Portrait of a Lady on Fire / Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019) dir. Céline Sciamma
'There’s this French author named Annie Ernaux, and she wrote a book about her own abortion, and in this book, she says there is no museum in the world where there is a frame called “The Abortion.” It’s an everyday thing, but it’s never represented. And why?' - Céline Sciamma in an interview with Vox [x]

i think i’m so drawn to films like portrait of a lady on fire (2019), carol (2015), and shows like hacks (2021–) because it isn’t just the aesthetics or the queerness—though those hum through every frame like a low, constant note—it’s that suspended, aching atmosphere between an older woman and a younger one. the quiet between glances. the reverence braided into tension. the way time seems to dilate around them, thick with something unspoken. desire, in these stories, isn’t acted upon—it lingers. it hovers. it holds. it takes its' time. it lives in the air between two bodies who haven’t touched. it seeps through dialogue, flickers behind smiles, catches in the throat of restraint. it is never named, but always known. and that knowing—that delicate, mirrored ache—is more intimate than touch could ever be. they see it in each other. they feel it. it lives in the stillness, in the space where nothing is said and everything is understood. there’s something holy in that pause. something that feels haunting. maybe it’s because i’ve lived it—with older women, in silences that said too much. maybe it’s because my first unrecognized longing was my middle school guidance counsellor, soft-spoken and unreachable. or because i kept getting entangled with older women later in life, too. i don’t know. i just know it brushes something in me that language can’t hold. something that feels like memory, or myth.

And I'd be the immediate forgiveness in Eurydice || Portrait of a Lady on Fire || Talk - Hozier
[video description: 1-minute 35-second long video edit of Heloise and Marianne from Portrait of a Lady on Fire set to "Talk" by Hozier. It focuses on the Orpheus/Eurydice parallels with Heloise/Marianne and starts with the quote "Perhaps she was the one who said 'turn around.'" end description]
