My orthotist is amazing. While she was casting my legs she asked my questions about my hEDS journey and when I apologized for monologuing she said “no, I want to learn more about this”. Providers who seek to learn from patient experiences are invaluable and I feel so grateful to have been referred to her.
Our first try on of UCBL inserts and a thin carbon fiber AFO proved to not give me nearly enough ankle stability. She was immediately ready to scrap the old idea and come up with a new solution. You’re telling me this provider was willing to be wrong and listened to patient experiences?!?! I need to make sure that I file a star reward for her through the hospital system.

it took 3 months (should have taken like one) to get this thing bc insurance took Forever to approve it but
i was originally going to get a rigid hip brace until the orthotist suggested a DMO (dynamic movement orthosis) which is like a compression garment with tension panels that work kind of like KT tape, or like the body braid i've seen some people with EDS use, but measured to you and custom made. also you can pick out the colors so mine is green and light purple :)
and hoooolyyyy shit it's really really good. like immediately i was so much more comfortable and walking is so much easier and SITTING is so much easier. so much less strain on my back. i feel like i really didn't realize just how bad my hip is (both hips tbh but more so the right) until i got some relief for it and waiting this long fucking SUCKED, even before this 3 months i've been trying to get Something for my hip since like march. but it was worth the wait
i was also measured today for a shirt that will brace my shoulders, and usually it's a pullover but i asked about it and they're making mine with a zipper instead because sometimes my shoulder is hurting / subluxing enough that i can mostly / only wear button-up shirts. and it's also going to be green and light purple

YALL I JUST WENT DOWN TO TALK TO THE PROSTHETIST I WORK WITH TO COAT PARTS AND HE
1. SAID HE'D GET ME MY OWN EPOXY AND OVEN I'M GOING TO NEED BECAUSE
2. HE SAID "HEY THIS $90K 3D PRINTER IN THE CORNER? I NEVER USE IT, DO YOU WANT IT?"
3. ALSO HE SAID "YEAH I HAVE THESE 3D SCANNERS TOO, I NEVER USE THEM, GO AHEAD AND TAKE THEM TOO"
Like the old supervisor was REALLY into digital prosthetic building but after he retired it kinda fell off their radar so basically I'm inheriting all the stuff he bought for their lab and I am LIVING FOR IT

50 ONE LEVEL CAREERS: Storytelling careers megapack by isy's the snake
Tumblr media
Here is yet another career mod pack, but this one has no promotions, you just work and your job level stays at 1. As the title say this mod is best for story telling!
creator's notes-
This mod requires XML Injector by Scumbumbo. You can find it here. Pay attention if you don't already have it for another mod! In that case, you do not need to re-install it. Be sure it is updated for the last patch.
XML Injector is a mod required for some mods to work. So, you install it as any other mod in your Mods folder, no more than one subfolder deep.
This mod has been updated for the version 1.99.305 of the game (second update after Horse Ranch).
It doesn't required any DLC to work. Base game compatible
I've adopted this mod from the amazing ItsKatato who, due to her hiring at EA, couldn't continue to mod. I have made some changes: • I have changes all the pics of the careers — now they all show Sims (please check the credits paragraph at the end to see who was the amazing raccoon who helped me); • I have updated the mod for the Horse Ranch patch; • I have cleared ALL the tuning errors; • Fixed the description of some careers who appeared to be missing.
Now, here we go with the explanation of the mod (originally written by ItsKatato, edited by me):
Katato said: "Have you ever had a story planned out for your sims but you can't find the perfect career for them? Most of the time when I find the career it ends up being a complicated career with a bunch of promotion tasks and extra stuff. Well, I've made a pack of a bunch of single-level careers. All your sim has to do is go to work, that's it. This is perfect for the non-important sims in your life, like the forgotten children of your legacy challenge." In short: those are 50 careers you can use for NPCs Sims or random Sims you do not want to care about. As Amethyst said: "Go to work, make money, leave me alone". Your Sims won't need any task to perform to upgrade and get a promotion, as well as they do not really need an ideal mood to go to work since it won't change their performance. They just go and do their job. And now the list of all careers:
1. Anesthetiologist 2. Cartographer 3. Chiropractor 4. Compliance Officer 5. Data Scientist 6. Dental Hygienist 7. Dentist 8. Diagnostic Medical Sonographer 9. Financial Advisor 10. Financial Manager 11. Genereal Surgeon 12. Genetic Counselor 13. Home Health Aide 14. Information Security Analyst 15. IT Manager 16. Interpreter And Translator 17. Lawyer 18. Marriage And Family Therapist 19. Massage Therapist 20. Mathematician 21. Mechanical Engineer 22. Medical And Health Services Manager 23. Nurse Anesthetist 24. Nurse Practitioner 25. Obstetrician And Gynecologist 26. Occupational Therapist 27. Operations Reasearch Analyst 28. Optometrist 29. Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeon 30. Orthodontist 31. Orthotist And Prosthetist 32. Paralegal 33. Pediatrician 34. Personal Care Aide 35. Phlebotomist 36. Physical Therapist 37. Physical Therapist Assistant 38. Physician 39. Physician Assistant 40. Pilot 41. Podiatrist 42. As I called my orthotist this week to reschedule my appointment for adjustments on my new(ish) prosthetic leg for the second time this week, I got to thinking about @lemonbronze’s missing limb Seteth.
Some thoughts and experiences I have had that I have projected onto Seteth under the cut.
Seteth waking up in a panic and swinging his legs over the bed and standing, just to fall back onto the it when there’s nothing to catch his balance.
Phantom limb pain, being sent back to how his injury came to be.
The soreness of the stump, the jagged scars. Not moving for days and the swelling.
Because of the swelling, the prosthetic not fitting.
Having to travel to get adjustments, not getting any changes made for decades for fear of his daughter asleep and being alone. Broken artificial limbs staring at him, useless and awkward. Being unable to function, and having to figure out ways to survive with only one leg.
Centuries of this until he was invited to the monastery. Quietly confessing worries, and Rhea bringing in the best prosthetist.
Seteth stumbling back to life.

Today was orthotics appointment. It is at hospital I don't like, Dad not like too because bad parking. When we get there, it was very full loud waiting room. So we wait outside the room in the corridor.
The orthotist Kirsty is very nice! With nice accent. It was loud bad place at first with other patients talking loud - even with noise cancelling headphones I struggle and get very anxious but also feel stuck could not stim like I need. I could not hear what Kirsty or Dad said because the other voices noises were louder even with noise cancelling headphones ☹️.
They could see I didn't cope, so she very kindly, look in other quiet room to see if it is empty. (Usually I go to that room). Yes, it is! So we go in there.
Then talk a lot about old AFOs. And Dad show my list of what is not-good about them. She look at my walking with shoes AND without shoes, and examine look at my legs and feet and move about and feel how hypermobile I am. And where my calf muscles is a bit tight.
She agree that my current AFOs don't work. So we try something different new. Dad showed my pictures of what I think might be better for me. So, she say they can do a similar style of rigid plastic AFO on the outside, with an inner "anklet" that is thinner more flexible plastic going around my ankle and over the top of my foot. Then that part will go inside the bigger rigid AFOs. And, I can have better straps that isn't so bulky and too tough to undo by myself. (They will just go once over, instead of through a ring and double back).
Then, she do a SCAN!! Instead of casts this time :D. I have to hold very very still it takes a LOT of concentration and effort. But I did very well. Dad said the shape of my leg showed up slowly on the screen when she did the light scanner in stripes. I didn't see that because I had to concentrate very much to stay still.
They had to stick a wire to the front of my leg for the scanner. And the tape stuck to my leg hair! And ripped some off when I took it off, ouch! But it was okay, not too sore, just mostly funny. Dad joked about is his genetics for the leg hair.
Overall, very successful appointment and it went much better than I expected! I am still very anxious about it all, because we have several attempts already that didn't work. But, Dad says we will keep on trying until we get exactly what works for me.
I always feel overwhelmed and exhausted after appointment. And always feel like I didn't communicate everything I want to - even with prepare with other people and they say things for me, even if I try try try so hard to do words, it just doesn't happen at the time. And I have automatic response to just nod head "yes" at almost everything, even if I didn't process or understand. So I worry that I seem to say "yes" or agree to things that I don't mean. Especially when I know that there was a lot of talking at the appointment that I didn't process at all. I feel so utterly lost all the time - and there is no way to really express how that affects me my whole entire life.
I hate my inability to communicate ☹️☹️. It goes WAY beyond just not able to speak. Even with all the tools and aids and help from other people... majority of the time it is simply near-impossible for me to interact with another person. It is everything about how I interact with everyone, my whole life long. And then I feel like anything that goes wrong or doesn't work is my fault for not able to communicate or explain something.
Anyway. I am knackered now, so time for rest and Celtic Woman DVD 😄. I try not to think about it anymore, just distract. And try to keep hope, but not too much, so I don't get too disappointed.
I have lemonade (Dad quickly go to shop and buy so I can have my usual fizzy drink treat after appointment 😄, thanks Dad!). And I have snack. And DVD. 😊

are there any orthotists in this corner of the internet? If yes and you're willing I'd love to ask you a few questions relating to a character I'm working on.
He got injured and will need mobility aids. I've already looked into various orthotics myself but it seems quite a few could work and I'm lacking the knowledge to know for certain which would be his best choice.
Help would be appreciated :)

I really love your paravolley! I’m not part of the fandom, but I am an orthotist / prosthetist, which means I make and work on a lot of the assistive devices you’ve drawn. All of your work is so thoughtful!! I really wish there was a way to incorporate art like yours into some sort of book or something similar to use as a teaching tool in a professional setting. I think it would help a lot of younger kids feel more comfortable (but from what I’ve seen in the comments, I think you’re already doing just that!) Lovely art <3
That’s so cool to hear! That makes me really happy to know — ages ago, I had thought of making a coloring book for younger children, but sadly I got super sick before being able to think out the idea better!
Thank you again for the message!

My orthotist is great. She's the first one I've had who actually knows about EDS (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). I went to her to get my AFOs (leg braces) adjusted and I was making a point about having unstable joints and lax ligaments. In response, she muttered, "Y'all basically don't have ligaments." So funny to me, very true.

The lovely new orthopedic sandals I just got sent home with, y'all! 🥴
These are actually less grandma-shoe fugly than the first ones they pulled out. My Mamaw wouldn't have gone out in public with those things on her feet, for that matter. I apparently had a severe enough case of Stressed Autistic Face going beyond my control when they pulled those out, that they did bring out another style. Which is something, I guess, embarrassing as it may have been. I don't have the best control over my face at the best of times. Which that wasn't.
At least they went straight for black, possibly after seeing my outfit. I went in halfway prepared to semi-politely try to avoid taupe. 😑
[ETA: Besides just the whole usual "orthopedic shoe" aesthetic, I couldn't help but notice that we were the only people under retirement age in the fairly busy waiting room. Which may not help.]
So yeah, I had an appointment this morning at what appears to be the only orthotic and prosthetic clinic in town. But, not yet on the cooler side.
At the last endo appointment, the doctor for whatever reason decided to put in an urgent referral to orthotics after finding out that I hadn't been there already. I can certainly see the point of trying to keep my one remaining foot as happy as possible, but it hardly seemed urgent when I'm not even walking around right now. Today was actually a delayed appointment, thanks to a collision with another gastroscopy appointment when they were wanting to schedule it.
But, examining my foot the endo also sort of freaked out for whatever reason. My supposed "deformities" were mentioned. That would be through a few layers of communication interference, since she is at best guess from somewhere in the Balkans. Dealing with my dense ass in English, in Sweden. It still seemed like a bizarre thing to say with no further explanation. The best either of us could figure out was that maybe she somehow got worked up over my toes...doing what they've always done with absolutely no comment from any sort of professional before? I really have no idea.
But, today I did go to orthotics. And they openly wondered wtf was up with the urgency. Apparently the information they got was that I had some active foot ulcer(s) going on which needed some special fitting to accommodate--which was very obviously not the case. (?!) No wonder reception there was pushing to get me in much sooner. The actual specialist also did not seem to see anything particularly concerning whatsoever about my foot or the way I stood on it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, I got sent home with a pair of totally off the shelf orthopedic sandals for around the house, basically because why not.
Tumblr media
Did they even see a need to fit me with additional orthotics, as recommended on the box? NOPE. And I did not get the impression that it was out of NHS-style cheaping out.
Just straight off the shelf walking sandals, which actually seemed less comfortable than what I've been wearing. Oddly, this orthotist wanted to put me in shoes at least one size down from what I would normally wear. It wasn't like they didn't have the next size up, either. She thought it looked too big. These looked and felt about like you'd expect on--and with my sensory issues, you can bet that I am careful about how my shoes fit. 😬 And my feet aren't exactly sliding around in them normally. Ah well. Another reason these sandals went straight into the closet after getting home!
Hopefully this won't turn into a bigger issue once I do have an aftermarket leg to stand on, and will really need decent shoes for walking around in.
On that front, when we were discussing why I was even there and what I might need? (And explaining that, yes, I was really hoping to get walking around again ASAP?) My handy live-in Swedish interpreter asked the orthotist about how we might best try to go about getting that underway. Seemed like a good place to ask, since that is also the prosthetic clinic I would be going through.
They honestly seemed a bit surprised that I wasn't already in the system for that--and once again unused to dealing with situations where someone had moved in minus a limb and a Robo Leg, rather than going through the local system from surgery onward. She went to get a prosthetist to talk to us, but they weren't in the office right then. Probably gone to lunch. So, we were advised to get back to the endo about the referral she said she was putting in (which wasn't showing up in their system, and honestly may have gone to the wrong place since it was so far out of the endo's wheelhouse). Also to try primary care, who should be able to refer me there too.
So, at least we do have a little more knowledgeable advice about where to even start with that. Plus some gratuitous too-small granny sandals resigned to the back of a closet.

Now Presenting: Thomas Zieragh, the inventor.
Full name: Thomas Matteo Zieragh.
Age: 32 years old.
Birthday: June 21th.
Sexual orientation: Demisexual.
Familiar: Rocco, the german shepherd dog.
Personality:
Birth chart (big three): Cancer sun, Libra moon, Virgo rising.
MBTI: INFJ-A.
Patron Arcana: Strength.
Upright: bravery, inner understanding that radiates power.
Reversed: self-doubt, insecurity, weakness.
Minor Arcana: Knight of Pentacles.
Upright: hard worker, extreme efficiency, not giving up.
Reversed: work without reward, not seeing the big picture.
Likes: Earthy colours, shiny pieces of metal that he collects on a box at this job, efficiency, standing beneath the shower-head and let the hot water wash away his worries at least for a moment, strong coffee (two sugars, please), play his piano, when his hair is puffy, spending time with his family, sketching and writing ideas down, rub Rocco’s belly, walking around Maeth’s centre at night, buying books that he rarely touches unless he’s got some free time, to be held close, to kiss his loved ones’ faces, learn new recipes, laughing until his stomach hurts, to fall asleep with his partner’s head over his chest, people who understand and respect boundaries, to-do lists.
Dislikes: When people yell, messy paperwork, impatience, stubbornness, how this hands feel so dry and rough after working for a few hours, when his shirts end up with big stains of oil and grease that come out of the machines and various tools, falling asleep on his couch because that makes his neck sore, when people interrupt him while he’s focused on something, holes in his socks, when his glasses get dirty.
Abilities: He speaks three languages fluently (maethel, vesuvian and hjallen)  and just a few words and phrases on other languages, he plays the piano since he was very little and he’s really good at it, agile hands when it comes to build stuff, he’s good at maths and physics too.
Favourite food: Chicken stew.
Favourite drink: Honey beer.
Favourite flower: Sandalwood.
Appearance:
Height: 6’2 or 187 cm.
Weight: 180 lbs or 82 kg.
Hair: He’s got nice brown-ish kind of gold locks that fall in subtle waves against his forehead and down the nape of his neck. Not too long, not too short, the perfect length for someone to run their fingers through the strands of hair.
Eyes: Deep brown eyes with smears of honey on them. He’s got a caring, tired stare and bags under his eyes, not too noticeable but they get kind of pink-ish if he hadn’t slept in a while. He wears big round glasses, this poor boy is one step away of being legally blind.
General description: Since he works so hard and he’s always lifting and moving heavy equipment from one place to another, his torso is nicely toned as well as his arms and legs but he’s not overly muscular, but big and strong enough. He’s got a tiny beauty mark on his left cheek right next to his eye, a bit of a crooked nose and not-so-thin lips but I wouldn’t call them big or anything, they just make sense with the rest of his angular face. His hands are rough and have little scars on them, marks from all those nights he spent awake working on some project he was obsessing over. He also has a scar on his right eyebrow, making it seem like he’s got an eyebrow slit.
Fashion sense: His wardrobe is full of simple linen button-up shirts and cotton t-shirt, warm knitted vests and grampa sweaters as well as earth-toned trousers, only allowing himself to wear more casual pants when he’s alone at his house. He wears comfortable leather shoes because he needs to protect his feet at work and he’s got a two pairs of the same shoes just for that: one pair in black and the other one on a camel tone, the rest of his shoes tend to be more casual.
A brief look into his life:
Occupation: Head of the department of orthotists and prosthetists (it’s just him and two other people as apprentices of the profession) of Maeth’s General Hospital. He’s got his own workshop that used to be a warehouse, there he has all the tools and equipment necessary to invent whatever Maeth could use as a way to improve their life style too. Here’s where Thomas teaches his apprentices the intricate and methodical procedure of the creation of these devices and how important is to pay attention to details.
Love interest:
Salice Roanan Halloway Zieragh (wife). 💘
Family and friends:
Isabella Zieragh, sister.
Ophelia Zieragh, sibling.
Galierie Zieragh, mother.
Anelisse Zieragh, aunt.
Federico Bianchi, father.
Mr. Ginard, former teacher of his current occupation.
Cole, Marcos and Matías, his best friends.
His general group of friends and acquaintances from his school days, he meets with them every Saturday night for a beer and a good chat at Draigh’s Tavern.
Miscellaneous facts:
He’s always thinking about how he could make life easier for those around him so he keeps a diary with all of his inventions written down on it, sketches and descriptions of machine’s parts too, that’s what he does once the working day is over, he stays at the warehouse and works on his own crazy inventions and devices.
He likes to read about historical facts about the world and its foreign languages so he’s got a few books that teach you how to speak nevivic, prakran, hjallen and venterran (and he’s planning on expanding his knowledge).
Sometimes he goes to the river to swim for a while, just let the water calm him down and comfort him. All alone, because he won’t set foot in the water if there’s people around.
Likes to take Rocco on long walks through the forest and play fetch with him.
It’s almost tradition to go to his mom’s house every two mondays to have dinner with her and his sibling Ophie.
