I have hit my first serious barrier with Jar Full of Cosmos, and that is the fact that my little laptop just doesn't have enough compute power. Unfortunately it's too laggy to effectively experiment with materials and do a better job grooming--not to mention animation tests. Thankfully, I have new PC components on the way. In other good news, the fur system obscures pretty much all my bad mesh deformations. It also obscures his facial movements, but I planned for that and intend to do most of his emoting with ear and eye movements. Next time I make an animal, I think I'll use shapekeys instead of bones for facial animation.
The groom holds up from afar (and with lower resolutions) but up close it needs a lot more work. It's also worth noting that I am using the old particle system because the geometry nodes still feel too confusing, and apparently they can't be animated.
I have a really weird problem with blender hair particles and I still haven't found any other solution than using specific blender versions, which also creates difficulties because blender 4 and 3 have many differently working things and the files are not always compatible...
Okay, the problem:
For some mysterious reason hair symmetry & mirror doesn't work for all my models in many blender versions (so in almost all my models I combed both sides separately). If I try to mirror the fur or to use X symmetry in particle edit mode, it messes the fur up (even if it was already combed properly).
It works properly in 3.6 and 3.5, and also in some older version, because I remember I didn’t have this problem when I created the fur for the very first time. But then this problem began to haunt me and I'm desperate to fix it. Nothing helps and I have no idea why it depends on the blender version.
I asked my friend to test my models on different versions too and he confirmed that everything works the same for him, even on clean blender versions without any additional addons.
The model is 100% symmetrical.
And the most interesting!
After really a lot of tests I found out that this problem is most likely related to topology/faces/whatever else that my models has and hair mirror works properly if model is automatically remeshed (it also works on a completely new object such as sphere). Which is no way because it breaks the topology and everything.
It's still mysterious for me why it depends on the blender version though.
Does anyone know what this could be? What could influence this? I tried flipping the normals, delete everything including the UV map, nothing works. I googled it a lot and found no working solution.
the most annoying thing is when you’re first learning how to do something and there’s this one step that everyone who’s been doing it for a while thinks is so obvious that they don’t need to explain it so every tutorial has this “draw the rest of the fucking owl” cut and you’re just sitting there like wait a second you did some things between those steps that you did Not mention

honestly i put too many details into snookie9 over here look at the fact their headphones are unplugged cause their ass is not listening look at the fact theyre uhhh apple headphones (im so funny) and the cookie and eveyrhting just look at them
also the snake, thats,, not subtle of me in any way

i couldnt resist drawing a lil 432 so. you get him too. my love. hes john-the-baptist themed (what if you wanted to prelude the main guy and do some cool stuff and be associated with commonly sacrifical animals but then you get wiped out the story like a loser) except hes no animal handling training so pls ignore how terrified the sheep seems
i would be too honestly
also this is the first time i think ive ever posted a proper drawing of him!! and this is what you get! wow thats memorable huh
it was done with an extremely basic rig for the sole purpose of messing with/testing particle hair dynamics (I still do not understand how particle hair works) but I'm weirdly proud of this little piaffe animation
It has been a while since I posted something about the 3D work.
I’ve been rather busy with work and other stuff, but I’ve made some slow progress with the fur.
It took me a while to get the hang of it - as in; that I feel in control of what I’m doing. But I’m satisfied with the fur so far - at least for a first demo version. I have the following layers: down, awn, guard hairs, long guard hairs, very short fur (face, paws) and the whiskers.
I still have to add some proper colour + hair reflection and maybe add some hair dynamics (gravity and/or wind) and then render it.
However...damn this is heavy on my computer. I’m using Blender’s ‘old’ particle system (just to have tried it) and it can take minutes to change from one layer to another or to look at the render preview. I’ve a heavy duty gaming laptop, but I seem to have ran into the limits of the system and I really need to train my patience.
Also - the details that I projected onto the simple mesh through normal mapping got lost. The fur sticks to the simple mesh and not to the detail illusion layer (which is the normal map). So I will have to take this into accoutn when modelling a demo v2.
I'm telling you guys, Blender is incredible these days. This is literally a skin modifier, simple UV paint job, some Mixamo mocap data, and a couple area lights. I remember spending HOURS in college trying to get reasonable renders of stuff for school deadlines and this was just... so dang easy (by comparison). Like, approaching Keyshot levels of easy. This is actually a whole animation, but it takes over an hour to render a single frame on this i5 integrated graphics laptop so no renders for me :c
I used the dynamic particle fur system, and I'm struggling to get the fur to look less clumpy. Regardless, this is a big upgrade from my rotating Suzanne.
Ok I'm like halfway through the second season of breaking bad (no spoilers please) and like. I cannot stop entertaining the idea of an au where they secretly made like fursuits and shit. Bonus points if the furries are like incredibly over dramatized and still operate in the same way as drug lords.

[Picture ID: A drawing with 12 circles all different colors and labeled different things, bullet points follow under them.
the first circle is a deep purple with light purple glitter particles. It's labeled "purple glitter" and the bullet points under it say: "fabulous", "I love your aesthetic very much", "you do have an abnormal amount of microplastics in your blood though".
the second circle is a neon green with a lighter green wave around it. it's labeled radioactive. the bullet points for it are "some sort of creature", "you give bioluminessence vibes".
the third circle is a medium pink with dark green leave and a stem on the top. it's labeled starberry. the bullet points are "I think we should bake together", "flower crowns possibly".
the fourth circle is a light seafoam green labeled seafoam green. the bullet points are "maybe a little snobby", "calm yourself", "I don't know why I still follow you tbh", "Maybe I'm just reading you wrong".
the fith circle is multiple colors, in order from top to bottom: very light blue, sky blue, yellow, red, black, purple, pink, to light pink. it's labeled do you like the color of the sky. the bullet points are "you're always on tumblr", "hits post limit daily", "you should go watch some tumblr history videos if you haven't already".
circle number six is a brick pattern labeled throwing bricks. the bullet points are "you're my resource for all of the things happening in the world", "probably really punk or at least an Anarchist".
