OPT4048 - a "tri-stimulus" light sensor 🔴🟢🔵
We were chatting in the forums with someone when the OPT4048 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/OPT4048DTSR/21298553) came up. It's an interesting light sensor that does color sensing but with diodes matched to the CIE XYZ color space. This would make them particularly good for color-light tuning. We made a cute breakout for this board. Fun fact: it's 3.3V power but 5V logic friendly.

Scientists develop high-impact materials for optoelectronic technologies
Every day, people are reaping the benefits of work by scientists and engineers to make more effective X-ray machines, computers, cell phones and televisions. Florida State University researchers are pushing the boundaries of those technologies and developing new more cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for these devices. FSU Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Biwu Ma and his lab have spent years pioneering the use of hybrid materials known as organic metal halide hybrids, or OMHHs. These materials combine organic molecules with metal halide units, resulting in structures with easily manipulated properties that are used in solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and more. This fall, their work related to various aspects of these materials was published in three different scientific journals.

Yet another stepper breakout - TMC2130 🚀⚙️
We're back with yet another stepper driver breakout; this time, the Trinamic TMC2130

Remember we started with the 'classic' A4988, then upgraded to the 'uart capable + diagnostic output' TMC2209, now we have the SPI-controllable TMC2130. You can use either stand-alone mode or SPI mode. For stand-alone, we break out the extra configuration and debug pins if you need them. In SPI controllable mode, the config pins are used instead to communicate with a microcontroller/microcomputer for precision configuration, so a library will be needed. We had to extend the board a tad for the extra pads but kept everything like the step/direction LEDs and the easy-to-use current set potentiometer.

New conductive-bridge interlayer contacts could boost performance of 2D optoelectronics
Photodiodes are widely used devices based on semiconducting materials that can convert light into electrical current. These devices are central components of various contemporary technologies, including photovoltaics (PVs) and some sensing, imaging, measurement and communication systems. In recent years, engineers have been trying to devise new design strategies that could further improve the performance of photodiodes and the efficiency with which they convert light into electricity. One proposed approach entails their fabrication using two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, which are only a few atomic layers thin and exhibit advantageous properties. Despite their potential, many 2D semiconductor-based photodiodes fabricated so far have not performed as well as expected. This is in great part due to a phenomenon known as Fermi level pinning, which entails a fixation of the energy level at the interface between a metal and semiconductor.
