Appearance:

Kore has long dark brown hair tied back into a high ponytail, leaving some longer strands of her bangs to neatly frame her face. Before moving to the Island of Woe, she had an olive complexion, but years of living with the Shrouds faded her skin tone which make her freckles and eyebags more noticeable. Her eyes are purple in color. Kore sports a permanent pout from having to do all of the heavy lifting for Idia.

Kore dons the standard Night Raven Academy female uniform, which consists of the black blazer on top of the blue, gold-lined vest designated for students of Ignihyde, and a short black skirt, all without the black and white tie. She ties the Ignihyde armband around her hip. In the dormitory, Kore wears a dark navy blue deep v-neck tank top with the standard bright blue half-vest over her right shoulder and across her torso, navy-blue pants, and black and blue boots. She either drapes the jacket over her shoulders or ties it around her waist.

Personality:

Kore is a very snarky individual, spending years around Idia would do that to a person. Somehow his introvertedness did not rub off on her, helping Ortho drag the Ignihyde dorm leader out of his room. Where Idia is not, Kore will be, running errands for him and generally doing the hard work. Despite her hatred towards doing everything for him, Kore and Idia do get along well, but him making up by buying her dice and gyros does make Kore a tiny bit willing to do it. Speaking of dice, she is the textbook definition of a dice goblin, always showing up to the Board Game Club with a new set of dice. Kore is one of the more competitive members of the Board Game Club, either dishing out challenges or readily accepting them from others.

Background:

(Chapter Six Spoilers)

The Merakis are a prominent family in the Kingdom of Heroes and one of the head families of the Jupiter Conglomerate. The patriarch of the household, Ourios Meraki, sired eight children; the youngest of which is Kore with his ex, Demetria. Her parents split when she was an infant, resulting in her spending her time between the Meraki household in the Kingdom of Heroes and Demetria’s in the Shaftlands.

Growing up, due to business relations, the Merakis and Shrouds had a decent connection with each other. Thus, Kore and Idia were somewhat close as children. However, at the young age of ten, the two would become inseparable. Disaster struck the Shroud family, and as the youngest of eight with zero possibility of ever becoming the head of the Merakis, Ourios handed custody of Kore over to the Shrouds as a companion to their grief-stricken child. She was forced to leave her brothers and sisters behind and live in the Island of Woe.

Kore was there by Idia’s side through all of the failed test runs, supporting his attempt at creating life. She held him as he broke down, and he held her when she missed her siblings too much.

Four years after Idia successfully brought Ortho to life, they both received their letters of admission to Night Raven College. Together with Ortho, Kore and Idia attended the prestigious school and were both placed into Ignihyde. In the crowd stood a certain student of Ignihyde about to embark on his journey as an interning fourth year: Poimandres Pleiades, the youngest son of Ourios Meraki and the older half-brother of Kore. Upon their arrival into the dormitory, Poimandres took it upon himself to welcome his baby sister whom he had not seen in six whole years with open arms. After their reunion at the school, Kore was finally able to reestablish her bond with her older siblings, starting with Poimandres.

Abilities and Unique Magic:

Because of her experience and enjoyment with tabletop roleplay games, Kore is very adept and quick with improvisation and thinking on her feet.

Kore’s Unique Magic is called “Restoration”. Restoration is a purely support-based power, which allows Kore to negate and remove any and all effects from an individual target. Additionally, she can act as a conduit for blot accumulation by siphoning blot from whomever she is in physical contact with and must keep holding on to the person to take in blot. Kore can also redirect the accumulated blot into another target.

Sphinx of Pharaoh Amenemhat III (Imn-m-ḥꜣt, “Amun is in the front,” 12th dynasty, ruled 1829-1799 BCE), who would become divinized and worshipped in the Fayyum lake region of Egypt well into the Greco-Roman period and known in Greek as Poimandres (Ποιμάνδρης), from Egyptian pr-ꜥꜣ (ni)-mꜣꜥt-rꜥ, “Pharaoh of the Ma’at of Ra,” which was his ruling throne name.

In the Fayyum there are statues of him standing together with the god Thoth (Greek Hermes) next to a larger statue of Sobek (Suchos), the primordial deity.

Poimandres Dialogue & PGM XVIIb. 1-23

Interesting parallel here, as Hermes Trismégistōs is being taught by Poimandres the elements and the “unreasoning” creatures that spring forth from said elements and in PGM XVIIb which appears to be a simple theurgic hymn to Hermes. In line 15 it states: “You lord it o’er the Elements: fire, air, water and earth.”

Here is the whole hymn as follows:

This hymn just seems very similar to CH I. 5 and 11. In paragraph 5 of the Corpus Hermeticum, Hermes Trismégistōs learns of “The fire that was nimble and piercing and active as well…” and the rest of elements that are “stirred to hear by the spiritual word (Logos) that moved upon them.” And in paragraph 11 he learns of the elements air, earth and water and the unreasoning creatures that spring forth from said elements.

What’s interesting is my equation of Hermes as the spiritual word. The divine Logos. Is this Hermes Trismégistōs being taught by Poimandres the nature of Hermes, the Olympian, as Logos and his role in Hermetic creation? Seems like an argument could be made for this. What’s tricky though is who Hermes Trismégistōs is. Cause at times, to me at least, He is Hermes the Olympian and Thoth syncretized, other times he is a divine prophet, but a man no less.

Thoth is also equated in my head canon as the divine Logos, but the name of which god is the Logos of the Poimandres dialogue is not what is important I think. For in both mythologies: Hermes the Olympian is a brandisher of speech, gifting said speech to we mortals and to Pandora, and Thoth is the creator of the hieroglyphs, recorder of all names who enter the Du’at. So, they can both be the Logos, as described in the Poimandres dialogue, i.e. CH I.

Not really sure where this is going, other than just making an interesting parallel to Hermetic “philosophy” and more practical Hermetic “magic/theurgy”. Anyways —Khaire Hermes!

This is not intended to be a sequel or revision of the Poimandres. Instead, it is my personal relationship with that text manifested in an initiatory dialogue.

The core teaching of Hermes is that the individual is ultimately no different from the supreme. This realization is gnosis.

The following is an initiation. It does not have to be read as such, the reader can do as they will. The following essay is also written in the second person. If you do not want to read it this way, it is perfectly acceptable to be someone else for a time.

Once, when your mind had become intent on things which are, and your understanding was raised to a great height, and your body was withdrawn as in sleep, as when people are weighed down by too much food or by the fatigue of the body, you saw the end of the world.

It was not an especially spectacular end.

You had so far had a great many birthdays, and seen much of the space in-between. Endings were no longer such a surprise to you, there had already been a number of them. It was who was waiting at the end which surprised you

“Who are you?” you asked.

He said, “I am Hermes Trismegistus. I once sat and beheld great wisdom. I am here to share the same for you now, if I’m able.”

“Why here?”

“At the end of the world? It’s the only place anything can be held to account. Everything else changes.”

You looked around you. His words made sense, echoing off the blackness of infinity. There was certainly nothing here to challenge them. You yourselves were alone. The thrice greatest Hermes was a speck of light, all else was blackness, and the cold dead rock under your feet. The sun was extinguished, the light was turned off. God had hung his keys on the hook and shut the door behind him.

“I am here because nothing matters,” you said. “The end of the world has come and all my earthly endeavors have striven to resemble it.”

“Incorrect,” says Hermes. “You are here because of a potential possessed by all beings, one you have not claimed. If you ask, I will show you.”

“Show me, Thrice Greatest. Show me that I might see what is mine to claim, and in so doing become myself.”

With those words, the absence around you exploded into brilliant light. The light swirled into a circle, which revolved around you. It was perpetual in its revolution, and so long it circled that you feared it might never stop. Then, suddenly, a single drop of water formed in the space in front of you. The water fell, and just for a moment, you could see the image of yourself reflected on its surface. Onto the circle it dropped, breaking the loop. With the fall of the droplet the circle splintered into fractal patterns that extended outwards into the black infinity, emanating from the contact of that single point.

“Do you understand what you have seen,” the watchful Hermes asked as the light faded from view.

“I shall come to know.”

“The light which has revolved around you is the light of life. It is infinite and unflappable in its motion. It will remain as it is if undeterred.”

“But the cycle was halted by a single drop of water!”

“Yes,” said Hermes, smiling. “So you see. The light of life is one of perpetual motion, it has no beginning and no end, origins may only beget other origins. But behold! That single drop is gnosis. The capacity with which men may break their bondage and seek freedom lies in that drop.”

“How can this be so?” you asked of Hermes.

“Look unto my face and you will know.”

Long you look into the eyes of Hermes Trismegistus. There in those eyes you see the beak of an ibis, and the twining serpents of the caduceus, and they are as distinct as they are the same.

“Life as it was seemed unending,” you said at last. “Origins begat origins. All that moved required a mover. It was the drop of gnosis which begat change.”

“Yes!” said Hermes.

“If all things are predicated on something else, then change must be predicated on knowledge. Only with knowledge, then, do I have choice.”

“This you have seen and this you now know. What then is knowledge predicated on?”

You thought for a minute on this wisdom, or perhaps it was a century, they felt the same.

“If all objects require a mover, and it is knowledge that begats choice, then choice can only be predicated on that which is bodiless.”

“If all these things which you have said are true, then that which is bodiless must be divinity.”

“But what is divinity,” you asked of Hermes.

“Did you not see? In the reflection of the drop of water!”

“I did see!” you said. “And it was myself.”

You stopped then, as you felt a cool drop of water land lightly on your forehead. Then there was another. And soon, here at the end of the world, it was raining.

“I see,” you said calmly, feeling the rivulets of water wash down your face, baptized in the freedom of gnosis. “I see that I am the likeness of the divine. That in me there is the freedom to break the cycle of life and death, because I am myself. Because I am in command of my own actions and desires. I am a seeker of knowledge and victim to nothing.”

Hermes smiled. A warm smile that looked the same as all the many stars painted across the sky. It had their light, and their endless patience.

“What will you do then, when you wake?”

“I will go forth and spread my knowledge so that others might break their chains. I will tell them that hopelessness is a fraud perpetrated by the body, and that the only victory of suffering is the acceptance of it. But Hermes, I fear they will say ‘my suffering is all I am’.”

Hermes Trismegistus shook his head. “They may refuse your knowledge, they are free to do so. It is always easier to take an identity provided for us, rather than to build our own. We did not choose our suffering, but it can feel comforting to wear it like a cloak so our divinity might never find us. And when the cloak has grown so comfortable, it is easy work to sew one for another. But you have nothing to fear. You know your divinity. You know there is always light.”

At those words, the fractal shards of light reappeared. They spread from and connected to every single raindrop at the end of the world. But the largest and brightest shards came from you. They spread, pulling the end of the world apart as if it were shattered glass you were punching through.

And then, finally, you woke up.

Golden Dawn: What is Hermeticism?

Hermeticism is a religious and philosphical system based on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus (Hellenistic conflation of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth) produced over approx. c. 300 BCE - 1200 CE.

One of the most common uses of the label is to refer to the religio-philosophical system propounded by a specific subgroup of Hermetic writings known as the 'religio-philosophical' Hermetica, the most famous of which are the Corpus Hermeticum (a collection of seventeen Greek Hermetic treatises written between c. 100 and c. 300 CE) and the Asclepius (a treatise from the same period mainly surviving in a Latin translation).

Hermeticism was closely associated with the idea of a primeval, divine wisdom, revealed only to the most ancient of sages, such as Hermes Trismegistus. In the Renaissance, this developed into the notion of a prisca theologia or "ancient theology", which asserted that there is a single, true theology which was given by God to some of the first humans, and traces of which may still be found in various ancient systems of thought.

Philosophy

God as “The All” -  The ultimate reality is called by many names, such as God, Lord, Father, the Creator, the All, the One, etc. However, specific to the Hermetic view of the divinity is that it is both the all and the creator of the all. God (”the All”) creates itself, and is both transcendent (as the creator) and immanent (as the created cosmos).

As Above, So Below - Appears in its most widely divulged Latin translations as:

Quod est superius est sicut quod inferius, et quod inferius est sicut quod est superius. That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above.

Prisca theologica - The doctrine that a single, true theology exists, that is exists within all religions, and that it was given by God to man. Christians appropriate the Hermatic teachings for their own purposes to demonstrate the truth of this doctrine themselves. By this account, Hermes Trismegistus was (according to the fathers of the Christian church) either a contemporary of Moses himself or the third in line of men named Hermes (Enoch, Noah, then Hermes Trismegistus). 

Three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe - A phrase derived from the Emerald Tablet, referring to three disciplines purportedly taught by Hermes Trismegistus.

Alchemy (operation of the sun, an investigation into the spiritual constitution of life, of matter, and material existence through an application of the queries into birth, death, and potential resurrection. Seen as the key to theurgy). 

Astrology

Theurgy (”operation of the gods”, one of two different types of magic. The Goetia - black magic reliant on an alliance with evil spirits, i.e. demons, and theurgy - divine magic reliant on an alliance with divine spirits i.e. angels, gods)

Fall of Man - 

Man observed the creation of nous and received from God man's authority over all creation. Man then rose up above the spheres' paths in order to better view creation. He showed the form of the All to Nature. Nature fell in love with the All, and man, seeing his reflection in water, fell in love with Nature and wished to dwell in it. Immediately, man became one with Nature and became a slave to its limitations (desires such as sex, necessities such as sleep). In this way, man became speechless (having lost "the Word") and he became "double", being mortal in body yet immortal in spirit, and having authority over all creation yet subject to destiny.

Religious and Philosophical Texts

The Corpus Hermeticum -  17 chapters, which hold dialogues between Hermes Trismegistus and a series of other men. The first chapter contains a dialogue between Poimandres and Hermes. Poimandres teaches the secrets of the universe to Hermes. In later chapters, Hermes teaches others, such as his son Tat and Asclepius.

The Emerald Tablet -  A short work attributed to Hermes Trismegistus which was highly regarded by Islamic and European alchemists as the foundation of their art. The text of the Emerald Tablet first appears in a number of early medieval Arabic sources, the oldest of which dates to the late eighth or early ninth century.

The Asclepius - A.K.A. The Perfect Sermon, The Perfect Discourse, or The Perfect Teaching. Written in the second or third century, and is similar in content to the Corpus Hermeticum. 

History

When Hermeticism was no longer endorsed by the Christian church, it was driven underground, and several Hermetic societies were formed. The work of such writers as Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, a man who attempted to reconcile Jewish kabbalah and Christian mysticism, brought Hermeticism into a context more easily understood by the variety of Europeans gaining the skill to read during the time of the Renaissance.

Hermetic magic underwent a 19th-century revival in Western Europe, where it was practiced by groups such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Many Hermetic, or Hermetically influenced, groups exist today. Most of them are derived from Rosicrucianism or the Golden Dawn.

For Plato, the World Soul is the supreme mediating entity, of which the human soul is a microcosm... Many parallels to the platonic World Soul exist, not least in the Books of Wisdom... The idea of the World Soul as circular or spherical, of having a cyclic movement, is implicit within mystic visionaries as diverse as Julian of Norwich, with her hazelnut vision of the world, and William Blake, who saw eternity in a grain of sand. The circle is an image of completion and wholeness, of integral harmony.
