have exams from web development (10th Jan - theory, 16th Jan - practical exams) and next year I have exams from App development (both mobile and desktop).
I know C family languages, Java, Python and those ones I am currently using. I also know a bit of Kotlin and I think I will continue learning it.
For web dev I know HTML and CSS ofc but also PHP and JS.
Planning on learning more languages I can use for App and operating system development as well as just to know them cause I want to after this year's exams!
my learning list:
Lua (I heard it's easy but I can't really get myself to read anything about this atm idk why)
Ruby
Assembly
Rust
As for electrical engineering I don't know much tbh but I would like to learn! I just used CAD programs for technical drawings (dad taught me some basic things when I was still thinking about going his path) helped my dad fix things on his Solar farm, houses of our neighbors and I made a few very simple circuits for fun a few years ago. Now I'm mostly focused on programming but since I learned most of the things I need for exams I have more time to do whatever I want now!
I'd like to get to know more people so I can share and mostly learn new things since even though I'm coding for years I consider myself a beginner and I am a total beginner when it comes to electrical engineering.
I'm willing to be friends or at least mutuals with anyone who codes or makes websites or is in STEM! no matter what your specialty/interest is exactly and no matter if you are a total beginner or a professional ^__^
I'd also like to have some mutuals who are into old web development and retro computing!!!!!!!!
edit: I forgot but I'm also interested in physics and quantum physics

I know you're on paternity leave so feel free to ignore this if you don't want to think about it, but has there been any progress on open-sourcing Tumblr's front-end? Inquiring minds would like to know
i hadn’t seen any progress on it before i left. there’s a strong willingness to do it, it’s just a big task to get it open-source-able in a sustainable way. a lot of our CI/CD processes rely on stuff that would need to be rebuilt from scratch, i think. totally doable, just not a priority.
but maybe there’s been progress since i left, i dunno! 🤞

Thinking about the protective way Clara tells Fleet not to go into DeVries' dangerous-looking training set-up, and about how when Septimus mentions Fleet's friend Fleet's immediate assumption is that he must mean Clara, and about "This is Miss Clara Entwhistle, my partner - in business, my business partner." / "I'm also his friend, but he doesn't like to say it.", and about how Fleet rarely smiles but he smiles to himself at Clara having a good idea (and Clara notices the change in his expression), and about how Clara is trying to work out Fleet's birthday through a process of elimination, and about how Fleet tries twice to shut down the conversation with Frances Byrne that's making Clara uncomfortable, and about how panicked and angry he sounds after realising she's been poisoned...
#Victoriocity#Victoriocity spoilers#The nice thing about this season (and about the book) is that - although we don't know the exact time skip between seasons -#we're now getting to see their dynamic after they've known each other#(and worked together) for longer than a couple of weeks#I love how quickly they are ride or die in s1#but I love that there's more history there now. a more developed bond#You can hear it in little things#like how Fleet knows before she does it#that Clara is going to ask a person who is going to jail thanks to them#to recommend their PI business#the way he says 'Clara no...'#but then gets on board with it#Oh also I like to think that moment in S3E4 isn't the first time Fleet has smiled to himself at Clara doing something smart#but usually he does it while Clara isn't watching#This is all platonic to me btw#I'm open to being contradicted by the source material#but for now that's important to me#They are friends <3 even if he doesn't like to say it#Clara Entwhistle#Archibald Fleet#Inspector Fleet

have you watched hunter the parenting? if so what’s ur opinion on it?
naw i havn't! the art is fantastic, the crew is extremely skilled and quite funny, but i just can't get into it, not really that compelled by the world it takes place in. i'm frankly really happy to see the spirit of tts live on like a phoenix, it's really sweet.
#i'm very picky and selective on what i get into just because my mental ability to engage with any given thing is really limited#theres a lot of Really Good things that i know i'd like that i just cant really get into lest i get extremely overwhelmed#maybe one day something will click and i'll get into htp#tts effected me in a really big way. i developed an introject sourced on magnus and it honestly is what kindove#held the door open for me to slide into warhammer as a whole#which i think has been quite a good thing. sorry this is a side tangent to htp lol
