FACEIT, TF2, and YOU: What it is, how to play, etc
Tumblr media
So you’ve heard of the hit new thing coming to TF2 but you don’t know what the heck its all about? Or maybe you’re trying to figure out how to use FACEIT to play Team Fortress 2? This is the guide for you.
For those of you interested in signing up, consider using this link. For those of you looking to learn more, please read under the cut. I’ll be giving a detailed explanation of what FACEIT is, what it means for TF2, and how to queue.
Ok, so first thing’s first: what is FACEIT?
FACEIT is an Esports company founded in 2012. It has been hosting leagues and community matchmaking for games like CS:GO and Dota 2 for a while. But this isn’t really too important in the grand scheme. What you need to know is that FACEIT has taken an interest in creating a skill-based, cheat free, matchmaking platform for casual Team Fortress 2.
What this means is that after the closed beta for TF2 ends later this month (March), you will be able to queue into community maps hosted by FACEIT. These servers are heavily monitored with anti cheats so that they will not be infiltrated by hackers and bots which have currently been the plague of Casual Team Fortress 2.
Currently, FACEIT boasts zero bots, zero hackers, skill-based matchmaking, free prizes (australium weapons and rare cosmetics), no autobalance, no random crits, no random bullet spread, and more.
You can learn more about these things in plenty of youtube videos like these:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvfEmlJ_N48
But what does FACEIT mean for TF2? FACEIT poses a chance for TF2 players to experience a more serious casual setting without the current issues plaguing the game. It also means that TF2′s community could grow. Potentially, if FACEIT goes well, Valve could be inclined to improve the future of the game.
FACEIT currently is one of the best options for people who like playing TF2 seriously. It’s not technically competitive, but it is a more competitive way to play. Consider it like playing something like Competitive Overwatch casually. You should take the game seriously, not play as a friendly, and not abandon the game.
If you’re someone who wants more from your TF2 experience and want a challenge, this could be for you! That being said, I caution that it isn’t for everyone. It’s a very different way to play TF2 than a standard causal game is. Maybe give it a try and see if you like it!
-o-
So how all does it work from the technical side of things? How do you play?
Well, I’ve got the guide for you! (This will get long, I’m sorry).
Currently (3/14) the client only offers a closed beta. To get access you will need to be invited by FACEIT to the closed beta. However, you may be able to get access to this by inviting a friend (I’m not 100% sure).
If you have full access, or this is written after the closed beta has ended and the client opens to the general public: start here.
First thing’s first. When you download the client, it may require you to verify your email and phone number before you can queue. This is a component of the anti-cheat. Additionally, it may require that you download the anti-cheat software (this will require a PC restart). I suggest downloading it regardless of it is required. This is merely to help prevent the infiltration of hackers and bots.
Tumblr media
The anti-cheat download can be found in the bottom left of your screen. Just download the software and make sure you log in afterwards via the same button once it has been successfully downloaded. NOTE: you cannot install the anti-cheat with TF2 or another game open.
Once this is setup, you should be able to queue with no issues.
Tumblr media
From the play menu, you can queue for Solo or Team games of matchmaking 12v12 TF2. It will let you know how many players are currently queuing for the game mode if you hover (hence 21 in this screenshot).
Tumblr media
There are currently 8 available maps. You can select your preferences here. However, much like in competitive game lobbies, you will have the option to vote for the map chosen for the match. I’ll come back to this in a moment. For now, you need to know how to make sure you make it into a match.
Tumblr media
When a match is ready, there is a VERY short period of time to accept the match. Less than 30 seconds to hit accept. If you miss this window, you will have to requeue. If someone else misses this window, you will automatically requeue. The client will automatically play a loud trumpet flourish and you just hit the button to check in. This is to ensure no inactive players and afks.
Tumblr media
This is what the window looks like when you’re accepted into a game and the maps are still being chosen. Team leaders (priority towards people with premium passes) will choose and select a map for the game to be played on. If you’re not a team leader, you can request that certain maps be played or not played.
Tumblr media
After the map has been chosen, you will be provided an IP address to paste into your developer console in TF2. If you don’t know how to enable your developer console, please follow this guide.
You have less than 3 minutes to connect into the match. If you make it in during this time, you will be partaking in a few moments of warmup. It’s just like pre-game in Casual TF2 servers. From here, the game functions similar to competitive. One team attacks and sets a standard. The other only has to beat that standard time or amount of points capped etc. (I believe that KOTH maps are best out of 5).
If at any point your team is really getting beaten and you feel the need to forfeit. You can type “!gg” in the chat and a vote to forfeit will start.
If you leave the match early, you will be penalized. So you should really only queue up if you have an interest in completing the game. Even if it goes poorly, you should stick it out or use !gg.
Once the match ends, it will automatically close. Similar to an MvM lobby!
As you play, you’ll be able to work towards points to win prizes (they’re expensive but still possible to get!) as you play the game. Here’s an example of some of the prizes.
Tumblr media
There are also missions to help you unlock points. Here are some examples of those:
Tumblr media
You will also be able to rank up and unlock points that way. Newer players will have to work up through the ranks. The XP to earn these rank ups comes from playing the game. You can earn your way to the Face Melting rank just by playing the game.
Tumblr media
An example of how the ranking system currently works is shown here from Big Joey’s youtube video.
Tumblr media
As you can see, the higher ranks will be based on your skill as a player. There are also other things in FACEIT such as ladders and tournaments. These are more complicated and explorable on the actual site or platform itself. So I’ll let you guys check that out on your own.
Overall, there are a lot of fun things about FACEIT! Hopefully this guide helped you understand what it is, how to play, and what there is about it. Please let me know if you have any targeted questions about it in my inbox and I’ll be sure to help provide any info I can.
Have fun y’all and give it a try! This is a cool alternative to casual play.

ANOTHER EDITION OF INCORRECT QUOTES
ft: @catchmewiddershins @paradise-creator @elektrosonix @lilikags @todd-the-phrog and my irl bestie
Lili: I think I'm falling for you.
Anna: Then get up.
Anna: I dare you to kiss the next person who walks into this room.
Pauline: Screw that, I’m not kissing any of you.
*Wid walks in*
Pauline: Fine, I’ll do it. Rules are rules you know.
Sara: Are you an F5 key? Because that ass is refreashing.
Wid: Are you a software update? because not right now.
Isamu: Is something burning?
Wid, leaning seductively on the counter: Just my desire for you.
Isamu: Wid, the toaster is literally on fire.
Isamu: *seductively takes off glasses*
Isamu: Wow...
Anna: *blushes* Haha... what?
Isamu: You're really fucking blurry.
Anna: Any questions?
Wid: Uh, yeah, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?
Anna: Uh, a plan, duh...
Shiyu: Wid, chill, I know it’s weird, but Anna has a point.
Wid:
Wid: THAT WAS LITERALLY A PONY DOODLE WITH A HAT!!
Wid: I know this isn’t going to end well and I don’t care. So don’t you try and stop me, Sara!
Sara: I wasn’t stopping you. I was asking if you had a spare camera so I can record this.
Lili: I'm not that stupid!
Shiyu: Lili, you literally ate the wax from a babybel.
Lili: ANNA TOLD ME IT WAS EDIBLE!
Isamu: *visiting the squad* Hello, I just came to-
Isamu: *sees Sara shoving Shiyu into the washing machine while Anna records and Wid watches*
Isamu: *retreating* Something suddenly came up.
Shiyu: I failed my safety training course today.
Lili: Why, what happened?
Shiyu: Well one of the questions was "In case of a fire, what steps would you take?"
Lili: And?
Shiyu: Well apparently "FUCKING LARGE ONES" isn't an acceptable answer.
Lili: How would you like your coffee?
Wid: As dark and as bitter as my soul.
Lili, shouting to someone behind the counter: I need one vanilla latte with extra cream and sugar!
Wid: It’s time to turn this into a real business.
Shiyu: What do you mean? Like, carry a briefcase, and wear a tie, and pay taxes?
Anna: Wait, have you not been paying your taxes?
Sara: I handle our accounting.
(no but this is actually me)
Sara: Honestly, I am so evil. So full of darkness. I feed of the souls of the living I strike fear into-
Anna: You sleep with a teddybear.
Sara: He’s my sECOND IN COMMAND IN MY ARMY OF DARKNESS!
Lili: You are an absolute fucking dork.
Anna, singing: Yeah, but I'm your dork!
Lili: *sighs* Yeah, you're my dork.
Lili: Guys, I didn’t memorize my lines!
Isamu: Just use your lack of common sense! Everyone knows the characters in plays are dumb as fuck!
*During the play*
Pauline: Hey! You finally made it! Did you get the donuts?
Lili: W-what’re donuts?
Pauline: I am darkness. I am an power. I am your worst nightmare. I could kill a man in more ways than you can imagine. I am the night. I am fury, I am a weapon, I am-
Anna: A doll.
Isamu: A cinnamon roll.
Lili: A sweetheart.
Pauline:
Pauline: ...stop it.
Pauline: I think I just figured something out. I got to go.
Wid: Aren't you forgetting something?
Pauline: Uuh...*hesitantly kisses Wid's forehead before running out.*
Wid: No, pay your bill! Damn, who raised you?
Pauline: Why should I make my bed, when I'm just gunna unmake it to sleep in it anyways?
Anna: Why should I feed you if your just gunna die anyways?
Pauline:
Pauline: I'll go make my bed-
Lili: Yo dumbass, get over here.
Shiyu: Okay-
Anna: *gleefully runs past* I’m coming!
Shiyu, sadly: I thought... I was dumbass...
Shiyu: That shirt looks great, Sara.
Sara: Thanks.
Shiyu: But I bet it would look even better on Lili's floor.
Lili: Are you hitting on Sara... for me?
Pauline: I dare you-
Lili: Isamu is not allowed to accept dares anymore.
Pauline: Why not?
Isamu: "I have no regard for my own or others personal safety", as some would say.
Pauline: Dearly Beloved, we are here today to remember Isamu, taken from us in the prime of life; when they were crushed by a runaway semi, driven by the Incredible Hulk.
Isamu: Aww, you knew my favorite cause of death.
Lili: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Wid, whispering: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Sara, whispering: Because I have little hands.
Wid: Because they have little hands.
Anna: I’ve made a spread sheet of all the crime in Brooklyn.
Anna: There’s so much crime in New York, no one should live here.
Lili: Pros and cons of dating me.
Lili: Pros. You'll be the cute one.
Lili: Cons. Holy shit, where do I begin-
Shiyu: Sometimes I drink milk straight from the container.
Pauline: The cow??
Shiyu: What?
Isamu: Pauline, W H Y?
Lili: We just ate. Why are you making pancakes?
Sara: For the dogs.
Wid: Why are your tongues purple?
Isamu, texting in the group chat: I wonder what Apple shots would look like?
Shiyu: That’s the longest worm I’ve ever seen.
Isamu: Is this your plan B?
Lili: What do you call quantums of electromagnetic radiation that don’t get along?
Sara: Hey, no, you stay out of this, this is between me and Isamu!
Anna: Truth or dare?
Isamu: How many children do you have?
Isamu, tearing up the room: Where are they?
Sara, very tired: Can I sleep in your bed?
Isamu: I failed my safety training course today.
Pauline, watching Isamu and Sara fight: Are you sure they should be fighting? What if they get hurt?
(ok but this is kinda accurate)
Isamu: Do you want some tea?
Pauline: I have an idea.
Wid: When I was a kid, Isamu told me that the paper strip that’s in the chocolate kisses were edible and I ate them with the chocolate for a year.
Pauline: What the fuck? People actually tell their crushes they like them??
Shiyu: What's wrong with you?
Wid: I intend to stay pissed at you forever.
Anna, hungover: Please tell me I'm imagining that I claimed I was king of the ducks.
Anna, holding a rock: Isamu just gave this to me and said "I feel like you deserve the moon but all I can give you is a rock".
Anna: What do you have?
Pauline: Well, well, well, if it isn’t the consequences of my actions.
Lili: Alright, listen up you little shits.
Anna: I wasn't hurt that badly. The doctor said all my bleeding was internal, that's where the blood's supposed to be!
Pauline: So are you gonna explain how the hell you crashed my car?
Sara: How stupid do you think I am?!
Pauline: Honestly, I am so evil. So full of darkness. I feed of the souls of the living I strike fear into-
Lili: I'm going the fight the next person who insults Pauline.
Lili: I currently have 7 empty notebooks and I have no idea what to put in them. Any suggestions?
Anna: I wanna die.
Shiyu: Are you sure this is safe?
Wid: My life is a little too much panic and not enough disco.
Isamu: The time to act is now.
Isamu: Shiyu won’t wake up, what do I do?
Isamu: Why doesn’t Pauline find me sexy when I bite my lip?
Wid: Anna's first detention, I'm so proud.
Pauline: She's the girl of my dreams!
(and now, an only ship edition)
Pauline: So, are you two dating now?
Anna: I didn't drink that much last night.
Anna: Did you know you remind me of all 26 letters of the alphabet?
Shiyu: Just a minute. I need to go take out the trash.
Isamu: *sees Anna and Pauline together*
Pauline: Two years ago, I married my best friend.
Anna: Well, remember when Lili made a romantic dinner for me?
Isamu: Sara, let’s go!
Anna: Let’s watch Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Wid: Is this your plan B?
Shiyu: I would never say that my partner is a bitch and I don’t don’t like them. That’s not true… My partner is a bitch and I like them so much!
Lili: I find it very unseemly of Shiyu to start dating again. Isn't the customary period of mourning 10 years?
Shiyu: Hey, Pauline? Can I get some dating advice?
Shiyu: I still have no idea how I’m attracted to you...
Isamu: Someone take me to art museums and make out with me.
Anna: Guys, my friend here is bilingual.
Sara: Valentine’s day is just a consumerist holiday that holds no real value other than drive people insane buying heart shaped chocolates for their significant others and pos-
Anna: So... who's the big spoon and who's the little spoon?
Shiyu: Isamu kissed me!
Sara: Ooh, somebody has a crush
Lili: *sees Anna and Shiyu together*
*playing twister*
Wid: So, what is Shiyu to you?
Shiyu: Why are your tongues purple?

Chapter 19
Draped over her knees with your arms bent under your head as a pillow, you genuinely wish the reason for that position would be another entirely.
Not that you’d thought you were the type of person to like impact play before meeting Miranda, but a lot changed since she decided to kidnap you and turn your life upside down: you didn’t think you had so much strength in you, you didn’t think you were too smart with electronics and computer softwares, you didn’t think you weren’t made to fight, you didn’t think you would fall in love with a psychotic killer who liked to push your limits, teach you things, even how to fight, who fucked you and let you fuck her… and there you were, enjoying all those things because Miranda was there.
You’re trying to imagine that this is one of her weird scenarios back in her bedroom, roleplaying god-knows-what, putting a little fun in the punishments she oughta give you for not doing something right. Yet, this is not a game. You won’t enjoy any of this and you know it already.
The pain is excruciating already as it is and it’s only about to get worse.
She tried to be incredibly gentle when she removed the tatters of the shirt you were wearing from your back, but that too sent your skin burning aflame, the welts screaming and making you tear up.
The cool air did little good on your bare skin, the gentle scrape at the base of your neck as Miranda helped you lay across her thighs, close to her lap only a sad consolation. She praised you, but you just hiccupped through a sob and stood silent.
You wish you could reassure her, tell her to not feel guilty because what else could she do there, if not obeying? It was that or bullets in your brains.
At least wounds could heal, and you’re not new to wounds either. You can do it. You can bear anything, she’s made you strong, but you can’t bring yourself to speak to her: there are too many thoughts in your mind.
Victor’s words, for instance.
You know it’s only a bunch of lies, but there’s something telling you that it’s not just a bunch of lies.
Victor is an asshole and he likes to tease and to provoke and you bet he’s only said those things to get a rise from Miranda and awaken something within you that could possibly turn you against her, in the end.
Improbable, but not impossible. There’s still too much to uncover.
You swallow down, fidgeting as you try to find the most comfortable position, but already aware that nothing will lessen your discomfort.
Hidden from your eyes, Miranda unfolds the foil that she’s stuck in the wall a few days ago. She opens up a new bottle and drinks from it - you can hear her swallow in long, rhythmical gulps - the foil rustles in her hand for a moment, then she caps the bottle again and shakes it vigorously.
Your first reaction is to grow tense, you can’t even help it.
“It’s going to sting.” Miranda warns with a low, apologetic voice.
You’d tell her that it’s not her fault, except that it is, in a certain sense. Besides, you can’t bring yourself to actually talk, already so invested with bracing yourself for pain.
Water and salt: she’s going to clean the welts on your back to the best of her possibilities. It won’t be pleasant at all. “Try not to fight it, it’ll only be worse.” She suggests. You don’t really know if you’ll be able to do it.
When she starts to pour, it hurts like hell. She tuts at you, shushes you when the clatter of your teeth becomes louder, but it doesn’t help the searing pain that radiates in your body.
“I’ll kill him,” Miranda mumbles behind clenched teeth, “I’ll fucking run him over with a car and kill him.” She says.
It’s nice to know that she’s unhinged toward Victor because of you, that she would kill him for you, but somehow, it’s not enough to distract you from the pain. It’s the only disinfectant you have access to, it’s supposed to burn, but there’s something terribly wrong in the way it steals your breath away.
You feel like dying, and, at some point, you know you’re unconsciously wiggling, thrashing your limbs in the grasp of a maddening pain, caused by something that it’s supposed to help but that seems only to make things worse. You feel your skin tearing, the salty water seeping inside, overwhelming your body - it’s too much.
You’ve been through a lot in the past few months, and yet, somehow, nothing was as bad as this. Maybe it’s the situation, maybe it’s the fear, maybe it’s the realization that something terrible has happened that involves the person you’ve grown to love, but you can’t bear it.
You let go. You allow yourself to cry. For the pain, and also for something else.
Maybe you’ve passed out. You clearly don’t remember falling asleep, honestly, how could you have fallen asleep?
You’re still draped over her legs, you feel one of her hands carding mindlessly through your hair and on the nape of your hair.
Miranda seems to notice the change in your breathing, or maybe you’ve just moved unconsciously, but your body falls limp over hers, every muscle turned to liquid under her hand and soothing murmurs.
To her eyes, you even might look relaxed. In reality, you don’t have enough strength to push yourself up and put some distance between the two of you.
“It’s done.” She says, pressing her fingertips between your shoulder blades, the other on your tailbone as if to keep you still. “Don’t move yet, the rash is fading, but the welts look rather sore.”
You’re barely listening to her.
You don’t feel exactly fine, but better, besides, it’s not your back that hurts most, but your head. The thoughts swirling in there are screaming louder than anything else.
You don’t care about the welts, you don’t care about the rash nor the soreness. You don’t even care about Victor for putting you in this situation. You don’t care about Victor for putting Miranda in that situation. You care about him because he put those thoughts in your head and now you don’t care about anything else: what is it that you don’t know? What important secret has Miranda kept from you?
“I wasn’t the only one?” You ask without small talks, eager to get it out of you and sorted out before it drives you insane.
Her breath falters. She doesn’t move, but you feel something shifting in the air, in the way she rests her fingertips across your skin.
There’s silence for a long time.
You don’t know if she’s finally given up, or maybe it’s because she feels trapped, with nowhere to go, yet she heaves a sigh, hopefully readying herself to face you, your questions, and possibly the future that lies ahead.
“Nobody ever made it that far.” She says in the smallest voice you’ve ever heard coming from her.
There were others. There have been others before you. The information doesn’t shock you, what does it’s the complete lack of emotion on her part.
“You killed them?” You inquire. The words haven’t even left your mouth yet and you already fear the answer. She doesn’t speak, which already is enough, or very close to the reply you were anticipating and, still, you need to hear it; you need to hear it from her. “You killed other girls? Miranda!”
She flinches at the way you shout her name: demanding, enraged, not allowing room for lies or more silence. It’s new, it would’ve earned you a punishment. Now, it doesn’t.
You feel her muscles tense under you, above, all over.
“It’s my job.” She says, again, emotionless. “You don’t have to be shocked. You know how it started, you listened to my tales, you’ve seen this place and known Victor.” She swallows. “It was my job.” She corrects.
“So, you would’ve killed me.”
“No-”
“Yes. You would.”
Miranda doesn’t reply to that. She can’t reply to that with anything that could make you feel slightly better. You both know that, and you’re grateful she’s not telling lies, nor shying away with some witty comment, or distracting you with anything else.
“I didn’t.” She says at one point. “The point is that I didn’t.”
“Yes.” You agree, slightly confused.
You know there have been others in the same cell, maybe others had managed to get out and endure some of her training, but nobody has made it, in the end.
What makes you different? You’d want to know the answer so badly, but it’s probably too cheesy and close to the nonsense that it’s impossible. It had to do something with a peculiar feature in you, or how fast you learn, or something that you can’t think of right now. But what? “Why? Why didn’t you?”
“Listen,” She lets out a frustrated sigh. You know what she’s about to do: you’ve reached the breaking point, she has no escape and now she’s shying away, “this is not the place, nor the time to-”
“We could die.” You cut her off, virtually grabbing her before she can go and hide somewhere you can’t reach. “Am I right? We could die.”
“Aye.”
“Then talk to me!” Your breath hitches. “Please.”
Hidden from your inquiring glare, Miranda heaves a long sigh. One of her hand hovers on the small of your back, the other trails through the fine hair on your nape, but it’s hardly for your pleasure: she’s using you as a sort of stress relief and you’d gladly let her without complaints. You’d do that in normal circumstances, now you’re more than happy to indulge her to know the truth, finally.
“You know why I chose you.” Miranda says. You nod: she’s told the story already: no bonds, no real purpose in your life; simply the preferable candidate to kidnap and train. “But I never told you why I needed someone like you.” She pauses, clears her throat, her voice is getting hoarse. “You’ve seen this place, you must’ve realized, by now, that I work for Victor. Worked that is. We- we are criminals. Ruthless, cold-hearted, murderous criminals who obey orders for money, no matter what.”
“I know.” You croak out, even just to give her courage. Of course you know she’s not a saint, you’ve known it since the beginning. You have to admit that hearing it from her, the plain truth, is strange and upsetting, but you’ve been preparing for the revelation for weeks.
“I was supposed to collect some information about a very important family. Drug dealers, weapon treaders- the worst kind. I was supposed to get close to them and inside their corporation and get out when the work was done, but to do that, I needed bait. I needed somebody to blame so I could get out clean and alive.” She says in a thin voice. Her fingers get caught in your hair, she doesn’t pull. “I was supposed to train someone and feed them to the lions, but- I couldn’t do it. In the end, I couldn’t do it.”
“Because of me?” You ask hesitantly, fearing that your voice might break the spell. Luckily, it doesn’t. If anything, it seems to comfort her, in some way.
“Because it was you.” She corrects with a small huff. You can feel all the frustration trapped in her words. “I thought I was simply having fun while doing my job, I thought there was nothing wrong with taking the best out of the situation... but things got out of hand. I- I didn’t know what I was doing, at some point, I knew you were getting attached, but I tried to ignore the signals, I tried to dismiss the issue until it was too late. Until there was no space left to back up, and the only way was going forward.” She inhales deeply, resumes the slow caress on the small of your back. Inadvertently, she catches a welt and you do your best not to flinch away at the pain. “I convinced myself it was just fun, just sex, just casual cohabitation with benefits, and then you talked about love... and the bubble burst.”
“I’m sorry-” You murmur, she doesn’t hear you.
“I got- I got scared and I fucked it all up.”
She moves up your back without warning, and your abused skin sets on fire. Your mind was racing already, now, spurred by the blazing pain, is in literal delirium. You push yourself up, ignoring the tightness in your muscles, the ache of your welts, and sit back on your haunches, wincing at the position that has you dizzy, eyes boring into her.
Miranda stares, her gaze a mixture of concern and shyness, and guilt that flashes oh-so-clear in the blue of her eyes, like nothing ever before. Miranda has always been tough to read, but right now, she’s so vulnerable, so exposed that your heart almost aches.
“So?” You blurt out. “I’m scared all the time! I fuck things up all the time, what’s the big deal?”
Miranda chuffs out a chuckle. Her smile is bittersweet when she shakes her head.
“You don’t understand.” She whispers. “There’s no room for being scared in this world, nor to fuck things up. You do that, you’re dead!” She growls, jaw clenched and voice vibrating with the effort. “I can only be cold-hearted and confident and ruthless and strong-”
“No, you don’t understand!” You cut her off, heart in your throat. “You can be all of that at the same time and also allow yourself to be scared. Being scared it’s what makes you different from them, can’t you see it?” You lean forward, panting hard through the soreness in your back, and rest a palm on the floor.
“It’s what got us caught.” She insists. Miranda tries to reach for you, but you flinch back.
“You’re more than just black and white.” You whisper softly, voice so low you even wonder if she can actually hear you. Eyes fixed on the sticky linoleum, you don’t feel brave enough to bear her gaze. You’ve been willing to tell her something similar for ages, and now that it’s time, now that you’ve finally decided to seize the opportunity - because, frankly, there might not be a lot of chances in the future - you feel extremely agitated. It’s now or never. Literally. Besides, what is she going to do about it? Run off? Choke you to death? You’ll be dead anyway. “You’re more than that, Miranda, in fact...  you have a whole spectrum of colors within you and you don’t even know it because you’ve been too busy suffocating it for years.”
You find the courage to lift your head, and look at her. She looks beautiful as always, her puzzled face all angles and sharp edges, blue eyes boring into your very soul. You feel exposed, and yet, for some reason, you’ve never felt braver.
“I can see through you.” You sigh, your hands shake. “You let me in, Miranda. It’s too late to push me out.”
There’s a long pause. Or is it a quick one, you don’t really know. The whole room is spinning, your tired brain struggling between processing the pain and the situation at the same time.
“I did, didn’t I?” Miranda snorts, chuffing out a disbelieving giggle as she probably laughs at herself. She breathes hard behind her palms, covering her face, and when she peels her hands away, she cocks her head to the side, her face a mixture of concern and condescending curiosity as she studies you. “I got your point, no lay back down. I don’t have salts if you faint on me.”
You gape at her, but you’re too tired to protest further, so you simply give in and settle on your stomach by her side.
“Do you really think this is the best time to pull out a joke about salt?”
“Why not?” She shrugs.
She’s right. Neither of you knows how much it’s left, and the timing, you have to admit it, was quite perfect.
“I think it’s the first time I’ve heard you joking.” You confess. Surprisingly, even and especially to yourself, you’ve managed to keep your voice even and emotionless. You were simply stating the fact, but you’ve managed to conceal everything that was behind it: even in those horrible times and even more disgusting place, Miranda is still uncovering new little bits of her.
“I’m sorry.” She mumbles, out of the blue. “You didn’t deserve this.”
“Nobody does.” You reply, a little shrug of your shoulders.
Even if you might have a distorted vision of reality, you know she doesn’t deserve it. Despite what Miranda thinks of herself, no matter how guilty she feels, she does not deserve this.
The woman scoffs, you see her carding her hand through her hair angrily with the corner of your eyes.
“You shouldn’t be here in the first place.” She growls. “You shouldn’t love-”
“Miranda, stop it.” You exhale sharply and her precarious rambling stops immediately. “It’s not like I can help it.”
“Pity.” She mutters, almost automatically.
You can’t pretend it doesn’t hurt, but you manage to mask the rejection quite well. You turn your head to the other side, so you’re now facing the wall.
You know you’ve been a fool, you know you’ve just self-deceived for months about the nature of your relationship, you know you’ve hoped and waited for something to finally shift, and it did, but only on your side. Hope… was just a weapon as dangerous as a gun, maybe even worse.
It’s so perfectly clear, right now, so close to actually dying, that things will not change. Miranda will never love you when she barely cares.
After all, why would she? Why would somebody like her love a dull girl kidnapped in a dark alley, drunk, that was supposed to serve as bait?
Of course, it changed a bit. Maybe she’s taking a liking of you, but that’s it. That’s as far as it’ll ever go.
You stiffen when you feel her fingertips crawling up your back, dragging her pads along your spine, minding not to touch any welt or sore point.
You don’t know if she knows what you’re thinking, yet you’re sure she’s sensed your melancholy. She always does.
“It’ll take a while, but it’ll heal eventually.” She whispers soothingly.
“Those are not the scars I’m worried about.” You murmur back.
You’d wear those scars proudly just as you wear hers, if only to remind yourself of those times, of those things you’ve endured and survived together. You know those will heal, one day, leaving simple marks behind, but you’re not sure the hidden ones will too. Anyway, what’s the point, now? Everything seems so meaningless so close to possibly dying while being stuck: impossible to go back to feel nothing, impossible to claim more.
“Everything heals, eventually.” Miranda says, she seems lost in her thoughts and you don’t even know if she’s talking to you or to herself. You’re in no mood to mind looking, right now. “With time.”
“We might not have that, though.” You exhale, let your eyes close. “We might die before anything can actually heal, right?”
Miranda pauses for a moment. She stops her movements, settles her hand on your bruised hip, making you shiver under that hesitant touch. She sighs.
“Right.”

Subnautica Week day 6: Crossover (with Magic Kaito)
Welcome to my (sliiiiightly revised ;) ) retelling of the events of Subnautica, featuring Kuroba Kaito as Ryley Robinson and Hakuba Saguru as Al-An. No, Subnautica people, that isn't a typo.
Sadly I don't have the full fic to share today (or any time soon), so here's about 1000 words of preview/teaser! We open on the enforcement platform, where Kaito has just figured out exactly how much trouble he's in. But what’s in this room branching off from the control room?
The room was smaller than the others, but the scant space was filled with machinery centered around a glowing structure in the middle. It was a blocky oblong covered in green circuitry lines, another of the artifacts left behind by whatever aliens had built this building. Like the others he’d seen in the main room, it hovered suspended within a green forcefield. Kaito ran his scanner over it.
“Alien data storage unit: This unit is capable of holding several exabytes of information and is powered by the same source that powers this facility. It is equipped for short-range scanning and broadcast but does not appear to be connected to any network. The stability of the data storage structure suggests that it is designed for minimal data loss or corruption over extended periods of time.”
“A simple but accurate analysis,” the data unit replied, sending Kaito scrambling backwards with a startled yelp. “However, even our technology was not intended to maintain data integrity for one-one-one-one-one thousand years. I am afraid I have suffered some degradation of my mental faculties.”
“What the hell,” Kaito gasped, leaning back against the entryway and staring at the pulsing green glow warily. “You can, uh, talk?”
“I would hope that was apparent,” and okay, Kaito didn’t need to take sass from a glowing alien sphere after the day he’d had. “Your translating software is quite advanced. I am impressed.”
“Thanks? Uh, who are you, exactly?”
“You may call me Saguru. I am one of the Architects stationed on this planet to research a cure for the Kharaa bacterium.” Weirdly enough, the universal translator gave Saguru’s voice a slight British accent.
Wait, bacterium? Cure? Kaito took a few careful steps forward. “Did you find one?”
“No. My body was infected with the bacterium before we found a cure, and my data was uploaded to this storage unit. My colleagues were supposed to transport me back to our home planet after completing the research, but I can only assume they were not-not-not-not successful.”
That was twice that Saguru had stuttered, like a computer glitched in a loop. “Are you...okay?”
“As I said, this unit was not designed for such long-term storage. I have lost some data integrity. Have you found any signs of my colleagues?”
“Some logs in the lower levels of this building, but otherwise no.”
“My race is both organic and cybernetic. I should be able to feel my colleagues in the Network, but I am unable to access it from this unit. I wish to search for any others that may still survive and complete our research to obtain a cure, but I cannot do either from here. My scans show that you have a compatible storage system that would be able to house my data. Would you be willing to permit me to transfer myself?”
Kaito raised his eyebrows. A lifetime of watching horror vids with Aoko was enough for him to see the red flags in giving a talking computer access to his PDA. “After your technology shot down my ship and killed the crew?” And maybe his father, ten years earlier?
There was a pause. “The quarantine protocol is intended to prevent potential spread of the bacterium from this planet. It has proven to be very contagious and very fatal. It is...regrettable that your ship was destroyed. However, if you had made contact with the bacterium and carried it off of the planet with you, the consequences would have been even more dire. Please, I need-need-need-need-need-need you to help me. We were getting close in our research. If the others are incapacitated, then I am the only one who can fix this. And I need your help.”
The problem was, Kaito did need it fixed. He equally needed a functional survival PDA to construct resources. Promises of a cure would do him no good if the alien destroyed his tech and he couldn't filter water. "What happens if I say yes? Will downloading you mess up any of my data?"
"No, my scans show more than sufficient available space, and I can compress some parts of myself as needed. I also will not interfere with your systems. I will be, in essence, a passenger."
"And what happens if I say no?"
"The bacterium will likely kill you, and I will continue to be trapped here with only the slightest chance of another opportunity to find a cure. In the thousand years that I have been in this storage unit, you are the first sapient being to find me. I do not know if I can afford-ford to wait another thousand years for someone else."
Kaito ran a hand through his hair and paced as he thought it over. He didn't trust Saguru—the whole thing screamed evil aliens and/or robots—but if his own scan data was to be believed, he didn't have much choice either. The bacterium was going to kill him, and even if it didn't the damn quarantine gun would never let him escape the planet.
"Can't you just disable the quarantine protocol?" he tried.
"I am unable to interface with it from this unit," Saguru replied. "And, as only uninfected individuals can disable it, there is no possibility of you disabling it without a cure. Besides, the results of breaking quarantine while infected would be disast-ast-astrous. I would not disable it for you to carry the bacteria off-planet even if I could."
Kaito blew out a tense breath. Everything was happening too fast; he wanted a week just to process all of this. There was no time for that, though, not if his life was on a time limit. "Okay. Yeah, I'll do it."
"Thank you." The relief in Saguru's voice was the most emotion Kaito had heard out of him yet. "You can activate the data transfer by pressing the green-green-green-green button to the right."
When he looked closer, there was indeed a control panel on the structure. "Well, here goes nothing," Kaito muttered, and clapped his hand down against it.
The pulsing green glow of the structure abruptly turned much brighter, and the oblong shape shifted into blocky segments. In Kaito’s hand, the PDA beeped helpfully. “Translated broadcast: Brace for transfer.”
Kaito blinked and looked down at it. “Wait—brace?”
The lights flashed blindingly bright.

One Month
Pairing: (F)Reader x Youngjae
Word count: 4.3k
Genre: Fluff | Romance | Non-Idol!AU | Soulmate AU
Summary: While you’ve completely given up the idea of soulmates and love completely, Youngjae’s convinced that he can change your mind. Although the only thing he has is your long friendship, he’s willing to spend a whole month trying to win your heart...
Warnings: -
Tumblr media
It’s ridiculous. That’s what you thought. There was no such thing as ‘strings’ or ‘akaito’. You had been through way too much pain to even think about the possibility of a soulmate. The dream of finding your soulmate had been crushed one too many times, and you had concluded that they just simply didn’t exist.
That thought also made you feel bitter whenever you saw couples in the streets. You wondered how they were so lucky to actually be compatible when all of your previous lovers had failed to be compatible with you. You were convinced that no one could change your mind.
Youngjae thought otherwise.
“She just doesn’t believe in soulmates,” he sighs just as Coco jumps onto his lap.
“Does she not believe in soulmates or does she just not want a relationship?” Mark asks as he hands Youngjae a mug of tea.
“Could be both.” Another sigh leaves his lips as he looks down at the steaming beverage.
Mark sits himself next to him, “How are you so sure about this anyway? Have you ever asked her directly?” He sips his own drink as he watches Youngjae.
“I’ve known (Y/n) since we were in college. I’m always the person she comes to when her boyfriends break up with her.” Youngjae pauses to run his hand through Coco’s coily fur. “She hasn’t dated anyone since her last ex. Apparently, she’s completely given up the idea of love and soulmates completely.”
“But you’re sure that she’s your soulmate,” Mark adds. He nods.
“Hyung, every time I see her I get this feeling - it’s like my heart could probably pop out of my chest and fly towards her!” He almost spills his tea when he throws his arms up into the air; his hands scrambling to steady the cup.
“If you spill that; you’re cleaning my couch,” the older man jokes. “Talk to her.” His statement makes Youngjae turn to him. “If you want her so badly, make a deal with her or something. Ask her to give you…” Mark trails off as he tries to plan it in his mind. His face lights up, “Ask her to give you time. See if you can convince her to believe in love again.”
“Doesn’t that make me sound like a dick?” Youngjae questions.
Mark hums for a moment before shaking his head, “You’re giving her a challenge. She’s gonna challenge herself to not fall in love with you, but when she does, she’ll fall harder than she realised.” It seems like a foolproof plan. Youngjae’s known you for six years. He knows you better than anyone else and he’d bet that he knows you better than you know yourself.
He stays at Mark’s apartment for a bit longer, planning what Youngjae should do in order to win your heart. They’ve concluded that showing up at your apartment in the middle of the night would not only be irrational but it would also annoy the hell out of you.
“Find some time to talk to her,” Mark says. “You guys have those monthly movie nights, right? Bring it up to her then.” His suggestion implants itself into Youngjae’s mind. The man carries the thought with him as he heads home, leash in hand and Coco running by his side.
“Doesn’t seem like a bad idea, right, Coco?” Youngjae looks down to face his tiny dog. The maltese only turns her head to look up at him, tongue hanging out of her mouth as she pants. “Yeah, you don’t think it’s a bad idea,” he concludes as they continue with their walk home.
As he walks, Youngjae wonders why you’ve never felt what he’s felt. He’s so certain that you’re his soulmate, but it always felt like something was missing. Every time he sees you, it’s like a glass of ice water on a hot day. Whenever he touches you, his entire body buzzes with joy. It just makes him wonder why can’t you feel it, too? Or if you do, why don’t you say anything?
He honestly thought he was crazy when he first met you. Youngjae just saw you as radiant and beautiful, but you always seemed to see him as a friend. So, that’s what he was to you; your best friend. He considered telling you what he felt on the inside when you were graduating, but Youngjae was discouraged whenever he saw you with one of the engineering students.
“Do you even think she would agree to it?” He questions Coco as he walks into the lift of his apartment. Coco sits patiently and looks up at him, tilting her head. “She would...right?”

“Pizza?” You suggest as you lean over your counter, phone in hand and eyes watching Youngjae.
“I’m fine with anything,” he shrugs as he pulls a bottle of soju out from your fridge. “Wine, soju or no alcohol?” You click your tongue as you think about it. You could skip the alcohol and avoid the possibility of a hangover in the morning - which could save you stress from work - or you could just have wine and drink the night away with Youngjae by your side.
“Fuck it; wine. My boss is driving me nuts.” Youngjae says no more as he puts the soju back in to grab the large bottle of red wine and places it on the counter.
He rummages through your cabinets to pull our two wine glasses, “What did he do this time?”
“He promoted that asshole in my office who’s only been working there for a year! I worked my ass off for four years, flew to Shanghai on my own last year because Kayla was sick, I got the company three different projects in the past two years, and Jason gets promoted because his daddy’s the CEO! Youngjae, he doesn’t even know how to use the editing software. He’s part of the editing team and he doesn’t know how to edit jack shit.” When you’re finished with your rant, Youngjae chuckles as he slides a glass of wine towards you.
“Why don’t you make friends with him and convince him to promote you?” he suggests nonchalantly.
“He’s an arrogant asshole who pushed my coffee out of my hands the other day in front of the office,” you deadpan. Youngjae’s face contorts into a grimace.
“He’s lucky none of us work with you or he’d get some sense beaten into him,” he chuckles.
“Can’t you just bring Jackson to the office one day? He doesn’t even need to do anything, he just needs to stand there and flex. Jason would piss himself the moment he sees Jackson’s big ass muscles,” you jokingly say.
“I’m not going to send my friends to your office just to scare them,” Youngjae snorts.
You let out a whine and pout, “I was just joking. But all jokes aside, I really wanna-” You imitate the action of strangling someone, aggressively shaking your hands back and forth while he laughs at you.
“Violence is never the answer, (Y/n).”
“Wouldn’t you know.” You turn to him and raise an eyebrow, silently reminding him of that fight he got into when you were still in college.
“Wh- We were twenty-two!” He scoffs, “That guy was drunk and he probably would’ve hurt Yugyeom!” You cross your arms over your chest and raise an eyebrow at him. Youngjae’s nose scrunches up in annoyance as he grumbles, “Okay, fine - I was jealous! Was that what you wanted to hear?”
You roll your eyes, “Why would you be jealous? We were just dancing.” You pick up the wine bottle and your glass, turning around to make your way to the living room.
“Because I was in love with you.” You freeze in your tracks. You slowly turn around, seeing Youngjae’s eyes trailed to the ground.
“W-What?” You watch in shock as he takes a deep breath, running a hand through his dark brown hair.
“I’ve been in love with you since we first met,” he confesses. “A-And I don’t know how you haven’t noticed at all in the past six years.” Youngjae’s looking at you now; soft brown eyes holding so much desperation that you can’t help but feel guilty.
“Y-Youngjae,” you place the glass onto the counter and rest the palm of your hands onto the smooth marble surface, “You know I don’t date anymore. I’m…” you turn away from him, not liking how vulnerable you suddenly felt. Usually, it wouldn’t mind that Youngjae would see this side to you, but now, it felt different. “I don’t believe in love anymore. It scares me.”
He rounds the counter and stands in front of you, “I promise I would never hurt you. Please, if you just give me a chance, I’ll prove to you that maybe love does exist.” You eye him skeptically. How could he change your mind? But more importantly: how have you been so unaware of his feelings towards you? “I bet I could make you fall in love with me in one month.” His voice pulls you out of your thoughts. You maintain your skeptical gaze, your arms crossed over your chest. It would be an interesting bet to see if Youngjae could play his cards right to make you change your mind. He also knows that you’re not the type of person to turn down bets.
“What would be in it for me?” Your question makes him smirk.
“If you don’t fall in love, I’ll make you dinner every night for a whole month.” You cock an eyebrow at the tempting offer.
“But, what if I do?” you tilt your head curiously.
“If you fall in love, then we get together,” Youngjae tells you. You think over the bet as you stare at him. “It would benefit both of us if you do end up falling in love, and I’ll prove to you that love isn’t all that bad.”
You purse your lips into a straight line. You’re sure that you could win the deal. After all, you’ve managed to go through a friendship with Youngjae without falling in love with him. “Deal.”
“The month begins tomorrow,” he smiles.

Date One
Youngjae: Are you busy tonight?
(Y/n): Nope
Youngjae: Let’s go out. Wear something casual. I’ll be there by eight.
You stare at his message. You were preparing yourself in being adamant on not falling in love with him - actually, you were just convinced that he would be unable to change your mind. After the years of heartbreak and betrayal by your past lovers, you just couldn’t believe in the idea of true love. Dating was scratched out of your life by the time you were twenty-two and the idea of marriage was tossed out the window on your twenty-third birthday.
Though, you were curious on just how far Youngjae would go in order to win your heart. So, by seven you were already getting ready. You look through your close, opting for just a crop top and a pair of denim shorts. The summer was starting to make the temperature rise day-by-day and you were certain that even at night, it was still going to be quite warm.
You hear the doorbell to your apartment ringing right as you’re grabbing your bag from your bed. You head out of your bedroom and open the door to see Youngjae nervously standing outside of your apartment. He quickly changes his stance when he realises the door is open and smiles,
“Shall we?” You step out of your apartment and follow by his side.
“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?” You question, glancing over at him.
“It’s a surprise, but you’ll love it.” Youngjae turns to you with a smile. You raise an eyebrow as he leads you out of your apartment. “It’s walking distance, but that’s all I’ll tell you,” he says when he sees the questioning look on your face. Your mind wanders to the possibilities of where he’s taking you while you both walk. It’s only when you see it that it hits you.
“The Summer Funfair!” You gasp loudly and turn to him. Youngjae has his usual bright smile on his face as he nods. He pulls out a tiny pouch filled with tokens that he had bought a week prior for the fair. When you saw that there was going to be a funfair nearby your house, you failed to leave Youngjae in the dark about it. You had bugged him about accompanying you halfway through spring when it was announced.
“You kept saying you wanted to check it out, so I thought that I could bring you here for our first date.” There’s a pink tint to his cheeks as he speaks. For the first time, you realise how cute he looks when he blushes. Youngjae pulls you through the large floral decorated gates, the two of you immediately being enveloped by a sense of joy and excitement. Children run past you, couples hold hands as they wander through the fair and Youngjae hopes he can hold yours.
You turn to Youngjae, “Can we ride the pirate ship?” Your finger points to the large ship that swings through the air in the distance and your best friend swears he feels his entire soul leaving his body as he watches it.
“(Y/n), y-you know I don’t handle heights well,” he gulps.
“Youngjae, please,” you pout. “You can’t tell me that you bring me here but we can’t ride the pirate ship.” You cross your arms over your chest as Youngjae stares at you with a gaping mouth and wide eyes. He lets out a deep sigh before nodding. You let out an excited squeal and grab his hand, dragging him straight to the ride.
All he can think of, though, is the feeling of your hand in his. Youngjae feels that familiar buzzing sensation that he gets every time your skin touches his as he looks at the way you’re completely oblivious to how he’s watching you.
When you reach the line to the fair, it seems that lady luck is by your side since there’s barely a line. Youngjae feels his stomach sink when he realises that means, “We can sit at the very back!” You turn to him with sparkling eyes. Your excitement is the only thing that keeps him from backing out and he chuckles before nodding awkwardly.
Youngjae watches the ship swing all the way to the top, stopping as it hangs upside down and he can’t help but know he might throw up. He’s lucky he skipped dinner since he knew you’d want to buy food at the fair instead. He watches as you bounce on your feet, waiting for your turn as more people line up behind you.
“(Y/n), I’m not so sure about this…” he trails off when the line starts moving forward.
“Youngjae, you’ll be fine,” you reassure him as you hold onto his wrist once again. “I’ll hold your hand through the whole thing, okay?” He stares at you before realising there’s seriously no way out of this and allows you to pull him towards the ship.
»»————- ————-««
“(Y/n), I really don’t think I can go on another ride,” Youngjae whines as you continue to pull him through the fair.
“Let’s take a break from the rides, okay?” You turn to him. You bite the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from laughing at the relieved look on his face. The grumble of his stomach is audible to you and his face immediately flushes red. “Let’s get something to eat before your stomach hurts,” you take his hand and drag him through the crowd once again.
You stop at one of the stalls selling corn dogs and see Youngjae’s face light up. He steps forward to look at the menu, turning around to notice that you’ve disappeared. He stands a bit taller to look for you in the crowd, seeing you standing in front of a game stall with wide eyes. Youngjae lets out a chuckle - how could he have forgotten just how quick you are when you see something that catches your eye.
He buys two corn dogs before walking towards where you are, “What are you looking at?” Youngjae asks when he’s standing beside you while holding one of his hands out.
“That,” you point towards the large panda plushie.
“You were staring at that for five whole minutes?” He questions as he takes a bite out of his corn dog. You nod silently as you by your own. “I’ll win it for you.” Youngjae holds the corn dog in between his teeth as he goes up.
“Shoot all the cans down and you get to choose your prize,” the venodor tells him. He gestures to the sign sitting on the wooden counter reading “four tokens”. Youngjae digs into his pocket to pull out his tokens - all the while with the corn dog still in his mouth - before handing it to the man who hands him the toy gun.
You stand by his side, munching away at the snack in your hands as you watch him shoot the cans. You glance over at Youngjae, your mind filling with amusement at the sight of him with a toy rifle and a corn dog hanging from his mouth. You pull your phone out of your pocket and quickly snap a photo of him.
“You better win me that panda or I’ll send this to your friends,” you threaten playfully as you wave the phone in front of him. Youngjae gives you a warning glare before successfully shooting down the last can. A surge of joy washes over you and you start bouncing on your feet as you watch him hand the gun back to the man.
“The panda plushie, please,” he says as he finally pulls the corn dog out of his mouth. The vendor turns around and you can feel yourself filling with more excitement as you watch him pull the massive panda plushie off of the shelf. You start bouncing on your feet as the panda comes closer to Youngjae who takes it from the man, thanking him with a smile before he turns to you, “Ta da!”
You take the large plushie from him, your bottom lip caught between your teeth to stop yourself from smiling too wide - you’re still smiling anyway. “Thank you, Youngjae!” You hug the panda to yourself with one arm while you open your other arm at him. He can’t stop his own smile as he hugs you, his right hand held out behind you to keep the mustard on the corn dog from accidentally touching you.
When he pulls away, he’s still smiling, “Do you like it?” You nod ecstatically. Youngjae’s smile grows, his arm stays wrapped around your shoulder as you start to walk once again.
“What ride should we go on next?” You wonder out loud, causing him to pull his arm away from you.
“Please not the roller coaster,” he groans. You look between him and the loop-the-loop in the distance before grabbing his hand and dragging him straight there.
»»————- ————-««
Date Two
“Movie night?” you question when you see Youngjae standing outside with a duffle bag slung over his shoulder and a plastic bag held in the other. He nods, a small smile pulling on his lips. You let him into your apartment and take the bag from his hands.
“There’s a whole bag of popcorn in there and two cans of sprite.”
“I’ll put the popcorn in the bowl,” you tell him, “go ahead and choose a movie.” Youngjae obliges and heads towards your living room. When you enter the living room with a bowl of popcorn, he’s already chosen a movie. “Zootopia?” He nods as he presses play just as you plop yourself on the spot beside him.
“You haven’t seen it, but you promised me a few years ago that you would. So, now I’m gonna make you watch it,” he hums.
"Are you turning me into a furry?” you narrow your eyes at him accusingly. Youngjae bellows with laughter as he shakes his head.
“I just know you’ll like it.”
»»————- ————-««
"Are you crying?" Youngjae looks at you, stunned. You turn to him with tears streaming down your face and point at the screen,
"H-Her crying made me sad." He feels his insides soften and he coos before opening his left arm. You cuddle into his side without much thought and rest your head against his chest.
"You're so cute," he chuckles and glances down at you.
"You get amusement out of my crying?" You glare at him accusingly. Youngjae stares at your glare before doing something he's hesitated with for years; he leans down and kisses your forehead.
"I just said you're cute - nothing else.” You look up at him with cheeks flushed from the gesture. Youngjae only smiles at you softly. You look into his brown eyes and feel butterflies erupting in your stomach.
“That’s weird,” you think out loud as you turn away from him. He hums questioningly but you shake your head, “I-it’s nothing.” You’re more confused than ever at the thought of Youngjae being the person who makes you feel the way you do. Throughout the rest of the movie, your mind is occupied by how he’s treated you.
“Are you okay? You seem a bit distant,” Youngjae asks as he turns to look at you. You’re snapped out of your thoughts and nod quickly.
“I’m fine,” you reassure him. He gives you a weird look but doesn’t question further and instead, stands to bring the empty bowl into your kitchen. Once you’re alone, you continue to think about Youngjae - or more specifically, his actions. The night ends with you bidding him goodbye at your front door where he waves as you close the door. You lean against the door and think about it further.
Maybe Youngjae would find your heart easier to win than you thought.

Date Three
You step into the cafe with wide eyes. “This cafe is so cute!” you gasp when you look around at the white walls decorated with fake vines hanging from the ceiling.
“I told you you’d like it,” Youngjae chuckles as he watches how you admire the entire cafe. He loves to watch how excited you get around cute things.  “Go ahead and sit down first, I’ll order for you.” You oblige, heading off to one of the tables by the large window that outlooks the street. You sit down and watch as Youngjae lines up at the counter.
You tell yourself it’s because he’s trying to win your heart when you can’t help but admire his efforts. Youngjae truly is a gentleman. Whether or not you failed to pay attention to him throughout the years of your friendship was something that you debated over silently. Youngjae returns to you while you’re still lost in thought, the sound of his placing a tray on the table being the reason you come back to reality.
“I got you macaroons and iced tea,” he says as he places the tall glass in front of you. Youngjae takes the plate off of the tray as well as his own drink before moving the tray aside. You coo when you see the macarons.
“They look like little kitties.” You pull out your phone and snap a quick photo of the cutely decorated macarons before gingerly picking up a mint green one. The cat face and ears are drawn on with chocolate and you almost feel bad for eating it because of how cute it is.
“(Y/n), you can’t just stare at it forever,” Youngjae chuckles when he sees your hesitation.
“I can’t just eat it, it’s so cute,” you pout and turn the dessert around to show him the cat face. “Would you eat me, Youngjae?” you move the macaron around him as though the cat was talking to him. He swipes the macaron from your hand and pops the whole thing in his mouth. A smile grows on Youngjae’s face when he sees your gobsmacked expression. “You’re so heartless.”
“If you don’t want to eat them, I’ll eat all of them.” His hand hovers over the rest of the macarons threateningly and it causes you to slowly pull the plate closer to you.
“Nuh uh, I’m not going to let stone cold Youngjae eat all of them.” You decide against looking at the macaron since you know you might feel bad again - you honestly don’t know why you do - and pop it into your mouth. The moment you bite into it, the sweet and citrusy flavour of it envelopes your tongue.
“You’re adorable,” Youngjae chuckles, his bottom lip caught between his teeth as he tries not to smile too wide at you. You face contorts in confusion at the sudden statement. “You were doing that happy dance you do whenever you eat something you like.” Your entire body freezes and you’re surprised when you feel flustered.
You silently take a sip from your drink to avoid saying anything. Youngjae lets out another chuckle but decides against commenting on your flustered state. You look away from him and out the window, desperately trying to make your blush go away as quickly as possible. He watches with a small smile on his face. He’s made you flustered before, but he’s never made you this flustered.
"Anyway," you clear your throat, "what's your plan for the whole month?"
"There is no plan," he states. You give him a confused look. "I'm just going to treat you like I always do. I know you better than anyone else, and I'll use what I know to win your heart."
"You sound pretty confident in yourself, huh?" you tease. Youngjae smiles before reaching over to take your hand in his,
"It's because I know I do." You look down at his hand that's holding yours so gingerly, his thumb running over your knuckles. You watch as he suddenly stands and rounds the table to sit at the empty seat beside yours.
Youngjae leans towards you and kisses you. You swear there's a switch inside you that flicks the moment his lips are on yours because you know,
You know you didn't love him this way before.

A very scary phone call
I sit at home with my mother and father. The decor is very retro - shag carpet and a deep brown couch. Vaguely reminiscent of my grandmother's old house by the lake.
My father is on a laptop and I am charging my phone off of it from a usb cable.
I receive a phone call from an unknown number. My mother suggests I don't pick up but I pick up anyway. A woman named Amanda begins to talk to me but I can't tell what she is trying to say. Her voice is quiet and she is speaking very slowly. I assume she is a telemarketer and I hang up.
A few moments later the number calls back. Again my mother suggests I do not pick up but I am curious about this unusually persistent scam so I pick up anyway.
It is a different woman on the phone this time, she sounds older and wiser, she speaks with less hesitation and directness. She says to me "Please listen, I know you really want to hear this, we have something to help you". Still, I am annoyed with how I feel my time is being wasted and I am rude to her.
"can you just tell me really quick what it is you are selling? I'm almost positive I'm not interested.
"I will try to explain in 1/7th of a minute. Will you listen for that time?"
I roll my eyes and quickly do the math - that's less than 10s. What a silly amount of time.
I come back with contempt: "yes I will listen for 1/7 of a minute."
"7 to 10 minutes". I must have misheard. Whatever - I let her continue.
"I know you have been pretty successful in life. You completed your PhD and now work as a software engineer, correct?
"yes"
"And you recently bought a home, and this is your first house?"
Oh this must be one of those you-just-bought-a-home scams. "no". I tease.
My mother jumps in: “you should just hang up. Don't tell them all that.” She is right, telling a scammer any information is a bad idea. I decide not to answer the next question.
"and you've been dealing with issues related to schizophrenia."
At this point I realize this might not be a scam call. How would they know my medical information? This is too targeted to be a normal scam. I start listening much more closely.
"...despite these issues... is interesting."
She is hard to hear. My father on the couch next to me starts to panic because his laptop is dying.
"I told you to plug it in" my mother scolds him.
Will my phone die because it is no longer plugged in? No, it has enough battery, I'm fine.
My mother again implores me to hang up but I see no harm in just listening so I shake my head. The well-spoken woman on the phone continues to talk but I cannot understand what she is saying. My mother continues to tell me to hang up from one side of the sofa and argues with my father on the other side. Being stuck in the middle I get up from under my beige quilted down blanket, move to another couch across the room and give them a frustrated face. The room has a layout like my friends' apartment in college.
The woman continues but her voice is too quiet to hear. There are more people on the phone - is this a conference call? I find the volume on my phone and turn it up.
Someone interrupts the woman: "hold on; we lost him."
"I am here." I say blankly.
"Someone else on the call dropped off" she tells me. After a pause a man with a slight indian accent continues:
"... these viruses we collect will be very valuable for our research and you are a very unique candidate. We have been going over your genome and find something. Tylar you have a rare disease - Lyme PIL. Things are only getting worse. It is only a matter of time. We want to help you if we can. It is your right to refuse to take part in the study - and many people do - but we want you to consider it closely. Please contact us when you are ready..."
I scramble for a pen and paper; I have a pen but nearest to paper I find a sugar packet on the table next to me lit up under a table lamp.
"The contact address is 772 891 4572." They hang up the call.
My mother comes to my couch and asks what that was all about. My father listens from his seat across the room.
"they knew my medical history. They want me to be in a study. They said it was only a matter of time. I have some disease - Lyme P-something".
I feel like I'm in shock. My mother stands next to me beginning to tear up. My father stares across the room. I feel a lump welling up in my throat. What should I do? How did I get this? Could I have avoided this? Did I get this from being too adventurous - like Lyme disease from a tick? My mind is racing.
We all walk through the hall towards the bedrooms but at the end of the dark hall there is a pair of double hospital doors. We pass through and it is bright and sterile. The room is huge and full of equipment. I am directed to a surgery chair and nurses begin tending to me. My parents watch worried.
I try to hold back tears but I'm terrified. "I don't want to die". My voice cracks and the words are too much. I curl into a ball and weep in fear. My heart is racing and I don't know what to do. I was wrong. It's all over. I thought I was special. There is no hope. Why did I even try? Why bother fighting to survive any longer? It will just be suffering and pain from now on. I'd rather die happy from an overdose.
I wake up abruptly. My heart is racing. I grab my phone in search of comfort. It is 5 in the morning. I message a girlfriend in search of comfort. I think about messaging my therapist. I can't sleep again. I donate 20$ to SENS and begin furiously writing this.

Interstellar travel could make human language evolve beyond recognition, study says

Interstellar travel could make human language evolve beyond recognition, study says
It’s a captivating idea: build an interstellar ark, fill it with people, flora, and fauna of every kind, and set your course for a distant star! The concept is not only science fiction gold, its been the subject of many scientific studies and proposals.
By building a ship that can accommodate multiple generations of human beings (aka. a Generation Ship), humans could colonize the known Universe.
But of course, there are downsides to this imaginative proposal. During such a long voyage, multiple generations of people will be born and raised inside a closed environment. This could lead to all kinds of biological issues or mutations that we simply can’t foresee.
But according to a new study by a team of linguistics professors, there’s something else that will be subject to mutation during such a voyage – language itself!
This study, “Language Development During Interstellar Travel“, appeared in the April issue of Acta Futura, the journal of the European Space Agency’s Advanced Concepts Team.
The team consisted of Andrew McKenzie, an associate professor of linguistics at the University of Kansas; and Jeffrey Punske, an assistant professor of linguistics at Southern Illinois University.
In this study, McKenzie and Punske discuss how languages evolve over time whenever communities grow isolated from one another. This would certainly be the case in the event of a long interstellar voyage and/or as a result of interplanetary colonization.
Eventually, this could mean that the language of the colonists would be unintelligible to the people of Earth, should they meet up again later.
For those who took English at the senior or college level, the story of Caxton’s “eggys” ought to be a familiar one.
In the preface to his 1490 translation of Virgil’s Aeneid (Eneydos) into Middle English, he tells a story of a group of merchants who are traveling down the Thames toward Holland. Due to poor winds, they are forced to dock in the county of Kent, just 80 kilometres (50 miles) downriver and look for something to eat:
“And one of them named Sheffield, a merchant, came into a house and asked for meat and, specifically, he asked for eggs (“eggys”). And the good wife answered that she could speak no French. And the merchant got angry for he could not speak French either, but he wanted eggs and she could not understand him. And then at last another person said that he wanted ‘eyren’. Then the good woman said that she understood him well.”
This story illustrates how people in 15th century England could travel within the same country and experience a language barrier. Well, multiply that to 4.25 light-years to the nearest star system and you can begin to see how language could be a major complication when it comes to interstellar travel.
To illustrate, McKenzie and Punske use examples of different language families on Earth and how new languages emerged due to distance and time. They then extrapolated how this same process would occur over the course of 10 generations or more of interstellar/interplanetary travel.
As McKenzie explained in a UK press release:
“If you’re on this vessel for 10 generations, new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them, and these will become the vocabulary particular to the ship. People on Earth might never know about these words, unless there’s a reason to tell them.
“And the further away you get, the less you’re going to talk to people back home. Generations pass, and there’s no one really back home to talk to. And there’s not much you want to tell them, because they’ll only find out years later, and then you’ll hear back from them years after that.”
An example they use is the case of Polynesian sailors who populated the South Pacific islands between 3,000 and 1,000 BCE.
Though the roots of these sailors are traced to Taiwan (ca. 6000 BCE) this process of expansion led to the development of entirely new cultures by the 1st millennium BCE. The Polynesian languages that emerged bore little resemblance to the ancient Austronesia language (aka. “Formosan”) of their ancestors.
Similarly, the authors cite language changes that take place within the same language community over time, using the example of “uptalk.” Also known as “High Rising Terminal,” this phenomenon involves statements ending with a rise in intonation.
While it is often mistaken for a question by those who are unfamiliar with it, the convention is actually intended to indicate politeness or inclusion.
As the authors note, “uptalk” has only been observed in the English language within the past 40 years and its origins are unclear. Nevertheless, the spread of it has been noted, particularly by members of the Baby Boomer generation that use it today, but did not in their youth.
Another issue they identify is sign language, which will require adaptation from the crew since some crewmembers will be born hearing impaired.
Without someone keeping track of changes and trying to maintain grammatical standards, linguistic divergence will be inevitable. But as they note, that might be irrelevant, since language on Earth is going to change during that same time.
“So they may well be communicating like we’d be using Latin – communicating with this version of the language nobody uses,” said McKenzie.
Last, but not least, they address what will happen when subsequent ships from Earth reach the colonized planets and meet the locals. Without some means of preparation (like communication with the colony before they reach it), new waves of immigrants will encounter a language barrier and could find themselves being discriminated against.
Because of this, they recommend that any future interplanetary or interstellar missions include linguists or people who are trained in what to expect – translation software ain’t gonna’ cut it!
They further recommend that additional studies of likely language changes aboard interstellar spacecraft be conducted, so people know what to expect in advance. Or as they conclude in their study:
“Given the certainty that these issues will arise in scenarios such as these, and the uncertainty of exactly how they will progress, we strongly suggest that any crew exhibit strong levels of metalinguistic training in addition to simply knowing the required languages. There will be need for an informed linguistic policy on board that can be maintained without referring back to Earth-based regulations.”
Just for fun, let’s see what kinds of linguistic changes could take place.
For starters, let’s assume that a generation ship does take a full ten generations to reach its destination – in this case, Proxima b. Ten more generations pass before the next ship arrives, bringing people from Earth who still speak modern English.
Using the language evolution-simulator Onset, and an English-IPA translator, we can get a small taste of how a simple English-language greeting, and a common request (if you’re in a 50s sci-fi B movie), would change over twenty generations:
“Helluhuh fret, goot tu’uh be’yat yu. Took be’ye to’o u’ul ley’eru, pley’yaz.”
As you can see “Hello friend, good to meet you. Take me to your leader, please” comes out a little different after twenty generations of separation.
How about something more complicated, but no less familiar? Here’s a famous speech that fans of space exploration and history should recognize. After twenty years of interstellar travel, here’s how that speech would sound:
“Wu’eh cho’oz to’o go to’o too Bo’od! Wu’eh cho’oz to’o go to’o too Bood id teez dey’ich udh do’oh tey’e de uttur teedgz, dot biga’ozz tey’e ar ey’ery’eh, boot biga’ozz tey’e ar hard; biga’ozz tat goal wool surve to’o olgoodiez uhd bez’hur too bezt oov uhur eluree’iaz uhd skeelz, uhd biga’ozz tat chaludi iz wuhd tat wu’e ahr wooleet to’oh igsept, wuhd wu’e ahr udu’illid to’o postbode, ohd wuhd wu’e iddet to’o wud.”
Can you guess what speech that is? Keep in mind, this is just a basic simulation of how the English language might change for a group of colonists, never mind people here on Earth.
And when you take time to consider all of the spoken language and dialects spoke today, and that any combination of these will be brought with the colonists to the stars, you can see how confounding it all could be!
There is a reason why the myth of the Tower of Babel remains embedded in our collective unconscious. Language barriers have always been a hurdle for human interaction, especially where long stretches of time and space are concerned.
So if humanity plans to “go interstellar” (or interplanetary), we’ll be taking that hurdle to a whole new level!
In the meantime, you can check out several other articles we’ve done on the subject of generations ships, how big they would have to be, and the minimum number of crew they would need.

Gov't's New Guideline Advising Face Mask Reuse Sparks Row Amid Coronavirus Spread
Tumblr media
"The response from the community has been improbable - we’ve had donations from folks going to a web site and buying the fabric we need to continue to make these, and we’ve had a supply of plastic from a enterprise in Glasgow to assist cope with the demand. Oh effectively, there can also be another article circulating around in which a Taiwanese physician suggests improvising the cloth mask with an "air filter" fabricated from non-woven materials akin to dried-up baby wipes. Okay, actual final step is to add in your "air filter" as really helpful by the Taiwanese physician! There are N99 filters which seize 99.9% of .3-micron contaminants, nevertheless unvented N95 and N99 respirators reduce respiration efficiency by up to 37%. You probably have any breathing problem you shouldn't be utilizing a respirator without consulting a physician as a result of you would suffocate. "To date, there remains to be no confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV within the Philippines," stated the DOH in a press release. "But we still need to listen to from folks," Nuelle said. Consumers need to be extremely cautious when purchasing online, Nuelle said. "With lots of those scams, particularly online, it makes it really arduous for us.

How come I can wait in line for a cheeseburger at McDonald’s however I can’t go to church within the parking lot? We clearly wanted a lot more than that considering these masks usually are not reusable and so they get wet pretty easily that means we must always change them each couple of hours or so. A brand new research describes how a diaper embedded with a moisture sensor and a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag can alert a caregiver when it becomes wet. Public-health specialists say the unique recommendation on masks was partially pushed by a nationwide scarcity of masks for hospitals and well being-care providers, which led to a concern that encouraging mask use in most of the people would exacerbate the shortage. The sheriff’s workplace is tasked with implementing the legislation, he acknowledged, but said officers have discretion on how to do so. "If you’re considering buying from a website you’ve never used earlier than, do a seek for that website’s name and examine their evaluations on other trusted websites," the lawyer general’s office stated. But before shopping for one it’s necessary to consider the standard of the filter, the number of filter layers, how long the mask will last, and how well the mask fits your face.

Dr. Kevin Olsen: Coronavirus entrance traces - here’s how we attempt to cope with the heartbreak
This mask features 3 protecting layers, made out of breathable fabrics. Flip the fabrics proper side out and push the corners out with a blunt software. Sandwich the ends of the top and bottom elastics between the sides of the fabrics. Mark out the respective mid-points and sandwich tabs inside the folded mask, with raw edges aligned. Step 5: Put together the side tabs by folding fallacious sides together lengthwise. Place the outer layer wrong side up and top with the interior layer right side up. My site, Major Pandemic, was based on a typical sense preparedness technique, so I'm not advocating taping doors and home windows, pulling out the Tyvek body fits and covered face respirators simply but for COVID-19 .. however you do have those, right? If so, it's best to consider the size and weight of the best face mask for virus protectionto guantee that it may be stored properly. OSHA works more with sensible, on-site security issues. It's primarily used as a particulate medical mask that is NIOSH approved for use as a sort N95 respirator to fulfill OSHA necessities and CDC pointers for exposure management. NIOSH and OSHA are two sides of the identical coin; they're completely different organizations, but they have been both based with the identical act, and so they work together to sort out the issue of office hazards.
When The Star known as the quantity on the company’s webpage, the one that answered stated to contact the founder, David, then offered a cellphone number that didn’t work. It is not laborious on pores and skin, instruments, and gear with fixed use, is low-cost, however it doesn't work effectively on super viral viruses. So I wrote a cherik thing based on this prompt... (No... Nobody prompted me, but I took it upon myself, okay!!)
you broke off your engagement with your long-time boyfriend/girlfriend who you were supposed to bring home to meet your family so now you need me to pretend to be them
Erik normally ignores whenever the orange light blinks at the bottom of his screen, because whichever jackass is messaging him on the office messenger is either complaining of a crashed software or an uncooperative keyboard or an interrupted internet connection, fixing which are not a part of Erik's fucking job description. So he goes back to reviewing Alex’s code, cursing and scowling at the inconsistency of it. Whoever is messaging him on the office messenger can rot under his ignorance.
His phone begins to ring ten minutes later, spewing 'back in black' into the silent space.
It's Charles.
'Why are you ignoring me?' Charles demands as soon as Erik picks up the call.
'Ignoring you?' Erik scowls. A quick glance at the clock tells that it's just twelve, a solid hour before they generally leave for lunch. Did Erik miss something?
'On the messenger. I've been pinging you for the last fifteen minutes or so.'
Ah, so it's Charles then. Erik quickly opens the messenger to a stream of messages under ‘Charles Francis Xavier- Lead Analyst, R&D, Xavier Pharmaceuticals’.
SOS!!
Can we talk? I need to talk to you?
Can I call you now? I'd rather not chat about it here.
I would come up to speak to you in person, but I'm in the middle of something, so coming up 30 floors isn't an option.
I really have to talk to you though...
'Sorry, Charles,' Erik sighs. 'I thought it was that jackass Sean, complaining about his internet connection. Again.'
Erik expects Charles to recite another paragraph on workplace ethics from that awful brochure Moira had made them go through the other day, but Charles merely brushes off Erik’s comment like he hadn't even heard it. 'I need to speak to you about something. It's a little urgent. Are you busy?'
'No, no. Tell me.' Alex's code can wait.
Charles takes a deep breath and leaves it out slowly-- as if bracing for a fight.  'I need you to pretendtobemyfiancé,' he says so quickly that Erik wonders whether he's hearing things.
Erik pulls the phone from his ear to read the name on the screen. Still Charles. 'What?' he asks incredulously.
Charles groans on the other end, and when he begins speaking again his voice sounds strained and tired, 'I wouldn't have asked if I knew a better way, okay?'
'I don't understand, Charles. Pretend to be your fiancé? Why?' This isn't Charles' brand of humour, and the gravity in his voice suggests anything but mirth.
'You remember I told you that my mother is coming down next week?'
'Yes. What does that have to do-'
Charles cuts him short, his breath comes out in short puffs as he says, 'She knows I was engaged. But I may have forgotten to tell her that it fell apart.'
'How can you not tell your own mother about it, Charles?' Because Erik can't imagine not sharing a news that big with his Mama. It's a different story that she'd pull it out of him one way or another even if he'd tried.
'What would I say Erik? 'Sorry Mother. But my fiancé broke our engagement just two weeks after he proposed? My love life is fucked up, and magnificently at that?' Charles’ voice is a mixture of anger and fear. Erik winces. It may have been months ago, but Erik still remembers how devastated Charles had been after Scott had left him. It had taken everything in Erik to hold himself back from punching that asshole's face black and blue.
'Look Charles, I understand for not wanting to tell your mother then, but what's stopping you from telling her now? It isn't too late-'
'-It is.' Charles whimpers, and it's been a while since Erik's seen this side of Charles. Swallowing, he continues, 'Look, I know I'm asking a lot from you. But you just have to pretend to be my fiancé for a week. I'll tell her that we split as soon as she reaches Westchester. You'll have to trust me on this. Please, Erik...'
Erik doesn't know much about Charles' family, except that his sister is in Paris studying fashion and that his mother visits Genosha every year around mid January (more likely to get away from Westchester's biting cold than to see her son, Erik suspects), during which Charles promptly takes a three day break from work. Erik knows that Charles has a strained relationship with his mother (because anyone who addresses their mother as 'Mother' certainly does), but he doesn't know anything more than what Charles willingly lets on.
Charles is eerily quiet on the other end, even his breaths muffled and held. Erik can bet that he's chewing on his bottom lip in a bit to not babble-- probably giving time for Erik to proceeds the information-- brows crunched and blue eyes wide in anticipation. Something constricts in Erik's chest at the thought and he sighs heavily.
'Alright, fine. I'll do it.'
Charles releases a gush of air, a breath he probably was unconsciously holding. 'Thank you, Erik. Thank you so much. I don't know how to repay you for this,' Charles says somber and sincere.
'By taking my side than Alex’s. Easy,' Erik says just to get a laugh out of Charles and grins inwardly when he achieves it. 'Listen, Charles,' he continues, 'I can pretend to be your fiancé, but I can't pretend to be a heart surgeon-'
Charles is already speaking before Erik has finished. '-That won't be necessary. Mother knows my boyfriend proposed to me, but she doesn't know who he is or what he does. So you need not pretend to be someone else. You can be yourself.'
Erik still doesn't know how to parse or process all of this, but he'll just have to trust Charles on this.
'We can't pretend to be engaged and not have a backstory,' Erik says, because if he's doing this, might as well do it right.
'We'll discuss it over lunch.' There are sounds of movement in the background, gloves being removed and ruffling coats. 'How do you feel about Chinese?'
Erik closes the IDE and locks his screen. He picks up his leather jacket and hooks it up over his shoulder. 'Meet you at the reception.'
'Oh, and are you free after work?  We'd need a ring and I thought we could go shopping.'
'What?' Erik says, almost offended, 'If I'm proposing to you, I'm not doing it with a shop bought ring. I can make rings, did you forget that by any chance…' And they continue to bicker like that until the end of lunch hour and the end of that day.
Erik maybe willing to trust Charles with everything else, but he isn't trusting him with the rings, not when the best designers in town can't weave metal like him.

Tumblr media
"FRIDAY what will happen if i bring dad back?" she ask the AI in a hushed tone.
"it's a risky 50/50 chance miss." FRIDAY ensured. y/n didn't care about risk anymore. her life had been full of risks.
"which 50 is the strongest?" y/n asked, biting her lip. she reached tony and looked down at him.
"dying." FRIDAY replied vaguely. y/n gulped.
"and if i survive?"
"intense care will be needed miss stark." y/n smirked at the fact FRIDAY refused to call her mrs barnes. instead the software called her by her madain name or just miss.
"well, here goes nothing." y/n sniffled. she looked back at bucky and nodded. her attention then went back to her dad. she looked strongly at his body. she could do this. but what would the consequences be. death or survival?
"everybody move!" y/n called. a few people moved back. but bucky stood where he was.
"please. move." she said. the rest of them did. unsure of what she was about to do. but bucky had a good idea of what.
"y/n-" but before he could announce his word of disagreement. y/n had started her work.
blue and white flares fell from her hands and attached themselves to tony's body. the colour from his once pale face, had started to fall through.
y/n's body started to collapse. her hands grew shakey. her swell cheeks had sunk in, leaving her cheekbones bare. y/n's bright eyelids had fallen and left her e/c eyes a dark deathly colour. that's when pain seeped through.
"y/n stop this!" she could hear. she didn't know who spoke, but she heard it clearly. y/n stared further at tony, hoping for him to open his eyes at least.
his body had resurrected. it looked as good as new. the once enflamed right arm, had been repaired and the soft skin was shown. the cuts on his face and neck had been cleansed and had disappeard. leaving no trace of being there.
with one final flick of her fingers, she screamed. she screamed until her dad was alive and well. she screamed for the physical pain she felt. she screamed for love. her love for her dad. her love for the team. and her love for bucky. and with that last push, tony's eyes blinked open fast.
y/n let herself go. she flew back and hit the ground. tony gasped out loud, breaking for air.
pepper shot forward and craddled tony in her arms.
people were releaved to see tony alive. but some were more worried about someone else. y/n.
bucky ran over to y/n. pulling her into his arms.
"y/n, come on doll. come on." he said hushed. her eyelids were closed. bucky was mentally beating himself up.
-> -> -> read from here -> -> ->
bucky brought y/n closer to him and placed his ear upon her chest. listening for a heartbeat.
and there it was. it was faint. but it was there.
bucky sadly smiled to himself. he pushed y/n's hair back and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
"you're gonna be okay doll." he cooed. knowing full on she couldn't hear him.
that's when tony had sauntered up to his son-in-law and daughter.
tony had never thought he would pluck up the nerve to call bucky his son-in-law. not after germany. but he had learnt to realise that what y/n had told him that day, was indeed true. it wasn't her bucky. it was the winter soldier. it was HYDRA. and tony had realised that when his daughter walked wway that day.
"is she okay?" tony asked. his iron suit was stood up behind them, open from him walking out of it.
"she has a heartbeat," bucky replied, scared. "but it's weak." he sniffed.
tony had tears streaming down his face. but he held composer. his daughter's life was at stake. the last thing he needed was to act out and make a rash idea.
tony looked at bucky and frowned sadly.
"don't worry barnes, she'll be fine." tony sent him a sad smile.
"FRIDAY, set heart stabilzers to charge." tony muttered.
"yes sir." she said.
"you might wanna put her down barnes." tony suggested.
bucky rested y/n on the ground gently. making sure not to hurt her head. he then stood back a little bit. not wanting to be too far from her, if something was to go wrong.
"defribillator ready sir." FRIDAY said.
"go."
with that the defribillators in y/n's leather jacket started up.
a blue light emmerged from the gaps in the zipper of her jacket. a small zip noise was heard. y/n's body was jolted upwards. she then slouched back.
bucky's arms were crossed. his face contoured with worry. tears making their way down his face and soaking into his facial hair.
steve walked up behind bucky and placed his arm on his shoulder.
"she'll be okay buck. she's in safe hands now." steve muttered.
bucky looked back at his best friend and shone a small smile. the smile showed hurt.
"i hope so stevey. i hope so."
bucky's attention was soon grabbed as a loud gasp was heard.
y/n was alive.
tony slumped onto the floor and wrapped his arms around y/n. he then took her body into his lap and craddled her.
y/n coughed and spluttered. eyelids still heavy and soft cheeks; tainted with blood.
tony looked at his daughter and smiled. he brought her head up to his. putting her forehead against his.
"don't you dare try something like that again little miss." tony said sternly.
"jeez dad, you've been alive what? 5 minutes and you're already as ungrateful as yesterday." y/n chuckled, making her wheezd out into a coughing fit.
"and see? that's what you get for scaring your old man." tony sighed, laughing small.
"y/n-" bucky hovered above his wife.
"buck-" she looked up at him. his hair covering his bloodshot eyes.
bucky, too, crashed to the floor. the rubble crunching under his boots.
tony pushed y/n up, so she was sitting up.
"you scared the shit outta me doll." bucky sniffed. y/n smiled. she pushed his fallen hair out his face and behind his ears.
"i'm sorry buck. it won't happen again." y/n replied.
"it better not." tony and bucky said together. the two looked at each other and nodded. agreeing on something for the first time.
bucky rushed into y/n's arms. not letting her go. afraid she would disappear forever. he gripped onto her leather jacket for dear life.
"buck-" y/n coughed out. "too tight babe."
bucky snapped back to reality and let y/n go. in fear of hurting her more.
"sorry," he said. "i'm sor-"
"sshh, you did nothing." y/n shushed him. "i'm just tired and am in a lot of pain."
bucky looked down at his hands and then it hit him. the rings. her rings. they were still in his. after all of that, he still held y/n's wedding bands in his fist.
bucky took y/n's left hand in his.
"i believe these belong to you mrs barnes."
he slide the engagement and wedding band onto her ring finger. the diamond on the engagement band look a little grubby. but nothing that couldn't be cleaned when all was back to normal.
"i believe they do." y/n gleamed at her husband.
she reached up to his collar on his suit and pulled him weakly into her space.
"i love you bucky barnes." y/n said.
"i love you too y/n barnes." bucky replied softly.
bucky then pushed himself forward; placing his lips on hers. his scruff brushing slightly upon her bruised skin. the kiss was short and gentle. but showed just as much love as any other kiss they had shared.
the moment was ruined by tony as he spoke up.
"ahem - i know you two are married and all, but we have a minor here. and he doesn't need to be seeing this." tony sighed.
y/n and bucky shot a look at peter. peter looked back.
"what?" he shrugged.
"nothing kid." tony waved off.
"really dad?" bucky pulled y/n off of the floor and into his side. keeping her from falling to the floor. "we've been married for three years. you're gonna have to get used to the whole thing."
"but i don't need to see you two make out though do i?" tony fired back, smirking.
"really? i should tell you the same." y/n laughed. bucky laughed too at her remark.
"alright little miss, you win this round." tony held his hands up.
"dad, anything to do with bucky; i will always win." she said as she looked up at bucky. he looked down at her, smiling.
"alright that's enough, lets get this together?" tony stated.
"sounds like a plan." y/n replied.
with that, the avengers walked away from the battle against thanos, alive. just one casualty.
but after that day, both bucky and tony had realised how much of an impact little y/n had on their lives. without one, the other wasn't the same.
bucky thought he had lost his wife.
tony thought he had lost his eldest daughter.
and the avengers thought they had lost a part of the family.
but after the battle, tony had learnt to except bucky as family. and treasured him as much as he did y/n. if it wasn't for that one moment where he saw how much love was shared between bucky and y/n, he wouldn't have done any if it.
"you promise you won't hurt my little girl?" tony asked, eyes winced.
bucky smiled at the overprotective father.
"i promise mr stark, i shall love and care for y/n until the day i no longer walk this planet."
tony smiled and shrugged.
"seems like a good enough answer. welcome to the family barnes." tony said, holding his hand out.
bucky too it and shook it, stepping closer to tony and smiling more.
"please, mr stark, it's bucky." bucky said.
"then you better start calling me tony, bucky" tony replied.
and that was the start of a beautiful beginning...

Villains pretending to be redeemed
McCabe is an inconvenience. Park had hoped they would panic, betray him, add credence to his cover. Or that Patel would get suspicious at someone Park never mentioned, take care of that problem. No luck there.
They're alive, and worse, they're on the Iris with him and the merry band of insurgents.
Now Park has to keep track of everything he's ever let slip to McCabe, make sure none of it contradicts what he tells the rest of them. Quite frankly, he's not trained for this. He's not even being paid for this.
The crew gets more used to his presence. McCabe quickly realises Park has nothing to offer in this life and they'd have better luck looking expectantly at someone else. The gaping hole that used to be his left eye doesn't get infected. All things in favor of his operation.
Yet, every day on this ship tires him.
He wants to walk out of the airlock and let the cold vacuum of space take him. He wants to corner Patel to tell her everything so she can end things with a bullet to his head. He wants to go to sleep and never wake up. Screw humanity, screw the IGR.
He wasn't made to be a spy. If they hadn't had Shelly, he never would have agreed.
Frederick might be dead or incapacitated (another great aspect of the on-the-run life was the complete lack of information he was used to), but the IGR has an excellent chain of command. Someone else is in charge of Shelly now, someone else knows the terms by which Park could keep her safe, someone else is listening to the coded messages Park taps into his watch every night.
So, he wakes up.
Spends yet another day pretending he cares about the lives of anyone on this ship.
Time for a sex-off
Violet really isn't sure what she's witnessing, but she figures she'll follow Krejjh's lead and watch. Eat some of their fruit jerky while she's at it.
Arkady frowns at Brian's most recently made point. "Okay, what about a bar?"
"Uh, dude, did you forget I literally worked at a bar on Rydell? Yeah I've had sex in a bar." Brian chuckles.
"With a bartender?" tries Arkady.
Arkady's losing this argument and knows it. Krejjh certainly thinks so. They hoot and holler with every act or partner Brian lists off. Though Violet imagines they'd do the same if Brian had confessed to an entire life of celibacy.
Brian's smile shrinks. "Alvy."
"Shit, dude." Arkady shoots a worried glance at Violet, as if Violet is any better at lightening the mood.
Brian shrugs it off. "It's fine, man."
Seems fair enough. Violet's been tracking Arkady's yes's - she's not trying to, but her brain logicking out her girlfriend's past seems to be an unmutable feature - and many of them had to have dated from Cresswin or the war. Has to be some losses there, even if Arkady’s deft tale-telling elides that.
Brian suddenly looks pleased with himself. "You've never slept with a Dwarnian."
"No shit," grumbles Arkady.
"First Mate Patel, are you saying this doesn't entice you?" Krejjh struck a ridiculous pose, their face offended.
Arkady squinted at Krejjh, silent. Violet snickered. She refilled all four cups of moonshine, idly attempting to retrace the origins of this conversation.
"Moving on," Arkady finally says, turning back to Brian, "sex outdoors."
"You got me there, bud. Nope," admits Brian.
"I think," says Arkady, "that this competition calls for some calibration. You're half a decade older than me, you've had more time at this. Back me up, Violet. You're the scientist here, isn't there something about experiments and controls?"
Arkady smiles at Violet, her face playing at casual, her dark brown eyes filled with warmth. Her leather jacket's half-slipped off her, and Violet's gaze is transfixed by the revealed bare arm as if she's never seen it before. She wants to pull Arkady into a kiss, drag her back to her room and do about fifty percent of the things Arkady's listed. There are plenty of experiments and controls she'd like to test there.
Instead, Violet breathes out and responds with a "There are way too many factors at play for both of you, even without the age difference. I'm not sure any calibration would be fair."
Krejjh and Brian high-five. Arkady sulks, leaning even more into Violet, and Violet can't help but think they've won regardless.
Shaky Hands
Sana, Violet decides, is a far better patient than Arkady. It's a comforting fact to latch on to as Violet examines the burned flesh of Sana's forearm, the preliminary treatments done. Sana doesn't object to Violet's procedures, nor does she take offense to Violet asking if she's injured anywhere else.
"Rest of the crew?" asks Sana, her breaths ragged and eyes unfocused. She's seated on the medbay cot, her uninjured side slumped against the wall. Her shaking fingers are interlocked in her lap. Adrenaline after-effect. Temporary reflexes of muscles and tendons that would fade away.
"In the cockpit. We're clear of the planet, from Arkady's last update." Violet sets up one of the medbay's scanners above Sana's arm.
Sana simply nods, closing her eyes.
The Iris's medbay is a large room, with Sana and Violet only occupying a small corner of it. A pang of guilt strikes Violet. Maybe Sana would have appreciated having someone else around too.
Violet looks over the scans on the screen and the diagnostic inferences the software has made. "I may have kicked Arkady out of the medbay."
"Good call." Sana smiles weakly, dimples showing. "Can't have the first mate distracted while the captain's out of commission. How's my arm looking?"
"With the Iris's equipment, you might not even have a scar after this." Violet flashes what she hopes is a reassuring look at Sana. "You'll want to keep use of that arm to minimum, though."
"Okay." Sana doesn't relax at Violet's good news. In fact, she seems tenser. She blinks open her eyes. "And the tremors? There's nothing to worry about there?"
Sana sounds uncharacteristically disbelieving.
"Captain, I can take more scans, but I'm not seeing any nerve damage, if that's what you're worried about."
Sana sighs, her body relaxing against the wall. "Thank you, Violet."
Conversation to have later, maybe with some cross-referencing of Sana's medical history. It had taken a while for Violet to notice that the captain's reticence in sharing details of her own experiences, especially compared to the others.
"It'll take me a few minutes to wrap your arm up, you can go to sleep after that." Violet retrieves what she needs and starts work on Sana's arm
Sana shakes her head. "We should head back up to the cockpit after this, I'm sure the others have questions."
Violet fixes her gaze on Sana. "Didn't you make an announcement the other day that everyone had to listen to me when it came to medbay stuff? You're in the medbay, ergo-"
"I should listen to you." Sana almost looks proud. "Are you sure they don't need anything from me?"
"They're fine, and if they did, Arkady would have commed me by now." Violet adjusts the pillow on the cot. "You can rest, Captain."
Gunpoint
Arkady stared up the barrel of the gun pointed at her. She scowled. Made a show of pressing her wrists against the handcuffs that trapped them behind her back.
"Well, human," said Krejjh from the other side of the gun, a forced grin on their face, "the tables have twisted."
The dwarnian mercs behind Krejjh chuckled. That boded well. Meant they were buying the hasty cover story. Two of the mercs were whispering, jostling each other, and finally someone yelled at Krejjh something in Dwarnian. Whatever it was, it startled Krejjh.
"Why would I"-Krejjh stopped themself, hand holding the gun dropping limply by their side. They continued their reply in Dwarnian. That only seemed to piss off the mercs more, and an argument ensued.
The only non-English Arkady had ever learned was a healthy smattering of swear words, but the merc's expressions provided plenty of reading material, as did the way Krejjh's ears flared back. Easy enough to guess at the little group bonding suggestion Krejjh had rejected.
The mercs had started to doubt Krejjh. Shit. Two against ten would've been risky even if Arkady had been armed. She took a second to assess the situation before arriving back at her original decision. If they survived this, hopefully Violet and Sana wouldn't get too annoying about it.
"Hey, ass!" Arkady's words carried over the din of voices arguing in Dwarnian.
Krejjh turned to her, face stoic, but Arkady could see the signs of confusion. Krejjh hadn't had to do too many in-person cons. Might as well make it a little easier on them.
"Yeah, you, you purple piece of shit," spat Arkady. When Krejjh only took a single step towards her, she kept going. "What, you're too scared of humans to even approach one you've restrained?"
Krejjh's voice was uncharacteristically slow and serious. "I've never been scared of a human." They took another step forward.
This close, Krejjh blocking most of the other mercs from view, Arkady risked glancing at the gun and then Krejjh's brilliant red-yellow eyes. She gave the slightest nod. Krejjh's arm jerked, and they snarled, "You-"
"Me," mocked Arkady. "I've killed so many of your kind during the war. Pretty satisfying. Some deaths were quick and simple. Others, not so much. Want me to go through the list? The first one, now-"
The gun struck right against Arkady's nose, sending her stumbling to the ground shoulder-first. Blood filled her nostrils and relief her lungs in the same haggard breath that followed. A loud roar of approval came from the mercs, even some clapping. Arkady pulled herself back up to one knee. A sliver of blood slipped over her lips into her mouth.
Krejjh was panting heavily. They still looked pissed as hell at Arkady's little speech, and that'd work great for the crowd. Krejjh spun back to the mercs. They waved a free hand back at Arkady. "That good enough for you, fellas?"
The merc that had first yelled at Krejjh clapped them on the back. Arkady's lips quirked, and she reshaped the grin that threatened to show into yet another scowl. She shouldn't have doubted Krejjh pulling through.
For all the shit she'd given Krejjh, at the end of the day, they were a soldier, same as her.
Accidental Guardianship
One of the teenagers - the human one - has been staring at him recently. Longer than at anyone else. (He is excellent at noticing when he's being watched. It had been a useful skill to cultivate.)
Park briefly considers the possibilities. Perhaps she thinks him the biggest threat on this ship? Laughable. No depth perception, and Patel and the Dwarnian both exist. She's uncomfortable with the eye-patch? No, given her and her friend's background, she's seen far uglier sights than him. He snorts midway through considering the idea that she's chosen him the way her friend has chosen the Dwarnian. He has nothing to offer there.
It doesn't seem to be a problem yet, so Park does nothing. He thinks she isn't planning on stabbing him in his sleep with that knife of hers either, but he does check the locks on his door. Better to be safe.
Instead, she finds him in the kitchen one evening. Her footsteps are silent, and her question entirely unexpected.
"You were an analyst for the IGR, right?" Her brown eyes are intent, but wary, as if he might react the wrong way.
Park presses his hands flat against the table where he sits, and decides not moving is the best strategy. "Most people lump it all together under 'Agent' but yes, that was my job title."
"My mom did that too." The teenager slowly flexes her hand. "At least that's what Dad always said." Her hand stills into the form of a fist. "Then again, he always said she'd ditch it and finally join us again, so who knows what he knew."
An unexpected distaste settles into Park's mouth. His job had been a good one. Hard-won, too. But there was a very good reason Park had made sure the only person he was responsible for over those years had been himself.
Shelly had been the exception. Then again, she'd barged into it all. Left him little choice in the matter. Or perhaps that was a justification to cope with how little he knew about her current state.
A matter for another time. The teenager looked at him expectantly, and he realizes, dread in his gut, what she wants from him.
"There were many analysts working for the IGR." He tries to say the words kindly, but that's never been one of his strengths. "I wouldn't have-"
"What? I'm not stupid, of course you wouldn't know her," the teen spits out defensively. "I...wanted to know what the job was like." She crossed her arms. "If you're not still following the IGR's NDAs."
That he could do. Should he? That was probably in the presentation the captain and Violet had given the crew without the teenagers knowing: Acceptable Conversation Topics For Fourteen-Year-Olds. (Arkady had several objections, and not that Park disagreed, but it made the already thorough presentation even longer.)
He'd hated when adults had lied to him when he was growing up. Always subtleties they assumed he didn't understand, or they thought the world would right itself before any of it became his problem.
He is tired of lies. The others can harangue him about it tomorrow if they want.
Daemons
He'd expected the worst in Zone Z. There was plenty of data to be gained from a spare body and its daemon, with no useful intelligence coming from either. He didn't need to be a scientist to list the obvious experimental setups - separation, intercision, simply touching his daemon.
He always had lacked imagination.
Hyeona's gurgling croaks used to be a reassuring rumble. As he had worked overtime, the raven perched on his shoulder. As he had woken up in the morning, her beak pecking at and rearranging his hair. As he'd walked away from Agent McCabe for the last time, her black wings fluffed up just enough to brush against his ear.
He didn't think he could hear any of her calls the same way. Not after they'd been the background music to her pecking his right eyeball out, claws digging deep into his face. The IGR had a fondness for turning allies against each other, and what greater allies were there between human and daemon? He wondered if forcing Hyeona to do that had been a new level of achievement for them, or if she'd simply demonstrated an existing technique.
After, she didn't look at him.
She didn't look at him as they finally left Zone Z, she didn't look at him as he didn't shoot the dwarnian, she didn't look at him as they boarded the Iris. She flew as much as she could, even chose the ground to rest her feet on over his shoulder. There were too many practicalities to discuss in those early days of the renegade life, and that detail, like so many others, was pushed aside. In any case, the facts were simple.
His hands were the cleanest they'd been in decades. Still, his soul turned away.
