Day One of CinemaCon is done, deaded, over!

The slate was pretty much as I expected sans any info on Dakota Johnson's MADAME WEB.

-Jennifer Lawrence was on hand to tout her sex comedy NO HARD FEELINGS.

-Denzel Washington and his MAN ON FIRE costar Dakota Fanning talked their reunion project, EQUALIZER 3.

-Also in a reunion project is Joaquin Phoenix and his GLADIATOR director Ridley Scott. Footage from Scott's NAPOLEON - starring Phoenix, was shown. As part of Sony's deal with Apple+ it will have have a sturdy theatrical run before going to the streamer.

-Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard- clad in Ghostbusters uniform - sent a set video message from their not-as-yet named sequel of GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE.

-Martin Lawrence and Will Smith sent a video message from set of BAD BOYS 4.

-Whether they're really playing in Glen Powell's girlfriend's face or just trying to drum up press for their l'il movie, Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney were on hand to promote their rom-com ANYONE BUT YOU.

-There was extended footage of GRAN TURISMO starring Orlando Bloom and David Harbour.

-Also on video was Aaron Taylor-Johnson to tease footage from his starring vehicle KRAVEN THE HUNTER. It will be the first Sony Marvel film with an R rating. Confirmed for the film? Alessandro Nivola is playing Rhino.

-Fourteen minutes of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE was screened. The animated film takes place a year post SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE.

Other Sony films promoted: the Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Sam Heughan (and bewilderingly, Celine Dion) romance LOVE AGAIN, KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC starring Mackenyu, Sean Bean and Famke Janssen, the dark comedy THE MACHINE, the John Cho and Katherine Waterson fronted horror film THEY LISTEN, the all-star biblical film THE BOOK OF CLARENCE starring LaKeith Stanfield as the title character who is trying to capitalize on the rise of the Messiah. The film also stars RJ Cyler, Mame-Anna Diop, Omar Sy, David OyelewoBenedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy and others and INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR which will be directed by INSIDIOUS star Patrick Wilson and also marks the return of Ty Simpkins to the franchise.

On our last morning on the Shamwari Game Reserve we were not permitted a lie in. Oh no, still lots to do. So we had a half hour warning at 06.30 to present ourselves for breakfast and then Raymond was to take us to the Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre to see what they do with defective animals. Unlike Born Free, the object is to fix the problem and get the animals back out into the wild where they belong, and frankly we were amazed at the time and dedication they were prepared to put into saving animals. This is an impressive new facility built as recently as 2018 for the Shamwari Game Reserve and it is an integral part of the conservation work they do on site. We saw a white rhino orphaned at birth so had been hand reared, being fed milk till 18 months old, with the plan that it'll be released when 2 years old. Being a wild animal it butts the keeper rather badly when the milk run is ready to be performed. They needed a routine to pacify the animal first before delivering the white stuff and the method devised is to blindfold him and put earmuffs on first. Rhino needed companionship, and surprisingly this is provided by Frank the sheep! They didn't get on initially but now they are inseparable.

This team is remarkable. They have Patrick the giraffe, abandoned at birth and reared also by hand. I imagined a giraffe at birth might possibly be the size of a giant stick insect. Apparently a new born giraffe is a good 2 meters tall! Patrick is doing fine. A new avenue for the centre is vultures. They have recently received some 50 or so vultures who have been injured and are now in the process of recovery. Vultures are useful in cleaning up carcasses and preventing rats and blowflies which restricts the spread of disease. A major success story was the surgery performed on a severely injured white rhino left for dead after poachers cut his horn off and basically leaving a hole in its head! Rhino are still very much sought by poachers who can get $1M for a horn in the US which buys an awful lot of corrupt officials turning blind eyes!

Other inmates are elephants, jackals and meerkats. These are long-term projects and release to the wild takes time, ensuring that the animal will be able to cope on its own.

We took a wide loop back to the lodge on the lookout for any animals we might have missed, but it was like the apocalypse had come, there were none to see! So we settled up, paid a vast amount in tips, jumped back into the VW (now exceedingly clean after the staff had valeted it) and roared off down the dusty road replacing the dust removed with a bucketload of fresh dust and out towards the main gate heading for Port Elizabeth and our replacement hotel; The Hacklewood Hill Country House, built 1898 for Mr & Mrs Mattingly. Now a five star Victorian boutique hotel somewhat favoured by Trailfinders I think. This is home for the night although we shall have to abandon it tomorrow morning in favour of a very early flight to Johannesburg and then on to Kasane in Botswana where we shall be transferred to the Chobe Game Reserve.

ps What a fantastic experience this section of our trip has been. Shamwari has been great both for service and terrific food we have been provided and also for the insight into the animals and their habitat we have been voyeurs to. To be feet away from the majesty of lions, the power and size of elephants, the height, grace and elegance of giraffes is absolutely mind blowing. To see close up the endangered, hunted, but thankfully protected rhino is quite awe inspiring. It is easy to forget that these animals are entirely wild, would easily kill you, but are in their natural environment and are living the life they deserve. After the recent rains the vegetation is so lush and green and the animals are loving it.

pps We have begun our course of anti malarial tablets essential because of the risk in Botswana. We have been warned of side effects!

ppps Superb meal tonight at the hotel. Ostrich steak, really nice and eating out here is so cheap!!

Sarkhan gazed out from his perch atop the towering mountain range. The dragons he had saved in this timeline were flying out over the desert, swooping down upon the outlying Abzan settlements and convoys, eagerly taking their revenge. The planeswalker’s gaze focused on a black-scaled dragon spitting acid and pestilence upon a massive siege rhino and its crew, all of whom was defenseless against an aerial assault.

Despite the carnage, however, Sarkhan could only react to the unfolding events with a manic grin. The man cheered as the winged creatures assaulted the khans.

“Finally,” the planeswalker sighed in relief. “Finally, Tarkir’s true rulers may reign! Dragons of Tarkir! Take your birthright and cleanse the wastes of this rabble!”

“Erm, yes. What he said.”

Sarkhan looked over his shoulder, and saw a translucent dragon hovering above and behind him.

“Ugin! Yes, it’s a glorious sight, isn’t it? You and your kind can finally rule this world like the gods you are.”

“Erm…”

Ugin looked out at the largely one-sided battle. His silver-hued eyes also settled on his acid-spitting kin, but rather than reacting with elation like Sarkhan, the spirit dragon flinched as the rhino’s cry and the khans’ screams echoed out over the desert.

“Of course. But, don’t you think there might have been a less…overwhelmingly violent solution?”

Sarkhan’s eyes went wide. He gestured frenetically at the few surviving khans retreating into the sands. “Have you seen these brutes? Even for the Abzan, the best among them, violence is the only language they understand! They killed you, for scales’ sake! You of all…dragons…should know!”

Ugin did not respond immediately, instead wistfully gazing out at the vengeful dragons, which were now fanning out further into the desert.

“…I’m just not sure whether the path of revenge is the smartest road to take.”

heart attack is an american indie rock band formed by high school student jesse "mac" mccoy and his childhood friends romeo dixon and crash reid. current bass player jessie wilson joined them years after the initial forming of the band and has been a vital component to their iconic sound. the story behind their name is that, reportedly, when dixon asked mccoy if he was serious about starting a band, his friend's reply was "as a heart attack."

their early sound is a somewhat haphazard blend of rock, indie pop, and alternative. the group has not been afraid to switch around instruments or singers, occasionally handing over main vocals reigns to bassist jesse wilson.

the band's first performance was for their high school's battle of the bands, where they debuted the band's first song: "AOK". shortly after, they began playing small gigs in local clubs and for open mic nights—many before the band's members were even allowed to legally drink in the establishments they were performing at.

the band's current members include: jesse "mac" mccoy (lead vocals, keyboard, bass), romeo dixon (drums, percussion, & backing vocals), jessie wilson (bass, backing vocals), and crash reid (guitar).

In 2011, the German conservationist Robert Risch was hiking along the banks of a river at the northern limits of Tabin wildlife reserve, home to pygmy elephants, orangutans and the Bornean banteng, an endangered species of wild cattle.

Risch was expecting to see long stretches of wilderness but instead saw a swathe of palm oil plantations and electric fences. Risch founded the Rhino and Forest Fund (RFF) in 2009 with the aim of reconnecting Tabin with Kulamba and creating a 200,000-hectare (775 sq mile) wilderness. Kulamba already abutted the Lower Kinabatangan-Segama wetlands, a Ramsar site of international importance.

In 2019, the RFF bought 65 hectares (160 acres) of land and gave it to the Sabah forestry department for conservation. Although RFF’s purchase was small, it represented the first dryland connection between the two parks in decades, providing wildlife with an 800-metre-wide corridor, large enough for elephants.
