What if I told you the secret to TTRPG greatness isn’t a magic sword, but a deep understanding of math? In this remastered episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we break down dice math—because nothing says "epic adventure" like probabilities and statistics. Learn how to outsmart the dice, impress your party, and finally understand why your bard keeps rolling ones. Turns out, math is the real boss fight.

Nartia, Scholar of the Streets A surprisingly well connected in infamously amorous merchant. He seems to ultimately be a decent person, somewhere deep down, but it can be hard to tell if you're not his friend. As likely to heckle you into being a part of his most recent scheme as he is to help you out, he's a good ally to have if slightly draining at times. Whether its a few coins or a night of companionship, it often feels like Nartia is after something when talking to you. A Naga NPC for an upcoming PF2e campaign I'm running! I really really love how he came out!

Random thing that made me think of your blog; Paizo is remastering Pathinder 2nd Edition to get away from Wizards of the Coast’s Open Gaming License, and in doing so, they changed the name of the Druid power Wild Shape and it’s associated Order (subclass). It is now “The Untamed” order (and either untamed shape or untamed form for the power itself).
Well that does inspire one heck of a crossover idea.

Preping a dnd game would not be so hard if people would stop saying that "your players need a story and world to interact with" and "random fackts you came up with in the shower is not world building" or "stop planing npcs that you will never get to use. You have game night in three days and still need to right down the stat block for the main fight of the session"

Luminous Petal, Wayward Arbalist
More art for a friend, this time of Luminous Petal, or Petal for short, an ant Kholo (Halfling Gnoll for all you DnD players out there) adventurer armed with her custom crossbow Poracha and a love for adventure she's an absolute disaster and everyone's problem. She's an artist and an explorer at heart and has a love for all the creatures she meets on her adventures, even taking in a few as pets. She has just a bit of every type of Kholo, and a few other races somewhere in her family tree and considers wherever she's standing at the moment to be home and whoever she's spending the night with her family. I was surprised to see so few Kholo on tumblr to draw inspiration from so I ended up borrowing from @c-rowlesdraws art style a little more than I intended, if you stumble on this be sure to check her stuff out.
(Also, I know its one day late but can we pretend its still gnollvember? Just for me, please?)

The archives of nethys, a Paizo endorsed database that makes all the rules and options available online for free, makes playing and running Pathfinder so much easier.
On the DM's side, the biggest advantage of playing Pathfinder over dnd is an actually functional encounter balancing system. Instead of CR which is a completely broken and confusing system, in Pathinder just by a creatures level you can accurately judge it's difficulty.
Tumblr media
Like with this alone I can build any encounter I want and it all works absurdly well. If I want a decent solo boss, just throw ANY enemy that's 2 levels higher than the party. If I want a duo boss, do two of the parties level. If I want to make it a tougher fight, I can sprinkle in some minions that are 4 levels lower. A level up is always 1000 exp, so I know that a moderate 100 exp encounter will get them 10% of the way to the next level. This is exactly what GMs need, the tools to build fun but still appropriately challenging encounters for my players.
So okay, my harping on about D&D 5e actually being relatively complex isn't to say "and that's why D&D 5e is bad," it's to address the idea that D&D 5e is easy to learn (it's clearly not: despite its market dominance a lot of people actively resist learning it and also a lot of people are also teaching it wrong). But there is more to it than that: D&D 5e has implemented design decisions that make it harder to learn than some of its predecessors.
Part of this is down to the insistence on using natural language for what is, ultimately, still a heavily keyworded system, meaning to ambiguity arising from when it's unclear whether a given phrasing refers to a keyword.
Part of it is down to absolutely bizarre moon logic that has actually made the game harder to understand. During an early playtest the game had a relatively simple action economy: a character could move and do a single action. This was done to address the "difficulty" of the action economy of D&D 4e. Now, 4e actually has a pretty dang simple action economy of a standard, move, and minor action; the reason it tends to slow people down is because it leads to analysis paralysis, with players trying to optimize those three actions to the best of their ability. So the slowing down effect of the action economy of 4e was actually misidentified as it being too difficult.
Now the simplification of the action economy into action and move is actually something I can get behind. But once the designers realized that dang 4e was actually kind of cooking when it introduced an extra action characters could do in addition to a movement and an attack and they were forced to deviate from their action and move model. And they introduced the bonus action.
The bonus action is, in many ways, similar to D&D 4e's minor action, but worse in every possible way. Bonus actions come with a bunch of limitations, exceptions, special edge cases governing when they can take place during a round, some of them have special triggers that need to happen first before you can use them. And then there's the entirely artificial limitation on number of spells a character can cast per round which adds unnecessary complexity.
All of which is to say: arguably more complex games can be easier to teach than D&D 5e because they are actually better written and make use of design techniques that actually improve learning, such as templating and keywording, and don't have bizarro universe action economies that make Rolemaster 2e's action economy seem relatively straightforward.

"I see." Walking up to him and looking him over. He had to be telling the truth because of the look of him. Singularity knew that the Autobots took better care of their own. And he acted like he didn't go rogue either. Walking to a table she placed the whip down and took out a box.
Most bots or cons would see this as a box of torture devices, but to Singularity they were more than what they seemed. Taking one out she started to repair Pathinder.
*the sound of a Uh-1 Huey flying fast and low course it was a bit banged up, avoiding flying high to be detected and kept being steady with how low it could be*
She looked up and grumbled. "Damn Autoboots."
