What is Penny Blood?

It has come to my attention that perhaps throwing a fanfic challenge out there for a very new IP without any sort of context on the IP itself was not a good idea. Well, I'm here to fix that now! So, what is Penny Blood, you ask? Penny Blood is a dark/horror JRPG IP created by the team behind the Shadow Hearts series, more dark/horror JRPGs that released on the PS2 between 2002 and 2006, themselves having spawned from a survival horror/JRPG hybrid know as Koudelka, released on PS1 in 1999.

Penny Blood itself is a spiritual successor to the Shadow Hearts series, and was successfully Kickstarted in August and September of 2022 alongside a Wild ARMs spiritual successor, Armed Fantasia. (The week of the event actually starts on the anniversary of the Kickstarter's opening!) Since then, updates have been rolling out, giving backers and anyone else interested a look into the characters, world, monsters, and mechanics planned for the game. As of 2024, Yukikaze Ltd. and Studio Wildrose have been having trouble securing a publisher for Penny Blood, but are working to find one, as well as creating for other Penny Blood projects.

In December of 2023, Penny Blood: Hellbound was announced and a close beta phase was opened to Penny Blood backers. Penny Blood: Hellbound is an action roguelike set in the same universe as Penny Blood, with the main game's villains, the Hellhounders, as playable characters. As of March 2023, the game has been released on Steam Early Access, with a full release planned for the Summer (Northern Hemisphere) of 2024.

I've tried not to be pushy about the Double Kickstarter, as I understand there are concerns. But if you have 40 dollars to spare, go support it.

WILD BUNCH Productions and YUKIKAZE will host a closing stream for the Armed Fantasia: To The End of the Wilderness and Penny Blood “Double Kickstarter” campaign on September 30 at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET / 22:00 JST.

The live stream, which will broadcast live from Tokyo, will feature a variety of interveiws, special guests, creator challenges, and new music. Additionally, extremely rare signed editions of the “Composer’s Dream” CD will also be made available via the Double Kickstrter campaign at 30-minute interviews. Only 10 signed copies will be made in total.

The companies will also host a special backer-exclusive “Golden Ticket” concert on October 1 at 3:00 a.m. PT / 6:00 a.m. ET / 19:00 JST. It will feature a special band by Yoshitaka Hirota and Akari Kaita, a performance by Shoji Meguro (Persona series, Guns Undarkness), a surprise special guest, and even more creator challenges. Details regarding how to watch the stream will be provided in a backer-only update prior to the event.

Double Kickstarter Campaign Success

Having raised over 260,000,000 yen with the support of more than 13,000 backers at the time of this writing, the campaign has allowed backers to purchase combo packs of both games, with additional digital and physical rewards, allowing them to receive two high quality JRPGs at a competitive price compared to that of most AAA JRPGs.

Music

Both games will feature music by composers who are no stranger to the genre, with Armed Fantasia: To The End of the Wilderness‘s huge 100-plus track soundtrack set to capture the essence of “Westernpunk” by Elements Garden (Wild Arms series) and Michiko Naruke (Wild Arms series), and Penny Blood‘s soundtrack incorporating the sound of various international locales in the 1920s from Yoshitaka Hirota (Shadow Hearts series) and Akari Kaida (Breath of Fire series).

Famed Final Fantasy series composer, Nobuo Uematsu, has already officially joined the project, and will assist with research and insight into authentic Irish music for Penny Blood‘s American locales. In addition, SaGa series legend, Kenji Ito, is now officially on board to help create the authentic sounds of Japanese locales in Penny Blood. Uematsu, Ito, and Hirota share roots at Square Co., Ltd. (currently Square Enix), and Hirota is the bassist in Uematsu’s band “Earthbound Papas,” where he often arranges songs from SaGa series composed by Mr. Ito.

“Composer’s Dream” CD

A special “Composer’s Dream” CD featuring special arrangements, remixes, and original music from the two games’ key music collaborators, along with additional collaborations by Persona series composer, Shoji Meguro, and Lufia series composer, Yasunori Shiono, will be available to backers of the campaign. Only 500 copies will be produced and there are no current plans to release the album after the campaign. Since it is an add-on item, only backers qualify for purchase.

Armed Fantasia: To the End of the Wilderness and Penny Blood are in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.

I really like the idea of the vampire lady who's basically the fist weapon user with her claws that instead of swapping out different claw weapons she just uses different coatings of nail polish. But that's the kind of fun mechanics you get from Shadow Hearts games

THE WOODWOSE OF CANNOCK CHASE (London, 1867)

‘The Penny Horrible was a cheap form of sensational journalism extremely popular in the second half of the 19th century. Although embellished, the stories were often based on fact and one such tale from 1867 describes an encounter with a Cannock Chase Woodwose said to have taken place one hundred years before.

The Hunstone sisters of Brockton Hall did not return from their weekly ride across Cannock Chase, and their family became concerned. The Penny Horrible describes how the young women were attacked by a Woodwose and their bodies found by Lord Hunstone and his friends. Lady Martha appeared to have been partially devoured, her remains left in a cave on the Chase. Lady Hannah had apparently escaped from the cave but had then been accidentally shot and killed by members of a search party hunting for the Woodwose.’ — Internet Archives

About the event:

Event duration: August 29th through September 4th, the anniversary of the kickstarter.

While other fanworks and forms of support for Penny Blood are amazing, this event is focused primarily on fanfic for both Penny Blood and Hellbound. Characters, ships/gen, type of fic? Completely up to you!

Participants are not required to write and post a fic every single day of the event! Write one, write three, write seven... it's up to you how many and what days you write for! After all, it's an event for fun and support for Penny Blood!

This is definitely shaping up to be a successor to Shadow Hearts. I just hope it improves rather than wallowing in that. I will remain cautiously optimistic!

Penny Blood- 2025 tentatively

An upcoming turn-based rpg set in 1920s new York. We play as a private detective with supernatural powers investigating a case that spans Europe, Asia and North America.

It was funded via Kickstarter along with another project called "Armed Fantasia" and will release for Xbox 1, ps5 and PC next year.

it has a roguelike spinoff called "Hellbound" that focuses on the villians of Penny Blood before the events of the first game.

was reasing your post about koudelka/shadow hearts and saw that you mentioned kikuta is a collaborator for penny blood. do you have a source for this? i don’t see his name mentioned in the kickstarter or in any press releases.

Thank you for pointing this out! I also went over the Kickstarter as well, and turns out I mentioned Kikuta's name in error. I updated the original article to reflect Machida's collaborator (among many collaborators on Penny Blood) as Yoshitaka Hirota, the original composer for Shadow Hearts.
