Where do you read and find web comics?
that's a great question!
these days the scene is kinda dominated by platforms like webtoon and tapas, which heavily favour vertical-scrolling infinite canvas formats. these environments are aggressively competitive, and getting to the top of the popularity pile requires a pace of work that makes even the manga industry look downright reasonable. I wrote a little about one such comic back in 2022. the 'portal' format applies similar pressures as webnovel sites - somehow that's come down to favouring high-concept premises which can be spelled out in a title, and a fairly homogeneous art style. in general you'll see a lot of romance and isekai.
that said, traditional page-formatted webcomics are absolutely still around. usually I read them on their websites - you can use an RSS reader to keep up with updates for most comics, but I fell out of the habit of that years ago.
as far as finding them, there's not really any centralised place to find them, but often webcomics will promote other authors, and there's organisations like hiveworks which serve to cross-promote members of their network. most webcomics have a 'links' page. it's rhizomatic or some shit.
if you are coming back to webcomics, 'I used to read this comic, is it still going' can also lead to a lot of pleasant surprises - you wouldn't believe the number of webcomic authors who turn out to have transed their gender when you come back a few years later (or maybe you would). 'spend years writing a comic instead of transitioning' is a strangely common pitfall [edit: though I'm not sure 'spend years transitioning instead of making a big creative project' is like. a better strategy lmao. they're both big expressions of agency, it doesn't really matter what order you do em.]
some authors tend to stay on a single perpetual epic that will likely last until they die, but others like to write multiple projects, and usually if you enjoy one thing by a person you'll enjoy the others. for example, @bigbigtruck wrote the excellent The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal back in the day, and is presently writing a story about stormchasers with a very similar vibe. Evan Dahm of Rice Boy went on to write some rather cool comics like Vattu.
webcomics review blogs can also be a good place to pick up recs. yes homo, now defunct, put a few things on my radar (I disagree with many of their opinions but that's part of the fun of it lol), as has thewebcomicsreview.
along similar lines, forums can be a good place to look - back in the old old days, I used to be a big fan of a D&D comic called The Order of the Stick and hang out on its forums a lot, and they had a pretty active board for talking about other webcomics (a large part of which was devoted to literally hundreds of threads for the club of posters making fun of a really mid comic called Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire - don't ask me to explain that...) these days I bet there are webcomics discords that function similarly, though I couldn't tell you which ones off the top of my head.
if you're willing to part with a little bit of money, events like the Shortbox Comics Fair are a good way to gather a huge stack of one-shots. I picked up a bunch in the last one of those, I should really write about them.
honestly I should really just draw up a list of comics I've liked, catch up on the ones that I fell off the update schedule on, and put that list on my website somewhere. writing full reviews is fun but time-consuming and I don't want to make promises with how incredibly ADHD I am (the 'comics comints' series lasted a mighty three posts, and of all the writing-about-stuff projects, the main ones I'm trying to get going again are the tftbn and umineko liveblogs), but it is happy-making to spread the word about good shit I've read. I used to liveblog webcomics quite a bit, you can see some of them over here. (I never got around to migrating the Homestuck sideblog.)
ultimately, word of mouth is queen here. all these suggestions are just different flavours of "find people who like the sorts of things you like and read the stuff they like" in the end!

Scaling up afforestation could be beautiful. The same goes for soil carbon sequestration—using methods like no-till, crop rotation, and/or regenerative grazing to store more carbon in soils. Agroforestry, or growing crops along with trees, can be a win-win for farmers seeking to diversify their crops. Blue carbon, or sequestering carbon in coastal ecosystems like sea-grasses and mangroves, could double as coastal protection for communities and support adaptation.
These strategies to remove carbon could also be dystopian, depending on who goes about them and how. Imagine a network of satellites and sensors feeding data to platforms 24/7, optimizing each square meter of land to sequester carbon. That could be great—but now imagine it’s run by a mega platform whose main aim is to allocate lowest cost carbon removals to algorithmic bidders. Companies procure carbon removals as needed based upon their changing forecasts, and speculators also exchange carbon removal futures, reserving vast areas of land from food production. The land is optimized for carbon, not grasshoppers, birds, or salamanders. Formerly forest-dwelling communities have long since left or been forced away, migrating to megacities, their cultural practices threatened with erasure. Despite early gestures toward vague “co-benefits,” the discourse of climate emergency has led the lands of the world to be optimized for a sole purpose. This is one extreme end-of-the-century scenario, but it could be the direction that carbon logics + artificial intelligence + a state of climate emergency + a lack of socioecological systems thinking points us toward.

In Germany, Sahra Wagenknecht took some of her political friends out of the left-wing "Die Linke" to create her own party "Buendnis Sahra Wagenknecht". It seems to represent a weird quadrant of the political spectrum: mostly left on economics, but pronouncedly right-wing / "populist" regarding LBGTQIA+ and migration. First polls indicate 5-10 % of votes going for this party. What would your strategy be towards them, as a social democrat / progressive? Thanks for your perspective, Steven!
Red-to-Brown is not an unknown phenomenon, and it’s not unusual for radical-right parties outside of that specific movement (think Front-National or Fidesz or Law and Justice) to emphasize expanded social benefits and state economic intervention as long as they exclude immigrants, minorities, and emphasize natalist gender roles and family structures.
While I think Wagenknecht’s move is morally evil, I think it reflects an accurate strategic assessment that a lot of economically-left, socially-right voters in eastern Germany would be willing to bolt Die Linke and would probably prefer a Red-to-Brown party over AfD’s radical-right-but-also-neoliberal platform. The real question is going to be whether they cannibalize more from the left or the right. Obviously the best case scenario is that BSW and AfD end up evenly splitting the vote and failing below viability, but any amount of resources eaten up in attacking each other rather than winning over working-class voters who care more about economics than social issues would be helpful.
As a social democrat, my instinct is to say shift left on economics and fight it out on that ground, because you’re not going to match them on social issues but I think you can on economics, especially since your only hope of victory is with the support of the Greens and the remaining Dei Linke (which will be more cohesive and hopefully more amenable on both economic and social policy now that their cultural right flank has bolted and what remains is the more middle class ex-SPD faction). That being said, it’s not good news for social democracy, and will probably end up with another Grand Coalition to keep out the right at best.

Cloud Migration and Integration A Strategic Shift Toward Scalable Infrastructure
In today’s digital-first business environment, cloud computing is no longer just a technology trend—it’s a foundational element of enterprise strategy. As organizations seek greater agility, scalability, and cost-efficiency, cloud migration and integration have emerged as critical initiatives. However, transitioning to the cloud is far from a lift-and-shift process; it requires thoughtful planning, seamless integration, and a clear understanding of long-term business objectives.

What is Cloud Migration and Why Does It Matter
Cloud migration involves moving data, applications, and IT processes from on-premises infrastructure or legacy systems to cloud-based environments. These environments can be public, private, or hybrid, depending on the organization’s needs. While the move offers benefits such as cost reduction, improved performance, and on-demand scalability, the true value lies in enabling innovation through flexible technology infrastructure.
But migration is only the first step. Cloud integration—the process of configuring applications and systems to work cohesively within the cloud—is equally essential. Without integration, businesses may face operational silos, inconsistent data flows, and reduced productivity, undermining the very purpose of migration.
Key Considerations in Cloud Migration
A successful cloud migration depends on more than just transferring workloads. It involves analyzing current infrastructure, defining the desired end state, and selecting the right cloud model and service providers. Critical factors include:
Application suitability: Not all applications are cloud-ready. Some legacy systems may need reengineering or replacement.
Data governance: Moving sensitive data to the cloud demands a strong focus on compliance, encryption, and access controls.
Downtime management: Minimizing disruption during the migration process is essential for business continuity.
Security architecture: Ensuring that cloud environments are resilient against threats is a non-negotiable part of migration planning.
Integration for a Unified Ecosystem
Once in the cloud, seamless integration becomes the linchpin for realizing operational efficiency. Organizations must ensure that their applications, databases, and platforms communicate efficiently in real time. This includes integrating APIs, aligning with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and enabling data exchange across multiple cloud platforms.
Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Strategies
Cloud strategies have evolved beyond single-provider solutions. Many organizations now adopt hybrid (combining on-premise and cloud infrastructure) or multi-cloud (using services from multiple cloud providers) approaches. While this enhances flexibility and avoids vendor lock-in, it adds complexity to integration and governance.
To address this, organizations need a unified approach to infrastructure orchestration, monitoring, and automation. Strong integration frameworks and middleware platforms become essential in stitching together a cohesive IT ecosystem.
Long-Term Value of Cloud Transformation
Cloud migration and integration are not one-time projects—they are ongoing transformations. As business needs evolve, cloud infrastructure must adapt through continuous optimization, cost management, and performance tuning.
Moreover, integrated cloud environments serve as the foundation for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT), enabling businesses to innovate faster and more efficiently.
By treating cloud migration and integration as strategic investments rather than tactical moves, organizations position themselves to stay competitive, agile, and future-ready.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that his government's strategy to address illegal migration includes a temporary suspension of asylum, expressing hope that the EU will acknowledge this decision.

P.S. Good! To solve the problem of international terrorism you don't have to start B.S. war in Iraq and Afghanistan: it is enough to close the borders, throw out the followers of terrorist ideologies and demolish all the mosques....and problem solved!!! Europeans have already done this many times...Spain, Portugal, Malta and it worked in the past, when traitors and cowards did not ruled Europe...

Oh gawd, it’s all unravelling!! I’ve resorted to asking my ChatGPT for advice on how to handle this!! This is the context I put it:
work in a small startup with 7 other people
I have been brought on for a three month contract to assess the current product and make recommendations for product strategy, product roadmap, improved engineering and product processes with a view to rebuilding the platform with a new product and migrating existing vendors and borrowers across
There is one engineer and no-one else in the company has any product or technical experience
The engineer has worked on his own for 6 years on the product with no other engineering or product person
He does all coding, testing, development, devops tasks
He also helps with customer support enquires
He was not involved in the process of bringing me onboard and felt blindsided by my arrival
I have requested access to Github, and his response was:
As you can imagine access to the source code is pretty sensitive. Are you looking for something specifically? And do you plan on downloading the source code or sharing with anyone else?
He then advised they only pay for a single seat
I have spoken with the Chief Operations Officer who I report to in the contract and advised my business risk concerns around single point of failure
I have still not been granted access to Github so brought it up again today with the COO, who said he had requested 2 weeks ago
The COO then requested on Asana that the engineer add myself and himself as Github users
I received the following from the engineer:
Hey can you please send me your use cases for your access to GitHub? How exactly are you going to use your access to the source code?
My response:
Hey! My request isn’t about making changes to the codebase myself but ensuring that Steward isn’t reliant on a single person for access.
Here are the key reasons I need GitHub access:
1 Business Continuity & Risk Management – If anything happens to you (whether you’re on holiday, sick, or god forbid, get hit by a bus!!), we need someone else with access to ensure the platform remains operational. Right now, Steward has a single point of failure, which is a pretty big risk.
2 Product Oversight & Documentation – As Head of Product, I need visibility into the codebase to understand technical limitations, dependencies, and opportunities at a broad level. This DOESN'T mean I’ll be writing code, but I need to see how things are structured to better inform product decisions and prioritization.
3 Facilitating Future Hiring – If we bring in additional engineers or external contractors, we need a structured process for managing access. It shouldn't be on just one person to approve or manage this.
Super happy to discuss any concerns you have, but this is ultimately a business-level decision to ensure Steward isn’t putting itself at risk.
His response was:
1&3 Bridget has user management access for those reasons
2. no one told me you were Head of Product already, which isn’t surprising. But congrats! So will you be sharing the source code with other engineers for benchmarking?
The software engineer is an introvert and while not rude is helpful without volunteering inflation
He is also the single access for AWS, Sentry, Persona (which does our KYC checks).
I already had a conversation with him as I felt something was amiss in the first week. This was when he identified that he had been "blindsided" by my arrival, felt his code and work was being audited. I explained that it had been a really long process to get the contract (18 months), also that I have a rare mix of skills (agtech, fintech, product) that is unusually suited to Steward. I was not here to tell him what to do but to work with him, my role to setup the strategy and where we need to go with the product and why, and then work with him to come up with the best solution and he will build it. I stressed I am not an engineer and do not code.
I have raised some concerns with the COO and he seems to share some of the misgivings, I sense some personality differences, there seems like there are some undercurrents that were there before I started.
I have since messaged him with a gentler more collaborative approach:
Hey, I’ve been thinking about GitHub access and wanted to float an idea, would it make sense for us to do a working session where you just walk me through the repo first? That way, I can get a sense of the structure without us having to rush any access changes or security decisions right away. Then, we can figure out what makes sense together. What do you think?
I’m keen to understand your perspective a bit more, can we chat about it tomorrow when you're back online? Is 4pm your time still good? I know you’ve got a lot on, so happy to be flexible.
I think I’ve fucked it up, I’m paranoid the COO is going to think I’m stirring up trouble and I’m going to miss out on this job. How to be firm yet engage with someone that potentially I’ll have to work closely with(he’s a prickly, hard to engage Frenchie, who’s lived in Aus and the US for years).

Deborah Lipstadt, the State Department’s antisemitism envoy, is tasked with monitoring discrimination against Jews in countries across the world.
But since Oct. 7, she’s also been paying attention to antisemitism closer to home, in her native New York City, where the NYPD has documented an average spike of over 100% in antisemitic hate crimes reported monthly since Hamas’ invasion of Israel and the ensuing war.
In the past four-plus months, Lipstadt said, she has seen antisemites in the United States and abroad inspire and feed off of each other. She told the New York Jewish Week that in New York City, where she gave a speech to a crowd of hundreds on Tuesday night, she hopes Jews will not begin hiding their identity and “go underground.”
“I think we’re going to be fine, but I hope we won’t dramatically change our lifestyle,” she said in an interview ahead of her talk at Central Synagogue, the large midtown Reform congregation. “I really hope people will not remove their mezuzahs from outside their door.”
She urged the audience at Central to “bring the joy” of Judaism to their lives despite growing antisemitism. “Being Jewish is not something you do defensively,” she said.
“We have to be as much propelled by the pulls as we are enraged by the pushes,” she added, drawing applause from the crowd.
Lipstadt, a renowned Holocaust scholar who has served in the ambassadorial role since 2022, has helped the Biden administration combat antisemitism, including through the administration’s strategy to counter antisemitism, which was rolled out last year before the Oct. 7 attack.
She told the New York Jewish Week that the administration had not changed its approach to combating anti-Jewish discrimination since the attack, but that it had “intensified” its efforts. Weeks after the Hamas attack, the Biden administration met with Jewish leaders to discuss a reported nationwide spike in antisemitism. The White House has prioritized addressing campus antisemitism in particular, and has also expanded Lipstadt’s staff.
Lipstadt said the hatred has become a “two-way street” between the U.S. and Europe, largely due to social media.
“It used to be that what happened in Europe sort of migrated to the United States and now we’re seeing it going both ways,” she said. She also repeated a message she has been advancing for months, predating Oct. 7: that antisemitism is a threat to democracy.
She told the congregation that bad actors, particularly autocratic regimes, are fanning the flames of antisemitism to undermine faith in democracies, and that “all government leaders” agree with that assessment, as do members of the U.S. intelligence community.
When members of the public buy into antisemitic conspiracies claiming Jews control elections, the media or banks, they have “essentially given up on democracy,” she told the audience at Central Synagogue, indicating a loss of faith in the system or that the government cannot ensure their welfare.
She said that trend had become more pronounced since Oct. 7. She highlighted increased antisemitism on social media platforms controlled by the Chinese government, speculating that promoting antisemitic messages could be a way to subvert American interests.
She compared efforts to stoke antisemitism to a “cooking spoon to stir up the pot” of societal discord. If people don’t feel safe due to real or perceived threats, they lose faith in their governing system, she told the congregation.
“If you think you’re a failed state, if you think the government can’t protect you, if you think terrible things are going on, then you feel unstable,” she said.
Lipstadt was in New York for a series of meetings, including on Wednesday at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Ahead of the trip to New York, she traveled to Germany for the Munich Security Conference and held meetings in London. Her visit to Central Synagogue and conversation with its rabbi, Angela Buchdahl, was co-sponsored by the synagogue and UJA Federation of New York.
During her visit this month to Europe, she met with American United Nations representatives and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whom she applauded for speaking “passionately” about Hamas hostages and antisemitism. Guterres has come under fire from Israel and its advocates for saying in October that the Hamas attack “did not happen in a vacuum,” as well as repeatedly expressing concern about Israel’s military operations in Gaza alongside his condemnations of Hamas.
Lipstadt decried rhetoric from others in the international community, however, saying recent statements by the U.N. special rapporteur for the Palestinians, Francesca Albanese, were “beneath contempt” and “overtly antisemitic.” Albanese, who once said that the “Jewish lobby” controls the U.S. and has compared Israel to Nazi Germany, said this month that Oct. 7 victims were not targeted because of Judaism, but because of “Israeli oppression.” The statements drew public rebukes from Israel, the U.S., France and Germany.
